KETCHUM COMPREHENSIVE PLAN MEETING Discussion of Ketchum’s Future Draws a Crowd A meeting at River Run Lodge on October 26 to discuss an update of Ketchum’s comprehensive plan attracted about 200 attendees, proving that locals are eager to have a say in their town’s future. Issues that the crowd of primarily full-time residents weighed in on included how to attract and retain young people and families, economic and employment opportunities, environmental and transportation concerns, affordable housing, and more. For more information on Ketchum’s comprehensive plan and to follow the updating process, visit www.ketchumidaho.org.

NEW OWNERSHIP FOR A VALLEY FAVORITE Award-winning Sun Valley Mustard has been acquired by local entrenprenuer Joshua Wells and partners. Started in 1984 by Lois Allison, the spread is already beloved for its distintive flavors and local roots, and Josh looks forward to making the brand more widely recognized for its considerable acclaim among gourmet circles (including awards at the Napa Valley World Wide Mustard Competition). Joshua also plans to continue handcrafting the spread and use the brand’s long-standing great reputation to grow the business outside of the Wood River Valley. Joshua, who also owns and operates Alpinfoto Photography, says that in addition to food-industry honors, local affection for Sun Valley Mustard attracted him to the company. “Mention Sun Valley Mustard to a local and you’ll see a twinkle in their eyes,” he says. “Everyone loves it.” Sun Valley Mustard (www.sunvalleymustard.com) is available at local retail outlets and is served in restaurants throughout the valley.

architectural trends

BY MELANIE CRANDALL

There are few symbols of the American West that capture the imagination like the log cabin. The structure harkens back to the rugged pioneer days, representing closeness to the land and unbridled freedom. What’s remarkable now is how the log home has taken on new life and many incarnations. Historic log structures, often very thoughtfully restored with their small bedrooms and hand-hewn pegs, stand near new modern log homes, designed completely to owners specifications, which house contemporary art collections, home theaters, and are stocked with every luxury. Aren’t we lucky that both ends of the spectrum—and everything in between—coexist harmoniously in the Wood River Valley?

ABOVE: What could be cozier than an historic log cabin tucked away in the trees in the midst of a blanket of white?

26

sun valley property news

Log timbers themselves, massive and imposing, stand for what it took to endure harsh conditions in the far north and northwest regions of the United States. While the log cabin tradition began in Northern Europe in the late seventeenth century, the structure has become as American as apple pie. In this area, we seem to have more than our rightful share of spectacular log homes. We’ve found two that are indicative of the era in which they were built and represent different intentions, styles, and needs. Each is a treasure in its own right.

The ultimate luxury in ski access is true on-mountain living, where you literally ski from your door to the chairlift. At properties that border Dollar Mountain, your ski day begins when you step out your door.

“From our Snow Creek [condominium] we can ski to the lifts—right out the back door!” says part-time resident Chris Swim. Ski access was a big consideration for him and his family when they chose their Sun Valley home. “It was very important to be right on the hill,” Chris explains, “We wanted to be able to head out the backdoor and ski, sled, and hike.” For the Swim family, slopeside living has more than met their expectations. When asked what a ski season in the Snow Creek neighborhood is like, Chris responds, “Would winter wonderland be too much?” Not at all—with so much snowy fun out the backdoor, we think “wonderland” is just right.

in the mountains BY KITT DOUCETTE

My love affair with skiing in Sun Valley began when I was six years old. Following the advice of a friend, my family came to Sun Valley from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on a whimsical spring vacation. The first thing my parents did upon arrival was to drop my brother Cody and me off at Dollar Mountain for a ski lesson. Dollar—now home to a world-class terrain park, a ski-cross course, and one of the best ski school programs in the world—was still very much the runt of the Sun Valley family at that time, with a tiny cabin for a base lodge and four slow double lifts. To a little whippersnapper from Wisconsin, however, fresh off the slopes—or rather single slope of the landfill where I learned to ski outside of Milwaukee—Dollar Mountain was a huge massif full of adventure, begging to be conquered. I went straight to the top. I still can’t ride to the top of Dollar and look down Old Bowl— which hasn’t changed at all, by the way—without chuckling while thinking about my very first run down it 24 years ago.

OPPOSITE: Backcountry skiing is a dream come true in the Sun Valley area. ABOVE: Our own Conor Davis catches big air on Baldy. sun valley property news

dad and Cody somehow ended up in the big, steep bumps of International. My brother hitched a ride on the toboggan of a friendly ski patroller while my dad—at this point an enthusiastic beginning-tointermediate skier at best—cartwheeled his way down the mountain. Eventually, we all reconvened in the hotel’s hot tub and laughed ourselves to tears as my dad recounted each one of his two dozen wipe-outs and how the ski patroller and Cody just sat there laughing at him. Remembering how my dad handled his humiliation in the powder with such grace and humor reminds me to check my ego at the door whenever I get in a bit over my head. In one of the great miracles of my young life, that first trip turned into an annual tradition, which somehow led to the Doucette family moving to Idaho four years later. Exploring the mountains and skiing quickly replaced all other winter activities as Cody and I fell in love with skiing and ski racing, finding it hard to believe that schools in the valley let us out at 1:30 p.m. during the winter months

so we could hit the mountain with our friends. That one still gets me fired up, and I can’t help smiling when a school bus rolls up in front of Apple’s and disgorges a hoard of screaming and giggling grommets as excited as I was to be out of school and going skiing together. Like any great relationship, skiing in Sun Valley continues to unfold itself for me like a beautifully complex piece of origami. In my 25 years of devotion to the mountain, Baldy has never let me down. It spoils me daily with its immaculate grooming and perfect corduroy, offering countless high-speed runs down the two-mile, 3,000 vertical-foot magic carpet ride called Warm Springs. A coffee break in Seattle Ridge Lodge never gets old, while secret glades and powder stashes inside and outside of Baldy’s ropes always surprise me with their abundance. One particular St. Patrick’s Day, I lucked upon a real-life four-leaf clover and got to fly with the Sun Valley Heli-Ski guides. Getting dropped off on the top of Baldy after five hours of perfect corn skiing in the backcountry sporting a big shit-eating

Completely out of control, with no helmet and no poles, I raced my twin brother in a flying wedge, that offered very little in the way of direction or speed control, while the poor instructor screamed, “Slow down!” as he chased after us. I remember laughing loudly, having the time of my life, until I was about halfway down Old Bowl and realized that—unlike the landfill, which ended almost as soon as it began—I was still gaining speed; in fact I was going faster than I had ever gone before, and I didn’t have any idea how to slow down. Needless to say, that first run ended badly—in what the instructor informed me, as he shook his head and took his turn laughing, was called an “epic garage sale.” Even my gloves fell off. That trip down Dollar was the first time Idaho’s mountains taught me a powerful lesson in humility and respect, but it certainly wasn’t the last. On another family trip, the first time my brother and I skied Baldy during a snowstorm, a thick layer of fog moved in and my parents got separated, one with each of us. My mom and I inched our way down Warm Springs through the deep snow while my

grin on your face is certainly one of the coolest things you can do anywhere. And to top all that off, if you really want to go for it, you can paraglide from the top of Baldy with Sun Valley Paragliding. Now that would be a day to remember. While I have long been a Bald Mountain and chair-lift access devotee, I eventually found my way into the backcountry, exploring surrounding mountains like the Sawtooths and skiing powder and couloirs that rival the best and most intense terrain in the world. The most incredible part of skiing in the mountains surrounding Sun Valley is the number of mountain yurts that offer amenities like wood-fired hot tubs, saunas, and a warm and cozy place to come back to after a memorable day of skiing, drink a beer, and marvel at the miracle of moonlight in the mountains. So if you’re like me and you believe that Sun Valley is a truly special place, there can be no denying that the surrounding mountains are a big source of that magic. Four mountain ranges—the Sawtooths, Pioneers, Boulders, and Smoky Mountains—converge on this tiny valley and remind all of us who call

this place home just how lucky we are. For me there is simply no better way to experience the energy of those mountains and feel their majesty then by strapping on a pair of boards to my feet and dancing down the slopes in the crisp, dry air of a sparkling winter morning as the sun rises over the Pioneers.

Maybe that sounds a bit cheesy, but when you love someone or something, a little bit of sappiness and old-fashioned cheese is hard to avoid; so forgive me because I love these mountains, and I love skiing in them. See you up there!

muffy ritz

If you’ve lived in the valley for a winter, you are sure to have heard of Muffy Ritz, the area’s Nordic skiing queen bee. Muffy has skied competitively since 1978, skiing for the University of Colorado, the US Ski Team, and the Rossignol Nordic Team. In 1996 a friend approached Muffy about private Nordic lessons for the winter season. That series of private lessons turned into lessons for a small group of friends, and VAMPs was born. Fifteen years later women in the Sun Valley area sign up in droves to be a part of VAMPs, a Nordic ski program for women that’s coached by women. Muffy’s love of the sport, her funloving nature, and her understanding that women are social animals who are not only inspired by the sport but also by each other are the keys to the program. Because of the energy generated by the program, the VAMPs have become some of the valley’s best ambassadors for the sport of Nordic skiing. SVPN checks in with Muffy as the skiing season is about to take off. Here’s what she has to say:

62

Q: Do you remember the first time you went Nordic skiing?

Q: Most universally hated VAMPs training ritual?

A: I do remember the first day I skied as a rookie for the University of Colorado—I didn’t have a clue! My boyfriend taught me the basics of classic skiing, made me follow him for a while, then set me loose on my own for two and a half hours. I skied 30 kilometers that day, and I was so whipped that I fell asleep the minute I got in the car for the two-hour drive home, but I knew I had fallen in love with the sport!

A: Beach Hill! It’s a love/hate relationship with this workout that involves hill walking, moosehoofs, and hill bounding for a continuous 45 minutes! The one they love the most is our annual Pumpkin Hunt!

Q: Best race of your life? A: Best race had to be the first time I won the Birkebeiner back in 1985. This was a 52-kilometer race. It was when classic skiing was switching over to

skating. I had dabbled in marathon skating but had never taken the kick wax off my skis and committed 100% to just skating to move forward. Just 10 minutes before the start of the race, I threw my klister into the woods, and dove into skating when the gun went off. I won the Birkebeiner by 18 seconds! I’ll never forget it. Q: Worse race of your life? A: My worst race was a US Ski Team World Cup tryout race. I was in position to make the team of five. Somehow I couldn’t ski that day. I fell at least five times— skied horribly. I placed second to last! I was devastated. The next day I was so mad that I skied my heart out in the second tryout race and won!

Q: Best advice a coach ever gave you? A: “Zero power!” When I was skiing in the Olympic Trials in Lake Placid in 1984, a coach (Dick Taylor) told me “zero power.” Huh? It meant to relax, take the tension out of your muscles, and let the movements flow. I found that I started skiing much faster, even during the race. I use that all the time when I ski now and when I coach the VAMPs. I tell the ladies the same thing— relax, don’t put so much effort into your upper body: zero power. Suddenly, they find it much easier to ski—almost effortless! Q: Favorite place to ski in the Sun Valley area? A: I love to skate at Lake Creek. It’s so challenging—technically and aerobically. For classic, I pick Prairie Creek. At Sun Valley Nordic Center, I love Diamondback; the views are amazing.

Jami and Mark Grassi’s Ketchum home situated just north of Chocolate Gulch is exactly what you might expect from people who build high-end custom homes for clients with discerning tastes—it’s stunning. But it’s also full of surprises; it’s the sort of house that unfolds for you the longer you’re there—a place where subtlety reigns—well that, and the views!

When Jami and Mark Grassi, decided to buy a second home in Ketchum, they thought they’d buy something in town for the sake of convenience. And because in his everyday life in Napa Valley, Mark, owner/ operator of Grassi and Associates Construction, spends his days tending to the ins and outs of high-end custom-home designs, the couple resisted the idea of building. Jami recalls, “I told Mark that our second home

should be about relaxing. Building is what he does, and I thought if we took on such a project, he would never relax.” But when they began looking seriously at real estate, they surprised themselves with a directional shift. After seeing the lot north of Ketchum and the panoramic views of the stunning Idaho landscape, they enlisted the help of a long-time colleague and friend, Mexican architect Juancarlos Fernandez, to help give sun valley property news

TOP TO BOTTOM: The cedar of the exterior and the weathered steel of the roof echo the rural setting while the use of concrete, glass, and clean lines elevate the design to the realm of the sophisticated; the loft above the kitchen serves as a yoga studio, and the dark ceiling adds to the warmth of the main living area. shape to their vision. For people who make a living helping others realize their dream homes, this was their chance to literally construct their own dreams. Standing alone just north of Chocolate Gulch, the Grassi home testifies to the wisdom of merging smart architectural design with a reverence for the natural surroundings. It also speaks to the benefits of teaming up with someone who knows you well. Juancarlos, well-known for his architectural contributions to Napa Valley, has worked with Mark on a number of projects in the 66

sun valley property news

Napa area including CADE Vineyard and a smattering of private homes. When Mark approached him about designing their Ketchum home, Juancarlos had just left his long-time employer Lail Design Group and was freelancing while he put together his own architectural firm. The Grassi home is the perfect calling card for Juancarlos’s versatility and vision. While each of Juancarlos’s projects is distinctive, there is a common vernacular in his Napa Valley designs because they make sense in the landscape they live in. Given that our Idaho landscape is different from Napa’s lush and rolling green hills, Juancarlos dealt with a different palette. As he familiarized himself with the landscape and the architecture of Sun Valley, he knew that he “wanted to do something unconventional for the area.” Unconventional, yes, he achieved that, but he also managed to pay homage to the landscape and the rural heritage here. When you drive north from Ketchum and pass Chocolate Gulch, it’s hard to resist the urge to turn into the driveway and knock on the door to see what’s going on behind those tall, dramatic cedar walls. The drama stems from the convergence of two worlds: the cedar and the weathered steel roof of the exterior hint at the barns dotting the landscape

of south-central Idaho, while the simple sophistication of the design suggests a different time and place altogether. The two buildings, a guesthouse/garage and main house, are connected by concrete patios hemmed in by steel rails. The main house is punctuated by walls of glass on the west-, north-, and east-facing aspects. The master suite sits on the upper level on the southern side of the house and boasts its own window onto the world. The cedar offers an innate verticality to the house that gives you the sense it is reaching skyward. It’s a phenomenal effect, this grounding a building so thoroughly in the place but leaving room for that building to reach beyond it. Knowing Jami and Mark as well as he does, Juancarlos knew that he had the good luck of having clients who understand architecture and would “have the patience to try to understand” his design. Speaking to Jami and Mark about their home, I ask them what their favorite detail about the house is. Mark laughs and sheepishly admits that it’s the steam shower in the master bathroom. Knowing that they spend as much time as possible Nordic skiing out their front door, his response was understandable even though a bit surprising considering the magnificent architectural details that abound. Upon further reflection, Mark shares a

svpn feature

story of an experience they had in the late summer. Lying in bed with the expansive window open to the south valley, they watched a early evening storm roll in. Mark admitted to being awe-struck by the storm as well as the way the house invites the natural world in. Mark continues to say that, “there’s a subtlety to the house” that allows them to discover new reasons to love it the longer they live there. Jami’s favorite aspect about the house is that it doesn’t overwhelm the natural environment, rather it, “integrates and meshes with the beauty around it.” They wanted a house that seamlessly transitions from the outside world to the inside world—a house that doesn’t seal them off from the nature they had come here to live in. The liberal use of glass contributes to that effect but so does the thoughtful and consistent use of, as Juancarlos says, “functional, durable, and appealing materials” throughout the property, like concrete for the patios as well as the floors and countertops. Moving from outside to inside the house, you sense a continuity. The architectural language that gives meaning to the exterior also informs the interior, and the result is a clean, authentic experience. The home offers some insight into the couple that lives there. Mark shies away from the word “spectacular” to describe the house. He resists anything that is “over the top,” and Jami, although a bit more inclined to use the

word “spectacular,” shares this humility. When Jami speaks of the home as spectacular, it’s not in a self-congratulatory way— no, it’s with a sense of awe for the way the house seems to be in its element. It’s a house that frames their appreciation for the things about the valley that drew them there in the first place. Juancarlos admits to being “surprised” by people’s responses to the house. When I ask if he was surprised if people “liked” the house, he says, “It’s not my concern whether or not people like the house. I’m curious about whether or not people ‘get’ what I’m trying to do. But my main concern is always the client.” He laughs knowing that his response is only going to elicit another question from me, a question I’m embarrassed to ask but that I can’t resist—a question that sounds something like, “Do you want to tell us what it is that you were trying to do?” Juancarlos responds, “There’s a word in Spanish that

means something between simple and basic, but I can’t think how to say it in English. I’m not trying to work in a particular style of architecture. I aim for something that is basic and has a function.” Knowing that it must be frustrating or tedious for an artist to explain his work, I let him off the hook. Truth is, I’d rather read it for myself anyway. When I stand in the Grassi home, taking in the stunning late autumn views, I understand that a reverence for function gave meaning to the form. I see that the design mirrors the way of the natural world—there’s nothing extraneous, nothing superfluous. But I also know that a prioritizing of function doesn’t mean that the home is sparse and utilitarian in its simplicity. No, all you have to do is pick any one of the amazing views that Juancarlos’s design frames and you can see that a respect for function is anything but sparse. The nearby hills are dotted with a late autumn flurry of color, and the mountains further north remind me of the intricate connection between form and function. Overall, it’s clear that the home is of the elements and in its element.

the pro’s picks Mark is no rookie when it comes to building. He’s the founder of Grassi and Associates, an award-winning construction firm that has been building residences, wineries, and estates in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys for more than 20 years. When it comes to building his own dream home, here are his picks. ARCHITECTURE Juancarlos Fernandez | Signum Architecture | Napa Valley, California 1104 Adams Street, Suite 2038 | St. Helena, California | 707.963.8831 info@signumarchitecture.com | www.signumarchitecture.com When Jami and Mark decided to build a home north of Ketchum, they had one architect in mind to help them design their dream home—their good friend, Juancarlos Fernandez. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Juancarlos worked at Lail Design Group for eight years before opening Signum Architects with Jarrod Denton in May of 2011. He lists the likes of Herzog, De Meuron, and Kundig as influences. But since his designs are meant to be lived in, it makes sense that he also includes “life” as a major influence. If you like what you see and you’re looking to build, call him up—you won’t be disappointed. CONSTRUCTION Brian Burrell | Class 5 Enterprises Inc. | Hailey, Idaho P.O. Box 3552 | Hailey, Idaho 83353 | Phone: 208.788.6344 Although Mark acted as general contractor for their Idaho home, to oversee day-to-day operations on the jobsite, Jami and Mark hired Brian Burrell from Class 5 Enterprises. Brian and his crew also handled all the carpentry for the guesthouse and main house. Mark had nothing but praise for Brian saying, “He was invaluable to me through the course of the construction.” High praise from a man who runs such a successful company of his own.

feast festive

Jamie and Mark Grassi graciously opened their home to SVPN and friends for a holiday feast catered by Cristina Ceccatelli Cook, owner and visionary behind Cristina’s Restaurant in Ketchum. Serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal, Cristina took American favorites and made them her own for an unforgettable experience. The setting was stunning, the food and wine were fabulous, and the conversation engaging—the perfect festive feast to inaugurate the holiday season.

Cristina, working her magic, whipping up an unforgettable meal.

sun valley property news

Cristina is a legend in the Sun Valley area where she only needs one name—our foodie version of Madonna or Cher. She’s been in the restaurant business for over 20 years and is as involved today with the day-today operations of her valley-wide favorite restaurant as she was when she was the only cook in the kitchen. Yes that’s right, “cook” is the way Cristina refers to herself (and it’s not just because her married last name is actually Cook)—she refuses the moniker “chef ” because, as she says, “[I] have no formal training, no education in cooking. Just experience.” Italian through and through, Cristina espouses an Italian’s attitude about food—for her, food is about pleasure and ritual. Her restaurant’s success is due to many factors, and the caliber of the food is certainly one of them. But the warmth with which Cristina receives everyone who walks through the door, and the inviting ambiance of her small restaurant certainly keep people coming back. In the summer, there’s an expansive patio and in the winter there’s a flickering fire.

As I sit with Cristina discussing her history and her career, she greets everyone who walks through the door, friend or stranger, with a gracious smile; it’s evident that she’s pleased to share her passion for food and the ritual of the meal with anyone willing to take the time—a fact that makes Cristina the perfect person to cater a holiday feast. Cristina notes, “The holidays are a time to gather with family and friends, linger over a meal, and drink memorable wine.” The event at the Grassi home fit the bill perfectly. Friends gathered to talk about the year’s adventures and share their excitement about adventures to come. They gathered to remember all the reasons to be thankful, and it was certainly mentioned a dozen times or so that people were thankful for Cristina’s cooking! Honoring the Italian at the helm of the meal, the evening was not rushed; people enjoyed a luxuriously long cocktail “hour” complemented by a sumptuous selection of cheeses and some of Cristina’s famous flatbread crackers. Comforted by the smell of a

turkey roasting and stuffing as good as you’ve ever dreamed of cooking in the open kitchen, guests roamed the expanse of the living/ dining area and marvelled at the views. In between bites of salmon appetizers and sips of Grassi Cabernet Sauvignon, guests shared their love of the lingering fall and the excitement for the upcoming winter season. The main course did not disappoint; rather, it elevated everyone’s expectations for all Thanksgiving meals to come. All the usual suspects were there: turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes complete with the mini marshmallows that we all secretly love at least once a year, and stuffing. Cristina, in a bold move, also sautéed and served up Brussels sprouts, a vegetable that gets little play in most American kitchens. Needless to say, they were a hit. Cristina is the kind of cook that you don’t argue with. If she says something will be good, you try it—and you won’t be sorry. It was the sort of evening that’s dangerous because evenings to come might fail to compare.

Gathering around a beautifully appointed table with great friends is an annual holiday favorite. sun valley property news

the team Cristina credits much of her success to her “team” at the restaurant. Patrick Jam and Raylene Ward have been a staples in her kitchen for 17 and 13 years respectively, and having long ago learned her ways, Patrick and Raylene are invaluable members of that team. Diane Hull is the woman behind the breads that are valley-wide favorites. And front staff manager Magaly Estrada makes sure that everyone who dines at Cristina’s feels welcome and wants to come back. Being a part of Cristina’s team is more than knowing her recipes—it’s about embracing her attitudes about food and meals. Cristina describes her kitchen as a throwback to days gone by. “I don’t have any gadgets—there’s nothing fancy in there—just an old-fashioned stove, pots and pans, and knives.” But this team doesn’t need a state-of-the-art kitchen; they just need fresh, seasonal food, inventiveness, and a belief in the meal as ritual.

style holiday spirits GRASSI WINE The perfect drink to help you welcome the holiday season is a Grassi wine. Mark and Jami own a vineyard in the Atlas Peak region in Napa Valley, and since 2003 they have been producing a delightful Cabernet Sauvignon. The Grassi Vineyard, a small operation that embraces sustainable farming practices and careful attention to detail, believes in quality over quantity. Visit www.grassiwines.com for more details.

RIVERA WINE We can’t help ourselves—we were seduced by Rivera wines when we covered Marilyn and Steve Rivera and their philanthropic causes for our August issue. It’s not just great food and wine that gets you in the holiday spirit, it’s also the decor. Ketchum’s own Taylor’d Events and Bellissimo teamed up to style the evening. Taylor Sturges, owner of Taylor’d Events says, “With such an elegant house with clean and modern lines, we didn’t want to overwhelm that with traditional holiday decorations. Instead, we wanted to blend the modern with the traditional. For flowers we used cream roses in a tight mount; instead of a plain glass vase, we used cranberries to give a pop of red on the table. And to bring in a touch of the traditional, we used clear antelope horns and plaid napkins on the table and garlands on the mantel with red and gold bows, pinecones, and red glass balls. On the stairwell, instead of traditional garlands, we put simple votives running up the stairs.” Elegant and festive, the decorations hit the mark. The types of horse ranches in the area run the gamut from small operations to grand facilities in the business of training champions. Dennis Higman, longtime fan of the horse ranch, walks you through the the caliber of optoins in the Sun Valley area. If you’re a horse aficionado, you’re sure to find a ranch that suits your needs. Spanish conquistadors may have left their horses behind in the West, but the fossilized remains of the first horses in the world, the Eocene horse, three hands high and 40 million years old, were found in the Chalk Hills of Wyoming. And while nobody knows for sure what happened to those little four-footed animals, we know what happened to the bigger, abandoned Spanish versions: they transformed the lifestyle of the Plains Indians, mounted the US Army, worked farms and ranches, and became the primary means of transportation until the automobile came along. Interestingly, the first breeders of these horses in the West were not Europeans or Easterners but Native Americans living right here in Idaho. The Nez Perce Indians, according to Lewis and Clark, owned thousands of “these lofty, elegantly formed, sinewy, surefooted, durable chargers fit to mount a prince.” The descendants of those horses are known today as Appaloosas. On the smaller but elegant Cloverly Ranch just north of Hailey, John Chapman, a retired attorney from one of Idaho’s pioneer families, has raised and trained registered Arabians for many years. One of his horses, ENZO, now a famous sire, won a string of honors including National Champion Colt and, more recently, World Cup Reserve Champion Senior Stallion. On a slightly larger scale, Robert Bouttier, “Archie” to his friends and neighbors, has been breeding Polish Arabians on his Drinkers of the Wind ranch in Bellevue since the 1970s, where he currently has 60 horses. His athletic, steady Arabians, whose legendary ancestors chased Napoleon back to Paris, are used for pleasure riding and track and endurance racing. One of his horses, French Kiss, was Colorado Race Horse of the Year. Another, Zabkin, was the National Endurance Riding Point Champion. According to Trent Jones of Hall and Hall

Ranch Brokers in Ketchum, these modern horse ranches are pretty much what the owner wants to make them. “In the Sun Valley area these range from the more traditional cattle ranch, where horses are just one aspect of the operation, to specialized breeding, training, and boarding facilities, to dude ranches and properties owned by people who like to show, compete, or simply ride horses,” he says. Trent points out that many of these modern ranches have multiple income streams. Larger ranches like the B-Bar-B raise organic hay and cattle in addition to breeding horses. And some the of the smaller boutique ranches, like the Lucky 13 and the Silver Bell in Hailey, host visiting clinics and offer a full range of services from boarding to instruction in a variety of disciplines—including hunter-jumpers, dressage, English and Western riding—and also maintain small breeding operations. There are currently some very good horse properties available in the Sun Valley area at reasonable prices, Trent says. But given the current economic situation, a prospective buyer needs to complete an extensive due diligence and define their goals carefully, preferably with

the help of a qualified broker who knows the area, climate, and local ranches. In short, it’s important to have a clear idea of exactly why you want a horse ranch and what you intend to do with it. Jones explains: “Do you want to raise or breed horses or is that going to be part of a bigger package? Do you want to sell horses, board them, train them, or simply ride for pleasure? And how much can you expect the horse aspect of your plans to contribute to profits or mitigate ranch expenses?” In conclusion, he says, “Once you answer these questions, you are in a solid position to make an offer on one of the many quality properties available here.” LEFT TO RIGHT: Life on the ranch appeals to even small four-legged creatures; winter work on the ranch.

BROSCHOFSKY GALLERIES will present works by Gordon McConnell, opening December 15. McConnell, whose paintings are inspired by western movies, is a native of the West, having been born and raised in rural Colorado. He studied art at Baylor University, at the California Institute of the Arts, and at the University of Colorado, where he earned a master’s degree in 1979. For two decades he worked as curator at the Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings, Montana, before leaving in 1999 to begin work as a full-time painter and independent curator. “Hollywood’s productions immortalized and distorted figures of American history, making mythic characters of frontier lawmen and desperadoes, soldiers and Native Americans, and cowboys and homesteaders,” he says. “I have long studied the relationships between historic fact and the screened fictions of the film industry and have examined the parallel processes of mythmaking and documentation that figure into the way the frontier West has been imagined through several generations and numerous media translations.” www.brogallery.com 360 East Avenue + 208.726.4950

FRIESEN GALLERY will present the exhibition Place and Space with works by Jill Lear for the gallery walk on Friday, November 25. “What began as the study of a particular tree in a particular landscape has now evolved into the study of the concepts of Place and Space,” says Jill. “The examination of a single tree is now a way of transcribing the experience of being in and thinking about Nature and the way in which we take in and process the world around us, literally. Color, light, sound, memory, history all cobbled together in fragments, marks on a page. Erasures forming as the memory is reassessed relived, marks added or deleted as the senses continue to process; as the story continues to be told.” See our interview with Jill on page 90. www.friesengallery.com 320 First Avenue North and Sun Valley Road + 208.726.4174

The Persistence of Memory by Kevin Sloan. Acrylic on canvas, 28” x 22”, at Gilman Contemporary.

GILMAN CONTEMPORARY will present artist Kevin Sloan’s exhibition Modern Parables for the gallery walk on Friday, November 25. Sloan says at the core of his work is a deep concern and respect for the planet and especially its “silent inhabitants”—the animals and plants with whom we share this world. Through allegory and symbolism, Sloan attempts to express this concern and also remind viewers of the wonders of our extraordinary world. His works blend references to artists such as John James Audubon and elements of traditional still life paintings. www.gilmancontemporary.com 661 Sun Valley Road + 208.726.7585 KNEELAND GALLERY will feature a group show with new pastels on paper by James Palmersheim. An avid fly-fisher born and raised in Idaho, Palmersheim’s work was chosen for the 1998 Silver Creek Nature Conservancy poster. He uses the unusual technique of applying pastel with a fine brush to achieve the highly realistic effects in his work. SUN VALLEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS at will open its new multidisciplinary exhibition, Thin Ice: Journeys in Polar Regions, on December 9. This exhibition will continue through February 4, 2012. The earth’s polar regions have long exerted a strong pull on the human imagination. This multidisciplinary project examines the role that the polar regions play in understanding the world through the lens of travels and expeditions. A visual arts exhibition will feature photos by early explorers of the Arctic and Antarctica alongside work by modern and contemporary artists who have visited these parts of the world. A free exhibition tour will take place on Thursday, December 15, at 5:30 p.m. In addition, an exhibition at The Center in Hailey, Due North: Images of Baffin Island and Inuit Art, will open on Friday, December 16, and will continue through February 13. The exhibition in Hailey features photographs taken by Wood River Valley resident Ann Puchner while living on Baffin Island from 1960 to 1961. An opening celebration will take place on Friday, December 16, from 5:30-7 p.m. www.sunvalleycenter.org 191 Fifth Street East in Ketchum and in Hailey at 314 South Second Avenue + 208.726.9491 EXPRESSIONS GALLERY will present Small Works, opening on November 25 for the gallery walk. Expressions Galleries invited good friends and artists Dave McGary, R.A. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts continues its multidisciplinary exhibition, Awkward Stage: Adolescence and Identity, through December 2. The show features an installation made by two artists in collaboration with local teens. Sun Valley area artist Pamela DeTuncq created body-cast sculptures of teens dressed in wool sweatshirts and felted pants, absorbed in electronic devices, while Boston-area graffiti artist Percy Fortini-Wright guided local teens in producing a painted background for DeTuncq’s figures during a workshop in September. Brett Ling, a 17-year-old student at Silver Creek High School in Hailey, was one of the participants in Percy’s workshop. “It was an awesome experience,” he says. “I’m also really excited it’s going to be in the gallery. It inspires me to want to have more of my work in a gallery sometime.” Awkward Stage: Adolescence and Identity exhibition will continue for the gallery walk on Friday, November 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. At 5 p.m. The Center will have a free screening of the half-hour documentary film kids + money by award-winning photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield. VISION AND PASSION AT WORK Gail Severn has been immersed in the Sun Valley gallery scene since it was established more than 35 years ago. Her passion for fine arts is evident in the impressive gallery building she built in the heart of Sun Valley’s gallery world and the caliber of shows she regularly presents. A space that rivals any prestigious gallery across the nation, the Gail Severn Gallery boasts a large rotating wall for exhibition load-ins, four exhibition spaces, and a frame shop. Gail Severn Gallery also includes a two-acre sculpture garden located in the Wood River Valley, which is accessible by appointment only. Her exhibits never fail to delight, surprise, or inspire. The Gail Severn Gallery experience begins with the sky-high glass doors at the entrance. Inside, the plentiful wall space, sleek floors, and beautifully lit works of art entice an observer to take a moment and prepare for a memorable experience. At any time of year, an exhibition at the Gail Severn Gallery will include highly collectible works of art from national and international painters, sculptors, photographers, and mixed-media artists. The gallery also represents artist books, jewelry, and unique artifacts, as well as works by some of today’s most well known artists. In a recent exhibition, A Sense of Place XVI, the Gail Severn Gallery featured work by Victoria Adams,

James Cook, Theodore Waddell, Laura McPhee, and Tony Foster; this group show presented the personal interpretations of each artist’s relationship with landscape. The gallery also presented the exhibition Marks and Conversations III, with sculpture and paintings by as Squeak Carnwath, Raphaëlle Goethals, Gary Komarin, Cole Morgan, Margaret Keelan, Julie Speidel, and Jun Kaneko. Yet another exhibition, Nature, featured works by Ed Musante, Christopher Reilly, Brad Rude, Allison Stewart, and Jane Rosen. For Gail her gallery is the epicenter of her world of collecting, selling, and exhibiting fine art. Her sculpture garden adds another aspect to the distinctive gallery, and Gail uses each space to showcase massive and notable works. These include large format photographs of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area by Laura McPhee in Gail’s 11,000 square-foot indoor space or Jun Kuneko’s gigantic head sculptures in the outdoor sculpture court. With this outstanding venue, Gail has created a seminal art exhibition environment to give collectors a sophisticated art-buying experience in the beautiful mountain environs of Sun Valley, Idaho. To keep her offerings fresh and relevant, she participates yearly in prestigious art fairs including Art Basel Miami and the Chicago Art Fair.

Events at the Gail Severn Gallery are just as remarkable as the setting. It’s rare that an artist does not attend his or her opening exhibitions, and it’s common to see red sale dots on title placards for works on exhibition. The success of the gallery has taken time to establish. Over the past 35 years, Gail has built a reputation, a clientele, an artist base, and exhibition spaces that attest to her passion, vision, and dedication. “Any business infrastructure takes time,” Gail says, “I put a lot of work into building my gallery space. The gallery does act like a local museum. It’s a free recreational activity and it’s sophisticated.” Gail is committed to getting to know the artists she works with and seeing the artist in his or her habitat is essential. “Going to artist studios is exciting,” she says. “Seeing the habitat that is so unique to each artist is wonderful—it’s a window to the soul. It’s wonderful to see what inspires artists, how artists work, and their creative process. You don’t really get to know an artist until you have been to his or her studio.” Gail establishes relationships with artists in several ways. Though she is well connected in the prestigious art-fair world and regularly attends these fairs to scout new and emerging artists, often it’s

+

Gail Severn Gallery clients who tell her about new artists and their work. “Our clients are our largest resource,” she says. But as the Internet has changed how artists find galleries and pitch exhibitions, Gail says art comes from every place imaginable. Her gallery fields more than 100 inquiries a month from artists hoping to show in her space. The Gail Severn Gallery has grown to represent a range of artists from the emerging to the established and highly recognizable, who exhibit on the international arts scene. Gail sees the cultivation of emerging artists as a significant part of their mission. “Our job is twofold,” Gail explains. “We want to go beyond our reach to educate people and sell highly collectible works. It is also equally important to discover younger artists and present works that are more affordable. We have to have the whole range.” Ultimately, Gail’s calling seems larger than the appreciation of fine art—her mission seems to have something to do with paying attention to the world. Throughout her years as a gallery owner, Gail has come to understand that, “People realize how important art is,” she says. “Throughout history, artists have been the ears, the recorders, and the documenters of what is going on in the world. Art is a respite from negativity.”

GET FRAMED AT GAIL SEVERN GALLERY

Not only does Gail Severn Gallery offer a unique and cosmopolitan space to engage with art and artists, it is also offers a framing shop for artists and collectors. In 1974 Gail started the frame shop, a unique aspect of her gallery business and evidence of her commitment to nurturing developing artists and helping collectors make the most of their collection. The frame shop provides artists, clients, and collectors with access to proper framing and handling of the exquisite art she exhibits. “It allows us to help artists who could not frame their own work and present framed archival works properly as well as educate artists,” Gail explains. “For clients, it’s important for them to take care of works in a proper way. We can help people on so many different levels. We are all just caretakers.”

A WORD WITH GAIL

We were curious about Gail’s collection and how she got started. So we asked her a few questions to get the inside scoop. SVPN: What was the first piece in your art collection? Do you remember exactly what inspired you to purchase it? GS: When I was a young child, I collected all kinds of rocks, shells, and forms that I loved; I would carry them home even if I was in another state or far from home. Later when I was an under-graduate at the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to take a class with Ansel Adams when he visited and did a guest lecture and dark room class. At the time he allowed students to purchase his black and white photographs at very reasonable prices. I borrowed $500 from my grandmother (without my parents’ knowledge) and purchased an wonderful image called Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941, which was a Gelatin Silver print. The following year I had the chance to be in another class with Adams and purchased a second print called Aspen Horizontal – New Mexico. The photography classes at the University of Idaho and the classes with Ansel were the beginning of my very strong interest in photography. It was an art form that was still very affordable and would continue to be for many years relative to the rest of the art market. I then sold the Moonrise image to raise the money to start my gallery in the early 70’s. SVPN: What work of art never fails to make you weak in the knees? GS: The St Mary Magdalen c. 1457 carved by Donatello out of wood and is in the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, in Florence Italy, still moves me to tears after visiting it more than five times.

What do trees mean to you? Trees fascinate me—trees witness history. Trees witness time. They are endlessly interesting. Has it always been trees? It started with figures when I was training at the New York Studio School. It was painting and drawing. I graduated in 1998, and I moved to Orcas Island where it was all about the landscape. I was not as interested in the landscape itself as I was in the structure within of the landscape, so I started working with the trees. I became more and more fascinated with them, and that has evolved since I became involved with the works of the philosopher Yi-Fu Tuan. He talks about the concept of “Place” and how people respond to place and how people process the idea of place; he has written amazing books about different cultures’ responses to their environment. What art are you buying? I buy drawings. My favorite work is an Esteban Vicente collage. I go to a few benefits and buy pieces by unknown artists. The Drawing Center is a great source for discovering new artists, especially through their slide registry. What’s next for you?

I just applied to a French organization that supports artists by supplying apartments in Montmartre and the Marais. I pitched a project for which I would study trees in Paris and surrounding Paris and map them in a way that I do in Sun Valley. How do you pick the trees you paint? Sun Valley is a good environment for me to work. It’s different; but the trees that I really love are in cities because of the way they have to grow. It’s their survival, and it’s part of the “trees as witness” idea. How we need them. They grow over the sidewalks and their structure has become part of the manmade vertical buildings. I like the idea of mapping the trees in a city.

a literal description. For me, it’s about the investigation, not the result—trying to create a clear space without giving people the visual clues.

Why are all the titles of your paintings the coordinates of the trees that you paint? Several reasons. For one, it says everything to me what the work is about. It’s about mapping, location, measurement, precision, and what I am interested in formally. Also, I don’t like giving titles to pieces. I want viewers to look at the piece and see what they see. The coordinates communicate that this is where the tree is and this is the space.

Q A

Can you tell us a little about your artistic process? Yes. [Jill points to a wall of photographs.] I cannot work from photographs that I did not take. I have to have been in the space in order to communicate about the space. Right now, I am thinking about a project involving my photographs. I have thousands. I have an idea to do a giant grove. In the studio I also have my watercolors and my big drawings, but the day is more structured than the studio. I can work two hours on each piece and then I lose my focus. In the afternoons I do abstract pieces and I spend a lot of time mixing colors. You can get a lot of colors from just four main colors. What has inspired the new show Place and Space besides philosophy? The abstract is harder because it requires more discipline and intuition, a word I don’t like to use. But, it’s inspired by the difference between space and place. It is about trying to communicate a space without using

Q A

Where are these trees from? New York City; Paris; Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York (where I did an artistin-residence program); and Santa Monica. A piece in progress, which is from Santa Monica, was inspired by a fragment of a tree. I don’t normally do that but I am trying to create monumental landscapes out of a fragment so someone can look at it and think it feels like a mountainous region, or there is a giant space, but they don’t know exactly what it is. What are you reading right now? La Seduction by Elaine Sciolino, who was the Paris bureau chief for The New York Times. She wrote about the concept of seduction in French culture and what it means. She covered all aspects, not just male and female interaction. It’s politics and formalities at the dinner table. It’s everything and how they use it.

JILL LEAR’S NEW EXHIBITION, Place and Space, will open at the Friesen Gallery in Ketchum on Friday, November 25, for the gallery walk from 5 to 8 p.m. Jill will be in attendance.

FASHION

Fashion for the holidays brings a little more flash, a tad more sparkle, and perhaps most of all, a reason to dress up. This season it’s not so much what you wear but how you wear it and how it makes you feel. Personal style reigns supreme. Take your choice of styles: fur, cashmere, or glittery accents. Our valley boasts a plethora of options for sophisticated casual looks, dramatic pieces for once-a-year occasions, and everything in between. Places like Consign Design and Sheepskin Coat Factory will help you get decked out for the season. Plus, they offer plenty of inspiring gift options for those special people on your list.

“Pre-owned apparel is the ultimate recycling experience. Women appreciate having an outlet to shed clothes they no longer wear, want, or need, and enjoy some return on their investment. On the other side, buyers have the opportunity to own pieces they could not—or would not— afford at full price. Plus, it’s fun.”

A visit to Consign Design in West Ketchum is like visiting your aunt or sister—the one with all the fantastic clothes. There’s a palpable buzz around this high-end house-cum-boutique brimming with previously owned apparel and accessories. Browsing is half the fun, but scoring a designer find at one-third of its original price is even better. Currentseason Gucci booties with nary a scratch, like-new Prada bags—often with tags still attached—and Louis Vuitton treasures are customer favorites. But it’s not all designer-filled. You’ll also find workout wear, skiwear, funky jeans, belts, bags, and jewelry for all budgets.

MIMI AVINS + YOUR PERSONAL STYLIST mimiavins@gmail.com | 208.721.2837 Is your closet jammed, but you never know what to wear to look your best? Do you want an easy, elegant or cool uniform for your work and social life? Sun Valley resident Mimi Avins, former fashion editor of the Los Angeles Times, launched Your Personal Stylist to solve these problems and more. Like a friendly family doctor, she makes house calls to help women, men, or teens fine tune an ailing image. “It’s fun for me to see even women who hate to shop get inspired after they’ve learned what colors and proportions work best,” Mimi says. “Although I love a bargain as much as anyone, one of my mottos is ‘Buy less, buy better,’ a strategy that usually results in fewer mistakes. So it can save money in the long run.”

“Since we opened in 1971, our goal has been to offer the finest shearling outerwear and accessories. Beautiful pieces in a range of styles should also be functional. Our collections are designed to be worn, not hung in a closet; they’re waterproof, lightweight, or warm to suit individual lifestyles.”

outlook

december 2011

SVPN’s member real estate agents have a keen understanding of our local real estate market. They interpret data for trends and indicators about market’s viability and health. As the year winds down to an end, we’ve asked some of our members to comment on the key statistics that could help our readers understand the status of the local market. While the real estate market in the Sun Valley area has not been immune to the national economic downturn, our members report that there are good investments out there for the savvy buyer, as well as viable options for first-time homebuyers with good credit. Katherine Rixon (Sun Valley Brokers) says that considering that the number of sales are up, “What the statistics are showing us is that buyers have come back to the table and are purchasing properties where they perceive value. Many of these properties are the REOs and short sales, which are generally priced below

fair market listings. This shows confidence in the marketplace and is the first step towards a recovery. Once the distressed assets are removed from the marketplace, prices will stabilize and possibly start to rise.” This is a recurrent theme in our discussions with our members. Dan Gorham (Windermere Real Estate) has reviewed the current statistics in the distressed market and broken out activity for both short sales and bank-owned properties in comparison fair market properties. Notice that in the resort area, as of November 1, 2011, only 4 percent of the single-family properties currently on the market were distressed—evidence of steady improvement. Also, it’s worth noting that in Hailey, 32 percent of the active listings are qualified as distressed. This means that in the south valley, there are some good deals out there for investors or first-time buyers. Over half the homes sold in Hailey and Bellevue during the past year were distressed indicating that there are many buyers taking advantage of the recently discounted prices. Dan notes, “Banks are not in the business of owning and managing homes and they want these properties sold.” The takeaway? If you’re looking for a deal, they are out there especially in the south valley. And in the resort area (Ketchum/Sun Valley), the best bargains are likely to be snapped up quickly. Buyers are encouraged to get pre-qualified with a local lender, which provides added credibility when an offer is presented. Whatever your situation, it helps to work with an experienced real estate agent because getting the best deal or navigating the waters of distressed home sales can be tricky. See our SVPN member list on pages 8-9 to find an experienced real estate agent.

Jim Figge and Jed Gray of Sun Valley Associates are cautiously optimistic about the current status of the market. They note that the overall inventory is down by 12 percent. Jim says, “What those statistics represent to the agents who study them is that we’re doing what we need to be doing from standpoint of inventory. Moving through the distressed properties shows that we’re most likely moving towards a stabilized market.” SVPN recognizes that the total volume sold is down by 6 percent, but that’s not necessarily a bad sign. Consider the fact that the number of units sold is actually up by 19%. It follows that if there were more units sold but the total dollar amount was down, many of those units must have been in the distressed market and as our members suggest, moving through the distressed inventory will allow for the market to right itself.

FROM KYLE KUNZ, SUN VALLEY APPRAISAL Sign that a Recovery is on the Horizon “Although the Hailey singlefamily market has seen price reductions in the prior 12-month period, we are beginning to see a few bright spots with regard to stabilization. Current indications in Northridge subdivision show stabilization of higher-end homes in the $500,000 range, and we have also witnessed a few homes closing at full asking price, unlike the typical 5 to 10 percent off listing prices.”

I recently was visiting my daughter and her family from Los Angeles. I had both artificial knees re-operated on and was having localized pain that ibuprofen orally was not helping. I talked with Cathy and Paula and they contacted my doctor in California and requested a compounded anti-inflammatory topical cream. The cream allowed me to hike and enjoy all the activities this Valley offers. I cannot thank the staff at Valley Apothecary enough for allowing me to get the most out of my time with my family. —Garry Pearson

Our traditional pharmacy practice takes most major insurance plans so we may fill all your retail prescriptions. In addition, our trained Pharmacist can provide medications, transforming raw chemicals into unique dosage and delivery forms that are not commercially available.

What is compounding? • Compounding affords our doctors and patients the flexibility required to meet individual needs and achieve therapeutic results that may not be met with commercial preparations. • Compounding is the art of producing medications, utilizing raw chemicals and integrating into creative dosage and delivery forms. • Our pharmacists assess the chemical and physical characteristics of a drug to produce quality products that are patient-specific.

Not everyone stays at Sun Valley Resort when they’re visiting, but everyone can enjoy the resort’s classic ambiance at the Duchin Lounge. Polished wood and seatworn leather get a lively boost from the lounge’s exciting jazz acts, including New York’s Paul Tillotson trio, which brings its award-winning performances to Sun Valley all winter.

Located on the first floor of the Sun Valley Lodge, the lounge will take you back in time—you’ll imagine that Bill Janss might sit down next to you after a day on the mountain, or Glenn Miller take up the baton for an impromptu swing.

The Duchin is open noon to 1 a.m. every day, with happy hour from 4-5:30 p.m. For information, visit www.sunvalley.com/things-to-do/dining, or call 208.622.2145. If you need that après beer right away, you know, the before-you-even-unbuckle-your-ski-boots sort of right away, then head down to Apple’s Bar and Grill at the base of Warm Springs where Hank and Heather Minor, husband-and-wife owners of this popular watering hole, will treat you just right. They’ll have ski races of yesteryear playing on the televisions and the walls are always flanked with bibs, pictures, and other ski-phernalia to celebrate the sport. The food is great, the company even better, and the beer is always cold. Stop in and share some tall-tales from your day on the hill!

Edgewater 4 minutes from Ketchum, this 4 acre lot on the Bigwood River offers unusual privacy so close to town. Adjacent open spaces cause the property to feel twice its actual size. The building envelope is out in the open with spectacular mountain views of Owl Rock, Red Cliffs, and Turkey Bowl, and snugs up to a mature riparian forest with a trail to the Bigwood River. Horses allowed will get to know the Elk and Moose who hang out here. $1,590,000 MLS # 11-310696

Boulder Mountain Views This 2.5 acre parcel has extraordinary views of the Boulders, Durrance, Griffen Butte, and up Eagle Creek. Rocking Ranch This building lot in North West Ketchum on Bear Lane is just under an acre. It views the original Ned Foster Homestead cabin, the original homestead in West Ketchum, that is a clue to the unique location at the base of Frenchmans Gulch for sun and close proximity to water at the Bigwood River (pick of the litter 130 years ago!) Fishing is only about 100 yards away via adjacent access trail, and Hemingway School and Park are not much further. Exceptional homes form the neighborhood in this uniquely hidden enclave. This is a rare property. $1,625,000 MLS # 10-307061

Think Leeds Gold! Views of the Bowls and Seattle Ridge are complemented by views up Parker Gulch and wetland open space across the street.
