Editor’s Note By Loaa Zahar

Why am I here? Why am I inside this body? , why am I that fat/ thin?, why am I not as beautiful as her?, why am I not that successful person?, why..Why..And lots of whys. I guess that idea came to your head a zillion times maybe, always wondering why you’re not as successful as your friend, or as beautiful as your elder sister, or maybe as stronger as your elder brother, and you can sit here all day talking about why you’re not like those people and you’re different in many aspects. Have you ever had that epiphany moment and have your perspective changed in this specific dilemma? Of course not, you’re so busy thinking about others to change perspectives. Let’s talk about a very small point, imagine the world missing one person, and by person I mean YOU, your place in everyone you know in life is actually missing, nobody is filling your spot, imagine your basketball team missing their main player, your family missing their son/daughter, imagine your void space in the world, let me ask you this, can a car work without any of its parts? Can a painter complete his piece without having that special touch at the end? Can you finish that 100+ pieces puzzle without that piece? you may not be seeing that with your current state, you as a human being, you do matter to other people, you do have an impact on them in one way or another, they don’t care if you’re not on top of your class, they don’t love and cherish you because of your clear beautiful skin, or your high ranking in school or even your car. 6 | SuperMuslims - Issue #8

your existence is way broad than only being here in this world for materialistic reasons; Allah has created you for a reason, you’re alive for a reason, you’re in this shape and looks for a reason; reasons that only Allah knows; you need to remember one thing, you’re perfect the way you’re, you’re perfect because Allah created you in the best shape and soul, you’re perfect!

Back on Track By Fatema El-Sayed Basketball: how SM started.

Religious

Yes, you read that correctly; the stupendous organization that I am a part of, the organization that has 50,000 members sharing in on its Facebook tathkeer group and organizes amazing dawah and volunteering events every month started out with a bunch of guys getting together to play basketball. Mind you, these aren’t just any guys however. These are the original founders of SuperMuslins: Youssef Emam, Saif AlDin Hesham, Maged Abdelsalam and Mohamed Ezzat. It was the last two that originally came up with the idea and the rest jumped on board when the online Facebook group was first made. It is through their tears, sweat and blood that SM has become what it is now. But let’s backtrack a bit more because though the SM fire might have been lit on the basketball field, its spark has origins further back. Namely, it has origins in Mohamed Ezzat. If you ask Ezzat, however, he would claim that its origins are in Maged Abdelsalam. We’ll compromise and say that it existed in both of them: a piece floating around in each. For it was only when they came together that the potential was realized. It wasn’t always there though, but rather it was created over a long time. The Prophet (pbuh) once said that those who are strongest in disbelief are those who are strongest in belief. The example of this is Omar ibn Khattab, whom the Muslims believed had less chance of converting to Islam than his donkey. Ezzat was a pretty good modern day example, for there was a time when he not only did wrong, but also encouraged his friends with him. A leader at birth, he was quite an influential character. So much so that a schoolmate several years his senior told me stories of how she looked up to him even then and when he eventually started getting closer to Allah, he pulled many people with him, including her. Exactly how did that happen? The first step was this realization: if you’re hanging out with nine idiots, you’re probably the tenth. Once Ezzat decided that he wanted to be more religious, he faced the obstacle of his (then) friends immediately.

They did not understand why he did not want to hang out with them in the way he used to and when he seemed to be becoming ‘less cool’. But onwards he trudged. Despite all the negative feedback, he insisted that this was the right thing to do. As he slowly made his way closer to Allah - taking two steps forward and one step back each time - Ezzat noticed someone else that seemed to be making the same journey: Maged Abdelsalam. Maged also had started distancing himself from the drama and antics of their group of friends and was often backlashed for doing so. And so the Maged and Ezzat duo was made. Both Maged and Mohamed are different in every mean; it is hard to imagine two people more different. The only thing they had in common was their want to get closer to Allah. No longer hanging out with their regular friend circle, Maged and Ezzat started meeting up to play basketball with a few other guys. One day, after Maged and Ezzat had already come up with the vague idea for SuperMuslims, they offered the idea up to the other guys who readily agreed. They then collected more people from school, university, family, friends and a Facebook group of 50 people was created. They decided on the first event - an orphanage visit - and went through with it successfully. Little by little, SM grew bigger. Not just in numbers but in structure and output. And it all started out with 2 people reminding each other where they wanted to go. Hence, this is the story of SM, in more ways than one. This is Mohammed Ezzat’s story, Maged Abdelsalam’s story and the story of Sohba Saliha and how important those around us are. It is a reminder to us all that any friend who keeps us away from Allah is no real friend.finally breaking the surface after so many years of drowning; he is still far from done. For there are still many, millions, of other people still below the water, struggling to breathe and it’s our job to help pull them up while working to keep ourselves afloat. May Allah keep all of us who have come to know each other via SM together in this world and in Heaven. For the legend of Maged and Ezzat may have begun with a bunch of guys playing basketball, but it has ended up being a multiplication of one of Allah’s most beautiful blessings: Sohba Saliha. 9 | SuperMuslims - Issue #7 9 | SuperMuslims - Issue #8

Ummah 101 By The Red Scribe

All Tied Up Unity: another one of those I-hear-too-often words. Bedtime stories always hammered the importance of being a single unit – I can still see myself practically drooling after hearing how the wolf ate the three cows that betrayed each other. Being in my 20’s now, I’ve stopped Google-ing the gingerbread man, and have started to take things more seriously – alternately directing my attention towards passing with a good score in my hereafter. The people who know me well have taken it upon themselves to not leave a single week of our friendship without mentioning how “lonesome” a person I am. I find it therefore slightly counter-productive to write such an article. However, I leave it to my readers to decide this time; because ultimately this should not be about me, but about the strong message I intend to deliver. Egypt has been going through a political roller-coaster ride. Ever since the 25th of January, politics seem to be the one thing people talk about. Everywhere I go, people always seem to love thrilling me with their theories on how to make the country better. It’s become a rash honestly; for politics are to be taken as a side interest, not an addiction as has recently turned out. The reason I deem this over-interest in politics so harmful in Egypt is its ability to segregate people. On one side, you have supporters, on the other side, you have objectors. As the issues get bigger, so does the segregation – which eventually results in two massive heaps of people clobbering over who’s right and who isn’t. The old wives tale says how division leads to destruction – and there you go; just check the Egyptian Economy and you’ll get solid proof. 12 | SuperMuslims - Issue #7 12 | SuperMuslims - Issue #8

Unity teaches us that it is not the leader who is to be congratulated, but the team that leader was responsible for. Our goals, without unity, become distant; for the one thing that blinds us is our obsession with triumph. Not only does that harm us, but also it allows others to siege the opportunity and make things even worse – something that could have been avoided by a simple head nod. Unity isn’t a goal, but a method towards greatness. For a nation that has been suffering for quite a while now, gathering around a single opinion and working for the best of its people and its future is something we really need to consider. But remember; nothing happens without you changing yourself first. Put aside your differences when you’re The prophet – PBUH – himself was a firm believer in the strength of unity. In war, he would seek the opinion of his beloved companions, and would make sure that the majority was taken, even if against his own personal views – PBUH -, an example from many others. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) says: ‫الل َج ِميعا ً َوال تَفَ َّرقُوا‬ ِ َّ ‫َوا ْعت َ ِص ُموا بِ َح ْب ِل‬ But here’s the lob: why is unity so important? Well, that’s just it. When people’s personal affairs get in the way, disagreements embark, effectively resulting in poor coordination and inefficiency. Tasks become laborious to do; and as our problems get bigger, we forget the main goals. The goals we would have otherwise strived to achieve for the minuscule arguments we have over who gets the remote control.

A Cup of Coffee With by Shazad Khan

Salam’alaikum! Today we have Nadir, and we will now begin to have a cup of coffee with him! Can you tell us a little about yourself? I am a business professional, an American born Muslim of Pakistani Descent. If you could travel somewhere, where and why? Usually when the thought of travel arises you think to go somewhere where the weather is nicer. Keeping this in mind, and the fact that I am a Muslim; I would like to travel to the Ka’bah and the Masjid Al-Aqsa. As a Muslim I have the obligation to follow the Qur’an and the Sunnah of The beloved Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him). Allah says, “O you who believe, obey Allah and His Messenger ... “ [Al-Qur’an 8:20] Whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger is with those whom Allah has blessed.” [Al-Qur’an 4:68] As reported in narrations of the Prophet (PBUH), Abu Hurayrah (RA) relates that the Prophet (SAW) said, “You should not undertake a special journey to visit any place other than the following three Masjids with the expectations of getting greater reward: the Sacred Masjid of Makkah (Ka’bah), this Masjid of mine (the Prophet’s Masjid in Madinah), and Masjid Al-Aqsa (of Jerusalem)”. In another narration the words are, “For three Masjids a special journey may be undertaken: The Sacred Masjid (Ka’bah), my Masjid and Masjid of Jerusalem (Al-Aqsa).(Sahih Bukhari & Muslim) What do you find is most important to you? The belief in Tawheed, the Oneness of Allah, the Magnificent Lord, in Islam, is of utmost importance to me. Allah’s Oneness by definition means that there is only one God without any partner in his lordship and he is divine, both in names and attributes.

What is one of your favorite about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)? Even before Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was blessed with the message of Islam, He was well-respected and known as the “Trustworthy.” This was truly exemplified when it came to rebuilding of the Ka’bah, more specifically, placing the Black Stone It was Muhammad (PBUH) who was tasked with deciding who would have the honor of lifting it into it’s place (having been the first person to have walked through the gate of the Mosque after returning from a trip. The clans of Quraysh were ready to take arms and fight until an old man had brought forth this solution. When the people saw it was Muhammad (PBUH) they were immediately at ease seeing him as ‘Al-Amin.’ It was The Prophet’s (PBUH) decision to have the clans each hold the border of a cloak and lift all together until he himself placed the Black Stone. How do you think you have changed within the last 5 years? The last couple years in my life can be seen as a period of self-discovery. Summarized as having graduated from a university and taking on a full time job. Initially I thought this was the big change, and certainly it can be seen as a big part of growing up but reality was not so convincing. It means you have matured, you are now more responsible, and all that time you had spent studying could be applied in the real-world and instead of paying a check to take classes you would be getting a check for your work. Life isn’t necessarily as simple to me anymore-before I literally believed that it was enough to have a career, work for a paycheck and build a 401k- to fall back on for retirement- and that was it, but now I see that this is a good start. I feel that now I know that I need to work not only for the good in this life but for the good in the hereafter. What this truly means has new meaning regularly. Allah has created each and every one of us very uniquely and it is our responsibility to dig deep within oneself and constantly improve in deen and dunya. How do you try to balance the deen with the dunya ? The deen and dunya go hand in hand. Islam is fundamentally a way of life. Alhumdulillah, all things that are forbidden are for the better of society, whether it be for your health, or mental capacity, or for reasons unknown and Allah knows best. With Islam being a way of life it should be thought of as natural to think of both as one in the same-integrated. By them being integrated I try everyday to better integrate the two. The more mindful I am of Allah The Most Gracious, the more easier it becomes InshaAllah. 15 | SuperMuslims - Issue #8
