Chanukah Education
Announces The Retirement Of Executive Director Joy Satterlee
The Festival Of Lights Begins
Art and Culture Center’s Executive Director Joy Satterlee is retiring after 21 years of service
By Rabbi Moishe Kievman - Chabad Chayil
During this holiday we are supposed to gather our families together and educate our children and ourselves Chanukah is known for the miracle of the Menorah that took place in the Temple, but the holiday was called Chanukah from the word Chanukat Habayit (lit Dedication of House), because it was the rededication of the Temple, after being occupied by the Greeks. Chanukah also comes from the word Chinuch, which means education. During this holiday we are supposed to gather our families together and educate our children and ourselves, about the miracles done for us on a constant basis. Together with recalling the original Chanukah miracles, we remind our families about the personal family stories that we each have, that brought us to where we are today. Chanukah (Hanukkah or Hanuka), which is also known as the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Thursday, December 7th, 2023, and concludes 8 days after, on the evening of Thursday, December 14th, 2023. It recalls the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Chanukah, Page 5A
Throughout the holiday season, Santa will be making scheduled visits to Gulfstream Park Village. Available on a first come, first serve basis from 6–9 p.m., Santa will be stationed in the ground level Village Center on select dates through Dec. 24, 2023. Families can enjoy the ambiance of Symphony in Lights while sharing their wish lists with Santa. The remaining holiday dates include Saturday, Dec. 9;
It is with great gratitude that the Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood announces the retirement of Executive Director Joy Satterlee after more than 20 years of stewardship of the organization. Joy has resigned, effective December 31st and the Center will start the new year under the leadership of Jennifer Homan, who began as Incoming Executive Director on November 6th. Joy will continue in her role through December 31st to assure a smooth transition at this critical moment in the Center’s nearly 50-year history. “It is bittersweet to resign as Executive Director of Art and Culture Center/Hollywood after 21 rewarding years of serving the Center as well as Hollywood’s community,” said Joy. “I’m incredibly proud of the accomplishments that the Board, funders, partners, and I have achieved for the Center along with our dedicated Staff. I’m also deeply grateful for all the relationships I’ve built during my time as Executive Director. It’s been a pleasure and honor to work alongside all the artists and community leaders in the area.”

Chanukah From Page 1A Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom. They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the Menorah, which was part of the daily service. Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight. In commemoration, Jews celebrate Chanukah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a Menorah (the 9th branch is to help light the other 8). Today, people of all faiths consider the holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness. Additional information about the holiday is available at: www.ChabadChayil.org/Holidays This year’s Menorah lighting is done with the recognition of the crucial need for a message of hope during a time that is so difficult for the people in Israel. The Menorah serves as a symbol of light and hope for us today amidst the world’s craziness, as it did for generations before us. The flames of the Menorah shine out into the night, reminding us that even when confronted with much darkness, a tiny light can dispel it all. Each additional act of goodness and kindness, fills that corner of the world with light, slowly catching on and spreading like wildfire. One act of goodness and kindness can make all the difference. Uniquely, at the core of Chanuka’s observance is sharing the light with others who may not be experiencing it. What better time or place to celebrate, than at this year’s 20th Annual Street Fair celebration in Highland Lakes! The FREE family-friendly event will this year take place on Sunday, December 10th, 2023/ 5784 beginning at 3:00 p.m. with pony rides, a petting zoo, an Obstacle Course, Laser Tag, Bounce House and other fun activities. This year’s Street Fair will also feature an airplane flying overhead, dropping chocolate gelt for all participants. The day will be tipped off with a Siyum Sefer Torah Ceremony, where a brand Torah Scroll will be brought in from Israel and completed at the actual fair, leading into traditional dancing with the Torahs, the Menorah Lighting and a Complimentary BBQ Dinner. There will also be a food court, holiday boutique, with music and lots of surprises throughout the day. As a family man who is
The great Chanukah Fair. Credit: ChabadChayil.org/Fair deeply involved in the community, I must say that there is no better way to spend that Sunday. Adults and children alike, are welcomed to join the many dignitaries and community leaders for an enjoyable and a meaningfully fun time for everyone. Throughout the State of Florida, the Chabad will be organizing scores of giant Menorah displays of all sorts, including a grand celebration with the Miami Heat on December 14th, a huge concert at Hard Rock and scores of others. To find a local event here in Florida, or anywhere throughout the world, visit Chabad’s International Chanukah Event Directory or the Jewish Community’s Local Directory at: www. JewishFlorida.news/events This year, Chabad-organized Menorah parades will see over 7,000 Chanukah Menorah-topped cars hit the road, bringing the Chanukah message of hope and joy through the city and into residential neighborhoods, allowing families to safely
share the joy and light of Chanukah with pride. Chabad centers worldwide have prepared over 32 million Chanukah candles, more than 700,000 Menorah kits and 2.5 million holiday guides in 17 languages. Large display Menorahs are available at many online sources and can still get to you in time for the holiday. We hope and pray for an end to all violence in the world, the return of all hostages and the eradication of all evil. We wish you and your family a very Happy Chaunkah. May our days be filled with light, warmth, joy, positive energy and always increasing, just like the Menorah lights that increase with each day! Unlike financial guides, How To Thrive In A Recession: “You Vs. You” takes a deep dive into Mental Health Disorders
He’s known as a Strategic Consultant and Business Coach, so Author George R. Leonard says he often surprises people when they ask about his new book. “They ask, ‘What’s it about, Finance?’ And I say no. It’s actually about your Mental Health. Because the way our economic situation is now, you may be having panic attacks and don’t even realize it,” Leonard said. “Our biggest issue is identifying the problem. It’s you vs. you. We are buying things to impress people who don’t even like us. You need to identify the problem, treat the problem and defeat the problem.” The book is called How To Thrive In A Recession: “You Vs. You,” so people understandably expect financial advice, but Leonard’s goal is to guide readers into a mental state that helps them maintain a resilient mindset, make sound financial decisions and cultivate personal growth in adversity. In other words, the ability to thrive in a recession or any other set of circumstances. “What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you?” Leonard asked. “Don’t go through it; grow through it. Life happens for you, not to you.” Unlike financial guides, How To Thrive In A Recession: “You Vs. You” takes a deep dive into Mental Health Disorders, explains what a recession is and then explores where the two intersect and actions that can be taken to overcome
obstacles. Leonard challenges the notion that external circumstances determine an individual’s personal and professional growth, and instead helps readers recognize their own worth by guiding them on a journey of self-discovery. Ultimately, Leonard hopes his practical guidance will equip readers with the tools they need to achieve personal growth in the face of adversity. “You can’t change the world until you change yourself,” he added. “It’s not where you start, but where you finish. There’s no magic pill and it’s not what side of the tracks you’re from. It’s about what you think and choose to create. Your experiences are not good or bad; it’s what you learn from them. No matter what’s going on in your life, you have the power of choice. You’ve got to have a setback for a comeback!” About the Author George R. Leonard is the Founder and CEO of Move Nation Media and has nearly three decades of experience in sales, business and entrepreneurship. HUD looks at third-party approval when selling or renting as opening the door to a potential violation of the Federal Fair Housing Act (a different FHA) which prohibits discrimination based on race or color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability. Under FHA standards, the property owner must have the right to sell to any buyer and lease to any tenant. A selling or renting owner may request a background or credit check, though the Association and Board (third party) cannot require one under FHA-insured financing standards. Remember that individual unit owners’ intentions or actions aren’t the issue here. If the Association’s Governing Documents require buyers and tenants to be approved by the Board, that condominium property will not be eligible for FHAinsured mortgage financing. What if a Florida COA thinks it may want to change its Governing Documents so individual units in it can be eligible for FHA-insured financing? Boards are strongly advised to consult their Association attorneys before even considering amendments to existing Governing Documents, especially if FHA financing eligibility is one of the reasons for doing it. Condo Boards and Associations should be fully aware that amending their Governing Documents can significantly change the rights of all owners in the condominium property. While FHA-insured financing might make resales in a given Florida condominium building or community available to a wider range of potential buyers, it is important to first understand what existing provisions in the Governing Documents either allow or prevent eligibility. Changing those provisions can negatively affect Association function and owners’ rights much more than any possible benefit that FHA-insured mortgage financing eligibility might provide. Detailed legal and resale market research needs to be performed before making a decision that affects all unit owners. That’s it for this week, a very brief introduction to FHA-insured financing and why it doesn’t usually work for Florida condominium properties. Editor’s Note: Christopher Carter is NOT an attorney. He does not give legal advice. For interpretation and application to specific circumstances of anything you read in this article, you must speak with a Florida-Licensed attorney.

The White House Goes Rogue Secret Surveillance Program Breaks All the Laws By John & Nisha Whitehead
“We are rapidly entering the age of no privacy, where everyone is open to surveillance at all times; where there are no secrets from government.” William O. Douglas, dissenting in Osborn v. United States (1966) The government wants us to believe that we have nothing to fear from its mass spying programs as long as we’ve done nothing wrong. Don’t believe it. It doesn’t matter whether you obey every law. The government’s definition of a “bad” guy is extraordinarily broad, and it results in the warrantless surveillance of innocent, law-abiding Americans on a staggering scale. For instance, it was recently revealed that the White House, relying on a set of privacy loopholes, has been sidestepping the Fourth Amendment by paying AT&T to allow Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement to access—without a warrant—the phone records of Americans who are not suspected of a crime. This goes way beyond the NSA’s Metadata Collection Program. Operated during the Obama, Trump and now the Biden Presidencies, this secret dragnet surveillance program (formerly known as Hemisphere and now dubbed Data Analytical Services) uses its association with the White House to sidestep a vast array of privacy and transparency laws. According to Senator Ron Wyden, Hemisphere has been operating without any oversight for more than a decade under the guise of cracking down on Drug Traffickers. This is how the government routinely breaks the law and gets away with it: in the so-called name of national security. More than a trillion domestic phone records are mined through this mass surveillance program every year, warrantlessly targeting not only those suspected of criminal activity but anyone with whom they might have contact, including spouses, children, parents, and friends.
It’s not just Law Enforcement Agencies investigating Drug Crimes who are using Hemisphere to sidestep the Fourth Amendment, either. Those who have received training on the program reportedly include Postal Workers, Prison Officials, Highway Patrol Officers, Border Cops and the National Guard. It’s a program ripe for Abuse and you can bet it’s getting abused. Surveillance, Digital Stalking and the Data Mining of the American people— Weapons Of Compliance and control in the government’s hands—haven’t made America any safer and they certainly aren’t helping to preserve our Freedoms. Indeed, America will never be safe as long as the U.S. Government is allowed to shred the Constitution. The Fourth Amendment was intended to serve as a protective forcefield around our persons, our property, our activities, our communications and our movements. It keeps the government out of our private business except in certain, extenuating circumstances. Those extenuating circumstances are spelled out clearly: Government Officials must have probable cause that Criminal Activity is afoot (a higher legal standard than “reasonable suspicion,”) which is required by the Constitution before any Government Official can search an individual or his property. Unfortunately, all three Branches Of Government—the Legislatures, Courts and Executive Offices—have given the Police State all kinds of leeway when it comes to sidestepping the Fourth Amendment. As a result, on a daily basis, Americans are already being made to relinquish the most intimate details of who we are—our biological makeup, our genetic blueprints and our biometrics (facial characteristics and structure, fingerprints, iris scans, etc.)—in order to clear the nearly insurmountable hurdle that increasingly defines life in the United States: we are now guilty until proven innocent. Warrantless, dragnet surveillance is the manifestation of a lawless government
that has gone rogue in its determination to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, the Constitution be damned. This creepy new era of government/ corporate spying—in which we’re being listened to, watched, tracked, followed, mapped, bought, sold and targeted every second of every day—has been made possible by a global army of technotyrants, electronic eavesdroppers, robotic snoops and digital Peeping Toms. The government has a veritable arsenal of surveillance tools to track our movements, monitor our spending and sniff out all the ways in which our thoughts, actions and social circles might land us on the government’s naughty list, whether or not you’ve done anything wrong. Rounding out the list of ways in which the Techno-Corporate State and the U.S. Government are colluding to nullify the privacy rights of the individual is the Biden Administration’s latest drive to harness the power of artificial intelligence technologies while claiming to protect the citizenry from harm. In his Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence, President Biden is calling for guidelines on how the government will use AI while simultaneously insisting that corporations protect consumer privacy. It is ironic that the very government that has been covertly invading our privacy rights, wants to appoint itself the guardian of those rights. Tell me this: how do you trust a government that continuously sidesteps the Constitution and undermines our rights? You can’t. A government that repeatedly lies, cheats, steals, spies, kills, maims, enslaves, breaks the laws, overreaches its authority, and abuses its power at almost every turn can’t be trusted. At a minimum, you shouldn’t trust the government with your Privacy, Property or Freedoms. Whatever else it may be—a danger, a menace, a threat—the U.S. Government is certainly not looking out for our best interests. Remember the purpose of a good gov-
ernment is to protect the lives and liberties of its people. Unfortunately, what we have been saddled with is, in almost every regard, the exact opposite of an institution dedicated to protecting the lives and liberties of its people. All of those freedoms we cherish—the ones enshrined in the Constitution, the ones that affirm our right to Free Speech and Assembly, due process, privacy, bodily integrity, the right to not have police seize our property without a warrant, or search and detain us without probable cause—amount to nothing when the government and its agents are allowed to disregard those prohibitions on government overreach at will. This is the grim reality of life in the American Police State: our so-called rights have been reduced to technicalities in the face of the government’s ongoing power grabs. With every court ruling that allows the government to operate above the rule of law, every piece of legislation that limits our freedoms, and every act of government wrongdoing that goes unpunished, we’re slowly being conditioned to a society in which the Constitution means nothing. What we need is a digital “No Trespassing” sign that protects our privacy rights and affirms our right to be left alone. Then again, as I make clear in my book Battlefield America: The War on the American People and in its fictional counterpart The Erik Blair Diaries, what we really need is a government that respects the rights of the citizenry and obeys the law. There are so many ways to Process Garbage. Landfills have become obsolete in South Florida.
City Sanitation Issues Getting Resolved Let’s Do Our Part To Help The Environment By Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper
Over the past weeks our City’s Sanitation Division was behind schedule due to multiple unforeseen occurrences. It seems to be the perfect storm of issues, excuse the pun. It started when we were hit with the unexpected rain and wind event. It was not classified as a Hurricane but sure felt like one and created havoc and damage. Then in the midst of this event our special truck for our Recycling broke. The Thanksgiving Holiday followed, which always creates a large volume of garbage. Our Staff was trying to work around these dominos by using a regular truck as a substitute for Recycling. Then there was another regular truck that had maintenance issues. This caused a big back-up. So last Thursday they announced that they would be caught up by Friday. As of Monday, DPW sent a memo which projected us up to date and back to normal by Friday, December 8th, 2023. I have not written about trash for a while. I wanted to brief our readers since there has been a bit of misunderstanding throughout the City about our Recycling Program. Currently the city is Recycling. All Blue Bins are intended only for Recyclables. Our Sanitation Department takes all Trash to a Local Transfer Site with two different types of trucks. There the Trash is tipped into two Separate
Shipping Containers. One is for Garbage and the other is for Recyclables. The problem is residents are using the Blue Bins for everything. Also, some wellintended residents are not Recycling properly. This becomes what is called contaminated and is not allowed to be tipped into the Recycling Container. What is and what is not Recyclable? That is the most important question. Newspaper, Magazines, Mail, Soft Covered Books, Cardboard Shipping Boxes, Soft Boxes from Cereal, Tissues and Soda Boxes. Glass is Recyclable but not from Cars Windows, Mirrors, Bulbs or any type of Glass Cookware. Plastic is always a big dilemma. Firstly, all items that are used for Food should be cleaned of Food. Also, no Film Wraps or Plastic Bags ever. This means do not place Bagged Recyclables in the Blue Bins. Plastic Utensils also cannot go into the Bin. Containers made to be Biodegradable need to go in the Garbage. All other containers can go in Bins. Aluminum Containers can also go into the Blue Bins. What cannot go into the Bins? Batteries, Electronics, Small Appliances, Old Toys, Scrap Metal, Paint, Gas Tanks, Building Debris, Rocks and Dirt. If you have to think twice, the Golden Rule is do not put it in. Our readers can always be sure by visiting our website at: www.cohb.org
So, we know what can and cannot go in the Blue Bins. What can go into the Green Roll Outs? All other Garbage. Large items like: Electronics, Furniture and Large Appliances can go into Bulk Trash Pick Up. Do not EVER put Tanks and other Hazardous Materials in the Green Bins. We have actually had a Trash Truck catch fire due to someone disregarding the rules. Our City now has a quarterly drop off of all Hazardous Items at our Department of Public Works. At this time, we also collect Small Electric Items. These are used for a Special Program to help Handicapped Individuals. Bulk Waste is picked up curbside once a month in each quadrant. All Trash can only be put out the night before picking it up or you will receive a Fine. Obviously, you can also Recycle by taking Slightly Worn and Used Items and donating them to GoodWill which is just west of 1-95 located in Pembroke Park. Also, there are other NonProfits but not all will pick up. As the old saying goes, someone’s trash may be someone’s treasure. Some people also Compost Food Scraps for their Gardens. Broward County is in the midst of
developing a Comprehensive Plan for Trash. Some cities have joined and others have decided to take their own look at the future of Trash Disposal. There are so many ways to Process Garbage. Landfills have become obsolete in South Florida. We have had a Trash to Energy Plant in Davie for years. This process has become very stigmatized since older plants could not Filter Air properly and Ash from the plants could not be used. This process over the past ten years has greatly evolved. The plant’s exhaust can be scrubbed through a Water Process and that Water Filtered. Ash is now being used and Recycled for Construction and Cement, Cities like Pembroke Pines are looking at Trash Compost to Jet Fuel Models. Coral Springs is looking to Palm Beach who has developed a State-OfThe-Art Trash to Energy Plant. The County process is projected to last almost two years. At that time, we will be better informed as to what direction and if partnering with the plan will help our residents. Please help do your part to help our Environment. As we celebrate Hanukkah, the Festival Of Light, let us all pray for peace and the release of all hostages.
As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our city a better place. I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org. Or: joycooper@aol.com. Insights From Hollywood Police: How To Navigate Holiday Shopping Safely The season of gifting, laughter and heartfelt joy is upon us! Amidst the sparkle of holiday lights and the thrill of finding the perfect present, it’s crucial to ensure that our festive cheer isn’t clouded by potential risks. Whether strolling through bustling stores or surfing the web for that ideal gift, the Hollywood Police Department has offered invaluable safety tips to safeguard both your purchases and your peace of mind. In The Buzz Of Stores Navigating crowded stores with shopping bags aplenty demands a strategic approach. The Hollywood Police Department advises against burdening yourself with more than you can comfortably carry. Seek assistance from store staff or bring a shopping buddy to ease the load and enhance security. To outsmart potential fraudsters, consider using disposable credit cards or alternate payment methods. It’s all about staying one step ahead. When it comes to protecting your financial information, vigilance is key. Keep your credit cards close and wait until prompted before revealing them. A simple act like carrying your wallet inside a secure pocket can thwart pickpockets’ attempts. And for parents, having a plan in place for staying connected with children amidst the shopping frenzy ensures a stress-free experience for all.
Parking lots can be prime spots for opportunistic thieves. Opt for well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings, particularly when returning to your vehicle. Visibility is key—stash your purchases out of sight and never leave valuables in plain view, reducing the temptation for wouldbe thieves. Online Shopping Know-How In our digital age, online shopping is a convenience many of us cherish. Yet, it comes with its own set of precautions. The Hollywood Police Department recommends using credit cards over debit cards for online purchases, offering an added layer of protection in case of discrepancies. Additionally, verifying a secure connection by looking for the padlock icon in the browser bar can prevent data breaches and secure transactions. Moreover, safeguard your personal information vigilantly. Refrain from divulging sensitive data to unsolicited callers or suspicious websites. Keep receipts and confirmations handy, organizing them in a file to streamline any future verification processes. Scams often masquerade as tempting deals, so a keen eye and cautious approach are paramount. Charitable Giving: Stay Alert The spirit of giving extends beyond gifting to loved ones—it encompasses the noble act of contributing to charitable
causes. However, not all charitable appeals may be genuine. The Hollywood Police Department underscores the importance of verifying the legitimacy of charities before donating. Check registered charities with official state departments and watchdog organizations to ensure your generosity reaches its intended destination. Beware of sound-alike charities and unsolicited requests for sensitive information. Legitimate charities will respect your desire for information through official channels, offering transparency in their dealings. Additionally, familiarize yourself with IRS Guidelines regarding Tax-Exempt Organizations to ensure your contributions are aiding reputable causes. Community Engagement: Join the Cause Beyond shopping safety, the Hollywood Police Department encourages community involvement. The upcoming Hollywood Beach Sweep on December 9th invites volunteers of all ages to join in keeping the scenic beaches pristine. By taking part in this initiative, you’re not just contributing to the environment but also fostering a safer and more beautiful community for all. Join Volunteers this Saturday, December 9th between 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to collect Litter and Cigarette Butts from Sandy Beach. Volunteers meet at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and the
Broadwalk, at 7:00 a.m. Please complete the Registration Form available on the City’s website at: www.hollywoodfl.org. Children ages 8 and older are welcome to participate when accompanied by an adult. Gloves and Garbage Bags will be provided to all Volunteers along with Safety Instructions. Please dress appropriately, wear Sunscreen and bring a completed Registration Form. Don’t forget, Plastic Water Bottles are prohibited on Hollywood Beach, so bring a Reusable Water Bottle instead. This event, while focusing on Beach Cleanliness, embodies the essence of Community Engagement and Safety. Volunteers, equipped with Gloves, Bags and Safety Guidelines, will join hands to make a tangible difference. It’s an opportunity to contribute, bond with fellow residents, and enjoy the season’s spirit in an impactful way. As we gear up for the festivities, let’s arm ourselves with knowledge and vigilance. These Safety Measures from the Hollywood Police Department serve as a guiding light, ensuring our holidays remain merry and worry-free. Embrace the Season’s Joy, Spread Goodwill and above all, Stay Safe! Remember, a safe community begins with each one of us. Self-Care for Sick Days: Navigate A Busy Cough, Cold and Flu Season Flu season in Florida is nothing to sneeze at this year. Medical experts warn of a recent increase in outbreaks of the flu in Florida (Family Features) The change in weather throughout the country inevitably means cough, cold and flu season isn’t far behind. Now is the time to take precautions and set yourself up with healthy habits. “As much as we try, avoiding viruses, bacteria and germs to prevent getting sick can be a challenge,” Dr. Tim Tiutan, MD, said. “However, being prepared with the right remedies, listening to your body and its symptoms and remaining diligent with a healthy routine is just as important as treating symptoms head on.” To help navigate this cough, cold and flu season, consider these tips from Tiutan and the experts at Mucinex.
Prepare and Prevent You won’t find a foolproof way to keep germs away, but you can lessen your chances of getting sick and make sure you’re equipped to weather an illness. • Practice healthy habits. Keeping your body in prime condition can help ensure you’re in the best condition possible to fight back when germs attack. That means keeping up with exercise and ensuring you’re getting enough vitamins and nutrients through a well-balanced diet. • Get a flu shot. The flu shot gives your body a head start in fighting back against flu bugs. If you’re exposed to the flu after receiving the shot, your body can immediately go on the offensive against those germs. You may not stay completely symptom-free, but you’re more likely to experience a mild case and be back on your feet quicker. • Restock the medicine cabinet. The start of cough, cold and flu season is an ideal time to dig through your medicine cabinet. Start by discarding any medications that are out of date and make a list of anything you need to replenish. Be sure to include pain relievers, fever reducers, decongestants, antihistamines and cough syrups to fight symptoms. It’s also a good time to restock items like tissues, cough drops, hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial soap. Treat Symptoms Although the flu can hit fast, it’s often hard to tell at first whether your symptoms are due to a simple cough, cold or a case of the flu. Either way, managing symptoms like a cough can bring relief and help you keep comfortable and get rest. • Give your body time to heal. Sleep plays an important role in your overall health, especially when you’re under the weather. On average, you
need 7-9 hours each night to give your body enough time to fully recharge. When you’re sick, you likely need even more, and it’s a good idea to dial back your activity level, too. Pushing your physical limits often only delays your recovery time. • Take medications as directed. Nagging symptoms can often keep you from getting the sleep you need. One way to give your body the break it needs is to effectively manage symptoms. A hacking cough is a common symptom that can be painful and disrupt your sleep. Consider an option like Mucinex DM 12-Hour, a cough suppresent which relieves chest congestion and thins and loosens mucus, giving you an extended reprieve. It’s clinically proven to last up to 12 hours, provides relief for chest congestion and makes coughs more productive. Prevent Spread Getting sick may be beyond your complete control, but you can take steps to protect others from germs when you’re feeling ill. • Skip socializing. If you’re feeling under the weather, stay home. Even a mild cold can easily spread, and an illness that affects you mildly could cause significant distress for someone else. Avoid unnecessary errands and take advantage of services like curbside pickup if you must get out. Also check with your employer about working remotely if you’re up to it. • Keep germs to yourself. Washing your hands
often, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and sneezing into your elbow if you don’t have a tissue are simple ways you can limit the spread of germs, especially within your home or workspace. Frequently wiping down high-touch surfaces can also help reduce the spread of germs. Cold vs. Flu There’s a lot of overlap between cold and flu symptoms, so it can be tricky to figure out whether the bug you’re fighting is a cold or influenza and how to tackle it. While both the common cold and the flu are respiratory illnesses, they are not caused by the same viruses. Although colds are inconvenient, they are far less likely to develop into anything more serious, as the flu can. What is a Cold? Generally, colds are milder than the flu, and more likely to cause runny or stuffy noses (while the flu can cause stuffy or runny noses, it’s less likely to do so). You won’t feel good, but you’ll probably be able to do some or all of your daily tasks. The flu typically hits harder, making it difficult to go to work or follow your usual routine. What is the Flu? The flu often feels worse than a cold; you might experience the same symptoms but amplified. The flu comes with more pain and fever than a cold. Common flu

Whether you have a cold or the flu, symptom relief is largely the same. Get plenty of rest, drink plenty of fluids and take over-the-counter medicines to relieve symptoms. Stay home to avoid spreading sickness. Wash your hands frequently and cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Watch for shortness of breath, chest or abdomen pain, confusion, sudden dizziness, severe or persistent vomiting and flu symptoms that improve then return with fever and worse cough. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor. Find more ways to stay healthy and limit symptoms by visiting: Mucinex.com.

symptoms include sore throat, chills, fever, runny or stuffy nose, muscle fatigue or aches and headaches. The flu can also develop into more serious conditions and complications, making it more dangerous than the average cold. While the common cold is rarely serious, the flu can be dangerous for young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.
