Building Design & Technology Certificate General information The official name of the certificate program is Certificate Building Design & Technology (Graduate School). The program is given in English. The group aimed at are the Master students of the Department of the Built Environment. Students can sign up for the certificate program by means of a registration form available at the Education Office on the 2nd floor of Vertigo. Students must also sign up for separate courses by using OSIRIS. The program is held under the responsibility of the Department of the Built Environment. The certificate program has an extent of 15 ECTS, 5 ECTS will be additional to the regular master program of 120 ECTS. So, this certificate is supplementary to the regular master program. Content The certificate Building Technology facilitates a program that enables the Built Environment students from all disciplines of our master tracks (Architecture, Structural Design and Building Physics and Service) to obtain knowledge, insights and skills related to state of the art theories about advanced technological innovations and methods to create future friendly and healthy buildings. This certificate differs in its interdisciplinary nature and technical depth. It helps students to better understand the nature of building technology and its importance in a(n architectural) design process. Next to research and design skills, this certificate program emphasizes the importance of an integrated approach for engineering and making of these innovative building products and concepts. The certificate consists of two courses (assignments) and a project. The courses ‘Building methodology and technology’ (5 ECTS, Q3) and ‘Building technology with extreme complexity’ (5 ECTS, Q4) provide knowledge and skills which can be applied in the master project Building Technology. After completion of this certificate students will be able to confine a building problem and translate it into a promising design method or building product. The student obtains extra knowledge and skills concerning design in the field of Building Technology, sustainability and product development. This certificate focuses on obtaining knowledge and design and research skills related to state of the art production methods, technologies and processes, future fit building and building for other cultures and climates. The essence of the program is constituted by anticipating at and integration of building technological and sustainable aspects of the design. Content Nowadays technology plays a grant role in the design, the construction and the functioning of our buildings. This course aims at expanding the intellectual horizon of students regarding building methods and technological possibilities by providing a toolkit for the analysis of building design projects. To achieve the objectives of this course the theoretical approaches and principles, outlined in the weekly lectures, are reinforced by the knowledge of the latest technologies applied in the field of building engineering. (Guest) Lecturers will provide not only an overview of the recognized building principles and methods such as Open Building and Cradle to Cradle, but will also profoundly discuss the state-of-the-art of technologies in architectural design such as 3D printing, domotica, and robotics. The students will perform a research that combines the obtained knowledge on various methods and technologies in a fully developed academic paper. After successfully completion of this course the student: • will develop a knowledge and understanding of the different recognized principles and methods such as Open Building, bio-based methods, Cradle to Cradle, design for disassembly, methodology of component development, conceptual building, and Slim Bouwen • gains insight into a wide spectrum of modern technologies behind various building concepts and components • will acquire the skill to design and perform a research that combines the obtained knowledge on various methods and technologies in a fully developed academic paper.

Content This course is designed to provide students with knowledge on a number of design issues regarding large and complex buildings. Several complex buildings will be discussed in the weekly (guest) lectures from different points of view such as site, form, structure, skin, building services, space plan and materialization. The complexity of design processes, diversity of aims and disciplines and necessity of an integral approach will be discussed. The students will –in teams– analyze a large building regarding all these aspects. After successfully completion of this course the student: • can trace back key concepts behind the design of a complex building, based upon the gathered information (drawings, pictures, site visits, interviews) • will gain insights into the complexity of a large building on different interrelated layers: site, form, structure, facade, building services, space plan, materialization and finishing • will be introduced to different types of problems (concerning both the design process and the materiality of architecture) and strategies of how to address these challenges within the contingent and interdisciplinary design development

Content In this project the knowledge and skills developed through the two courses “Building Methodology and Technology” and “Building Technology with Extreme Complexity” will help students to better understand the nature of building technology and to realize innovative and qualitative architectural concepts and products. During 8 weeks students will carry out a research aiming at designing an innovative building or developing a building product, in order to improve cases in the fields of health & well-being, ecological sustainability or building for developing countries. Some examples of these cases are radical customization and innovation driven by either market pull (e.g. ageing, urban farming, real estate dynamics, bio-based) or technology push (e.g. domotica, factory 2.0, 3D printing). This project will help students better understand the nature of building technology and its importance in an architectural design process.
