Welcoming Makenzie Callaghan We are excited to share that the SRRE team is growing with the addition of Makenzie Callaghan! Born and raised in the Wood River Valley, Makenzie—or “Mak”—brings a deep understanding of the local market and what it means to call our community “home.” She started her career in operations and logistics, primarily for ecommerce startup companies (where her shoe shopping addiction first began…). Her hands-on approach helped scale multiple businesses and take them global. After 11 years living and working in New Zealand and Australia, Makenzie has returned to Ketchum to continue her career and build professional relationships across our close-knit community. She is eager to learn more about the industry and sees her experience as a longterm resident of Blaine County as a strength within the Stephanie Reed Real Estate team. stephanie-reed.com

EDITOR’S WELCOME

Gallery. We learned about her aspirations for appealing to a new generation of art collectors and the virtual world of owning art. It’s a fascinating read. Friesen + Lantz’s latest exhibition, Zoonotic Tonic, featuring the works of Mia Brownell, is not only personal to Lantz, but also shows how Brownell’s art encourages the world to pay attention to food and science simultaneously. In addition, we have a beautiful Now Showing section in this issue to inspire some in-person gallery time with many new exhibitions and artists to see.

COMING BACK TO THE WORLD I am sure that I am not alone when I have blurted out that I have had enough of the pandemic and want my life back on several occasions. Are we ready? If so, what better way to connect and enjoy each other in person again than at the 2022 Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF). SVFF has a very special place in my heart. I have seen something that started with a conversation in West Ketchum over 11 years ago become a full-fledged film festival and cultural event that people mark on their calendars to attend. What I love most about this event is its grit. Surviving every curveball of the pandemic, it remained strong and with purpose without losing its footing or its boutique approach. With open arms, the SVFF team is offering a wide range of independent films, including shorts, dramas, comedies, documentaries, and so much more, including a new After Hours Slate and plenty of parties that only SVFF can host. Vision Award Honorees Amy Poehler and Woody Harrelson are just a few of the exciting guests who will attend and share their stories and SVFF’s Coffee Talks. A 32-page section in this month’s issue covers all the juicy tidbits, films, people, and more about this year’s festival plans. So, join the community and experience SVFF—watch a movie, attend a party, listen to a talk, watch virtual, share your own story, and create some new ones. Also in this spring issue of SVPN Magazine, we chatted with Yanna Lantz, the new owner of the Friesen + Lantz 38

svpn-mag.com

In an ongoing series to feature Sun Valley interior designers and decorators, SVPN Magazine visits Marina Broschofsky at Red Door Home + Design and learns how Marina created her business and her unique approach to style and design. Marina gives us some insider tips too! Also, we have more picks and selects from Sun Valley decorators and designers in Style Dial. After a cold winter, SVPN Magazine went to our Wellness contributors for some advice on how to take care of our bodies and minds to “spring” into action. From Dr. Molly Brown and St. Luke’s, we have timeless advice on how to take care of our stress and health. In addition, we provide an overview for some cleansing thoughts and ideas that you can take part in at GLOW or do on your own—any little bit helps as we enter the world again and maybe need to get back in shape from top to bottom and inside and out. Some other reads in this issue include Stanley in the spring (there’s more to do than you may realize), and we have gathered some spring announcements, events, and happenings for Arts Etc. and News and Views. In addition, the Sun Valley Restaurant Association offers some of the area’s best choices for dining all in one place. Here at SVPN Magazine, we are excited about spring and look forward to summer. We are ready for it, so hit us up when we return to you in June. In the meantime, take care and stay safe and healthy, and be mindful of others.

COLDWELL BANKER Skiing has been a passion of mine since I fell over a rope tow at 10 years old and received a nasty rope burn on my side, I was immediately hooked! I have been a ski instructor for many years now and a real estate agent for 23. My happy place is training in a ski clinic with national professionals from other areas and being able to pass the knowledge on to the guests I coach. When not on the hill, I enjoy showing property and getting to know different people in order to find the ideal home for them. It’s easy to explain what makes a home so special as I live, eat and breathe the lifestyle every day!

SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR KRISTIN POOLE TO RETIRE After 25 years of arts leadership, Kristin Poole will retire from the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA) to continue on as a consultant. In addition, SVMoA announces the Kristin Poole Fund for Program Innovation. Poole will serve as SVMoA’s Artistic and Project Outreach Consultant through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition for new executive leadership and to complete some projects that are in the works, including DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) initiatives. “It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve this community,” says Poole. “I have been so fortunate to work with inspired colleagues, thoughtful patrons, and brilliant artists, but most importantly to witness first-hand—truly on a daily basis—how art provides hope and perspective. Having just celebrated our 50th anniversary, this is the perfect moment to engage new leadership at The Museum. I look forward to welcoming a new voice to the community.” During Poole’s 25-year tenure as Artistic Director of SVMoA, the organization has significantly expanded its educational outreach programs, including effective programs for the Valley’s K-12 grade students. In addition, she developed the BIG IDEA multidisciplinary approach to programming, emulated by museums throughout the U.S., and led collaborative partnerships with local organizations and internationally celebrated artists. In her honor, SVMoA is establishing the Kristin Poole Fund for Program Innovation: a fund to support ambitious projects that expand the reach of SVMoA, creating new opportunities for important artists, attracting non-traditional audiences to The Museum, or introducing art about place—both inside and outside the museum space. 78

svpn-mag.com

Ellen Gillespie, SVMoA Board President, noted Poole’s significant contribution to the arts, stating, “We’re sad to see Kristin step down but are grateful for her outstanding work over the last 25 years. She has helped put Sun Valley on the map as an arts destination. In addition, she is leaving the organization in strong fiscal health with an ambitious strategic plan in place and an enormously competent staff. We wish her well in her next chapter and are grateful for her continued work as a consultant.” SVMoA’s board is currently engaged in a search for new executive leadership. Interviews are underway, and the board hopes to select a new Executive Director by June. If that is not the case, current staff and board will assume administrative responsibilities, and programming staff will work with Poole to manage their ongoing projects. “We’re proud to have highly qualified, longstanding programmatic staff who will continue their great work in commitment to SVMoA’s mission,” says Gillespie. “We have complete faith in them and are so grateful for their talents and passion for the arts.” The Kristin Poole Fund for Program Innovation, established as of February 25, 2022, will support artist, audience, and access advancement, risk-taking, art in non-traditional spaces or with non-traditional approaches, ideas about place, and connections with new audiences.  svmoa.org

LEAN INTO SPRING In Stanley

Bikes line up at the Mountain Village Resort.

By Lori Williams

If you’ve been hibernating, now is the time to get out and trek up to the Sawtooth Valley to breathe in the magnificence of the spring thaw. The vitamin D is always plentiful in Stanley, and best yet—it’s too early for mosquitoes. Though March hangs on to the snow piles and the nights are still frigid, the equinox signals the grand elegance of mountain-high regeneration. Winter begins to fade under the warmth of longer days, meaning more extended play. Nature stirs with migrating birds and frolicking ungulates. In March, there is still time to snowshoe in the backcountry as warmer days and cold nights firm up the snow. You might even strap your steelhead fishing gear to your back. Hiking in April and May makes for glorious photography as many alpine lakes are still frozen and snow crowns the high peaks. Mountain meadows in mid-May come alive with wildflowers strutting colors to match the sunsets. It’s a glorious time to be visiting the Sawtooth Mountains, and Mountain Village Resort (MVR) awaits you as a base camp to indulge in it all, be it adventure or quiet respite. 80

svpn-mag.com

CREATING A LEGACY IN SUN VALLEY WITH ERIK BOE Robertson Stephens Wealth Management Managing Director, Principal Erik Boe assists high-net-worth families, charitable foundations, and business owners navigate every corner of wealth preservation and growth. In an in-depth Q&A, Erik offers SVPN Magazine readers some insight into today’s investment management and his own thoughts on the Wood River Valley and its future. SVPN: What brought you to Sun Valley, and when did

you move here?

EB: I moved here in 1993, the day after my college

graduation. Ketchum has always been a natural extension for many folks from Seattle, and our family was no exception. My parents came here for their honeymoon in 1965, and while growing up, we continued to come to the area. When my dad passed away from cancer before my senior year of college, my sister was already living in Ketchum, starting the famous KB’s Burritos, and my mom decided to move here shortly after. I was on my way to Telluride, Colorado, but only made it as far as Ketchum and never left! SVPN: What have you been doing professionally over the

nearly 30 years that you’ve been living here?

EB: My theory was, and still is, to pick where you want to

be and THEN figure out your career path. This was always my approach, and I have zero regrets. My first job out of college was timber framing for Storey Construction, building amazing houses in the Valley with a fantastic crew. One weekend, I was camping up in Iron Creek and met some people conducting a biological evaluation on the Sawtooth National Forest. I explained that I had taken some forestry 82

classes for my environmental science minor, and the next thing I knew, I had a job offer. Using aerial photography, our job was to find a pinhole every 2,000 acres over the entire forest and conduct a 360-degree biological survey of the area. We walked from Fairfield to The Frank Church over the course of six months, which got me into the best shape of my life. Afterward, I landed a job at Power Engineers in Hailey in their environmental division. I spent the next five years doing environmental compliance and permitting PHOTO BY STEVE DONDERO

huge linear projects across everything from federal lands, highway rights-ofway, private land, etc. For example, we designed, permitted, and built a fiberoptic network from Dallas to Seattle. By the late ‘90s, around the dot.com bubble era, I became interested in the stocks of the publicly traded companies who were our clients. It was then that I made the jump to wealth management, and the rest is history. SVPN: Why did you join Robertson

Stephens at this point in your career? EB: It’s simple. Our clients and my

team outgrew the previous platform. Many of our clients demand a more sophisticated approach to investments and a more robust technology platform all executed within a fiduciary manner. Robertson Stephens came to the table with a very simple but important premise ‘as customers of wealth management, there simply HAS to be a better solution.’ For example, if a client owns things like real estate, private equity, even art, why shouldn’t they be able to track these assets as I do my traditional equity and fixed income investments? Well, the answer is they should! So when I was presented with Robertson Stephens’ approach to address the changing needs of high net worth clientele, the decision wasn’t hard. SVPN: What are your most proud of that

you do outside of work?

EB: Outside of family, I am passionate

about philanthropy, particularly in the areas surrounding the Wood River Valley and Stanley Basin. This Valley is facing some real headwinds regarding certain unprecedented, secular trends. This not only includes issues such as affordable housing but also other issues that have yet to be understood more broadly. For example, in my view, water will be one of the most significant issues that we face in the future. The Wood River is not a large enough watershed to support an undeniably rising population. Remember, we are a ‘high desert’ community, as evidenced by the fact that when

you look out the window, you see more sagebrush than sub-alpine firs, which comes with significant challenges as global warming increases. We need to come together as a community to understand and address these issues head-on. SVPN: How are you involved in the Valley’s philanthropy? EB: It was always a dream of mine to be a part of creating

a community foundation that could help support the great services that many of our non-profits provide. I remember someone from Aspen once said, ‘you guys are so far behind in Sun Valley, you’re ahead! You’re almost RETRO up there.’ He was referring to the fact that we hadn’t screwed up Sun Valley yet. In my opinion, ensuring that our nonprofit sector is robust gives us the best chance to not screw it up. A friend approached me about the foundation he was creating called the Spur Community Foundation. When he asked me to be the founding Treasurer of Spur, I jumped at the opportunity. We’re in the process of raising millions of dollars for Blaine County non-profits, further emphasizing measurable results from the contributions our donors make. I’m very proud of our accomplishments. I would encourage folks to check out spurfoundation.org or give a call. Simply put, if you are spending, for example, 50% of your time here, would you consider giving 50% of your philanthropic dollars to our local non-profit sector? It’s essential to the long-term sustainability of our community. SVPN: Any parting shots? EB: Sure! For most of us, we moved or visited here from

somewhere. I recall when I was 23, I was walking into one of our legendary watering holes, and two tough-looking cowboys walked up to me and said, ‘where you from, kid?’ I looked at them and said, ‘Seattle.’ They said, ‘well, have a good time … just don’t be a punk. See what you can bring to this place other than take from it.’ That always stuck with me. If we all think about what we can give versus what we can get, this place will always be special. 

SVFF WELCOMES YOU BACK March 30 – April 3, 2022

Emily Granville and Teddy Grennan

Josh and Candice Pate

“Remember this Festival as it is now, ‘cause it’s gonna be big,” said Jodie Foster to a packed house at Ketchum’s old nexStage Theatre in 2013. Looking back, it’s hard to believe that it has been ten years since the inception of the Sun Valley Film Festival. The year was 2012, and Teddy had decamped to Sun Valley for the summer to write a script that had just been put in turnaround. While talking with producer Jim Burke, Jim asked, “Why doesn’t Sun Valley have a film festival?” In Teddy’s mind, the seed was planted. That first year was tough, but the bones were there from the start. We had amazing films like War Elephants, a production of National Geographic and longtime SVFF supporter, Greg Carr. There was our Festival HQ, Coffee Talks, the Awards Bash at the Roosevelt, and Cristina’s catering. A little bit of Hollywood, a lot of Sun Valley. And, by the second year, more people got on board, including Candice. With hard-won lessons under our belt and Candice at the helm, things started to fall into place. In 2013, we launched the SVSLab—our first foray into what would be a number of programs aimed at PHOTOS BY COCO KNUDSON

supporting emerging voices in film. And then in 2015, Clint Eastwood and patrons Rick and Kimberly Selby helped us launch the Vision Dinner. Before we had the state-of-the-art Argyros Performing Arts Center as a venue, we brought in a mobile luxury theater, the Cinetransformer, which was the site of our sold-out late-night screening of Get Out with Allison Williams. In 2018, we took over Main Street and Sun Valley Road and launched our SVFF Street Party, adding a rail-jam to the mix a year later.

As the years went by, the Festival flourished, developing a solid and authentic reputation as a boutique film festival in a blue-chip mountain town. Throughout the last decade and now, into our next, Sun Valley sits firmly at the heart and soul of this Festival. Something about the intimate size and scale of the town, the laid-back, inclusive attitude of the people, the stunning natural backdrop — all of it — make this Festival special. Jodie Foster asked us to remember the magic of the Festival back when it was small. Now, ten years later, we celebrate both its reach and its intimacy. The things we loved about the Festival then are what we continue to build upon and celebrate as we look to the future. We hope you’ll join us. See you at the movies. —Candice & Teddy svpn-mag.com

2022 VISION AWARD HONOREE

WOODY HARRELSON on work and comedy

By Sabina Dana Plasse

svpn-mag.com

“I try and pick work that appeals to my heart.” —Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson’s career reveals a impressive spectrum of unique characters in film, television, and on the stage. His ability to be so diverse and appeal to many generations is due to his uncanny ability to focus inently on each role he plays, even when they range over such a wide variety of characters. From his portrayal of a casualty notification officer, opposite Ben Foster, in Oren Moverman’s The Messenger, which garnered him a 2010 Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor, to his nomination by the Academy, the Golden Globes®, and SAG Awards® in the category of Best Actor for his portrayal of controversial magazine publisher Larry Flynt in Milos Forman’s The People vs. Larry Flynt, there’s not much Woody cannot do. “I feel very fortunate that I have had amazing projects come my way,” says Harrelson. “The one that I am most excited about the film I just finished with Bobby Farrelly in Winnipeg called Champions. All the characters and the people I was able to work with were just phenomenal. I try and pick work that appeals to my heart.” Some of Harrelson’s most memorable roles, for those of us who are Gen-Xers, include being a member of the ensemble cast of NBC’s long-running hit comedy, Cheers, where he played the affable bartender ‘Woody Boyd,’ which earned him a Primetime Emmy® in 1988. He was nominated four additional times during his eight-year run on the show. In 1999, he gained another Primetime Emmy® nomination when he reprised the role in a guest appearance on the spin-off series Frasier. For decades, Harrelson has done his share of comedy, and he enjoys making people laugh. “We all need to laugh,” he says. “Often, I am laughing the hardest.” Harrelson has worked with some of the best actors and directors in the entertainment business throughout his career. He also wrote, directed, produced, and starred in an unprecedented live feature film, Lost in London, broadcast

live into theaters nationwide on January 19, 2017. The comedy also stars Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson. Harrelson also co-starred with Matthew McConaughey in HBO’s True Detective. He was nominated for Emmy® and SAG Awards® in the lead actor category and a Golden Globes Award for lead actor in a mini series and deservedly so. In 2012 Harrelson starred opposite Julianne Moore and Ed Harris in the HBO film Game Change, for which he earned Primetime Emmy®, SAG Awards®, and Golden Globe® nominations for his role as Steve Schmidt, and Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths, alongside Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell, and Christopher Walken. “I always try and follow what’s on the page,” he says. “But it’s the story that inspires me, and certainly the most important component to any film is the director. Years ago, I took five years off, and I did some plays and learned to appreciate the work I do. I didn’t realize that when I was a child playing on the playground with other kids playacting that it would eventually be my real job.” The titles are endless in Harrelson’s career, including Rampart with director Oren Moverman, Ruben Fleischer’s box office hit, Zombieland as well as the 2019 sequel Zombieland: Double Tap, Out of the Furnace starring opposite Christian Bale and Casey Affleck, The Hunger Games film series, and let’s not forget No Country For Old Men, Natural Born Killers, and White Men Can’t Jump. Harrelson was also recently seen as the on-screen host for director Pete McGrain’s powerful political documentary Ethos. Coming up for Harrelson is the release of Columbia Pictures’ action-comedy The Man From Toronto starring opposite Kevin Hart and directed by Patrick Hughes. Even with such a busy and expansive career, Woody is thrilled about coming to Sun Valley because he believes that film festivals matter. “It’s been a while since I have been to a film festival,” he says. “I’m incredibly excited about Sun Valley. I have had great times in there. I love it and am looking forward to returning, hanging out with Bobby, and seeingAmy Poehler.”  Woody Harrelson is a Vision Award Honoree and will appear as an SVFF Coffee Talk guest. svpn-mag.com

IT TAKES A VALLEY

In ten years, SVFF has become an acclaimed boutique film festival

By Sabina Dana Plasse

In the summer of 2011, Teddy Grennan and I first met at Marion Constable’s house in West Ketchum, and he said to me, “I want to start a film festival in Sun Valley.” I said, “Let’s do it!” Ten years later, the Sun Valley Film Festival (SVFF) has not only become the most celebrated spring event in the Wood River Valley but it’s also revered as one of the most exciting boutique film festivals to attend. It didn’t happen overnight, but over the years, many people have put in a great deal of effort to create the cultural entity that has become SVFF. Trying to avoid being front-page news at the premiere of the ski film Winter’s Wind directed by Matt Herringer from an impromptu Magic Lantern Cinema’s alley party with cast, crew, and most of Teton Gravity Research’s staff is what happened during the first SVFF opening night in 2012. From there, it was the wall-to-wall crowds at The Roosevelt, now the Warfield Distillery & Brewery, where the alcohol ran out. And, to end year one, a small awards event gathering outside in Ketchum Town Square celebrated its first winners. SVFF was meant to be. Grennan launched the first Coffee Talks in the Magic Lantern and followed the Screenwriters Lab and High Scribe Award in the nexStage Theatre now, the Argyros Performing Arts Center. Many other awards and prizes were

created by Grennan, not only to inspire Idaho filmmakers but also to foster talent from everywhere. Support came from everyone, big and small, and continues to grow every year. We watched careers rocket like with the short film Crawl Space and chose Oscar award-winning films from filmmakers Freida Lee Mock and Terry Sanders, always with the goal of supporting independent film in Sun Valley. Today, with Grennan still leading the charge and under the leadership of Festival Director Candice Pate, who elevated the SVFF to where it is today, the event never fails to present an inspiring slate of films with accomplished filmmakers and celebrities who come to Sun Valley because they don’t want to miss out. From Geena Davis and Gwyneth Paltrow to Meg Ryan and Clint Eastwood and Bruce Dern, the A-listers abound, and Variety notices. And from the very start, National Geographic has been along for this incredible journey and continues their role in 2022. Sun Valley is a unique community of educated and experience-seeking souls who

connect to film, from documentaries and dramas to comedies and thrillers. And, in true ski town fashion, you can hang with everyone until the sun comes up and hit the slopes the same day. CREATING THE LEGEND

When SVFF launched, Wood River Valley resident Gregg Carr lent a helping hand. “The Sun Valley Film Festival always includes films made in Idaho, by Idahoans, and I enjoy them,” says Carr. “We have a beautiful state with fascinating history and people, and I am glad we have the opportunity to share our stories.” Carr also brought the world of Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique to Sun Valley as documentary films about restoring Gorongosa from its war-torn state began to emerge with Africa’s Lost Eden and War Elephants. An original supporter and Sun Valley local, cinematographer Bob Poole connected Sun Valley audiences to his work in svpn-mag.com

House as one of the key venues. Sun Valley Resort Director of Marketing and Public Relations Bridget Higgins is excited for the return of SVFF after the past two challenging years.

Gorongosa and other places. Bob’s wife Gina can attest to the value SVFF has brought to the community and, of course, to her and Bob. “Although we live in Ketchum most of the work is done overseas where many people will probably not get to go, so spending time working on films for months such as following an elephant family are experiences, we can share with our friends at SVFF, which is so satisfying,” says Gina. “There’s nothing like it. There’s a lot of good content out there, and it’s important, especially for younger people, to attend festivals and meet people to get to know the business because it’s competitive. SVFF is unique because it’s intimate and very accessible. We have made lifelong friends from SVFF, and what better place to do this than with the backdrop of the mountains in Sun Valley.” As Executive Director of the Argyros Performing Arts Center, Casey Mott is also a film producer, so SVFF means a great deal to him, especially since The Argyros’ world-class facility was built with film screenings in mind, especially film festivals needing a state-of-the-art technological theater system. “From the moment I met Teddy and Candice to discuss SVFF, I knew they had something special, and it was needed. Especially as someone who works in the industry, I knew it had all the makings of a great event,” says Mott. “The Argyros was created for community events of this caliber, and it’s an environment that adds to the experience.” Making SVFF possible are several Valley-wide anchor businesses, including the Sun Valley Resort, a sponsor and supporter of SVFF since it began with the Sun Valley Opera 92

svpn-mag.com

“The Sun Valley Resort is thrilled to be once again a partner and location for the iconic Sun Valley Film Festival, an event that brings the fabled history of Sun Valley’s close connection to Hollywood and the film industry to life,” says Higgins. “Sun Valley’s connection to the film world dates to our founding father, Averell Harriman, and his close and invested relationship with much of the Hollywood elite of the 1930s and ‘40s. Averell invited the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Lucille Ball, and Gary Cooper to ski, play, and work in Sun Valley. As a result, more than 20 movies have been made here over the years! This heritage is incredibly important to us and sets the perfect stage for cinephiles to enjoy a festival like no other, in a place like no other.” Higgins adds, “We’re also excited to welcome back the Vision Dinner at the Roundhouse restaurant. It’s our iconic on-mountain restaurant, where guests will experience a scenic gondola ride up Bald Mountain before enjoying a fabulous meal alongside Vision Award honorees Amy Poehler and Woody Harrelson, SVFF patrons, and special guests.

Wilson’s ability to connect SVFF with rising stars and cutting-edge films and exciting and coveted film industry artists has branded the Festival as a boutique event known throughout the film festival circuit. “I think SVFF is a great way to bring the Sun Valley community together to experience great films and connect with filmmakers and other guests to get a better insight into the industry,” he says. As SVFF’s Head Programmer, Ana Souza has selected, sourced, and reviewed films for the Festival for the past two years. Souza is a year-round programmer for the Sundance Film Festival, and the timing of SVFF after Sundance occurs made it a perfect fit for Souza.

These events help to showcase the beauty of Sun Valley’s architecture and iconic properties and truly encapsulate the symbiotic relationship with the Resort and Festival. We are all looking forward to the many film screenings, award nights, Coffee Talks, and much more, celebrating all things cinematic, the actors who bring creativity to life, and the talented individuals behind the cameras and the scenes.” BEHIND EVERY EVENT IS A STAFF MAKING IT HAPPEN

Bringing all the elements of an event like SVFF into place, there is a dedicated team. Some of them started with SVFF as volunteers and now hold essential roles in orchestrating SVFF operations. There’s no possible way an event of this level and magnitude can occur without the talent that exists behind the scenes of SVFF. Possibly the glue that makes SVFF the event it has become is the expertise of Steven Wilson, who serves as SVFF’s public relations rep to the stars and industry intel. Since 2015, Wilson has, without fail, brought some of the most exciting talent known in film and the business to Sun Valley. In his first year, Clint Eastwood received the Vision Award, and the late Bill Paxton and Bruce Dern were guests at the Festival. “One of my friends introduced me to Teddy Grennan, who was looking for additional public relations support and guidance to help raise the profile for the Festival,” says Wilson. “I came on board to provide strategic counsel and invite Festival honorees and Coffee Talkers. I also work to secure trade and national entertainment coverage and increase industry awareness through partnerships such as Variety. During the Festival, I serve as a liaison with the media and talent guests to make sure they have a great experience.”

“I’m especially excited about this year, as the first SVFF I programmed was in 2020, and everything changed so quickly with the onset of the pandemic! I’m looking forward to executing an in-person festival after all this time and seeing the audiences connect directly with the films and hearing their reactions to the program,” says Souza. When Souza attended SVFF for the first time, she was struck by how warm and receptive everyone was and especially by the appetite Sun Valley locals have for adventurous films and new, bold ways of storytelling in general. “The Festival had such a welcoming atmosphere, and having the filmmakers there forging new connections with audiences, industry, and other filmmakers alike felt so special to witness,” says Souza. “It’s an honor to be able to be a part of this process in a place that’s walking the walk when it comes to keeping independent cinema alive and the theatrical experience thriving, especially after all the changes that have taken place in the last few years.” By Souza’s side is SVFF’s Programming Manager Bennett Krishock who has been with the Festival since 2016 and started watching films as an intern. “I must have watched 200 films and shorts that season,” says Krishock. “I fell in love with the process. After that, I packed my car, drove to this place called Sun Valley, and the rest is history.” Working with Souza, Krishock helps make a great deal happen to acquire films on the screen and encourage filmmakers to attend the Festival. “Like everyone else on our team, I wear a lot of hats. Once the films are selected, and our creative deliberations are over, my job turns into a three-headed monster of production, deadlines, and coordination. It’s a hustle, but I love it,” he laughs. svpn-mag.com

93

Above: SVFF staff on the Sun Valley Opera House stage

For Krishock, SVFF is an opportunity to create a community of filmmakers and artists from across the world. “A moving image is a powerful tool, and the more voices we can bring together, the better we can understand and celebrate them,” he says. “SVFF is also rare in that it works overtime to bring these voices to the valley so that locals can meet them, learn about the art of filmmaking, and foster a community of storytellers who help us film lovers see the world at large.” When it comes to SVFF history, Celeste Matika, the Festival’s Event Production Manager, can provide a story or two. Matika has been with SVFF since its first year and has been an integral part of the event ever since. “I had worked for several other film festivals before moving to Idaho, and the Idaho Film Commissioner reached out to me to connect me with SVFF,” says Matika. “I came up to help the first year and loved everything about the Festival and the people. I think a kind of magic happens when people gather in the dark to experience a story together, and I think that magic is magnified by the alchemy of the people, time, and place of the Festival.” As SVFF’s Marketing & Communications Coordinator, Stephanie Carlson has been a hidden gem for the Festival since year three, when the Screenwriters Lab was launched. “I have taken on different roles in different years and mostly help with marketing and communications and general support,” says Carlson. “The Festival has become an event where we get to share our community with filmmakers and guests who may not normally come to the Valley. Valley residents get to meet and see folks they might not usually 94

svpn-mag.com

cross paths with. Everyone gets to see amazing films that broaden our perspectives and invite dialogue. And it’s a super fun weekend!” As Director of Development, Jenny Dupre has spent four years with SVFF in her position, which has brought significant growth to the event. “We were supporters of the Festival and friends with Candice,” says Dupre. “I came on to do strategic planning and fund development. It is a week of fun, art, and loads of talent. Participating in the arts, and more importantly, the film festival, brings long-lasting impacts to the community physically, economically, and socially. But even more importantly, it brings so much fun and color to my day! And honestly, who doesn’t need more of that these days?” Dupre adds, “The energy the Festival brings to Sun Valley is a game-changer for the area. We are so fortunate to have a festival of this caliber in Sun Valley.” Joining Dupre is her friend Johanna Divine, who serves as SVFF’s Patron Liaison for the first time this year. “Jenny and I serve on a regional arts board together,” says Divine. “I am based in New Orleans, Louisiana. I love that SVFF focuses so much energy on emerging filmmakers.” A veteran Sun Valley event planner with her own company, Sun Valley Events, SVFF’s Operations Manager Heather LaMonica Deckard has been with SVFF for the past ten years. “Teddy and Candice called and told me about the first year with great enthusiasm. It was very grassroots, and the magic was palpable,” says LaMonica Deckard. “Teddy felt compelled to move it forward. It had all the elements I

love: community, creativity, good people, thought-provoking content, good times, and accessibility.” LaMonica Deckard adds, “I think I have done every job there is to do at the Festival over the last ten years. Everyone on the team saw the vision, believed in it, and knew we just had to do the work to get there. It has been a labor of love for all the staff involved. The staff is more like a family. This Festival, for me, is a showcase of our culture here in Sun Valley. This is a film festival—nestled in the authentic mountain town culture— a culture crafted by a century of people who believed in the good life.” SVFFs General Manager Frank Fiaschetti, although new to SVFF in 2022, brings incredible experience and knowledge to SVFF in his new role. In addition, as a native of the Wood River Valley, SVFF means even more to him not only as building its legacy but for future generations and growing SVFF’s relationships in the community. “All the nuances of the Sun Valley Film Festival are what it is truly all about,” says Fiaschetti. “After ten years, the community is more welcoming than ever this year with open arms. The City of Ketchum and every business has been excited to make this year happen.” He adds, “Regardless of involvement, everyone is more willing to accommodate the Festival this year and go above and beyond to have it come to fruition. Films, Main Street party, and working with Visit Sun Valley has been a great experience.” Festival Coordinator, Elizabeth Westwood, is back for her second year at SVFF. She was previously the assistant to the directors. “I met Teddy through Bennett the summer of 2019 in Virginia. After a few jokes we both received well, he asked ‘Do you wanna work for a film festival?’ Best decision I’ve ever made.” Westwood says, “Candice always says our team is small but mighty— and we are. I didn’t get to see the 2020 festival through due to the pandemic. I’m so grateful to be back going into our second decade with my family of coworkers. It’s going to be an exciting year.” SVFF’s social media manager Zach Hart has come aboard this year after working as the music supervisor and social media manager for Teddy Grennan’s new film Wicked Games. SVFF HQ Salon talk

“I am excited to experience events he has been working on from a virtual perspective. “Looking back on the history of the film festival, it appears to be a great showcase of film, documentaries, and shorts that invites everyone who loves the art form to be an equal part in the celebration of moving images,” says Hart. Another new face to the SVFF staff is Xole Flores-Uranga, SVFF’s Travel & Lodging Manager. “This is my first year working with the Festival, though I’ve been an avid Coffee Talk attendee for the last few years,” she says. “As a local and a lover of films and that industry, the SVFF is exciting.” SVFF Event Designer Esther Williams is also officially joining the Festival for the first year, even though she’s been attending for years. “From the first Festival I attended, I was inspired by the collection of films that they brought to our town and the brilliant minds behind them, but what caught my attention were the events that bookended the films,” says Williams. As SVFF enters a new decade, there’s more to come— so get ready! There is an essential need to hear and see the world’s stories, and this is more important than ever as life is changing at a rapid pace. Watching films with an audience and your community has never been more important or apparent. It’s how we connect and understand the world in which we live—it’s storytelling. As for me, my insatiable love of independent film continues to be fulfilled every year virtual or in-person, as SVFF stands with the best film festivals in the U.S. for programming, events, and talent—it’s above and beyond, and it’s in Sun Valley, a place like no other. 

The Future Filmmakers (FFF) program is considered one of the Sun Valley Film Festival’s most unique and special events that continues to thrive. Aside from its sponsors, The Steen Family Foundation, and the efforts of the Nordstrom family—father John and sons Will and Jack—who have been part of SVFF since its very beginning, the program continues to amaze by the amount of talent that finds its way through the submission process.

Founded in 2013 by Bex Wilkinson and Peter Burke to provide an opportunity for high school filmmakers to showcase their films on a big screen in front of peers and industry professionals, FFF has continued to pursue its mission without losing a beat. “In this age of social media and iPhones, it is important for people to interact creatively and socially, in person,” says John Nordstrom. “Kids have never been more isolated because of COVID-19, so enjoying the creative process in person is more important than ever.” Using the Film Freeway submission platform, FFF announces its call for submissions and, upon receiving entries, will view and rate each submitted film. “We received over 500 submissions this year!” says John. “This is by far our biggest year, and it was very challenging to choose the top ten. Filmmakers from 68 different countries submitted films to the FFF.”

For 2022, the top ten films for FFF’s screenings represent films from Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The film slate is impressive and diverse with dramas, comedies, animation, and documentaries. “It was almost impossible to narrow down the field of incredible films,” says John. “There are 50 to 75 films that easily could have screened and been given awards. But, in the end, we need to have an entertaining and diverse program, and to consider our total running time. Nobody wants to sit through a two-hour show. So, we decided our slate should be roughly around 60 minutes.” In 2012, John submitted a homemade film called Another Way to Die to the inaugural Sun Valley Film Festival. “It was a James Bond parody starring all grade school-age kids,” he says. “Very similar to the classic film Bugsy Malone that was released in the 1970s when I was a child. The film was screened at the first SVFF, and my two sons thought it was the most exciting experience ever, and they decided that they would strive to make their own films.” Five years later, Jack submitted Puget Sound and won first place, the Hot Shot Award. FFF was the first film festival that accepted his film. “Having my work validated by someone I didn’t know was huge for my confidence as an artist,” says Jack. “For the Festival to be in a town where I grew up skiing every year made it that much sweeter. The anticipation of waiting for my film to screen alongside a group of other great films was super exciting. When my comedy film was screened, and people laughed at the right moments, I was so relieved and thrilled at the same time! Winning the Hot Shot Award was amazing because I did not expect it. Holding that validation in my hands and knowing that my story resonated was extremely special.”

The following year, Will submitted his psychological horror film In the Trees and won second place. “Being selected for a film festival will always be an amazing experience, but I was more excited that it was taking place in Sun Valley, one of my favorite places. My favorite part of the screening was watching the other selected films and noticing all the varying styles and visions of each filmmaker,” he shares. “Winning an award, especially in front of a large audience, is surreal. Honestly, whenever I win an award for something, it’s always a blur of nervousness and anticipation. However, what truly sticks with me is the laughs, gasps, and small reactions that I hear from the audience while my film is screening. To me, that’s the best award.” After Will’s win, the Future Filmmakers Forum asked Jack and Will to join as junior producers and help judge films. John also joined as a producer, and the Nordstroms took over running FFF in 2021. For 2022, pitching in on the judging process are other highly regarded industry professionals including Academy Award-winning editor Richard Chew, the editor for Star Wars, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Risky Business, The Conversation, and many more. Also judging are Emmy-and Golden Globe-winning television producer and writer Mort Nathan of The Golden Girls and the feature film Kingpin. Rounding out the judging this year are Priscilla Nedd-Friendly and David Friendly, the Oscar-nominated editor and producer responsible for Little Miss Sunshine, Pretty Woman, American Pie, We Are Marshall, The Proposal, and many more.  The Nordstroms will host the FFF screenings at the Argyros Performing Arts Center and present awards for Hot Shot, 2nd Place, and 3rd Place. In addition, the Nordstrom family is donating gift cards for each award winner. The Future Filmmakers Forum is made possible by the Nordstrom Brothers and an annual gift from the Steen Family Foundation.

HIGH SCRIBE

From Script to Screen By Danielle Vigueria

For nine years, the High Scribe Screenplay Competition has honored an emerging voice in screenwriting. Thought provoking submissions are received from aspiring writers around the globe and carefully reviewed by a team of seasoned industry insiders. The selected finalists are then paired with an experienced screenwriter and/or producer to provide valuable mentorship as the writers navigate taking their script to the screen. A committed group of advocates have helped previous High Scribe finalists secure literary agents, screenwriting jobs, and even screenplay sales. “The High Scribe really embodies what I love most about SVFF,” says Emily Granville, co-founder and director of the Screenwriters Lab. “The intimacy of the Festival and the town allows filmmakers and film enthusiasts to experience the creative process of script to screen together. This sense of community builds relationships quickly and as a result, many success stories have come from our judges/mentors advocating for High Scribe finalists. Our maiden winner, Cody Tucker, gained management with Steve Gaghan’s help ten years ago. They remain in touch today.” 98

The High Scribe competition pairs perfectly with a Festival favorite and celebration of storytelling, the Screenwriters Lab. This year’s Lab will feature a discussion facilitated by Trevor Groth, with panelists Academy Award-nominated Zach Baylin (King Richard) and 2022 High Scribe judge, Jared Stern. Jared Stern is an accomplished writer/director who began his career at Walt Disney Animation Studios, where he worked on films like The Princess and the Frog, Wreck It Ralph, and Toy Story 3. Jared then went on to work on other writing projects including, The Lego Batman Movie and Happy Anniversary, a romantic comedy he wrote and directed for Netflix. He also spent four years making the animated show, Green Eggs & Ham. Currently, Jared is wrapping up the writing and directing of DC League of Super-Pets, an animated movie starring The Rock and Kevin Hart. He also runs his own production company, A Stern Talking To. Zach Baylin is an Academy Award-BAFTA-, and WGAnominated screenwriter who writes grounded, kinetic, character-driven stories and was named one of VARIETY’s 2021 “10 Screenwriters to Watch.” Baylin most recently penned the script for King Richard for Warner Bros. Studios, which was number two on the 2018 BLACKLIST. Marking his feature film screenwriting debut, the film is based on the father of tennis greats, Venus and Serena Williams, and tells the incredible true story of Richard Williams’ plan to take his daughters from the streets of Compton, California, to the global stage as legendary icons. Starring Will Smith, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, King Richard debuted to rave reviews out of the 2021 Telluride Film Festival, is nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and was released in theaters and on HBO Max on November 19, 2021. Baylin is currently writing the script for Creed III, the third installment of the revamped Rocky series, for MGM. The film will star Michael B. Jordan, who will also be making his directorial debut through the project, and is set to release November 23, 2022. Previously, Baylin has also written projects for Lionsgate, Imagine, TNT, Studio 8, wiip, as well as for acclaimed filmmakers such as Justin Kurzel, James Grey, Jeremy Saulinier, Francesco Munzi, Rupert Sanders, and Jonathan Levine.

Trevor Groth works at 30WEST, an entertainment investment and advisory company that distributed I, Tonya and financed Destroyer, Late Night, and The Mauritanian. He executive produced the docuseries Tiger King and the film Nine Days, which won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He was previously Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, where he discovered many of the most celebrated filmmakers working today including PT Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Ryan Coogler, Ava DuVernay, Taika Waititi, and Chloe Zhao. The 2022 High Scribe Award winner will be announced live at the Screenwriters Lab. Past High Scribe Award winners include The Paisley Witch Trial, written by Julia Campanelli, and Minor Modifications by Shia LaBeouf. 

“Making an independent film is already a miracle. When you throw a pandemic into the mix, that’s almost insane.” —Ana Souza

THE ART OF PROGRAMMING Ana Souza chooses films to enlighten, engage, and entertain

By Sabina Dana Plasse

When the movie theater lights go down, and then the screen sparks with motion picture and sound, a magical moment takes place. Movies can transport you to a sacred and safe space where you can let go and engage with what is happening before you. However, choosing and deciding what should be on the screen is no easy task, especially for a film festival screening. A host of logistics and factors occur and need to be addressed before any film projects make it to a screen for an audience to experience. This is programming. It is an art form and one that Ana Souza knows well. “The programming process is fascinating, and it’s a unique time to be doing it,” says Souza. “Programming only exists with filmmakers making films. It’s a reciprocal relationship. However, places like Sundance and Sun Valley are special because they offer support and grants to help films transition from ideas to the screen. It all feeds off each other. They thrive and stay vibrant because these are film institutions with resources to give, so filmmakers can go out and make it happen with whatever they have. The pandemic is an amazing example because we still saw films being made within the health and safety parameters that existed. Making an independent film is already a miracle. When you throw a pandemic into the mix, that’s almost insane.” Filmmakers must keep making films, and the Sun Valley Film Festival allows these artists to have a venue to showcase their work, and that’s important to keep stories alive. Falling into the programming role is a standard route for how some become film festival programmers. “I worked in film while in grad school, and I started to attend festivals, which led to volunteering and screening films,” says Souza. “The first festival I attended was AFI FEST and then Sundance, where I volunteered for several years before joining the programming team. I fell in love with Sundance’s atmosphere, community, and films. I wanted to be part of whatever Sundance was doing.” After seven years, Souza continues to be an integral part of the Sundance staff and has been with SVFF for two years. Enjoying the collaborative nature of a film festival, especially

exchanging thoughts and ideas, is what Souza enjoys most about her film programming career. “I love the discovery part of the process,” she says. “With the sheer volume of viewing so many films, to have one jump out at you is very gratifying. Then, to share that film with an audience and watch the ripple effect happen there, it’s what makes a film festival special. An artist needs to connect to an audience in-person, so you can hear directly from the filmmaker, understand their intentions, ask questions, and have an exchange. It is exciting and special to be a part of. To showcase films that are scrappy, bold, and that blow up narrative conventions in experimenting is one of the most rewarding parts. These are some of the most courageous films being made, which also have a significant impact on people.” SVFF is an intimate film festival, and the strength of the program is a result of being a small boutique event. “It’s a festival for cinephiles and film lovers of all kinds, especially those who enjoy good storytelling,” says Souza. “The challenge at SVFF is narrowing down the film slate from so many incredible films that could be included.” Between submissions and the films available on the circuit internationally, Souza, with the help of Programming Manager Bennett Krishock, provides a balance for a smaller but strong slate for SVFF. “With Ana’s knowledge of the filmmakers attached to the Sun Valley Film Festival slate and the nature of the Festival, it’s unique and special because everything is accessible, and this approachable vibe is critical to keeping the Festival so extraordinary,” says Krishock. This year, SVFF will present an After Hours Slate (101), which has been gaining momentum at festivals and allows for a different theatrical experience. It’s part of a resurgence in genre occurring across filmmaking in different ways. “You will see some exciting and crazy, boundary-pushing films in this Midnight section,” says Souza. “These are films you can really immerse yourself in, especially coming back to an in-person film festival.”  svpn-mag.com

SVFF PROGRAMMING 2022 FILM SPOTLIGHTS & PICKS

Sirens This year’s SVFF film slate has a great deal of diversity reflecting a wide range of storytelling. Rita Baghdadi’s second feature, the documentary Sirens, speaks to these underrepresented and emerging voices. “It’s a documentary about the first all-female metal thrash band from Beirut, Lebanon. It was at Sundance this year,” says Souza. “These young women are going through life changes, as is Lebanon, and they are finding relationships with each other as their band is progressing. It’s a powerful, beautiful story, and it’s exciting to see a band like this exist.” 102

Documentaries

Really Good Rejects SVFF is a big supporter of Alice Gu. She was a judge for the SVFF Ford Producer’s Grant in 2021. She takes a very simple subject in Reuben Cox, a man who makes guitars but does not know how to play them, and turns it into a powerful documentary where acclaimed musicians, including Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Jim James of My Morning Jacket, to name a few, revere these instruments. “Alice Gu’s new film, Really Good Rejects, is one of my favorites,” says Souza. “We screened her film The Donut King at a previous SVFF, and her new feature is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival before screening at SVFF. It is a film that music lovers will appreciate. Gu beautifully weaves together personal accounts of the bond between musicians and their guitars and it will inevitably leave you wanting to learn to play.”

Fire of Love Sara Dosa’s feature documentary is about the Kraffts, a couple who are volcanologists. Fire of Love is also part of the National Geographic Documentary Films program at SVFF for 2022. “I’m so thrilled about this one,” says Souza. “It’s impressive and exciting and constructed from archival footage from the 1960s, which has a French New Wave feel along with Miranda July doing the voiceover. The Kraffts filmed a great deal of their work, so the footage is breathtaking and unbelievable. It’s a film about love, volcanoes, and filmmaking itself. A love triangle between them and their ultimate passion — volcanoes — and the risks they took with their work. It’s also funny and uplifting.”

Narratives

Linoleum “Linoleum is a film by Colin West that I am excited about for Sun Valley, which will be coming from its premiere in SXSW,” says Souza. “Stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan plays a Bill Nye-type television presenter who is a failed scientist. He’s dealing with family strife when a satellite crashes in his backyard. It’s a sci-fi dramedy and Colin’s voice as a filmmaker feels fresh and unique.”

Every Day in Kaimuki Every Day in Kaimuki is a 2022 Sundance film from its Next section. “I love being able to bring films from Sundance to Sun Valley because sometimes films in Next at Sundance can fly under the radar,” says Souza. “It’s the first feature from Hawaiian filmmaker Alika Tengan. It’s a sliceof-life portrait of a man who has been living in Hawaii his whole life, and he’s trying to decide if he should move to New York and what that decision would mean. It’s very urban and local, presenting a side of Hawaii rarely seen. It’s a very beautiful independent film that has a naturalistic and lived-in feeling. The music in the film is especially great, and the lead character Naz is a radio DJ. I have a special place in my heart for this film.” 104

Sun Valley filmmaker SPOTLIGHT Clara Sola Filmmakers are combining genres to create textures and new storytelling techniques, breaking conventions in the process. Clara Sola is an example of this evolution and raising the bar in storytelling. “This was the first film Ana suggested I preview, which made me very excited for the entire film slate,” says Krishock. “It’s from Costa Rica. It’s the second coming of the Virgin Mary in this little hamlet in the jungle. A young woman is trapped by her mother in their house, and she is forced to work miracles on the village people. It’s a film with an unusual superhero and beautiful moments.”

Street Heroines Street Heroines producer Jordan Hawkes grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho. She is a graduate of the Sun Valley Community School and attended Occidental College, where she studied film. Living in New York City as a filmmaker, Hawkes speaks fluent Portuguese and Spanish, which was extremely valuable in capturing the footage and working with the many female graffiti artists featured in Street Heroines, in which she was the producer in a crew of three, which included official cinematographer Diana Eliazov and director Alex Henry. Seven years in the making with shoots on location in several South American countries, Street Heroines is a film about female artists who use urban canvasses of buildings and walls to explore their creativity and cultural expression. The public art in Street Heroines created by Lady Pink, Claw Money, Nina Pandolfo, Swoon, Lady Aiko, and Shiro, among others, is remarkable and empowering. Archival footage reveals a timeline and historical print of how graffiti has changed and grown since its first appearance in the 1970s, especially in New York City. With women’s rights continuing to be a struggle, through the lens of female street artists, one can visualize the empowerment this artform brings to those creating and viewing it. Street Heroines is an example of how fearless artists create opportunities to close the gender gap and celebrate cultural identity. svpn-mag.com

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTARY FILMS Bringing the World to SVFF filmgoers By Sabina Dana Plasse

The presence of National Geographic at the Sun Valley Film Festival has been a long-lasting relationship that began 11 years ago when SVFF first launched. Since then and throughout the past decade, National Geographic has been an SVFF cornerstone hosting year-round programming, the Festival’s HQ, and, without fail, creating an inviting atmosphere to connect with filmmakers and adventurers in an intimate and engaging environment. A fit for the Sun Valley community on many levels, National Geographic’s Wild to Inspire contest launched the career of Filipe DeAndrade and gave others the ability to live out their dreams as documentary filmmakers. Ketchum’s own Bob Poole, an acclaimed wildlife cinematographer, shared his experiences and expertise many times on the National Geographic stage at SVFF, connecting to Festival attendees and supporters on a personal level. The stories are endless and fascinating. For 2022, National Geographic Documentary Films has brought even more films and people for SVFF filmgoers to discover, enjoy, and reconnect us all through cinema. This year’s slate is an homage to the explorer and the curious, especially as we find a place to reconnect after the pandemic. 106

svpn-mag.com

“We could not be more excited about our slate this year,” says Chris Albert, the executive vice president of marketing communications for National Geographic Documentary Films and Disney Original Documentary. “It’s an eclectic mix of subject matter—from the love story of two intrepid volcanologists, to an indigenous community in Brazil fighting to preserve their land and culture, to a humanitarian mission to feed the world. But what each of these films has in common is their ability to inspire audiences to awe and action through world-class storytelling.” National Geographic Documentary Films’ choices for SVFF were selected to offer filmgoers a shared experience on the big screen. “When the lights go up, the film may be over, but these stories stick with you—they spark curiosity, conversation, and hopefully a desire to make the world a better place. The opportunity to share that with other filmgoers and filmmakers throughout the Festival is invaluable,” says Albert. As the host for SVFF’s HQ on Main Street, Nat Geo’s vision is to create a space for those conversations to continue. SVFF audiences are invited to stop by and connect with the creatives behind this year’s slate of films. This year, National Geographic screenings include several attending filmmakers ranging from producers, editors, directors, and subjects, who will be available to interact and discuss their work, including The Territory and Fire of Love, which world premiered at Sundance to rave reviews, We Feed People from acclaimed director Ron Howard, and Explorer: The Last Tepui. In addition to Nat Geo’s lineup are two films from the up-andcoming Disney Original Documentary label—Mija and Mickey: The Story of a Mouse. “Alongside the love and creativity that goes into filmmaking is a lot of blood, sweat and tears—especially

when making a doc in the midst of a global pandemic,” says Albert. “Only at a festival like SVFF do you get the opportunity to hear first-hand from the people behind the lens—which is almost as fascinating as the films themselves.” As in past years, SVFF and Nat Geo will honor one individual with the Further Award, which recognizes a leader whose work is uniquely innovative, timely, and impactful— someone who has boldly pushed the boundaries of his or her field. Dr. Nathalie Dougé, a physician and the subject of the documentary The First Wave, directed by Matthew Heineman, will receive the honor and the critically acclaimed film will play for free for local healthcare workers during the festival. “Our goal at National Geographic is to give filmmakers a platform to share urgent and impactful stories that deepen our understanding of the world around us,” says Albert. “We’re so energized by the way SVFF audiences have embraced our films and mission for 11 years now. It’s an incredible place to share our docs and an experience beyond film watching— we can’t wait to be back.”

Fire of Love Jocelyne Chaput is a Bay Area editor who hails from Canada. Her documentary credits include the features People of a Feather and Fractured Land. She has also worked on a handful of acclaimed shorts, most recently Sheona MacDonald’s Into Light, and Josephine Anderson’s On Falling.

SUN VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS BASH Tito’s Handmade Vodka and The Nude Party will make SVFF awards night memorable By Danielle Vigueria

112

svpn-mag.com

Keep up with the decades-long tradition by capping off the weekend celebrating with award winners, filmmakers, and special guests at the SVFF Awards Bash. The Festival’s most outrageous party will feature the presentation of more than a dozen special awards for films and individuals honored at this year’s event. A founding sponsor of the SVFF Awards Bash, Tito’s Handmade Vodka will continue their support for the eleventh consecutive year. “Tito’s Handmade Vodka is proud to be an annual sponsor of the Sun Valley Film Festival, helping grow the SVFF Awards Bash into the celebration that it is today,” says Joey DiMarco of Tito’s Handmade Vodka. Hosting this year’s SVFF Awards Bash will be Bobby Farrelly, who is an internationally renowned filmmaker. His movies, mostly in partnership with his Oscar-winning brother Peter (Greenbook), have grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide. A list of Farrelly’s hits includes comedy classics Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, There’s Something About Mary, Me, Myself & Irene, Osmosis Jones, Shallow Hal, and Hall Pass, among many others. Farrelly is considered a “triple threat” in Hollywood—prolific as a writer, director, and producer. He has also worked extensively in the field of television, with writing credits on Seinfeld and directing credits on Loudermilk, The Now, and Trailer Park Boys. Farrelly’s latest film, Champions, stars Woody Harrelson and Kaitlin Olson.

Joining host Bobby Farrelly, will be Hayes MacArthur, who continues to be one of Hollywood’s most sought-after comedic talents. MacArthur starred in the hit TBS comedy Angie Tribeca. He can also most recently be seen in the Netflix comedy series Merry Happy Whatever alongside Dennis Quaid and in the first season of the highly acclaimed Apple series The Morning Show with Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carrell, and Jennifer Aniston. As a writer and actor originally from Chicago, MacArthur started his career performing stand-up and has since appeared in numerous television series and films including She’s Out of My League, Life as We Know It, and The Game Plan opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The awards program will be followed by an epic party fueled by the varied and dance-inducing music of The Nude Party. Together, former college friends, Patton Magee, Alec Castillo, Shaun Couture, Don Merrill, Austin Brose, and Connor Mikita, created The Nude Party in 2012. Following their first self-titled album, the group toured across the U.S., Europe, and Australia, playing at major events such as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo and opening for Jack White and the Artic Monkeys. After returning to their studio in the Catskill Mountains of New York, the group recently released its second album, Midnight Manor, which was recorded live to tape in less than a week. They are currently working on their third album and are pumped to bring their eclectic (and sometimes rowdy) rock style to Whiskey’s to close out the Festival in style.  svpn-mag.com

SETTING THE STANDARD FOR REAL ESTATE Sonya Johnston has been a resident and fixture in the real estate community in Sun Valley and a licensed broker in Idaho for over twenty years. During that time, Sonya has expanded the footprint of her work to include licensure as a broker in Hawaii, Nevada, and Washington. In Sun Valley, Sonya has led project sales at marquee developments by David Hutchinson and his team at VP Companies including Thunder Spring Residences, West Ketchum Residences, Crown Ranch Residences, Saddle Road Residences, with Warm Springs Ranch coming to market later this quarter. Outside of Sun Valley, Sonya has run sales teams at developments on the Big Island of Hawai’i at Kohanaiki, the North Shore of Kaua’i at North Shore Preserve, Lake Tahoe at Clear Creek Tahoe and Boulder Bay and, most recently, River Run townhomes within the Harvest mixed-use residential and commercial development in the heart of wine country in Woodinville, Washington, which is under development. Sun Valley Standard represents the culmination of Sonya’s twenty years of project and home sales across all of these preeminent developments. Born of the recognition that many of her clients seeking opportunities beyond project sales were tired of traditional residential real estate brokerages, Sun Valley Standard embodies a new and different type of real estate experience focused on delivering bespoke service, a deep understanding of the marketplace, a passion for quality, luxury and design, and an enthusiasm for connecting clients to the beauty and lifestyle that Sun Valley has to offer. MOUNTAIN MODERN LIVES AT RED DOOR HOME + DESIGN Marina Broschofsky’s passion for design is authentic Sun Valley By Sabina Dana Plasse PHOTO BY RAY J. GADD

What makes Sun Valley an exceptional place to live is an aesthetic to exist in a remote area without forfeiting or denying one’s sense of style and comfort. The intrinsic nature of the Valley’s design professionals dedicated to appealing to everyone’s home and office form and function is unparalleled. For one professional, Marina Broschofsky, owner and lead designer of Red Door Home + Design, her sophisticated, attractive, creative, and artistic sensibility stems from her love of Ketchum, Idaho, where she was raised and continues to live. Hailing from a creative family of artists, art dealers, and art lovers, Marina’s parents Minette and John Broschofsky are owners of Broschofsky Galleries in Ketchum. Her brother, Rudi Broschofsky, is a celebrated contemporary artist who runs the gallery. Marina was undoubtedly gifted a love for art 120

and design, surrounding herself with beautiful things. “My focus before Red Door was in the fashion industry, which crossed over into design,” she explains. “I have always enjoyed the mixing of materials and styles, as well as the tactile aspect of it all.” In 2003, Marina opened her Red Door Home + Design store to offer a retail showroom and full-service design studio. Today, her Hailey mainstay not only serves the entire Wood River Valley and beyond, but services can also be accessed online. “In the 19 years I have had my store, a great deal has happened. I have moved locations, survived recessions, and, more recently, the pandemic,” says Marina. “I have always wanted to be in Hailey but required a specific space with room enough for loading and unloading trucks, storage, recycling, an office, storefront, and parking. I am so pleased with how everything has transpired, particularly with my current location.” Marina’s true grit comes from the Sun Valley community because, without her clients, her business would not exist. “It speaks volumes,” she says. “I still work with many of the same clients since my doors opened in 2003. I feel fortunate. Especially with my staff, clients, customers, and the influx of new families coming into the valley over the past couple of years.” Another positive note to the continuous success of Red Door Design + Home is Marina’s attention to detail within her store and creating a functional website to accommodate clients and shoppers from home. “It is about creating convenience for our customers,” she says. “People can shop virtually through our manufacturers and have a preview of items that exist in the store. Specs, pricing, and availability are all in real-time, online. It is a beneficial tool.” Most of Red Door’s clients live in or have a second home in Sun Valley. “It’s a real mix, and every project is different,” Marina says. “One of the highlights to my work is that every job is unique. We offer full-service interior design from concept to completion. I like the creativity and the challenges svpn-mag.com

that every day brings because it is the process that motivates me. There’s a great deal involved with maintaining the store, design projects, special orders, keeping inventory in stock, and home staging, to name a few. There’s always something to do. We face new challenges within the industry, particularly with manufacturer transportation and production. Because we offer sales off the showroom floor, we maintain the task of keeping up with store inventory, which has additionally become a part of our daily jobs.” Adept at interior design style and industry changes, providing options and problem-solving is second nature for Marina. Her flexibility has allowed her to envision her mountain modern design style much ahead of its current appeal. “I want people to enjoy their spaces but also have them be timeless. Trendy, in my opinion, is wasteful and disposable. I like to design for a long-lasting style. Our goal is to create beautiful spaces that are functional and a reflection of our clients. We work closely with them to understand their needs for each space and how it will be used.” Warm but contemporary designs appeal most to Marina, and as she explains, “Clean, modern lines mixed with natural textures, such as wood, concrete, and metal, create the foundation of the room. Layering in soft fabrics, plush rugs, lighting, and accessories create what we define as the classic, Red Door look.” Manufacturers often change their styles to reflect current trends. Still, Red Door selects items based on Marina and her staff, keeping the design classic. “Right now, I am loving the interesting shapes that are coming out in furniture. These pieces are fun to add to a space and will be unique, as well as enduring,” she shares. Marina’s outlook for style considers the seasons and adds an extra layer for warmth and more texture. “In mountain living, we get all the beautiful seasons,” says Marina. “In the design process, we need to keep in mind that there are cold, white months, and warm summer months. It is necessary to accommodate this drastic temperature and weather change into our designs, not only for function but also from a visual 122

perspective. We like to have warmer layers, fabrics, and colors in the winter. We tend to shed some layers on the warmer days and bring in softer colors. I love using white, but half of the year, it’s white outside. Embrace white but consider adding color and texture to spaces by bringing beautiful colors through pillows, blankets, accessories, and vintage rugs. I keep an assortment of gorgeous custom pillows, unique artwork, and one-of-a-kind rugs in stock, and we continue to receive new items daily.” Red Door prides itself on having items in stock and available to leave the showroom with you, from gifts to sofas. It is a unique store because Marina’s eye is fantastic. She and her staff hand-select and curate everything in the store. “Each piece has been chosen by us and placed to look its best,” she says. “It’s a team effort. I bring in pieces I love, trying to keep it distinctive.” Making it look effortless and inviting is what sets Red Door apart. Its committed staff can think on the fly, problem-solve, PHOTO BY RAY J. make quick decisions, and offer tremendous service. Understanding how to utilize space and all the scenarios within a home, Marina’s focus is to conceptualize people’s needs to accommodate and create beauty and aesthetics along with practicality. Interior design is high-end, and a high-quality business and service must match. Marina emulates this as an extension of Sun Valley, which is a very sophisticated enclave with businesses, restaurants, and culture that is constantly evolving and offering more. “Beauty surrounds us,” says Marina. “This valley has always been home for me. I have so many roots here, raising my son, and my family and friends are here. I love to travel but can’t imagine being anywhere else. So, when the plane lands, I am always happy to be home.”  Red Door Home + Design 406 North Main Street | Hailey 208.788.9075 reddoordesignhouse.com svpn-mag.com

FINE ART | FRIESEN+LANTZ

YANNA LANTZ TAKES THE HELM OF FRIESEN+LANTZ FINE ART Gallery legacy is honored for the future The impressive works of art that adorn the walls of Friesen+Lantz Fine Art, formerly Friesen Gallery, is not the only glow and sparkle in this wellknown Ketchum art gallery. A beaming new owner, Yanna Lantz, has taken over the gallery after being its former director. As Yanna debuts her new business, much to the delight of art lovers, artists, and art enthusiasts, the gallery’s supportive staff remains the same but it is the dawn of a new era for Friesen+Lantz. “The transition has been smooth, and I could not be happier,” says Yanna. “I chose the name Friesen+Lantz to honor the Friesen Gallery legacy and to bring that legacy into the future with my own flair. In continuing support, Andria Friesen is a mentor to me in my new leadership role.” Yanna’s rise to ownership has been in the works for the last four years, and she has learned everything about the business from the bottom-up. From keeping the floor clean to installing art and working with clients and virtual installations to coordinating shipments across the country and more, she has experienced every facet of the gallery. “I am now cultivating relationships with artists and museums but continue to do all the work that I have been PHOTO BY YELENA TSIOMA

doing because I was trained so methodically to step into this role,” says Yanna. “Fine art galleries and the art world can easily be intimidating. My goal is to make Friesen+Lantz accessible to all, especially to the younger generations.” Up for the challenge, Yanna embraces the continuation of support and patronage of previous and present clients while cultivating a new generation of art collectors. “I’m not sure the younger generation understands what art can provide them,” she says. “Fine art is personal. It’s not something a machine spits out. It’s something that blood, sweat, and tears were poured into. There’s a story behind every artist and career represented at Friesen+ Lantz.” With the fast-paced evolution of fine art in the 21st century, most notably with the rise in popularity of NFTs (non-fungible tokens), this digital asset is a modern-day collectible and fine art’s foray into the technology world. One can get lost very quickly in what is happening and in following this type of digital ownership. As NFTs become more mainstream, what does this mean for a brick-and-mortar gallery space? “There’s a great deal of instant gratification from many things that are ephemeral in today’s society,” says Yanna. “I think that’s why many people are always searching for something all the time, but fine art is something that you live with,” she svpn-mag.com

says. “You have a real relationship with it. However, NFTs are exciting. There’s more than one way to enjoy art, and NFTs can be an investment, not just financial but in how you curate your online space. I am exploring the ability to launch an NFT division at Friesen+Lantz.” Welcoming a new frontier for art, friesenlantz.eth is registered on the blockchain, a platform for digital trading assets. “It is a baby step towards being part of the ‘metaverse,’ the realized digital world. Eventually, we will all be a part of it. However, what NFTs are now will not necessarily be the same in five years, as the metaverse is still five to ten years in the making,” Yanna explains. There is a great deal of learning to do, and curiosity abounds from artists, gallery owners, collectors, and anyone trying to understand what digital art means and how its value will exist. “Art enriches lives,” says Yanna. “It’s a fine line to toe, 134

but we have to do everything we are already doing and embrace what’s to come.” ABOUT YANNA LANTZ

Yanna moved to the Wood River Valley from Los Angeles in 2014 for healing. As someone who suffers from an autoimmune condition, Crohn’s Disease, she recalls that time as the worst she had ever experienced. Ketchum was well-suited for Yanna, who wanted an artistic and closeknit community surrounded by nature. “My fiancé, Brett, was working for St. Thomas Playhouse, so I joined him and worked on costumes and sound for the production of South Pacific,” says Yanna. “I fell in love with the community, the area, and didn’t want to leave.” Once relocated to the Wood River Valley, Yanna and Brett helped co-found the black-box theater, The Spot, in PHOTO BY YELENA TSIOMA

FINE ART | FRIESEN+LANTZ

Zoonotic Tonic by Mia Brownell. Oil on canvas, 30”x 36”. Featured at Friesen+Lantz.

“Fine art is personal. It’s not something a machine spits out. It’s something that blood, sweat, and tears were poured into. There’s a story behind every artist and career represented at Friesen+Lantz.” — Yanna Lantz

September 2014. “I was trained in theater, and there are so many parallels between theater and the fine art world, telling a story, setting the atmosphere, lighting… but now the artists and their work are the stars,” she says. “My job is to tell their stories, and in my new position as a director and owner, it is also my job to make sure everyone is doing their best job in their roles. So, it’s a collaboration much like theater.” MIA BROWNELL’S ZOONOTIC TONIC

For March 2022, Friesen+Lantz Fine Art presents the work of Mia Brownell in her new show, Zoonotic Tonic. A reaction to what is happening in our food systems and consumption, Brownell offers a body of work that addresses science and food questions. Suspect food markets that may start zoonotic pandemics, drug and vaccine development, and new research into bio-hacking photosynthesis in leaves are recent considerations in

Brownell’s investigation to reexamine and re-envision the traditions of the painted food still life as a faithful representation of nature. Mia Brownell has a special meaning for Yanna as her work is centered around food and science. “I am hyper-conscious about food because of having Crohn’s Disease. However, the message in her work is compelling, and it doesn’t apply to people just with diseases. It’s about all of us. What we eat is what we are going to become. Plus, Brownell’s still lifes are beyond stunning. Her use of light, detail, and form is a healing tonic for these strange times and the present zoonotic pandemic,” Yanna says. As a society, there are important choices to make. Will we continue to lay waste to ourselves and our planet, or instead create meaningful change? Brownell’s gorgeous and incredibly detailed paintings ask these vital questions. It’s up to the viewers to explore these queries in themselves and their surrounding world. “Friesen+Lantz Fine Art will continue to be extremely selective with its group of artists, and we want artists who are constantly pushing themselves and exploring what it means to be human in the 21st century because things are changing so rapidly,” says Yanna. “Art changes and saves lives, and it certainly saved me. Art survives, and it propels us forward. I am thrilled for this to be my next chapter.”  Zoonotic Tonic New works by Mia Brownell March 11-April 9, 2022 320 1st Avenue | Ketchum 208.726.4174 friesenlantz.com svpn-mag.com

Wabi Sabi This exhibition takes the traditional Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi, which is both a philosophy and a design approach, into the 21st century, exploring the ways that mending and repair, restoration and transience remain compelling notions for many artists. Each of the artists in the exhibition makes objects that celebrate natural, unrefined, and imperfect forms. Mark Newport and Yeesookyung repair and reimagine new objects out of damaged or broken ones. Their fragmented, colorful, mended pieces celebrate ideas of renewal. A respect for nature and purity of material is evident in Shiro Tsujimura’s ceramic work and in Frances Trombly’s fiber pieces. Both approach their practice with a deep respect for their medium and a desire to simplify form while challenging tradition. 138

Steven Lee Adams, Shanna Kunz, and Sean Wallis Ongoing

As a longtime favorite of Kneeland Gallery clients, Steven Adams strives in his work to portray the elusive feeling of timelessness beneath objects that might otherwise seem commonplace. Preferring to paint a broken fence or a ditch to a majestic mountain, he endeavors to communicate the beauty of his subject matter and haunt the viewer. Utah artist Shanna Kunz offers different interpretations of the landscape using a warm palette and the play of mood, light, and color. Each location she paints is an encounter with the land, the trees, and the waters that give her a sense of connection and order. 146

A recent addition to the gallery, Sean Wallis uses a combination of brush and knife work to build a texture that creates an abstractness that blends into an impressionistic style. He defines his work as “impressionistic romanticism.” His style has been honed through an apprenticeship with his wellknown father, Kent R. Wallis, rather than formal instruction at an institution. 271 1st Avenue North | Ketchum 208.726.5512 kneelandgallery.com

FINE ART | NOW SHOWING

Broschofsky Galleries Ongoing With a focus on the West, group shows featuring the works of gallery artists are presented through March, April, and May 2022.

Among the featured artists is Russell Young, well known for his bold, iconic silkscreen paintings of pop imagery. His groundbreaking screen print renditions present a visual journey that bears witness to both the excess and ambition that has helped shape the American Dream. A brooding and sometimes brutal celebration of the characters and events that glamorize and chastise in equal measure, the works set out to assert and challenge our perception and understanding of what it is to be American in the 21st century. Young experiments with diamond dust in many of his works, drawn to the texture and luminous finish. He describes how he first discovered this technique: “It was an old bag of Warhol’s diamond dust. I was looking to give my paintings a three-dimensional quality and a reflective quality; I had tried inks and all these different things, and then we suddenly discovered this old bag... We put it onto the painting, and it took on this fantastic life. I took it back to California and pinned it on the wall in my house, and at night the moonlight hit it, and it reflected. And then I took two or three of the paintings outside and hung them on the bushes, and I thought, ‘I love this stuff.’” Siksika Chief Curly Bear by Russell Young Diamond dust screen print.

Since he began using it, Young has started to make his own diamond dust, bringing a meditative quality to his screen prints. The material captures the light and forms an aura around the subject: a physical manifestation of the fragile yet enduring nature of fame. The alluring surfaces of the works create a barrier that is simultaneously visible and invisible, tangible, and immaterial. Also showing works by Russell Chatham, Ewoud DeGroot, Bill Barrett, Rudi Broschofsky, Ken Peloke, David Yarrow, Andy Warhol, and more. 360 East Avenue | Ketchum 208.726.4950 brogallery.com

Trees VI, St. Tropez by Laurie Victor Kay Archival pigment photograph 54” x 43”

Gilman Contemporary Laurie Victor Kay Compositions Ongoing

Laurie Victor Kay’s vibrant photographic compositions of trees and urban scenes will be featured in Kay’s fifth solo exhibition at Gilman Contemporary. Through her lyrical photographic constructs, seamless arrangements play with our sense of perspective and give new life to familiar landscapes. Her arboreal images show branches, trunks, and leaves splitting and rejoining to create a new narrative that is no longer natural but more psychological. She injects hyper hues and rewrites these 148

images with her unique visual language. Metro scenes and ornate interiors are manipulated with an almost mathematical perfectionism, allowing her to construct energized and idealized spaces. It is no surprise that Laurie was once a painter. Each photographic work is reimagined until it provokes a sense of exploration and abandonment. Laurie Victor Kay’s works are in numerous private collections throughout the United States. In addition, Laurie owns Laurie and Charles Photographs in Omaha, Nebraska. Her commercial clients include the Tiger Woods Foundation, Nike, Proctor and Gamble, AT&T, The New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, and Travel and Leisure, among many others.

Blame it on the Rain by Marco Casentini Acrylic on D-bond, 30” x 23”

Marco Casentini What I Never Told You Ongoing

Italian painter Marco Casentini has a true understanding of the form and function of color. Starting with simple blocks, Casentini builds flat, dynamic surfaces that use complementary hues to create a vibrancy that is present in even the most muted works. Each painting works within the constraints of geometry while expanding how we perceive shape and color. Known for solid square layers of color, Casentini’s new work adds dimension through intricate lines that are laced over larger, solid swatches of pigment. The gridded, woven overlays draw on the complex visual relationship between colors. In his linear works, the vertical or horizontal stripes offer a sense of harmony, vibration, and rhythmic brilliance. Marco Casentini has been represented by Gilman Contemporary since 2007. His work has been featured in over 150 solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and Australia. Most recently, his work was presented in Drive In, a solo exhibition at the Museum of Art and History, in Lancaster, Califorina, which later traveled to Bocconi Art Gallery, Milan, Italy; Reggia di Caserta, Caserta CE, Italy; and Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Center, Kuwait City, Kuwait. This is his eighth solo exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art, having first exhibited in 1999 as an emerging talent. He currently lives and works in Milan, Italy, and Hermosa Beach, California.

This spring brings an exhibition of large-scale photography from Wendel Wirth, Tuck Fauntleroy, and David Burdeny. Each artist has a unique ability to capture the landscape. Ketchum-based photographer Wendel Wirth focuses on dilapidated agricultural structures across Idaho, commenting on our disappearing farmland. Tuck Fauntleroy’s series Waterline captures the emergence of water as the snow recedes. Based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Fauntleroy carefully mapped out isolated sections of the national forests around the area that are free of human intrusion. Canadian David Burdeny’s work depicts the way humans intervene with the environment, whether quarrying in Italy or an isolated luncheonette in the barren landscape of Saskatchewan, Canada. 661 Sun Valley Road | Ketchum 208.726.7585 gilmancontemporary.com

Friesen+Lantz Fine Art Mia Brownell Ongoing

The newest exhibition at Friesen+Lantz, Zoonotic Tonic, will feature incredibly intricate canvases from acclaimed still life painter Mia Brownell. This dynamic exhibition explores being human in the age of biotechnology, particularly as it relates to the current pandemic. Brownell’s work has always focused on primal questions about food—from how it is grown to how it functions as a signifier in society, with a particular focus on scientific invention. If we are what we eat, then we can look to our food, how it is processed, shared, and consumed, for clues about ourselves and what we may become. Set against a backdrop of classical still life 17th-century Dutch realism, but with a modern, scientific, almost sci-fi approach, Brownell’s work weaves together culture, science, and environmental issues surrounding the global industrial food complex. In this new series, Brownell adds leaves to her vocabulary of spiraling clusters of organic food matter to inspire a new color palette and point symbolically to the notion of transition and collective mutation. Mia Brownell has been cited in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Boston Globe, Artnet Magazine, and Hi-Fructose. 320 1st Avenue | Ketchum 208.726.4174 friesengallery.com

FINE ART | NOW SHOWING

u talk, I talk by Avery Wheless Oil on canvas, 2022 20” x 24”

OCHI Gallery Avery Wheless Collective Intimacies April 2 through May 14, 2022

Collective Intimacies features new paintings that celebrate female bodies at play—in solitude or in spirited synchronization, but always sequestered from judgment. Thick brushstrokes become limbs as bodies drape themselves over lounge chairs, fall into the grass, or caress velvet cushions. Each painting draws the observer into a scene where women laugh leisurely as they relax with friends, stylish even when casual. A finger daintily traces the lip of a glass while gesturing to a friend, and mouths are caught mid-whisper out of earshot of the viewer. Figures and forms melt into each other but retain elements of fragility. Wheless becomes the director, arranging her protagonists and composing narratives as they interact softly with each other, free from harshness or expectation. Each body in space finds her stage and performs without the rigidity of public perception. The women depicted in Wheless’ works set the terms of their own loveliness, passing afternoons in comfort and evenings in luxury. Amused together at midnight around a candle-lit table, relishing in the dip of a toe into water, a clandestine

conversation among friends—each scene expressing ease and thus, sanctuary. The figures in Surveillanced Fun! (2021) joke amongst themselves, donning pearls and flirty dresses under massive chandeliers. Garnishing cocktails, they walk in unison and beckon others to join in the revelry. Socially energized surfaces are contrasted with quieter ones. All of my feelings (2022) portrays a woman daydreaming under a pastel-swirled sky—serene and alone, but in no indication lonely. Questions of performance and social anxiety perforate Wheless’ party scenes as the lines between observation and participation become blurry. The artist photographs her friends and sources other figures from social media— the uncanny combination of spontaneous or carefully posed bodies, not to mention anonymous or recognizable faces, illuminates these psychological tensions. Exploring these vulnerabilities, Wheless asks her viewer to become voyeur, flaneur, people-watcher, and guest—though she is ultimately in control of all players. The psychology of leisure and issues of class in the context of the social are on display throughout Collective Intimacies, and each feminine tableau articulates a nuanced point of view. 119 Lewis Street | Ketchum 208.726.8746 ochigallery.com svpn-mag.com

Gallery 3 | Berkeley Hoerr April exhibition

Berkeley Hoerr’s, Where There’s Smoke, is a breakout solo exhibition of mixed media paintings and embroidered pieces, which examine nature during the various stages of wildfires. The images of vegetation, smoke, fire, blackened earth, and ash are sourced mainly from news media coverage of California wildfires. Each finished painting is created by painting smaller works on paper, then cutting them into pieces and arranging them into a single, cohesive piece. The artist’s process of deconstructing and reconstructing paintings intentionally reflects the cyclical nature of wildfires.

Sun Valley Museum of Art Printmaking and the Political: The Mexican Graphic Tradition April 1 through June 8, 2022

Since the late 19th century, artists in Mexico have used printmaking as a tool for disseminating news, sharing political views, and celebrating Mexico’s national culture. Throughout the 20th century, Mexico’s printmakers synthesized text and images in prints that documented the events of the Mexican Revolution, promoted socialist ideals (including anti-imperialism), and, during World War II, warned Mexico’s citizens of the dangers of fascism. In other prints, artists honored Mexico’s cultural traditions, from Day of the Dead to folk dances, often within the framework of the country’s post-revolutionary national identity. Inexpensive to make, reproduce and distribute, prints in Mexico have been a popular means for trying to shape public opinion.

The exhibition features prints from the collection of José Calle, including late 19th-century works by José Guadalupe Posada, and prints by many of the artists affiliated with the Taller de Gráfica Popular in the mid-20th century, alongside work by contemporary Mexican and MexicanAmerican printmakers. Sun Valley Museum of Aart invited printmaker Christie Tirado, based in Yakima, Washington, to participate in a residency as part of the project. While in the Wood River Valley this past summer, Tirado met with a variety of people who have been essential workers during the pandemic, selecting several of them for linocut portraits. Tirado also conducted a bilingual printmaking workshop that invited people of all ages to answer the question: Who (or what) has been essential in your life during the pandemic? The prints participants made in response will be part of the exhibition, as well as work by contemporary printmakers Artemio Rodríguez, Sergio Sánchez Santamaría, and Dignidad Rebelde (Melanie Cervantes and Jesus Barraza). 191 5th Street East | Ketchum 208.726.9491 svmoa.org

STRESS HAPPENS Keep Calm and… By Mary Kay Foley, PT, CHTP/I, GCFP, St. Luke’s Clinic—Rehab

YOU CAN TAKE STEPS TO BE LESS STRESSED:  F ocus on the present moment instead of past events  

You can’t stop stress; it’s a natural part of life. Stress can derive from positive events, such as a new job, moving, or marriage, and from difficult circumstances, such as illness, loss of a loved one, or juggling multiple responsibilities. Nevertheless, stress does promote growth and adaptation. Stress has been a normal biological reaction to threats, real or perceived. Reactions tend to be “Fight, Flight, or Freeze.” Your brain releases hormones to fuel your capacity to respond. When the threat passes, the body is intended to return to a normal state. Unfortunately, the pressures in today’s world often lead many to operate in a constant state of stress, which can lead to serious health consequences over time. We were not meant to, and do not have to, live in a perpetual state of high anxiety. Fortunately, there are many tools we can develop to deal with and manage stress. What counts is how you react to stress—by reducing it when you can and building resiliency to recover from stress when it can’t be avoided. The first step is monitoring your stress levels and making it an ongoing goal to practice stress relief. 158

EASE STRESS IN…

Five minutes: Listen to music, relax, slow your breathing. There are apps and/or playlists that can aid in relaxation and even with quieting our minds to help us fall asleep.  Many forms of relaxation can take just a few minutes, such as “grounding.” Sit in a chair with feet flat on the floor with one hand on your heart and the other on your belly. Take time to scan and be aware of your body, your feet connecting with the earth, and your head reaching for the sky. Close your eyes and imagine a tree. It can be a tree you know from your childhood, your yard, or from a picture. Imagine stepping inside the tree, feeling its roots in the earth, getting nutrients, and absorbing sun and air with its branches and leaves. When you step back outside the tree and open your eyes, you will hopefully feel peaceful and have perspective.

FOCUS AND FLOW Ketchum-based CENTER Health & Performance provides an xyz approach

Being in the FLOW, or “in the zone,” is fluid, a state of optimal wellness, concentration, and immersion. We may have felt this state playing sports, climbing peaks, surfing, working, coaching, but also in art museums, creating art or music, during meditation or yogic chanting. It is a state of being completely immersed in the moment, totally focused, and feeling at peace, happy, loved, grateful, and in love with life. We naturally gravitate towards experiences that invoke this state or individuals who live this way. Everything is easy, and everything is joyful in this state. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Importantly, a recent study examined flow and mindfulness while coping with the uncertainty of the pandemic and the deleterious side effects of isolation, financial destruction, fear, and depression. Evidence links flow to greater well-being in various domains, including work, sports, collective gathering, rituals, and leisure activities. In neurological terms, it is when the brain is operating in a balanced, efficient way to achieve a state of happiness, presence, and health. We have all watched sports when an athlete or team is totally in a state of flow and in harmony to achieve their goals or ballet or orchestra performances when a feeling of awe and ecstasy is invoked, and we leave feeling touched, inspired, peaceful, and happy. The question is how we can achieve more of this consistently. And the answer is health. When our bodies/brains align with an optimal state of health and wellness, and our systems are balanced, healthy, and vibrant, we achieve this state more often. It is hard work to keep ourselves healthy, in a state of organization, strength, and alignment. Generally, everything in the universe tends toward entropy or a form of disorder and chaos. The second law of thermodynamics states that an isolated system’s total entropy (randomness or chaos) always increases over time. The opposite of this is negentropy. Life is considered to be negentropic, restoring more order in systems. 160

svpn-mag.com

WELLNESS | CENTER

Negentropy is achieved with consciousness. The body/brain gives structure, function, and order to anything around it. And the more we order our lives with health and vibrancy through conscious eating, conscious community, conscious relationships, conscious spirituality, the more order, function, and flow we experience. At CENTER, we are a neurologically-based clinic, and optimal health and performance in all ways is our goal. We see that much of this comes through a balanced brain. The body quickly follows. We achieve this by training the brain towards the greatest efficiency and healthiest patterning. We can determine the most efficient course of action towards order and health by taking an E.E.G. and capturing objective data on stress tolerance, processing, anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional volatility, cognitive efficiency, head injury, and more. We also achieve health with QNRT resets and nervous system training and the AMIT method, a neuromuscular technique. It would be difficult, while in a state of trauma, for instance, or while experiencing intense anxiety or depression, to experience a sustainable focused state of flow. By laying the conditions for health and balance, we can share that desired state more often. While training the brain, frequently inefficient patterns fall by the wayside. Often when working with neurofeedback and QNRT, anxiety is usually gone, just all of a sudden. Focus can occur for the A.D.D. child once the processing lobe is trained. Training the trauma areas of the brain can allow the person to move forward in life and not be stuck in reliving the trauma every day, recreating the situation around them.

Flow is what psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls the “secret to happiness” and a state of “optimal experience” that each of us can incorporate into our everyday lives. One is characterized by the immense joy that makes a life worth living. Czikszentmihalyi describes flow as focused on an experience rather than on self, a merging of actions and awareness, and intrinsically rewarding experiences. A recent study also shows that flow helps people stay resilient in the face of adversity, guard against depression and burnout, and research also showed that people who experienced the more substantial feeling of flow had better well-being during the last two years of the pandemic. (doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0242043) Let’s do it! In a society quickly heading out of control to complete entropy, we can individually restore order around us, within us. We have the consciousness and ability to restore order where there is none, starting with ourselves. Every aspect of our health is relevant right now to experience focus and flow, and to restore order to our broken systems, both inside and around us.  svpn-mag.com

Sun Valley is a place where many feel connected to nature on a soul level. It’s an area that brings an internal awareness to people, unlike any place you may know. As we begin to connect with our lives, people, places, and bodies, it may not feel the same as it did two years ago before the entire world changed. The GLOW retreat has been designed for appropriate yoga, guided meditation, and daily outdoor movement, as it’s important to move the lymph system to facilitate cleansing. “We believe in the healing power of soaking in natural minerals to create ease in the body from accumulated stress and positively affect both the mind and spirit,” says Shannon. “This soak retreat will be focused on detox modalities to cleanse the system. There will be visits to natural hot springs while following a carefully crafted cleansing diet using liquid nutrition, pureed foods, supplementation, and therapeutic body care aimed at conscious detoxification.” ABOVE PHOTO PROVIDED BY PURSOMA; RIGHT PHOTO BY KIRSTEN SHULTZ

PIONEER SALOON Walking into the Pioneer Saloon in Ketchum is like greeting an old friend. It’s often the first stop for locals coming home or visitors starting a memorable vacation. For more than 50 years, the Pioneer has been welcoming its loyal customers with a warm and cozy atmosphere that feels more like someone’s home than a restaurant. Renowned for perfectly aged and flavorful beef, many varieties of seafood, fresh Idaho rainbow trout, and Northwest regional specials, the Pioneer is much more than a steakhouse. Unique and historic western art fills the bar and restaurant, reminiscent of earlier days when pioneers settled in this Valley. Authentic and genuine friendly service from familiar faces will make you feel as though you have arrived home when you walk in the door. As the locals say, “If you haven’t been to the Pioneer Saloon, you haven’t been to Ketchum.”

DINING GUIDE

MICHEL’S CHRISTIANIA Few other restaurants in Ketchum are as steeped in history as the legendary Christiania. Known as “The Christy” to locals, the restaurant has been in operation since 1959 when Ernest Hemingway dined there so often he had his own table. To get your own glimpse of ski history, come to the famous Olympic Bar, where photos and

mementos from owner Michel Rudigoz’s time as the U.S. Women’s Olympic Ski Team Coach adorn the walls. For a true culinary experience, Executive Chef Laurent Loubot, who hails from Chalon-sur-Saone (Burgundy), presents classic French cuisine that is also inspired by Michel’s background in Lyon (the country’s culinary capital). Your meal

will be a pièce de résistance! Entrées like Wild Salmon in Sorrel Sauce and Braised Lamb Shank appear nightly on the menu in addition to an infusion of specials like the Poisson du Jour and Pâté de Campagne. The menu also features Lyonnaise pomme frites and fresh salads and, of course, Michel’s extensive wine list.
