Brandt to Expand Material Handling Division Across Canada

The Brandt Group of Companies has announced a major expansion to its material handling equipment dealer network in a move that is expected to generate $500 million in new revenue and up to 300 new jobs over the next three years.

The demand for aggregates continues to grow with urbanization and infrastructure development, leading to the difficulty of supply and high production costs becoming increasingly evident. MB Crusher equipment is the key to obtaining high-quality aggregates at a reduced cost per pound.

Lower Production Costs at Extraction Sites

Once accumulated, the overburdened materials resulting from the preparation of a quarry often occupy large areas, which could limit the operation of the quarry. Moving these huge stockpiles means moving – at very high costs! – thousands of pounds of material.

Some have found a solution, installing an MB-S23 screening bucket with a 3.5 x 3.5 in grid basket on the Hitachi Zaxis 460 LCH excavator already working in the quarry. In doing so, the customer obtained two types of material: the one with dimensions greater than 3.5 in, retained in the basket, which was directly loaded on the dumper and transported to the crushing plant to continue the processing process. While the material with dimensions less than 3.5 in, is used for filling and making embankments, thus avoiding additional costs for its disposal.

A New Life For Scrap

Often, we do not realize that we are sitting on a pile of money. We are talking about extraction and production waste, which is stockpiled and takes up space, unused. Instead, it can be transformed into quality material, ready to be reused or resold with the MB Crusher bucket. To sum it up, nothing is thrown away: by giving value to the stockpile already available, costs are therefore reduced. As did a company in southern Italy, which had a big problem with the waste of stone material, which continuously required significant transportation, disposal, and treatment costs. Therefore, they decided to “change course” by installing a crusher bucket on his 18,000 lbs. JCB 4CX backhoe, he crushed the waste producing sellable inert material for the installation of substrates.

Secondary Quality Aggregate

The raw materials used in construction are not infinite: for this reason, using “secondary aggregates” – such as the rubble derived from the demolition and redevelopment of old buildings – is a good habit that rewards. These materials used to be considered waste and would

have incurred expensive landfill fees. They are now processed so that they can be reused. By taking full advantage of the heavy equipment already present on site, it is easier to complete the project.

During the demolition of an old grain deposit, the steel present inside the reinforced concrete was recovered and resold, while the overburden material was reused as a road substrate. How? With a BF90.3 crusher bucket installed on the excavator that was already in place.

Volvo Unveils New Excavators

Volvo CE is introducing a new range of excavators designed to give customers an edge with upgrades that include up to 15% greater fuel efficiency, increased productivity, enhanced safety and a slew of operator-friendly features.

The series represents the most significant update to the Volvo excavator lineup in 20 years. The initial launch includes multiple medium and large excavator mod-

els in North America — the ECR145 short swing, EC210, EC230, EC370, EC400 and EC500 crawler excavators — with more models coming in the next several months.

“This new excavator series is the realization of our commitment to our customers. Every design change, innovation and weld were made with our customers’ needs top of mind,” said Scott Young, head of Region North America, Volvo CE. ”All together, these updates will substantially impact their productivity, uptime, employee satisfaction and ultimately, their success.”

More productivity, less fuel

A newly optimized electro-hydraulic system and other features — like a smart cooling system and engine speed regulation for higher torque at a lower rpm — add up to a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency compared with the previous generation while outperforming the prior models.

The enhanced hydraulics enable better machine control and the smooth and precise movement of the boom, bucket and other hydraulic components. Work modes expand to 10 settings, including two specific to power and four specific to automatic ECO modes. A new creep travel mode coupled with boom and arm shock reduction settings give operators tight command of loads and reduce spillage.

“Our customers are looking for ways to increase productivity and reduce expenses, and we deliver on that with these new excavators,” said Sejong Ko, product manager — large excavators at Volvo CE. “Fuel in particular is a major expense, and the improved fuel efficiency will reduce costs with the added benefit of lowering the environmental impact.”

New 27” Vacuum For Vactor 2100i

The Vactor 2100i Combination Sewer Cleaner now has the option of a 27-inch vacuum for longer pulls and deeper suction for solid waste.

“This robust vacuum enables our customers to reach waste from a farther distance,” said Tyler Skolek, Vactor Product Manager. “The new option gives those customers as much vacuum as they need. As with the current 2100i, this feature offers our customers the same reliability and efficiency that Vactor is known for.”

To accommodate the longer vacuum, modifications to the 2100i include reinforcement on the debris body and more structural brackets for the debris body recess. Two silencers help reduce noise for a quieter operation. An additional benefit is it runs cooler with an additional inlet to keep the blower cool.

BCCA Delivers Federal Funding For BC Construction Apprentices

Distributes Apprenticeship Services program funds ahead of schedule, exceeding targets.

BC Construction Association (BCCA) has announced that it has completed delivery, ahead of schedule and within budget, on the most farreaching construction trade apprenticeship drive ever undertaken in British Columbia,

surpassing its funding objective by 2.280M. The Apprenticeship Services workforce development program was financed through the Government of Canada’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy’s Apprenticeship Service. Em-

ployers who registered up to four first-year apprentices in BCCA’s Apprenticeship Ser vices program could qualify to earn up to $40,000 in cash incentives over two years. Since launching in September 2022, the financial incentives offered through Apprenticeship Services have resulted in the hiring and registering of 2075 apprentices in 37 Red Seal trades, and sent payments to more than 1020 qualified employers. Over $15.725M has been injected into the BC economy through BCCA’s Apprenticeship Services program.

“I’m proud of the team at BCCA who delivered the Apprenticeship Services project ahead of schedule and under budget, far exceeding important targets set by the Federal government. The Quietest Vessel On BC Coast Is An Electric Tugboat

HaiSea Marine’s fully electric tugboat, the HaiSea Wamis, is now the first tugboat to receive an Underwater Noise Notation from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), validating HaiSea’s mission of operating one of the greenest tugboat fleets in the world.

“When we formed HaiSea , we had a vision and a dream to design and build one of the greenest tugboat fleets in the world that would serve the Douglas Channel – this Notation proves that together with our partners, we have achieved that dream,” stated Chief Crystal Smith, Elected Chief Councillor, Haisla Nation. “The HaiSea crew, majority of whom are Haisla members, will be operating the greenest and quietest tugboat fleet in the world right here in our home waters.”

The HaiSea Wamis performed sea trials up and down Indian Arm last fall to put its ultra-low underwater noise to the test. Data

was measured over a twoday period from underwater hydrophones to prove the Wamis could perform under established benchmarks for noise. What Is The ‘Tiltrotator Effect’?

Can you improve your energy efficiency when working with your excavator? The answer is yes, in Rototilt’s opinion – by using a tiltrotator.

Both because of the way it changes how you perform your tasks, and according to early tests that indicate significant energy savings when using their latest tiltrotator series. “The results are impressive, to say the least,” says Sven-Roger Ekström, Product Manager at Rototilt.

Supervising The Supervisors

When I started at Menzies Bay, Ernie Venus was the manager, he had been a faller earlier on in his career.

Ed Herman was the general foreman, who had done some high-rigging. There were seven different departments, each with two or three foremen, and a dedicated office within the main office.

The “bull buckers” for the Falling department were Les Gerluck and Nick Beduik. The Hauling department had one foreman, Jack Walker, who was in charge of travel time. He would mark down the time all the buses would reach the marshalling yard. Back then, travel time was paid up to the minute. Union and companies later switched to “block” travel time. When I started in the Y&L department, the foremen were Vic Bortolotto, Harold Brownson, and Mario Galeazzi. Lyle McMurdo took over Mario’s spot when he retired.

M&B would send the foremen on training sessions, so they would select union men to fill in as charge hands when they were away. I had been on the Safety Committee and Lyle McMurdo selected me to fill in for him. The other two guys were Warren Gionet

and Lorne Carson. Warren went to Iron River and would become a M&B foreman later on, and Lorne was in the Memekay area and I had the Salmon River. We marshalled the crew in the mornings, made crew changes, and collected time cards. Once the crews were gone I would load the pickup with supplies needed for the various crews, stuff from the warehouse, paper towel, grease, gear dope, and then I’d go over to the line shed for chokers, loading lines, and scissor lines for grapple yarder. Then I’d go down to the office to hand in the time cards and do some planning with the other foremen.

I was attending to my duties when I heard Ike Enns call for “FIRST AID!” A few moments later, someone asked for “radio silence”. The channel had to be left open for communication purposes. Not knowing what to do, I just parked and listened to the radio. It didn’t sound like things were going too good. Pretty soon someone came along and filled me in. Jake Epp, faller, was the senior man on the seniority list and he was retiring. For his last week, they took him off the saw

and made him bull bucker.

On July 18,1983 at 11:00 am he died from a heart attack.

With radio silence being observed, I was sent to South Main to tell the fallers what happened. When I got there and told the fallers what happened, one of them was really mad at me saying why didn’t you call us on the radio. I said, “radio silence” was being observed. When I left the area I’m thinking to myself, “call them, they aren’t supposed to be in the bus.”

This job was pretty cool, I was being paid hookers rate

for 8 hours regular and 3 hours overtime every day. I spent three weeks in total on those duties. One weekend, I attended a B.C. Lions football game, when I got to work I was so hoarse I could barely talk! Lots of short answers came out of me that day.

One of the loader operators wanted to be a foreman in the worst way. When he heard about us three getting the temporary charge hand jobs, he tried to put in a grievance, but he was informed that he couldn’t grieve it by his union buddies. Loader

operators were a key position and were hard to replace; the three of us were easily replaced.

My Dad and I discussed what a good job being a foreman would be. Down at the office, there was a board where the company had job postings up for all divisions. I talked to Lyle about it. He took me to the office and conducted a job interview with me. I would check the board every so often. Later, I learned that a guy wouldn’t necessarily get a posting in Menzies Bay. As I was pretty well

locked into life in Campbell River, I wasn’t about to move to another town!

I figured out why Mario Galeazzi would spit snoose on your feet when he got out of the pickup. Because if you spit out the window it stuck to the side of the truck. That stuff was hard to wash off! SP

At the holding and recycling site, Woitzel is producing RC-1 certified 0/8mm & 8/45mm used as crushing sand and the bigger fraction is used as a stable base, in road construction with high drainage capacities, for example. The R3 runs up to 6 hours daily, producing about 160 t/h. When adding the S5 stacker into the production process, the stacker saves a lot of wheel loader fuel and personnel costs.

How To Recover And Reuse Soil From Construction Sites

The world could run out of topsoil - in about 60 years if we continue to degrade it at the current rate.

In the European Parliament, the first steps for preservation have been taken with the approval of the Nature Restoration Law (NRL), a regulation that provides for the restoration of at least 30% of natural habitats, and the increase of urban green spaces by 2030.

What impact do construction sites have in preserving the soil?

Removing the topsoil to allow for infrastructure construction is standard practice. Excavated earth is usually classified as waste, but it ceases to be waste if it is fully recovered. Recycling and reusing the soil becomes essential not only to save the costs associated with disposal and the potential repurchase of new material, but also to prevent the contamination of the soil with materials from other areas.

Mine Rescue Competition Marks 61st Year

Safety and skill competency were at the heart of the 2024 Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition on May 24 and 25 in the Lac du Bonnet area of Manitoba hosted by The Mining Association of Manitoba Inc. (MAMI) and Tantalum Mining Corporation (TANCO).

This is the 61st year this event has been held, with more than 24 elite mine personnel going head-to-head to see who is the best in the province.

Participating teams showcase their skills and training in scenarios like an underground rescue and a mock first aid incident while their performance is rated and evaluated against standard

mine rescue procedures. In Manitoba’s annual competition rescue scenarios place both underground and on the surface, with teams competing at the mine site and in the community.

Metso releases the new Lokotrack EC range, a new dieselelectric power line to the aggregates market.

All the process functions of the range are electric, significantly reducing the use of hydraulic oil needed in the crushing operations. All Lokotrack EC range units can be powered with external electricity.

In its Lokolaunch event in Tampere, Finland, Metso launched the first two products of the new EC range. Lokotrack LT400J is a 68-ton mobile jaw crusher designed for the primary crushing of hard rock and recycled aggregates. Lokotrack LT350C is a 50-ton mobile cone crusher for secondary and tertiary crushing. To reach high capacity, LT350C is equipped with the new Nordberg HP350e cone crusher, while LT400J counts on the proven Nordberg C120 jaw crusher. New SD2500CS PROTAC Spray Paver from Dynapac increases efficiency by combining two processes together in one machine and in a single operation: paving and spraying.

It applies simultaneously a layer of tack coat emulsion and a layer of asphalt. This not only saves time and therefore costs, but also increases the pavement quality.

The integrated heating system is designed to handle the spraying emulsion with care: A three-stage system ensures to heat up the emulsion as fast as possible but with using only the minimum power needed to reach the target temperature. All that without damaging the tack coat material – fully automatic without any additional user interaction with up to 12kW peak heating power. In addition, the tank heating is synchronized with the electric screed heating to not lose time in the morning to get quickly ready for operation.

Since the integrated emulsion tank with a capacity of 2100L is mounted right in the middle of the machine, the center of gravity is centralized which as well ensures perfect traction in all conditions – independent from the tanks filling level and with an always freed up field of view to all sides at the operator station.

To increase the operator comfort and boost the perfor-

mance on the job site the machine comes with emulsion filling points on both sides to be always able to refill under all job site conditions. In case the machine cannot reach all job areas with the integrated spray bars a hand lance connection gives the possibility to connect a manual lance to also cover the tightest spaces with tack coat.

With a range of up to 200 miles between charges, the truck is equipped with a 282 kW battery pack, which delivers 355 horsepower through a direct-drive motor. A 20 kW wall charger from PACCAR Parts provides overnight charging.

Founded in Indiana and family-owned since 1932, Kittle’s has been a leader in retail while always looking to the future. “That’s why we wanted to be the first in the furniture industry in Indiana

to start using an electric delivery truck,” said Eric Easter, Kittle’s CEO. “With recent advancements in EV technology, especially in commercial vehicles, we believe it’s time to test and move forward with trucks that eliminate emissions while reducing our consumption of fossil fuels. And we’re finding the truck is delivering as promised. The K270E is less expensive to operate and has fewer service and maintenance requirements. This helps offset the higher lease rate. Our EV Kenworth from PacLease allows us to move into the future.”

According to Tyler Baker, Kittle’s director of operations, the K270E has been in service since November 2023. “We’ve been tracking the performance and project we will be saving $10,000 a year in fuel alone,” he said. “And our cost

for recharging has been negligible – we’re not seeing much of a difference in our electric bill. We use the truck starting at 7:00 in the morning, and it’s returned to the charging pedestal by 6:00 in the evening. It’s then plugged in and ready to go in the morning.”

Baker said 50% of Kittle’s customers are within a 10mile radius of its distribution center in Fishers. “The K270E serves those customers and goes back and forth to our distribution center, normally putting on between 75-100 miles per day. We have gone as many as 150 miles between charges and the truck has performed nicely. We expect the truck to put on about 20,000 miles a year. Our diesels average 25,000 miles.”

According to Baker, the main difference drivers have found between electric and diesel is the get-up-and-go

power of the electric Kenworth. “It’s quicker out of the gate than our standard truck thanks to the direct drive engine,” said Baker. “And it’s so quiet. That’s taken getting used to, but our drivers like it.”

as well. “We get lots of compliments. They see the wrap on the truck, which promotes the fact that this is an electricpowered vehicle. They think it’s pretty cool we’re running on battery power.”

Trucks Of The Past

In this edition of A Trucker’s Tale, Ed Miller rates the pros and cons of some trucks from over the years. Surely there are many among you who remember driving these trucks!

Pardon me as I (once again) diverge from the usual military theme, but writing about an Autocar tractor I drove in Vietnam got me thinking about some of the great older trucks we can now only view at truck shows, fairs, or on the internet.

Older drivers either have fond memories of the old trucks, or they still remember the embarrassment of having to drive them! Some of the old trucks, with which I am familiar, are the following:

Mack B61

One of the most wellknown Mack models, ever. Also, the first truck I drove on the highway. The B61 was so well built that many were still hauling freight when they had over a million miles on them.

Mack H Model

Regular H model had one large headlight on each fender. I’m pretty sure the H67 was the first Mack to have dual headlights. The leather boot, at the bottom of and surrounding the two stick-shifts, never stayed tight, and they became dried-out or torn. While traveling, air movement made it possible to breathe. When sitting still, or idling while in the bunk, the improperly functioning boot would damnednear choked a driver to death with the exhaust fumes getting into the cab.

Both B61 and H Models

Most drivers had installed small convex mirrors on top of their truck’s rightside mirror. The mirrors

were angled upward, which would allow the driver to observe (when the truck was “running right”) the blue flame of the fire coming out of the smokestack. Sure as hell, that’s a sight we don’t get to see these days.

Mack F Model

To me the F model was the ugliest tractor Mack ever built. Not a single one of Obie’s drivers wanted to drive the one he had owned for a short time.

White 7400 Series

The widest truck I ever drove. Also, every trucker I’ve ever spoken with concerning the 7400 agreed that the single stick of the Roadranger transmission developed an excessive amount of play after several hundred thousand miles. When changing gears, a driver would have to move the stick around until he found the gear he was looking for. When I was 18, I had just made a furniture pick-up in Shelby, NC. Heading out of Shelby toward my next pick-

up, I had just “found” 10th gear and was probably going too fast for the two-lane road. As I rounded a long curve, two police were waving trucks over for inspection. When the one (who was going to wave me in) saw how fast I was going, he stepped off the roadway and motioned for me to keep on trucking. Whew, another close one!

International Emeryville

I have very fond memories of this Cornbinder. One of Obie’s Emeryville’s had a 220 Cummins engine. Now I’m not very engine savvy, but I remember being told that the engine had a “backdraft manifold.” Whatever it did have, the truck emitted a sound you could not get enough of. The perfect sound was when the engine was lugging, especially while traveling heavily loaded up a long, moderate incline. In the hills of Western NC, this engine could be heard for miles, and there was no mistaking the fact that the engine was a 220 Cummins. Additionally, this sound somewhat resembled the deep, guttural pup-puppup-pup exhaust sound made by an older John Deere farm tractor.

Ford 9000

What can you say? Ford has always made good pickup trucks. Did not make a very good tractor. I think Ford tried to outdo the ugly F model Mack with this one.

GMC Cracker box

Anyone who has ever driven one of these, after McLean Trucking woreit-out, remembers several things about the tractor. The dog box was hotter than hell; the exhaust fumes coming in the cab were just as strong as what came out of the stack; and after driving it for 10 hours, the ringing in your ears after listening to the screaming Detroit Diesel 318. Most everyone I ever spoke with about the Cracker boxes told me they were embarrassed as hell to drive them. I certainly do agree with that assessment.

The slow, loud, and hot trucks used through the years have led to powerful, ultraquiet, high-tech, and highly efficient trucks on the road today. After remembering the aforementioned trucks, I continued thinking of the many tractor makes and models we oldsters drove. I hope these trucks bring back as many memories for you as they did for me. (I don’t just suggest good memories, since some of them were aggravating sons-of-bitches to drive.)

I apologize for my exclusion of the fine past models of Peterbilts and Kenworths, but I am not familiar enough with them to even attempt to include them.

As you now drive a new, modern tractor-trailer through Baltimore’s Ft. McHenry Tunnel, you can

leave your windows open because the rig is just about as quiet as a pick-up truck. When you recalled driving some of the trucks I just listed, do you remember how loud they used to be? Many truckers thought a tractor’s worth could be measured by how much noise it made. Both the tractor tires and the trailer tires made so much noise, especially going through a tunnel, or a long underpass, that the racket hurt your ears. If the rig was carrying the maximum legal weight, the tire noise was always much greater than when carrying light loads. I’m pretty sure the quiet sounds of the new equipment are wonderful, although I’m not sure because I’m hard of hearing, mostly due to those wonderfully loud old trucks.

Before the Ft. McHenry Tunnel was built, I was traveling north through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel sometime after midnight, and one of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s policemen was walking the catwalk alongside the roadway. As I approached him, he evidently noticed that I was observing the speed limit, so he looked at me and gave me the sign to “hammer down” by rapidly winding his right arm roundand-round several times. My lumber load was causing the tires to really be singing, and I did notice the cop was wearing ear protection. Many years later, one of those cops, who had become a commercial vehicle inspection officer, told me that his hearing was bad because of all the loud tunnel noises, and that the diesel smoke inside the tunnel was so thick that his body and clothes were filthy at the end of each shift. I inquired about him working in the tunnel by asking him why he did it for so long. He thought about it a few seconds and replied with a question of his own, “Why are you a damned trucker?” I told him I enjoyed being a trucker. He looked at me and said, “Well, I enjoyed it, and that’s why I did it!” SP

Kittle’s makes between 300 and 400 customer deliveries each week, according to Baker. Drivers shrink-wrap their loads each morning for protection, then make between 10- and 15 deliveries per day. Many deliveries are “white glove,” where Kittle’s drivers set up furniture in the customer’s home. More than 50% of deliveries are from orders placed at the company’s 132,000-squarefoot superstore in Castleton, “but we go all over the state,” said Baker.

About once a week, trucks deliver new ‘display’ furniture to its retail locations, but the core transportation is to residential addresses. “We pride ourselves on quick turnaround – our deliveries typically take place within two days of the order from one of our stores,” said Baker. “And we do customer surveys to track customer satisfaction with the delivery and setup. Our latest rating was 4.87 out of 5. A key to that is uptime of the vehicles – making sure furniture arrives on time and we don’t keep a customer waiting. Since the trucks operate Tuesday through Saturday, PacLease comes

to our distribution center on Mondays with mobile maintenance to ensure our trucks are in great working order. We pride ourselves on never missing a delivery.”

As the former national Retailer of the Year, as named by Furniture Today magazine, Kittle’s Furniture also recently launched the area’s first furniture recycling program.

“This furthers our commitment to helping the environment and keeps furniture out of the landfill,” said Easter. “If a customer wants us to take away their old furniture, we will now do that for a nominal fee. We then take the furniture to our distribution center and sort through what has value as a second life, and what should be recycled due to heavy usage. We work with local non-profits who take the ‘second life’ furniture, and we have recyclers who can make useable material from the rest of the furniture that has served its useful life. It’s another area where we’re trying to make a difference.” SP

Mack Begins Production Of Mack MD Electric

Mack Trucks recently began production of its second battery-electric vehicle (BEV), the Mack MD Electric, and delivered units to several customers, who are using the truck in a variety of applications.

Mack delivered the Mack MD Electric to ABF Freight, DC Logistics, Mission Linen and Pronto Freight Ways to begin operations and testing.

Mack made the announcement at the NTEA – Work Truck Association’s Work Truck Week 2024, March 5-8, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

“We’re thrilled that the Mack MD Electric is in full production and that customers are beginning to take delivery of the trucks,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “We built on the success of the diesel-powered Mack MD Series to bring an electric vehicle to the medium-duty market to help customers meet their sustainability goals with the same Mack promise of durability and reliability.”

The MD Electric complements its diesel-powered MD Series sibling, but with zero tailpipe emissions to support the company’s and customers’ long-term sustainability goals. It was during Work Truck Week 2023 that Mack first introduced the MD Electric model to the industry. Now, a year later, orders are being taken and the Mack MD Electric is in full production at Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO), in Roanoke Valley, Virginia, where the diesel-powered MD Series is also assembled.

The MD Electric is the second electric vehicle introduced by Mack Trucks to the industry. The first was the Mack LR Electric, which went into production in December 2021. The Mack MD Electric is available like its

2013

diesel counterpart in Class 6 and Class 7 ratings. The Class 6 model has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 25,995 pounds, and the Class 7 model has a GVWR of 33,000 pounds. Both models are exempt from the 12 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET).

“We continuously evaluate opportunities to increase sustainable operations and improve efficiency while meeting the needs of our customers,” said Seth Runser, president of ABF. “Participating in this pilot is a great way to continue testing electric vehicles in our operational model and to advance our valued partnership with Mack. We have a longstanding relationship with Mack and have relied on their equipment for many years.”

ABF’s Mack MD Electric will operate in Oakland, California, and will do pickup and delivery at various customer locations. TEC Equipment in Oakland will service and support the Mack MD Electric for ABF.

“ABF has prioritized good stewardship of our resources for decades – a practice that also drives efficiency in our operations,” Runser said. “By operating responsibly, we’re able to meet the evolving needs of our customers and make it easier for them to do business, while simultaneously reducing waste and emissions.”

DC Logistics is operating their MD Electric in the Inland Empire, Los Angeles and Orange County, California. The company will be using the BEV for LTL applications hauling various types of cargo.

The MD Electric is the first electric medium-duty vehicle in DC Logistics’ fleet, though the company operates four heavy-duty BEVs. DC Logistics operates in Arizona, Oregon, California, Texas, Louisiana and Nevada. TEC Equipment in Fontana, California, will service and support the BEV.

“DC Logistics is committed to being compliant with all California laws, and other states in which we operate,” said Alfonso Montesinos, director of fleet operations for DC Logistics. “We chose Mack because we’ve ordered some internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered vehicles from them, and we are very pleased with their performance.”

Mission Linen is piloting the Mack MD Electric because it would like to be a sustainability leader in Northern California, said Ryan Severson, general manager of

Western Truck Centers, Mission Linen’s dealer. Western Truck Centers in Sacramento, Stockton and Turlock, California, will support Mission Linen.

The Mack MD Electric will be the first electric truck in Mission’s fleet. Mission’s MD Electric will operate in northern and southern California and will use the BEV to distribute uniforms and linens to its customers.

“Mission Linen has a strong relationship with Western Truck Centers and Mack Trucks,” Severson said. They participated in the pilot because they wanted to determine if it was a good fit for their business. “The Mack MD Electric is pound for pound the best in the medium-duty EV industry and the most adaptive.”

Pronto Freightways is committed to ecological balance, which is why the company decided to test the Mack MD Electric, said Paul Wozniak, president and CEO of Pronto.

The MD Electric will be operating in Wayne and Oakland counties in Michigan and will be conducting pickup and delivery of palletized cargo dock to dock within a 60-mile radius. The MD Electric is the first electric vehicle in Pronto’s fleet.

“We were given the opportunity to participate in the program, and we jumped on it,” Wozniak said. “Mack’s warranty, dependability and service made it a simple decision for us to test the MD Electric vehicle in our operations.”

Pronto Freight Ways has 25 diesel-powered Mack MD Series vehicles in its fleet and 25 heavy-duty vehicles in its fleet, all of which are Mack. Interstate Truck Source in Romulus, Michigan, will ser-

vice and support Pronto’s MD Electric.

The MD Electric’s threephase Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor and all on-board accessories are powered by Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Oxide lithium-ion batteries, either in a 150kWh or 240kWH configuration. The MD Electric can be charged through AC or DC charging units. The regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the multiple stops the vehicle makes each day.

Developed specifically for medium-duty applications, the Mack MD Electric is built with the same focus on reliability, durability and productivity customers have come to expect from a Mack truck. Designed with the heavy-duty quality of its diesel-powered counterparts, the MD Electric is available in 4x2 configurations featuring a sharp wheel cut for enhanced maneuverability in tight urban settings. The MD Series cab design features a short bumper-toback-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 103 inches, an industry best. Similar to the diesel-powered Mack MD Series, Mack matched the bold look and styling of the Mack Anthem, Mack’s highway model, as a basis for the MD Electric grille and hood design. The Mack MD Electric will be supported by Mack dealers, many of which are already Mack Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) dealers. The MD Electric will meet the needs of trucking applications requiring dry van/ refrigerated, stake/flatbed and dump vocations. Nine Essential Tips For A Great ADT Operator

An efficient articulated hauler operator combines technical expertise, safety and situational awareness with effective communication and a commitment to productivity.

Scottish ADT manufacturer Rokbak explains how to master the art of being a successful and trusted articulated hauler operator.

Get ready to move

Take control of the hauler and your daily work before the ignition has been switched on by making sure you know the truck. It’s important to have a thorough understanding of the truck’s controls, capabilities and limitations. This includes knowing how to operate it efficiently and safely in various conditions, such as on gradients, rough terrain or in adverse weather.

Check things over

At the start of the working day, prestart checks are essential. A diligent operator conducts routine truck inspections to make sure the truck is ready for work. You should

check for pre-existing damage including identifying leaks and loose parts, the tire conditions, lights and beacons are fully operational, full visibility through the windows and fluid and battery levels daily. Rokbak trucks have ground level test points and a fully tilting cab for quick, easy access when servicing. A thorough equipment walkaround before starting a shift can make a big difference, and it doesn’t require a lot of time.

Know your limits

Before you start working, learn your worksite boundaries such as speed, ground bearing weight limits, travel direction, passing areas, width and height restrictions and no-go areas. Know your hauler’s capacity and ensure you are aware of your truck’s working limits with regard to payload. Furthermore, keep

an eye on how many buckets the loader is dumping in the truck to stay within the safe operating limits of the ADT and avoid accelerated component wear through overloading. Rokbak provides an optional onboard payload system and exterior payload lights, which indicate to both the truck and loader operators whether the payload is on target or overloaded. This information is recorded and transmitted via the Haul Track telematics system.

Safe operation

Follow all site operating procedures when driving the truck. Keep under speed and under control on gradients and check grade guides for safe and controlled descent speed. Correctly use differential locks – you’ll want to employ them when you’re operating in soft or slippery ground conditions to maintain traction and control. Be aware of what equipment is on your haul route and what sort of traffic you can expect to encounter.

Correct usage

The Rokbak RA30 and RA40 articulated haulers have fully enclosed multi-

disc brakes on all six wheels plus a retarder to deliver safe, consistent performance. Understanding the correct use of the retarder can prolong the life of the service brakes and reduce maintenance intervals for lower total cost of ownership (TCO). If required, make use of the transmission lock in range or manual shift modes to maintain a steady ascent or descent on gradients.

Stay alert

A good ADT operator stays alert to their surroundings, including other workers, vehicles and obstacles on site. They anticipate potential hazards and adapt their driving accordingly to maintain safety for themselves and others. Inevitably there will be challenges, such as navigating tight spaces. An alert operator can quickly assess situations, make informed decisions and take appropriate action to resolve issues while minimizing downtime. Never operate an articulated hauler if feeling fatigued or unwell.

Keep an eye on targets

Operating an articulated hauler requires attention to detail to ensure proper loading, unloading and maneu-

vering of materials. While an integrated payload system can account for the number of loads moved, manually recording progress in relation to a target keeps productivity proceeding on schedule. For improved fuel efficiency, minimise heavy acceleration and aim to reduce unnecessary idle time whenever feasible.

Don’t ignore fault codes

Critical information is delivered whenever system fault codes are triggered. If a Rokbak truck does develop a fault, the operator will receive a warning symbol on the dashboard. Faults should be reported when they occur as continuing operating could exacerbate the issue. Following the truck’s advice means increasing uptime by avoiding potential disruptions, and

effective communication with site supervisors, co-workers and other equipment operators is crucial for coordinating tasks and ensuring smooth operations.

And in the end…

At the end of a shift, follow the correct shutdown procedure. Allowing the truck to idle for a brief period at the end of a long workday enables the coolant to circulate through the engine. This helps to gradually lower the temperature, preventing potential damage from frequent ‘hot shutdowns’ over time. Adhering to the correct maintenance and start-up and shutdown procedures will help to keep operation costs low. SP
