cavator models include nu merous improvements and are characterised in par ticular by their optimised performance data, high level of comfort, new as sistance systems and lower fuel consumption.

Lower fuel consumption and thus fewer emissions

The new crawler exca vators were developed at Liebherr’s long-standing site in Colmar (France) with the aim of significant ly reducing overall energy consumption. The new, patented Liebherr Power Efficiency (PE) - Engine Control system in particu

lar contributed to this.

In concrete terms, the new “PE” function is rep resented by a work mode that complements the ex isting modes of the crawler excavator (P+/P/E). This significant innovation al lows a 10-15% reduction in fuel consumption com pared to previous models.

Machine automation: Liebherr’s Bucket Fill Assist system

The new excavator model range is available with the Bucket Fill Assist

function. This assistance system has an “anti-stall ing” mode that prevents the bucket jamming when penetrating digging mate rial. In this way, this option provides the operator with additional support when using the machine and ensures higher productiv ity and more comfort. The

assist function also enables semi-automatic bucket fill ing, providing an automat ed and faster cycle through easier bucket filling, higher bucket filling level and bet ter penetration into the dig ging material. In addition to reducing fuel consump tion by 10 %, the Liebherr Bucket Fill Assist system also reduces vibrations that would otherwise occur during operation, improv ing operator comfort. The resulting reduced wear on the bucket also helps to re duce operating costs.

New operating modes for individual work needs

All Liebherr hydrau lic crawler excavators in the G5.2 and G6.2 model series are equipped with the Modetronic function,

which proved its worth in Generation 8. This further development allows the operator to adapt the hy draulic characteristics of

their excavator to the re spective application and to their individual habits.

The Modetronic control system thus offers even more comfort and produc tivity by assisting the ma chine operator when driv ing as well as during rotary motion and facilitating con

trol of the boom, stick and bucket. In addition, the Modetronic function en ables a more dynamic be haviour of the machine in “Dynamic” mode and in creased machine stability in “Efficient” mode. The “Custom” mode supple ments the working modes with the facility to perform precision work with greater ease. In “Fine” mode, the machine operator can use the display to make indi vidual adjustments to the machine movements to suit their own preferences.

For even more demanding work: Higher performance and more comfort

The new G5.2 and G6.2 generation excavators presented at Bauma 2022 incorporate the further de velopments in the cab area known from the excavator generation 8. The main screen grows from seven to nine inches and the new hand and foot control units ensure more precise ma chine movements.

To ensure that all hy draulic crawler excavators meet customers’ needs in the best possible way, improvements have been

made to each model that are both innovative and performance-enhancing. A continuous chain guide is available as an option on all new excavator models in the range. In addition, the machines benefit from increased engine power. The R 998 SME with an operating weight of more than 100 tonnes gets a new chassis with larger dimen

sions with a track of 3900 mm and a wheelbase of 5000 mm. The model thus gains stability and as a re sult is ideally suited for de manding working environ ments, such as quarrying and mining.

At the Liebherr stand, the R 992 model will be presented with a 7.20 m gooseneck boom and a 2.90 m stick. The R 992,

which replaces the R 976, guarantees 5% more en gine power. The crawler excavator, which weighs more than 94 tonnes, is powered by a powerful die sel engine with 420 kW / 544 hp. It is equipped with an LC-V chassis, a counter weight of 16 tonnes and a 600 mm track pad. b

Better Reliability With New Electrical Connector From Rototilt

A precondition for exca vator operators being able to exploit all the benefits of the system is that the tech nology has a stable electri cal contact with the control and excavation systems.

“As excavators become more advanced, we also need electrical connec tors that can handle the increased data load with out disruptions to opera tions,” explains Pär Olofs son, Group Manager within Product Development.

The new electrical con nector has a watertight, protected design, with more poles and larger con tact surfaces. Each connec tion pole can also handle a greater load than the previ ous model.

“The service life of the new electrical connector is being significantly in creased, and the risk of disruptions to operations during the working day is minimised thanks to larger contact surfaces and protective rubber bellows that prevent dirt and wa ter from penetrating. The

design also means that the poles are cleaned of dirt and any corrosion during the connection sequence,” says Olofsson.

According to Rototilt, the electrical connector will entail future-proofing with full backward compatibil ity. In the design process, they have taken into ac count the fact that there are going to be more systems and that they will become

more technologically ad vanced. The systems that currently employ a fully hydraulic machine coupler or tiltrotator from Rototilt will have the potential to upgrade to the new elec trical connector after its launch. b

Takeuchi has added the new generation TB335R short tail swing compact excavator to its TB300 Se ries. This excavator fea tures a sophisticated inte rior and exterior design as well as enhanced functions that provide greater perfor mance and peace of mind.

“The TB335R’s short tail swing design results in a rear overhang of only 3.1” over the tracks, making it ideal for working in tight or confined spaces,” said Da vid Caldwell, national prod uct manager for Takeuchi. “It also provides outstand

machine alert is triggered, the telematics system will simultaneously send two messages via email — one to the owner and one to the dealer — and push notifi cations.

The message sent to the Doosan construction equip ment owner lets the owner know that the dealer has been notified. The message will also include any imme diate action that needs to be taken to prevent machine damage, such as shutting down the machine until the issue can be corrected. The Doosan dealer message will include the customer con tact information, the trig gered fault code and a trou bleshooting guide.

Doosan will send Smart X-Care subscribers a ma chine utilization report. This report will use Doo sanCONNECT Telematics data to provide customers with key operation fig ures, which could include machine utilization and fuel consumption. The report will make recom mendations for improving fuel efficiency and reduc ing machine wear. It will also summarize upcoming maintenance needs.

Smart X-Care is cur rently only available for

newly purchased Doosan construction equipment. After the purchase of a new machine, all custom ers will receive a free sixmonth subscription to Smart X-Care. Thirty days before the free period is set to expire, the customer will get a notification alert ing them of the upcoming expiration. The customer can visit the Smart X-Care

subscription page, provide payment information and extend the telematics ser vice. Doosan customers will pay a $19.99 monthly fee per machine for the subscription service.

The Harbour Air ePlane team is excited to announce that the first direct all-electric point to point test flight has been completed. The historic De Havil land Beaver has been completely retrofitted in 2019 to operate using 100% electricity flew 45 miles in 24 minutes. The aircraft left their terminal on the Fraser River adjacent to YVR and landed in Pat Bay adjacent to YYJ. This is a major milestone in the advancement of all-elec tric commercial flights. Take-off was at 0812 with ample reserve power upon landing at 0836.

When the use of chainsaws in the hands of a skilled arborist can’t do the job of maintain ing roadways and pow erline right-of-ways, today, urban foresters are now turning to tree care handlers from SEN NEBOGEN. The 728 M is the latest member of the growing family of tree care handlers that can safely and efficiently grab, cut and carefully place trees and shrubs and were on display at Bauma last month.

Although recently launched a few months ago, the 728 M, a 76,000 lbs. (34,000 kg) machine has already proven itself to arborists.

The 728 M (rubber tired) and 728 R-HD (tracked) is the perfect addition to the SENNE BOGEN tree care han dler line-up. It fills in between the 718 and the 738 which has already become very popular in the US.

With a reach up to 65 feet (19.8 m) which is

only 10 feet (3 m) less than the 738 but 22 feet (6.7 m) more than the 718, it covers a lot of ground. This translates into a machine that can still reach trees that are quite far away which is especially crucial in chal lenging environments like clearing slopes while being able to stay safely on the ground.

My fellow loggers were an interesting bunch. Lurch was the name of the spar operator — he was re lated to the McClarty’s of wrestling fame at the PNE Forum. The other guys were Phil, the hook-tender (boss); Pookie, the rigging slinger; me (the choker man), Chris, who operated the TL15; Chuck drove #9, and Doug was the dump man. The settings were on the northwest side of So nora Island and we could look right into Chameleon Harbour. Often there were sailboats in this harbour that had to wait until high tide to get out.

Bill and his wife had one of the houses at camp. Mabel the cook and Fred the bullcook stayed in the back of the cookhouse, and the rest of us were in the bunkhouse. In the wash

house the next morning, Phil was trying to rinse out his thermos, the water was spraying out sideways from the tap, and finally a “slug” popped out and landed in the sink. The water system was just a 2 inch plastic pipe shoved into the creek, we got Bill to put a screen on it after that.

Since it rained just about every day in June that year, we had to put our boots and rain gear on in the bunkhouse.

After supper we would

usually play poker for quar ters. Pookie was not that good at cards and asked to borrow my trout rod with 8 lb. test, down to the wharf where he caught a 22 lb. salmon. The whole camp got salmon steaks, and even salmon sandwiches!

One night, Pookie and I went and picked huckle berries. We took a 2 gal lon bucket and a blanket. The huge bushes were as big as one’s wrist, we just bent the bush over and shook it on the blanket. We grabbed the blanket on the 4 corners, lifted it and poured the berries into the bucket. Didn’t take too long to fill the bucket as the berries were as big as marbles. Mabel even made us a few pies.

Chris had his speed boat in camp. After supper, we would cruise around the area checking out the old camps, one was on West

Thurlow Island which still had some old equip ment scattered about. An other time, we went to the south of Sonora Island. We walked about half a mile up an old skid road to a small lake just loaded with trout. We didn’t stay too long here as the mos quitoes were so thick you could hardly see.

One night, Mabel packed us a picnic supper and we went up to Philips Arm, where Lurch caught a 17 in. cutthroat trout. After that, we visited Eric Fletch er who homesteaded there. He told us about how they logged up in Philips Lake.

They would drag a line up to the trees on the side hill, and just pull them over into the lake, then buck the roots off and then down the river to the booming grounds. One fall after a lot of heavy rain, the dam of roots and branches gave way flooding the river just as the steelhead run was coming up river.

Pookie and I would walk out to the point where the seiners were tying their nets to the shore, fishing for salmon. I knew one of these guys from school, we had a great chat. b

The BreakerBOSS 5D is configured with a standard Deutz, 177 hp (132 kW), Tier 3 engine. It is also equipped with a 5,000 footpound (6,800 J) BTI BXR50 hydraulic rock breaker attachment. The J4 builds on the ro bust features of the existing design, while adding new productivity with an excit ing line-up of features and options aimed at boosting productivity and offering

enhanced durability across applications.

Designed to withstand the toughest conditions worldwide, the J4 deliv ers high production due to its innovative jaw chamber design and enhanced mate rial flow. The large 1060mm x 700mm (42” x 28”) jaw opening accommodates large feed sizes, contributing

to higher production in ma terial processing.

The material path is en hanced with the 1064mm x 4247mm (41.9” x 167.2”) grizzly pan feeder under the hopper that allows for better sizing of material with a variety of mesh op tions. Options of either a short pan feeder to suit the pre-screen or a double deck

grizzly pre-screen are avail able, ensuring suitability and better sizing of mate rial based on the required end product.

The J4 leads its class in size and number of decks offering a choice of either a two deck or one and a half deck system. The two deck delivers an extra product spec over the mid-size product conveyor. The J4 is the only jaw crusher that offers oversize recircula tion for a higher end prod uct specification.

The J4 also delivers in dustry-leading stockpiling, with wide main and side conveyors for enhanced material flow. Tough Flex is constructed with a special weave of 2 fabric plies and an additional binder warp (without the need for steel wire) result ing in reduced belt weight. it’s lifespan, ToughFlex belts can be easily recycled unlike belts reinforced with a metal ply.

While a side conveyor remains an option for many jaw crushers in its class, the J4’s integral folding con veyor is standard and has an 650mm (26”) adjustable sped belt fueling a stockpile height of 3.44m (11’ x 3.6”).

In addition, the recircula tion conveyor can be rotated 90 degrees to be used as a stockpiling conveyor.

As with all McClos key equipment, safety is paramount, and the J4 is equipped with a number of features to ensure the workplace and the op erator are secure. Engine safety shutdown systems, start-up alarms, full safety guarding, external mainte nance access and a tagout capability on the isolator all contribute to the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment. Ground level access also promotes safety, and allows for quick service and maintenance, reducing the downtime for the operation.

McCloskey engineers have designed the J4 to meet the evolving require ments of today’s projects and operations. Despite the

position of the J4 as a pow erhouse, portability has not been compromised. A Focus On Safety

No second re mote is needed – all controls have been integrated into the DataLogger tablet, al lowing a single operator to control all parts of the pipe loading and fusion process. Rather than being tethered

to the machine, operators can instead position them selves where they have good visibility and can safely ma nipulate the machine.

No wireless signals al lowed? No problem. The Tritan lets operators con nect the DataLogger via a tether when necessary, allowing for operation in environments where wire less signals are restricted or unavailable.

The Tritan 560 offers a bottom-loading carriage that eliminates the need to lift pipe overhead and into the machine for standard fusions. Operators can load pipe quickly and safely in a variety of configurations. The boom arms can raise, extend, and curl the car riage over a range of mo tion. This gives operators the ability to precisely ad just the carriage without having to move the vehicle itself.

In addition, the Tritan offers a removable car riage that can operate in a 2+2 or 3+1 configura

tion, in both a top-loading or bottom-loading setup for maximum flexibility in the field. In confined spaces or in-ditch applications, the carriage can be load ed directly onto the pipe from above, minimizing the amount of excavation required under the pipe. Position, load, and fuse pipe from 12-inch (305mm) to 22-inch (560mm) with ease. The Tritan 560’s

full 360-degree swing lets operators fuse in front of the unit or parallel to the tracks on either side of the machine. An updated track motor allows the Tritan to achieve a top speed of 2.75 miles (4.4 km) per hour in high-speed mode, boosting mobility on jobsites and further decreasing the time spent between fusions.

The devastating floods in Florida resulting from Hurricane Ian will require massive relief and rebuild ing efforts – many of which depend on the trucking industry and thousands of truck drivers. For com mercial vehicles exposed to these types of floodwa ters, this installment of the Bendix Tech Tips series provides fleets and driv ers with technical advice on inspecting and possibly reconditioning air brake, wheel-end, and other safe ty components that have been partially or complete ly submerged.

Salt Water vs. Fresh

The first determination to make is whether the water affecting the vehicle was salt water or fresh water. If it was salt water, you’ll need to immediately begin replacing parts due to its extreme corrosivity, which can remove lubrica tion and put certain parts at much higher risk for unex pected and premature mal

function. Any brake system valve that has been sub merged in salt water must be replaced. In addition, systems and components including air compres sors, air reservoirs, anti lock brake system (ABS) relays, modulators, and brake actuators must also be replaced. “Saltwater corrosion is also a threat to wheelends, since it increases the likelihood of rust jacking and accelerates corrosion of critical surfaces,” said Randy Salvatora, engineer ing manager – Vehicle Sys tems. “So, we recommend complete replacement of the foundation brakes to prevent a potential future failure. And if it’s not clear whether the water was fresh or salt, play it safe and follow the saltwater guidelines.”

Additionally, when re placing any pneumatic sys tem components that have

been subjected to flood conditions, disconnect all contaminated air tubes and hoses, flush them with clean water, and blow them out with air pressure to remove contaminants.

Fresh-Water Damage Guidelines

If you’re certain the power unit or trailer was submerged in fresh water, begin by carefully powerwashing the vehicle – in cluding the foundation brakes. Be cautious while cleaning: Rubber parts and sealing interfaces should not be directly sprayed with the highpressure jet. Irreparable damage to valves will occur when a high-pressure washer di rectly sprays exhaust ports. Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is recommended while wash ing or working on flooded vehicles, whether salt wa ter or fresh. In the unap plied state, most valves have the delivery open to atmosphere at the exhaust

port, so if any exhaust port is submerged, the water has infiltrated the system and can lead to future mal function.

Do not attempt to start a vehicle if fresh water has entered the air compressor or dryer through the air system intakes.

Follow these steps to thoroughly check the vari

ous parts of the air brake system:

Vehicle Valving

• Inspect each component in the pneumatic brake and accessory systems.

• Drain any pressure re maining in the service reservoirs.

• Mark and remove all pneumatic and electrical

connectors at each valve.

• Check for evidence of water or contamination inside the connectors, air hoses, or the component itself.

• Carefully use dry com pressed air pressure (from a stationary com pressor or similar) to blow air through the

pneumatic tubes and hoses. Watch for evi dence of water or con tamination.

• If water or contamina tion is found inside the component, replace the component.

• If no evidence of wa ter or contamination is found inside the com ponent, reassemble the component to the associ ated lines and fittings.

• Repeat this process as you continue to inspect all the valves in the air brake system. Replace any nonfunctioning valves or those showing evidence of ingestion of

water or contaminants.

• Inspect tractor and trailer glad hands and the sup ply and control hoses. Water and contaminants frequently enter the air brake system through unprotected glad hands.

Charging System

• Inspect the air intake, compressor, and air dry er for signs of water or contaminant ingestion.

• Carefully use dry com pressed air pressure (from a stationary com pressor or similar) to blow air through the pneumatic tubing and watch for evidence of water or contamination.

• Use dry compressed air from a stationary air compressor (or suitable portable unit) to get any residual water out of the service tanks.

• Air dryers remove mois ture in compressed air, but they will not remove moisture that’s present in the system beyond the service tanks.

• After reconnecting pneu matic lines, install a new or properly serviced air dryer to aid in removing any residual moisture from the air inlet.

If you find signs of mois ture or other contamina tion, all the pneumatic air

brake components should be replaced: Once water or contaminants get into any of the air brake com ponents, it’s impossible to completely clear the sys tem without total disas sembly. Consider also the guidance included in the TMC Recommended Prac tice 617A for contaminant elimination procedure for tractor, trailer, or dolly air brake systems.

Wheel-Ends and Electronics

Examine all wheel-ends for water, which increases the possibility of corrosion between drum brake lining material and the shoe table

(rust jacking), and can also pool in drums when left standing, increasing the risk of corrosion. You will also need to check the in tegrity of the friction couple between the friction and disc or drum. Water-filled loading docks may not im mediately come to mind as “flood events,” but can certainly have the same impact to some wheel-end components such as slack adjusters.

Remove any fittings and mounting stud nuts, and orient ports down ward to verify that no water has entered brake chambers through the air lines. If water is pres ent, replace the actuator. Follow the appropriate wheel-end relubrication procedures, including regreasing slack adjusters.

• Assess the braking/ safety electronics com ponents by using a tool such as Bendix®

• ACom® PRO™ software to conduct a diagnostic download on systems such as ABS, ESC (electronic stability con trol), and collision mitiga tion controllers, including any front or side radar units. Electronics will vali date through self-check in most cases: If the elec tronic control unit (ECU) is operable, it will check the necessary solenoids, sen sor, harnesses, etc. Make sure to inspect the sevenpin electrical connector in terface between the tractor and trailer as well.

Back on the Road and Follow-Up Support

If your checks turn up no evidence of water or contamination, conduct a thorough test of the air brake system and ABS be fore returning the vehicle or trailer to service. Note that between the floodwa ters and power-washing, it’s possible that ABS wheel speed sensors may have been moved from their nor mal position. Push them back into contact with the exciter ring by hand, and when the wheel turns, normal wheel-bearing play will adjust the sensor posi tion.

“We recommend retest ing and diagnostic checks of the electronic systems after the initial post-flood testing,” Salvatora said. “Additionally, make sure you’re following other ve hicle and system manufac turers’ guidelines: Flooding can have bumper-to-bum per effects, and you can’t be too careful.” b

Light Convoy and Food Drive. The convoy will roll along a 35 km route through five municipalities in Greater Victoria. CHEK news will be

filming live as the trucks start off at 5:40 pm from Og den Point at the Breakwater District and there are many great locations to watch the

convoy from, including light up events in Oak Bay and Langford where the commu nities will gather to welcome the season and residents can

drop off food bank dona tions. More details can be found at IEOA.ca.

The Island Equipment Owners Association rep resents local civil contrac tors, heavy equipment owners and operators, and equipment suppli ers on Vancouver Island. The IEOA incorporated as a Society in 1964 and now 58 years later 195 companies form the mem bership. The IEOA offers members the opportu nity to connect, learn and benefit from each other’s experience and network with other businesses in the industry. The IEOA supports rate equity, fair business practices and giving back to the com munities in which they live and do business. As sisting with community projects in need of equip ment or materials and rolling the convoy to sup port food banks are a few ways they are giving back to the local community.

The first convoy started in 1998 with an idea by a local truck driver, Nirmal Johal. He gathered eleven friends with commercial trucks to drive around town decorated in Christ mas lights and treated the community to a fun sight while campaigning for food bank donations. The fol lowing year there were for

ty eager trucks ready to join and the IEOA assisted with organizing the growing event and then as the quote goes ‘the rest is history.’ In the past twenty plus years this event has experienced tremendous growth and success and has become a traditional part of celebrat ing the holiday season for many people. The trucks reflect the pride of the own ers who decorate with hun dreds of feet in light strings and cheery props ranging from the traditional Snow man and elf themes to the Grinch and Minions. Santa will be enjoying the convoy ride on his mo bile toy shop trailer and is looking forward to waving at the crowd. The bright lights and big sounds of the convoy rolling through the streets bring out thou sands of people to bask in the glow of seasonal fun and absorb the warmth of the theme, giving back to others. Collections to date of over 195,000 pounds of food donations and over $94,500 in monetary dona tions have supported local food banks and nonprofit organizations.

The participant list is almost full at 80 commercial trucks and the drivers are excited to get on the road and share their lights and

sounds with the watching crowds. They are looking forward to seeing the community support them smiling and waving along the route. Plans are well underway to prepare their lights and decorations to be the best they have ever been.

On July 1, 2021, as many Canadians were cel ebrating the national holi day, Shilpa Patel received the kind of visit no one ex pects – and no one would ever want.

It was late in the after noon when two York Re gion police officers arrived on her doorstep in Maple, Ont. with news she had already begun to dread throughout the day: Her husband, Ashish Patel, 46, was killed as he attempted to rescue occupants in volved in a serious collision on I-81 in West Virginia.

“My daughter was try ing to call him several times that morning and every time she called, she said ‘dadda is not picking up the phone,” Shilpa recalls. “I thought, ‘he would nev er do that. He would never not answer.’ Right away, it went into my heart; some thing is wrong.”

At that moment, police in West Virginia were try ing to sort out the events of the horrific tragedy. Police say there were two separate crashes near the entrance ramp to I-81.

There had been heavy rain that morning. The first crash occurred when two passenger cars lost control, hydroplaned, and struck a parked tractor trailer, getting wedged un derneath the trailer. Patel and another truck driver, Adam Miller, 53, of Hag erstown, Md., stopped their own trucks and hur

In a media release that day, Sheriff Nathan Har mon said the incident was one of the worst he had ever seen in his career. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the pedestrians involved with in this accident whom, by their own drive to do the right thing and help those in need, sacrificed their lives to help others,” Har mon wrote.

For his incredible ac tions, Patel, who drove for Bison Transport in Missis sauga, Ont., was honoured posthumously with the On tario Trucking AssociationBridgestone Truck Hero Award at the OTA’s 96th annual conference in To ronto, held Nov. 3rd. His wife, Shilpa, was present and accepted the award.

“When I think of Ash ish and Adam, who were both helping, I think of how both their names start with the letter A,” she says. “A is for ‘angels’ and God made two angels.”

Around the terminal, Ashish was always seen to have a huge smile on his face and was often avail able to help and provide guidance to anyone who wanted it.

“It’s just simply who he was,” says Bison gen eral manager, Dave Martin. “He never second guessed the need to help others. It was that trait that he car ried with him day in and day out and it’s why he was so loved. But unfor tunately, it also resulted in the tragic accident that happened and the loss we have that he’s not here.”

After announcing the award, Jim Devlin, nation al Fleet Account Executive for Bridgestone Canada, admitted this Truck Hero presentation was one of the most emotional he’s given.

“There really aren’t words to describe the heroic and dramatic actions of Mr. Patel. He embodies every thing this honour is meant to be. His courageousness, selflessness in the face of an emergency will never be forgotten.”

Patel will be remem bered by his family, col leagues, and countless friends as a professional, dedicated truck driver and a gracious leader in Vaughn’s South Asian community.

Shilpa adds he was a great ambassador for the trucking industry. He loved being a truck driver, she says, and would convince many of his friends to get their commercial licenses and learn about the indus try.

“He always encour aged people. If someone was looking for a job, he
