ASSOCIATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A BETTER ENVIRONMENT

ADOBE has been able to schedule Mr. Kevin Thompson of the Arizona Corporation Commission to attend an ADOBE Community Meeting on August 18, 2023, at the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel. The meeting will concern the latest information on the upcoming potential of a major water rate hike for all Gold Canyon citizens. The meeting will begin at 7 pm. Gold Canyon citizens - please try to attend.

Gold Canyon organization GCCI is currently in the process of evaluating a Gold Canyon Community Plan. The organization is attempting to have as many Gold Canyon citizens involved as possible to ensure plan involvement is representative of the total community. If you wish to review and comment on the proposed plan, please contact Jerry Stevenson at 206290-0173, who will be able to advise you of the process. Ms. Lisa Bradford and I, as members of the ADOBE Bypass/Highway Development Committee, were given the opportunity to make comments and suggestions on the draft plan. After review, Lisa and I mutually authored a ten page preliminary review analysis. One of our opening paragraphs stated: “ Lisa and I propose that there is much in the draft plan that needs to be either removed, revised, rewritten, reevaluated, and/or the like.” An official ADOBE position on the draft plan will be made when a final plan review is established. ADOBE understands that the final draft proposal will be completed in late 2023, or sometime in 2024.

Thanks to ADOBEs Membership Chairperson, Ms. Terri Klucar, ADOBE now has a new Web Page – adobegoldcanyon.com. Terri has the expertise and drive to effectuate this action and ADOBE is so thankful to Terri for all her hard and dedicated work to make this happen. If you have any photos of Gold Canyon, or issues that you feel could be included in the Web Page, please forward the photos/information to Terri at theklucars@hotmail.com. Terri, as the Web

GREETINGS TO ALL ADOBE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS

Master, will evaluate all submissions. ADOBE also give thanks to Gold Canyon Community Lady, Ms. Sue Schaffer – new owner of “The Live It Well Place” - who for many years has supported and paid for the ADOBE Web Page. Thank you Sue - it is greatly appreciated and good luck in your new adventure.

Kudos are extended to Ms. Eva Dupa of the Superstition Foothills HOA (SF HOA), who, along with her staff, have finalized and submitted their application to the federal government to effectuate a Firewise City program within the SF HOA area. Eva has been the consummate leader in this effort. The application is a required process in order to receive federal funds that will assist the HOA in ridding the HOA area of dried weeds, brush, branches, and other debris, along with eradicating invasive plants. All we need to do, regrettably, is look around Gold Canyon and see how the devastating “Stinknet Plant” has destroyed our vanishing natural landscape. To say this invasive plant is out of control is a mega understatement. ADOBE is proud to be the Gold Canyon organization selected to spearhead the Firewise City effort in Gold Canyon. Most important to the process is that it takes a community leader like Eva, for example, within each HOA/area to take the action necessary to be successful in this effort. If you are interested in starting the Firewise City application process, please call ADOBE Secretary, Ms. Lisa Bradford at 480-238-0786 for information.

Wishing everyone a most beautiful and Happy July 4th - let’s fly our stalwart American Flag – a flag of Freedom, Liberty and Justice for all, and may that forever be.

Staff Picks Of The Month

Opie and Cleigh by Gary Nine, recommended by Trish

Fantastic debut novel by a local author! A popular cheerleader is murdered, and the students, schoolteachers and officials all come together to support each other. The killer now has developed a taste for killing, will he be caught in time before he kills again. Opie and Cleigh is suspenseful and really brings together how a community can come together when tragedy hits.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett, recommended by Dennis

This was a fun read if you like stories about the wee folk. Emily Wilde is an expert on faeries. She is doing research on an elusive class of faeries she calls the Hidden Ones. To do this she must live in a small, isolated cottage in a small village near the forest where they can occasionally be found. She is fine with this as she doesn’t like dealing with people. To her dismay, Windell Bambleby shows up at her doorstep and wants to join her investigation. He is the opposite of her in that he likes the comforts of life and people. He is a published expert on faeries, and she has heard that he has others do the work and then takes the credit. She doesn’t want that to happen to her. During

her investigations she encounters abductions, possessed children and encounters fairy royalty.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, recommended by Meg

“The House in the Cerulean Sea” is a captivating book that takes readers on a journey of love, acceptance, and the power of found family. T.J. Klune’s whimsical writing style brings to life a vibrant world filled with extraordinary characters, each with their own struggles and unique magical abilities. This heartwarming tale explores themes of identity and the importance of embracing differences, reminding us of the profound impact kindness and empathy can have. With its poignant message and uplifting storyline, The House in the Cerulean Sea is a mustread that will leave you believing in the magic of compassion and the strength of human connection.

The Bookshop of Second Chances by Jackie Fraser, recommended by Megan C.

If you love books about books and are looking for a feel-good read by the pool, pick up The Bookshop of Second Chances! Thea is coasting through life when some unexpected changes leave her bewildered about what comes next. Family ties lead her to a small coastal town in Scotland and its local

bookshop. After being hired by the gruff yet handsome bookseller Edward, Thea quickly realizes that the Scottish town may be just as complicated as home. Fraser’s modern, conversational, and quirky prose brings her characters to life with whimsy and depth. This book was a joy and got me out of a reading slump!

The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay and Knock at the Cabin, recommended by Megan S.

A family vacation gone horribly wrong is at the center of this book and its movie version, which came out just this year. Both book and movie wrestle with the concepts of family, devotion, and the hard choices we all make in life, though the movie varies from the book just enough to make it interesting. I’ll be a typical reader and say “the book was better,” but both kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen next. Warning: both book and movie contain several instances of physical violence.

We Need Your Help

Wreaths Across America have been in existence since 1992 and are famously known as decorating the Arlington National Cemetery with wreaths. Their goal is placing wreaths on every veteran’s grave in all cemeteries nationwide to remember, honor and pay tribute to their sacrifices!

This year is our 3rd year at the Mountain View Cemetery in Mesa, AZ honoring the 2000 Veterans who are interred. The last two years we have been able to honor ALL the veterans interred there. So far 500 living wreaths have been sponsored this year, but we need to have your help in sponsoring 1500 more wreaths.

People who would like to sponsor a wreath, the cost is only $17 per wreath. As the attachment shows, you can also purchase different sponsorships. For $1700 you can be a corporate sponsor. I will continually announce Corporate Sponsors as they purchase the 100 wreaths!

For a $5,000 donation, you will also be announced in the Wreaths Across America National website as well as in their national newsletter.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 2560 will be coordinating with other organizations to sell and place wreaths on all Veteran gravesites at the Mountain View Cemetery. Other organizations who have joined are VFW and VFW Auxiliary Post 7968; Daughters of the American Revolution and there will be more joining to sell the wreaths.

People who are interested in sponsoring wreaths can purchase directly from the organizations listed above or they can directly purchase it online from MOPH Chapter 2560 at this website: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/AZ0190P

I encourage you to purchase as soon as you can as the wreaths are made in Maine and they would like to make sure they have enough people to help make the living wreaths.

On December 16, 2023, the ceremony will be at the Mountain View Cemetery starting at 9:30am. Then at 10:00am, we will start laying the wreaths on the Veterans Graves. This is a coordinated time in order that Nationwide every participating cemetery will start laying their wreaths at the same time.

We also can use the help to unload the semi when it comes in (which is a couple of days before December 16, 2023) and/ or help place the wreaths on the veteran graves on December 16th. Those who would like to partake in the honor of doing this for our Veterans, please let me know as I am creating a list. This is a great family affair to help educate our children about what freedom is.

We have set our goal for 2000 wreaths; we need a lot of help in sponsoring the wreaths as well as unloading and placing them on the gravesites! I hope you will be able to help us achieve our goal to honor in covering all the veteran gravesites.

If you know of any other business or individual who would like to sponsor a wreath, please have them reach out to Nancy Fassbender 520-280-4715.

DOG LANDSCAPES A TALE OF TWO FOXES

Arizona is home to three species of fox, and we may have two of them locally, the Kit and Grey Fox. The third species, the Red Fox, has a limited presence in Arizona and, to my knowledge, has not been seen in Gold Canyon.

climbing trees, thanks to its partially retractable and curved claws. Its diet includes small mammals, birds, fruits, and insects. It will sometimes bury prey to eat later.

The Kit Fox is listed as a species of concern by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation and is not legal to hunt. Urban expansion, agriculture, and the proliferation of invasive plant species have led to declines habitat for the Kit Fox. The Grey Fox, while not currently listed as threatened in the state, may face similar threats in the future.

The color photo (by George Lloyd) shows a Grey Fox, plainly showing the black strip the length of its tail. It is also carrying a bird that it dug up in Mr. Lloyd’s yard.

The other photo is from our game camera. I’m pinning my hope that it is a kit fox based on the ears, size, and the fact that we only get its picture at night.

The Kit Fox is the smallest, measuring about 15-20 inches in length and weighs 3-6 pounds. Its fur is predominantly tan or gray with a white underbelly. It has the largest ears, which are more pointed than the Grey Fox. In contrast, the Grey Fox is slightly larger, measuring around 20-25 inches in length and weighing between 7-15 pounds. The Grey Fox has a grizzled gray coat with reddish-brown accents on its back and sides. Both foxes have long bushy tails with a black tip, but the Grey Fox’s tail has a black stripe running the length of its tail that the Kit Fox lacks.

Both fox species inhabit Arizona, but they occupy different ecosystems. The Kit Fox thrives in arid regions such as desert grasslands and semi-arid scrublands, including the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. On the other hand, the Grey Fox prefers more diverse habitats like woodlands, canyons, and mountainous areas. In our area these habits overlap.

The Kit Fox is nocturnal, relying on its exceptional hearing and keen sense of smell to locate prey, which consists mainly of small mammals, reptiles, and insects. It is also an adept burrower, utilizing underground dens for shelter. In contrast, the Grey Fox is primarily active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk, and it is one of the few canids capable of

HEALING NATURALLY

Betty* had just spent the first thirty minutes of our visit telling me part of her life story. She spoke of the emotional and physical abuse she had endured in her youth, about her recent divorce, and about the chronic physical problems that I suspected were linked to her difficult past. At the same time that she was telling me revealing facts about herself, she was also building a wall between us with her hardened demeanor and body language. She was angry with the world and herself.

Why was Betty angry? She believed a lie. She had been told so many stories about who she was that she had constructed a version of herself that was broken, unloved, and unlovable. The lies others had told her (and she had told herself) about who she was had become her reality. In her mind, Betty did not believe she deserved to be healthy and happy, so she unconsciously pushed away any attempts to help her.

It would have been easy for me to think, “She’s rude and defiant. She doesn’t really want my help,” and to react to her sharply. Instead, I took a moment to consider the fact that she

BEING THE CHANGE IN OUR WORLD

had made the considerable effort to be with me now. I chose to look past the façade she presented, and I saw a woman of courage and surprising strength. She had been through so much, and she was, in fact, trying to rediscover her authentic self by seeking help one more time.

When I told her what I was thinking, I saw an almost immediate change in her countenance. I wasn’t offering her flattery, but a heartfelt recognition of her character strengths. It was as though she was both surprised and relieved to rediscover these traits within herself. My words were a witness to her to embrace her true courage and strength— her authentic self.

This is the miraculous power that we possess: we each have the choice to see the goodness and light within the other and express that to them. They may choose to receive it or not, but it may spark the miracle of the other seeing themselves in a new light that will continue to grow brighter within them.

I know that if I want to see change in the world, I must first be that change. This happens when I choose to approach others with an open heart, knowing that we are all more alike than different and that we have received similar wounds through different experiences. When I see myself in another, I set aside judgment and allow understanding and compassion to flow.

This miracle of seeing and affirming the light in someone else also benefits me. Having an open heart means I learn to see past what I might think of as character flaws and draw inspiration and knowledge from anyone I meet. It also helps me learn to see myself in a kinder and gentler way.

If I can help one other person rediscover in himself or herself positive traits like courage, kindness, or compassion, how many lives might that affect? How would her more positive outlook radiate through her relationships with family, friends, and coworkers? We each have the choice to be the source of the ripple effect that can spread through our world—and be the change we want to see around us.

Where Has All the Music Gone?

Yes, I “remember how the music used to play “ as “ I take those old records off the shelf ”. Then I might like “to teach the world to sing”, or maybe just travel “Country Roads” all by myself.

So now “ I’m Homeward Bound“ and on a “ Rocky Mountain High”. Oh but then, remember when we heard about “the day the music died”?

So,, where has all the music gone?

To “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show”, or to some Margarita island fun? I know that’s where I would go!

Well, “Hey, Don’t Worry, Be Happy”!

“The Beat Goes On” today, but only if you’ll remember, “how that music used to play… Bye, bye…”

Pie anyone??

LIVE IN FREEDOM CHOOSE TO BE KIND

July brings to mind things like summer vacations, backyard BBQs and pool parties. Words like Independence and Freedom are historically celebrated for Canadians on July 1st and Americans on July 4th.

To live in Freedom means we have the opportunity to decide what we do with information, how we interpret our lives, how we dictate our future, change our minds, or make new decisions. Everything is a choice. Our choice. And in choosing, we can live freely.

Our lives are made up of an infinite number of choices. Most decisions are small and only slightly impactful, but it is these micro-choices that create our long-term patterns. Our habits are the total of our daily micro decisions.

To be kind is a choice and can easily become a habit. We all are born with a kindness (compassion) instinct. Charles Darwin considered the “sympathy instinct” as one of the strongest human instincts which allowed our species to survive and flourish. It is this instinct that we need to nurture, practice, and allow being kind to develop into a habit that will change not only your life but the lives you touch.

Being kind and practicing kindness feels good. First of all connecting with others through kind deeds allows us to meet our basic psychological needs of relatedness and belonging. Performing acts of kindness can also increase life satisfaction, positive mood, and peer acceptance. Physically it stimulates the release of serotonin and oxytocin, which can increase trust and reduce fear and anxiety. Observing others perform kind acts and more importantly being kind to ourselves makes us happier.

Did you know that Cheer Up the Lonely Day is on July 11, an awareness day designed to recognize and promote social cheer. Whether it’s a close friend, family member, old neighbor, new classmate, parent, child, or anybody else in your life, if you know anyone who is lonely or going through a tough time, you could surprise them with a visit, a hug, or organize a get-together to spread the spirit of friendliness! This day serves as a reminder to all of us that everyone needs a little extra love and attention, especially the lonely. You could also choose this day to express gratitude to anyone who has ever reached out to you while you were struggling. A small act of kindness can make a big difference and always brings a reward.

How ever you celebrate Freedom, for this day, this week and for the month of July, we challenge you to make a choice to bring kindness into your day, whether to yourself, to a stranger or to your friends and family. The choice, to be kind, can change your life.

Evening In Paris—Awards Banquet

On May 18th a celebration honoring my outstanding Brokers and Agents for their 2022 production was my way of saying Thank You!

The event was catered by The Party Diva and our Photographer was The very talented, Joanne West!

WINGS AWARD—WINNERS FOR FLYING ABOVE THE CROWD!

A Fresh Welcome for Apache Junction by Pinal County

The monument at the northeast entrance to Apache Junction on State Route 88 and Hackamore Road is a well-known landmark for locals and visitors alike. However, it's no secret that the area around the monument has suffered damage from wildfires over the years. Fortunately, a group of dedicated community members came together to revitalize the monument.

LEGENDS AWARD WINNERS TOP COMPANY AWARD!

PRESIDENTS AWARD SECOND HIGHEST AWARD!

Sandie Russell is a deep-rooted resident of the Apache Junction community and representative of Modern Woodmen of America. Sandie recently approached District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy to locate a project Modern Woodmen of America could invest in that would help make improvements for the community. Supervisor Serdy, his District Administrator Connie Van Driel, Liz Langenbach, Director, Apache Junction Parks and Recreation, and Alan Sinclair, Owner, Siphon Draw Fire and Fuels, worked together to identify the monument leading into the City limits on SR88, which suffered vegetative damage during a devastating brush fire May 7, 2020. The monument has been a longfavored pullout and photo op for visitors along SR88.

THE TEAM AWARD!

INNOVATOR & CREATOR OF THE YEAR!

Taste of GC!

Working with the Bureau of Land Management, Modern Woodmen identified native vegetation species and purchased them for the project. The City of Apache Junction donated four mature 35foot saguaros that were salvaged from the Parks and Recreation administration building expansion at the Mulit-Generational Center. Siphon Draw Fire and Fuels provided planting and watering services for one year to ensure the plantings take root. Local residents Dan and Lisa Kelly also assisted with planting.

The monument itself also received much-needed attention, getting patched up and re-painted, ensuring that it remains a striking symbol of the City's entrance for years to come.

Lastly, Dawn Carroll also received the OUTSTANDING OFFICE MANAGER, and Riki Sadosky received the OUTSTANDING EXECUTIVE COORDINATOR

Thank you to all my Agents for another outstanding year!

Supervisor Serdy commented, "I am glad to lead this collaborative effort between the County, City, Sandie Russell, and Alan Sinclair, to help restore the vegetation around one of the most iconic sights in Apache Junction. I particularly want to thank Sandie and Alan, two dedicated community members, for their efforts in bringing this popular monument back to life."

Recipe from The Pioneer Woman.com

You may ask “what is a buckle”? A buckle is a streuseltopped cake with loads of fresh fruit stirred into the batter. It is more “cakey” than cobblers or crisps and more fruity than many coffee cakes!

INGREIDIENTS:

FOR THE STREUSEL:

• ½ c unsalted butter, melted

• 1/3 c firmly packed light brown sugar

• ¼ c granulated sugar

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1 c all-purpose flour

• Pinch of Salt

FOR THE BUCKLE:

• 2 ¼ c all-purpose flour

• 2 tsp baking powder

• ½ tsp kosher salt

• ¾ c granulated sugar

• 6 tbls unsalted butter, softened

• 2 large eggs

• ½ c whole milk

• 2 tsp lemon zest

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• *3 c “Fresh” blueberries, divided (rinsed & dried)

• Nonstick cooking spray

Preheat Oven to 375 degrees.

Any questions or comments please contact Marsha at Marsha.Dorris.Realtor@gmail.com

18 | Superstition Living

FOR THE STREUSEL: Stir together the melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Add the flour and salt, stirring until combined. Set aside while making the cake.

FOR THE BUCKLE: Stir together the flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Beat the butter and sugar at medium speed until creamy using a handheld mixer or a stand mixer. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until just combined after each addition. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, beating until just combined after each addition. Stir in the lemon zest and vanilla, then gently fold in 2 cups of the blueberries.

Spray a 9” x 9” baking dish the nonstick cooking spray. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan; sprinkle the top of the batter with the remaining 1 cup of blueberries. Crumble the streusel mixture using your fingers, and sprinkle it evenly over the berries and batter.

Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, 40- 45 minutes. Let cool 20 minutes before slicing, if eating warm. This Blueberry Buckle can be made up to three days in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

*TIPS: Toss 2 cups of the blueberries in flour. Shake off all excess flour. This helps them from sinking to the bottom of the cake. Fresh berries are generally best in buckles and most blueberry cake recipes because, even if using frozen berries, when thawed and patted dry, previously frozen fruit tends to release more moisture than fresh fruit which can impact the bake time and rising. Thawed frozen fruit can be used with more success in desserts like cobblers and crisps. You can substitute other fruit like blackberries, strawberries, diced peaches, plums or nectarines. You can even try a combo of several different fruits!

4TH OF JULY CRINKLE COOKIES

These cookies are light and fluffy on the inside and sweet and crunchy on the outside!

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 c salted butter (softened to room temperature)

• 2 c granulated sugar

• 4 large eggs

• 2 Tbsp vanilla extract

• 4 ½ c all-purpose flour

• 4 tsp baking powder

• Powdered sugar for rolling cookies in

• *Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Red & Blue OR regular paste food coloring (can purchase at Walmart/Michaels)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cream together the butter and sugar until completely combined. Add in eggs and mix until light and fluffy. Add vanilla until fully incorporated. Add in the baking powder and mix. Then add the flour and mix until just combined. Separate dough into two equal portions. Color one portion of the dough red and the other one blue.

*If you use the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring, use 9 drops of red for half the dough and for the other half, 9 drops of blue plus 2 drops of red. These are more concentrated colors. After coloring the dough, refrigerate it for at least two hours.

When ready to bake, roll the dough into 1 ½-2” balls and then roll in powdered sugar. Place the cookie balls on parchment lined cookie sheets. Bake in a 350 oven for about 10 minutes. When you take the cookies out, take a drinking glass and flatten the cookies. Keep the dough in the refrigerator between batches. The powdered sugar on the outside of the cookies will bake up nicer if it is applied to the refrigerated dough. Yields about 32 cookies. Allow cookies to cool before packaging and storing them.

CAN YOU BUILD AN ESTATE PLAN LIKE A HOUSE?

If you’ve ever been involved in building a house — or even if you’ve just heard about it — you know that there’s a well-defined process to be followed. But here’s something to think about: Some of the same steps connected to constructing a home are the same as those needed to build an estate plan.

What are those steps? Here are some to consider:

• Get the right “builder.” Unless you’re an experienced do-it-yourselfer, you’ll probably have to hire someone to build a house for you. Of course, you’ll make your wishes known about what you want your house to look like, but you’ll be relying on the builder’s expertise. And the same is true with estate planning — you’ll want to share your goals and vision with a legal professional who’s experienced in creating comprehensive estate plans.

• Build a strong foundation. “Every house needs a strong foundation” isn’t just a metaphor — it’s true for every house that’s built. And when you create an estate plan, you also need a foundation that includes whatever basic elements are appropriate for your situation — a will, a living trust, power of attorney and so on.

• Make the necessary additions. Even if you’re pleased with your new house, you may eventually decide to make some changes, such as adding on a new bedroom or bathroom. And the structure of your estate plan may need to undergo some modifications, too. For example, if you drew up a will two decades ago, but haven’t looked at it since, it may be out of date — especially if you’ve experienced changes in your life, such as new children or a divorce and remarriage. That’s why it’s a good idea to review your estate plans at least every few years.

• Protect your investment. Of course, when you build a new house, you’ll have to insure it properly. And while there’s no actual “insurance policy” for an estate plan, you do have ways to protect it. For one thing, you need to make sure beneficiary designations on retirement plans, investment accounts, insurance policies and other assets are correct. These designations are powerful and can even supersede the instructions in your estate-planning documents. So, as mentioned, if you’ve had significant life changes involving your family, you need to ensure your beneficiary designations are updated if you want to protect how insurance proceeds, investments and other assets are distributed.

• Watch for mistakes. It’s unfortunate, but mistakes do happen in home construction. Water stains can indicate that water is seeping through cracks in the foundation. Or cracks in retaining walls and garage floors could be a sign that the concrete structures were installed improperly. Estate plans can also contain errors or bad choices. Some are inadvertent, such as failing to put intended assets into a trust, but others are done with the best of intentions, such as naming adult children as joint owners of your assets. Even if your children are quite responsible, this move could give their creditors access to your money. If you want your children to be able to step in as needed, you could find other methods, such as giving them power of attorney.

Following these “construction” techniques can help you create an estate plan that can last a lifetime — and beyond.
