Band Of Brothers On The Bayou The Martinez brothers continue their father’s proud legacy. About an hour’s drive south of Shreveport, Zwolle is the unofficial capital of Louisiana logging. “Our area is synonymous with logging,” says Jeffrey Martinez. “A lot of good logging families call Zwolle home. You know how they say the S.E.C. [Southeastern Conference] is the best conference in college football? I believe we have the best group of loggers in the South.” A famous sports figure once said that it ain’t bragging if you can back it up. And the Martinez family can back it up. Jeffrey’s father, A.T. Martinez, was the first recipient of the Louisiana Outstanding Logger Award in 1987. His three sons have won the award, too: Mark, owner of Timber-Mark Inc. in Noble, in 2009; Jeffrey, owner of TJM Inc. in Zwolle, in 2012; and Kevin, owner of K L M Logging Inc. in Noble, in 2016. Not that the Martinez brothers are ones to brag. Jeffrey is very humble about the award, which is presented by the Louisiana Logging Council in recognition of best practices for job quality and safety. “The year after I won, I judged the following year’s nominees and was very impressed by the winner. I would have finished second that year for sure.” Jeffrey and his brothers could not have achieved the success they have had without the support of their father, who passed away in 2010. “He always set a good example for us,” says Kevin. “He did whatever it took to make it, working from dawn to dark, or past dark.” “I wish other people could have had the opportunity to work with him,” says Jeffrey. “We always hear from past acquaintances and employees about the advice he gave them and his personal touch. And we owe a lot to our mother, too. Any successful businessperson must have people behind them, and she also set a great example. Our parents
instilled in us the values that we needed to become successful.” Jeffrey’s mother couldn’t be prouder. “I think my boys are the best,” says Nanette. “Then again, they had a really good teacher. I know A.T. expected the best.” Louisiana Logger’s Legacy A.T. Martinez drove a truck for his father’s logging operation in the late 1960s. “Back then everything was hand-felled, and they used tractors to skid logs and forklifts to load trailers,” recalls Jeffrey. “My grandfather was a pole expert. He used to love to mark transmission poles ahead of the logging crews, something the Martinez crews like to do today.” In 1972, A.T. started his own logging company, Martinez Brothers, with his brother, G.J. “He began taking us out to the woods at a young age,” recalls Kevin. “My first jobs were to clean and grease the log trucks and to fix flats. Later I learned to stack logs with the log loader. We literally grew up in the woods.” A.T. taught his boys the importance of hard work and self-reliance. “He taught us to do things like maintenance ourselves instead of depending on other people,” remembers Mark. “That was the best route because you have a lot fewer headaches. We learned to put in long hours and be very hands-on.” In 1980, A.T. went into business with his sons, Jeffrey and Mark, after they graduated from high school. “When I got out of high school, I was ready to go,” says Mark. “I never had any doubts this is what I wanted to do. My family works in the woods — it’s in our blood.” Kevin joined his dad and brothers in 1984. “I started driving skidder for my dad the day after I graduated,” he says. In the late ‘80s, the three sons branched off into their own operations with the backing of their father. “Dad helped Mark get a John Deere feller buncher, and he helped Kevin and I get our own Deere skid-
April 2018 ders,” recalls Jeffrey. “He told our local Deere dealer, “I stand behind these guys. I offer no money down — just my good name and assurance that they will pay you.” That bought us enough time to earn money for a down payment.” “I’ve been passionate about running a cutter since Dad got one in 1981,” adds Mark. “I just love cutting. To this day, it’s what I spend 90 percent of my time doing.” Although separate entities, the companies often worked together on the same operation, cutting the stumpage A.T. bought. “Timber buying is where my dad really made his mark,” says Jeffrey. “He always had enough timber to keep us busy. He stopped buying timber in 2008. But because of the training we got from him in terms of merchandising and maximizing the value of timber, we were able to align ourselves with other customers.” Over the years the three companies grew more independent, though they still have opportunities to work together once in a while. Jeffrey and Kevin both began contracting with Walsh Timber Company in 1998. They mostly clear-cut pine and hardwood for pulp, lumber, plywood, and ties. “We actually had an opportunity to log the same tract last year,” says Jeffrey. “It was enjoyable — a throwback to the old days when we were logging for Dad. But we still help each other all the time. If one of us is shorthanded or someone is taking a vacation, we’ll move employees or equipment around to fill the void. And at family gettogethers, we always pick each other’s brains. That’s one thing that Dad said before he passed — how proud he was just seeing his sons get along.” “We have a close family,” adds Kevin. “We work together. That’s what my father instilled in us — to help each other. And that’s something I will remember forever — when all of us boys were working together for my dad.” Keeping The Wheels Rolling A.T. was a John Deere man since day one. His first skidder was a Deere 640A Cable Skidder. Mark recalls running a Deere 440C Skidder when he was in Continued on page 7

high school. Both had open cabs. Today the three brothers, along with Mark’s son, Stephen, run John Deere L-Series Skidders. Stephen began working for his dad when he was about 20 years old. Unlike his dad, he really took to running a skidder. “That’s what I started on, and I never wanted to get off. You can really see everything that’s happening on the job, which helps me manage what’s going on.” Much about John Deere

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · Our Readers Are Your Buyers skidders has changed over the decades. Today’s machines are more comfortable and user friendly. “I love the joystick controls,” says Stephen. “They’re a lot smoother and more responsive. The cab is a lot more spacious than past models, and with the rotating seat, you’re not straining your neck as much. At the end of the day you feel the same as when you got into the machine. You are not feeling beat down.” Stephen believes the latest skidders are more productive and reliable than ever. “They’re so powerful. It hardly feels like anything is behind you when you make a drag. And they’re stout. I’ve had the skidder for over a year and haven’t had to do anything aside from regular maintenance. Uptime means more than anything to me.” “As my son or any of my brothers will tell you, it’s all about getting things done in a timely manner,” says Mark. “John Deere machines are productive and reliable, but the product support we receive from our local dealer, Doggett, is what really sets Deere apart. Whether it’s keeping us on top of regu-
lar maintenance or providing the parts we need, they help keep the wheels rolling.” Stephen and Kevin also run 843L Feller Bunchers. “They’re very comfortable and productive,” says Kevin. “I’ve never seen hydraulics work this fast. That makes a world of difference in the hilly terrain we work in. And all L-Series machines are so easy to work on. Everything is wide open and easy to get to.” Over the years, the Martinez family has tried other brands but have remained extremely loyal to John Deere. “It’s hard to change when we’ve had such good luck with them over the years,” says Mark. “Like Dad, we believe in John Deere.” Stephen was too young to know his grandfather, A.T. But his father, Mark, taught him the same lessons about hard work that A.T. taught his three sons. “The biggest thing Dad told me is just to work hard and to treat people right,” says Stephen. “If anyone needs help, give them a hand.” Mark lent a hand when his son went on his own to form Timbersam LLC
in Shreveport four years ago, after he had worked for his dad for eight years. “He supported me 100 percent,” Stephen recalls. “I already had a skidder, so I rented a feller buncher from him and bought my own loader. But the best assets he gave me were his two best employees. I’ve really learned a lot from them.” All of Stephen’s employees are over 50 years old. “I’m in my early 30s, and it’s getting tough to find anyone my age or younger to work in the woods anymore. Most want to work in the oil fields. I hope that changes, because someday I’ll need someone. Maybe I’ll have to wait for my two
Page 7
boys to grow up (laughs).” Despite the difficulty of finding future loggers, the Martinezes are cautiously optimistic about logging’s future. “If you are willing to put in the time and be hands-on, you can make a good living,” says Mark.
“But you have to be dedicated. It’s a hard living, but it’s an honest one. I’m really proud to provide for my family and of the reputation that the Martinez name has established.” b Source: John Deere

Matching New Production Capability With Sennebogen 830 M-T Log Loader The re-opening of the sawmill in White River, Ontario, was one of the lumber industries rare “good news” stories of 2013. Shuttered six years earlier, the town’s population had dwindled to nearly half its size from the 1990s. Then numbering about 600 residents, the Township of White River and the nearby Pic Mobert First Nation joined forces to create White River Forest Products LP (WRFP). Led by CEO Frank Dottori, the renowned founder of Canadian forestry giant Tembec, the new venture
invested heavily in restoring the site and creating a new model of efficiency in Ontario’s north. The centerpiece of the new mill is the new saw line and the infeed deck with the new debarker. Equipped with 14 scanners to achieve dramatic improvements in the mill’s yield from every tree, the new saw line can out-produce all three of White River’s previous lines put together. The next challenge was to match that efficiency in the yard’s loading capability. For that task, WRFP has turned to Sen-
nebogen 830 M-T purposebuilt material handlers. Robert Acs, the Yard Manager at WRFP, recalls the effort to move wood as fast as the saw can process it. “We acquired some older equipment with the assets we purchased. We tried upgrading to another material handler but it only lasted six months. We could see it wasn’t working out.” Getting up to speed In the meantime, the yard contracted out a loading by-the-hour service with Dan Bolduc of DKR Trucking. Bolduc was op-
erating an 830 M-T, specially designed by Sennebogen to pull a large trailer. The 830 took on the yard’s full range of loading duties: offloading trucks, stockpiling the wood, forwarding logs to the mill on a trailer and loading the infeed from the trailer. With a front row view of how Bolduc’s machine did it all, Dottori and the WRFP board soon approved the purchase of another unit from Strongco, the Sennebogen distributor located in Sudbury, Ontario. Strongco’s Danny Virgoe explained how the 830 M-T adds to the success of the mill. “White River, located in North Ontario deals with cold and harsh weather conditions. Some equipment just isn’t designed for extreme conditions like this. And this part of the world is no place to be looking for repair parts in a

hurry!” “Uptime is critical!” Acs agrees. “It’s a full day for the bus to deliver in-stock parts from the Strongco branch in Thunder Bay. A week is pretty good if we need anything from the factory. But these are low maintenance machines. They work 20 hours a day, 5 days a week. We’ve put 13,000 hours on our machine in two and a half years; Dan has 17,000 hours on his 830 – but we haven’t had any major downtime with the machine!” On the move Surviving the cold of White River winters is just one of the challenges to the Sennebogen machines. Wicked freeze and thaw cycles in the spring leave the yard in a slippery, boggy condition: tough sledding when you’re pulling a big load. Forwarding from the stockpiles to the deck can be a trip of up to 700 yards. The undercarriage’s higher clearance is uniquely designed for the job, with dual transmissions to drive each axle and with a frame specially reinforced against pulling stresses. Sennebogen’s elevating Maxcab provides operators with the visibility to keep the site safe while unloading and stacking. The cab’s sliding door and catwalk allows safe entry and exit, especially when the yard is filled with snow and ice. Acs notes that the high lift of the material handler further reduces any potential delays in forwarding cycles. “We can stack more wood closer to the mill, so that saves travel time.” With the upgraded saw line, White River can produce up to 40,000 board feet per hour. Processing black spruce and jack pine logs from 4” to 20” in diameter, its chip volume has
been reduced by half. The mill now yields more lumber from each tree. At full capacity, it targets 150 million board feet of FSC-certified products, with about 70% in 16’ lengths of 2 X 4 and 2 X 6. The return of the mill has led to a rapid resurgence of the town. With 160 employees at the mill, White River is seeing the return of experienced workers like Robert Acs. The town’s population has risen again to more than 1000, and its most pressing problem these days is housing its new residents. With the 830 M-Ts in the yard, Acs is keeping up with the saw line. The mill is keeping up with today’s most advanced technology. And now, happily, the town is working to keep up with the mill! b Source: Sennebogen

Construction Workforce Pressures Increase Across Canada As Activity Levels Off Canada’s construction industry must remain focused on recruitment and retention as more than one quarter of a million construction workers are expected to retire this decade, according to the latest labour market forecast released today by BuildForce Canada. While slow and uneven construction job growth is anticipated this decade as construction activity levels off, the notable provincial exceptions are BC’s Lower Mainland and Ontario’s Central and Eastern regions, where rising project demands have outpaced the available local workforce. “Despite slower employment growth in most provinces, recruitment pressures will intensify with the estimated retirement of up to 21 percent of Canada’s construction workforce this decade,” said Bill Ferreira, Executive Director of BuildForce Canada. “Simply put, the industry must remain fo-
cused on recruitment, training, and mentoring efforts to prevent a potential skills and capacity gap over the next 10 years.” BuildForce Canada’s 2018–2027 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward forecast shows construction activity is expected to soften in most provincial markets due to the aging population and weaker demand for Canadian natural resources. Despite this trend, the workforce is estimated to rise by approximately 22,000 workers by the end of the decade, as modest gains in non-residential job growth outpace small declines in residential construction. Public infrastructure modernization and growing demand for residential renovation and heavy industrial maintenance activity should help sustain industry employment over the decade. Productivity Failings Blamed For Project Delays According to research by the McKinsey Global Institute, an astonishing 98% of large-scale schemes around the world run 80% over budget and almost two years behind schedule. Poor communication, a lack of skilled workers and a failure to adapt to modern technologies are all
acting as a drag on productivity. Thankfully the industry could now be on the cusp of radical improvements in performance. Digital technologies, such as on-board telematics, have been improving the way construction site managers access and analyze machine data, and
how many construction companies are catching on to the fact that drones can also play a role in monitoring progress and spotting delays before they happen. Drones Take Site Analysis To New Heights the most superior drones on the market offer 3D mapping and land surveying, with a flight time of 30 minutes and a 7 km control range. While analysts believe the drone industry will top $5 billion in the next

two years, it’s still early days with only one in 10 construction companies currently using this new technology. Among the early adopters bucking the trend is John Bird, Managing Director of Yarrows Aggregates. He was one of the first in the UK to start using Volvo Construction Equipment’s On-Board Weighing system and has recently set up drone technology to assess his 125acre site. Every month, a drone flies over a predetermined route and automatically captures measurements of volume, pile count and tonnage within just a few hours. He said: “I’m always willing to invest in new ways to work more efficiently and drone technology like this allows me to access data far more quickly and accurately than I would ever be able to gather manually. We move a lot of material, so it’s vital I see an up to date record of what’s currently available so that I can plan and respond before we run out of any product. When you couple this with technology like On-
April 2018
Board Weighing we can ensure our machines are working to their optimum capacity. Construction start-ups are quick to recognize this growth in new technologies. Automation firm Doxel has developed a system where robots visually monitor every aspect of labor productivity and then use algorithms to relay progress in terms of timings, budgets and project’s targets. The company says it can increase productivity by 38%, but whether humans will welcome this robotic advice is open to question. Advances In Workforce Management New techniques are now available that promise to make the most out of construction workers’ individual behaviors and routines. In the UK, the academic Dr. Laura Florez has devised a productivity-busting algorithm that works out where best to place workers on site dependent on their personalities and skillsets. The academic’s system means that even with a diverse and everchanging workforce on site, the time-consuming
task of manually monitoring staff and site dynamics can be worked out more speedily. Better training and increased investment will also provide a productivity boost. The UK government has recently pledged to invest an extra £64 million into digital and construction skills. But even if training is given a boost, how can companies keep workers from leaving for more lucrative job roles? According to the ADP Research Institute, construction wages increased by just 2.3% across the industry in the USA last year, well below the national average. This is due in part to the fact that any increase in wages will eat into a project’s already stretched financials. Whether automation, government policies or improved workforce dynamics will be the answer to construction’s productivity issues remains to be seen. What is known is that these methods can go a long way in reducing lengthy delays. b Source: Volvo

Electrifying Opportunity For The Automotive Industry The automotive industry is facing a transition, where electric vehicles are predicted to take a major market share. “It will definitely happen, but not overnight,” says Sandvik’s Eduardo Debone, who argues that the rise of electric and, more importantly, hybrid technology represents a huge opportunity for sup-
pliers to the automotive industry. Earlier in 2017, the global financial services firm Morgan Stanley predicted that there will be 1 billion electric vehicles on the roads by 2050, with a market share that will grow steadily from around 2020. The report suggested that electric vehicles would ac-

count for 16 percent of car sales by 2030, and would become market leading with up to a 69 percent share by 2050. This growth will primarily be driven by government legislation, with more countries incentivizing the use of future technologies such as electric vehicles. These moves have become more widespread since the 2015 Paris Agreement, which seeks to “pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.” Clear statement of intent In 2016, the German Bundesrat (Federal Council) passed a resolution to ban new gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles from EU roads, starting in 2030. Only zero-emission vehicles would be allowed on the market after that time. The resolution is a clear statement of intent, even though it is non-binding and subject to approval by the European Council. In July 2017, Emmanuel Macron’s new French government announced its own plans to ban all gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040 in line with the Paris Agreement. The French
statement came the day after Volvo announced that it would make only fully electric or hybrid cars from 2019 onwards. In the meantime, governments of countries ranging from China, India and Japan, to the Netherlands and Norway, have announced similar plans. For suppliers to the conventional automotive industry, such as Sandvik, this trend would decrease the demand for products and services connected to internal combustion engines (ICEs). However, Eduardo Debone, Automotive Business Segment Manager at product area Sandvik Coromant, says this outlook could in fact be positive. Every week I meet people who ask if electric cars are a threat to our businesses, and I reply that in the short to medium term these new platforms actually represent an opportunity for Sandvik,” he comments. Sandvik is carrying out an indepth analysis of the effects of electrification, and the findings confirm that electrification will create significant new opportunities in the coming
April 2018
years. “Right now, there’s lower-hanging fruit in the form of the hybrid vehicles, which have huge potential to deliver CO2savings without requiring a total paradigm shift in terms of technology and infrastructure,” Debone says. Although electric vehicles are undoubtedly on the rise, some obstacles still need to be overcome before traditional cars have been outmaneuvered. Price is still a concern for many consumers, they take time to charge – around 30 minutes – and the drive range varies. Also, today’s power grid lacks the capacity to support a mass market for electric cars. “Norway is one of the most developed markets in the world for electric vehicles, and with a stable power grid supporting only 5 million inhabitants it makes sense,” says Debone. “In cities like São Paulo or New Delhi, both with some 20 million people in the metropolitan area, where the power grids are barely able to support the day-to-day needs of their populations, it’s a different challenge.” A bright future
For the next five to ten years, Debone believes that the growing trend of hybrid cars will enable automotive suppliers to continue to deliver the parts, technologies and components they currently make, in addition to some new ones. “Hybrids require the same components as ICE vehicles, plus some new parts to support the hybrid technology,” he says. As for Sandvik, an electrified future is a bright future. “When pure electric cars do become reality on a larger scale, we will have a mature offering for many areas, such as digital manufacturing, additive manufacturing and others,” Debone says. For now, we still don’t have a unique alternative to fossil fuels “Ultimately, I think the long-term solution may include fuel cell technologies, as a complement to batteries and internal combustion engines,” he says. “Before then, the technologies need to mature. For now, we still don’t have a unique alternative to fossil fuels. b Source: Sandvik

Powerscreen Welcomed Guests To Successful Events In Chile Powerscreen, one of the world leaders in the crushing and screening industry recently held a very successful two-day regional distributor forum and customer open event in Santiago, Chile. Held in conjunction with local distributor Komatsu Chile, based in Santiago, the manufacturer used the event to showcase its robust, reliable and highly efficient crushing and screening models to the Latin American market. Attendees were attracted from across Chile and the wider continent including guests from Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Colombia and Mexico. Speaking to the press at the event Dearbhaile Mulholland, Marketing Manager said, “We are very grateful to all attendees for spending time with us this week in Chile. This important event has allowed us to achieve our three key objectives: 1) To spend time with our customers here and really thank them for their loyalty. 2) To promote our 2017 new machine launches including the Warrior 1200 screen and four new crushers; Premiertrak 400X, Metrotrak, Trakpactor 550 and 1400 Maxtrak. 3) To better understand customer applications and requirements through our distributor forum and identify our regional “Strategy for Success”. Komatsu Chile has
been a leading force in mobile crushing and screening and this event underlines their commitment to our brand and their customer base. We congratulate them on an excellent first Powerscreen open day”. Felipe Ortega is the Powerscreen Brand Expert for Komatsu Chile, “it’s the first time we’ve done a Powerscreen open day and our expectations have already been surpassed. Many of our loyal customers already have Powerscreen equipment and the idea was to spend time with them and show them the new technologies featured on machines. Feedback from attendees on the working demonstrations and event overall was very positive and we look forward to making it a regular event”. International Sales Director for Powerscreen, Stephen McCartney indicated that the crushing and screening leader wants to further widen its reach in South America, “it’s fair to say there have been challenges in this region with recent economic instability. tinctive Peterbilt style. I am confident drivers will fully embrace this new home away from home.” The driver experience was the key factor in designing the new UltraLoft. By optimizing the space available, the new sleeper model includes industryleading storage and comfort. The UltraLoft gives drivers the largest upper and lower bunk mattresses, best-in-class headroom in both bunks and some creature comforts of home with space to accommodate the industry’s largest
microwave and enough room to fit a 32 inch flat screen TV. “Peterbilt’s customers have been asking for a product that maximizes the space available in the cab, and the UltraLoft delivers on that request. This makes it an ideal truck for team drivers, training scenarios and customers that want to maximize aerodynamic performance and driver comfort,” said Robert Woodall, Assistant General Manager – Sales and Marketing, Peterbilt Motors Company. “The first customers to see and test

the UltraLoft have provided overwhelming excitement and requested the first available production models.” The improvements are not limited to the driver experience. The UltraLoft provides an estimated 2-percent aerodynamic improvement to push the limits of efficiency even further while maintaining the styling and bold look of the Model 579. “Throughout the design process we asked ourselves, what is best for the drivers to be the most comfortable and productive? So, we add-
ed headroom, storage and improved the overall space to maximize the driver’s experience,” said Scott Newhouse, Chief Engineer, Peterbilt Motors Company. “The expansive loft style space, the increase in efficiency and the reduction in overall tractor weight are a testament to the team’s focus on maximizing the driver experience.” The 579 UltraLoft is available for order now and production scheduled to begin in the summer. b Source: Paccar

Keestrack Exhibits Continued Growth: Successful Strategy In International Markets Sustained expansion of the global sales and service network, substantial investments in the company’s own manufacturing capacity and continuous development of an increasingly diversified product range mean that the Belgian Keestrack Group is today one of the strongest growing providers of products on the international processing market. Today, Keestrack is represented across the world by a total 700 employees in five company-owned production and distribution centres as well as through 70 dealers and service partners in 52 countries, and is consistently expanding this position in key market regions (South America, Asia). The com-
pany’s results consequently exhibit a positive development: following an overall turnover of approx. EUR 85 million in 2016, the still family-owned Group, founded by current CEO Kees Hoogendoorn, is anticipating a sales performance of in excess of EUR 100 million in 2017, corresponding to an increase of at least 20 %. Besides intensive marketing efforts, a growing share of crushing plants in the overall sales volume is significantly responsible for this in the light of today’s 21 models in six product families of a very diverse range of screening and crushing technology machines. In the past few years in particular, the

Kenworth also celebrated significant Kenworth dealer anniversary milestones reached in 2017: 60 years – Inland Kenworth (Burnaby, British Columbia); 35 years – Edmonton Kenworth (Edmonton, Alberta) and Kenworth of Central Florida (Orlando, Florida); and 30 years – Motor Power Kenworth (Billings, Montana). Inland Kenworth joins Kenworth Sales Company and Rihm Kenworth as the only three Kenworth dealers with 60 or more years of service to Kenworth Truck Company. Kenworth now has more than 400 dealer locations in the United States and Canada. • Kenworth – Kenworth DOY – MHC Kenworth Colorado • Kenworth – Medium Duty DOY – MHC Kenworth – Kansas City • Kenworth – Kenworth PACCAR MX Engine DOY and Gold Award Kenworth Maska • Kenworth – Four Gold Awards – MHC Kenworth Dealers • Kenworth – Gold Award – Kenworth Montréal • Kenworth – Gold Award – Wisconsin Kenworth • Kenworth - Parts & Service DOY - MHC Kenworth - Oklahoma • Kenworth – Kenworth TRP All-Makes DOY Kenworth of Louisiana • Kenworth – Silver Award Winners. b
plumbing, and the community food bank. Outstanding efforts by dealers, such as MHC Kenworth – Kansas City, powered Kenworth to a record 9.3 percent medium duty market share in the United States and Canada in 2017. Kenworth Parts and Service Dealer of the Year MHC Kenworth – Oklahoma earned the Kenworth Parts and Service Dealer of the Year award by ranking near the top in every performance category, including parts and service excellence, Kenworth PremierCare Gold affiliations, facilities, parts purchases, call center acceptance, and customer satisfaction. The dealer embraced all the PACCAR Parts fleet services, retail and product programs, and recorded strong growth in all categories. Kenworth TRP AllMakes Dealer of the Year Kenworth of Louisiana significantly increased TRP sales by 38 percent and overall parts purchases by 18 percent in 2017 to help earn the Kenworth TRP All-Makes Dealer of the Year award. The award recognizes the Kenworth dealer that provides the best support for TRP parts and service. company has been investing sustainably in its own development and production capacity for jaw, impact and cone crushers comprising its programme of crushing technology for all major mineral and recycling sectors. With regard to the share of today’s crushing plants, Keestrack attributes approx. 50 % of its overall results to the sustained higher value creation potential of its mobile crushing units, which are technologically more sophisticated than conventional screening machines. Following a total investment of EUR 2.3 million, a new 7000 m² manufacturing hall will commence operations at Keestrack’s Czech production plant in Sternberk in February 2018. The central site will then occupy on a total area of 5 hectares a manufacturing and stock floor space of nearly 28.000 m². Sternberk produces all Keestrack screener ranges as well as track-mounted impact crusher units and supplies key components for jaw and cone crusher production in Ponzano, Italy, and the Chuzhou production and service site in China, which supplies mobile Keestrack screening technology for the Southeast
Asian market. While outstanding mobility has long been a kind of brand essence for Keestrack’s technology thanks to compact transportation dimensions and optimised operating weights even in higher performance classes, the company’s hybriddrive machines, now part of the offering for a couple of years, have also been gaining in popularity across all screening and crushing product ranges. Today, Keestrack is receiving orders for at least 30 % of all units in the form of diesel electric units, some with full electric plug-in option. The share of hybrid-drive plants within the heavy-duty crusher series has actually even risen to 90 %. Full flexibility thanks to on-board diesel engines means the Keestrack hybrid

machines offer considerable savings in total operating costs: Keestrack lists the key advantages of highly efficient electric drives as: lower maintenance costs, higher levels of availability, longer service life, better environmental compatibility and an immediate reduction of energy costs. Keestrack also promotes the increased networking of mobile plants equipped with intelligent control technologies. On the basis of real-time data, the satellite-based Keestracker GPS communications system can today facilitate location-based telemonitoring of machines currently in operation. Any occurring malfunctions are reported immediately, relevant performance data (hours of operation, consumption, crusher settings,
production rates etc.) are continuously recorded on an internet-based user portal, thereby contributing to the optimisation of machine performance and the operational maintenance organisation. Specialists at Keestrack’s Ponzano site in Italy are fully engaged in developing own portal solutions and interactive remote servicing tools, making even faster response times possible for operators and the service specialists involved. Extensively automated routines for diagnosis, maintenance and production analysis are designed to safeguard longterm optimum availability and profitability of processing units in quarrying or recycling operations. b Source: Keestrack

ager for innovation, Shell Lubricants. “The transportation industry is constantly changing, and our goal is to be at the forefront of innovation by collaborating with companies like AirFlow and others to develop creative solutions that provide benefits for years to come.” With new fuel economy regulations on the horizon and the need for continuing advances in fuel economy and emissions reductions, Shell Lubricants recognizes that a holistic approach to making fuel economy gains is important. This includes advances in engine and drive train technology, the use of low viscosity
synthetic lubricants, aerodynamic designs, efficient driving methods and more. The body of the Starship Project tractor is a bespoke aerodynamic design made of carbon fiber. This includes the side skirts, hood, and front end. A custom, Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved wrap-around windshield was designed specifically for the truck. The trailer includes energy efficient features such as full side skirts to reduce drag and a 5,000watt solar array on top of the trailer to power interior accessories and reduce the energy load. The Starship Project truck is powered by a 2017
Cummins X15 Efficiency 6-cylinder engine with 400 horsepower and 1850foot pounds of torque. The standard engine has been calibrated with the transmission to run at very low speeds and down to 800 rpm. Shell provided technical consultation on engine and drivetrain components, as well as recommendations for lubricant needs for use in the Starship Project truck. The engine will run on Shell Rotella® T6 Ultra 5W-30, which is a low viscosity API FA-4 engine oil that has been formulated to provide better fuel economy, improved high and low temperature perSHELL ROTELLA
hell and AirFlow Truck Company have designed and built a hyperfuel-efficient Class 8 truck capable of reducing the energy usage associated with the transportation of goods. This next-generation concept truck, called the Starship Project, uses technologies that are currently available today to minimize the amount of energy it takes to transport a load of cargo from one point to another. “We seek projects such as the Starship initiative to keep Shell at the leading edge of technology development and energy efficiency,” said Bob Mainwaring, technology man-

formance and meets the requirements for many low emissions engines. The Starship initiative provides Shell with an opportunity to test Shell Rotella® T6 Ultra 5W-30 in a cutting-edge vehicle prior to its introduction to market. Shell will be able to gain valuable information for creating lower viscosity engine oils without sacrificing performance. The truck will use a number of full synthetic Shell Lubricants products including Spirax S6 GXME 75W-80 transmission oil, Spirax S5 ADE 75W-80 differential oil and Spirax S6 GME 40 wheel hub oil. In addition, Shell Rotella Extended Life Coolant will provide excellent hightemperature protection and heat transfer. Shell Rotella Diesel Exhaust Fluid, a high purity diesel exhaust fluid, will also be in the truck. Starship Project Testing The Starship Project will undertake a cross-country run in May that will begin in California and end in Florida carrying a real load of cargo: clean reef material destined for a new reef installation off the coast of Florida later this summer. AirFlow and Shell will seek to reduce the energy usage associated with the transportation of goods through improved fuel-economy for a Class 8 truck and the measurement of freight ton efficiency. “For more than 30 years, Shell has employed co-engineering to increase efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Mainwaring. “The relationship with AirFlow Truck Company and other suppliers to build the Starship Project is part of a collaborative process led by Shell that encourages co-engineering and has resulted in a Class 8 truck that will be used to challenge how
trucking efficiency is defined.” Obtaining significant fuel economy improvements in Class 8 trucks and trailers is a challenging process given the size and construction of a tractor and trailer. Shell recognizes that a holistic approach to making advances is important. Advances in engine and drive train technology, the use of low viscosity synthetic lubricants, aerodynamic designs, and efficient driving methods all contribute to increased fuel economy and freight ton efficiency. AirFlow Truck Company AirFlow Truck Company has built two previous aerodynamic and fuel-efficient Class 8 tractor trailers, the first in 1983 and the most recent in 2012. The most recent rig, dubbed the Bullet Truck, ran coastto-coast hauling freight at 65,000 pounds gross vehicle weight and averaged a record 13.4 mpg. About Shell Lubricants The term ‘Shell Lubricants’ collectively refers to the companies of Royal Dutch Shell plc that are engaged in the lubricants business. New Case IH L10 Series Loaders The new L10 series premium loaders from Case IH deliver features that help make livestock feeding, material handling and other loader work more efficient and more productive every day. “These new loaders show how small changes can quickly add up to big advantages,” explains Denny Stroo, Case IH Farmall tractors and agriculture loaders marketing manager. “Whether you’re moving bales off the hay field, cleaning cattle pens or loading a mixer wagon, picking up a few seconds every step along the way lets you get more work done, easier.” Several design features help L10 series loaders achieve these advancements, including: • A new styling that provides better visibility • Efficient, flow-optimized hydraulics • Fast mount and dismount — 30 to 60 seconds
Stroo says. “Yet, with the L10 series, we’ve found ways to make our loaders even stronger.” A chamfered and embossed arm design increases strength and harmonizes perfectly with the modern lines of Case IH tractors. Cast and forged components add even more strength at critical stress points, helping to create lasting reliability and a lower cost of ownership. Plus, design features, such as smart hose routing and protective covers, help keep hydraulic lines out of the way. Arm styling provides easy access for routine tractor maintenance. Each of the six available models in the L10 series loader lineup is specifically designed for Case IH Farmall, Maxxum, Puma and Magnum tractors, so producers can choose the loader suited to the type of loader and lift capacities they need on their operation. A full range of attachments, from grapples to buckets to bale spears, help make L10 series loaders versatile for maximum productivity. b
• Unmatched durability for maximum uptime “If you’ve got hundreds of bales to move to storage, shaving off even a few seconds each time you lift the bale from the trailer and move it to the hay shed — because the hydraulics are faster or because you can see better and move more quickly — it’s easy to understand how the new L10 loaders can help you wrap up the job sooner and get on to the day’s next project,” Stroo says. More efficient oil flow with the L10 series loaders means the hydraulic system performs faster while generating less heat and using less fuel for lower operating costs. Best-in-class hydraulic couplers speed connect and disconnect times — the loader can be removed or put back on the tractor in a minute or less. “Case IH loaders have earned their reputation for rugged durability,” Source: Case-IH

• POWER BOOST WITH NO TIME LIMIT • DEDICATED HEAVY LIFT FUNCTION • HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION
DON’T SET LIMITS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO. Most excavators come with a power boost function that can deliver extra force when you need it most – but only for a few seconds at a time. What good does that do when you have a whole day’s work ahead of you? The power boost in KOBELCO excavators provides ~10% more bucket breakout force when you need it, for as long as you need it. They also offer a dedicated heavy lift function that provides ~10% more power when lifting and swinging. Combine that with our heavy-duty construction and you can be sure they’ll never back down from a challenge.
