Genie Launches Six New Scissor Lifts

Genie announces an all-new, future-focused design for its core slab scissor lift product line that further improves performance and lowers the total cost of ownership for Next-Generation Genie GSTM-1932, GS-2632, GS-3232, GS-2646, GS-3246, and GS-4046 scissor lifts.

“Genie’s Next-Generation Scissor Lifts are redefining the standard for slab scissor lifts and moving this classic MEWP category into the future,” said Christian Dube, Senior Global Product Manager. “Our priority when redesigning these lifts was to drive lower cost of ownership, improve serviceability, and enhance the user experience — all while delivering the quality that our

customers and the industry expect from Genie.”

Enhanced Quality and Lowest Total Cost of Ownership

The most noticeable change with the next-generation slab scissor lifts is the industry-leading curved linkage design. This departure from industry standard reduces machine weight, allowing Genie to use right-sized components — including batteries,

drive motors and other electrical components — which have a lower replacement part cost. Genie benchmarked its new lifts against competitors’ machines, and our own EDrive scissors, to ensure industry-leading performance. Other intentional design changes also improve quality and add to cost savings. These changes are the result of an extensive analysis at the beginning of Genie’s design process to identify opportunities to eliminate rust, limit the opportunity for damage, and reduce wear and tear. For example:

• It’s common for water to pool at the top of machine chassis, resulting in rust. Genie designed its new chassis to mitigate stagnant water in these areas.

• Extension decks can be damaged or bent during use; Genie added reinforcement steel in targeted locations to reduce damage.

• During loading and unloading, operators occasionally mis-fork the side pockets, causing damage to the chassis and swing out trays. Genie added steel around these side

cifically designed to meet the demands of 22- to 35-ton excavators and feller bunchers, making it a robust choice for the most difficult site conditions. Unlike competitors that offer lateral tilt as an expensive add-on, the M52 comes standard with a 100-degree lateral tilt for enhanced control. Its spiralized drum en-

sures even distribution of material across the cutters, doubling as a bite limiter for improved performance. The M52 is compatible with various Quadco teeth options, including all-steel or carbide, making it adaptable to a variety of applications.

Built with professional contractors in mind, this attachment is designed to out-

last many lighter alternatives on the market. The M52 also features a built-in universal boom adapter, offering equipment dealers and rental fleets the flexibility to switch carriers quickly—just replace the pins and sleeves, and you’re back to work, saving both time and money. SP

pockets to reduce the chance for damage to the chassis.

And these are just a few examples.

“On their own, each individual update is an incremental improvement. But, when considered together as a system, and across the product line, the result is a family of machines that add value by reducing costs while improving performance and serviceability,” Dube said.

Modernized Design Improves Serviceability

Throughout the redesign, Genie focused on increasing service parts commonality and consistency of the component layout across the product line. Overall, there are fewer serviceable compo-

nents than with previous generations; of the components that remain, at least 70% have commonality across the product line. This simplifies machine fleet management and should increase uptime. Fleet management is further improved by incorporating a consistent parts layout in easy-to-access locations; a win for service technicians who work on multiple models.

The most common maintenance item when managing a fleet of slab scissor lifts is the batteries, which were an area of focus for Genie. One example of how Genie is delivering on service parts commonality is through an update that uses just two battery part numbers across the entire slab scissor lift product line. Furthermore, in response to

customer feedback and regional preferences, the units are available with commonly used high-quality FLA batteries as standard for customers in North America, and standard maintenance-free AGM batteries for customers in other regions around the world. Lithium-ion will be available as an option globally. Finally, Genie developed Battery Guard as an option to help protect owners’ investment recognizing that battery theft is a common problem.

Re-Imagined for an Enhanced User Experience

On the jobsite, operators will enjoy a completely re-designed platform that improves productivity and comfort when working at height. On the popular GS-1932, standard fixed guard rails allow

users to drive through most common doors without the need to pause and fold guardrails down. The platform is 20% larger, offering more room for two people to work comfortably indoors. Across the range, operators will notice other subtle details that enhance comfort at height. When talking with customers, one of the common critiques of products available in the market today is the “flex” that occurs when standing on an extension deck. Genie solved this problem by reinforcing the extension deck across the range, giving the extension deck more structure.

The new Smart Link platform controller is completely redesigned to be 30% lighter than the previous version and incorporates a more ergonomic design. Additionally, because it is modular, parts of the controller can be replaced without requiring replacement of the whole – another example of reducing parts replacement cost. The control system also has been updated to align to a new ISO standard (ISO 21455:2020).

Lastly, in keeping with regional preferences, Genie Lift Tools Spill Guard hydraulic oil containment system will be standard on next-generation scissors offered in North America. Spill Guard is an option for the rest of the world.

Several models of the next generation Genie GS slab scissor lifts will be available for preview in the

at ARA Jan. 29-Feb. 1 in Las Vegas. Deliveries to customers in North America will begin in late 2025. SP

The Tech Dilemma Facing Dealers

Adapting to the ongoing transformation of the construction industry, the successful construction equipment dealer of 2034 will look a lot different than the dealer of today. So says Maria Metz and Carl-Gustaf Goransson from Automative and Construction Equipment Consultancy, abcg.

Despite a pulling in of reins in 2024, the global construction equipment industry is still galloping along at historically high levels — with forecasts indicating still more growth in the years ahead. This is good for construction equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their dealers. However, the future of the industry is not going to be business as usual. Although experiencing a sluggish start, widespread electrification of equipment IS going to happen, and this, coupled with the global trend for machines to be both more connected and increasingly autonomous means the business model dealers have relied upon for many years has to change. We’re not just talking about

adding a few digital technologies and services, what is going to happen will fundamentally shift the traditional relationship between dealer and customer — and the OEM and dealers.

Construction dealers are an integral part of the supply chain between OEMs and construction customers. They play a key role in not only distributing equipment and parts, but also in servicing equipment. However, the industry is changing on several fronts. At the consultancy firm abcg we call this the triple technology challenge: Electrification, Digitalization and a business model change. It will take years to fully form, but construction equipment is transitioning to becoming fully electrified. This

will have several important implications for dealers. Many electric components have a longer life cycle than current mechanical or hydraulic components. When equipment is powered by batteries and motors rather than a combustion engine, this will have a profound impact not just on parts sales revenues, but also income from engine overhauls and rebuilds — and much else besides.

And whereas once OEMs took a “hands off” approach to dealing directly with end users and the buyers of their equipment, now they are increasing the customer facing software supplied with their equipment. The dealers have often no corresponding revenue stream from this software as they cannot add much value.

Just as in all other aspects of our lives, the customer is getting more technically sophisticated. Not just large contractors but also medium and small players expect more digital information. This could be to locate or remotely operate or monitor equipment, or to schedule repairs or machine rentals. This can already be done through marketplaces on

different platforms and risks cutting out the dealer (or at least further reducing the relationship between the dealer and the customer). The increased use of BIM (Building Information Modeling) software by building companies and contractors is a good example of a change in the industry.

This revolution of the industry will not happen overnight but will most likely be an ongoing evolution that takes a decade — or even more. Also, certain regions will move quicker than others. Regulations on emissions will drive the speed of transition. So, this isn’t going to happen overnight, but even so, the lead time to adapt to changes being driven by the triple technology challenge is long and dealers cannot wait to act. Dealers need to act now. Just developing or hiring employees with new skills will take time. Also new investments need to be evaluated based on future needs.

Critical to the strategy will be to determine what

key attributes the dealer of the future needs to keep, what can be discarded — and what needs to be developed. One thing is for sure — dealers need to remain the trusted resource of their customers. OEMs and digital players will come in closer contact with the customer, but they can never have the close, personal relationship local dealers have with customers.

Dealers also do the invaluable task of reporting back to OEMs the “voice of the customer.” Most OEMs will never have the local “in the dirt” knowledge of the customer and their needs.

Dealers need to secure and develop new skills needed to thrive in the industry of the future — which will get here sooner than we think. Both in the service department and in the customer management and care section. The transformation of the dealership with new people and skills will allow for the development of new services and digital solutions. This should allow the dealer to make up for the

shortfall of the profit margin on parts, labor, and equipment that is bound to happen with the rapidly evolving changes to the construction equipment dealer business model.

Better use of digital and AI tools can also support the sales process and reduce costs. Efficient and proactive office support to field personnel will become the norm. For example, with remote monitoring of equipment, dealers can schedule all maintenance, repairs and replacement in advance. Most construction dealers are aware of the challenges that face them. But equally, most haven’t started to work on their strategies to make sure they remain in control and profitable in the future. If the electric, connected, autonomous and diversified industry of the future isn’t to steal their lunch, dealers need to start planning and executing their change management programs — and soon. SP

The midsize machine is the smallest in Yanmar’s current lineup of compact track loaders and offers superior transportability and maneuverability in construction, utility and rental applications. The machine provides Yanmar reliability and innovative features to boost efficiency, performance and ease of use.

“The TL65RS is a perfect fit for tighter jobsites where operators need to balance power and maneuverability,” said Peter Ovrebo, product management director — North America, Yanmar Compact Equipment North America. “Our signature reliability allows the unit to thrive in a wide variety of jobs.”

Like each new Yanmar compact track loader, the radial-lift TL65RS is a durable, construction-grade machine.

A 67-horsepower Yanmar Tier 4 Final diesel engine and 2,100-pound rated operating capacity maximizes performance and productivity for the best possible ROI. Operators can efficiently navigate the jobsite with the TL65RS’ travel speed of up to 7.5 mph.

The new compact track loader maximizes performance with a torsion axle suspended undercarriage featuring a pivot link system at the rear axle. The linkage technology utilizes a spring

load to reduce oscillation and stabilize the machine, improving material retention and ride quality. Additionally, the TL65RS can be optioned with a 26.7-gpm high flow, optimized with large line sizes, hydraulic coolers and direct-drive pumps for more flow and pressure directly to the attachment and reducing power loss.

Operators can work longer in comfort with the machine’s standard mechanical suspended seat; and a stateof-the-art 7-inch touchscreen display provides convenience on the job. Premium 360-degree visibility enhances jobsite awareness and safety, which is bolstered by the inclusion of a removable roof hatch escape.

The TL65RS boasts multiple options to enhance productivity and ease of operation. A work tool positioner allows operators to create a preset for the angle of the attachment based on the job, while return-to-position technology enables them to set a designated height for the loader arms. Self-leveling technology utilizes dual-direction capabilities to automatically level the load while raising and — something not seen on many other compact track loaders — lowering the loader arms. Auto two-speed allows the machine to shift

automatically between lowand high-speed modes for a smoother ride. This gives operators more control in spaces with limited room, grading and other applications requiring finesse. Speed-sensitive ride control provides users the convenience of enhanced material retention at higher speeds without needing to actively switch the feature off while transitioning to slower-moving applications like grading.

These innovative offerings, as well as many others, help increase efficiency and make the machine easy to learn, allowing for a quick training process for users of all experience levels.

The TL65RS offers Yanmar’s optional SmartAssist Remote telematics. The service provides an array of features, including error detection and notification to real-time operational status updates and daily work reports. SmartAssist improves security with integrated theft protection that allows the owner or fleet manager to set a range from a specific location and trigger an alert if that range is exceeded.

The TL65RS has a 2-year/2,000-hour warranty to back its claim of reliability and quality control. The machine’s durable steel-em-

bedded rubber-tracked undercarriage offers construction-grade reliability, while heavy-duty bar-tread tracks complement the undercarriage through better ride quality and reduced vibration. The bar-treaded tracks provide year-round depend-

ability, increasing traction in extreme conditions like snow, mud and soft soils. Additionally, Yanmar provides a 1-year/1,000-hour warranty on the tracks.

Simple service is another standout feature of the TL65RS with features

such as easily accessible daily checkpoints and removable skid plates for quick cleaning when needed. It also includes three-panel engine access and a swing-out radiator that can be opened without tools. SP

How To Choose The Right Forestry Mulcher

With so many different types of forestry mulching equipment, choosing the right one for your project might seem daunting at first.

Luckily, Fecon is wellversed in forestry mulching and know how certain products can impact the efficiency and success of your work.

Understanding Forestry Mulchers

As a quick refresher, forestry mulchers are powerful machines designed to clear brush, trees, and other vegetation by grinding them into mulch. There are three main types of forestry mulchers: deck mulchers, disc mulchers, and drum mulchers:

Deck mulchers: Deck mulchers utilize swinging blades to quickly and efficiently cut small vegetation. They excel in managing dense undergrowth, delivering a moderately fine finish. While they can cut larger material into sections, their strength lies in quickly clearing brush, making them an ideal choice for projects requiring speed and efficiency in processing lighter vegetation.

Disc Mulchers: Disc mulchers utilize a spinning disc with fixed cutting teeth and operate quickly and efficiently. While they can fell larger trees, their primary

function is rapid timber processing. They are unmatched in their ability to quickly process standing trees, making short work of material that other types might process more slowly. However, the trade-off for speed is a coarser finish.

Drum Mulchers: Drum mulchers offer the most versatility, capable of processing both large and small material effectively. While they might not match the speed of a deck mulcher in clearing brush or a disc mulcher in processing standing timber, they excel at delivering a fine, even finish across various materials. This makes them a go-to choice for operators who need to handle a variety of tasks with a single attachment.

Each is suited for different tasks and terrains, so assess your specific needs first.

Key Features To Look For In A Forestry Mulcher

Now that you know about the different types of mulching equipment, let’s talk about key features to consider when choosing your machine and attachments:

Cutting And Processing

Capacities, And Desired Finish: When choosing a forestry mulcher, understanding each type’s cutting and processing capacities is essential, as well as the desired finish you want to achieve. Each shines in different applications; sometimes, a combination of these is necessary to achieve optimal results. Deck mulchers are highly effective for rapidly clearing brush and smaller vegetation, delivering a medium finish. Disc mulchers are unrivaled in high-speed timber processing, excelling with standing trees but leaving a coarser finish. Drum mulchers provide the greatest versatility, handling both large and small materials while offering a fine, even finish across various conditions.

Hydraulic Power And Efficiency: The performance of a forestry mulcher is heavily influenced by the hydraulic horsepower provided by the carrier machine. When selecting a mulcher, it’s crucial to ensure that the carrier offers sufficient hydraulic flow and pressure to match the mulcher’s specifications. Bal-

Key features of the new electric E313 include:

Latest New Holland CR11 Combine Harvester Gets New Tires

Michelin is launching two new MICHELIN CEREXBIB 2 tires, the result of an exclusive partnership with New Holland and the CNH Group.

Michelin, the world leader in tire manufacturing, founded in 1889, and New Holland, a renowned pioneer in agricultural machinery, founded in 1895, share two fundamental values - excellence and innovation.

In an exclusive partnership with New Holland, Michelin has developed two new tire sizes specially designed for the CR11 combine harvester. In effect, its dimensions and weight represented a unique development challenge - how to minimize soil compaction given the exceptional width of the machine and its tires.

“We are proud of our partnership with New Holland. It was a real technical challenge. Innovation and excellence are part of the Group’s DNA,” said Nicolas Reboul, OE Sales Agricultural Director. “That’s why Michelin will continue to play a major role in tomorrow’s agriculture, by promoting an

increasingly environmentally friendly approach while improving productivity.”

Michelin and New Holland have signed an exclusive two-year supply agreement.

The addition of two new sizes, VF900/65R46 CFO and VF 800/70R46 CFO, expands the dimensions offered in the MICHELIN CEREXBIB 2 range.

These two new sizes are designed to meet two significant technical challenges:

• The load capacity of

the new machine, with its much larger hopper (20,000 liters) and much wider header (15 meters).

• The constraints concerning the diameter and width of the vehicles, in order to comply with the various European regulations for road transport. These new sizes, offering an exceptional load capacity of 19 metric tons per tire, and an impressive diameter of 2.32 meters (for the VF900/65R46 CFO size), represent a major

advance in agricultural tire technology.

Combined with a new rear axle configuration, these high-performance tires not only increase the vehicle’s footprint by 23% and reduce ground pressure by 7%, but also optimize overall fuel consumption. In effect it is the only range on the market offering a cyclic load bonus of 10 km/h to increase the load or reduce the pressure in the tires. This speed corresponds to the average speed of the machines at work.

Michelin Ultraflex Technology

The innovative MICHELIN ULTRAFLEX TECHNOLOGY, launched in 2004 with the MICHELIN XEOBIB tires, is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of innovation in the area of agricultural tires. ULTRAFLEX technology provides a larger footprint on the ground, protecting it from compaction and rutting for increased productivity. A study by

England’s Harper Adams University, begun in 2012, shows that tires with MICHELIN ULTRAFLEX TECHNOLOGY, inflated at low pressure, increase yields by 4%. This technology was associated with the very first industrial standard - VF (Very High Flexion), followed by IF (Improved Flexion) from 2006. Together, these two norms have re-defined the use of low-pressure tires. SP

Tigercat Officially Launches 6500 Chipper

Tigercat officially launches 6500 chipper after more than a year of successful field operations involving multiple retailed units.

The 6500 is a heavy-duty down-swing drum chipper designed for high production and maximum flexibility. Rotor speeds are adjustable based on infeed material density and desired chip length – ranging from 12-50 mm (0.5-2 in) – to maximize throughput and product quality.

With a frame that pivots on the undercarriage, the operator is able to adjust the infeed angle for varying feedstock or raise and lower the discharge height to adjust the chip pile size or accommodate top load trailers. The pivoting upper frame also allows for transport on a 46 cm (18 in) lowboy trailer without the need to fold the discharge conveyor to maintain transport height under 4,11 m (13 ft 6 in).

ATTACHMENTS

Maintenance is made easy with convenient service access. The split hog box opens over centre to fully access the rotor and screens for simple knife changes. The grate frame is hydraulically retractable for inspection, service or impact detection. The single discharge conveyor is open on the bottom for clean operation and easy servicing. A tool storage area mounted on the side of the machine hydraulically raises and lowers for added convenience.

An optional large diameter magnetic head pulley is available to effectively remove metal from the end product. The machine is also prepared to accept over-band magnet systems. SP

Hardox HiAce Doubles Service Life Of Reclaimer Buckets

Hardox HiAce wear steel improves the service life of equipment such as reclaimer buckets used by major copper producers.

Mining operations demand tough equipment that can withstand extreme impacts, stresses and wear, day in and day out. Compromising on quality — and safety — can be costly, and keeping operating costs under control is a non-negotiable. You’ve got to build your machinery with the best steels possible to not only stand up to the job, but to boost long-term productivity.

This is where Hardox HiAce wear steel comes into play as a significant factor. Mining and processing copper ore creates corrosive agents such as sulfuric acid and iron sulfates, which attack steel and decrease the service life of equipment used for excavating and transporting the ore.

A case in point is the reclaimer buckets for wheel excavators operated by one of the largest copper producers in the world. This company

was not satisfied with the service life of their buckets and asked one of SSAB’s steel service centers to come up with a better solution.

Enter Hardox HiAce

Hardox HiAce is a recent steel grade developed by SSAB with the sole purpose of resisting corrosive wear. This wear steel has a nominal hardness of 450 HBW, the same as the well-established grade Hardox 450. Under non-corrosive wear conditions, they both provide the same high service life. The distinction lies in how the steels perform when exposed to acidic low pH environments. If corrosion is present, Hardox HiAce can increase service life by 2 to 3 times compared to a 450 HBW steel, depending on the abrasive materials and the acidic conditions.

This made Hardox HiAce

a natural choice when the company wanted to design and manufacture new reclaimer buckets. Hardox HiAce was used for the bucket’s floor and sides, which are exposed to corrosive materials.

Based on the mining conditions these buckets are operating in, the company expects to get twice the service life compared to its previous buckets.

The mechanics of corrosive wear

Corrosive wear is caused by oxidation of the steel’s surface. The oxidation process reduces the hardness of the surface, resulting in an accelerated wear rate. This leads to higher repair costs and a shorter service life than expected – which, of course, can negatively impact productivity and profitability. SP

Takeuchi Manufactures

10,000th CTL

In September 2022, Takeuchi opened its first production facility outside Asia in Moore, South Carolina. It was a whole new venture for Takeuchi, and one that required a great deal of planning, expertise and enthusiasm.

Just two short years later, the 10,000th compact track loader rolled off the line at the Moore facility. Takeuchi’s Moore employees signed the interior engine cover of the 10,000th CTL, making it a once-in-a-lifetime purchase. That milestone machine, a TL12R2 model, was then shipped to Takeuchi dealer, Bennet Equipment & Supply, and sold to Scott Childress of SEC Construction in Greenville, South Carolina.

“Our employees are very proud to have produced so many machines in a relatively short period of time,” said Ralph Wabnitz, director of factory operations for Takeuchi-US. “This achievement also means a lot to this region. Takeuchi has become a major employer in Spartanburg

County, and we’re intent on being good corporate citizens who give back to the community as much as we can. It seems appropriate that this 10,000th machine will stay in this area where it was built with so much pride.”

Producing 10,000 machines in two years is certainly a major accomplishment, and getting there required many on-site peptalks and encouragement from Takeuchi’s headquarters in Nagano, Japan.

“We constantly pushed forward, trying to get better and more efficient each month,” Wabnitz said. “I give a lot of credit to our employees. Every month, we asked them to do better, to do more. And we’ve achieved every goal man-

crease in engine power for the EC400 Straight Boom over the machine it replaces. The new state-of-the-art cab environment is more spacious and packed with new features, ensuring optimum comfort and visibility. Meanwhile improved controls, an electric joystick and travel pedal allow precise controllability for the operator.

The significantly updated cab is not just a comfortable and productive place to be, it’s also a safe one. It offers the ultimate protection against falling debris with its robust roll over protection system and frame-mounted Falling Object Guards, which can also be swung out to help clean the front window. And with 12 mm thick single-piece high-impact resistant glass, the windows not only provide a clear view but the best possible protection.

agement presented us with, from manpower to production quality to safety.”

The past two years spent ramping up the South Carolina facility harken back to the “Takeuchi Way,” the company’s corporate motto and business philosophy which emphasizes quality, customer satisfaction and environmental sustainability. Mr. Takeuchi’s overall message is to put employee safety and product quality as top priorities, without exception.

“We started out with just 11 employees,” Wabnitz said. “Now, we’re up to 146. We kept ramping up every month. The labor market in South Carolina is extremely challenging, with an unemployment rate of just three percent, making it difficult to find the right employees with the ideal skillsets and attitudes. But we’ve assembled a great team, and they’ve made incredible strides over the past two years.”

Now that the Moore facility is almost fully staffed, the team there is manufacturing all five of Takeuchi’s current

When combining these advantages with the machines’ outstanding stability, high visibility and durable design, these excavators are the perfect choice for efficient heavy-duty demolition projects. And with a lifetime frame, boom and arm warranty, they will also prove to be an enduring partner.

Despite their impressive strength across demolition tasks, they are versatile enough to be used across a number of other tasks, such as digging, site tidy-up and truck loading – even loading high-sided trucks thanks to the extended reach of their longer booms.

Furthermore, maintenance is made easy with hydraulic oil and return filter

changes extended to over 1,000 hours.

New must-have features also come as standard including a bigger auxiliary return line for faster attachment movements and, in an industry first, the case drain line feeds returning oil back into the tank and not to a case drain circuit.

Also included in the upgrade are impressive technological advantages such as the Auto Power Boost, boom-and-arm bounce reduction and the ability to adjust boom-down speed, and boom-swing and boom-travel priority.

A reversible cooling fan helps to protect vital machine components from damage through overheat-

ing in dusty demolition environments. In addition, the unique factory-fit dust suppression system removes the need for a separate truck for pumping water, with its optimized positioning of water spraying nozzles helping to capture dust at the earliest opportunity.

The EC300 Straight Boom and EC400 Straight Boom demolition crawler excavators are the first of the range for Europe and North America to be included in the new generation update. The EC400 Straight boom can be ordered from November 2024 and the EC300 Straight boom can be ordered from March 2025. SP

track loader models. Since production started in September 2022, the team has increased the number of units produced each month.

“In the near future, we’ll start manufacturing a new CTL model we think will generate great demand here in the U.S,” Wabnitz said. “The team is excited to help expand the Takeuchi CTL product line.”

Wabnitz himself is preparing for a new chapter. He will retire from his position at Takeuchi in May 2025, and

Christopher Burdette will move into his role as director of operations in Moore. The pair are already working closely together so that Burdette can take over with full confidence next spring. Burdette is also preparing to take his first trip to Japan to visit Takeuchi headquarters very soon.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Burdette said. “It’s an exciting journey. Ralph and this team have a tremendous legacy and that 10,000th unit is a compilation of phe-

nomenal results and crossfunctional efforts. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor and friend to start this process. Ralph has been a tremendous support.”

Takeuchi continues to transform the North American compact equipment market. And now, with the Moore, SC track loader facility fully ramped up, there’s good reason to believe Takeuchi will excel far beyond this 10,000th machine milestone. SP

A Hip Replacement!

Normally work got going around end of March, this year was different.

Head Office wanted Menzies Bay Division to sort and bundle some cedar wood from MacKenzie Sound. We started early in January and it was cold, minus 17. The only reason I was there is I was a scaler. All the other departments were idle except for the boom. I was probably the lowest guy on the seniority list working. Most of the regular boom crew were still laid off, as lots of men from other departments had previous boom experience and used their seniority to bump the junior men. The logs from MacKenzie Sound were all cedar. Only four sorts, cedar sawlog, shingle cedar, gang cedar, and cedar pulp. All the bundles were wrapped with four bundle wires so we had two guys at the breakdown float pulling wires. We had so many bundle wires the float was starting to sink. The wood got sorted real fast and kept us four scalers very busy. Fred Trant and I were company scalers, Fred Ivan was a faller who had a scalers ticket and the fourth was Bob Tracy from Garret Log Scaling contractor. This wood was being scaled for government so we had government check scalers visit at least once a week. There wasn’t much other logging in the area so the check scalers wouldn’t have any one else to check. I was checked

by Bruce Gerhart. He replaced my scale with his because I missed a log that was under the rest of them.

Heading out to do some scaling, I placed my can of Chicken Noodle soup on the heater. A bit later coming back into the shack, I noticed my soup can with a bulge. I stuck the can opener in and the noodles burst out covering the ceiling as we had the stove turned up for the cold weather.

Sometime later the division is operating full bore now, with everyone returning to their regular jobs. I headed out to scale a pocket of cedar sawlogs. I stepped onto a cedar log, walked down its length and jumped onto a cedar slab about two feet by a foot. I walked down the length and jumped onto the stiff leg. My caulks stuck into the slab pulling my hip joint. After that I felt pain in my hip. The pain didn’t go away. Went to see my Doctor Phipps who sent me for x-rays. Once the x-rays were back he sent me to see Dr. Leete who told me I needed a hip replacement, my bones were dying from necrosis.

The Workman’s Compensation Board asked me

to go to a hearing to find out if my injury was work related. Erik Erickson was a union representative who helped me at this hearing. A long day of asking me lots of questions about my activities. In the end they okayed my claim. So I started receiving WCB benefits. Waiting for the hospital to call to schedule my surgery was taking some time. WCB was bugging me about when I was getting my surgery. I told them to phone my doctor and the hospital to find out. Apparently the hospital only budgeted for two hip replacement joints a month and there were a few people ahead of me. When WCB found that out they bought a hip joint for $2,100 and I had hip replacement surgery on Dec. 10, 1993.

The hospital stay was for six days. I was in some pain and couldn’t sleep, rang my buzzer and the nurse would come and give me a shot with something that made me sleep. About the third time I rang the buzzer the nurse came into the room, I put my butt out for a shot. When the nurse saw this she brought me some Tylenol Threes, I wasn’t going to get

Yanmar CE Launches New Zero Tail Excavators

The ViO38-7 and ViO33-7 mark the latest advancements to the iconic zero-tail swing excavator range from Yanmar CE.

Replacing the existing ViO38-6 and ViO33-6, these next-generation models boast improved performance, efficiency and operator comfort – all wrapped in a sleek and compact ‘Premium Red’ package.

Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA (Yanmar CE) has announced the launch of two next-generation zero tail swing excavators: the reimagined ViO38-7 and ViO33-7. Previewed at 2024’s GaLaBau exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, the units are designed to excel in a wide variety of applications; including (but certainly not limited to) civil engineering, landscaping, construction, and municipal work. Replacing Yanmar’s existing ViO38-6 and

ViO33-6, the new and improved models are ideal for projects where space comes at a premium, and where performance and operator comfort remain paramount.

The ViO38-7 and ViO337 offer substantial upgrades over their predecessors. The ViO38-7, with an Operating Weight (OW) of 3,585 kg, delivers a bucket digging force of 32.8 kN at 2,200 rpm. The lighter ViO33-7, at 3,265 kg OW, provides 30.69 kN of digging force, meaning that both of these highly compact units can handle demanding tasks in tight spots with ease. Both machines also benefit from hydraulic system improvements and an 18.5 kW Yanmar engine, resulting in smoother, faster operations

and a 7% improvement in excavation efficiency compared to their previous counterparts.

The boom swing angle has been improved to the left side of the machine, with an effect on the turning radius of both units; resulting in a reduction of 115 mm compared to previous models, and providing operators with greater versatility and a wider working range. Additional changes to the lower body position and bucket shape enhance clearing ability during forward excavation, making these models highly adaptable to different job site conditions.

The ViO33-7’s narrow width of 1,550 mm makes it perfectly suited to meet the dynamic needs of our modern, congested landscape, as does the ViO38-7’s width of 1,740 mm. Both models are also highly transportable, with transport weights of 3,210 kg (cabin) and 3,090 kg (canopy) for the ViO33-7, and 3,530 kg (cabin) and 3,405 kg (canopy) for the ViO38-7. Improvements to the travel motor and hydraulic pump also enhance

the efficiency of earth removal work.

Combined, these updates allow the excavators to travel faster on slopes, reducing overall travel time. The ViO33-7 now offers a maximum speed of 4.8 kph – a 7% increase in speed on level ground – and a 25% improvement in speed under load. Additionally, the standard automatic speed deceleration function contributes to more efficient operation, ensuring that every second on the jobsite is used effectively.

Operator comfort and modern luxury have all been a

key focus in the development of the ViO38-7 and ViO33-7.

Responding to direct customer feedback, both new units introduce a bold new design that merges Yanmar’s signature zero-tail swing functionality with a sleek, modern aesthetic. These models offer a striking appearance finished in Yanmar’s staple ‘Premium Red’ paint, while also delivering ease and practicality to the operator, including enhanced visibility, better transportability, and improved safety features.

The ergonomically redesigned cabins provide a more spacious and qui-

eter environment, boosting both safety and comfort during long working hours. Meanwhile, a new 4.3-inch color display adds a modern touch to the inside of the cabin, while key updates like optimized air conditioning vents and accessible storage options further refine the operator experience. These thoughtful enhancements make the ViO38-7 and ViO33-7 ideal for operators seeking both functionality and comfort across a wide range of job sites. SP

TJ Hunt Trucking Improves Efficiency With Kenworth T880s

Since 1996, TJ Hunt Trucking has grown to become a top provider of dump truck and flatbed hauling services for construction companies, homeowners, local municipalities, and state and federal agencies across the tri-state area of Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company’s fleet of red and black Kenworth T880s are hard to miss, and the trucks reflect the company’s image as being a reliable and quality company to do business with.

“We have about 54 trucks in our fleet, the majority being T880 dump trucks with a few tractors set up to haul flatbeds,” said TJ Hunt, TJ Hunt Trucking owner.

“We’ve run Kenworth T880s ever since the model was introduced in 2013, and it’s been a great truck for our operation. We’ve owned just about every other truck make there is, and the T880 is the best of the best. It’s a versatile and reliable truck. Plus, our drivers love them. Kenworth is known for building high-quality trucks, and that’s the image we want

to mirror as a company.”

According to Hunt, TJ Hunt Trucking transports a wide range of materials, including asphalt, topsoil, dirt, debris, gravel, and construction materials for large-scale projects.

When the company opened for business in ’96, it acquired aftermarket equipment. After a few years, the company was in a position to begin buying new.

“The first new trucks I ever bought were two Kenworth W900Ls,” Hunt recalled. “I wasn’t quite sure at the time which trucks I wanted to buy, but I had a friend who worked at MHC Kenworth –Chattanooga, and he sold me on Kenworths. For it being my first new truck purchase, I wanted to make the right decision, and he was right. Twenty-plus years later, we’ve

continued adding more Kenworths to our fleet and still have a great relationship with our local dealer.”

According to Hunt, several years ago, the company began a transition to specifying its trucks with automatic transmissions to make them easier for its drivers to operate. More recently, TJ Hunt Trucking started buying T880s with the PACCAR TX-18 Pro following its introduction in 2022, which integrates with the PACCAR MX-13 engine the company had been running in its trucks. The PACCAR TX-18 PRO builds off the TX-18 heavy-duty on-highway transmission platform with enhanced capabilities for heavy vocational on/offhighway applications.

According to Hunt, the company recently did a

benchmark test between a T880 spec’d with the integrated PACCAR Powertrain and a truck with a different powertrain package to see the difference in performance. The outcome was significant, with the PACCAR Powertrain-equipped T880 achieving a 2-mpg fuel economy improvement* over the other truck.

“It was an impressive result, we wouldn’t have guessed there would be that big of a difference in fuel economy,” said Hunt. “We’ve been gradually transitioning our fleet to the MX-13 engines with the TX-18 PRO transmissions once that became available. Our trucks average about 70,000 miles per year, and the 2-mpg difference between powertrain packages is significant. The integrated PACCAR Powertrain offering is more efficient.”

Looking ahead, Hunt said the company purchases approximately seven new T880s per year on average to replace older equipment and to keep up with growing demand. Kenworth T880s with the PACCAR Powertrain will continue to have a larger presence within the fleet.

“We do most of our truck maintenance in-house, so consistency across the fleet makes it easier for our mechanics to work on trucks and have spare parts ready,” said Hunt. “Between the reliability, driver satisfaction, durability, and versatility of our Kenworths, the T880s have proven to be an excellent truck for what we do and the services we provide.”

Kenworth Truck Company, founded in 1923, specializes in the design and manufacture of The World’s Best® heavy- and mediumduty trucks. Fastfrate Group’s new location is strategically located within the CentrePort Canada Rail Park, currently in development by Focus Equities Inc.

This milestone marks the completion of a $55-million project, strategically designed to enhance Fastfrate’s presence in the Manitoba and Western Canada markets and provide a full range of transportation and logistics services to its clients.

“Fastfrate’s expansion here in CentrePort is exciting, and once again highlights Manitoba as a transportation hub for North America. This strength enables Fastfrate to offer unique and efficient supply chain expertise. We are pleased to celebrate their growth in Manitoba,” said Jamie Moses, Minister of Business, Mining, Trade, and Job Creation.

Fastfrate Group’s new

114,000-square-foot facility brings together its three key divisions—Fastfrate, ASL Distribution Services, and Precision Parcel & Package Deliveries—under one roof. This co-location streamlines operations, enabling the company to offer a full range of services, including intermodal LTL and FTL, Intra-West Trucking, warehousing, distribution, and final mile parcel deliveries.

“This grand opening is a significant milestone for Fastfrate Group as we expand our footprint into Manitoba and Western Canada, and elevate our service offerings,” said Manny Calandrino, CEO of Fastfrate Group. “We’ve been a part of the Winnipeg community for over 50 years, and this new facility will allow us to better meet the growing demands of our customers while creating new opportunities for the local economy.”

With 56 dock doors and extensive cross-docking capabilities, the facility is designed to handle high volumes efficiently, ensuring smooth operations for both domestic and international shipments. The new facility is strategically located to capitalize on road and rail infrastructure and to expand cross-border services with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico corridor. Its proximity to major transportation routes enables Fastfrate to expedite shipments, tap into new markets, and meet the growing demand for cross-border services, drayage, and eCommerce fulfillment.

The new facility positions Fastfrate Group for continued growth in Manitoba, with plans to expand its workforce as operations scale. The colocation of Fastfrate, ASL Distribution Services, and Precision Parcel & Package Deliveries marks a significant

operational milestone, enabling the company to deliver end-to-end supply chain solutions from one centralized location, enhancing efficiency and service offerings for its customers.

“This model of integrating multiple service lines under one roof will be a blueprint for future expansion in other regions,” said Ron Tepper, Executive Chairman of Fastfrate Group. “It’s a transformative step for our business, and we are excited about the positive impact it will have on our clients and the Manitoba community.”

“Today marks an incredible milestone in Rosser as we

celebrate Fastfrate Group’s grand opening in the Rail Park,” said Reeve Ken Mulligan, RM of Rosser. “Fastfrate broke ground on this site in 2023, and we are delighted to see this transformational project open and operational less than a year and a half later.”

“The CentrePort Canada Rail Park is critical to the trimodal inland port’s vision and value proposition,” said Carly Edmundson, President and CEO of CentrePort Canada Inc. “Congratulations to Fastfrate Group on their new facilities, and on being the first company to start operations in the Rail Park.”

Perkins Launches New 2600 Series 13-Litre Engine

Available in the second half of 2025, the new Perkins 2606 power generation engine offers excellent load acceptance, fuel efficiency and versatility

Perkins today announced the development of the Perkins 2606 diesel engine optimized and purpose-built for electric power generation applications.

Initially available for use in lesser and currently non-regulated stationary territories, this 13-litre, six-cylinder engine leverages the outstanding power density and fuel efficiency of the industrial Perkins 2600 Series platform announced last year.

To date, engineers have completed more than 30,000 hours of design validation and have more than 120 patents

granted or pending, across the entire 2600 Series engine platform. The 2606 engine for electric power is scheduled for commercial production in the second half of 2025.

The latest addition to the comprehensive Perkins electric power range delivers a powerful 321-523 kW of prime power and 365-572 kW for standby requirements.

The 2606 engine provides flexibility by easily switching between 50 and 60 Hz and across a range of voltages, enabling one generator set to satisfy requirements in diverse regions and applica-

tions. It is ideally suited to the power demands of critical applications, data centres, power plants, industrial and real estate, among other installations. For example, the engine is also suitable for power demands in prime applications, such as those found in remote worksites.

“Generator sets still remain the core foundation for stationary and mobile power generation needs across the globe, especially in places where the electrical grid is not readily available or reliable,” said Jaz Gill, vice president of Perkins global sales market-

ing, service and parts. “Diesel engines are still the driving force for these generator sets, so the Perkins 2606 engine takes advantage of our deep investment in the 13-litre engine platform to deliver a dynamic, versatile power plant that provides outstanding performance at low total ownership and operating costs.”

The 2600 Series is designed to perform at altitudes of up to 3,500 metres, and in extreme ambient temperatures as high as 60 C (140 F) and as low as minus 40 C (minus 40 F) with aids.

The engine supports quality, reliability, and easier maintenance through numerous design enhancements, including the integration of components and a reduction in the number of leak joints by more than 45%. Together, the upgrades result in low fluids consumption and extended oil and fuel filter service in-

Canada Cartage is one of North America’s largest providers of transportation and logistics services. Founded in 1986, CPX is one of Western Canada’s most well-known and reputable temperature-sensitive carriers. They provide refrigerated full truckload (FTL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation solutions, as well as offering cold storage cross-docks and warehouse operations in Surrey, B.C., and Calgary, Alberta. CPX also has freight brokerage service for any overflow of loads. The company has a mix of company drivers and owner operators, and almost 600 temperature-sensitive trailer units.

tervals as long as 1,000 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime.

The 2606 engine is compatible with renewable liquid fuels such as 100% hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO), B100 distilled Biodiesel, and up to B100 fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) standard biodiesel by working with your Perkins distributor. To preserve the performance and integrity of the engine

whilst reducing the risk of downtime or failure, fuels must meet the specifications and characteristics described in official Perkins fluids guideline documents found on www.perkins.com. Additionally, the engine’s core architecture supports the future development of spark-ignited natural-gas and hydrogen fuel capabilities. SP

Like Canada Cartage, CPX provides services to customers in the grocery and food sectors. CPX’s Western Canada and West ern U.S.A. services in tem perature-sensitive transpor tation are a great fit with Canada Cartage’s food and beverage transportation ser vices in B.C., Alberta, and the coastal states of Ameri ca. Combined with Canada Cartage’s Eastern Canadian expertise in dedicated grocery and food deliveries, the acquisition of CPX creates a convenient and efficient national solution for companies requiring temperaturesensitive transportation.

Labatt Invests $5.47

Million

To Expand Fleet In Quebec

Labatt Breweries of Canada has acquired 10 new batterypowered trucks for its logistics operations in Quebec.

The purchase is the largest single order of VNR Electric trucks for Volvo Trucks in Canada, representing nearly 25 per cent of their deliveries. Labatt’s latest investment is in addition to the recent announcement of the purchase of it’s first zero-emission mobile service repair truck for the province.

“Integrating electric trucks into our fleet marks a significant milestone for our operations and our goal to deliver beer to our customers in the most efficient way possible,” said Sarah Genetti, Senior Director of Procurement and Sustainability at Labatt Breweries of Canada. “This initiative is one additional step toward our global ambition of achieving net-zero emissions across our business by 2040 and reflects our commitment to adopting innovative solutions that reduce our carbon footprint.”

Labatt’s $5,470,000 in-

vestment in the new electric truck fleet was supported by a $750,000 contribution from the Government of Canada through it’s Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emissions Vehicles (iMHZEV) program while the Government of Quebec contributed $875,000 as part of the Écocamionnage “Part 1 – Acquisition of technologies” program.

“Electrifying transportation is a powerful way to tackle climate change,” said the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change.

“By integrating electric vehicles, companies like Labatt are taking meaningful steps to reduce their ecological footprint—efforts that deserve recognition and encouragement.”

Each electric truck eliminates the emissions of approximately six conventional vehicles. The new fleet will achieve a total reduction in

emissions equivalent to that of 60 cars. The Volvo VNR Electric trucks offer a range of up to 280 km with four battery packs of 300 kWh of usable energy. They deliver a power output of 340 kWh, equating to 455hp, with a maximum torque of 4,051 lb./ ft. Additionally, they feature a towing capacity of 80,000 lbs GCWR (gross combination weight rating).

At the Labatt Montreal distribution centre, where each vehicle averages 50 km daily and at the Bois-des-Filion distribution centre, where they average 110 km daily, the new electric trucks are supported by extensive onsite charging infrastructure. Montreal has three singleport and two dual-port ABB Terra 54 and Terra 124 stations, while Bois-des-Filion has one single-port and two dual-port stations. Labatt’s delivery teams have received extensive training to operate the recently purchased electric battery vehicles effectively and driver feedback has been very positive, noting the ease of driving, excellent cabin visibility and the quiet operation of the trucks. Good Food

When we were away from our camp, and not close to a location serving hot food, our standard culinary fare came from boxes containing various kinds of Combat, Individual Ration, more commonly referred to as C-rations.

Each box contained one can of meat and vegetables, such as beans and franks, or spam and a vegetable, or—the absolute worst when cold— ham and eggs, although everyone called them H & MFs (ham and MFS.) Another can usually contained fruit. Other cans, or packages, could offer chocolate, crackers, cocoa powder, cigarettes, and a Folding Pocket Can Opener, which is better known as your P-38.

C-rations typically tasted awful, although their flavor could be made more palatable if they were heated. Most of the guys who drove trucks, or those who operated heavy machinery, learned that the very hot exhaust manifolds of motors proved to be excellent stoves for heating their meals. By puncturing a hole in a can with your P-38, you would then set the can on top of the manifold. Sometimes you might have to leave the motor running so the manifold would stay hot. At other times, the country was so hot that the engines stayed hot for a long time. In 15 to 20 minutes, you were eating a warm meal.

If we were at Camp Haines, we ate at our U.S Navy operated mess hall, or chow hall. Food was served all day from about 0430 to 2100, and there were no restrictions concerning who was served. If you were a soldier, you ate as much, and as often, as you liked.

Navy cooks have always had the reputation of serving the bests meals of any of the armed forces, and our cooks reinforced their legend. Each morning, I looked forward to breakfast because three or four cooks manned separate stoves, and each was surrounded by every imaginable breakfast fixing. You could ask for an omelet with any ingredient, pancakes, waffles, eggs fixed any way, steak and eggs, or simply, any breakfast you could dream-up.

I’m not sure why, but I suspected it was either supposed to be a morale boosting effort, or possibly some offi-

cers just wanted to fly around South Vietnam eating and tasting foods, but our chow hall was awarded the Best Chow Hall in I-Corps designation. Actually, this was a hell of an honor, as we were pitted against the much larger, and better-supplied, chow halls of Danang.

It was my job, and my privilege, to haul at least half of our food supplies from Danang. I had heard that our mess hall’s procurement officer—not sure, but he was probably a Master Chief— excelled at the Navy’s art of comshaw, the literal definition of which is “the other than legal means of procurement.” It may have been that he was just a damned-good barterer, but the foods he procured (secured by whatever means) allowed us to eat honest-to-God home cooked meals. We felt more at home eating in our mess hall than eating those damned H & MFs!

You can imagine, when this much food was available, especially the varied and numerous choices, it often happened that we weren’t able to eat everything we had piled on our plates. Thankfully, our uneaten or partially eaten meals did not go to waste. After we placed our trays at one of the kitchen windows, the crew removed the utensils, napkins, and other nonedible items, and the leftovers were scraped into washed-out 55-gallon steel drums.

Shortly after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, our closest Vietnamese village’s “food envoy” could be seen leaving our camp with one of the drums. He pulled his cart, which was mounted on an axle with two passenger carsized tires, and he made this trip three times every single day.

Driving Highway 1 all the time, I was astounded the first time I saw what happened when he arrived at his hamlet with our leftovers. One person used a large ladle to fill the pots and pans the other village residents had brought. It didn’t seem to bother them

that all the different meats, vegetables, breads, and desserts were mixed. (None of us could fathom having to choke-down that concoction, but then, I doubt that any of us have ever been that hungry.)

All U.S. soldiers were required to take malaria pills every week, and we had all been injected with countless inoculations before we had left the States. Even so, I am sure all of us would have become violently ill if we had eaten from these drums. The Vietnamese, however, ate each meal as though it had been freshly prepared. We never heard of them getting sick. Truthfully, it shouldn’t have surprised us. The fact that they drank from any water source should have given us the clue that their bodies could tolerate anything we gave them.

One thing I never did notice was overweight or obese Vietnamese people. Maybe that was their side-effect from eating from 55-gallon steel drums.

Two weeks before we left Vietnam for home, a dozen of us were sent 20 miles north of Camp Haines to finish a road project the previous battalion had not had time to finish. We were housed at an Army firebase, Landing Zone (LZ) Nancy, and when dinnertime rolled around on our first night, the only mess hall we found happened to be the Army officer’s mess. We filled our plates and enjoyed

a warm meal. The Army officers glared at us, wondering why we were eating with them. When we left in search of a beer, we noticed the mess was well lit, because the electricity was being provided by one of our Seabee battalion’s generators, and our MCB-10 emblems, which were affixed to both sides, looked awfully good. This made us proud!

The next morning, we were not-so-politely ordered to stay out of the officer’s mess. We were told to eat Crations, just like the Army’s enlisted men. We grudgingly ate our cold cans of ham and eggs and then we headed to the jobsite for the day.

After we suffered through more C-rations for dinner that evening, an Army officer stopped by our hut with an

invitation for us to eat with them in their mess for the few days we would be there. That morning, we were told to get out. Now, we were invited back. What was going on?

Then our master chief made us aware that he had hooked his Jeep to the generator during the day and hauled it to an off-site location. He said, as far as he was concerned, the Army must have misappropriated the generator, since it was clearly labeled as US Navy Seabee property. He informed us that he had rightfully reclaimed what surely belonged to us.

After we accepted the Army officer’s invitation to dine with them, our master chief towed the generator back to the mess hall, and then hooked all the wires back

together. We enjoyed hot breakfasts and dinners for the remainder of our stay at the firebase just south of Quang Tri, and the officers realized that we weren’t such bad guys, even though we were just lowly enlisted men. It really is surprising how quickly folks can change their minds when you literally, “Turn their lights out!” SP

Utility Now Offers Lightweight Brake Drum Standard On All Models

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, LLC is pleased to announce that the Trident composite steel shell brake drum from Accuride is now standard on all Utility trailer models.

The Trident brake drums reduce weight by 24 pounds per wheel end, totaling 96 pounds for a dual axle trailer. This makes them lighter than standard cast iron drums, enabling fleets to maximize payloads and lower costs. Utility made the Trident® drum standard on all its flatbed models in 2020, and customers have experienced superior performance since. Five years later, Utility is providing reefer and dry van customers to take advantage of the weight savings. All 2026 model Utility reefers, dry vans and flatbeds will now come with the Trident as a base specification.

Mark Glasgow, Chief of Sales for Utility stated, “Our continuous testing programs,

both in the field and in the lab, have proven the Trident to be the highest quality drums on the market. It comes as no surprise that the Trident drum has been an overwhelming success on our flatbeds, and as an option on our reefers and dry vans. While air disc brakes are the gold standard when it comes to trailer braking, steel shell drums, and specifically the Trident drum, provide an excellent alternative without the added cost.”

“We are very excited to support all of Utility’s premium braking requirements across all their models,” stated Scott Neill, Vice President of Sales – Trailer & Aftermarket for Accuride. “Utility has been an industry leader for 110 years. By including Trident drum as standard equipment on all models, they continue to demonstrate their commitment to advanced braking systems and other safety features in their trailers.” SP

Seaspan Upgrades Coast Guard Vessel

Seaspan is pleased to announce the successful completion of Vessel Life Extension on the Canadian Coast Guard vessel, Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

After undocking at the end of April 2024, the vessel completed an in-water work period in preparation for ship commissioning and sea trials.

“We are proud to partner with the Canadian Coast Guard in maintaining their fleet, so they can focus on missions that matter to Canadians, like protecting the longest coastline in the world,” stated Paul Hebson, Vice President and General Manager of Vancouver Drydock. “This project was both challenging and rewarding, and our team rose to every challenge. Thanks to hard work and dedication, working in collaboration with our CCG partners, we are now even better prepared to take on more work like this in the future.”

The CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier is one of six Martha Black-class icebreakers operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. This project continued the long history of Canadian icebreakers being built and maintained on the west coast of Canada.

“Keeping our vessels in good working order is critical to ensuring that our personnel can provide Canadians with the services they need throughout the year,” said Mario Pelletier, Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard. “Through planned maintenance and refit works, like this important work to extend the life of the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier, we are ensuring that vessels in our fleet remain well maintained and in service.”

Departing Seaspan on August 17, 2024 following sea trials, this marks the successful conclusion of one of the largest and most complex ship repair and overhaul projects ever undertaken at Vancouver Drydock. The entire project consisted of over 100 separate upgrades including; replacement of the ship’s three 2100kW generator sets, replacement of the propulsion drive cycloconverters, repair and refit of the rudder and shafting, installation of a new towing bollard complete with all new underdeck structure and a new Shipboard Integrated Communication system.

This highly complex project required the technical expertise that the team at Vancouver Drydock is known for on the West Coast, including

running new cables and installing new software for upgraded systems such as the propulsion control system (PCS) and new Power Management System, which will ensure optimal efficiency for the vessel. The team also carefully removed the existing ships’ piping and cabling to allow installation of the new generator sets.

With the refit complete, the 83m long vessel is now ready to resume its critical duties in Canada’s Coastal and Arctic waters. Seaspan is proud to have played a key role in supporting the Canadian Coast Guard and returning the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier to the water so it can continue undertaking essential services such as scientific research and search and

rescue operations.

With recent investments in a new drydock and an operations building, Seaspan’s Vancouver Drydock is wellpositioned to continue supporting the Canadian Coast Guard, and other domestic and international customers. SP
