We are just a few weeks away from the kickoff of the Gold Canyon 2024-2025 season, and it will be filled with a lot of fun things to do.
On October 26, 2024, the Gold Canyon Chamber of Commerce will host its firstever “Annual Superstition Classics Car Show.” Vendor booths are now available and I understand they are filling up quickly. There will be awards for car entries, food, music, raffles, a photo booth, and much more. If you are interested in entering your classic vehicle, becoming a sponsor of the show (four different sponsorships), or hosting a booth, visit goldcanyonchamber. org or call 480-238-0786.
ADOBE is happy and proud to announce that the Gold Canyon Flag - finally - will be on sale at the Classics Car Show. In 2003 ADOBE held a contest for citizens to submit their masterpiece on what the Gold Canyon flag should look like. Mr. Phillip Rauso’s submission won the day. ADOBEs own VP Rick Hardina came in second. You will be able to purchase the flag in multiple sizes. The flag will then be ordered and it takes about one month to arrive. A large flag will be on display for your view and analysis. Your American-made flag will be crafted like the flag on display, and I can
attest to its top quality. A bit pricey, but well worth it for your home, office, or outside pleasure.
ADOBE proudly announces that Mr. Harold Christ will be our presenter at our kickoff October 2024 ADOBE Meeting. The meeting will be held at the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel, with social time at 6:15 pm and the meeting at 7 pm. Christ was an East Valley Developer who set his eyes on a piece of land where he decided to build a golf course and resort with the hopes of beginning a new community. That community eventually received the name Gold Canyon. Come to the meeting a let Mr. Christ tell you all about it. More On Mr. Christ in the October 2024 edition of Superstition Living.
On November 21, 2024, the Honorable Jeff Serdy, Pinal County Supervisor for District 5 will be our presenter – telling us about his plans for Pinal County per se, and Gold Canyon specifically for the next four years. More on this in the November edition of Superstition Living.
And then it will be our “Christmas Tree Lighting” event at the Gold Canyon Country Club in December 2024; more on that later.
We hope everyone will have an awesome September as we ever so slowly pass from the heat of the summer sun to the cool breezes of Fall in beautiful Gold Canyon, Arizona.

WEED CONTROL 101
Ah, the gentle winter rains of the Sonoran Desert! When they come every two weeks or so, they are a blessing. They replenish our drought-stricken aquifers and provide a beautiful display of spring wildflowers. On the negative side, they also generate the bane of anyone who enjoys a clean, orderly landscape: weeds!
The most widely used strategy in our area is chemical application. There are two types of chemicals: pre-emergent and post-emergent. Pre-emergents are applied to the landscape either as a granule or liquid and must be wateredin to activate the chemical, moving it to the underlying soil where it forms a protective layer that prevents weeds from germinating. Depending on the rate and method of application, you can expect to get about six months of weed control.
If weeds are visible, you must rely on post-emergents. There are two categories of chemical on the market: contact and systemic. Contact herbicides kill on contact with the plant’s leaves, usually within a few days or even hours, but often only the above ground part of the plant is killed leaving the root to resprout. Examples of this class of chemicals are 2-4-D and Diquat. Systemic chemicals are absorbed into the plant and travel from its leaves to the roots thereby killing the entire plant. Plants treated with a systemic are slower to show signs of damage, sometimes taking up to three weeks
is NOT better. Also, anyone applying chemicals to land they do not own must hold a license from the Arizona Office of Pest Management. This includes commercial landscapers or simply one neighbor helping another. Employing an unlicensed entity is a risk that should be carefully weighed before engaging services.
Of course, the most labor-intensive form of weed control is plain old pulling, hoeing, and weed eating. If you have weeds already growing in your landscape, this is probably the first step to achieving a clean, orderly yard. Round-Up may kill the weed, but it won’t pull them out for you. Once you have

LIVE IN THE LIGHT
Just the other day I was in the checkout lane at a small locally owned store, the young lady checker glanced at the front door, and said Good Morning, Sunshine to the older gentleman entering the store. I mentioned to her that hearing this greeting made me smile. The young lady said, oh, we say that to each other every morning, somedays he says it first, but we always greet each other this way every day. I thought to myself, how amazing and kind that gesture is, and then I wondered, what does “Good Morning, Sunshine” mean and why do we say it?
“Good morning, sunshine” is a phrase we use when we greet someone who makes us smile. It conveys the idea that the person being addressed is a source of joy, happiness, and positivity in the speaker’s life, much like the sun is a source of light and warmth. I like to think of them as sunshine people.
Who are the ‘Sunshine People’ that you have in your life? Are they a ray of sunshine, do they brighten your day, do they make you feel valued and loved? Do you know a Sunshine person who radiates warmth, kindness, and positivity? Having Sunshine people in your life provides numerous benefits. They help you realize your true potential. They may see things in us that we may do not see in ourselves. They
will always recognize our strengths and encourage us to work on our weaknesses. How grateful we are when they push us to be our best, even if we don’t feel like it. These beautiful sunshine people will always celebrate our successes and will then help us overcome our failures. Their warm and uplifting energy embraces you and surrounds you with light.
I believe that having Sunshine people in our lives is an invaluable treasure, and that we should cherish them with all our heart and soul. But I think that most importantly one must also be a ‘Sunshine person’.
Becoming a Sunshine person involves cultivating positivity, kindness, and warmth. Here are some steps to help you shine even brighter:
Smile More: A genuine smile is contagious. It not only lifts your mood but also brightens others’ days. Practice smiling even when you don’t feel like it.
Practice Gratitude: Start your day by appreciating the little things. Write down three things you’re grateful for each morning. This sets a positive tone for the day.
Spread Kindness: Perform random acts of kindness. Hold the door for someone, compliment a colleague, or help a stranger. Small gestures make a big difference.
Connect with Others: Build meaningful relationships. Listen actively, empathize, and be present when interacting with people.
Mind Your Words: Use uplifting language. Avoid negativity, gossip, or complaining. Encourage and inspire others instead.
Self-Care: Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Get enough rest, eat well, exercise, and practice mindfulness.
Good morning sunshine quotes; Can be a delightful way to start your day with positivity and to share uplifting messages with others. Here a favorite of mine: “Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” – James Matthew Barrie.
Good Morning, Sunshine – Try greeting someone, yourself, your family, your animals or a stranger every morning for September with this happy and warm energy. Starting your day like this is not only essential to your happiness and wellbeing but will radiate rays of sunshine that will energize others.
Remember that saying Good Morning, Sunshine is a way of acknowledging the profound and positive impact that this person has on you and demonstrates how their presence makes the world feel a little brighter.
To live your best life, become a Sunshine person, embrace the light with an open heart, allow the love and kindness for others to guide you and may your light shine brightly for all to see.

FASTING AND THE HEALING WISDOM OF THE BODY
We live in a miracle! The body’s amazing functions—including healing—are miraculous beyond our comprehension. Fasting is one of the ways our bodies repair and heal themselves.
A 2019 study published in The New England Journal of Medicine called “Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Health, Aging, and Disease” found that “Evidence is accumulating that eating in a 6-hour period and fasting for 18 hours can trigger a metabolic switch from glucosebased to ketone-based energy, with increased stress resistance, increased longevity, and a decreased incidence of diseases, including cancer and obesity.”
The beauty of fasting is that it’s a simple practice that’s available to everyone. Of course, it’s always important to check with your healthcare provider before doing fasting to make sure any existing medical conditions wouldn’t be adversely affected.
The results you can achieve depend on the length of your fasting time.
Intermittent fasting is considered to be a 13-15 hour fast in which human growth hormone (HGH) increases and fat burning begins.
The next phase of fasting is autophagy, which starts approximately 16-18 hours into the fasting process. This term refers to the cellular detoxification and repair of the body. This results in reduced inflammation, improved immune function, balanced blood sugar and insulin levels with weight loss, and improved energy and focus.
24-hour fasting (one meal a day). In addition to the above benefits, a neurotransmitter called GABA is produced, causing calmness and relaxation. Longer fasts also promote autoimmune healing and intestinal stem cell regeneration.
There are also fasts that stretch to 36, 48, and 72 hours and longer that have more health benefits. These should be done under medical supervision.
Tips for a Successful Fast
Remember that much of fasting is done at night and while sleeping so the fast you choose won’t seem so long. Choose your fast according to what you want to accomplish, then observe the body’s miraculous work through fasting!

Staff Picks From August FROM AJ PUBLIC LIBRARY
Birding with Benefits by Sarah T. Dubb, recommended by Megan C.
Quirky Celeste and strong but silent John are two fortysomethings who have been unlucky in love. When first impressions go awry, the pair find themselves partnering for Tucson’s biggest bird-watching competition… and posing as a fake couple! But as they adventure through the Arizona wilderness, they find themselves watching more than just birds. This sweet and steamy romance is the debut novel from Pima County Public Librarian Sarah T. Dubb. Be on the lookout for Sarah’s upcoming author talk and book signing at AJPL during our 2025 Winter Lecture Series!
When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion by Julie Satow, recommended by Megan S.
You don’t have to be interested in fashion to enjoy this history of department stores and the women who ran them. Satow paints a fascinating picture of what department stores used to be – a place to escape, a place to dream, and a place to get everything you needed to be stylish under one roof. She follows both the history of major department stores across the country as well as some of the influential women who guided them towards success. As you might imagine, these women faced challenges both within and outside of their companies, and sometimes even from themselves. I enjoyed Satow’s writing style and came away from this book having learned so much.
Flip the Script by Lyla Lee, recommended by Diana G.
Flip the Script is a book written about the K-Pop generation, once known primarily for their Korean boy band music groups. This book tells a story of two teen girls, Minjee and Hana, trying out for parts in a K-Drama Series called Faded Destiny. Both Minjee and Hana get parts in the drama series.
Hana, who is openly queer, falls in love with Minjee. Minjee also falls for Hana, but fears her parents and friends will no longer accept her if they knew she was queer. While trying to decide how to share their new relationship with their friends and agents,
Minjee and Hana find out that they have been scripted in a new K-Pop television series.
I enjoyed this lighthearted story and would read it again.
The Good Part by Sophie Cousens, recommended by Leah So enjoyable. I listened to the audiobook on Libby! A book about time travel and life choices. I really liked the ideas this book highlighted. There is no perfect time in your life, at every point you have good stuff and bad stuff. The choices you make in life are important. It’s important to live your life, good and bad, just enjoy the journey. If you enjoyed The Midnight Library, I would recommend this book for a lighter read on a similar topic!
Ordinary Angels, recommended by Sandy K.
I saw this movie’s synopsis on Wowbrary, thought it looked interesting and placed it on hold directly from the website. The hold came in and my husband and I watched it this weekend. We both really enjoyed it! It was based on a true story and so heartwarming! One woman specifically, but then many people in this community, truly came together to help this family in their time of need. If I didn’t know this was a true story, I would have thought it was pure fiction! Ordinary Angels are everywhere! (They also showed pictures of the real family at the end – love that too!)
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, recommended by River W.
This book is adorable and fascinating with twists you don’t expect. Themes of found family, quirky characters, and a dash of magical realism add to this cute love story.
Staff Book Club Pick: The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell
Our Staff Book Club pick for July was this twisty mystery centered on a cozy baking competition at a stately, mysterious manor. We enjoyed the building suspense and the development of the characters over the course of the novel. The plot moves along well, with lots of clues and very human characters. The ending led to a lot of discussion about the moral and legal aspects of the consequences for the characters. Best of all, AJPL staff had our own little “Bake Week” competition! Grace’s blueberry cream cheese bars were the winner - find the recipe in our Recipe Exchange next time you stop by!
REAL ESTATE FOR YOU LORI BLANK
ASSOCIATE BROKER LORI BLANK & ASSOCIATES, LLC
Buying a second home is an exciting milestone. Whether it’s a vacation retreat, an investment property, or a future retirement haven, the decision involves many considerations. One of the most important questions you’ll face is whether to rent out your first home or sell it. Both options have their pros and cons, and the right choice depends on your financial goals, market conditions, and personal circumstances. Let’s discuss the key factors to help you make an informed decision.
RENTING OUT YOUR FIRST HOME
Pros:
• Steady Income Stream: Renting your first home can provide a consistent income stream, which can help offset the mortgage on your second property.
• Appreciation Potential: By holding onto your first home, you may benefit from property appreciation over time, potentially increasing your long-term wealth.
• Tax Benefits: Rental properties come with various tax deductions, including mortgage interest, property taxes, and maintenance expenses, which can reduce your overall tax burden.
BUYING A SECOND HOME: SHOULD YOU RENT OR SELL YOUR FIRST PROPERTY?
Cons:
• Landlord Responsibilities: Managing a rental property requires time and effort. You’ll need to handle tenant issues, maintenance, and potentially hire a property manager.
• Market Risks: Real estate markets can be unpredictable. If property values decrease or rental demand drops, your investment could be less profitable.
• Financing Challenges: Qualifying for a mortgage on your second home may be more difficult if you already have an existing mortgage. Lenders may scrutinize your debt-to-income ratio more closely.
SELLING YOUR FIRST HOME
Pros:
• Immediate Equity: Selling your first home can provide a significant amount of cash, which can be used as a down payment on your second property or to pay off debts.
• Simplified Finances: Without the responsibilities of a rental property, you can focus entirely on your new home and its associated costs.
• Market Timing: If the real estate market is favorable, selling could maximize your profits, especially if your home has appreciated significantly.
Cons:
• Loss of Rental Income: By selling, you forgo the potential rental income and long-term appreciation benefits of keeping the property.
• Transaction Costs: Selling a home involves costs such as real estate agent commissions, closing fees, and possible repairs or upgrades to make the home market-ready.
• Emotional Attachment: Parting with a home full of memories can be emotionally challenging, especially if it’s your first home.
MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION
To determine the best course of action, consider the following steps:
Evaluate Your Financial Situation: Assess your current financial health, including income, expenses, savings, and debt. Determine how a second home purchase and either renting or selling your first property will impact your finances.
Analyze Market Conditions: Research the real estate market in your area to understand trends in property values, rental demand, and economic conditions.
Consult Professionals: Speak with a real estate agent, financial advisor, and mortgage lender to get expert advice tailored to your unique situation.
Consider Your Long-Term Goals: Reflect on your personal and financial goals, such as retirement plans, investment strategies, and lifestyle preferences.
Ready to explore your options for buying a second home? Whether you decide to rent or sell your first property, we are here to help you every step of the way. Contact us today for personalized guidance and expert advice to make your next real estate move a success!

WHAT CAN INSURANCE DO FOR YOU?
It’s probably not on your calendar, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And it’s indeed a pretty good idea to be aware of what life insurance can do for you.
Life insurance can help you in two main ways. First, life insurance policies offer a death benefit that can assist your family if you’re no longer around. And second, some types of life insurance offer the chance to build cash value, which can work for you during your lifetime.
Let’s look at the death benefit first. If something were to happen to you, your life insurance proceeds could help your family meet at least three major needs:
Paying a mortgage – The biggest expense many families face is their monthly mortgage. If you weren’t around, could your family continue paying the mortgage? Or would they have to move? With a sufficient life insurance death benefit, they could remain in their home, meeting the monthly mortgage payments, or perhaps pay off the loan entirely (although this might not be in their best financial interest).
Paying for education – If you have young children, you may already be saving for their college education — because you know college is expensive. Without your income, would college, or some other form of post-secondary education or training, still be realistic? Again, the proceeds from an insurance policy could make the difference.
Paying off debts – You might have a car loan, credit card debt or other financial obligations. If your surviving spouse is a joint account holder for these debts, they could still be liable for paying them off. But insurance proceeds could be used to retire the debts immediately, or over time.
All life insurance policies offer a death benefit. But permanent insurance, unlike term insurance, also offers the chance to build cash value — which can be a valuable supplement to your IRA and 401(k) or other retirement accounts.
A cash value policy such as whole life also can provide flexibility for changing financial needs or emergencies in retirement. And here’s another key advantage: Because this type of policy provides fixed, guaranteed returns, it is not dependent on the performance of the financial markets and is thus insulated from the market downturns that can happen while you’re retired. So, taking money from the cash value of your whole life policy may help you avoid selling investments that have temporarily declined in value.
Keep in mind, though, that the premiums for a cash value policy will generally be substantially higher than those for term insurance. That’s why some people choose to “buy term and invest the difference” rather than purchase a permanent life policy with cash value. Whether this strategy is right for you depends on a few different factors, perhaps the most important of which is your ability and willingness to consistently invest the money you would have otherwise placed in a cash value policy.
In any case, should you choose cash value insurance, you generally have three ways to get at the money: withdrawals, loans or surrender of the policy. You’ll want to weigh all the factors involved — including taxes and the effect on the policy’s death benefit — when deciding on how to access the cash value.
Life Insurance Awareness Month ends on Sept. 30. But your need for life insurance, and the potential benefits it provides, can last a lifetime.
BUCKWHEAT!
PET OF THE MONTH
Apache Junction Animal Control
By Alice Edwards
Say hello to Buckwheat, he’s a cattle dog mix puppy. He came to us as a stray 2 months ago, I’ve been calling him “Baby Buckwheat” but he’s getting bigger now, we think he’s about 8 months old.
We’d love for him to get his own home, growing up in the shelter is not much fun. He’ll need some training but, he’s a good boy and keeps his room clean at the shelter. He’s a playful boy and gets along with most dogs and would love to have a fenced yard of his own to run and play in. I hope you’ll come down and meet him.
If you’d like some more information on Buckwheat or any of our other animals available for adoption you can visit the city website www. apachejunction.gov under the Pets section.
Apache Junction Animal Control; Open Tuesday - Saturday, 9am to 3pm, located at 725 E Baseline Ave, Apache Junction.

IN THE KITCHEN WITH MARSHA MARSHADORRIS
FROZEN MARGARITA PIE Picture This …
INGREDIENTS:
PRETZEL CRUST—
2 cups small salted pretzel twists
2 Tbsp sugar
4 Tbsp butter, melted
MARGARITA PIE FILLING—
1 cup heavy cream, cold
½ cup fresh lime juice (about 4 limes)
Zest from 1 lime
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
4 Tbsp Tequila
1 Tbsp Triple Sec or Grand Marnier
¼ tsp kosher salt
Green food coloring – 1 drop (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
CRUST — Add pretzels, sugar and butter to a food processor until it resembles wet sand. Press into the bottom and a little up the sides of a lightly greased (with cooking spray) springform pan or 9-inch glass pie plate. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 9 minutes. The pretzel crust does not need to be baked, but it does add a wonderful caramelized flavor and will yield a more stable crust. Cool in freezer while making filling.
FILLING — Add condensed milk, lime juice, lime zest, Tequila, Triple Sec, 1 drop green food coloring and kosher salt to a medium size bowl and whisk until smooth. Set aside. Use an electric mixer with chilled bowl and chilled beaters and whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form (about 3-5minutes/don’t overbeat). Fold half of the whipped cream into the lime juice mixture. Add remaining whipped cream and continue to fold just until incorporated. Pour into the cooled pretzel crust. Sprinkle a little lime zest on top. Put in freezer. After about 15 minutes cover the pie and freeze for at least 8 hours or overnight.
TO SERVE: Set on the counter for about 1015 minutes before serving. You can make additional whipped cream to decorate the top of the pie or you can use Cool Whip. You can leave out the alcohol, or replace the Tequila with more lime juice and the Triple Sec with orange juice for a nonalcoholic version.

”Welcome to Gold Canyon” and the first thing you’ll see, is a tall metal tower dressed up like a tree!
But much like a tree, it’s canopy reaches high as it sheds it’s poison refuse both far and wide.
It seems not to matter what an impact it will make. The invisible radiation is toxic for goodness sake!
This invasive technology is a cause for concern. Don’t dismiss it as progress. Study the facts and learn.
We owe it to our neighbors our businesses and friends, to protect our environment. That’s the message we will send!
