Everyday heroes often operate in the background, unnoticed yet indispensable. Such is the case with bus operators, professionals whose expertise and commitment ensure the seamless movement of a bustling community. But once a year, they step into the spotlight for an event that celebrates their skills, precision, and dedication: the Broward County Transit 2025 Bus Safety Roadeo. This year, for the first time, the Roadeo leaves the closed gates of its traditional venue at
the Copans Garage and moves to the open spaces of the Amerant Bank Arena Park and Ride Lot at Gate 7. Scheduled for Sunday, February 2, 2025, this historic shift transforms the competition into a public display, inviting families, transit enthusiasts, and curious residents to witness firsthand the incredible talents of BCT’s finest bus operators. The thrill begins as 11 of BCT’s most skilled operators navigate an intricate obstacle course, their movements precise
The 2025 competition welcomes “Flash” Jacquan, the 2024 Broward County Roadeo winner and standout participant. In 2023, he secured the Rookie of the Year title at the state level, ranking seventh out of 19 skilled competitors—a testament to his expertise and dedication. Though Jacquan isn’t competing this year, his presence exemplifies the camaraderie and shared passion that makes the Roadeo special. But this isn’t just a test
of skill; it’s a celebration for the entire community. The Roadeo has evolved into a family-friendly festival with food trucks offering diverse cuisines, family-friendly games and activities, giveaways, and a festive atmosphere. With live DJ and radio broadcasts, the day promises memorable entertainment for all ages.
At the heart of the event is a deeper message: public transit’s critical role in connecting people to jobs and essential services. Events like the Roadeo offer a glimpse into the professionalism and dedication behind each bus ride, reminding us of the oftenoverlooked individuals who keep Broward County moving.
“This year’s Roadeo is a unique opportunity to bring our
community closer to the transit system,” said Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO/General Manager of Broward County Transit. “It’s a celebration not just of skill but of the community connection that underlines Broward County Transit.”
The day culminates with an award ceremony at 12:30 PM, honoring the operators who have excelled in the competition. Beyond the trophies, the winners earn the privilege of representing Broward County Transit at the 2025 Florida Triple Crown Roadeo in Gainesville later this month. If they win at the State level, they will have the distinct honor of representing BCT at the International Bus Roadeo in Austin, TX in April.
So, mark your calendars, grab your loved ones, and head to the Amerant Bank Arena on Sunday, February 2, 2025, beginning at 8:30 AM for an unforgettable day of fun, community, and awe-inspiring skill. For more details, visit Broward.org/BCT or call Customer Service at 954-357-8400.

Audiences will relive the joyous sounds of the ‘60s with The Lovin’ Spoonful, a group whose infectious hits and sunny melodies made them one of the decade’s most beloved bands. Known as America’s answer to the Beatles, the group exploded onto the charts sending their first seven singles soaring onto Billboard’s Top 10 chart virtually overnight. Their first single, “Do You Believe In Magic,” flew to the top of the charts and was followed by an unprecedented string of hits including: “Daydream,” “Younger Girl,” “Summer In The City,” “You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice,” “Coconut Grove” and “She’s Still A Mystery (To Me),” among others. His path-breaking leadership continued in 2015, when he was elected to the North Miami City Council to represent District 4. Over the years, he

His tenure as Vice Mayor — in 2016 — solidified his reputation as a trailblazer and an advocate for the community. Throughout his career, Mayor Desulme has championed innovative programs that enrich the lives of North Miami residents. His creation of the Golden Silver Senior Program provided critical support and resources to the city’s senior population. Through initiatives like “Let’s Eat Healthy,” he works to ensure residents have access to fresh, nutritious food. His efforts to establish North Miami’s first Housing and Social Services Department have transformed the city’s ability to address housing stability and social equity, laying the foundation for a thriving, inclusive com-
munity.
Passionate about preparing the next generation, Mayor Desulme founded the NoMi Leaders in Training Program — better known as L.I.T. — to inspire and equip future public servants. This program seamlessly integrates with the Youth Opportunity Board (YOB) Summer Internship Program, giving young leaders invaluable experience and insight into civic engagement. In addition to his role as Mayor of North Miami — Mayor Desulme continues to inspire through his work as an Adjunct Professor at St. Thomas University and as an Educational Consultant. With a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership, his research on reducing truancy in public charter schools underscores his commitment to addressing sys-
temic educational challenges and creating pathways for student success. Since first being appointed as Mayor of North Miami in December 2022, Mayor Desulme has continued to lead with compassion, vision, and an unwavering focus on progress. Under his leadership, the city has embraced Transformative Initiatives in Economic Development, Infrastructure Improvements, Environmental Sustainability and Community Empowerment. “Sunness Supper Club is named after my grandfather so to say it’s something close to my heart is an understatement,” says Michael, who is no stranger to the industry though SSC is the first brick n’ mortar concept under his belt. Prior to SSC he owned and operated MK Takeaways, a ghost kitchen concept which delivered fresh, made-from-scratch, Chef-prepared meals to homes; before that he enjoyed many successful years in food service as the founder of an organic baby food company – Yummy in my Tummy – and prior to that, as the Director Of Operations for Tequila Ranch at The Park Sports Club. Speaking to his first full-service dining concept, he adds “I wanted to create a space where people can come together to enjoy delicious and high-quality food and drinks with a touch of magic in the air. Mood, music and lighting are key and no detail has been overlooked in the design. I want the Sunness Supper Club to be a place where memories are made and good times are had.”
Drawing inspiration from his childhood as well as South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup, SSC’s tempting menu was conceptualized by Michael in collaboration with James Beard Award-Winning Chef Allen Susser. Blending classic American cuisine with global influences, and showcasing mindfully-sourced ingredients, the vibrant menu ranges from fresh raw bar items and flavorful appetizers to main plates starring steaks, chops and seafood as well as modern-day comfort dishes.
Among the starting plates, highlights include East and West Coast Oysters; Crudo; Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Cakes with Corn Salsa and Tartar Sauce; French Onion Soup topped with a Cheesy Crouton; Wood Fire Blistered Elote with Queso Fresco and Peruvian Verde; Brooklyn Burrata served with Cherry Tomatoes and Aged Balsamic; and a “Table Tossed” Caesar for two. The menu also features seriously tantalizing options from the land and sea such as Filet Mignon served with Red Potato Mash and Demi-Glaze; Wagyu Beef Skirt Steak & Frites accompanied by Chimichurri Sauce; Heritage Pork Chop with Crispy Red Bliss Potato Mash; Lobster Tail served with Jasmine Rice and Tangerine Ginger Butter; and a special Catch of the Day with Broccolini and Fire Roasted Lemon. Additional favorites include modern-day comforts such as a Double American Cheese Burger prepared with a Brisket, Chuck and Short Rib Patty and topped with Pickles and Sautéed Onions; Cabernet Braised Short Rib served with Mashed Red Potatoes and Honey Garlic Carrots; and Shrimp & Grits with Shallots, Cheddar Cheese and Bacon.
Make sure to save room for dessert as the restaurant’s lineup of dazzling sweet temptations – as photo worthy as they are indulgent – include S’mores Galore Brownie topped with Hershey’s Chocolate, Graham Crackers, Whipped Cream and Jumbo Marshmallows toasted tableside and a Berrylicious Shortcake made with a Buttered Biscuit topped with Fresh Strawberries, a cloud of Cotton Candy and a Grand Marnier Strawberry Drizzle poured tableside; among several other confections. The true star of the dessert lineup is a whimsical Wonder Wheel, featuring a mini-Ferris wheel filled with an assortment of Sweet, Fruity and Chocolate Treats, but the real magic lies in that a portion of each Wonder Wheel sale benefits a local charity.
Overseeing the creation of the restaurant’s sure-to-be dazzling bar program is mixologist Ally Champion, formerly of
Gastrotech and Apothecary 330. For Sunness Supper Club, she has created a vibrant beverage list that expertly pairs with the culinary offerings including a lineup of handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and artisanal spirits. Cocktails include: Silver Springs – Soto Sake, Walcher Melon, Fresh Lemon Juice and Kiwi; Weird & Unusual – Bayab Gin, Singani63, Rocky’s Botanical Liqueur, Fresh Lemon Juice, Grape and Thyme; Live Love Chuckle – Chuckle Rum, RumHaven Coconut Rum, Fresh Lemon Juice, Sweet Matcha and Watermelon; Hippie Invasion – GinRaw, Lemon Juice, Basil Syrup, Egg White, Balsamic Glaze, Fresh Cracked Pepper and Cherry Tomato and Mozzarella Garnish; Devils Den – Lost Explorer Blanco Tequila, Lime Juice, Sweet Pepper Syrup, Orange Infused Salt and Tajín; and Southern Gentleman – Old Forester 100 Proof Bourbon, house made Dr. Pepper Syrup, Black Walnut, Cardamon, Filthy Cherry and Orange Twist; among several other handcrafted libations.
Though SSC enjoys great frontage on East Sunrise Boulevard, the actual entrance is in the rear of the building, adjacent to more than 75 free parking spots. Upon entering and checking in, guests are led down a winding hallway reminiscent of a secret passage, leading into the close to 6,000 square-foot restaurant seating 130. Its thoughtful design showcases a chic yet warm color palette of sage green and neutrals complemented by artisanal touches of wood, marble, leather, and gold. A focal point of the space, an expansive U-shaped marble bar adorned with hanging wood-finished wine racks that seats close to 30. Adjacent to the bar, two spacious banquettes which can be turned into an ad hoc private space. Table seating includes a mix of

low- and high-top tables, half-moon booths and two elongated booths suited to comfortably seat large parties. Adding dimension between the bar area and dining room, bottle selections are displayed in elegant glass and wood cabinets at the center of the restaurant. A wood-fired oven just on the other side of the bar further contributes to the warmth of the space, more figurative than literal. In the Spring of 2025, the second phase of the concept, an upstairs speakeasy overlooking the dining room, will be open and operational. With its eye-catching design, exceptional cuisine, vibrant atmosphere and dedication to service, Sunness Supper Club is poised to become a bright spot on Fort Lauderdale’s dining map in 2025.

Registration Underway For Kids & Adults For Spring Classes At Broward Center For The Performing Arts
For more than a decade, the Broward Center for the Performing Arts has been educating, entertaining and energizing the community with an impressive lineup of classes for all ages and skill levels. Registration is now underway for spring classes. While several classes are already filled, there are still classes open for enrollment in all age groups.
Voted Favorite Arts Program by South Florida Family Magazine from 2018 through 2024, the Broward Center’s Performing Arts Programs allow participants to learn something new, try something different and explore their creative side from a talented team of theater professionals. With many classes ending with showcases and performances at the Broward Center, these skillsbuilding and performance classes in singing, dancing, acting and improv are designed to encourage artistic expression, develop skills in all areas of the performing arts and help students build self-confidence in a fun and supportive environment.
Among the classes that have openings for students from Kindergarten through High School are:
Dramatic Play: Oh, The Places You’ll Go, is an introductory acting class for Kindergarteners. Themed around popular children’s books, this class is a fun and creative opportunity for kids to act out exciting adventures through the world of popular tales. Through role-playing and dramatic play, kids explore new locations, partake in new adventures and build characters as they learn about story structure while growing their vocabulary, self-esteem, creativity and problemsolving skills.
Let’s Explore A Show! is a class designed for young performers in grades 1-3. This unique theater experience introduces students to the captivating journey of bringing a show to life, from auditions to final bows. Team-taught by a professional vocal instructor and a professional choreographer, this
performance class allows young students to explore the basics of acting, singing and dancing while experiencing the process of auditions, rehearsals and putting on scenes and songs from the show ‘Could You Hug A Cactus?’ A script and basic costume is included with the class fee.
Intro to Musical Theater is offered in age-appropriate classes for grades K-2 and 3-5 as each explores the dynamic world of musical theater to develop the basics of singing, dancing and acting using songs and choreography from a wide range of popular Broadway musicals in a supportive environment. Additionally, students learn stage directions, basic dance steps, terminology and also engage in healthy vocal production techniques. Family and friends are invited to an open class at the end of the semester and two sessions of this class are recommended.
Students in grades 3-5 take their musical theater skills to the next level in Sing! Act! Dance! This exciting, teamtaught class, led by a professional music director and choreographer, is perfect for those who are ready to build on what they’ve learned in Intro to Musical Theater, and helps young performers master singing, dancing and acting within the context of a Broadway scene. Through engaging vocal warm-ups, choreography sequences and character-building exercises, students develop strong, healthy singing voices, sharpen their dance technique and hone their acting skills. By combining all three elements, students gain the confidence and technical ability needed to shine, creating a powerful stage presence in every performance. Two semesters of Intro to Musical Theater (or similar class) are recommended as a prerequisite.
Students in grades 4-6 explore the basics of acting and improv through fun and dynamic Theater Games. This engaging and interactive class is designed for all levels and focuses on building foundational skills such as character development, quick thinking and collaboration. Through a variety of
creative exercises, students learn how to express themselves confidently on stage while working as part of an ensemble.
Acting & Improv is available for students in grades 6-8 and explores the “fun”damentals of acting and improv skills. Students also explore how to use their bodies, voices and minds to create characters and imaginary circumstances. Through interactive warm-ups and skillsbuilding activities, students develop improv and acting techniques as they build confidence and stretch their imagination. All levels are welcome.
Available for students in grades 6-12, Broadway Dance Skills is the exploration of traditional and contemporary Broadway dance that include elements of Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance. This is the perfect class for students who want to improve their dance foundation and focus on steps and routines found in musical theater dance. Students will refine skills for auditions and performances. This intermediate/advanced-level class hones students’ core technique while introducing a variety of movement styles. Previous dance and/or musical theater experience recommended.
Principles of acting are explored in Teen Acting, a fun and supportive class created specifically for students in grades 9-12. Actors learn to “dig deep” in this foundational class, exploring basic acting techniques, analyzing scripts and developing full-bodied characters from the inside out using monologues and scenes taken from contemporary plays. Warmups, theater games and in-class performances help students grow in selfconfidence, public speaking and creativity. Family and friends are invited to a showcase at the end of the semester.
All Abilities classes are also open for enrollment and provide interactive and engaging arts experiences in a supportive and welcoming environment for people with Physical and Developmental Disabilities. The Broward Center’s teaching artists lead a fun dance and singing experience for the whole family. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay

David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen
Ross Opens at Empire Stage
Empire Stage and ArtBuzz Theatrics will present Glengarry Glen Ross, David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play from February 7th through February 23rd at the popular Fort Lauderdale venue. The production will be helmed by noted director Amir Darvish.
Based on Mamet’s own experience working in a real estate agency, the play depicts two days in the lives of four desperate Chicago real estate agents who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical, illegal acts—from lies and flattery to bribery, threats, intimidation and burglary—to sell real estate to unwitting prospective buyers.
“I was drawn to directing Glengarry Glen Ross because of its exploration of corporate and personal greed, cutthroat business practices, and, of course, David Mamet’s razor-sharp dialogue,” Darvish says.
“What fascinated me most was the chance to dive into the deeper layers of ambition, desperation, and the ethical dilemmas people face — the relentless drive to succeed at any cost. In today’s cultural and political climate, these themes feel more relevant than ever.” Darvish’s cast includes Michael Small as Shelley Levine, Matthew Schenk as John Williamson, Eric Purcell as Dave
Moss, Harry Redlich as George Aaronow, David R. Gordon as Richard Roma, Michael Vadnal as James Lingk, and Bob Sharkey as Baylen.
Preston Bircher will serve as the pro duction’s lighting designer, and David Hart will design the sound. Set and costume design is by Larry Buzzeo, who will also serve as the production’s stage manager.
“This may well be the most accom plished play its author has yet given us. As Mr. Mamet’s command of dialogue has now reached its most dazzling pitch, so has his mastery of theatrical form.” Frank Rich – The New York Times
Glengarry Glen Ross will run from February 7th through February 23rd at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $40 and may be purchased online at: https://empirestage.com/ or by calling: 954-678-1496.

Holocaust Memorial And Immigration
Hallandale
This Monday was the 80th Anniversary of the Remembrance of the Holocaust. As a daughter of a WWII Veteran, it is also in my opinion to remember the many Veteran “Liberators.” Yes, it is true that America sadly sat by the sidelines while the final solution was being conducted. Winston Churchill pleaded for our country to help Europe as they fought against Hitler and the Nazi Extremism.
My father did not speak about the war until he himself was reaching his late seventies. He met a group of Holocaust survivors at an event at our wonderful Chabad. One of the survivors kindly reached out to get his attention and thanked him for being a WWII hero and helping to end the war and liberate the camps.
Words cannot express how this changed my father’s view of WWII. He had carried his memories like many soldiers. They were too painful and guilt ridden. These few heartfelt words of thanks opened his heart and lifted the guilt he had from bombing his parents’ home country of Italy. He felt a weight lifted and was able to talk about his missions. He had gone on over fifty-four such bombings and bailed out twice, receiving two Purple Hearts.
Over the past year watching the many misguided pro Palestinian youth I have recommitted myself to ensuring our younger generation is taught the facts about hatred and Antisemitism. I could only imagine the words my father would have for such ignorance. We are blessed
to have the Holocaust Documentation and Educational Center minutes away in Dania Beach.
Now that the survivors are passing away, we need to make sure their stories are remembered and told. The true stories and lessons surrounding how Nazis turned hatred of the Jew and other marginalized groups through propaganda and lies needs to be taught. It is the law in Florida that students are taught about the Holocaust. Since COVID-19 these efforts have been woefully short.
I am partnering with the center and retired teacher and friend Marilyn Santiago to make sure our students visit the center in the coming months. If you want to help us, please reach out to me for more information.
As Jews, we need to realize it does not matter if there are Republicans or Democrats in charge. We need all individuals to support the efforts against Antisemitism. We all dropped the ball when it came to our college campuses. Hate Speech is not Free Speech. It should be stopped, and every student should be able to feel safe at school.
I personally agree that all public funding should be cut off from these institutions that are spreading lies and misinformation. My friend and former Mayor of Philadelphia teaches a class at Columbia. He 100 percent confirmed that most of these individuals were not students and simple agitators showing up, camping out and starting problems.
The past week we have seen a world wind of change sweep across our coun-
try. It is a result of the election that was lost by the Democrats. Yes, it was close, but President Trump won. People are simply tired of the lack of common sense and failure of our institutions to uphold the law.
The days of everyone should get a second chance and it is ok to break the laws is over. The pendulum has swung all too far. If you are here illegally, it is illegal. If you are a criminal, you should be in jail. If you are here illegally and a criminal, you should be in jail and sent back. That is only common sense. Either way the commitment to crackdown on undocumented immigrants is sending a chilling effect throughout every city in our nation. The weekend of the inauguration was also the winter leadership meeting of the US Mayors. Our key issues are housing, Infrastructure and immigration. As an organization we are non-partisan so many Mayors share varying positions on immigration. It needs to be made extremely clear that the super majority of cities are not “so called” sanctuary cities. Hallandale Beach has never been a sanctuary city.
We swear to uphold the laws of our country, state and city. We have taken a strong position when it comes to law and order. If you break the law, you will be arrested. We make arrests but then criminals are booked into the Broward County system. The Broward County Sheriff’s
Department executed an agreement with ICE in 2019. The question becomes are the rules being followed. The MOU between ICE and BSO constitutes an agreement between ICE and delegates to BSO personnel the authority to perform certain immigration enforcement functions as specified herein.
The purpose of this collaboration is to promote public safety by facilitating the custodial transfer of specific aliens in BSO’s jail correctional facilities to ICE for removal purposes at the time of the alien’s scheduled release from criminal custody. I have set up a meeting with the Chief and City Manager to further educate myself on this extremely critical issue. Our main goal as a city is to keep our residents safe. As a smaller public safety organization, diluting our staffing levels for training and providing services not intended for local law enforcement could put our residents at risk. Our lane per say is fighting street crime, thefts, robbery, domestic violence and day to day policing. Obviously, if we catch an undocumented immigrant during an arrest they will go to jail and be reported to BSO. It is only the beginning. We will be keenly watching as rules and regulations are rolled out. We are also concerned about funding freezes and cuts to our Infrastructure programs. I will continue to keep our residents informed.
As always, I am available anytime for your questions, concerns, and ideas to make our City a better place on my Phone/Text at: (954) 632-5700. Or you can email me at: jcooper@cohb.org. Please visit me on my Facebook page at Mayor Joy Cooper. Like, follow, and share.

Do You Snore? Are You Always Tired?
Snoring Is No Laughing
Matter!
It may be more than just an annoying habit, it may be a sign of Sleep Apnea
What Exactly is Sleep Apnea?
When the muscles that control the upper airway relax, some people begin to snore. When the airway becomes completely blocked and the person temporarily stops breathing, this is an episode of “Obstructive Apnea.” Each Apnea event may last for a few seconds or up to a couple minutes or more. Events may happen frequently - even several hundred times a night.
Can This Condition Be Treated? How?
There are many effective treatments for snoring. A widely accepted treatment for Sleep Apnea is oral appliance therapy. An oral device custom fit by your dentist is designed to keep your airway open and help prevent Apneas.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine
Recommends an oral appliance as a first-line treatment option for patients with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and for those with severe OSA who either decline CPAP Therapy or are unable to successfully use CPAP Therapy. This treatment does not involve medications or surgery and helps hundreds of thousands of people all over the world enjoy sleeping safely for a healthier life. Many experience the benefits quickly - often during the first night of use.
