Mayor Svechin has an open-door policy as she is dedicated to accessibility and transparency (www.sibfl.net) It’s been a little over a year since Mayor Svechin was elected Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach on December 6th, 2022. She made history as the first Woman Mayor in Sunny Isles Beach, first Duly Elected Belorussian-Born Mayor in the U.S. and first Russian Speaking Mayor in the U.S. As a Jewish Immigrant from the Former USSR, her family suffered greatly during Communism, WWI and WWII, losing family to Famine, Deportations to Siberia, and her grandfather and uncle dying in action. The Mayor’s mother was born in a Prison Camp and her father hid from the Nazis together with his four siblings, while his two eldest brothers were at the front. During this time, her grandmother and great aunt risked their lives to bake and deliver Matzah on Passover for the Soviet Jewish Soldiers. Despite both grandmothers not being able to read or write, and one being left a widow, both of the Mayor’s parents and all of their siblings managed to finish school. Sunny Isles Beach, Page 5A

Steps To Start Planning Your Estate in 2024 “Signing the Jewish Future Pledge is more than just an act - it’s a deeply rooted, emotional declaration of my unwavering dedication to my cherished community” (Family Features) Regardless of your age, it’s never too early to plan your Estate and ensure last wishes are met. Estate Planning isn’t just for the wealthy - it’s a process that allows you to determine how your Assets are bequeathed and managed upon incapacitation or death. Aiming to promote cultural preservation and secure funds for Jewish Institutions, the Jewish Future Pledge is a global initiative empowering families to discuss the importance of Estate Planning, including why Patriarchs and Matriarchs should ensure charitable giving continues after their passing. The Organization estimates $68 Trillion will be transferred to the next generation over the next 25 years with around 20% of this wealth coming from Jewish Donors. Discuss these basic Estate Planning Steps with your loved ones and consider consulting an attorney for individual guidance.

Document Wishes Although not typically Legally Binding, preparing a letter of final wishes allows you to share information and requests, like

Funeral Arrangements, which often fall outside of the Will. It may also include an Explanation Of Will Provisions Or Suggestions for how Funds you’ll leave behind should be used. Prepare A Will A Legally Binding Last Will And Testament is often considered the most important aspect of Estate Planning. This involves naming Guardians for Minor Children and Pets, listing all Property, Designating People and Organizations that should receive Assets, directing Funds to Charities and naming an Executor. Consider Causes Important To You As part of Will Creation and Estate Planning, consider Charitable Causes you’d like to support after passing. Talking with loved ones can be a way to gather input on important causes and those conversations can act as a springboard for generations to support a particular cause or organization, based on their shared values. The Jewish Future Pledge asks Jews and their allies to prioritize these intergenerational conversations as they can be catalysts for families to include Jewish Causes and Israel in their Estate Planning to ensure the future of Jewish people. By Signing The Pledge, individuals promise

that 50% or more of the Funds intended for Charity will be earmarked for Jewish Charities or Israel. Taking the Pledge means individuals can ensure their legacy aligns with their values and clarifies their intentions after passing. For those who already donate to Jewish Causes, the Pledge acts as a beacon to others to make the same commitment. “Signing The Jewish Future Pledge is more than just an act - it’s a deeply rooted, emotional declaration of my unwavering dedication to my cherished community,” said Jewish Social Media Influencer and Entrepreneur Elizabeth “Lizzy” Savetsky, who became the 15,000th person to commit to the initiative. “In taking this step, I’m fiercely determined to safeguard the rich values and time-honored traditions that have shaped my identity and the lives of countless others.” Assign Beneficiaries Naming people who should Inherit Assets like Life Insurance Policies or Retirement Accounts is something you may have completed long ago when creating those Assets. However, it’s important to ensure the Beneficiaries named align with your will to avoid conflict as Designated Beneficiaries often take precedence over a Will, which could cre-

ate confusion and Legal Headaches. Regularly Review Your Plan Establishing your Estate Plan is important for ensuring last wishes are met, but it’s also beneficial to revisit the plan regularly to update when necessary. For example, many people review their plans every couple of years or at Major Life Events, such as the Birth of a Child or Grandchild, Marriage or Divorce, Purchasing a Large Asset, Changing Life Insurance Coverage and Career Changes. A Look Back Hallandale Beach On The Past Year Of 2023 We Hit Some Great Milestones By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. As we look back over the past year in Hallandale Beach we have all gone through some challenges and also have plenty we have accomplished. Last year we hit some great milestones. This would not have been possible without a unified Commission, strong City Management and the hard work of all our Staff. This year marks the first full year Chief Michel has served as our Chief. He was originally appointed as our Chief back in June 2022. He continues to lead our department into the future along with his command staff. Over the earlier part of the year, we had witnessed an increase in Gang Violence that has been taking place between Hallandale Beach, Dania Beach, Hollywood and West Park. The incidents that have taken place are all active investigations. Crime Rate Statistics are lagging. So, if you go online you are going to find figures that are before 2023. Our overall Crime Rate has dropped in Hallandale over the past year under his leadership. When he started there were many vacant positions. At one point we were down 20. This year the Chief has been working to fill all positions. Just like other agencies, officers retire, so he has many in the pipeline in the academy. They continue to roll out technologies including expanded License Plate Readers, Spot Shotter and this past year’s Drone Program. They are also working on expanding CCTV throughout the city. While the overall rate is lowered there is an increase in Property Crimes and Thefts. Our City Budget for the first time in a year is stable. I have shared that in 2019 our Budget was dismal. The previous leadership used one-time Revenues and Reserves to balance the budget. The 2023-2024 Budget was balanced without the use of Reserves. To date our budget of $200 Million includes over $80 Million in Capital Projects and many new Management Projects that will move our City forward. They include replacing all of our Water Meters, upgrading our technol-

Sunny Isles Beach From Page 1A In 1979 during the second wave of Immigration from the Soviet Union, Mayor Svechin’s parents and sisters arrived at a Religious Asylum in Miami Beach. Mayor Svechin grew up in what is now Sunny Isles Beach, attended Highland Oaks Junior High School and graduated from North Miami Beach Senior High School. Upon graduation she moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute Of Technology, studying: Painting, Drawing and Toy Design. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree Of Science with a concentration in Philosophy and Ethics from the New School University in New York City.

This year was the first year we debated reducing the Tax Rate in 5 years. This year, we have seen Revitalized Investments by many Developers. Hallandale Beach hit the $1,200 Dollar Per Square Foot in the Residential Real Estate Market. 2000 Ocean opened and in less than 6 months the price went from $2.6 Million to $3.5 Plus Million. Slate, a Luxury Rental Building opened. The Diplomat Golf Course Reopened with a Membership Fee of $1 Million Dollars. They have also opened up sales for their Residential/Hotel. Other Projects that are Under Construction or opened around the City include Workforce and Affordable Housing. The most recent building to open is Solaris right next to Bluesten Park. It has a mix of Units from One to Three Bedrooms. Their Three-bedroom Unit is $1,785 Per Month. I had a chance to visit and take a tour. The Units, Amenities and Buildings are truly remarkable! Affordable Housing is no longer the project of the past. Next year we are proud to say many more units will be on their way and provide much needed housing relief. The Office Market continues to thrive. Atlantic III Opened and Atlantic IV is get-

ting ready to be opened to Tenants. Optima Tower opened on Federal Highway and boasts Luxury Office Spaces with a Pool and Work-Out Facilities for their Tenants. Oasis has also Opened its first Office Building and has just received its Temporary Certificate on the Second Office Building facing Hallandale Beach Boulevard. This means that their tenants will begin their build out. 2023 also brought with it many challenges. The 1,000-Year Rain Event created havoc and Floods. This year I fought, and we placed another Major Drainage Pumping Project on the books for the Northeast Area. We continued to have strange weather with Storms that had Strong Winds and Heavy Rain. Thankfully, we had no Major Hurricanes! With the Ukraine War still raging we as a society were faced with the horrific events in Israel. Our City was put on Alert and remains vigilant in protecting our many Jewish Temples and Schools. As the war continues, we as a commission have stood firm against Antisemitism. We are the first City in the U.S. to adopt

Upon graduation Mayor Svechin remained in New York City, first Managing Restaurants in Greenwich Village, and then deciding on a Career in Advertising. It was during this time that she quickly rose the ranks to become Senior Vice President Director Of Print, Managing over $300M in Advertising Spending, of what is today one of the three leading global advertising companies. This is when she learned Critical Negotiating Skills, Budgeting Million-Dollar Contracts and mastering managing a large staff across five offices in the U.S. and in Canada. At the turn of the century, Mayor Svechin met her husband and started a family, settling in Tribeca, New York City. As her family grew and her parents in Sunny Isles Beach aged, the Mayor and her husband decided to move back to

Sunny Isles Beach permanently in 2009. With the birth of their fourth child, the Mayor and her husband became increasingly more involved in the community. Mayor Svechin joined the boards of: The Sunny Isles Beach PTSA, Friends Of Oleta Park, Citizen’s Coalition For Public Education, Critical Supports For Holocaust Survivors, multiple state legislative committees, Human Trafficking Task Force, EESAC and also launched the Sunny Isles Beach Women’s Club. This was the beginning of her commitment to serve the City of Sunny Isles Beach. He brought back to the school a great vision and had already reduced Discipline Issues by 28%. Both Gulfstream K-8 and High School have a C Grade. WE all need to work together to improve these grades! In January they will be selecting a new principal and will be asking the community to weigh in. There will be a meeting for all partners on Thursday, January 11th, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. This will be to have a conversation about the future Principal. As we look to 2024 I will also be looking towards next year. We have much to be thankful for. We all know that many in our City are still struggling. We will continue to support programs at the Hepburn Center and our CRA to provide a hand up and assistance to those in need.

4 Tips To Mind Your Mental Health In 2024 (Family Features)

Whether you talk in person, by video or text, make time to talk to family and friends There’s never a bad time to commit to managing your Mental Health, but the new year tends to make wellness a bigger priority. Wellness resolutions often focus on diet and exercise, but taking steps to improve your Mental Well-Being is equally important. In fact, your Mental Health can play a critical role in your Physical Health. Stress, Anxiety and other Manifestations of Mental and Emotional Distress can trigger Physiological Responses in your body that may erode your health over time. For example, if you’re continually under a high level of Stress, chances are your Blood Pressure runs higher than it should, and that in turn poses a risk for Heart Disease and related conditions. As you turn the page toward 2024, renew your commitment to self-care and managing your Mental Health with these tips: 1. Set realistic goals. Having something to work toward and look forward to is a healthy way to occupy your mind. Decide what you’d like to achieve this year and identify milestones toward your ultimate goal. Celebrating when you achieve each milestone can keep you motivated and help measure your progress along the way.

2. Nurture personal relationships. Loneliness is a major contributor to Mental Health Struggles and having even a couple close relationships can help provide you with an essential sense of connection and belonging. Whether you talk in person, by video or text, make time to talk to family and friends. If you find your circle is smaller than you’d like, try taking a class or joining an organization where you can meet others who share your interests. 3. Alleviate Stress. A little bit of pressure can push you to

do your best, but living in a Constant State of Stress can be bad for your health. Take time to understand your Stress Triggers and actively work to avoid them. If that’s not fully possible, dedicate a portion of each day to De-Stressing and clearing your mind. You might choose Meditation, Exercise, Reading or Listening to Music, all of which let you relax your mind and focus your attention on something else. 4. Sleep more. Getting enough sleep means 7-9 hours each night, according to most experts, as

it’s one of the best ways to protect your Overall Health and ensure you’re in the right frame of mind to approach the day. When you’re sleep deprived, you’re less capable of problem-solving, making decisions and managing your emotions and behavior. Studies have also shown poor sleep habits are linked to Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and other Mental Health Conditions. If winding down is an issue, try creating a bedtime routine that makes it easier to get to sleep. Find more tips to promote healthy living at: www.eLivingtoday.com

After two years of Fundraising and Outreach, the group opened the doors of The Key Clubhouse in July 2010 in Downtown Miami to its first 10 members.

Dr. Chander Gupta presents Marilyn Markus-Lieberman an award appreciation for being a guest speaker at the event The Clubhouse quickly outgrew its small office space and moved to the Dr. Barbara Carey-Shuler Supportive Housing Complex in 2013, where it operated until July 2021. Through a partnership with Carrfour Supportive Housing, the Clubhouse moved into a new 5,000 Square Foot space in July 2021 on the bottom floor of Northside Commons, an 80-Unit Supportive Housing Complex built primarily for: Low-Income Individuals living with Serious Mental Illness. Approximately half of the apartment units are occupied with Members of The Key Clubhouse. In this location, the Clubhouse is expanding its program to serve more individuals in the community who can benefit from its rehabilitation, Socialization and Employment Services. A Sunrise Run For Fun The Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Half Marathon & 5K It’s that time of year. Don’t miss out on the most unique event format in South Florida! The Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Half Marathon & 5K! Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet? How about a half marathon to start off 2024, plus it could help you lose some holiday season weight. This isn’t your traditional Half Marathon & 5K, you will be able to watch the sunrise over the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and hear the sounds of waves crashing as you run just steps from the beach! Win! Win! If that interests you then here is some good news. The Hollywood Beach Half Marathon and 5K is back in a few weeks at Hollywood North Beach Park. Hollywood Beach is a popular stop on the Elite Events South Florida Half Marathon Tour. Hollywood hosts multiple races this year, January & November. The beautiful pre-dawn and sunrise start and run along the Broadwalk are a huge draw for people from all over the U.S. The events take athletes through the eclectic, beautiful area and many stay in local hotels for the weekend. What To Expect The event features a start right near Hollywood North Beach Park. The course takes you through the iconic Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, an award-winning beach promenade featuring miles of pristine beach, a picturesque broadwalk, and an array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. The route follows the beach giving you spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, and the chance to feel the sand under your feet and the ocean breeze in your hair immediately after you finish. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out, this event has something to offer for everyone, with both Half marathon and 5K options. At the start of the race runners will run along the picturesque Hollywood Broadwalk for miles as the sun comes up. A quick U-turn takes athletes back heading north on the Broadwalk with a good opportunity to see how your friends are doing amid magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. The course takes runners to North Surf Road to again run parallel to the Atlantic, running through a shaded tree tunnel before starting a second loop, until reaching nearly the end of the Broadwalk and Harry Berry Park. A beautiful finisher’s medal for both the Half Marathon and 5K plus lots of snacks await at the finish line! As an added benefit you will also get a close up tour of the best that Hollywood Beach has to offer. Both races are also a part of the very popular South Florida Half Marathon Tour! But the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line! Hollywood is a city that offers a great blend of culture, entertainment, and outdoor activities. After the race, treat yourself to a well-deserved meal at one of the many Seafood Restaurants, and explore the city’s art scene by visiting one of the many galleries or the Artspark at Young Circle. Take a stroll on the beach, and enjoy the tranquil Gulf waters, or head back over to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk for a leisurely walk with stunning views of the ocean. Hollywood also offers a variety of fun activities, perfect for families and friends such as visiting the Hollywood Beach Theater where you can enjoy free live performances, or visiting the Hollywood Trolley, an open-air bus that takes you around the city’s famous sights and land-

Picasso & Max: These Two Will Will Start Your Year Off With Love Can you say handsome boy? Max is just gorgeous and so unique! This polka dog fellow is a sporting dog, possibly part pointer, with lots of energy to go on adventures with you. He is super friendly with everybody and seems to adapt well to any environment. Some of his favorite hobbies are doing the zoomies, playing with toys, and learning commands for treats. Max is crate trained and he is just a puppy at one year of age. Max would do well with another dog friend of equal energy. Come and check out Max to see if you and he are a good fit. If you like fine art, then Picasso is waiting to meet you at the Humane Society of Broward County. This one-yearold, black and white, emerald-green eyed beauty was transferred to the shelter from another facility, so his background is a mystery. He is only 8 1/2 pounds and loves getting lots of pets and snuggling in his bed.

Adopting a pet is not a one person decision. Make sure other members of your household are aware you want to add a pet and should meet the pet before you decide to adopt. Also consider: • Does anyone have allergies? • Are other members of the household, including children, afraid of animals? • Are you expecting other members of the household to share in the care of the pet? Another factor to consider is cost. The initial and on-going costs of a new pet can add up. These costs include: Adoption fees, Food, Grooming, Obedience training, Pet supplies, and Licensing. Additional veterinary care such as diagnostic testing and preventative medication can add up in the future, so make sure to take this all under consideration prior to adopting. These costs can easily be $200400 or more within the first few weeks of adoption.

The Humane Society of Broward County recommends that you do not immediately expose your existing pets to a new pet. Facilitating positive pet-to-pet introductions will require some management on your part. Not all pets are instant friends and may require temporary or intermittent separation to ensure a smooth transition. Some pets are happy to share their home within a week or two, others may take a month or longer to adjust. Our adoption staff will be happy to review steps to properly introduce your new pet to your resident pets. All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a new family and may require house training and behavior training to correct prob-
