The protection of religious freedom is enshrined within the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights; these documents recognize and protect religious liberty as a fundamental right for all who reside in America.
Around the mid-1900s, this freedom of religion treasure established roots in an emerging community called Gold Canyon.
The first church structure in Gold Canyon is believed to be a building that stands next to the Gold Stallion Restaurant. I was told –by Harold Christ – that certain Gold Canyon citizens constructed the building as part of a church plant by the Community Church of Tempe. Regrettably, this particular church plant never materialized. The Gold Canyon Golf Resort now owns the building.
The former Apacheland Church – the socalled “Elvis Chapel” - now sits proudly at the Superstition Mountain – Lost Dutchman Museum. Church services are held in the building either by the “Cowboy Church,” “Buckboard Ministries Church,” or the “Cowgirl for Christ Church.”
In 1987, Rev. Jim Woods of the Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa began conducting services in homes within Gold Canyon. In 1988 services were moved to the Gold Canyon Elementary School. Soon attendance exploded, and the quest for land and a building was initiated, and in 1997, the first worship services began in the nowestablished Gold Canyon United Methodist Church. The Reverend Fred Steinberg pastors the church and has been doing so since 1997.
The Gold Canyon Superstition Foothills Baptist Church began in 1994, with a few
GREETINGS TO ALL ADOBE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
parishioners meeting at the Gold Canyon RV Resort. Quickly growing in numbers, the church moved to the Gold Canyon Plaza Strip Mall. In 1996, the church broke ground for its first building, which was completed in 1997. In 2010, the church erected its second building just north of the original building. The church held its first service in the new building on Good Friday, 2011. Pastor Tim Jennings is the church pastor and has been in that position since 2018.
The Gold Canyon Community Church began in 2000 with just a few worshippers, meeting in the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel. After a short stay at the hotel, the church moved to Thunder Mountain Middle School in Apache Junction. Growth was quick, causing the parishioners to move to the Peralta Trails Elementary School in 2003, where they rented the gym and a few classrooms. Still expanding, in 2010, they began to lease the Gold Canyon Elementary School, and after another significant growth surge, the congregation purchased the school property in 2020. Pastor David Abbatacola has been pastoring the church since 2004.
The Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Mesa initiated an outreach ministry to Gold Canyon in 2003, holding services at the Mt. Brook Village town hall. In 2004 services were relocated to the Best Western Hotel in Gold Canyon. Quick growth then fostered the construction of their current church building in 2010. Pastors Nancy Milleville and Tina Mills are the current pastors.
The Centerstage Church began in Mesa in 2005. From there, growth moved the church to the Mesa Elementary School and then to Apache Junction in 2010. In 2022 the church moved to Gold Canyon, purchasing the first
church building of the Gold Canyon Superstition Foothills Baptist Church. The church also ministers through the Community Zao Theatre, created by the church in 2015. Pastor Michael Bryce has pastored the church since its beginning in 2005.
The newest church in Gold Canyon is the Shepard of the Canyon Lutheran Church. The church began in Gold Canyon in early 2022 with a home bible study, then moved to the Gold Canyon Best Western Hotel in October 2022. In August 2023, the congregation relocated to a worship facility in the Gold Canyon Goldcor Center (6499, KRR, #12). Pastor Dr. Mark Wood is the pastor of this church and has been so since its beginning. ADOBE welcomes this latest church to Gold Canyon.
Unfortunately, I could not get detailed information on the Gold Canyon Church of Christ. Records indicate that it was established in Gold Canyon in 2001 and that three elders are the church leaders.
Gold Canyon is deeply blessed with these multiple churches, and I am sure more are to come as Gold Canyon continues to grow. ADOBE extends its deepest thanks to all Gold Canyon churches who have stood faithful in addressing the spiritual and physical needs of the people in multiple ways –thank you.
There are the untold stories I propose of Native Americans standing on mountain tops, of monks on horseback, and of cowboys sitting at campfires which have worshipped through the centuries in this land in which we now live. Likewise, these worshippers prayed and worshipped each in their own way through their hearts and minds to the God of gods. Look and listen - perhaps you can still hear them, perchance you can still see them. Mayhap, I will see you at church this coming Lord’s Day.

Staff Picks Of The Month
FROM APACHE JUNCTION PUBLIC LIBRARYGood Night, Irene by Luis Alberto Urrea, recommended by Trish
It is the beginning of World War II, and the Red Cross has a new program for women to serve. Irene and Dorothy both have their own reasons for joining but the unlikely pair make a great team, serving coffee, donuts, and good cheer to the troops. It is not all sugar and cream, however, as they face the same nightmares and action the troops do. Both Irene and Dorothy have become close, like sisters, but Irene is concerned about Dorothy. Dorothy secretly joins a group called the Grey Ghosts on secret missions, which become more complex. The story is laced with intrigue, romance, and peril but is a truly moving story of love and endurance.
All the Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby, recommended by Dennis Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. He is an ex-FBI man haunted by his own past. A year after he is elected sheriff, a beloved schoolteacher is killed in his classroom and the murderer is shot by one of Titus’s deputies. Racial tensions ignite because the murderer is black, and the deputy is white. As Titus investigates the shootings, he uncovers terrible crimes and a serial killer who is hiding in plain sight. I was immediately drawn into this story and even though I had an idea who the killer was, I didn’t know his identity. This is a story you can’t put down.
When the World Didn’t End: A Memoir by Guinevere Turner, recommended by Megan S.
Many people who write memoirs rely on faded memories and family lore to recount their childhoods, but Guinevere Turner has something more: multiple diaries kept throughout her life that reveal she grew up as part of a cult. She was raised in the Lyman Family, led – and isolated - by Mel Lyman. The result of those diaries and her adult perspective is a heart-wrenching portrayal of twisted dynamics, mental and physical abuse, and the corruption of power. Turner’s writing is clear and level-headed, and I found this memoir very moving.
The Celebrants by Steven Rowley, recommended by Karen
After the unexpected death of a close friend, five college friends make a pact to throw each other “living funerals” whenever one of them needs extra support and love during a personal hardship. Throughout the years, the friends honored the pact (whether they wanted to or not), but the final call would be the most challenging for them all. A mix of The Big Chill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, the story is filled with laughter and tears, has engaging characters, and is a good reminder to remember to tell those who we love and care about how we feel about them while we can.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, recommended by Leah & Megan C.
Staff members Leah and Megan C. read this book together as a “buddy read.” Check out both of their reviews below:
Leah: I loved this book. The writing was wonderful, the story was engaging, and constantly left me on edge waiting to get back to it. I thought that the characters in this book were excellent. They were real, they made mistakes, they were not always the people you wanted them to be, but in the end they worked. I’m not even sure how to put into words how I felt. It left me feeling emotional, and happy, but also wanting more (in a good way). I would 10/10 recommend this book to anyone!
Megan C: Probably my favorite read of 2023 so far! Complex and captivating, you won’t want this book to end! From the author of The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry comes a modern tale of friendship, ambition, and fame, coupled with tragedy and failure. Two childhood friends voyage into the world of video game design, only to discover their need for creativity, collaboration, and above all connection.
Pineapple Street by Jenny Jackson, recommended by Tracie
Sasha learns the hard way that the rich really are different after she marries Cord and they are offered the family home on Pineapple Street - a home she cannot redecorate or even move furniture in. Sasha tries to fit in with sisters-in-law but finds herself committing faux pas, to the embarrassment of Tilda, her new motherin-law. The bedrooms all must stay the same, causing friction with sister-in-law Georgiana, who works for a non-profit because her trust pays for everything else. Sasha refused the prenup and is dubbed a gold-digger by the sisters. The plot thickens because older sister Darley “marries out” and had refused the prenuptial agreement that would have covered costs when husband Malcolm loses his job. How will Darley continue their luxurious lifestyle? And when will Darley tell her parents and the rest of the family that they may be homeless and broke – if she tells them at all?
Gold Canyon’s Visitor Center has a new home!
Northern Pinal County Visitor Center is now located at 6338 S. Kings Ranch Road inside CenterStage. This volunteer-based service will be opening September 5th at its new location. It is exciting to see the continuum of this marvelous addition to the community of Gold Canyon.
A bit of history: In 1996, Business owners Mike and Sue Schaffer noticed the need for a place where the growing Gold Canyon area could have visitor, tourist and local information on businesses available. They have generously funded, housed, and staffed the Northern Pinal County Visitor Center. Initially, it was located within the lobby of Canyon Rose Storage and most recently at The Live it Well Place. Working with the business community, Pinal County, and ADOT, the Schaffer’s were able to have the monument sign on US 60 being repainted and new signage applied as well as a blue government sign for Visitor Center being posted. After 25+ years of supporting this community gem, they are pleased to announce that Centerstage Church/Zao Theatre, a new Gold Canyon business, volunteered to continue and support the Visitor Center.
GC GARDEN CLUB WELCOMES NEW, & RETURNING MEMBERS
The first gathering of the Gold Canyon Garden Club’s 2023-2024 Season is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, 2023, 10 a.m., at the GCUMC Missions Center, located at 8330 E. Sunrise Sky Drive in Gold Canyon (across the street from the Church’s Main Campus on Kings Ranch Road).
This informal welcome-back luncheon is a great opportunity to meet other gardening enthusiasts, and learn more about the Club’s projects and presentation schedule for our 2nd Tuesday of the Month gatherings from September through May.
You will be amazed at all of the information available in the Visitor Center, making it a one stop shop for tourist and local business information. The new space will provide local business information for winter and full-time residents. They will have over 200 business cards for businesses just in Gold Canyon along with racks and racks of Arizona tourist information.
Volunteers from the community will be on hand starting September 5th. The initial hours are: 10am – 2pm Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 11am – 2pm on Tuesday. Additional hours will be added later based on the availability of volunteers. Watch for updates and announcements.
Stop in and say Thank You to Centerstage Church/Zao Theatre and their volunteers and support our Northern Pinal County Visitor Center, in our community, under the Arizona Sun and in the shadows of Superstition Mountain.
The Gold Canyon Garden Club has been a part of this community since 1998. As a member of the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs, we are a group of gardeners who have organized on a local, state, national, and international level. Eighteen local clubs and two plant societies make up the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. Fifty State Garden Clubs, the National Capital Area Garden Club, and 447 international affiliates make up the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Our members create a powerful voice and expansive network for advancing common interests, not only from our local communities but all over the world. We provide education, resources, and national networking opportunities for our members to promote the love of gardening, floral design, and civic and environmental responsibility. The Gold Canyon Garden Club’s objective is to encourage interest in all phases of home gardening and promote civic beautification and conservation of natural resources.
We welcome you to join us! For more information, please contact us at gcgc@spcdock.com or Like us on Facebook!

TIPS & HINTS ON LANDSCAPING TOMMCDONALD
OWNER - SMILING DOG LANDSCAPES
SUN SCALD ON CACTI
Orient succulents and cacti when planting to their original position.
If it is not possible to know how they were originally orientated, cover them with shade cloth that provides at least fifty percent shade when planting. This should remain till October and may have to be re-installed the following summer. We recommend shading any cactus or succulent that is planted June through August.
Sun scalds are a phenomenon that can affect cacti and other succulent plants, particularly in environments with intense sunlight and high temperatures like the Sonoran Desert.
Cacti have several strategies to protect themselves from damaging solar radiation. Their “skin” is protected by a thick, waxy coating that helps preserve moisture and prevent sun damage. Thorns provide shading and cooling.
Cacti can also “harden” their south side, the side that takes the worst beating from sunlight. They do this over several years as they acclimate to their location. Therefore, nurseries mark the south side of their cactus and succulents and encourage you to plant them with that same orientation.
Sun scald on most plants looks similar. The agave pictured is just starting to burn. The skin or bark starts to take on a lighter pigment, going from green to yellow to brown. You do not want to get to brown as by that point the plant is most likely too damaged to grow out of it. The barrel cactus pictured bypassed ‘brown’ and went straight to death.
Preventing sun scald on plants is simple: Pick the right plant to suit your space! Utilize existing afternoon shade wherever possible.
Plants that have been in the ground for years with no apparent issue can still sunburn. Something may have changed in the landscape causing more exposer to the sun than before or maybe climate change is happening quicker than a particular species ability to respond.
Watering during intense heat is a challenge and more is not necessarily the answer. Many cacti and succulents ‘shut’ down when nighttime temperatures stay above ninety degrees Fahrenheit and do not need more water during these high heat episodes.
This summer numerous new heat related records were set. It is not lost on me that many of the records broken were set in recent years.
If this trend continues, our plants may not be the only life forms that will need a little help in surviving these scorching summers.
HEALING NATURALLY
Dr. Tina Marcantel, Naturopathic DoctorHow is it possible to have normal thyroid test results when you have all the symptoms of low thyroid function?
“Functional hypothyroidism” refers to a condition when the thyroid is producing a NORMAL amount of thyroid hormone but other hormone imbalances effectively STOP the thyroid molecules from functioning properly in the body. This condition is fairly common and often overlooked.
WHEN IT’S A THYROID PROBLEM —BUT REALLY NOT…
What Causes Functional Hypothyroidism?
Detection and Treatment
Septembe r 2023
Many people recognize the signs of low thyroid (hypothyroidism) such as foggy brain, dry skin and hair, hair loss, fatigue, depression, weight gain, constipation, and hypersensitivity to cold. However, blood test results might show that everything appears normal. At this point, you might tend to look for other causes for the symptoms. But let’s explore this a little further.
If there are plenty of thyroid molecules in the bloodstream but they aren’t able to convert into the active form of thyroid in the cells to do their job, then the body reacts as though the thyroid isn’t producing those hormones.
So what’s happening here?
An overproduction or an imbalance of certain other hormones in the body can interfere with how the thyroid hormones are working. For example, if a person is under a lot of stress, either physically or emotionally, the adrenal glands are probably releasing a lot of cortisol. This extra cortisol in the system can actually stop the conversion of thyroid hormones in the cells and keep them from working properly.
This can also be true in the case of estrogen dominance—a condition in which the estrogen hormone levels are too high in relation to the amount of progesterone in the system. The excess estrogen can interfere with the conversion and action of the thyroid hormone.
In this state of functional hypothyroidism, the body is exhibiting the symptoms of low thyroid even though the thyroid gland may be perfectly healthy.
The first step to restoring health is to determine which, if any, hormones are out of balance. A combination of both blood and saliva lab tests and a careful examination of the symptoms by a knowledgeable medical professional can zero in on these imbalances.
The next step is to establish a protocol designed to bring those hormones into a healthy balance. That may mean finding and treating the root cause of the overproduction of stress hormones like cortisol. In the example of estrogen dominance, it may be as simple as supporting the liver to help metabolize too much estrogen or using certain hormone supplements to bring things into balance.

|Directed by
Michael E. Bryce, Sr.Charles Schulz’s beloved comic comes to life in Clark Gesner’s classic musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. The whole gang is here: bossy Lucy is hopelessly in love with piano prodigy Schroeder who doesn’t give her the time of day, perfectionist Sally is still mocking blanket-toting Linus, Snoopy is in the doghouse, and “blockhead,” himself, Charlie Brown, is in rare form. Brief vignettes span the months from Valentine’s Day to Beethoven Day, from wild optimism to utter despair. In this revised version, with additional music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and dialogue by Michael Mayer, the sweet, joyful innocence of the Peanuts gang is maintained, but a fresh insouciance and playfulness is revealed. The new script features two new songs, particularly funny dialogue, and new, catchy orchestrations. Whether you’re keen to fly with the Red Baron, moon over the Moonlight Sonata, or just do your best to find “Happiness,” You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a crowd-pleasing classic.
Irving Berlin’s White Christmas – November 17 - December 16, 2023
Directed by Michael E. Bryce, Sr.
Based Upon the Paramount Pictures film written For the screen by Norman Krasna, Norman Panama and Melvin Frank, this heartwarming musical adaptation features 17 Irving Berlin songs and a book by David Ives and Paul Blake. Having left the Army following W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-anddance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to
find their former commander, General Waverly, as the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General. With a dazzling score featuring wellknown standards including “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial title song, White Christmas is an uplifting, wholesome musical that will delight audiences of all ages.
The Music Man – March 1-23, 2024 | Directed by Michael E. Bryce, Sr.
One of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time! When lovable, smooth-talking Harold Hill comes marching into town, you know there’s going to be trouble in River City. He promises to teach the town’s children how to play in a magnificent marching band as part of a big con but falling in love with Marian the Librarian wasn’t part of the deal. When Marian tries to expose him as a swindler, Hill sets out to win her heart and save his hide. Will the town get wise to Hill or will Marian make an honest man out of him? This wonderful slice of Americana will leave your entire family humming such all-time favorites as “Ya Got Trouble,” “Shipoopi,” “Goodnight Ladies,” “Gary, Indiana,” “Til There Was You,” and the showstopping “Seventy-Six Trombones.” Winner of 5 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Book, music and lyrics by Meredith Willson; story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey.
FRIENDSHIPS MAKE LIFE BETTER
Wellness = A Good Life
The connection of mind-body-spirit for a good life centers on the concept that we are all more than just our thoughts. Our bodies, emotions, and our spirituality combine to give us identity, help determine our health and make us who we are.
Chances are, if you look at your own belief system, you will find bits and pieces of the mind-body-spirit connection already in place. All parts of our being are in constant communication with each other. Whenever one part perceives something it is instantly communicated to the entire being, prompting a response throughout the body.
For example, when we experience fear, it doesn’t just affect our mind. Although our thoughts may be panicked, our mind is racing, and our emotions are fluctuating wildly, we are also experiencing rapid breathing, sweating, a clenching in the stomach and may be praying for help. Every aspect of our being is affected by perceived fear. Likewise, our entire being responds to pain, cravings, trauma, depression, stress, illness, joy, excitement or virtually any emotion, situation, or other stimulus.
Because of this inter-connectedness, the most successful approach to health and wellness addresses psychological, physiological, and spiritual aspects. Wellness is a choice of lifestyle marked by a balanced mind, body, and spirit. When someone is in a state of pure wellness, all elements of the self are in harmonious balance.
MIND - Mental wellbeing is the ability to gather, process, recall and communicate information. Your mental health is dependent on your choice of thoughts and belief systems. It is important to check in with yourself each day to ensure you are choosing positive thoughts to create a positive mind.
BODY - Physical wellbeing is the optimal condition of each of the body’s physiological systems. This includes: Pulmonary, Cardiovascular, Nervous, Immune, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal, and Digestive to name a few. Bodily health is also made possible by a healthy diet, good nutrition, and regular exercise.
SPIRIT - Spiritual wellness involves your relationship to other living things and the role of a spiritual direction in your life. Spiritual wellness means you are working to achieve your potential and to find harmony in living through your relationship with yourself and others. Your values and your purpose in life create spiritual wellbeing.
When you’re physically healthy, you have more energy and stamina to do the things you love. When you’re mentally healthy, you’re able to focus and be productive. And when you’re spiritually healthy, you feel connected to something larger than yourself and have a sense of purpose.
When it comes to living a good life through wellness, it is an ongoing journey. You must focus on enjoying the process and dance to the beat of your own drum to move forward each day with a state of wellbeing. Optimum health is most attainable when your mind, body, and spirit are in alignment.
This balance is more readily achieved through a holistic approach, which is healing that addresses the whole person.
There are many approaches and activities that lend themselves to creating mind, body and spirit harmony. Here are a few:
Mindfulness
Deep breathing techniques
Positive thinking techniques
Yoga
Massage Therapy
Reflexology
Acupuncture
Stretching
Exercise
Meditation
Nutritional Therapy

As the housing market continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly crucial for aspiring homeowners to tread carefully and avoid falling into the trap of being house poor. The dream of owning a home should not come at the expense of financial stability and overall well-being. Here are some essential tips to steer clear of this precarious situation:
SETTING A SENSIBLE BUDGET:
Before even considering purchasing a house, it’s imperative to create a comprehensive budget that includes all your income, expenses, and financial goals. Be honest with yourself about what you can afford, considering not only the mortgage but also property taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance.
PRIORITIZING EMERGENCY SAVINGS:
Building a robust emergency fund should be a top priority. Life is unpredictable, and unexpected expenses can arise at any moment. Having a safety net of three to six months’ worth of living expenses can prevent you from becoming overwhelmed by financial burdens if an unforeseen situation occurs.
SAVING FOR A SUBSTANTIAL DOWN PAYMENT:
While it may be tempting to put down a smaller down payment to secure a house quickly, it’s wiser to save for a more substantial down payment. A larger down payment means borrowing less money and having lower mortgage payments, which can significantly reduce the risk of being house poor.
CONSIDER ALL COSTS:
Beyond the mortgage, homeownership involves additional expenses such as property taxes, insurance, utilities, and maintenance.
AVOIDING BECOMING HOUSE POOR: A PATH TO FINANCIAL SECURITY AND BALANCE
Renters must consider renter’s insurance, utilities, and other costs.
MAINTAINING A HEALTHY DEBTTO-INCOME RATIO:
Lenders often look at your debt-toincome ratio when considering your eligibility for a mortgage. Aim to keep this ratio as low as possible by paying off existing debts before taking on a mortgage.
LIVING BELOW YOUR MEANS:
It’s crucial to resist the temptation of purchasing the most expensive house you can qualify for. Instead, opt for a more affordable home that aligns with your budget and long-term financial objectives.
ANTICIPATE FUTURE EXPENSES:
Plan for the future and anticipate upcoming financial commitments such as career changes, education costs, and family planning. Being prepared for these events will ensure that your housing costs remain manageable even as your life circumstances change.
SHOP AROUND FOR MORTGAGES OR RENT:
If you’re in the market for a new home, don’t settle for the first mortgage offer you receive. Shop around and compare rates and terms from different lenders to secure the most favorable deal.
AVOID MAKING BIG FINANCIAL DECISIONS:
Focus on stabilizing your housing situation first before taking on additional financial responsibilities.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE:
If you’re uncertain about the process or worried about becoming house poor, consider seeking advice from a financial advisor or a reputable real estate professional..
Achieving the goal of homeownership or finding a suitable rental property should not come at the cost of your financial security and overall happiness. Remember, it’s not just about the house you live in; it’s about building a fulfilling life within your means.
IN THE KITCHEN WITH MARSHA
MARSHADORRISNO BAKE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BARS
NO BAKE CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER BARS
oriental BEEF & CAULIFLOWER
These no-bake oatmeal bars are quick and easy to make!
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 cup butter
• ½ cup brown sugar, packed
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 3 cups rolled oats
• 1 cup semisweet or dark chocolate chips
• ½ cup peanut butter
INSTRUCTIONS:
Line an 8” or 9” square baking dish with parchment paper and set aside. Overhang the edges of the paper to lift the bars easier from the dish. Melt the butter and brown sugar in large saucepan over medium heat, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. Stir in vanilla. Mix in oats. Cook over low heat 4 to 5 minutes, or until ingredients are well blended.
Pour half of the oat mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread out the mixture evenly, pressing down. Reserve the other half for second layer. To make the filling, melt the peanut butter and chocolate chips together in a small microwave-safe bowl and stir until smooth. Pour chocolate mixture over the crust, reserving a small amount for drizzling, and spread evenly. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the chocolate layer, pressing in gently and drizzle with the remaining chocolate mixture.
Refrigerate 2 to 3 hours. Bring to room temperature before cutting into bars.
NOTE: Like any no-bake cookie, the final texture of these really depends on how long you boil the sugar mixture. If it doesn’t boil long enough, the bar mixture will be too soft. If you boil too long, they could return out dry and crumbly.
Recipe compliments of the Sugar Apron.
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 ½ lbs lean round steak, cut into 1-inch cubes
• 3 c low-sodium beef stock
• 1 small head of cauliflower, separated into florets
• 1 ¼ c Mixture of Red, Yellow & Orange bell peppers cut into chunks
• 1 small yellow onion cut into chunks
• 2 cloves of garlic, minced
• 2 tsp grated fresh gingerroot
• 1/2c light soy sauce
• 3 Tbsp cornstarch
• 1 tsp sugar
• ¼ c water
• 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
• 3 Tbsp sliced green onions
• Hot cooked Rice
In a skillet, heat oil over medium-high. Brown meat on all sides. Add beef stock; cover and simmer until beef is tender, about 1 hour. Add cauliflower, colored peppers, onions, soy sauce, garlic, gingerroot and red pepper flakes (optional). Add more beef stock if needed. Cover and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 6-8 minutes. Combine cornstarch, sugar and water. Stir into meat mixture. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly; cook 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve over rice; sprinkle top with 3 Tbsp of green onions.

REMEMBER… HONOR…TEACH
By Nancy FassbenderThe above words are the motto for Wreaths Across America. How true these words are to honor our Veterans!
We need your help. For the 3rd year, I am the location coordinator for the Mountain View Cemetery. The last two years we have successfully honored all the Veterans who have been interred in that cemetery as well as assist in other cemeteries.
This year, on December 16, 2023, (Saturday), we will be holding a ceremony at 9:30am and 10am start laying the wreaths to honor the individual Veterans graves. (See flyer). But we are having trouble finding sponsors. For $17 a wreath, you will be able to honor one veteran’s grave. Wreaths Across America also will give $5 back to our own community for us to assist in helping Veterans.
So far, we have had many individuals donate towards purchasing wreaths as well as corporate sponsors such as Albertson/Safeway, America First Credit Union, Crescent Crown, and Purple Heart Chapter 2960. But we need more help. We have 1300 more wreaths to go!
We also have coordinated with The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 2560, VFW and VFW Auxiliary Post 7968 and 9399, and Daughters of the American Revolution. If other organizations would like to join in and help, please let me know!
If you are interested in purchasing a wreaths, as well as volunteering to place the wreaths, please either go to www. wreathsacrossamerica.org/az0190p and do it online, or send your check to Wreaths Across America, 4657 S. Desert Dawn Dr. Gold Canyon, AZ 85118. (See attached flyer) If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 520-280-4715.
Thank you for your help in honoring our Veterans!
FINANCIAL FOCUS MATTRUPPERT
It’s probably not on your calendar, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And that means it’s a good time to become more aware of the benefits of having life insurance — and the dangers of not having it.
Unfortunately, confusion about some of the basic elements of owning life insurance may be keeping people from getting the protection they need. More than half of uninsured Americans say they have put off purchasing coverage because they don’t know what to buy or how much they need, according to Life Happens and LIMRA, two nonprofit organizations that provide research and education about life insurance.
Yet, while this confusion may be understandable, a delay in acquiring appropriate insurance can be costly in more ways than one. From a strict dollars-and-cents perspective, it’s generally much more affordable to buy life insurance when you’re younger. But there are potentially much greater costs involved in not having insurance when it's needed — and these costs are personal.
WHAT DOES IT COST NOT TO HAVE LIFE INSURANCE?
To be specific, what is it worth …
… to know your family could stay in your home if something happened to you?
… to know your children could continue their education plans?
… to know your debts could be paid without burdening your family?
Clearly, if you were to assign these benefits a “price tag,” it would be pretty high.
And that’s the value of owning sufficient life insurance.
So, let’s return to the issue of people putting off buying insurance because they don’t know how much they need, or what type they should have:
How much is enough? You might hear that you need life insurance equal to about seven to 10 times your pretax annual salary. That’s not a bad “ballpark” figure, but not everyone is playing in the same ballpark. To get a true sense of how much of a death benefit you require from your life insurance, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, possibly including your current income, spouse’s income, the size of your mortgage (in addition to other liabilities), number of children, educational expenses and final expenses for funeral arrangements.

What type? You can essentially choose between two basic types of life insurance: term and permanent. As its name suggests, term insurance is designed to provide coverage for a designated period, such as 10 or 20 years. Generally speaking, term insurance is quite affordable for most people, especially when they buy policies as young adults. On the other hand, permanent insurance, such as whole life or universal life, is usually considerably more expensive than term insurance. This is because permanent insurance premiums, in addition to providing a death benefit, help build cash value, which you can typically access through loans or withdrawals, giving you additional flexibility should your financial needs change over time. In choosing between term and permanent insurance, you’ll want to evaluate several issues, such as how long you think you’ll need coverage and how much you can afford to pay in premiums.
Finding out about the benefits, costs and types of life insurance can help you make informed choices to help protect your family for years to come — so don’t delay learning what you need to know.
