Doubling Production With The Powerscreen Chieftain 2200 Powerscreen has been powering the industry since 1966 and is one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing and screening equipment. A new fleet of portable plants coupled with a key partner effectively doubles production for an Alabama producer. When Alabama Aggregates sought to double its production, the company searched for a solution that was reliable, responsive and dependable. Donny Raughton, president of Alabama Aggregates, owns a sand and gravel operation in Autaugaville, Alabama. After purchasing his first pit just last year, Raughton is now on his way to finalizing the purchase of his fourth. Alabama Aggregates’ operation is set up for rock recovery through the demanding process. The speciality rock being screened in L.A abrasion, which is known for both its strength and hardness.

says he found two things. First, he found the Chieftain 2200 tracked screening plant and its two doubledeck screen boxes produce 40 percent more than other screening plants he’d tried. Alabama Aggregates experienced a major increase in material on the ground, an added benefit for a company operating 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Alabama Aggregates currently has three Chieftain 2200 tracked screens on site along with a Chieftain 2100X tracked screen, a Warrior 2100 tracked scalping screen and a Chieftain 1700 three-deck screen. By running seven days per week, Raughton also realized minimal downtime is essential. “We found that the service provided to us from Powerscreen Crushing & Screening has enabled us to concentrate solely on increasing our production and not having to worry about downtime,” he says. “The immediate service and the availability of parts when needed has helped me tremendously in my operation” b

“We are shipping rock all over the country right now, from the Gulf Coast to the West Coast to the Northeast,” says Raughton, whose products are washed thoroughly before they’re shipped. “We are shipping by rail, by track and by barge. Demand is high right now, and we need to get it moving by whatever means necessary.” When Raughton launched his company, he had five employees, plus himself. Within the last year, he’s grown his workforce to almost 60 people. To help meet the growing demand for his product, Raughton aligned himself with Powerscreen Crushing & Screening, the Powerscreen equipment dealer headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, with branch locations in Birmingham, Alabama, and Nashville, Tennessee. Volvo Construction Equipment And LEGO Technic Team Up Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and LEGO Technic construction toys have joined creative forces with a team of children to design a futuristic, autonomous construction machine. The result: The LEGO Technic Volvo Con-

cept Wheel Loader ZEUX set, scheduled for release in toy stores in August 2018, and the digital prototype for a real-world autonomous machine. What started out as a fun, informal team building event to inspire The Volvo

CE and LEGO Technic design teams in 2016, gradually evolved into an idea for an actual LEGO Technic product. Their goal: Design the construction machines of the future. And now the collaboration has led to number of potentially revo-

lutionary patents. Arvid Rinaldo, (Brand Communication & Partnerships) at Volvo CE, explains why it is relevant for their designers to work on futuristic construction machines with LEGO Technic: “We have enjoyed a truly fun and productive collaboration with the LEGO Technic team over the past few years. It allowed us to test ideas for new types of construction machines for the future, both in terms of functionality, scale, design and interaction. This model may seem futuristic now, but autonomous, connected and electric construction machines are already starting to be a reality. The Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX is a realistic next step in the exciting evolution of our construction machines.” Speaking about the collaboration between the two Scandinavian brands, he adds: “We wanted to cooperate with a premium toy manufacturer, just as we are a premium player in the construction equipment sector. Volvo CE and the LEGO Group together create a perfect match, both culturally and in what

we try to achieve in our products – exploring together how we can build tomorrow” Autonomous lawnmowers and vacuum cleaners are already a familiar sight in homes around the world and are generally considered safe to be around. And as the first self-driving cars were tested on roads, the gear wheels were turning in the heads of designers at Volvo CE in Sweden and the LEGO® Group in Denmark, as they worked to find new ways to increase safety and bring a more human aspect to the artificial intelligence in big construction machines. A focus group consisting of children helped out in the process creating the ZEUX. Looking at early drawings and models, the group gave feedback that led to the development of new, unique features. Two main features that the group decided on were the scout drone and the adjustable “camera” boom mounted on the roof of the vehicle, called the Eye. In addition to the scout drones and built-in sensors a real-life model would have, the Eye illustrates a new and inventive feature: it will show exactly where the vehicle’s “attention” is directed, which means it can make “eye contact” with humans and acknowledge their presence. “When you cross a busy road, you watch out for dangers and try to make eye contact with drivers in your immediate vicinity. It’s an instinctive reaction that lets you evaluate your next move”, says Andrew Woodman,

Senior Design Manager for LEGO Group. “Should you stay where you are, or is it safe to move? It’s usually an easy assessment. With autonomous vehicles, you don’t have that interaction because you can’t see all the sensors that allow them to navigate around both stationary and moving objects. It’s not intuitive for us to decode what the vehicle’s next move is, where it’s going, or if it has seen us. While the Volvo Concept Wheel Loader ZEUX will not be driving on roads, it would be interacting with workers at a construction site. So we set out to create features and functions that make the interaction between humans and machines as safe and intuitive as possible.” One of the core LEGO Technic design values is the “AFC promise”, which stands for “Authenticity, Functionality and Challenging building”. Models have to look as close to their real-life counterparts as possible, be fun to play with, and inspire builders to try new building techniques. So how does a futuristic model fit into especially the Authenticity part of the promise? Workshops in Billund, Denmark, video meetings, and exchanges of concept sketches and sketch models allowed room to test wild ideas throughout the development process. As a result, you can see a lot of very interesting features like an extendable counterweight, raising and lowering chassis, 4-wheel steering and many other great Continued on page 8

Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. Knows Rototilt After more than a decade operating with Rototilts, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc knows Rototilt and its wide range of tools boost on-site efficiency and deliver a higher quality product for golf course owners and homeowners. “I really believe if you don’t have a Rototilt today, you’re going to need one to remain competitive.” Pete Stroeder, owner, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. “It would have been almost impossible to get my foot in the door (during a recession and in a new market) without the Rototilt. That’s what set me apart from every other operator looking for work. Once people saw it and saw what I could do with it, I was kept very busy, and every company I worked with instantly tried to copy what I was doing.” Pete Stroeder, owner, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. “I’ve never waited for the big guys to adopt new toys. In this business you have to be willing to take chances and test out new tools because, like the Rototilt, they can change your business in an amazing way.” Pete Stroeder, owner, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. “I bring to the table a lot of different attachments to my jobs. With the Rototilt, I’m always thinking about new ways to use it to save me time, be more effective and deliver a better product.” Pete Stroeder, owner, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. Since 2001, Pete Stroeder Contracting Inc. has taken on challenging projects to practically and efficiently turn a client’s vision into reality. The company brings leading-edge tools and technology with a highly experienced team capable of turning bush lots into the landscaped properties of a client’s dreams or shaping bunkers and fairways into awardwinning golf courses. • Versatility – One machine can do more; saving time and saving clients money • Changing attachments

is a breeze – Rototilt’s Hydraulic QuickChange connection lets the operator quickly and easily switch tools without leaving the cab • Endless Possibilities – With 360-degree rotation and 45-degree tilt, creativity is the only limit to what an operator can do with an excavator By the Numbers: • One machine running a Rototilt can get a job done 30% faster than an excavator with a wrist bucket • Changing attachments drops from 10 minutes with manual quick attach to five seconds with Rototilt’s Hydraulic QuickChange • With a wide range of attachments, a Rototilt lets operators use a single machine for 35% more tasks. After more than a decade and more than 22,000 hours running excavators equipped with a Rototilt®, one thing is certain: Pete Stroeder Contracting depends on Rototilt to deliver in his niche of tackling tough projects with creative ideas and strategies to turn vision into reality. “I’m not someone called in to just dig a hole. Almost anyone can move big dirt or dig a pond, my projects tend to be more specialized and require a little more thought or strategy to get the results the customer is looking for,” says owner Pete Stroeder. “I look at the whole project in a strategic way to try and anticipate potential problems, so we can address them in the beginning not down the road when the fix gets more expensive.” With two machines equipped with Rototilts, Stroeder says he can’t imagine working on landscaping, residential and golf course projects without an excavator equipped with a Rototilt. “I can approach a job from any angle. You’re not committed to working from a single direction like a regular excavator,” he says. “You don’t paint yourself into a corner when you’re

excavating, and you don’t drive over a finished product to get out of an area.” Taking Chances Stroeder saw his first Rototilt while he was living in Orangeville but never saw it operating. After moving to Kamloops to build Tobiano Golf Course in 2006, he was in the market for a new excavator to move from an 11-ton to a 20-ton machine. He decided the time was right for a Rototilt. “After I first saw it, I started thinking about what I could do with it and it expanded from there.” He bought a Volvo 210 from Great West Equipment and while they had no experience with Rototilt at that time, they made all the arrangements. Stroeder says he wasn’t worried about taking a chance on a new piece of technology. “I’ve never waited for the big guys to adopt new toys. In this business you have to be willing to take chances and test out new tools because, like the Rototilt, they can change your business in an amazing way.” Since that first Rototiltequipped excavator, Pete Stroeder Contracting has continued to regularly upgrade its fleet and its Rototilts, which he uses for all his landscaping and shaping projects. Today, the fleet includes a Case 235 with a Rototilt R6 and a Case 75 with Rototilt R3, as well as a Volvo 240 for land clearing, and a John Deere 323 Skid steer. Unleashing 3D Creativity When the Volvo 210 with a Rototilt RT60 was delivered to Kamloops’ Tobiano Golf Course, everything changed for Stroeder. After using a wrist for more than 10 years, the Rototilt took excavation and shaping from two dimensions to three dimensions, which was a game changer. Tobiano’s dramatic landscape made it a perfect testing ground for the Rototilt. With sharp ravines and major grade changes on every hole, Stroeder quickly realized that 360-degree

rotation with 45-degree tilt let him shape with precision and turn an architect’s ideas into a playable, award-winning course. “It made things that much easier and it took less effort to create the things we were trying to do like tying in greens to the bunker edges.” When putting in a bunker complex, Stroeder says a Rototilt-equipped excavator will shave 30 to 40% off the shaping time, which when you’re looking at the short golf course construction season, means you can get it completed faster. “You’ve got a narrow window to get things done so that 30% helps with time to completion and lets you fit more into windows of opportunity.” Making a Quick Change In the past, Stroeder relied on a manual quick coupler to change attachments but the Rototilt Hydraulic Quick Connection, called QuickChange™ makes using his wide range of attachments quick and easy. Where manual quick couplers could take up to 10 minutes to change over from one attachment to the next, he can move from

the G bucket to trenching bucket to clean up blade in five seconds. “Your hoe is more flexible, and one machine can be used for everything you need,” he says. “I bring to the table a lot of different attachments to my jobs. With the Rototilt, I’m always thinking about new ways to use it to save me time, be more effective and deliver a better product.” Designing a Difference “I’m known for having the tools to do the job,” says Stroeder who has bought or designed a wide range of tools including G buckets and tooth buckets, the 10foot blade, combination digging and finishing buckets, frost picks, and a universal quick coupler so that he can use all his skid steer attachments including a grapple bucket and forks. “Some of the ideas might sound crazy but the tools and options I can bring to a site thanks to the Rototilt have paid off and brought me more and more work. My entire business is built on word of mouth so it’s important to me when I leave a site, people can see a finished, high quality project.”

“You can take a wet site and make it look clean, you can take bony site and make it look level and smooth. It gives everything that spit polish, so your clients can see how their project will look when it’s finished,” he says. “You can hit any grade any angle, so you can come out of a ditch a swale through mud through anything and it is more advantageous than a 6-way blade on a dozer, and you don’t have to float in a bunch of different machines to do the same work.” He’s currently looking at a screening bucket to provide additional services when backfilling around trenches or homes, but that’s not the last tool he’ll add. As Stroeder realized 10 years ago, the possibilities with a Rototiltequipped excavator are endless. In Control Since 2006, Stroeder says the control systems on the Rototilts have continued to improve with more use-friendly features. From the original RT60 controls to prop plus and the new proportional controls on the R60 and R3 Continued on page 8

Kobelco And Manitowoc End OEM Supply Agreement

August 2018 and bringing to market reliable products which have a high standard of quality and safety. We look forward to a new chapter in growing our businesses globally.” Naraki added. Barry Pennypacker, President & Chief Executive Officer of Manitowoc said: “As a world leader in lattice-boom crawler cranes, Manitowoc provided our customers with a comprehensive line through our alliance with KCM. The company has been an excellent partner, providing our customers with a high standard of product quality and reliability. After nearly 15 years, we have agreed to pursue separate ways developing our own products in the smaller capacity cranes to serve our respective customers. With the implementation of The Manitowoc Way, we will continue to deliver new and innovative quality products, on time, ensuring that our customers continue to have the right product offerings” Pennypacker added. b

Kobelco Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (or KCM) of Tokyo, Japan, one of Japan’s largest manufacturers of construction equipment, and The Manitowoc Company, Inc. (NYSE: MTW), a leading global manufacturer of cranes and lifting solutions, will not renew their OEM supply agreement, under which KCM supplies Manitowocbranded lattice-boom crawler crane models with lift capacities under U.S. 150 tons to the worldwide Manitowoc distribution network, and Manitowoc supplies Kobelco -branded all-terrain crane models for marketing in Japan. The global alliance began in November 2003 and will end on November 9th, 2018. KCM will continue to support Manitowoc and its customers, and Manitowoc will continue to support KCM and its customers, with ser-

vice parts for a period of ten (10) years. With the market environment changing over the past few years, The Manitowoc Company and KCM Construction Machinery have been re-examining the agreement and discussing the future of their global alliance. Looking ahead at future market conditions, the companies have mutually decided to operate their businesses on their own. Kazuhide Naraki, President and CEO of KCM, said: “Manitowoc has an outstanding reputation around the world and offered a strong distribution network in regions it serves globally. I can say our partnership was very successful between two highly respected industry players joining forces.” “I strongly feel that both companies share the same approach – focusing on customers with care Source: Kobelco

them, you can’t live without them!” Staying Ahead of the Market In 2008 (and the global economic crisis), Pete Stroeder Contracting relocated from BC to the Ottawa area. He needed to make name for himself in this new area, but also in a new market because golf course construction had come to a halt and the recession meant work was scarce. “We walked into a new market and it just took a couple days for everyone around us to open their eyes to the possibilities.” “It would have been almost impossible to get my foot in the door (dur-

Once people saw it and saw what I could do with it, I was kept very busy, and every company I worked with instantly tried to copy what I was doing.” Eight years later, the contractors Stroeder worked with in those early days have added multiple Rototilts to their fleet. “I really believe it you don’t have a Rototilt today, you’re going to need one to remain competitive,” he says. b

Yanmar Launches New Autonomous Tractors Autonomous farm machines were once the subject of science fiction, but Yanmar has made them a reality with the introduction of its new 2-Series tractors scheduled to go on sale on October 1, 2018. Equipped with Yanmar’s innovative Information and Communications Technology (ICT) – which utilizes precision positioning data and robot technology – the new autonomous driving “Robot Tractors” are designed to greatly enhance farm management efficiency, while realizing significant labor-savings. Agricultural machinery equipped with the “SMARTPILOT” autonomous operating system will fortify Yanmar’s already impressive lineup of industrial farm machinery. In addition to the unmanned Robot Tractors that will help reduce the number of manual laborers required in the field,

Yanmar has introduced a lineup of Auto Tractors that deliver high-precision work with minimal human operation, all based on the company’s vast experience and deep knowledge in the farming field. Also, those who already own a YT tractor can upgrade their equipment with the auto robot functions. At the technological centre of the new Robot and Auto Tractors is Yanmar’s ICT, which was developed to address the various challenges that have faced the farming industry in recent years. This includes challenges such as the necessity of large-scale management of aggregated farm land (bigger farms need more management), as well as the twin challenges of an aging labor force and fewer young workers joining the work force. By supporting farm management with integrated control (au-

tomated recording) based on information from the sensor network, ICT promotes greater production and management efficiency. This in turn results in added value for agriculture and crops, in areas such as larger scale farming, increased crop quality, and augmented branding functions. By providing various services with ICT, Yanmar will continue to strive to improve efficiency and reduce the need for manual labor for its customers, as it continues to lead the way in advancing sustainable farming. Yanmar plans to sell more than 100 units annually for autonomous tractors. Two modes of autonomous operation In addition to advancing forward, “Auto Mode” allows the tractor to automatically drive in reverse, stop and execute turns. In “Linear Mode,” while certain

driving manoeuvres such as turning are performed by hand, the tractor can travel back and forth on its own when cultivating land. Switching between these two modes is possible in the 2-Series, allowing you to customize it for different operators, or according to skill of the individual and the work itself. Improved workability through intuitive operation and highlyaccurate positioning Operation and settings are controlled via a durable, dustproof and waterproof 10-in. tablet to assure and reliability in the often-harsh environment of farming. Also, it allows for one person to operate two tractors, as the tablet in the manned tractor can be used to operate the unmanned tractor sideby-side with the manned tractor, or even in reverse. Information is represented by icons or illustrations, making it possible for the user to easily perform tasks such as gauging the work area, creating driving routes and tracking where the machine has driven during operation. And, because the system is based on RTK-GNSS, which utilizes two signals from global navigation satellites (GNSS) and the base station, it can provide positioning information with pinpoint accuracy. In addition to the base stations established by JA and local governments, the user can utilize Yanmar’s own base station as well. Extensive safety equipment for peace of mind (Robot Tractor Only) Assuring safety for those in the proximity of the Robot Tractor, which is capable of unmanned driving and operation under the surveillance of an operator, are numerous sensors and safety lights. Also, the user can perform functions such as emergency stops on the control tablet. Upgradeable to automatic operation from existing YT tractors If you already own a YT tractor, you can add autonomous operation and robot specifications as a factory option. This allows you to acquire autonomous operation functionality and improve your work efficiency in a smooth, hassle-free fashion, without having to purchase a new tractor. With beginnings in Osa-

5 Safety Best Practices That Can Help It has been said, We are what we repeatedly do. Workers do not purposely disregard safety rules and warnings, but it is easy to get distracted, to become complacent, even with training. Technology aids are great, and product engineers work hard to design out hazards, but safety awareness is the greatest protection against accidents. Making safety a habit, every day, requires self-discipline. Know the hazards involved. Be disciplined about using the equipment correctly, and understanding and following all safety requirements, all the time. Following good safety practices protects not only equipment operators, but also everyone who works in their proximity, so they all can go home safely after their job is done. While operator safety is paramount, a safe jobsite

is also a more efficient and productive one: less downtime from accidents and fewer repair costs from improper machine usage and maintenance. The following five safety guidelines may seem basic, but they help ensure safe operating practices every day, says the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), which relays safety-trends information through its CONEXPOCON/AGG 365 initiative and extensive array of safety and training materials. 1. Follow your company’s safety program. Never operate machinery under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Be aware and alert to any potential hazards in your specific working condition. Participate in all required training. 2. Know important safety alerts and signal words posted in your work area Source: AEM

Vermeer Introduces New MUD Hub Slurry Solidification System The new Vermeer MUD Hub slurry solidification system helps control the costs, time and complexity of drilling fluid management. Using the new Vermeer ST2000 slat tank and the Surface to Surface (STS) FL-243 solidification mixer, the Vermeer MUD Hub helps create stackable material for convenient transfer and disposal. If you’re not sure of what a certain safety alert or signal means, ask a supervisor or safety professional. 3. Protect yourself. Wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Hard hats, gloves, safety glasses and boots may be required in order to operate machinery safely. 4. Know the rules. Most employers have rules governing equipment use and maintenance. Before you start work, check with your supervisor or safety coordinator and be sure about the rules you’ll be expected to obey. 5. Know the equipment. Make sure you understand the capabilities and hazards of the equipment you’ll be operating. Read the owner’s manuals, safety literature and any other resources made available to you. b

cm) variable speed conveyor, where it is then loaded into the 750-gallon (2,839.1 L) infeed hopper of the STS FL-243 solidification mixer. The STS FL-243 solidification mixer combines slurry from drilling fluid or hydroexcavation with a superabsorbent polymer before being discharged onto the ground or into a roll-off dumpster. In as little as 15 minutes, the slurry will begin to set up as a stackable material that is convenient to transport and may now be disposed of at a landfill, used as ground cover or added to composting mixes, depending on what additives were used in the drilling fluid. The MUD Hub can be operated by one person from multiple control station locations for jobsite flexibility, and feed and dosage rates are made from the STS FL-243 solidification mixer’s control center. The ST2000 slat tank has a self-cleaning tank design, as well as slipresistant floors. With integrated lift points and a convenient setup design, the MUD Hub is convenient to transport with minimal preparation to begin running on a jobsite. b

properly disposing of used drilling fluid and hydroexcavation spoils are on the rise because of higher fees, reduced number of facilities accepting drilling slurry and increased travel time for offloading vacuum excavators. “Fluid disposal can have a substantial impact on a project’s success,” Bates said. “At Vermeer, we are committed to producing cost-effective solutions for fluid management. In addition to the Vermeer line of reclaimers for larger-diameter pipeline work, we now have the MUD Hub for contractors doing utility work.” With the MUD Hub, vacuum excavator operators drive over the swing-open hatch above the 2,000-gal (7,570.8 L) ST2000 slat tank, designed for vacuum excavator dumping, to empty their tanks — no backing up to a pit required. A swing-open hatch helps to make the process more efficient and reduces excess splattering. The slurry mixture is then routed up the 84” (213.4 Source: Vermeer

Big Freight Celebrates 70th Anniversary By Preparing For More Growth Ahead Big Freight Systems Inc. this year celebrates the 70th anniversary of the founding of what has become one of North America’s leading freight management and transportation companies. The company doesn’t have any big celebrations to mark its special year. “We’re always looking ahead to see what we can do next,” says Gary Coleman, president and chief executive of the company his father co-founded in 1948. “We have plenty on our plate maintaining our record of excellence in operations.” Big Freight was recognized with the Truckload Carriers Association’s National Fleet Safety Award in 2016, for being North America’s safest fleet (under 25 million miles), and it received the 2017 Canadian Shippers’ Choice Award. The company is now preparing for growth opportunities, as part of the Daseke family of flatbed haulers, which it joined in 2017.

“Our existing clients are asking us to do more, and new clients challenge us to provide creative and profitable solutions for their shipping needs,” Coleman says. “We’ll be ready for both.” Big Freight currently operates a fleet of 150 trucks and 350 trailers, serving all of North America; it continues to invest in new trucks and trailers, including the recent addition of specialized vans for the power-sports industry. In addition to its own flatbedfreight hauling services, Big Freight offers logistics management, fleet maintenance, (through its FleetPro facility in Steinbach, Manitoba), and warehousing and distribution services to its customers. Its facilities include a 300,000-squarefoot storage warehouse in Winnipeg. Big Freight has developed specialty niches such as handling distribution for all major powersports-equipment manufacturers.

Big Freight was founded by Gary’s father (Red) and his grandfather in 1948. After selling the family farm in Steinbach, Manitoba, the Colemans purchased a four-truck operation called South East Transfer. Big Freight adopted its present name in 1996. Red Coleman, his son says, loved trucks. “He wanted to drive them, haul freight and fix them,” he says. He still does. While Red, now 92, has been out of the day-to-day running of the business for many years, “he still comes by the office on a weekly basis and wants to know what’s going on.” That enthusiasm has been passed on in the family. “I think his interest and keen desire to stay connected motivates me to push on,” Coleman says. “There’s a saying that you get diesel in your blood and it makes it hard to leave. After almost 40 years, I still get excited seeing one of our trucks, loaded and

running down the road. I genuinely still enjoy the work I do and since joining Daseke, that excitement has ramped up.” Big Freight’s success over 70 years has been a team effort, Coleman notes. “The people at Daseke are extremely smart, very hard working and completely supportive of what we’re doing in Canada,” he says. “I’ve been very fortunate to have an equally bright and dedicated team at Big Freight that understands our short- as well as longterm objectives.” One of those team members is Alan Bradley, a truck technician who has been with the company for more than 20 years. “I really like the people I work with and the people I work for,” he says. “They go about their business in a forward-thinking manner. They treat their drivers and their employees well.” Bradley’s son-in-law, Wesley Giesbrecht, heard enough good things about Big Freight to join the company two and a half years ago as a trailer technician. One indication of the for-

ward-thinking moves to recruit employees, he says: Big Freight paid for his apprenticeship training program. He expects the company will “keep going forward. We’ll see more great things with Daseke. We’ll be getting bigger and better.” Rod Miron, a 29-year veteran of the trucking industry who recently joined Big Freight as operations manager, says the company has been able to grow by developing new lines of business and maintaining a customer-service focus. “We don’t say no,” he says. “We look for valueadded solutions.” The ability to come up with those solutions will be enhanced, he added, as Big Freight works with other companies in the Daseke family, exchanging ideas about how to further the tradition of being customer-service driven. To keep its employees and trucks operating efficiently and safely, and to keep customers satisfied with top-quality service, Big Freight implemented a Continuous Improvement program in 2013, with mul-

tiple employees winning belts to signify completion of steps in their training. Coleman says the emphasis on continuous improvement has its rewards: in 2017, driver miles were up while accidents and claims were down. “Our company succeeds when all members of our team have the opportunity to excel and reach their highest potential in a work environment that reflects dignity, encouragement and respect,” Coleman says. “The Continuous Improvement program encourages everyone to participate, communicate and be recognized for their achievements.” Having a good team in place is especially important in the trucking industry’s current environment. “The driver shortage is more prevalent than it has ever been and this creates all sorts of opportunities for well-run companies. At the end of the day, he who has the driver, hauls the load. We plan on Big Freight being the one that has both.” b Source: Siefkes Petit

Case Provides Equipment Support For Tornado Cleanup Case Construction Equipment and heavy equipment dealer F&W Equipment provided veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon with equipment for use as part of Operation Cedar Crest, a cleanup operation spurred by three EF-1 tornadoes and one microburst that touched down on May 15, 2018 in Connecticut. The severe weather left more that 150,000 residents without power and blocked more than 428 roads. Team Rubicon deployed 44 members to the affected site, totaling 1,068 hours of volunteer work and 75,000 feet of debris moved. Team Ru-

bicon brought the community a potential savings of $31,600 in materials and labor. “This type of local, grassroots disaster response — matching regional Team Rubicon volunteers with Case equipment — is what was envisioned from the beginning of the partnership,” says Michel Marchand, vice president – North America, Case Construction Equipment. “Volunteers were able to make a real difference for residents and help them clean up and get back to normal quicker than they could have on their own.” b Source: Case CE

Talented Telehandler PHOTOS COURTESY WACKER NEUSON

FRONT PAGE STORY: Transportation and Logistics Company Adds Versatile New Wacker Neuson TH412 Telehandler and WL60 Wheel Loader for Its Ottawa Operations

C&C Transportation President / Co-Owner Alain Chenier speaks with Sontrac Equipment President Denis Desjardins in front of C&C Transportation’s new Wacker Neuson WL60 wheel loader and Wacker Neuson TH412 telehandler.

B

ased out of the nation’s capital, C&C Transportation is a transportation and logistics company that has been serving clients in Ontario and Quebec for the past 20 years, but with much longer history in dairy. The company is a subsidiary of E. Cousins Ltd., which has been serving the dairy industry since 1889. “About two decades ago, we decided to diversify into tow, flatbed, and dry box,” says Alain Chenier, President / Co-Owner, C&C Transportation. “That is when we founded C&C Transportation.” C&C Transportation now has satellite locations in Montreal and Toronto, 55 powered units (trucks), and 110 employees. They deliver everything from dairy products to dry goods to heavy equipment. “We

deliver all of the equipment for Wacker Neuson dealer, Sontrac Equipment, based here in Ottawa, as well as the Wacker Neuson warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario,” says Chenier. The company had a backhoe that they wanted to replace with a newer machine. Obviously, they considered what Sontrac Equipment has to offer, so Chenier asked Sontrac Equipment President Denis Desjardins to help find equipment solutions that meet the company’s needs. In response, Sontrac Equipment sent over a Wacker Neuson WL60 wheel loader and a Wacker Neuson TH412 telehandler for the company to demo. “From the first day, we loved the machines,” says Chenier. “From our initial discussions with C&C Trans-

portation, we were confident that the WL60 and the TH412 would be their best choice of machines in terms of capabilities, service and cost,” says Denis Desjardins, President, Sontrac Equipment. A class-leading loader “The loader is a little smaller than the backhoe, and it has great manoeuvrability; it can easily manoeuvre through the yard and parking lot, around trucks and other obstacles,” says Chenier. The WL60 offers the speed, payload and hydraulic flow (up to 40 gallons per minute) to handle a variety of jobsite needs. “The WL60 provides a versatile wheel loader with the power, performance and manoeuvrability to tackle most operations of yard and loading operations. C&C Transportation President / Co-Owner Alain sits in the company’s new TH412 telehandler. The company’s Loading, hauling, level- employees love the machine and have found a myriad of uses for it.

ling and clearing snow are simple and easy with the WL60,” says Desjardins. Powered by a 102 hp (76.5 kW) Tier 4 Final engine, the WL60 is the most powerful compact wheel loader in its size class. The machine also boasts class-leading travel speeds up to 40 km/h (24.9 mph) and a classleading hinge pin height of 3.66 metres (12 feet) that allows for loading and unloading high-sided dump trucks and hoppers. “The WL60 is the machine of choice when you need to get things done at a construction site,” says Wacker Neuson’s Mike Edyvean, Business Development Manager – Construction Equipment – Ontario and Manitoba. “Best-in-class operator comfort, high efficiency with attachments and more productivity for load and carry applications thanks to the 40 km/h driveline, and a 102 hp engine makes this machine unique in its class. Plus, there is no need for DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration, a tiltable cabin provides stressfree maintenance, and the machine’s powder coat-

ing increases the residual value. These features contribute to the loader being a useful companion for all of our customers.” Until recently, C&C Transportation’s WL60 primarily performed light material handling, snow removal, and lift and carry work, but it’s really being put to the test now as C&C Transportation builds a new warehouse and office on their Ottawa property. “We began excavating in June, and the loader is being used to move dirt and rocks, help in levelling and perform some lifting,” says Chenier. Atypical applications Wacker Neuson telehandlers are high-quality, highly manoeuvrable compact machines that can be equipped with numerous different attachments to increase the machine’s versatility and utilization, as well as to tailor the machine to the task at hand, making the machine more efficient and productive. C&C Transportation found diverse and unique applications for their Wacker Neuson telehandler. “Our mechanics love them—not only for their

easy serviceability, but because they are so very useful when it comes to taking a hood off a truck when we to do any kind of engine repair,” says Chenier. “We also use them around the property to meet our other lifting needs and for loading and unloading trailers.” The TH412 is also deployed in C&C Transportation’s towing and recovery operations, which the company began 20 years ago. “We load the TH412 on a

tilt and load tow truck, and then bring it to the scene of the accident,” says Chenier. “It works great on recovering parts, by pulling or dragging parts. As well, the telehandler has the strength to lift trailers and reefers (refrigerated trucks), and the telescopic booms means we can reach the heights that we need.” “The TH412 is an ideal complement to WL60 as it is a smaller machine which increases manoeuvrability

in confined spaces without sacrificing on versatility and lift performance and height,” says Desjardins. “The TH412 is a very versatile machine that can be used in many applications,” says Edyvean. “Working in the two-bytwo-metre class with a small turning radius and tremendous lifting capacities, it can be considered the Swiss army knife among telehandlers. The VLS (Vertical Lifting Sys-

tem) operator assistance system and an excellent view on all four tires provides a maximum level of operational safety, even in narrow environments.” “I would recommend Wacker Neuson products and Sontrac Equipment to anyone,” says Chenier. “Wacker Neuson provides quality equipment while Sontrac Equipment provides excellent service.” b Source: Wacker Neuson
