Many years ago, Don Dougherty, a member of the ADOBE Board noticed a 3x5 card on the wall of the Apache Junction Post Office. The card indicated that AZDOT was planning to have a meeting with the citizens of Gold Canyon to discuss issues related to possible changes to RT-60. That was the extent of the advertised citizen meeting. All you had to do was visit the Apache Junction Post Office, look up on the board and read the 3x5 card. Don gave AZDOT an immediate call to find out what was going on. That phone call led to multiple – well advertised by ADOBE - open meetings with thousands of Gold Canyon citizens to discuss AZDOTs RT-60 alternatives. When the dust settled, the citizens of Gold Canyon decided – of the options proposed by AZDOT - they wanted to keep the Gold Canyon area as pristine as it was the day they purchased their homes in this dream community of solitude, peace, quietness, quaintness and serenity. Thus, the vote was to construct a Bypass south of Gold Canyon starting near Mountain View Road and extending to a point near the Florence Junction, allowing for a special exit/entrance to Renaissance traffic.

Although the federal money was allotted and all the miscellaneous hard work was completed for this Bypass, AZDOT decided to spend the money on other projects. Thus, the reason Gold Canyon citizens must live

with the dreadful RT-60 traffic conditions of 2023. I propose the citizens of Gold Canyon would still like their lives free from overbearing traffic, replete with speeders, traffic light runners, jake brake users, backed up turning lanes, and the noise of this calamity echoing horrendously through our canyons, hills and valleys.

The issue of the original Bypass plan is history; that is understood. In the last few years Gold Canyon citizens were told about the perspective of RT-24 being extended east to connect to RT-60 beyond the Renaissance area; ergo Gold Canyon’s new Bypass proposal. Plans were to initiate this process sometime around 2030 or so. The latest news from authorities is however, don’t plan for the RT-24 extension to RT-60 until about 2050; maybe. The reason, we need to concentrate on other more important traffic matters west and south of Gold Canyon, such as finishing the North/South Route, and constructing a new Central Arizona Parkway; we need to take care of all the businesses, developments and citizens in south Pinal County you know. Hence, Gold Canyon, live a few more decades with the misfortune.

A new study called the Gold Canyon Circulation Study was initiated on April 28, 2023. This study consists of a partnership

between Pinal County and AZDOT. Part of that study will evaluate Gold Canyon Street networks to determine potential roadway improvements to support possible arterial network expansion alternatives. For example, when travelling south on Kings Ranch Road (KRR) and you come to the intersection with RT-60, look straight ahead, that’s open land. Should KRR be extended south to connect to some future arterial road south of Gold Canyon? Thus, if you are heading to a point south of Gold Canyon that may work fine, but if your plan is to go east or west, not so much. ADOBE members recently met with members of the Pinal County Department of Public Works to discuss, in part, the Circulation Study. At that meeting ADOBE was assured there would be multiple open meetings with Gold Canyon citizens to gain their input on the study’s suggestions and findings. ADOBE highly and respectfully recommends that all Gold Canyon citizens attend these meetings to give your insights into what you want. Notwithstanding the proverbial deck appearing somewhat stacked against maintaining Gold Canyon’s peaceful, and picturesque beauty, ADOBE will continue to advocate for your needs and wants. Likewise, ADOBE will keep you posted on study happenings.

Have a wonderful June, living the dream, hopefully without the clamor of a superhighway.

The Barrels are Blooming!

Two years ago, the Gold Canyon Garden Club, while preparing for the installation of a new Blue Star Memorial Marker at Boyce Thompson Arboretum, embarked on another landscape overhaul of the area surrounding their original Blue Star Memorial Marker at the Superstition Mountain Museum.

The irrigation timers were replaced, new drip lines were installed, dead plants were removed, and new plants were added. One of the highlighted plants of the area was the addition of six “barrel” cacti in front of the marker. Two years later, they are now in beautiful bloom!

These Barrel Cacti represent the six branches of the military honored by Blue Star Memorial Markers across the country – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Space Force.

The Blue Star Program honors all men and women that serve in the United States Armed Services. This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now NGC, Inc.) adopted this program and began a Blue Star Highway system that covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Blue Star Memorial Highway Markers were placed along the way. The Blue Star was adopted because it had become an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war as well as in churches and businesses.

Stop by the Superstition Mountain Museum and check out the beautifully blooming barrels!

Kenneth deLoera Named PTES

Principal for 2023-2024 School Year

Kenneth deLoera has been named the new principal for Peralta Trail Elementary School, 10965 E. Peralta in Gold Canyon. Prior to his new position deLoera served as assistant principal at Cactus Canyon Junior High for three years and two years as the school’s principal.

“My goals for PTES are really to build on the success they have had in the past,” said deLoera. “They are one of 2 "B" schools in the district and I would love to see them earn an "A" label. I know that is a lot of work but they are a great staff and the kids can do it.”

While deLoera is looking forward to his new school, he had high praise for the students and his colleagues at CCJH.

“I have really enjoyed my time at CCJH and I know the kids and staff are amazing,” deLoera said. “They all work so hard and are committed to the community, I feel like they do not get enough appreciation for the work they do. That being said, I am excited to start at PTES. I have always felt that the foundations of a quality K-12 education start at the elementary level and I want to be a part of that foundational learning for students.”

PTES’ new principal is an advocate of education. He mentioned his parents immigrated from Mexico and their education did not extend beyond the sixth grade.

“That is why I value education so much and understand how important it is,” said deLoera who is the first person in his family to earn a college degree. “My parents worked hard and showed me what discipline and determination looks like.”

However, it is not all work and no play for deLoera. The administrator said he enjoys hiking and biking, as well as watching movies. He confesses he is an avid baseball fan and if his new office is decorated in the same manner as his old one at CCJH, folks can easily determine which are his favorite teams.

One fun fact is deLoera grew up in California and as a child his neighbor was singer Kenny Loggins. Whether he is living the lyrics of Loggins “I’m alright” or “Celebrate Me Home”, deLoera is ready for his new leadership position in the Apache Junction Unified School District.

Located in beautiful Gold Canyon, AZ, Peralta Trail Elementary students and staff enjoy year-round desert splendor the moment they set foot on campus. The bobcat is the school's mascot and the Bobcat Pledge, GROWL (grow, respect, overcome, work and lead) helps students and staff stay focused on what's important in school and in life.

Enrollment is currently being accepted at all AJUSD schools. For more information visit www.ajusd.org or call 480-982-1110.

Staff Picks Of The Month

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix, recommended by Grace

Warning: If you are afraid of dolls or anything with dead eyes and a painted smile, this book isn’t for you – or maybe it is, you decide your scare tolerance! Grady Hendrix’s How to Sell a Haunted House follows Louise who has recently lost both her parents in a terrible accident. In the wake of the tragedy, she must fly from San Francisco to Charleston – and away from her daughter Poppy - to sell her childhood home with the assistance of her not-so-helpful brother, Mark. Once Louise and Mark reluctantly embark on the journey of selling the home together, they soon realize that they got more than they bargained for. From evil puppets to invisible dogs, it is evident that much more than just shadows lurk within the corners of this desolate home.

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia MorenoGarcia, recommended by Tracie

Velvet Was the Night showcases Mexico City during the political upheaval of the 70’s. Maite is just living and getting by until the next installment of her novella series that lets her dream about and imagine what her life could be.

Leonora, Maite’s next-door neighbor, asks Maite to watch her cat. Leonora, who seemed to be living the life Maite dreams of, does not return; people start asking questions and start showing up at Lenora’s apartment, searching for

something. Maite needs to get paid for watching the cat and is intrigued by Leonora’s lifestyle and what these people want.

Collateral Damage by J.A. Jance, recommended by Trish

Old grudges are hard to bury, especially for an ex-cop and parolee like Frank Muñoz who is now seeking revenge on those who are responsible for sending him to prison. Ali Reynolds and Stu try to figure out who was the real target: her husband or his driver when they are forced off the interstate, both sustaining serious injuries, on the way to attend a conference in London. Stu uses his AI to help determine who is the target: the limo driver, or his employer, B Simpson.

We Were Once a Family: A Story of Love, Death, and Child Removal in America by Roxanna Asgarian, recommended by Megan S.

This carefully researched book is the story of two tragedies: the murder of six children by their adopted parents and the child welfare system that put the children on that path. The stories of the two sibling groups are told with compassion and unflinching honesty, reflecting the humanity of these children and the future that was taken from them. Although it’s about much more than the crash, that crime and its aftermath are also discussed, with as much detail as can be gleaned from social media posts,

interviews, police reports, and court records. This is a heart-wrenching book, but a very necessary one to give full context to this crime and how it affected everyone connected to those who died.

Baby Driver: Music From the Motion Picture, recommended by Tracie

This is a great soundtrack to groove to at work while ordering books. “Harlem Shuffle” from Bob and Earl to “Baby Driver” by Simon and Garfunkel bring back scenes from the movie and that Motown sound with “Nowhere to Run” by Martha and the Vandellas.

From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz, recommended by Dennis

This novel has 3 different storylines: a psychopathic murderer who pushes his loving wife from a platform to her death, a loving mother raising her prodigy child who loses his eyesight, and a girl named Angel, who is raised by her aunt after her mother dies giving birth to her. The stories eventually combine and each storyline is resolved together. How these fascinating characters come into each other’s lives is as interesting as the plot itself. The novel is ultimately a story of good and evil, overcoming hardship, and includes a touch of coexisting realities to make it a Koontz novel. I enjoyed it.

The Color of Roses by Danielle Dall’Armi Hahn, recommended by Megan C.

With April showers come May flowers, so what better for the month of May than pages of petals? The Color of Roses is perfect for rose admirers who don’t want to be overwhelmed by facts. Although the introduction includes helpful information about rose varieties, landscaping, and arranging, most of the book reads like a magazine with delightful pictures. Hahn helps demystify roses and promotes their approachability by listing each rose by color in a “curated spectrum of blooms.” Simply sit back and enjoy this collection of 300 roses. From white to yellow, pink to peach, purple, orange, red, caramel, and even green, this book will help you choose the perfect rose for your garden!

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

PACHYCEREUS SCHOTTII AND COUSINS

When William Shakespeare asked the question, “What’s in a name?” in Romeo and Juliet, he was referring to the idea that names are a convention to distinguish things or people, but themselves do not have any worth or meaning. Nowhere is this truer than in the common and Latin names of plants.

In this article I answer the question “What does the phrase ‘columnar cactus’ mean?” Columnar cacti describes upright growth of cacti such as Saguaros, Senita and others which tend to grow in columns. The name is from the Latin cereus, meaning wax taper, referring to the stiff, upright form of the columnar species. So basically, our upright cacti have the name cereus somewhere in their Latin name such as Pachycereus schottiii.

Type in ‘columnar cactus’ and one of the first to pop up is the totem pole cactus (Pachycereus schottii f. monstrosus). The totem pole is a naturally occurring clone from the Pachycereus schottiii, commonly called the old man cactus. Originating in one small area in Baja, these clones can only reproduce vegetatively, fruits are rare and seedless. The only way they can propagate is by fallen plants rooting, a task which they do very well and has been aided by humans.

Totem pole cacti are very popular, especially in those areas that have high traffic where thorns are not welcome.

HEALING NATURALLY

Hormones keep our bodies healthy and help us feel good, but when we get imbalances of these natural chemicals in our systems it can have a negative impact on our health. These imbalances can come as a result of many factors, including physical or emotional stress, changes in our bodies as we age, environmental influences, and disease.

Let’s take a look at a few common hormone imbalances and how they can affect a person’s health. Of course, each person has an individualized response to these circumstances, but we can speak in broad terms about how too much or too little of a hormone may affect us.

ESTROGEN: Estrogens are sex hormones that are present in both men and women, but in significantly greater quantities in women. Too little estrogen in the system is often associated with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and irritability, but in fact too much estrogen can ALSO produce these symptoms. For this reason, it’s important to get accurate testing of hormones before beginning any treatment and then monitor estrogen levels over time so supplements can be adjusted to keep them within proper ranges.

PROGESTERONE: This hormone has many metabolic functions and can have a mild sedative effect that promotes calmness and relaxation. Think of it as your natural antianxiety agent. A proper ratio of progesterone to estrogen is important to health and well-being. Too much progesterone, on the other hand, can produce lethargy and even mild depression.

TESTOSTERONE: Although testosterone is thought of as a “male” hormone, it is also found in women. It plays an important role in maintaining bone and muscle mass and affects the reproductive system, as well as promoting a sense of psychological well-being. In both men and women testosterone affects libido; however, too much in the system can lead to aggressiveness and anxiety. In women it can also cause facial hair and other unwanted symptoms. (As a side note, the hormone DHEA serves as a precursor to testosterone in women. When a female has a low testosterone level, DHEA supplementation can be given to allow her body to convert the DHEA into the amount of testosterone her body actually needs.)

COULD IT BE A HORMONE IMBALANCE?

CORTISOL: This is often called the “stress hormone.” Produced in the adrenal gland, cortisol helps the body deal with both physical and emotional stresses. Too little cortisol can make it very difficult to deal with even mildly stressful situations; too much can lead to a feeling of being “wired and tired” and chronic insomnia. A proper balance of cortisol is also necessary in the delivery of thyroid hormone to the cells; too much of it can interfere with how much thyroid hormone is being properly absorbed and used. This can lead to something sometimes called “functional hypothyroidism”; a state in which the thyroid gland is producing proper amounts of hormones but the body exhibits symptoms of low thyroid function.

It's also important to note that both doctors and patients often talk about specific hormone problems as though they can be treated individually, but in truth all hormones interact with and affect each other. Because of that interaction we need to be aware of how all the components of the endocrine system are functioning if we’re to successfully balance the hormones and bring the body into a state of homeostasis.

INSPIRATION FOR A BETTER LIFE

At 7:57 am on June 21st the astronomical event called Summer Solstice will occur when one of Earth’s axis, or poles, is at its maximum tilt. The longest day and the shortest night of the year is created as the sun reaches the highest point in the sky. The Summer Solstice is a precise planetary moment, the same moment everywhere on Earth. That exact moment when we are connected to everyone else on planet Earth. It is no wonder that the celebrations around the world focus on the brightness of the light within us, promote new beginnings and inspire ourselves and others to live our best life.

One simple way to inspire ourselves is to practice positive affirmations every day. These are simply encouraging, specific, and realistic statements that will shift your mindset from negativity and self-criticism to positivity and focus on your strengths. Positive affirmations are described by the Psychology Dictionary as brief phrases, repeated frequently, which are designed to encourage positive, happy feelings,

thoughts, and attitudes. They hold no spiritual or religious meaning in the traditional sense and can be used for many purposes.

“A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” — Mahatma Gandhi. Did you know that according to the National Science Foundation, an average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of these, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive. It is important to be mindful and develop a positive mindset. Using affirmations can encourage and motivate you to develop skills, learn new things, and live a healthier life. Repeating an affirmation can help boost your motivation and confidence, but you still must take some action yourself. Try thinking of affirmations as a step toward change, not the change itself.

Medical science also supports the benefits of positive affirmations. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change and adapt in response to new experiences. This means that our brains are constantly rewiring themselves in response to our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. When we repeat positive affirmations, we effectively rewire our brains to focus on the positive. This is because the more we focus on something, the stronger the neural pathway becomes. In other words, by repeating positive affirmations, we are training our brains to think more positively.

Fortunately, positive affirmations are almost as easy to define as they are to practice. Put simply, they are positive phrases or statements used to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts. Practicing positive affirmations can be extremely simple: Always remember to start them with the phrase “I AM.” Write them in the present tense Use positive words Pick a phrase or two and repeat it to yourself every day. Need inspiration? You can follow FaceBook/liveitwellgoldcanyon or Instagram/liveitwellaz for June’s positive “I AM” affirmation posts.

New beginnings are a part of Summer Solstice, but did you know that the United Nations General Assembly chose the summer solstice as the International Day of Yoga? Practicing meditation and yoga is a great way to release old energy, welcome the light, bring healing to the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies, and create inner and outer abundance as a part of your Summer Solstice celebration. Everyone is welcome to drop by The Live it Well Place on Kings Ranch Road for the Free early morning Summer Solstice Celebration which includes meditation and movement at 8:00 am on June 21st.

Make your Summer Solstice a celebration for a new inspired and positive you. Live your Best Life Everyday!

REAL ESTATE FOR YOU

BROKER/OWNER LORI BLANK & ASSOCIATES, LLC

Nearly 70 million American households include at least one pet, but most prospective buyers won’t want to see evidence of pets in a home on the market.

Here are some tips about how to sell a pet-friendly home.

PRIOR TO LISTING

Point out special pet features to your real estate agent — a cat door, feeding station or a pet shower, or even a fenced back yard or a dog run can be a bonus to many buyers. It’s important to remember that buyers want to imagine their pets in the home, not yours! Minimize your pet’s presence by decluttering pet supplies as well as your personal items.

While it is best to downplay non-human residents in a home for sale, some pets are more difficult to camouflage or move out of the way. If you have a bird, an aquarium, or large exotic pets, use your best judgment while keeping the “less is more” philosophy in mind.

If there is any pet damage, it should be repaired before you show the home. If necessary, repaint walls, refinish floors, or replace carpeting. Ask a friend or relative (one without a pet) to give your house a sniff test. If there are any odors, do whatever is necessary to eliminate them. It is not likely enough to try to mask the odors with air fresheners in order to make the best impression on potential buyers.

DEALING WITH SHOWINGS

Always arrange for animals to be out of the house when a showing is scheduled. If you can’t be there to pick up a pet, trust a neighbor to take the dog for a walk or herd the cat into a carrier and keep it for a few hours. A barking dog in the backyard is annoying, and even the cutest puppy can intimidate a buyer. Cats, too, are notoriously independent, and not all humans are cat lovers.

Buyers expect even a house with pets to be kept scrupulously clean. Sweep and vacuum up pet hair as often as necessary. Pick up feeding bowls and toys, and remove cat litter boxes prior to a showing. Polish nose prints off glass and puts away the scratching pole. Think of pets and pet items the same as you would personal photographs and other memorabilia that clutter your home. Removing those items helps the buyer see themselves in your home and can increase the likelihood of a sale.

PET-FRIENDLY HOMES: SOME SELLING DO’S AND DONT’S

It’s also wise to double-check with your insurance company to determine your liability in the event that your pet bites or otherwise injure anyone at your property.

BEFORE AND DURING MOVING

Remember that moving is stressful, not only for you but for your best friend as well. Speak to your veterinarian in advance about possible symptoms of anxiety such as increased accidents, changes in appetite, aggressive behavior, or other personality changes that may occur. If you notice any significant signs of anxiety, seek treatment.

If at all possible, take your pet to see your new home prior to your move. If not, continue to look for signs that your pet is feeling disoriented or anxious. Finding a reliable and trustworthy veterinarian near your new home beforehand is a good idea in case your pet is struggling. Take extra care that your pet doesn’t try to “escape” back to the familiar and get lost.

Selling your home and moving into a new home can be exciting, complicated, and stressful events. The same can be true for your pets. With a little bit of extra planning, things can go a lot smoother for your entire family. Contact your real estate professional for even more tips for a successful home selling, home buying, and relocating experience. More information? Call 480-221-7922

IN THE KITCHEN WITH MARSHA

CHICKEN PICCATA

This dish comes together fast and has a delicious velvety lemon-butter sauce!

INGREDIENTS:

• *1 – 1 ¼ lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, thin-sliced or pounded-thin

• Salt & freshly ground black pepper

• 1/3 c all-purpose flour

• 6 tablespoons butter, divided

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• ½ c minced shallot or onion

• 4 cloves garlic, minced

• **2/3 c dry white wine

• 1 c chicken broth

• 3 tablespoons drained non pareil capers

• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest

• Chopped fresh parsley for serving, optional

INSTRUCTIONS:

Season both sides of the chicken with salt and pepper. Place the flour in a shallow dish, add the chicken and turn to coat both sides. Shake off excess flour. Heat 2 Tbsp of the butter and all of the oil together in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When the butter is bubbling, add the chicken and cook until golden brown on both sides. If necessary, work in batches to prevent overcrowding the pan. Do not have the chicken touching each other.

Transfer the chicken to a plate and set aside. Add the shallot (or onion) to the same pan over medium heat and cook for 3 minutes, until soft. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Add the wine, bring to a simmer, and cook for 30 seconds, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the chicken broth, remaining 4 Tbsp of butter, capers, lemon juice and lemon zest and bring to a simmer. Return the chicken to the pan with any accumulated juices on the plate. Return to a simmer. Cook for 2 to 4 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce thickens slightly. Garnish with parsley.

*Either purchase thin-sliced chicken or halve 2 regular boneless, skinless chicken breasts horizontally to create 4 thinner cutlets or pound your boneless, skinless chicken breasts until they are about ½” thick.

**If you do not want to use wine, you can substitute chicken broth.

Serve the Chicken Piccata with fluffy rice, angel hair pasta, mashed potatoes or couscous. ENJOY!!

Strawberry Lemon Blondies

These strawberry blondies are moist and dense (think soft shortbread) with pockets of diced fresh strawberries in the batter. The hint of lemon revs up the berry flavor and gives these bars a bright, tangy vibe.

INGREDIENTS:

Blondies:

• 1 c unsalted butter, at room temperature

• ¾ c granulated sugar

• 1 large egg

• 1/4c fresh squeezed lemon juice

• 1 Tbsp lemon zest

• 2 ¼ c all-purpose flour

• ½ tsp baking powder

• ½ tsp salt

• 1 c diced fresh strawberries (not too small)

GLAZE:

• 1c sifted powdered sugar (measure 1 cup of powdered sugar, then sift)

• 1 Tbsp strawberry puree (you’ll need about 2 large strawberries, instructions below)

• Lemon Juice – about 1 Tbsp, or just enough to thin the glaze to a spreadable consistency.

• 1 – 2 tsp lemon zest

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Line a 9” square baking pan with parchment paper with long edges. This will help you lift out the blondies for easy glazing and slicing later.

Cream the butter, sugar and lemon zest until fluffy. Beat in the egg. When the egg is fully incorporated, beat in the lemon juice. The lemon juice will probably not completely incorporate at this point, that’s OK. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt and add to the wet ingredients, mixing until no more dry flour is present. Gently fold in the diced strawberries. Spread the mixture into your pan and spread out as evenly as possible. The dough is thick, so take your time.

Bake 30-35 minutes, just until starting to turn golden around the edges and the “center” is set. A toothpick inserted in the center will be a little moist, but not wet. Don’t over-bake these, or they will dry out. Let cool on rack.

GLAZE INSTRUCTIONS:

Trim the strawberries for the glaze and puree in a small food processor or smash strawberries with a fork. Strain the puree through a small strainer to get 1 Tbsp of puree. Whisk together the sugar, puree, lemon juice and lemon zest until no lumps remain. If your glaze is too thin, add a touch more of sugar. If it is too thick, add a little more lemon juice. Spread the glaze over the cooled blondies. Let the glaze set before slicing.

For a variation, try blueberries or raspberries.

AJ ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECEIVES GRAND PIANO DONATION

Desert Vista Elementary School (DVES) now has a grand piano gracing its stage thanks to its donation by Gold Canyon resident Nanci Wilson through the Gold Canyon Arts Council. The piano is in very good condition and was manufactured in 1939 by Wm. Knabe & Co., one of the top five piano companies in America both then and now.

The Knabe brand has an illustrious history as it was the piano of the Metropolitan Opera during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. And before then, on May 5, 1891, the Knabe family brought Peter Tchaikovsky (1840-93) to America in celebration of the opening of Carnegie Hall for which Tchaikovsky conducted. Thereafter, he conducted concerts in other major cities for Knabe.

Nanci acquired the piano when she recently purchased a furnished home within the Superstition Mountain gated community. She decided to donate the piano to a school, church or other nonprofit as she is unable to play the

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER 401(K) LOANS OR WITHDRAWALS?

At some point, you may have more money in your 401(k) than in any other investment. And even though your 401(k) is intended for your retirement, you may one day think you have to tap into your account early — but should you? And if you do, how should you go about it?

If it’s possible to avoid taking money from your 401(k) before you retire, you probably should do so. You could spend 25 or more years in retirement, and you’ll need to pay for those years, so you may want to look for alternatives to your 401(k). If you’ve built an emergency fund containing several months’ worth of living expenses in cash or cash equivalents, you could use some of this money. If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you could use it to pay for qualified medical expenses. Or you could sell some of your taxable investments, rather than going into your taxdeferred 401(k).

But if you have determined that you must look at your 401(k) plan to meet a short-term funding need, you’ll want to carefully consider how to go about it. You typically have two main choices: loans or withdrawals.

For plans that allow loans, employees can generally borrow up to 50% of the vested amount of their 401(k)s, up to a maximum of $50,000 within a 12-month period. Administrative fees may apply, and Interest will be charged, but it will be added back to the 401(k) account as part of the loan repayments. Except when they’re used for a home purchase, loans must be repaid within five years, with equal payments made at least quarterly, unless payments are allowed to be paused temporarily. If you leave the company or don’t repay the loan according to the agreement, the loan balance will likely be treated as a taxable distribution.

Now, let’s consider withdrawals. For 401(k) plans that allow current employees to make withdrawals, the withdrawal requests are usually considered either hardship or non-hardship. To qualify for a hardship withdrawal, you must demonstrate an immediate and heavy financial need to pay for certain expenses, including a home purchase, college, a medical issue or other specified costs, and your withdrawal is limited to the amount necessary to meet the need. Non-hardship withdrawals can typically be taken for any purpose but usually are not granted until you’re 59½ or older.

Unlike with a loan, a hardship withdrawal can’t be repaid, while a non-hardship withdrawal can usually only be repaid by rolling over the amount to an IRA within 60 days. But the bigger issue may be taxes. If you withdraw funds from your 401(k), any previously untaxed money is generally taxed as ordinary income and a 10% penalty will apply if you’re younger than 59½, unless you qualify for an exception. Plus, your 401(k) plan typically must withhold 20% of the withdrawal for taxes, so you’d have to take an even larger withdrawal to meet your needs.

Before embarking on a 401(k) loan or withdrawal, you may want to consult with a financial professional and your tax advisor. Taking money from your 401(k) is a big move, so make sure you know everything that’s involved.

instrument. Her realtor, Karen Jordan, contacted Gold Canyon Arts Council (GCAC) member Ray Cunningham to request his assistance in identifying a deserving nonprofit entity to receive the donation. Ray has facilitated the donation of several guitars and other instruments to local schools. He also serves as Lead Guitar Liaison and Grants Committee Chair for GCAC.

Several potential candidates were contacted, including the Arizona Piano Institute, local churches, and the Apache Junction Unified School District. AJUSD Executive Director Chad Cantrell immediately expressed interest on behalf of the District and ultimately recommended that DVES be the recipient of the piano.

The Knabe grand piano was delivered to DVES on April 19, 2023 and formally acknowledged and accepted by the AJUSD governing board and DVES Principal Heather Preston at its regular meeting on April 25, 2023. All parties are pleased that the piano has found a good home and will be enjoyed by members of our community for the long term.
