“It was a night to remember to wrap up the year, all to benefit our programming, which brought longtime and new supporters to The Argyros,” says Margaret Hamamoto, Director of Development. “It was great fun to have an event that raised funds to continue what we love to do most at The Argyros—to enthrall audiences and inspire performers.” Funds raised from the evening allow The Argyros to invite world-class performances to the Wood River Valley and serve as a home for the Valley’s nonprofit organizations. The generous gifts made by residents and visitors are vital to the success of The Argyros. CELEBRATING 13 YEARS

svpn-mag.com

February 28 – March 3, 2024 It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge the pivotal role of our community members, our Patrons, the Founders Circle, and all of the loyal partners that have allowed us to enter our thirteenth year of the Sun Valley Film Festival. Your commitment affords us the liberty to explore novel concepts, implement impactful programs that resonate with our dedicated audience, and has steered us toward a more self-sustaining future… Thanks to you, we can truly call ourselves an independent film festival. In 2023, we became more than a five-day festival. We launched year-round programming with SVFFirst Looks, Monthly Movies, and education initiatives in our mission to offer an annual source of inspiration and entertainment throughout the calendar year. This year, in addition to your Festival favorites like Coffee Talks and The Screenwriters Lab,

we are excited to introduce SVFF Shop Talks— specialized conversations geared towards educating audiences about industry hot topics, beginning with an interactive discussion on the promising future of Artificial Intelligence in film. This forwardthinking element not only reflects our commitment to staying at the forefront of industry trends but also showcases our dedication to providing elevated and educational content for our curious audience. Thank you for being part of the Sun Valley Film Festival family. Together, we are developing a unique and independent celebration of cinema that reflects the vibrancy and interests of our community. As we move into our second decade, we are committed to being a festival that enriches the cultural fabric of our community. Here’s to another year of celebrating the power of storytelling! SVFF 2024 VISION AWARD HONOREE

DAVID O. RUSSELL AND THE ANONYMOUS HERO by Sabina Dana Plasse

Cinema has the ability to bring the world to people and offer an understanding of place, time, and character. The inherent beauty within filmmaking presents itself as a story on infinite levels so that anyone who watches a film can experience it however they like to receive and absorb it. It is visual storytelling, and mastering its capacity to infuse the psyche and soul takes an artist dedicated to the craft. Those who achieve this level are few and far between, and American film writer, director, and producer David O. Russell is one of them.

As a 2024 Sun Valley Film Festival Vision Award Honoree, David O. Russell understands comedic and dramatic storytelling through film, often presenting complex and tragic characters whose purpose in the story is often a window to a unique understanding of humanity. David O. Russell films such as The Fighter (2010), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), or American Hustle (2013) are all Oscar®-nominated and depict circumstances with complicated relationships and families with emotions and beauty ranging from the ordinary to the unusual, including sociopolitical tales and the worlds of mental illness. For Russell, living in stories has always been in close competition with living in the real world.

“It was always better to live in stories—cinema stories, fiction stories, true stories,” says Russell. “As a human, I love living stories, which is probably true for most filmmakers. Movies saved my life. A story captivates and moves you and shows you who you are. It makes you feel part of the world and not alone, which is a reason why I have always loved movies. You can live in a story that inspires you and see others going through it. It allowed me to survive with courage and a sense of humor, which has nurtured me my entire life.” Jennifer Lawrence won the Academy Award®for Best Actress for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook, and Christian Bale and Melissa Leo won Best Supporting Actor and Actress in The Fighter. Russell is the only director with two consecutively-released films (Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle) that garnered Academy Award® nominations in all four acting categories. In addition, Jennifer Lawrence earned an Academy Award® nomination and a Golden Globe win for Best Actress for her work in Joy (2015)—another David O. Russell film.

“If I connect with something, I become deeply compassionate about it, and no one can change my mind.”

“If I connect with something, I become deeply compassionate about it, and no one can change my mind,” says Russell. “It’s how I feel about films I love. A film is like treatment. It gives me medicine, courage, and fresh energy, especially other filmmakers who inspire and educate me and, for that matter, all of us.” Richard Brody of The New Yorker called David O. Russell’s 2022 film Amsterdam “among the most emotionally committed and aesthetically distinctive films of the time... an exemplary piece of resistance cinema.” Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington headline the ensemble cast, which includes Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek, Chris Rock, Zoe Saldana, Michael Shannon, Andrea Riseborough, and Taylor Swift. svpn-mag.com

“It is a privilege to make movies,” he says. “You’re very fortunate if you can do it. The price you pay to be a filmmaker is that you have to continue to make films and do it well. I work on stories every day, and I know when I wake up, there are things I must do. It is a craft, and there is work. If you keep working, eventually, the stories tell you how to do it in a better way, which happened with Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter. The movies spoke back to me, and you live in that world.” Connecting to the idea of neighborhood energy, which is a big part of Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, Russell enjoys the idea of community because there is rhythm and ritual to it. “It’s similar to how I feel when I go to the 58

were not in the original film for a special SONY anniversary edition and will give some context to how the film came into being and the decisions he made to create it.

Part of Russell’s connection to people and community is also in his philanthropic desire to give back and support, which includes McLean Hospital, a leader in psychiatric care, research, and education. In 2013, Russell received the McLean Award for his support and advocacy for issues surrounding mental health. His advocacy efforts brought him to Washington, D.C., where he and actor Bradley Cooper supported legislation in Congress and met with Vice President Joe Biden to discuss parity for mental health in all health care. Other acknowledgments include a 2011 Ghetto Film School Honor, a 2013 Glenholme School’s Excelsior Award, the 2012 Variety Indie Impact Award, and a 2015 Teamsters Local 25 Gala for Autism Gala Honoree.

“When you share the emotional experience of watching a film with others, you are able to cherish film,” Russell says. “There’s a human goodness even under the most challenging and criminal situations.”

“When you love people and see them struggling, you do whatever you can to help them,” he says. “It’s the human experience.” Russell has been nominated for five Academy Awards® and four Golden Globes and has won four Independent Spirit Awards and two BAFTA Awards. He has also been nominated for three WGA awards and two DGA awards. Russell has collaborated with actors Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale, and Mark Wahlberg on three films each, Robert De Niro on four films, and Amy Adams on two. Other Russell films include I Heart Huckabees (2004), Three Kings (1999), Flirting with Disaster (1996), and Spanking the Monkey, which won the Sundance Audience Award in 1994. Bringing American Hustle to the 2024 Sun Valley Film Festival, Russell will present a version with scenes that

American Hustle was nominated for ten Oscars®, the fifteenth film in Oscar® history to feature nominations in all four acting categories, and at the Golden Globe Awards, won Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, as well as Best Actress—Musical or Comedy for Amy Adams, and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. It was nominated for seven Golden Globes. In addition, American Hustle was nominated for ten BAFTAs, winning Best Actress in Supporting Role for Jennifer Lawrence, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Makeup and Hair. The film also won the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards. It was awarded the Best Film of the Year by the New York Film Critics Circle, as well as Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. In addition, it was also nominated at the Directors Guild Awards, the Producers Guild Awards, and the Writers Guild Awards. American Hustle was also included in the American Film Institute’s list of Top Ten Films of 2013. “Everyone in American Hustle is a deeply flawed, unappealing outlaw, but they each have a chance to get beyond their flaws,” Russell says. “It’s trusting the art of human connection and dealmaking inside an FBI operation, which is passionless without love, that reveals the desire and need for love and compassion, and I do like the anonymous hero.”  American Hustle now available on disc and digital.

Secrets of the Octopus Octopi are like aliens on Earth: three hearts, blue blood, and the ability to squeeze through a space the size of their eyeballs. But there is so much more to these weird and wonderful animals. Intelligent enough to use tools or transform their bodies to mimic other animals and even communicate with different species, the secrets of the octopus are more extraordinary than we ever imagined.

ANA’S PICKS SVFF Director of Programming Ana Souza shares her 2024 films to watch by Sabina Dana Plasse

Sun Valley Film Festival director of programming Ana Souza has an inherent love for independent film and the stories that enlighten and engage us through the power of cinema. Immersed in independent film year-round, Ana is always searching for the gems that resonate with the SVFF audiences. For 2024, she has uncovered several films to share and to get us excited for this year’s Sun Valley Film Festival. Despite being from very different genres and

66

svpn-mag.com

types of films, Ana’s picks explore a variety of worlds with one exciting thing in common—these selections are all first features. “Sun Valley is committed to championing independent voices and uplifting new perspectives, so it’s always a treat for us to be able to showcase debut feature films from directors who are daring to take risks and try the impossible—getting a first feature off the ground,” says Ana.

Your Monster It’s always a gift when a filmmaker has connections to the Sun Valley Film Festival. Caroline Lindy, the director of Your Monster, is also a festival alum whose shorts Kindred Spirit and Aspirational Slut screened at SVFF. However, even more unique, Caroline met her now-husband Daniel Roher, director and Oscar® winner for the documentary Navalny, at SVFF 2022, when both filmmakers had their projects at the Festival. Your Monster is a creative tour de force—a mishmash of genres that’s part rom-com, part horror film, with dashes of musical theater and a fantastic cast that delivers top-notch performances. The film follows a soft-spoken actress whose life is upended when she discovers a strange and oddly charming monster living in her closet. It’s an “after-hours” title, but one that is interested in reinventing the rules of midnight movies. It proves to be a wild and enjoyable ride about empowerment and how we can embrace our inner demons. “This is a full circle moment for SVFF,” says Ana. “We have championed Caroline Lindy, and for her to come back with a feature is a very great moment, especially for the trajectory of her personal life.”

Continuing, Ana shares, “It says so much about the Festival’s atmosphere and how it brings people together. It’s unique for a festival of this size, which is not always the case. And for Daniel and Caroline to be united while admiring each other’s work at SVFF is even more special and for all connected to them.” Ana adds, “Caroline’s creativity in Your Monster is very unique. She stretched her resources to encompass a story that looks very thoughtfully at female power. Her favorite comment about Your Monster from a test screener was that it was as “if Nora Ephron had directed a monster movie.’” svpn-mag.com

Maestra Maggie Contreras presents a thoughtful and inspiring documentary about the only female conducting competition in the world. We get to know several subjects from different countries who take us through what it means to be in a traditionally male-dominated field and to juggle the demands of their personal and professional lives. At the same time, they work to perfect and master their art. After seeing the success of a film like Tar, it’s invigorating to meet real female conductors who are pioneering the field and to see the community formed when they come together and support each other. As a first film, Maggie directs with elegance and sensitivity—the trust she has built with the women in the film is palpable. “It’s addressing a world people are just learning about,” says Ana. “This film looks at women from around the world and it becomes about building a sisterhood and less about competition. It’s a portrait of their lives and how they juggle their personal and professional responsibilities. It’s a lens into the art form of conducting, and this film makes the art form accessible to all.”

Tokyo Cowboy Director Marc Marriott presents a beautiful and humanistic drama about cross-cultural experiences where a Japanese businessman is forced to revamp a cattle ranch in Montana and adapt to an entirely new way of life. It’s intelligent, funny, profoundly moving, and a very accomplished first feature with an ensemble cast. “It’s a beautiful story on cultural exchange and how natural surroundings open our minds,” says Ana. “It’s extraordinary in its execution and detail with a charm and a sweet but funny tone, especially regarding the contrasting lifestyles. It’s nice to see a film that honors those choices.”

Janet Planet Director Annie Baker’s feature film debut is a meditative portrait of childhood from the perspective of an 11 year-old girl who is witnessing her single mother’s many relationships, friendships, and attempts at trying to find her place within the world in a theater community. It features a phenomenal performance from Julianne Nicholson and a breakout turn from Zoe Ziegler, who is unforgettable. Annie brings her mastery as an award-winning playwright to a living, breathing cinematic poem full of subtleties, crafting a careful exploration of how we simultaneously mirror and reject our parents while finding our own voices. “It’s a subtle and grounded character drama,” says Ana. “It’s a gem with beautiful writing and character development. It’s a real snapshot of coming of age with a single parent and the world around this. Annie’s theater background informs much of the world of the film, which is lovely.”

THE IDEAS OF THE FUTURE SVFF introduces new panel on AI in filmmaking by Martha Williams

72

svpn-mag.com

If you followed the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes in 2023, you know Hollywood is nervous about artificial intelligence (AI). Both Guilds pointed to the potential loss of jobs and creative infringement from new technologies. Yet, there are also exciting prospects for up-and-coming or independent filmmakers with fewer resources, limited only by their imaginations. Tools from OpenAI, Concept.art, and Wonder Dynamics are among those transforming filmmaking—augmenting and improving the process at every stage. The SVFF Shop Talk, “AI in Service of Storytelling,” will explore these exciting new technologies through live demonstrations and conversations with their creators and the filmmakers using them. The panel is being produced by the Festival in collaboration with Lyra Katzman, director of development at Narrow Isle Productions, who has been watching the AI space closely. “We want to show how adaptable AI can be,” says Katzman. “How anyone can do it on one level, and that there are also more sophisticated tools available. We’ll talk through the changes going on in the industry and bring filmmakers and enthusiasts into a world they might not know much about.” The panel will walk the audience through the different phases of production showcasing, in real-time, how specific AI tools can be used. For film development and preproduction, OpenAI’s DALL-E aids in research and worldbuilding through generative text-to-image models, helping creators organize their thoughts, produce a storyboard, and create backgrounds. svpn-mag.com

“We’ll talk through the changes going on in the industry and bring filmmakers and enthusiasts into a world they might not know much about.” —Lyra Katzman

Concept.art, launched by Christian Cantrell last year, allows writers to import scripts into its system and analyze and improve them through conversation with the AI. Cantell’s software also offers script coverage — a short review and analysis that can be handed to film executives considering developing a screenplay. “This can take a long time for filmmakers,” Katzman says of the report that breaks down a script scene by scene, giving producers or agents an idea of the story, its characters, and what it will take to make the film. Concept.art even creates different coverage versions for comparison. It allows writers and others to interact with the script: asking it questions about the viability of shooting, about character arcs, and whether a script is similar to other films or television shows. “As a developer, you can cover so many more scripts than you’d be able to otherwise,” says Katzman, “and maybe find one that might otherwise get passed over.” During the production phase, Concept.art is again useful for organizing and planning props, sound effects, location and lighting needs, and parsing which actors are in which scenes. Post-production often involves digital manipulation, which Wonder Dynamics offers as a new and more cost-effective alternative. The visual effects (VFX) tool can track an actor’s performance and insert a computer-generated (CG) character into a scene. The software captures everything from body motion and facial performance to lighting. “All the artist needs is a camera,” touts a Wonder Dynamics promo video.

Most importantly for those fearing AI, Wonder Dynamics “doesn’t feel like it’s trying to replace artists,” says Katzman. “You have artists creating the CG characters and actors showing their full, real performances. You have all of the same tools, but now you can create an animated or live-action film without raising the budget. It’s really creative-friendly and artist-forward.” Through demos of these tools and a conversation with the brains behind them, the SVFF panel will showcase what’s available to filmmakers right now, empowering independents to pursue ideas and projects they might otherwise not be able to do. “It’s been such a hot topic this year,” says Sun Valley Film Festival Coordinator Marlowe Early. “We want to show our audiences and filmmakers how AI can be a tool, not something to be scared of. These are the ideas of the future.” “There’s so much, and it changes every single day,” Katzman says. “It’s really important to educate people about what new tools are available, especially for independent filmmakers who can lower their costs. And for film enthusiasts, it’s really interesting to learn about where the industry might go. People are curious about what might be possible in the future. And what once seemed impossible is now possible — that’s interesting for everybody.” 

FOR THE LOVE OF STORYTELLING Behind the scenes with High Scribe

by Martha Williams

Each year Sun Valley Film Festival’s (SVFF) High Scribe brings together film enthusiasts, emerging screenwriters, and industry insiders through a series of programs. High Scribe begins months before the five-day Festival with the opening of a screenwriting competition. Hundreds of submissions arrive each year, ranging from dramas and comedies to sci-fi, action, and everything in between. “A theme emerges every year,” says Screenwriters Lab Director Emily Granville, who oversees the High Scribe programs produced by SVFF. “One year, it was the space shuttle exploding. This year there are more horror movies than ever, possibly because they’re easier to get made,” she adds.

svpn-mag.com

77

Howard Owens

A Script Club, made up of local writers and readers, helps narrow the stack. The volunteers read screenplays throughout the winter, sifting through pages to help the best scripts rise to the top. During the process, readers learn about what makes a script great and get to read the stories of hopeful and inventive young writers. Three finalists are announced ahead of the Festival, and the winning screenplay is selected by a guest judge. Past judges have included producer and director Chris Moore (Project Greenlight, Good Will Hunting) and screenwriter and director Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana). This year’s top screenplay will be selected by awardwinning producer Howard Owens, a founder of Propagate Content and the former president of National Geographic Channels. Owens was also part of Reveille, the NBCaffiliated production company behind The Office, Ugly Betty, MasterChef, and other iconic television series. A two-time Emmy winner for You vs. Wild and In Her Hands for Netflix, Owens brings to his judging position these accolades and his recent experience working on Hillary for Hulu, Killing Kennedy, and Running Wild with Bear Grylls for National Geographic. “He’s terrific,” says Emily Granville. “And a great person to have potentially helping some of the finalists. The writers are always excited to meet producers like Owens who could help them with their work.” “People in our community like to learn about all the angles of storytelling, to support emerging writers and their work, and to learn about what’s going on behind the scenes.” —Emily Granville

The winning writer also enjoys mentorship from the Festival’s network of award-winning screenwriters and producers such as Will McCormack, Chris Moore, and Heather Rae, giving these artists industry connections that may help galvanize their budding careers. “We have a pretty good success rate for helping people push their scripts along,” says Granville of SVFF’s success in helping screenwriters break into the industry. Last year’s winner was Michael Buonocore, whose feature comedy script The First Michael follows a bumbling podcaster who journeys to Florida to confront his

biological father, finds out he’s got the wrong guy, and learns that he’s searching for ‘the family he didn’t know he needed.’ The script is based on Buonocore’s own experiences. “He wasn’t even a screenwriter,” Granville says, “but turned his story into a screenplay. It was such a sweet, hopeful thing, which you don’t find very often, and people really responded.” Now in its twelfth year, the High Scribe Competition is also growing this year to include a residency for its winning screenwriter, who will be invited to return later in the year for a week as the Writer-in-Residence at the historic Ernest and Mary Hemingway House, owned and operated by The Community Library. “It’s a huge addition,” says Granville. “Being able to work in such a historic space—it’s a great honor for someone to have and something that screenwriters will be excited about.” During a return visit, the screenwriter will also continue sharing their work with the community through programming with the Library and SVFF. During the Festival itself, passholders and the general public can enjoy the High Scribe Screenwriters Lab, an annual onstage conversation between a well-known screenwriter and another industry insider.

Nat Faxon. Each year the conversation reveals insights into the process behind great scripts and how they come to life. Granville credits the Sun Valley community’s engagement with both emerging writers and industry insiders for the High Scribe programs’ successes. “People in our community like to learn about all the angles of storytelling, to support emerging writers and their work, and to learn about what’s going on behind the scenes,”she says. “They get to be a part of discovering these talents. And nothing is more fun than when you discover something.” 

and David Friendly, the Oscar®-nominated editor and producer responsible for Little Miss Sunshine, Pretty Woman, American Pie, We Are Marshall, The Proposal, and many more films. Ten finalists will be selected and receive a Festival award, then narrowed down to three finalists who will receive a cash award. New this year—those three films will be premiered ahead of hot-ticket screenings, granting them the exciting opportunity to be viewed by a large audience. THE INTERNSHIPS

Along with the competition, SVFF is growing an internship program that selects aspiring filmmakers from all Wood River Valley high schools to serve as interns during the Festival, allowing them to experience the event from all angles. By working across all departments, this opportunity will provide unique exposure to the world of filmmaking, opportunities to build industry connections, and the hard skills of working in a setting with production demands. THE SVJR FILM WORKSHOPS

Last month, John, Will, and Jack conducted their first filmmaking workshop—Short Form Media Production—designed for Wood River 7th grade through 12th grade students as part of SVFF’s education initiative to inspire and support the next generation of storytellers. Says John, “We really want to see more local teens interested in filmmaking and submitting to the local festival so they can be part of this entire experience.” 82

svpn-mag.com

The workshop took students through the basics of the entire filmmaking process, from crafting impactful narratives to scripting and practical filming using accessible resources like smartphone cameras. The Nordstroms covered everything from editing to sound design, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of bringing stories to life on screen. The end result—three teams each producing a professional mini-short that will have an audience at the Festival’s Idaho Shorts. “We wanted to simplify the process for these teens and show them it’s possible to make a quality short film, suitable for screening, with just a smartphone and basic computer,” says John. “Hopefully it has lit a fire in them, and in the future, they’ll be submitting on a regular basis. That’s our intention. We’d love to get more local film-makers participating in the competition.” 

GRAVIRAX A better way to get your skis from here to there by Sabina Dana Plasse

FEATURE

Once upon a time, skis were very tall, very straight, and required the technique of Stein Eriksen to make great turns. Boots were also laced up, but that’s a different story for another time. Fortunately for all of us, ski technology has made major advances since those bad old days. With the curve, we can all carve. The same thing has happened with what we wear to stay warm while still looking good on the slopes. But, the final frontier, the method of transporting your gear and crew to and from the hill, has remained static for years. svpn-mag.com

89

Gravirax is game-changing and highly functional, with carefully crafted and iterated design features that allow your car to be empty of gear and filled with people. As any parent or adult who drops off and picks up kids at a mountain will attest, the Gravi system is simple enough that a seven-year-old can be in charge while the driver stays cozy in their seat.

“Many people shared their frustration of a car packed full with gear and no room for people or having to finagle a rack on top of a car, especially with SUVs, which continue to get taller and taller.” —Dan Goldman

We all know that there is no bliss to be found when your journey involves climbing on top of your grit-covered car in ski boots, trying to open a rack with freezing fingers, listening to everyone whine because it all takes so long, and then watching the skis scratch the side of your car as they slide to the ground with a clatter. For those of us who are on the shorter side, this whole experience is infinitely worse and potentially dangerous. A trip to the orthopedist before you even take a run is no way to enjoy your ski day. And if the locking mechanism on the roof rack freezes or fails, the whole situation goes downhill quickly. The mountain locals who started Gravirax in Aspen, Colorado, knew there had to be a better way. Taking their creative cue from the cycling industry, Dan Goldman and Carl Walker invented a solution that transforms the experience of getting your gear from here to there, making it as easy as loading equipment onto a gondola. The Gravirax system has taken the rooftop ski rack off the top of the car and put it on the back of your vehicle. Similar to the evolution of bike racks, Gravirax provides a solution for ski and snowboard transport that is accessible, safe, and super-fast. 90

svpn-mag.com

“In our town, a lot of people were using their cars as rolling locker rooms,” says Dan. “Many people dedicated their cars to ski and snowboard storage throughout the season, which didn’t change until the snow was gone. People shared their frustration of a car packed full with gear and no room for people or having to finagle a rack on top of a car, especially with SUVs, which continue to get taller and taller. Also, the wear and tear to the inside of the car and that moldy smell definitely puts a damper on resale value.” Enter Gravirax. Many design iterations have resulted in an elegant solution that puts an end to all of the hassles associated with getting gear to and from the mountain for a glorious ski day. Gravirax is a patented design made in the U.S., and quality and efficiency are significant parts of its construction. The current Gravirax model is highly adjustable and can sit in 72 locations depending on your car’s backup camera position, tailgate, or hitch to deliver an optimal fit. This placement flexibility allows you to continue to raise and lower your back hatch without having to pivot the rack, and does not get in the way of your rear view or license plate. The racks are six inches in diameter and come in sets of four or six, with tenset versions for sprinter vans. Gravirax comes with a lifetime warranty and any questions users might have are handled by ski town locals who really understand. Built like kryptonite, the rack will last for decades. No plastic parts and pieces or fiddly bits to break or freeze. “The Gravirax will need to be bequeathed because it is virtually indestructible,” says Dan. “It’s great for your dad to keep him from climbing up on the car in ski boots, and it’s also a huge time-saver for the moms and dads shuttling kids to the mountains for ski team practice and races—they can stay in the car while kids take care of their own equipment. It’s a grab-and-go for kids; for others, you keep your coffee in one hand and grab your gear in the other. Anyone who skis a great deal will love it.”

FEATURE

Education and awareness are twofold for Gravirax. How do the skis stay in? It’s gravity—hence the name. Gravity keeps skis in—tips down and baskets up—and skis and poles sit two feet deep in the tube on a cushioned base with holes for snow load. There are sleeves for snowboards based on the same construction as the rack. And the designers made sure that there is plenty of room for big, wide powder skis. “We have sold a thousand racks with no lost skis,” says Dan. “Safety is paramount in the Gravirax structure and use. It’s durable and made out of heavy-gauge steel. In fact we have discovered an unintended benefit as a result of our solid construction. A number of users have called to let us know the rack protected their car when they were rear-ended in snowstorms. This was certainly not part of our thinking, but it’s a cool additional feature.” The ultimate endorsement for Gravirax might be the rapid adoption of the system by commercial properties in ski towns. Working with the hotels in Ketchum, including the Limelight Hotel Ketchum and The Knob Hill Inn, Gravirax has become a great way to enhance customer service. Hotel drivers rave about how quickly they can now get guests out 92

svpn-mag.com

on the hill. In addition, Gravirax has provided racks to the Sun Valley Ski and Education Foundation, as well as ski clubs and other ski organizations around the West that support skiing and snowboarding for the next generation. Gravirax has also become very popular among Lyft and Uber drivers, taxis, and any other transport company where speed counts. For long highway travel, Gravirax has a cover made of a thick dry bag material, which is waterproof with a double zipper, to keep skis and snowboards clean and safe for the ride. “It’s made by skiers who live in ski towns,” says Dan. “It’s a rack you can load in seconds. It’s flat and square, so it’s easy to take off and put on the ground in a corner of your garage, at which point it becomes off-season storage for skis, poles, and snowboards.” Gravirax makes transport easy, and best of all, for après in the parking lot, it can serve as a picnic table, a bit of functionality that is always at the top of the list when it comes to mountain culture and lifestyle.  gravirax.com

downtime and got the doors open for the holidays to ring in 2024 with style and excitement.

With ceilings, new lighting, improved acoustics, and plenty of areas to move about, eat, and drink, Whiskey’s on Main is poised as Ketchum’s new hangout—and it’s been worth the wait! Its appeal for socializing and bringing back Ketchum’s Main Street vibe is a welcome change for an old but new spot to hang out in town and enjoy some nightlife. Ensuring everything was operating on all pistons was the Herculean effort of a Whiskey’s on Main staff that never took any

“It’s a nice comfortable space,” says Whiskey’s on Main owner Brandon Kuvara. “People wanted to have a place to dance, and it’s here. Opening up the stage area has proved to be great for the space. It’s a building with really good bones, and we were able to do cosmetic renovations along with updates to the kitchen. We wanted to modernize and be thoughtful with the material we used and implemented, and it shows.”

Whiskey’s on Main hired locally for their construction as much as possible, including Jake Ebersole, who created the steel liquor cage for the center bar in the round. In addition, the Brown Note Productions audio, lighting, video, staging, and backline are working at full capacity, and anyone who attended New Year’s Eve with Casio Dreams will attest to it. With a unified audio, video, and lighting control system and a digital audio mixing console, LED displays, a stage projection system, and more, Whiskey’s on Main boasts state-of-the-art stage, lighting, and live music and entertainment production. This enhancement project delivered by Brown Note Productions, which uses only the best products available, is noticeable and exciting. “We were brought in to bring the Whiskey’s space back to life as a venue,” says Brown Note Productions Director of Integration Zach Richards. “It required the caliber of pro AV equipment to make it shine. We do big and little projects to make sure live music performances are the best experiences they can be, and we work with manufacturers who make this happen.” 98

Creating a space with Brown Note Productions was part of Kuvara’s plan for Whiskey’s on Main from the outset, and it only adds to the enjoyment and entertainment that now exists. “We’re the next in line proprietors,” says Kuvara. “We wanted to create Whiskey’s on Main to live way beyond us, and I believe we reached this goal. It’s open for everybody, and we want families to come and enjoy during the day, and then we transition to the evening for adults only.” Various DJs put out the vibe for après ski Thursday through Saturday and late-night, and live music and other events are being booked for the coming months.

STANLEY’S WINTERFEST The cure for cabin fever by Lori Williams

Stanley’s winters demand hardy souls. Come February, either you’ve jumped ship or been shaped and forged by the beast that it is. When you’ve made it through to the other side of long nights, sub-zero temperatures, seized engine blocks, and road closures by avalanches, you might be stronger and more resilient but also a little wacky. Enter Winterfest—a community celebration when winter in the central Idaho mountains turns the corner to see the light of longer days. From February 16 through 18, Stanley will throw down their 15th annual wildly wacky and fun weekend to kick against winter, gather for fellowship, laughter, and merriment, and celebrate old traditions. The family-friendly event, which happens every President’s Day weekend, is all about snow, thrills, and keeping it weird, and is a sure-fire cure for cabin fever. The fun starts Friday night with a kick-off beach party at Mountain Village Resort’s Velvet Falls Dance Hall. All the weekend events are opportunities to dress up, and beach attire starts the craziness with prizes for the best. DJ music ramps it up to dance off the winter doldrums and get rowdy and ready for Saturday’s eclectic extravaganza. 100

Saturday morning, the fun begins at 11am on Ace of Diamonds Boulevard and Wall Street with family sledding to get warmed up. Boise Rock School, an independent nonprofit arts education organization, will perform, followed by Max Kaplan and the Magics, bringing funky soul music and blues to the Street Dance at 12:30pm. Throughout the day, Mountain Village Resort, the Kasino Club, Stanley High Country Inn, and Papa Brunee’s will have good eats available for purchase. Cookies and cocoa will be offered at the Stanley Library. The Turkey Bowl, an Ace of Diamonds-turned-bowling alley throw-down, begins the day’s wacky and weird event lineup as frozen birds are hurtled down the street toward a set of pins. The “Howlin’ Wolf” Raft Ride, the largest event and by far the most favorite, begins at noon and runs down the hill from the airstrip behind the Mercantile. Says Jeffrey Hall, Winterfest President, “We transport people in snowcats to the top of the hill, load them up in white water rafts, and send them down a groomed track at screaming speeds. Multiply a regular tube ride by 100, and that’s what it feels like to be a roller coaster on snow. It’s just a crazy event. The track is extremely fast.” Not to worry, though; there’s a berm at the end to capture the speed and bring the raft to a stop. This year, a large elevated platform has been added to better view Papa Brunee’s Pizza Slam, where competitors devour as much pizza as possible in five minutes. “Basically, we weigh the pizza beforehand, and whoever eats the most wins $100,” explains Jeffrey. “It’s pretty insane.” Other events include a drag snowshoe race, followed by a children’s and adults’ three-legged race, and the hilarious Outhouse Race, which begins at 4pm. Hard-core competitors begin building their contraptions months in advance. The event has become so popular that competition heats are required, and it’s a crowd-viewing favorite down Ace of Diamonds. Rules and regulations are found on the website. Max Kaplan takes over the Velvet Falls Dance Hall at 8pm on Saturday and 7pm on Sunday. You can get your groove on at the Kasino Club’s Disco Party. 102

svpn-mag.com

Attendance at Winterfest is free thanks to sponsorships and merchandise sales — hats, beanies, sweatshirts, stickers, and more. Any proceeds go back to Stanley Community nonprofits. The only events charged for include the raft ride with the choice of unlimited snowcat rides to the top or a per ticket price, fees which are given back to the snowcat operators for fuel and maintenance. A pizza slam entry is $20 to offset the winner’s prize and pizza costs. Stanley’s city parking lot allows easy access to Ace of Diamonds and Mountain Village Resort. Waivers and registration are required for event participation, so stop by the Winterfest tent to sign up and get your wristband. To avoid waiting in line, waivers can be completed on the website in advance. It promises to be a wild and weird weekend ride at the foot of the Sawtooths. “That’s what it’s all about,” says Jeffrey. “Anything but normal.” stanleywinterfest.com PHOTOS COURTESY STANLEY WINTERFEST

WELLNESS | ST. LUKE’S

ENHANCING HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE

Nutrition and lifestyle habits make a difference by Teresa Brennan, RDN, LD, CNSC Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist—St. Luke’s Wood River

Amidst the usual diet resolutions centered on restriction, consider a fresh perspective this year: focus on incorporating a diverse range of nutritional sources to meet your individual needs effectively. PROTEIN INTAKE

Adequate protein intake is crucial for our body’s cellular growth and repair. It facilitates the absorption of amino acids, the building blocks of cells, aiding in the optimal development of muscle fibers. Additionally, consuming sufficient protein promotes hormonal signals of satiety, helping prevent overeating and promoting a feeling of fullness. HYDRATION

Water is vital to keeping our body functioning properly. Maintaining adequate fluid intake, primarily through water consumption, is essential for various bodily functions. Water regulates body temperature, aids in digestion, maintains blood pressure, and facilitates waste removal. Proper hydration supports joint function and enhances physical performance by keeping muscles hydrated. The National Institute for Health generally recommends 9 cups of fluids a day for women and 13 cups for men. High altitude has impacts on hydration. Due to lower air pressure, sweat evaporates more quickly from your skin, reducing a key signal to replenish your hydration. Combined with the low humidity, you need more water to keep yourself properly hydrated. As you go higher, the temperature drops and cold air holds less moisture than warm air. Temperature, activity svpn-mag.com

159

One of the most empowering ventures of meal planning and prepping is that you have the ability to choose the ingredients you’re putting in your body.

level, humidity, how much you sweat, breathing, urine, bowel movements, physical condition, and gender encompass a few of the variables that need to be taken into consideration to ensure adequate hydration. PRE-WORKOUT FUELING

Fueling your body adequately before exercise is crucial. Tailor your pre-workout nutrition based on timing. As a general rule of thumb, if you eat two to three hours before a workout or physical activity, this should “look like” a meal and include a complex carbohydrate (containing starch and fiber), moderate protein, and a healthy fat (example: omelet + sauteed veggies, with whole grain toast and avocado). When eating within one to two hours of a workout, fuel should resemble more of a snack that contains a complex carbohydrate, moderate protein, and lower fat (example: Greek yogurt + berries). If you are in a fasting state or haven’t fueled for two to three hours before a workout, focusing on quick fuel within 30 minutes of activity will yield greater results and put less stress on your body. This fuel is best to include a simple carbohydrate that is digested quickly with little to no fat or fiber (for example, banana). Fuel during a training that lasts over an hour. 160

svpn-mag.com

AVOID OVERTRAINING AND UNDERNOURISHING

Inadequate nourishment during physical “stress” can lead to decreased glycogen stores, irritability, decreased concentration, coordination, training response, muscle strength and performance, and increased risk of injury. Don’t forget a post-workout fuel, ideally within 30 minutes of completing your activity. MEAL PREPARATION STRATEGIES

Meal prepping offers numerous benefits, including increased variety and nutrient-dense food intake, time and cost savings, better portion control, and greater control over ingredients. By utilizing a few meal prep strategies, you are able to save time and money because you can buy ingredients in bulk and freeze extra food for later. You can manage portion sizes more easily. One of the most empowering ventures of meal planning and prepping is that you have the ability to choose the ingredients you’re putting in your body. You’re also likely to gain a few new skills in the kitchen, experiment with some new ingredients, and create a better relationship with food.

WELLNESS | ST. HEADER LUKE’S

Choose your main meals first, and then plan and adapt snacks. Pick a few main staples that include complex carbohydrates and protein sources for the week and enable variations to create different meals and flavors. It’s great to start small and plan and prep two to three meals per week. Utilize herbs/seasonings, fruits, and vegetables to add variety. Although meal prep requires a strategy, it can enable a sense of control and provide the greatest long-term sustainability to dietary adjustments. ADDING PLANT-BASED FOODS

Plant-based foods include fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts. In addition to providing energy and essential micronutrients, these powerhouse foods are packed with fiber and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are also called phytochemicals or antioxidants. These compounds (carotenoids, flavonoids, isoflavones, etc.) provide health benefits by protecting the cellular structure and DNA. This free radical, scavenger-like activity can aid in preventing chronic disease and cancer. SLEEP AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

Improving sleep habits and managing stress are integral components of overall well-being. Establishing a sleep routine, limiting screen time, practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or gentle movement, and consuming antioxidantrich, caffeine-free tea in the evenings can help lower cortisol levels and promote better sleep quality. LET GO OF THE ALL OR NOTHING MENTALIT Y

Nutrition is part of the long game of health and wellness. Make peace with eating to nourish and fuel your body. Practice mindfulness of your overall food intake and avoid villainizing food. The only true bad foods are foods that you are allergic or intolerant to, foods that are expired, poisonous, or taste bad. Beyond that, all foods provide macro and micronutrients. Focusing on the most nutrient-dense forms provides the biggest nutritional benefit to your health and well-being and should encompass a majority of your intake.  It is recommended that you check with your medical provider before beginning a new exercise or dietary routine. To find a doctor or to learn more about our dietitians and clinical nutritional services, contact the Center for Community Health at 208.727.8733 or visit stlukesonline.org.

ST. LUKE’S NEWS NUCLEAR MEDICINE SCANNER St. Luke’s Health System (SLHS) has generously funded $640,000, to cover the base technology of a 32-slice Nuclear Medicine Spect CT. In order to have the ability to provide advanced imaging for stroke and trauma patients and to begin to offer most Spect nuclear medicine scans, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has committed an additional $660,000 to upgrade to the most advanced technology, a 64-slice Nuclear Medicine Spect CT. The funding is made possible through the kindness and generosity of the community to best serve the needs of the Wood River Valley. The Nuclear Medicine scanner creates a 64-slice high-resolution anatomical image to form a threedimensional view of a patient’s anatomy. “This is the only 64-slice nuclear medicine Spect CT that can serve as a nuclear camera and also serve as a backup CT unit, with the same diagnostic and quality abilities as our current scanner,” explains Kandis Pedersen, Director of Imaging Services at the SLWR. “For stroke patients, each minute counts for the patient outcome. Having the ability to have a backup scanner here is paramount so the patient can have the best outcome possible.” Dr. Brock Bemis, Medical Director of SLWR Emergency Department and an emergency physician, adds, “This enhanced CT capacity helps with quick decision-making for emergency patients in the case of a multiple patient trauma or a stroke. We couldn’t be more excited for this advanced imaging technology, which will also serve as a second CT scanner machine, doubling the hospital’s capacity for care.” Pedersen says, “This will be the first 64-slice Nuclear Medicine Spect CT in Idaho. It will allow us to keep most of our nuclear medicine patients here who require Spect imaging for their nuclear studies. Currently, many patients, including those with cancer for whom travel is difficult, have to go to Twin or Boise for these scans. When patients receive care closer to home, it reduces the total cost of care and leads to better experiences and outcomes. This will elevate the level of care available to the residents and visitors of the Wood River Valley.” To learn more or make a gift, contact Betsy Mullins, Development Manager, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, at mullinse@slhs.org or 208.727.8419.

The AMIT work balances the neuromuscular system and indirectly benefits hormones and cortisol levels.

162

svpn-mag.com

WELLNESS | CENTER Vasper technology can increase testosterone and growth hormone significantly, while decreasing nighttime cortisol. 20 minute sessions 2-3x/week.

BALANCING HORMONES Dr. Molly Brown offers remedies and solutions In the quest for optimal health, the harmonious balance of hormones is not just beneficial, it’s essential. Depleted and imbalanced hormones lead to aging; balanced hormones keep you young, vital, and strong. These intricate biochemical messengers are the conductors of our body’s symphony, influencing vital functions. When in balance, hormones contribute to our energy, strength, metabolism, and outward radiance. Conversely, when imbalanced, they can precipitate weight gain, fatigue, mood swings, and a general decline in vitality and libido. This intricate balance is under our direct influence. Hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, thyroid, and cortisol demand a precise balance for men and women. Contemporary lifestyles have led to an alarming shift in these levels, with cortisol and estrogen levels surging while testosterone plummets, reaching levels in young men today that were typical of much older men in the past. This decline can be attributed to factors such as obesity, lifestyle habits, substance abuse, including alcohol and marijuana, and environmental toxins, as well as pesticides that disrupt hormone levels.

The consumption of organic foods is a fundamental step for healthy hormones. Pesticides decrease testosterone and elevate estrogen in men and women. Not only do men need testosterone, but women do, too. Strength and stress hormones, namely testosterone, growth hormone, and cortisol, need careful modulation. Elevated estrogen can accrue body fat and suppress muscle-building hormones, leading to undesirable effects: increased body fat, muscle loss, poor mood, low energy, and brain fog. Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” rises with increased stress, inadequate sleep, and emotional turbulence. Balancing hormones begins with the brain. Through QNRT, we address underlying stress and trauma that disrupt hormonal equilibrium. By identifying and resetting the nervous system, QNRT facilitates a healing process leading to restoration of hormonal balance and lowering cortisol by resetting the brain’s response to stress, thereby reducing the overproduction of stress hormones, which disrupts the entire endocrine system. svpn-mag.com

163

WELLNESS | CENTER Neurofeedback balances the brain, reducing stress and increasing cognitive efficiency.

Balancing hormones begins with the brain. Neurofeedback complements this by training the brain towards optimal efficiency. This biofeedback method uses real-time displays of brain activity to train the brain to efficiency, thereby lowering stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels. Neurofeedback improves stress resilience, sleep quality, creativity, cognitive efficiency, and mental clarity and reduces stress, anxiety, confusion, and cognitive inefficiency. Introducing the Vasper system has markedly enhanced our hormonal treatment outcomes. With just two sessions per week over six to eight weeks, studies have shown a significant increase in testosterone and HGH and a decrease in nighttime cortisol. Vasper’s method utilizes compression, cooling, and grounding therapy with low impact moderate exercise to stimulate anabolic hormones conducive to repair and well-being. Sessions are 20 minutes. Moreover, combining the Vasper system with Live O2 facilitates an even better result. The Live O2 system utilizes adaptive contrast therapy to improve oxygen delivery throughout the body and deep into the cells, blood, and plasma, bolstering cellular function, clearing inflammation, and optimizing all bodily processes. Lastly, I advocate a specific cold plunge therapy: threeminute cold plunge, followed by 15 minutes of moderate exercise and 15 minutes sauna session. This regimen has been linked to increases in testosterone, brown fat regulation (which regulates the nervous system, thyroid, and organ/glandular integrity), decreases inflammation, and improves circulation and temperature regulation. The cold plunge will increase endorphins by 200% for four to six hours. Integrating the above techniques creates a synergistic effect addressing hormonal imbalances from multiple angles. This approach not only targets the physical aspects 164

svpn-mag.com

of hormonal imbalances but also the emotional and mental factors that cause the hormone imbalance to begin with and offers a comprehensive and individualized treatment protocol for effective resolution. Healthy hormone balance is a fantastic accomplishment and readily achievable. When your “strengthening” hormones are high, you feel terrific, vital, full of energy, radiant, magnetic, and happy. Achieving hormonal balance is multifaceted and, as with anything, requires innovative techniques and a personalized approach. Proper health, better than you ever thought possible, leads to high energy, feelings of well-being and happiness, clarity, positive connection, and requires intention, conscious thought, commitment, and innovation. Balanced hormones give you an edge and advantage in life and lead to this state. 

THE SAGE BARNES VISION An interview on the Bloom series art and style

Sage Barnes at work in his studio in Kansas City, Missouri.

176

svpn-mag.com

FINE ARTS | SAGE BARNES

Sage Barnes is a contemporary artist whose visionary appeal emerges from the ability to combine realism, abstraction, and street art to create an aesthetic that is uniquely his own. Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Barnes’s Bloom series combines his fresh approach to satire through his technique and visual awareness, often self-explanatory. Through contrast, Barnes blurs the line between surrealism and authenticity while examining reality or a present existence. With an appeal of interplay, Barnes can capture attention and raw expression without losing beauty through his method and approach with acrylic spray, resin, and a wrapped canvas. Read about Barnes’s approach to his Bloom series in a Q&A with SVPN Magazine about his process and experience. svpn-mag.com

FINE ARTS | SAGE BARNES

SVPN Magazine: What inspired your new series,

and how does it differ from earlier works? SAGE BARNES: This series is titled Bloom and is more or less inspired by growth. All of the pieces in this series have multiple layers of clear resin and paint. It alludes to the different stages we encounter during periods of growth. Some are messy, some neat, some dark or bright, but all are essential to make up the bigger picture. The resin is transparent, so I use it to act as a way to look back and reflect. Many of my other works focus on identity and sense of self, whereas these highlight how we got there. SVPN: Describe the techniques and materials that you

use. How do they vary from your previous projects? SB: It’s a large mix of materials, anything from acrylic to spray paint to pastel, but the stand-out medium is resin. It’s a clear epoxy mixture that seals each layer of paint. It suspends it in time, which is an important feature because it feels like some moments in life we’d like to hang on to. Like a flower in Bloom, we tend to want that moment to last forever. SVPN: What symbolism is present in these pieces,

and how does it contrast with your other pieces? SB: I try not to talk too much about direct symbolism in the works, but the other works were strictly figurative, so they held the viewer’s hand a bit more while viewing. When you’re dealing with subjects in action like my other works did, the lens gets narrowed down quickly about what’s happening in the work. The Bloom works are more abstract, where the viewer has more room to think and reflect. It’s interesting to hear a wide array of feedback and opinions on the work because the style asks a little more from the viewer in terms of interaction. SVPN: What were the most significant challenges

and rewards in creating these works compared to your past work? SB: The biggest challenge was definitely in the execution. Many of my previous works were strictly figurative and predetermined, so the idea was the most significant part, and then you paint until it’s done. The Bloom works are more abstract and require constant communication with the pieces. It’s more organic and demands your full attention, mentally and physically. It’s almost like a dance. “The Bloom works are more abstract and require constant communication with the pieces. It’s more organic and demands your full attention, mentally and physically. It’s almost like a dance.” —Sage Barnes

You’re finding a rhythm and confidence with the piece while trying not to step on each other’s toes. These works had a learning curve because you have to just let go. That was a bit intimidating at the beginning. There’s not much room to think. You must do it because it’s over once you’ve lost the present moment. So, most of the time, the reward was just me not throwing the canvas across the room out of frustration. SVPN: How does this series reflect the evolution

of your artistic style? SB: This series taught me more than I ever would’ve imagined. As I said, this series deals with concepts of growth, and I think this series was crucial to challenge me in a way I hadn’t been challenged before. With my older work, there’s a lot of room to overanalyze every detail because it doesn’t affect the work from a technical standpoint. These pieces are at the opposite end of that spectrum. It forced me to leave my head and be present with the work. SVPN: What reactions do you hope to evoke in viewers

with this series, and how is that different from your previous work? SB: Honestly, throughout my work, I always hope the work makes some internal connection with the viewer. Maybe that sounds naive and underwhelming, but if they can connect with or see themselves or their lives in the work, that is the highest compliment I can ask for. I can talk all day about ‘this means this, that symbolizes that,’ but there is no replacing that instinctual feeling of looking at something and thinking, ‘I like this, but I don’t know why yet.’ That’s the kind of connection that a description from the artist could never create.

Bloom series works by Sage Barnes are currently on exhibition at the Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery.  Sun Valley Contemporary Gallery 320 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.450.2247 sunvalleyart.com svpn-mag.com

Fresh Bales By Eric Thompson Egg tempera on panel 12” x 12”

Eric Thompson is an entirely self-taught artist who is newly residing in Fairview, Utah. At 52, he’s had the pleasure of being represented in museums all over the country and featured in publications including American Art Collector and Southwest Art, winning awards with local and international salons. Thompson has studied the masters to develop the fine art of oil, the unforgivable watercolor, and the dying art of egg tempera, an old-world medium that few are able to master due to its difficulty and nuance. Like the characters of the objects, figures, and houses Thompson paints, his technique has been refined through life experience. He paints from his travels and the treasures

discovered along the way and chooses his medium based on the mood he wishes to convey. James Moore’s unique three-dimensional wall-mounted sculptures feature wildlife in bronze on travertine mounts. They are an original alternative to a painting, and his work captures a blend of realism and abstraction in a collage of elements that form a vignette of the animal and its environment. The exhibition will also feature life-size and tabletop sculpture by Montana artist Ott Jones. 271 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.726.5512 kneelandgallery.com svpn-mag.com

John Westmark On the Fold Using delicate paper sewing patterns applied directly to canvas, Westmark creates strong female protagonists, often stoic martyrs, fantastical beings, or the hapless “everywoman.” Westmark embellishes the garment patterns with custom text inspired by feminist writing, creating a conceptual narrative alongside the existing assembly instructions to complete the familiar dialogue presented to women throughout history. The viewer is asked to read the text-embedded surface and the pictorial 182

narrative as a whole to disrupt the stereotypical notion of “women’s work” in order to create a feminist dialogue in the visual conversation. Westmark says, “My ongoing education about gender comparisons, inequality, and the ever-shifting ground of feminist politics fuels my interest in this body of work. As I continue to push the Double Bind work forward and continue to use the paper sewing patterns, I want to project a metaphorical weight within each painting’s implied narrative.”

Joanne Freeman These Days Abstract painter Joanne Freeman does not rely on direct observation but rather on process and precedence. The title These Days, borrowed from the song written by Jackson Browne in the late 1960s, conjured up comparisons to her own state of mind during her daily studio practice, where the realities and upheavals of the external world collide with the inner workings and

solitude of her studio. The reductive abstract paintings are about the beauty of singular color, the impact of pure abstract forms, and the quiet order that cuts through the noise. Freeman says, “My paintings and drawings reference forms found in architecture and design. I create compositions based on loose geometry and layered saturated colors. The hardedge process of cutting shapes and layering color onto treated raw linen recalls qualities of midcentury low-tech graphics, colorfield painting, and collage.” svpn-mag.com

Reflecting Oystercatchers By Ewoud de Groot Oil on canvas 28” x 55”

Best of the West Broschofsky Galleries features historic and contemporary works by gallery artists, including new paintings by Ewoud de Groot. While most wildlife artists paint their subject matter in an attempt at photorealism, de Groot takes a more unique approach to his painting by adding elements of abstraction. To him, a good painting is about exploring all the different facets of composition, color, and technique. While de Groot considers himself a figurative painter, he attempts to find a balance and tension between abstract settings and realism in his subjects. It could be said that he is on the frontier between figurative and non-figurative or in the gray area between traditional and modern. Other artist’s works showing include Edward Curtis’s photographs from 1898-1928, Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Russell Chatham, Jan Grotenbreg, Kollabs, William Matthews, Gordon McConnell, Ken Peloke, Theodore Villa, Andy Warhol, and David Yarrow.

OCHI Cooper Cox Out Here

Out Here by Cooper Cox exhibition installations at OCHI in Ketchum, Idaho.

OCHI presents Out Here, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Cooper Cox. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. From a young age, Cooper Cox harbored a fascination with trees, often sketching them in the margins of his schoolbooks. Allured by their elegant forms and endurance, as well as by their symbiotic relationships with neighboring organisms, Cox’s newest paintings feature snags—large, coniferous, upright trees that appear lifeless but serve as essential habitats for wildlife long after losing their leaves and flowers. Like the first line in a charcoal drawing, snags appear exposed, revealing the history of their growth as slow, incremental adjustments rather than sudden change. Snags symbolize strength and adaptability— having survived shifting climates and human interventions, and Cox’s snags can occasionally bloom soulful blossoms that reflect senescence’s emotional and physical changes.

hillsides that bear snags and regrowth. Born and raised in Sun Valley, Cox draws inspiration from these sublime scenes; the paintings in Out Here celebrate Cox’s origins and his resilience and rejuvenation. Rendered in paint and passion, the tension between nostalgia and spiritual growth in Cox’s paintings invites introspection and transcendent hope.

In proximity to dramatic landscapes like the Sawtooth Range and Craters of the Moon, the spruce-fir forests of Sun Valley, Idaho, are replete with dense greenery and wildfire-scarred

Through Kindler’s discerning lens, these visuals are recontextualized and layered with her own iconography to create original compositions. Kindler invites us to take a closer look at the beauty of the surfaces around us and employ our imagination to discover the hidden stories within ourselves. Berkeley Hoerr Ketchum in Color Berkeley Hoerr’s second solo exhibition at Gail Severn Gallery features lively scenes of Ketchum, Idaho, that are dear to locals and visitors alike. Hoerr captures the unique spirit of this beloved ski town, imbuing character into her illustrations of iconic establishments and charming depictions of the dog park on a bluebird day. Paintings include epic views of Bald Mountain, as well as close-ups of the snowcats that keep the trails in tip-top shape. The artist depicts these inspired scenes in technicolor using her own distinctive style in a way that brings them to life.

Robert McCauley A continuation of Robert McCauley’s solo exhibition of new paintings inspired by his Native American artifact collection will remain on view for the month of February. Over the last 35 years, McCauley has expertly honed his depictions of Western wildlife, such as salmon, trout, bears, deer, and moose. Though his style is rooted in the tradition of 19th-century American Romanticism, his narratives are contemporary, timely, and relevant. McCauley addresses themes and issues of cultures in collision, environmental ethics, and humankind’s impact on other species.

Sun Valley Museum of Art Bodies of Work: Art & Healing Through March 23, 2024

Bodies of Work: Art & Healing is a group exhibition that features artwork by contemporary artists who have used their artistic practice as a way of exploring and processing their own experience of medical illness and the experiences of others. Through the art of contemporary artists Katherine Shaughnessy, Heather Watkins, Dylan Mortimer, Estelle L. Roberge, Katherine Sherwood, and Renée Stout, Bodies of Work takes viewers on a journey of healing through art. 190

The arts have long served as powerful medicine for both mind and body. At the beginning of the 20th century, tuberculosis patients at sanatoria often participated in structured arts and crafts programs. Wounded soldiers recuperating during World War II were taught “lap crafts,” such as beading and embroidery, as part of their medical therapy. And many artists have made their practices an essential part of their personal healing.

Jeff Juhlin Over the course of his 40-year career, Jeff Juhlin has spent a great deal of time studying western landscapes. His mixed media works consist of layers of paper, ink, paint, and wax—both cold and encaustic. They are records of time, like the landscapes he has long gone to for inspiration. Juhlin says, “My work seeks to reflect a sense of stillness, space, and the visual history of time evident in the western landscape... In this environment, time often reveals itself in the form of rock strata created by erosion, wind, and water, both built up over eons and worn away by the elements in a continuous process... Typically, I reveal layers of translucent strata composed of pigmented wax, oil, paper, cold wax, and other media that are built up and worn away in the storied layers of the creative process.”

The gallery will also feature a selection of monotypes from the Aurobora studio archive, including works by Lisa Williamson, Pia Fries, and Richmond Burton.

PIONEER SALOON Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

DINING GUIDE

THE SAWTOOTH CLUB Always busy with a fun mix of locals and visitors alike, The Sawtooth Club has been downtown Ketchum’s most beloved destination for dining and cocktails since the days when Ernest Hemingway himself was a regular there. Nowadays, the place is more popular than ever with an inspired menu offering a mouthwatering blend of creative small plates to share, grilled steaks, chops and ribs, healthy vegetarian dishes, fresh seafood, unique pasta bowls, nightly specials and much more. In the bar enjoy handcrafted cocktails, 18 wines by the glass, and 12 ice-cold craft brews on tap. Dinner offerings this winter include fresh Idaho trout, filet mignon, linguine with clams, chicken Senegalese, mesquite rack of lamb, grilled ribeye steak, fresh steelhead salmon, butternut squash ravioli, barbeque baby back ribs, vegan and gluten-free sesame noodle bowl, Waygu beef meatloaf, New Orleans shellfish pasta, roasted free-range chicken, fresh steamer clams, seared ahi salad, awesome burgers and sandwiches, to name just a few.

DAILY BAR: 4:30PM DINING ROOM: 5PM 231 N Main St Ketchum 208.726.5233 sawtoothclub.com

All of our grilling is done over a live mesquite-wood fire. We do not use processed charcoal or wood chips, only authentic mesquite logs from Texas. This method of natural wood cooking generates the intense heat that sears in the flavorful juices and imparts a variety of subtle tastes and aromas to meat, poultry, and seafood. An award-winning wine list complements the wonderful food, and winter evenings around the large central fireplace are not to be missed. One visit and you’ll know why The Sawtooth Club has repeatedly been voted the “Valley’s Best Overall Restaurant and The Valley’s Best Bar!”

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s

Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. Your meal will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
