Congratulations to Qunea Gordon and the entire Community Civic Association for creating such a wonderful Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Weekend. Our City is extremely proud of the work of the entire CCC Team, our Staff and every partner who made it a great breakfast parade and festival at OB Johnson Park. I also want to recognize Ms Qunea Gordon as our 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award Recipient. For our readers who do not know “Q” she is truly a worthy recipient. Ms. Gordon was born and raised in Hallandale Beach. She attended Hallandale High School where in addition to excellence in academics she was part of the State Championship Girls Basketball Team. This was the first award received by a
team in the new Hallandale High School. Qunea went on to college and then began her career right here in Broward County. She recently retired from Broward County where she worked on a special team implementing county wide GIS. She has always given back to our City and community. She has served on our Human Service Board working side by side with our Staff ensuring their safety nets are available for our underserved. If you want a unique vantage point for learning about different parts of the world, exploring the small towns, iconic cities and countries along a river is sure to open your eyes, heart and mind. Did you know you can make the river the foundation of your travel plans by exploring via small ship with other like-minded travelers? No one does river cruises better than Viking, the small ship experts. These adults-only ships provide all of what you want - comfortable accommodations and ample opportunity to experience some of the world’s most interesting and significant rivers. And there’s none of the unnecessary flair - like the flashy casinos and tired art auctions of traditional cruises. If the idea of river exploration inspires your wanderlust, here are five of the best rivers around the world that are perfect for exploring by way of a river voyage.
1. Rhine River From the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the Rhine River flows through several European countries including Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. Raise a glass on Viking’s Award-Winning Longship while sailing the Rhine River and see how the historic river system unfolds to create a spellbinding display of storybook villages, Dutch windmills, German vineyards and splendid UNESCO sites. Enjoy Amsterdam’s charming canals and gabled houses, windmills of Kinderdijk, Cologne’s Gothic Cathedral, breathtaking views of the legendary Black Forest and much more. 2. Danube River From awe-inspiring cliffside castles to charming river towns, you’ll enjoy a trip of a lifetime when you explore the Danube River via small ship. Coursing through Germany, Austria, Hungary and seven other countries all the way to the Black Sea, the Danube is a key part of Central Europe’s rich and dramatic history. Just a few highlights you can see during a river cruise while exploring the Danube include the lush vineyards of the Wachau Valley, the baroque splendor of Melk Abbey, Vienna’s elegant architecture, Budapest’s stunning Chain Bridge, the soaring cliffs of the scenic Iron Gate and Belgrade’s impressive Kalemegdan Fortress.

From Lisbon’s stunning Manueline architecture and Vila Real’s extraordinary Mateus Palace to the hilltop fortress town of Castelo Rodrigo and the tiny village of Favaios, nestled among picturesque hills - you will fall in love with this incredible country and the river that has always helped sustain it. 4. Seine River Bypass the basics and instead explore France in a unique way - via a river cruise on the Seine. Meander the river through medieval ruins, charming farms, elegant cities and much more. You’ll experience France’s culture and history in a way that will leave a lasting impression while in the comfort and style of an elegant river voyage. A few of the sights you’ll enjoy include the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral, Claude Monet’s beautiful house and gardens at Giverny, Normandy’s historic beaches and Château de Malmaison, Napoleon’s final home. 5. Mississippi River There’s a reason it’s known as the mighty Mississippi: Stretching for 2,350 miles north to south in the United States, this river has transformed a nation’s history and culture. A great option for those who want to travel closer to home, you can sail through America’s heartland on one of Viking’s newest river ships that features all outside staterooms, private verandas and spacious public areas. The French Quarter in New Orleans, Graceland in Tennessee, Civil War history in Vicksburg National Military Park, and The Gateway Arch in St. Louis are just a few of the places you’ll experience on a River voyage. Mr. Bubbles & Ruby: Playful & Fun To Add To Your Family Mr. Bubbles wants to make memories with you. This exuberant, fun-loving fellow LOVES tennis balls and loves toys that squeak! He can often be seen carrying multiple toys around in his mouth. Mr. Bubbles came from another shelter, so his past is a mystery. If you’re about to throw a ball, he will sit if you ask him to. This two-year-old ball of energy would benefit from having a backyard to run around in and an active family who can tire him out. Are you the family for Mr. Bubbles? Beautiful Ruby sadly lost her home because someone is allergic to her. Her former family described her as being very curious and very playful. She lived with a big dog at home and Ruby was in charge. This long-haired beauty is sweet, loving and will need to be brushed on a regular basis so she is always looking her best. She likes getting petted and is very curious with strangers. Preparing To Adopt If you lease your home, check with your landlord before adopting to be sure you are allowed to have a pet and can afford all required pet deposits. Pets are sometimes returned because of lease restrictions and/or landlord’s disapproval of the pet chosen. This can be an expensive lesson since the adoption fees are nonrefundable and being returned to the shelter can be a stressful experience for the animal. Adopting a pet is not a one person decision. Make sure other members of your household are aware you want to add a pet and should meet the pet before you decide to adopt. Also consider: Does anyone have allergies? Are other members of the household, including
children, afraid of animals? Are you expecting other members of the household to share in the care of the pet? Another factor to consider is cost. The initial and ongoing costs of a new pet can add up. These costs include: Adoption Fees, Food, Grooming, Obedience Training, Pet Supplies, and Licensing. Additional Veterinary Care such as: Diagnostic Testing and Preventative Medications can add up in the future, so make sure to take this all under consideration prior to adopting. These costs can easily be $200-400 or more within the first few weeks of adoption. Other Pets The Humane Society of Broward County recommends that you do not immediately expose your existing pets to a new pet. Consider how you will manage an isolation period and be sure all existing pets are up to date on vaccinations and other routine health care before bringing a new pet home. Facilitating positive pet-to-pet introductions will require some management on your part too. Not all pets are instant friends and may require temporary or intermittent separation to ensure a smooth transition. Some pets are happy to share their home within a week or two, others may take a month or longer to adjust. Our Adoption
Staff will be happy to review steps to properly introduce your new pet to your resident pets. Time Commitment All dogs and cats making the transition to a new home will need time to adjust to a new family and may require House Training and Behavior Training to correct Problem Behavior. If you aren’t prepared to invest your time to teach your new pet appropriate behavior and help the animal adjust, you should not consider adopting a pet at this time. Positive Reinforcement-Based Training is recommended for all newly adopted Dogs and Puppies. Please make a lifetime commitment to your pet. Remember that the animal you choose has already been abandoned or unwanted at least once in its life. Dogs and Cats may live 12 to 15 years or more. Your thoughtful consideration, preparation and commitment will help ensure a lifelong placement. Supplies Before bringing your Dog, Cat, or Critter home, make sure you have the supplies to properly care for the newest member of your household. From toys and leashes to treats and litter pans, the adoption centers have a wide variety of merchandise available for purchase. Their staff can help you find the right products for your pet.
To meet Mr. Bubbles (ID 677198), Ruby (ID 677380) or any other pet, visit: www.humanebroward.com and fill out the Pre-Adoption Application. Then, stop by the Humane Society of Broward County located at: 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33312 - a block west of I-95. The Adoption Department opens daily at 11:00 a.m. and if you have any questions, call: (954) 989-3977. Extension#: 6.

Mayor Cooper and Commissioner Lazarow joined City staff and the Community Civic Association again this year at the annual Dr Martin Luther King, Jr Day Celebration
Hallandale Beach From Page 1A our City which before the 1970’s was Segregated. Their focus was to create and address Fair Housing, Equal Educational Opportunities, Access to Health Services, Public Safety and the Overall Well Being of the area. Approximately 15 years ago they changed their name to Hallandale Beach Community Civic Association to focus on the entire west side of our City. The super majority of our Single-Family Homes are west of Federal Highway. These homeowners share many of the same concerns and issues. They meet the last Tuesdays of every month at OB Johnson Park. I encourage our residents to participate. Visit their Facebook page at Hallandale Beach Community Civic Association (https://m.facebook.com/ people/Hallandale-Beach-CommunityCivic-Association-Inc/100067017494483/) for more information. While our City has, and society has evolved there is still plenty of work to be done. We all continue to focus on fair housing that is affordable not just in the west but throughout the City. There are many issues facing our schools. Currently the Broward School Board is working to hire a new principal at Gulfstream Academy of Hallandale Beach K-8. We all need to follow this critical issue since Principal Carlton Campbell passed away. He certainly was amazing and while he cannot be replaced we need a leader that will emulate his legacy. We all also need to focus on the changes taking place when it comes to Voting. Every single resident needs to double check their Voting Registration. Currently there was a change on the State and County Levels that moved many Voters that have been inactive. They have not all been purged but if you have not Voted in the past two years your Registration is at risk. There are proposed changes to Vote By Mail. We are not sure how this proposal will play out. If you want to Vote By Mail you do have to request it annually
already. In a previous Legislative Session, the Law was changed to prevent Voters from automatically staying on the Vote By Mail List. As we move into a presidential year it is crucial everyone who can Vote is Registered. Everyone should be Voting as there are many Elections in our State, County and Municipality taking place. There will also be Ballot Initiatives that will profoundly impact our day to day lives and liberties. I spoke at the MLK Festival about not sitting out Elections. Dr. King gave his life for Democracy. As we have seen it is very fragile and needs to be nurtured and cared for. We may not like the choices we end up with on the Ballot in November. We all need to remember we cannot let perfect get in the way of good. Do not sit home saying I do not like either candidate. My one Vote will not matter. With a close Election and a polarized citizenry every Vote will certainly matter. Visit the Broward Supervisor Of Elections by searching: www.BrowardVotes.com - or Check your Registration, register to Vote and if you need to request a Mail-In Ballot. Save The Date Saturday, February 10th at OB Johnson Park there will be a Family Field Day and Resource Fair presented by ONE City which is a project of Memorial Hospital. Over the past months I have been collaborating with PAL, Project Love, and Advise Athletes to put together a day to unite the entire city. There will be a field day, entertainment with the goal of unity and community healing and many community partners with vital city and county services to help all ages. If you are interested in becoming a vendor please reach out to me at: joycooper@aol.com Wishing You A Blessed New Year! As always please feel free to contact me anytime with your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our city a better place. I am available at: jcooper@cohb.org, joycooper@aol.com, office number 954-457-1318 or cell/text 954-6325700. You can always visit my Facebook and follow me at Mayor Joy Cooper.
