wes walsworth Born and raised here in the Wood River Valley, Wes Walsworth grew up in the construction business but found his calling while he was working at a vineyard in Australia. “I had known that I wanted to make furniture, and I’d played around with it in the past, but when I saw the wine barrels, I was inspired. The way the wine colors the wood, the shape, texture, and quality of the wood—all this makes it a fine wood to work.” A Fine Wood. Sun Valley Company recently hired Derek Gallegos, former owner/chef at 310 Main, to take over Gretchen’s, the resort’s one in-house restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year. It’s rare that you hear about locals heading out to Sun Valley for a meal, but we think that with a valley-wide favorite chef at the helm, locals may soon flock to see what’s cooking at Gretchen’s.

Derek Gallegos was born into the food business. He remembers making fresh flour tortillas with his grandmother Inez when he was just a boy while she “slathered them with butter, so much it would drip down your forearms, and served them with pinto beans straight from the cooking pot with their broth.” His first job was working next to his father in a diner in Pocatello. His family then opened the original Mama Inez restaurant in 1983, eventually moving it to Ketchum where it became a valley institution until it was sold to new owners in 2007. In 1993 Derek set his sights on improving the culinary options in Hailey. Partnering with Mark Fisher, his brother-in-law who owned the Ketchum Mama’s with Derek’s sister, Danette, he opened Sun Valley Brewery, a casual eatery with an eclectic menu and an excellent beer selection. Derek remained involved with the Brewery for 14 years. He and his wife Andrea opened 310 Main in 2007 “to bring to the valley beautiful and delicious

food inspired by the bounty of the Pacific Northwest.” 310 Main’s menu was also heavily influenced by their family trips to New York City and northern Italy’s EmiliaRomagna region—it was a menu buoyed by their passion for food. The atmosphere at 310 embodied their belief that good food ought to be enjoyed in a warm, welcoming, and stylish atmosphere. From 2007 to the end of 2011, locals loved the innovative and delicious creations served up by Chef Derek and were sorry to see 310 close. With such a storied culinary history and a loyal following among local foodies, Chef Derek is an inspired choice to reinvigorate a classic Sun Valley establishment. There’s a major remodel in the works, an update which will make Gretchen’s feel a bit more contemporary and refined. And while Derek is making minor changes to the regular menu, he looks to the specials as a way to make his mark on Gretchen’s. You can throw your scavenged root vegetables on the coals; you can roast a hunk of meat on a stick, no pots and pans needed, but you need something to cut with. SVPN: What would you choose as your last meal? DG: Several things. [1] The pork and New Mexico green chile stew my dad and grandparents made. My sisters and I still make it. It’s our ultimate comfort food. [2] The tortelli d’erbetti at La Greppia Ristorante in Parma, Italy. [3] The baked abalone with pimenton and cauliflower purée at Daniel in NYC, paired with a Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. I’d top it off with Époisses with a late-harvest Alsatian Gewürztraminer from Zind-Humbrecht, caramel pots du crème with Russian tea

DG: I am most excited about being part of a new team that believes in great food and service and having the opportunity to enhance the already excellent reputation of Sun Valley Resort.

Risotto 1 large leek, green part removed, cut in half lengthwise, washed well and sliced thinly 1 lb asparagus, tough ends broken off, stems peeled. Cut spears in half, reserve tips. slice stems 1/8 inch thick pieces. 1/4 cup toasted pinenuts 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1 tbsp butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 cup Arborio rice 1 quart rich vegetable stock 1/2 cup dry white wine Put leeks, sliced asparagus stems, butter and olive in heavy-bottomed saucepan and stir over medium heat until leek is soft. Add rice and stir for 2 minutes, add wine and cook for 1 minute. Turn heat to low and then add stock (1/2 cup at a time every 3-5 minutes), stirring well after each addition. This should take 20-25 minutes. Rice should have a slight resistance in center when done. Finish by stirring in cheese and pinenuts and salt to taste. Lamb Jus 2 cups off-dry riesling wine (like Columbia Crest “Two Vines”) 1/4 cup meat glace (heavily reduced beef or veal stock) 1 tsp sherry vinegar 1 tsp honey 2 tbsp finely sliced fresh mint 2 tbsp cold butter, diced 1 dash Tabasco Put wine, glace, vinegar, and honey in thickbottomed sauté pan and reduce to about 1/2 cup or almost syrupy. Off heat, whisk in butter and mint, add Tabasco and salt to taste. Grill 4 to 5-ounce domestic lamb chops, place them over reserved, steamed asparagus tips, serve mint jus over them, and place a generous portion of risotto to the side.

Indoor pools so inviting, who wouldn’t want to take a swim?

An indoor swimming pool may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an Idaho mountain home. There are, however, a surprising number of residences in the Wood River Valley with pools under their roofs. And while convenience may be the obvious virtue for an avid swimmer, home pool areas can become much more than a place for exercise. With elegant and thoughtful design, an indoor pool space can offer an oasis of sorts—a warm and serene escape that feels quite removed from the main home but is only steps away.

The McGowan Home Like the Puchners, convenience was a consideration when Rob McGowan and his wife designed their home in Golden Eagle II with architect Jeff Williams. Rob explains that because his wife is an avid swimmer, they chose to include an indoor regulation lap pool in their plans. The McGowan’s pool area is flooded with natural light—the result of a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors, as well as additional windows. The large sliding glass doors open to a south-facing courtyard so that the pool blends seamlessly with the outdoor living space in warmer months. Such design gives indoor pools the best of all seasons—warmth and sunlight for the colder months and an outdoor feel for warmer months. A particular concern for the McGowans was that they not be aware of the saltwater pool in the home’s main living area. To make this possible, the pool occupies a separate wing, and effec46

tive ventilation and humidity control keep the pool’s presence confined to its dedicated space. In addition to the practical and aesthetic aspects of planning their pool area, the McGowans had significant safety concerns. Because they have young children, the pool needed to be securely closed off from the main house. So there is only one access door from the house to the pool, which can only be opened with a code. And the keypad has been placed high enough up the wall to be out of a child’s reach. Life Poolside In the indoor pool areas of both the Puchner and McGowan homes, it can almost seem like swimming is a secondary use of these spaces. They are each elegant and serene in their own right and worthy of a visit for any purpose. On the other hand, such settings would likely make a swimmer out of even the most dedicated landlubber.

The Puchner Home When Ann and Phil Puchner built their home in its remote setting on Glendale Road (south of Bellevue), convenience was a natural consideration behind adding an indoor pool to the design. Ann explains that when the Dale Bates-designed home was built in 1991, accessibility to her meant not only avoiding a commute elsewhere to swim but also making a dip in the pool a possibility at any time, even just before bed. Because the Puchners access their pool through the master bath, the pool is incorporated into the main home discreetly. The pool is only visible from a window and the door at its entry so it offers a private retreat and is a bonus feature that does not dominate the home. With a southwest exposure as well as floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors, the Puchner’s pool area remains bright and warm, even during winter months, and gives way to sweeping views of the south valley foothills. And more than a just a place to swim, the Puchners also use the space as an exercise area. The pool space also opens up to a patio and hot tub, so while it’s indoors, the pool is also easily incorporated into the home’s outdoor living space.

the saltwater option The Wood River YMCA recently converted its lap pool and spa to saltwater from a traditional system. The change to saltwater was driven by demand from the membership, according to Tim Carter, co-owner (with partner Joe Marx) of Idaho Mountain Builders, the firm that did the conversion. The benefits of a saltwater versus chlorine pool, says Tim, include reduced operating costs and a reduced chlorine

smell. In addition, “The water has a softer feel, and it’s easier on the skin,” Tim says. These attributes are the result of more effective regulation of chloramine, or combined chlorine—the chemical that keeps a pool clean but also causes its chlorine smell and can irritate the skin. A saltwater system works by running the pool’s water through a cell that breaks down salt to chlorine. Because saltwater is more corrosive than traditional pool water, it’s important that the metal in the pool’s equipment is able to withstand saltwater exposure. “The major challenge at the Y was making sure that the existing equipment was compatible with a saltwater system,” Tim explains. Fortunately, it was, but pool owners should know that not all pool equipment will be compatible with a saltwater system.

Over two decades later, what started as a grass-roots business is now an international design force, a force still run by the family and others who have been with them nearly since the inception of the company. Mark and Patsy still own the company and they are joined at the helm by their son, Christian. The company employs about 120 people, making it one of the valley’s largest employers. Matt Ostmann, whose card reads “Vice President of Technical Development,” says that at RMH job titles don’t mean as much as they might in many other companies. “I wear a bunch of hats, just as many people around here do. We all pitch in where we see a need.” In April, Matt celebrates his 19th year with the company. Before signing on with Mark and Patsy, Matt and a business partner owned a high-end finishing

company; in that capacity he had worked closely with the Nickums and their previous distribution company. Describing how he came to work for RMH, Matt says that after his partner decided to move to Boise and after Matt had paid the final bill for that company, “Mark walked in the door to ask what I was doing next. Then he asked if I wanted to join his new venture. A year later we started making hardware. We started with one plate and one lever. From there, we just kept responding to what people wanted.” And the better part of two decades later, Matt is happy about that turn of events. He says, “flexibility has been a key to the success at Rocky Mountain Hardware.” It’s ingrained in their corporate DNA, really. RMH’s origin story is about flexibility. The beginning was very much about responding

to each new project, finding a way to give each client what he wanted. As a new business in the high-end hardware and finishes market, RMH was able to be more flexible than companies who were well established. Matt notes that their biggest challenge, “jumping in head first at the top of the market,” was also their biggest strength. “Because we were servicing the top-end of the market, we could make products for clients’ particular needs on a custom project basis.” This mentality, a mindset built around the idea of custom design and top-notch service, has stuck. And according to Matt, not much has changed since the early days—besides the quantity of orders being filled every day and the number of employees it takes to make it all happen! And even though RMH is now one of the leaders in the high-end hardware

market, their practices and products haven’t ossified—rather, they are still as flexible as they were in the beginning. According to Annette Goicoechea, Chief Financial Officer at RMH, “The focus on the unleashing of new products and new designs is relentless.” It is this atmosphere of creativity and productivity that fuels the team at RMH. She thinks that the involvement of the Nickum family, from “Patsy’s good eye for great design, new creations, and selfexpression to Mark’s and Christian’s focus on functionality and custom engineering with the latest and greatest in robotic machining” are keys to the success at RMH. The “leadership,” she says, “is smart. The Nickums keep their team educated and focused.” This smart leadership has helped the company not only weather the tough

economic times of late, but, as Annette says, “RMH has made it through the worst economic slump in its history without skipping a beat.” She credits the Nickums with establishing an atmosphere where the team stayed calm, focused, and committed to doing what RMH does best—designing and manufacturing the highest quality products and delivering, time after time, unparalleled customer service. Annette lets us in on a secret about RMH, “The company focus has always been, if you aren’t the lead dog, the scenery never changes.” Not only is this “lead dog” dedicated to great design, quality manufacturing, and more-than-satisfactory customer service, the Nickums and their team at RMH have 52

established a “green” ethos which runs through the veins in their LEED® gold-certified building (the first in Blaine County), a building that Annette says, “offers absolutely the finest working environment I have ever known.” When you pull up to the building, the prime parking spaces are reserved not for the CEO and the CFO or for Nickum family members, rather, the best spaces are reserved for “fuel-efficient cars.” In addition, Rocky Mountain Hardware products contain a minimum of 90% post-consumer recycled content. RMH’s dedication to sustainable business practices includes their commitment to staying local; it’s an all-ldaho business with the foundry in Blackfoot, the machine

shop in Shoshone, and the finishing plant in Hailey (sidenote: the finishing plant also houses a basketball court for lunchtime or post-work shoot-arounds). What started as an effort to fill a need in the high-end market has actually begun to help define that high-end market. RMH hardware is in demand and that demand is ever growing. What started as a “rustic” hardware aesthetic, according to Christian Nickum, has grown to include a wide range of contemporary stylings as well. And what began as a mountaintown market has expanded to include the international market. The story of Rocky Mountain Hardware is certainly the story of homegrown success.

SVPN: What brought you to Sun Valley? MO: I moved here in 1978 to ski. Initially, I tried to move to Aspen but it was impossible to find a decent place to live. My buddy who was moving West with me with had a ski magazine in his truck with an article about Sun Valley, so we hit the road. For $450 a month, we rented a brand new house in Deer Creek. For the same money in Aspen, we could have lived in a trailer in Basalt with a door that barely stayed on its hinges. It was a no-brainer. SVPN: What is your Sun Valley Area highlight? MO: It was skiing that brought me here, but I think I have loved living here for so long because I can park my truck for the day with my dog in it, leave all the windows down so that he can be comfortable, and I don’t have worry about a thing. SVPN: What books are you currently reading? MO: The Brothers K by David James Duncan and Tortilla Flat, a book I’ve read many times before, by Steinbeck.

Enter the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, ubiquitous with its orange ring. We read the program offerings, sign field trip permission slips, sip their wine at Gallery Walks. We rock out to big-name entertainment under our dark skies. But did you know just how significantly The Center enhances the lives of children in our valley? That their Educators’ Advisory Committee actually helps to plan performances, lectures, and exhibitions in response to school curricula? Meet Courtney Gilbert, Curator of Visual Arts, and Britt Udesen, Director of Education and Humanities, creators of the “Creatures: From Bigfoot to the Yeti Crab” exhibition

Crayoned thank-you notes along the classroom walls include: “Dear Mr. Smith, I hope my novel is as good as yours someday,” and “I  Big Foot.” “The art complements all components,” says Don Haisley, principal of Hemingway Elementary School. “I believe in educating the whole child. The more exposure our students have to arts the better adults we can make them.” Because The Center is within walking distance to the school, Hemingway students have abundant opportunities to visit. “The only way we can teach creativity is through the arts. It’s hard to teach

Yet, it’s the intangible ways that the Sun Valley Center for the Arts inspires children, offering tools to experience and understand the world beyond our mountain enclave. The Center certainly has a history of “provoking and stimulating the imagination and opening hearts and minds” as its mission states, and The Center begins fulfilling that mission with the young students among us, cultivating the sorts of life-long learners whom you see filling the seats at The Center’s annual lecture series that brings in big names like Sir Salman Rushdie, Garrison Keillor, and David Sedaris. it through mathematics and history. Other countries envy our creativity, our entrepreneurial spirit,” Haisley says. The talent behind the Sun Valley Center for the Arts is considerable, from staff to board members, from volunteers to local teachers. For this story I met with Britt, Courtney, Sarah Kolash, Program Coordinator, and Christl Holzl, Wine Auction and Special Events Coordinator. We talked in the classroom where last fall, as a field trip volunteer, I turned slippery clay, embedded with riparian seeds from the bottom of the Big Wood River, into a fish. My daughter and I added our creations to a school of clay shapes swimming along the craft table flanked by kindergarteners carefully scraping gills, shaping fins. The children willingly left their sculptures, having been invited to place them back into the river the following weekend. You get the connection: a full cycle of earth to functional form and back to the river again. Replenishing. Conservation meets art project. Approximately 50 community members came out to release those fish.

Over the past decade, the auction weekend has consistently raised over $1,000,000 each year for The Center. The “Raise the Paddle” lot alone raises approximately $200,000 per year solely for scholarships and educational programs. This year’s projection: proceeds will raise approximately 35 to 55 percent of all The Center’s operating costs. “The Wine Auction is the vehicle that helps us meet our mission,” says Christl. Britt says, “I am most proud of helping students to learn to look closely, ask good questions, and feel comfortable in a museum setting. Whether they are preschoolers or college students, we are working with art-savvy viewers. Her Inspiration: As a child Barrett took classes at The Center with a local artist and gallery owner. “The classes really inspired me, and I started to define myself as an artist.” A Turning Point: “My sophomore year I went to our guidance counselor, Bob Brock, worried because I didn’t know what direction I was going or what I wanted to do. Knowing my interest in art, he suggested I apply for a Center scholarship.” Barrett was awarded a scholarship for an intensive two-week art experience at Savannah College of Art and Design. “After that, I knew this was the field I wanted to follow.” Barrett’s experience afforded her an internship with Sun Valley Magazine the following summer. Sealing the Deal: Winning The Center’s Ezra Pound Scholarship of $5,000, Barrett headed off for a month at Ringling College of Art and Design. “That was the most life-changing experience ever. While I was there, I received an academic excellence award from the teachers that only 10 other kids got.” The Future: This fall Barrett will attend Ringling College to study Motion Design, a combination of digital animation and graphic design and film.

Katherine has been in the real estate field for 12 years and has lived in the Sun Valley area for the better part of 20 years. She is married to the local and very accomplished architect, Buffalo Rixon (Ruscitto, Latham, Blanton), and has two elementary-aged children. Actively involved in the local community, Katherine serves on the board of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts as well as SVPN’s board and is the president of The Center’s Junior Patrons Circle and a strong and loyal supporter of Camp Rainbow Gold. Katherine and her real estate partner, Rob Cronin, always choose a cause each year to which they donate 5% of their proceeds. You can still make an offer contingent upon an inspection and financing so rest assured, your earnest money is protected if you later find the roof is about to fall in or you can’t get the interest rate you were looking for. If there are multiple offers, the bank will generally ask all buyers to come back at their “Highest and Best” offer. You can either stick with your original offer or increase it. You are most likely to get the best price if you can make a cash offer, but banks do understand that most buyers will need a financing contingency. Property owners who are thinking of selling this summer should know that there is a faint light at the end of the tunnel we’ve been in. While I don’t expect prices to rise much this summer, we at least expect to see a stabilization of the market. My best advice if you would like to sell in a timely fashion is to look carefully at the comparative sales in your neighborhood. Price your home aggressively enough that it becomes one of the top three ‘best values’ in your neighborhood. The busy summer season is relatively short, so if after listing your home, you don’t see showings within the first two weeks, re-evaluate your price and consider lowering it. Remember that bank-owned shadow inventory is still going to be affecting values until it is gone.

According to local real estate appraiser, Patti Lentz, “For the year-to-date last year, we had only 11 ‘market’ sales (meaning properties that were not short sales or foreclosures) that sold for a total of $5 million. So far this year, we have had 28 market sales for a total of $21 million, an increase of over 300% in terms of dollar volume and 155% in terms of the number of sales! If market and non-market sales were combined (these include REOs, short sales, etc), last year we had 35 sales for a total of $17.5 million and this year we have had 71 sales for a total of $28 million. Again, significant increases in the number of sales as well as dollar volume. Our inventory is down as well. At this time last year, there were 1,475 active listings and presently we have 1,320 active listings, a decrease of over 10%.”
