Bulk Hauler Walpole Earns Bulk Savings With Kenworth T880s In bulk hauling, tons are the name of the game. And for Walpole Inc., a bulk hauler with 240 company-owned tractors, getting more for less is paying dividends. “We’re always interested in shaving weight to haul more payload, but need to temper that with performance and durability,” said Keith Walpole, whose grandfather started the south Florida-based company in 1952. “What we’ve seen with our Kenworth T880s and pre-production PACCAR MX-11 engines is very promising. We’re now standardizing on the T880, and the MX11 certainly has the opportunity to be a large part of our operation.” According to Walpole, his T880 52-inch sleeper trucks with the PACCAR MX-11 each save more than 1,300 pounds in weight compared to the previous truck and sleeper combination the company was running in the same
application. To start, the PACCAR MX-11 engine is 400 pounds lighter than a 13-liter engine. Walpole also saves the following weight by specifying the 10-speed Eaton Fuller Advantage(TM) transmission (165 pounds), widebase tires (504 pounds), plus aluminum fifth wheel and air tanks (251 pounds). “We’re running five PACCAR MX-11 units down in Okeechobee, with occasional runs into Georgia and South Carolina,” said Walpole. “The engines are spec’d at 430 hp with 1,350/1,550 lb-ft of torque, and replace MX-13 engines with the same horsepower, but with 1,550/1,750 lb-ft of torque. From what our drivers tell us, they can’t tell a big difference in power performance. The units are working beautifully. Plus, we’re seeing a bump in fuel economy with the MX-11. So, it’s easy to see why we’re high on this engine – less weight and even better fuel economy.”
A fourth-generation company – Keith’s daughter, Rachel, son Bryan, and nephew Ryan are also involved in the business – Walpole began steady growth after deregulation in 1980. “We ventured into other states and expanded our ag-hauling with pneumatic and dry bulk tankers,” Walpole said. “Then, about 20 years ago, we opened a terminal in Birmingham to support our growth in that territory.” Walpole works with several Kenworth dealers to support his operation, but main truck orders are made through Kenworth of Jacksonville. Hauling agriculture feed has been a mainstay for Walpole, dating back to when his grandfather started the business. “He purchased a truck to handle the delivery of feed for a local feed co-op,” Walpole recalled. “A few years later, my dad took over the company and
ATTACHMENTS & MORE
began to buy and sell feed to local dairies. We’ve always had a philosophy of not trying to be the biggest – we just wanted to be the best at what we do. And, do what we say at a fair price. Being a multi-generational owned company is pretty rare these days and we’re very proud of our heritage. Today we continue to service several of the original farms that my grandfather delivered to back in the early days. That’s a real sense of pride.” For longer hauls, Walpole trucks put on about 140,000 miles a year, while regional trucks average between 110,000 and 120,000 miles. “We gross out in weight in our tankers and we’re still getting excellent fuel economy,” said Walpole. “Our running fuel economy (taking into account idling and operating the PTO while unloading) is coming in as high as 7.4 mpg – so our ‘driving’ fuel economy would be even higher.” The company has long been a Kenworth customer, but with the T880, Kenworth has made
February 2016
“monumental changes that have turned heads throughout the company,” Walpole said. “The fit and finish, along with the ride and reduction in road noise is unbelievable,” he said. “And, our drivers are raving about the trucks. They really are happy behind the wheel and that’s important to us. The driver shortage isn’t going away.” What’s more, Walpole said the trucks project the high-quality image the company is looking for. “The trucks promote our services, and they do help recruit drivers to our company. We’re very particular about our hires. We only want the best and those type of drivers tend to gravitate toward companies running the best equipment.” “It would be very hard to get me out of the T880,” said Willie Jackson, who is Walpole’s most senior driver with 39 years at the company. “I started when we only had three or four trucks in the fleet and have driven several different brands and models over the years. But, this is the truck for me right here – it rides smooth and is
comfortable.” Jackson also said a new feature in the T880 (also available in the T680), is a pre-trip inspection switch, which makes his job a whole lot easier. “All I do is flip the switch and my rig’s lights and blinkers, even brake lights, turn on. That way I can walk around and do my pre-trip inspection and see if all the lights are working.” According to Jackson, the combination of a nice truck to drive, and family atmosphere at Walpole means a lot to him. “I don’t think you’ll find many owners as approachable as Keith – I can always go in and talk, as can all our drivers,” he said. “We have a tight knit bunch.” The flagship Kenworth T880 Vocational Truck with the PACCAR MX13 engine was selected as the 2015 ATD Truck of the Year by a panel of commercial trucking journalists and a professional driver. The T880 was ranked high for exceptional handling, power, torque and outstanding visibility from the driver’s seat. b Source: Kenworth

Lower Oil Prices Having Significant Impact On Exports Alberta and Saskatchewan will have lower exports this year due to depressed oil prices but will rebound in 2016 through a partial price recovery and volume gains, according to a new global export forecast released by Export Development Canada (EDC). Manitoba will also see declines in its energy exports in 2015, but gains in other important sectors will offset that and give it a modest increase in overall exports. All three provinces will enjoy export growth in 2016. According to the Global Export Forecast Fall 2015, Alberta’s overall exports will slump 23 per cent in 2015, due to a 30 per cent drop in exports of energy, which accounts for more than three-quarters of the province’s exports. Saskatchewan, which relies on energy for about 40 per cent of its exports, will also see a significant decline – 43 per cent – in that sector, but strong growth in
exports of fertilizers and agri-food will greatly moderate the effects on its overall export performance. Manitoba’s energy exports will be down 24 per cent this year, but as energy is a much smaller share of exports than in the other two provinces, the effect on its overall exports is much less. “There’s no question that low oil prices are having a major impact on exports from Western Canada, especially Alberta,” said Peter Hall, Chief Economist at EDC. “But Saskatchewan and Manitoba are showing how provinces with a more diversified range of exports can soften the blow caused by declines in one sector.” EDC says Saskatchewan’s agri-food exports, which roughly equal the value of its energy exports, are set to rise 10 per cent in 2015, while fertilizer exports will increase by 38 per cent. In Manitoba, the greatest positive contribution to its exports will come
Feds Invest In Potato Processing Facility Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced an investment of nearly $380,000 for a potato processing plant in Carberry to increase efficiency, reduce waste and support the sustainable growth of Manitoba’s potato industry. The governments’ investment, provided under Manitoba’s Growing Forward 2 Growing Value program, will be used to install new and innovative equipment at the McCain Foods Canada’s facility. The plant processes about 430 million pounds of Manitobagrown potatoes every year, mostly into French fries. The upgrades will reduce potato and canola oil waste by 900,000 pounds and 800,000 pounds per year, respectively. The governments’ investment represents half of
the total equipment cost. McCain Foods Canada has invested more than $30 million in other upgrades to the Carberry facility over the last 10 years, including a $23 million waste water upgrade. This potato processing plant employs about 220 people, with another 10 positions to be created over the next three years as a result of the new equipment. Manitoba is Canada’s second-largest potato producer behind PEI, supporting 120 potato growers and employing 1,500 full-time and casual workers. In 2013, 70,000 acres of potatoes were grown in Manitoba valued at about $192 million. 80 per cent of potatoes processed in Manitoba are exported to the U.S. making this crop a valuable trade commodity. The Growing Value program provides financial assistance to existing agri-businesses that need
from shipments of pharmaceutical products, along with gains from manufacturers such as New Flyer Industries which is providing coach buses to several U.S. state governments. Alberta’s non-energy exports are also seeing a slight increase – 1 per cent – in 2015 and will post a further 4 per cent gain in 2016. “Manitoba and Saskatchewan are also more diversified than Alberta in the markets they sell into,” said Hall. “While the United States accounts for more than 90 per cent of Alberta’s exports, it’s only about two-thirds of the market for the other two.” A rebound in energy exports in all three provinces next year will also help them raise their overall exports. Alberta will see a 20 per cent increase in energy exports and a 15 per cent increase in overall exports; Manitoba’s energy exports will climb 15 per cent and overall exports by 6 per cent; and Saskatchewan will enjoy a 13 per cent increase in energy exports and a 5 per cent jump in overall exports. EDC is Canada’s leading provider of small business financing and insurto make changes to adapt to market forces and environmental considerations, to increase their ability to compete in domestic and international markets. The federal and provincial governments are investing a total of $176 million in cost-shared programming in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territorial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets. Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment also supports the Manitoba government’s goal of creating a $5.5 billion food processing industry by 2022, which is currently valued at $4.95 billion. Quotes “The Government of Canada recognizes that Canadian food processors must continually adapt and upgrade to remain competitive. The Canada and Manitoba governments are expanding the province’s network of automated weather stations after installing 17 new stations in 2015, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced today. Manitoba has a total of 61 automated weather stations operated by the provincial government which provide timely, detailed information useful to Manitoba farmers, free of charge. By 2018, the agro-meteorology program will expand to 84 stations. The minister noted climate change and moisture management as issues raised in the Agriculture Risk Management task force report, which was released in early 2016. Quotes “The Government of Canada is proud to support the expansion of automated weather station networks. Having enhanced access to weather and climate information will help farmers make important decisions affecting their farm.” — Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay “This sophisticated equipment has already been extremely useful to farmers throughout the province, providing them with critical information for crop and land management decisions. As the network continues to grow, we are able to provide information, focusing on specific details for more locations.” — Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn. b
information on soil conditions, risk assessment for crop diseases and insects, and support decision-making for the crop-residue burning program. These automated stations are located in areas that best represent the climate of the region. They are solar-powered and communicate wirelessly, allowing them to be set up in remote and rural areas. Measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction and soil temperature are collected, verified and posted to the provincial website hourly. Data from these weather stations will also be used to enhance flood and drought forecasting, precipitation maps, and monitoring severe weather. GE Oil & Gas to Acquire Advantec GE Oil & Gas (NYSE: GE) has agreed to acquire Advantec, a leading provider of subsea intervention equipment and services, to boost the company’s capabilities to offer cost-efficient products and services to customers worldwide.
The purchase is part of GE Oil & Gas’ efforts to address the challenges faced by its customers operating the growing number of mature subsea fields, and the company’s broader strategy to expand its position as a leading provider of sub-
sea production equipment and services solutions for full life-of-field management. Advantec will operate under the existing name and management team as part of GE Oil & Gas’ Subsea Services & Offshore
division. As such, it will continue to supply products and services directly to existing and new clients. Financial terms of the agreement to acquire the company, headquartered in Stord on the west coast of Norway, were not disclosed. The two companies are targeting to complete the transaction by year-end 2015, subject to customary regulatory approvals. GE Oil & Gas is currently one of Advantec’s largest customers, utilizing its core capabilities in electrohydraulic subsea controls

equipment, system integration as well as engineering and fabrication to support GE’s services, offshore portfolio and installed base of subsea equipment. For example, Advantec is a leading supplier of Installation WorkOver Control Systems (IWOCS), including a fleet of IWOCS rental units. IWOCS are a key enabler for a wide range of subsea intervention equipment. “With the acquisition of Advantec, we are expanding our comprehensive portfolio of services, so we can provide added value to our customers at a time when the industry requires more effective solutions. The acquisition will enable us to accelerate growth in our subsea services operations by helping us build a leading well intervention equipment supply and rental business alongside accelerating our integrated solutions offering,” said Rod Christie, President and CEO of GE Oil & Gas, Subsea Systems & Drilling. While GE Oil & Gas plans to use this acquisition to expand its presence in the subsea well interven-
tion sector, Advantec’s private equity majority owner Norvestor has found the right match from both a financial and future growth perspective. “We are excited to announce our agreement with GE, which we believe is the right company to help us realize the full potential of our well intervention controls technology to support existing and new clients in the offshore oil and gas industry,” said Magnar Aaland, CEO of Advantec. “GE has the global resources and vast expertise in subsea controls to take our technology to the next level.” Since Advantec was established in 2005, the company has grown from 20 to 370 employees with facilities in Norway, the UK, Lithuania, and the US. The Advantec acquisition will provide GE Oil & Gas with an integrated global supply chain to address the surging demand for IWOCS and associated technology, complementing GE’s existing subsea production equipment and services portfolio. b Source: GE Oil & Gas

Bauma Booked To Capacity Once Again Bauma 2016 to occupy all 605,000 square meters of space at the tradefair center. For the first time ever, companies on the waiting list can have themselves listed in the Bauma directory. It is the largest trade fair in the world with regard to space, and every three years, it is the highlight for the construction, building machine and mining industries: We are talking about Bauma, which takes place in Munich for the 31st time from
Dittrich, CEO of Messe München, is pleased with the feedback from interested companies, although he also understands the related difficulties: “Just like in 2013, we have been unable to satisfy all the requests for space or for increases in space.” Naturally, the company does what it can to allow as many companies as possible to adequately participate in the fair. Unfortunately, it has reached its maximum capacity with regard to space. Dittrich explains the idea behind the new participation alternative: “We want to give companies that we have been unable to accommodate in the past an opportunity to call the Bauma community’s attention to themselves and their products and to make contacts during the fair.” So far, a total of 17 companies have signed up to be part of the Bauma 2016 digital network. For additional information about this new service, please contact the Bauma Exhibition Group by telephone (+49 89 949-20265) or by e-mail (exhibiting@Bauma.de). b
April 11 to 17, 2016. The upcoming fair features a new service: For the first time ever, companies that are on the waiting list and had not yet been assigned space can have themselves listed in the Bauma directory. The companies then participate without stand space, although they will be included as additionally represented companies in the online exhibitor directory and will be listed under their respective product categories. They also have access to a special lounge, so they can make appointments and hold meetings there during the fair. In addition to lead management, they can also book other services such as electronic press compartments or advertising alternatives. One reason for this step is that the upcoming Bauma is already booked to capacity; there are already waiting lists for several sectors. Naturally, Klaus Source: Bauma 2016

Mack Trucks Green-Lights Renewable Diesel Fuel For Use In Mack Engines Following extensive truck and engine testing, Mack Trucks today signed off on the use of renewable diesel fuel in all Mack engines. Renewable diesel fuel delivers performance similar to diesel refined from petroleum, but with several additional customer benefits, including re-
duced greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, as well as decreased maintenance costs. “As the availability and customer requests for renewable diesel fuel increase, we worked to ensure its compatibility with our engines,” said Stu Russoli, Mack highway
BIG
and powertrain products marketing manager. “This approval gives Mack customers who seek to reduce their environmental footprint an additional choice when it comes to alternative fuels.” Similar to conventional biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is derived from biomass
feedstocks, including animal fats and oils. However, unlike biodiesel, renewable diesel fuel is produced using a different process and maintains physical properties and performance similar to petroleum diesel, meeting the same ASTM D975 standard. Renewable diesel fuel offers several environmental benefits to customers, including reducing particulate matter. A life cycle analysis of renewable diesel fuel conducted by the California Air Resources Board also demonstrated

reductions in greenhouse gases by 15 to 80 percent, depending on feedstock source used. Customers can also save money with renewable diesel fuel, as it requires fewer maintenance costs compared to other alternative fuels. The addition of renewable diesel fuel adds to Mack’s alternative fuel offerings. The CumminsWestport ISX12 G natural gas-powered engine is currently available in Mack Pinnacle DayCab model. The Mack LR and Mack TerraPro cabover models also offer natural gas options with the availability of the Cummins-Westport ISL G engine. Mack Trucks has approved the use of renewable diesel fuel in all Mack engines. With performance similar to petroleum diesel, renewable diesel fuel delivers additional benefits for customers, including re-
duced greenhouse gas and particulate emissions, as well as decreased maintenance costs. Dedicated to quality, reliability and total customer satisfaction, Mack Trucks, Inc., has provided its customers with innovative transportation solutions for more than a century. Today, Mack is one of North America’s largest producers of heavy-duty trucks, and Mack trucks are sold and serviced through an extensive distribution network in more than 45 countries. Mack trucks and diesel engines sold in North America are assembled in the United States. Mack manufacturing locations are certified to the internationally recognized ISO 9001 standard for quality and ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems. b Source: Mack Trucks

The Canada and Manitoba governments are investing more than $125,000 in new equipment to help a local hemp processor transform hemp straw into absorbent pellets for kitty litter, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced recently. Hemp Sense Inc. in Gilbert Plains will manufacture a natural, dust-free, environmentally-friendly kitty litter, tapping into a market worth $2.6 billion in North America. Hemp straw can absorb up to five times its weight in water, making it perfect for litter. It may also have potential to help clean up oil and chemical spills. Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment supports Manitoba’s Bioproduct Strategy and its goal of generating $2 billion in annual revenue by 2020.
Between 20 and 25 per cent of the hemp grown in western Canada is in Manitoba. Unused hemp straw does not biodegrade quickly, so this new, absorbent product will create a market for excess hemp that might otherwise go to waste. The federal and provincial governments are investing $176 million in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provincial-territorial policy framework to advance the agriculture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets. Quotes “The Government of Canada is pleased to support new innovation that transforms agricultural crops into new non-food consumer products. The Manitoba government is proud to support our province’s thriving hemp-based agribusiness. This product will reduce the industry’s carbon footprint while also growing the rural, green economy.” — Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn “The equipment added by this program will mean additional processing flexibility and capacity for Hemp Sense to manufacture and market diverse new products. We are creating the first hemp products for the absorbent market in North America and we have additional product plans in the near future which could bring added income to hemp farmers looking for new uses for their crop.” — President, Hemp Sense Inc. Ontario Supports Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Station Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ontario is providing up to $350,000 to support northern agriculture research at the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Station. The funding will provide the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Association with an opportunity to work with the Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance and other northern agricultural and research stakeholders to develop a sustainable, coordinated, long-term plan for agricultural research in the north. Supporting Northern
Ontario is part of the government’s plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people’s talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan. The province supports several agriculture research operations in Northern Ontario, including facilities in Thunder Bay, New Liskeard and Emo. b Source: Agg Ontario

The Observatory of national and world market trends for the next two years was outlined at Veronafiere during the first edition of SaMoTer Day, a training and guidance event focusing on opportunities and trends in the building and construction machinery market. The earth moving machinery market can expect the recovery to start in 2016. Progressive resumption is forecast next year on a global scale which will be consolidated in 2017, with total sales of 880,000 units, up by 33% compared to estimated results for 2015. There will be a favourable trend over the next two years for the sector in Italy which, following the vertical collapse of 2007 (-72%), seeks to close 2017 with 12400 units, up 44.8% over the performance in 2015. These forecasts for the sector were presented by Veronafiere through the new SaMoTer-Veronafiere Outlook event organised in collaboration with Prometeia, an international economic consulting and research firm. The results of the Observatory analysis were presented yesterday during the first SaMoTer Day, the training and guidance event focusing on opportunities and trends in the building and construction machinery market in Italy and world-wide (www.samoter.it). The initiative is one of the run-up events leading to the appointment with

the 30th edition of SaMoTer (22-25 February 2017) - Veronafiere’s triennial show dedicated to the construction equipment sector held in conjunction with Asphaltica, the bitumen and road infrastructure event organised together with Siteb (Italian Bitumen, Asphalt and Road-Building Association), and Transpotec Logitec, the road transport and logistics appointment by Fiera Milano. “SaMoTer Day provides companies with an effective market intelligence tool that helps them respond to rapidly changing international business scenarios,” said Giovanni Mantovani, CEO & Director General of Veronafiere –. The signals coming from the earth moving sector for the next two years are encouraging and we are consequently already working to make SaMoTer 2017 even more useful for companies who want to catch and benefit from this recovery.” The 2017 edition of SaMoTer, in addition to its exhibition and commercial aspects, will also focus on the management and prevention of environmental emergencies, with thematic focus meetings dealing with on land consolidation sites and the Government #italiasicura plan which envisages investments of over 7 billion euros and 3500 different projects. The Inaugural Conference of SaMoTer Day saw the CEO & Director General of Veronafiere joined by Michele Turrini, President of Siteb, Giuseppe Garri, Transpotec Logitec exhibition manager, and Roberto Paoluzzi, Director of CnrImamoter (National Research Council Institute). Samoter-Veronafiere Outlook: Annual Report And Forecasts For The Future The global market for excavators, concrete plant, drilling, crushing and asphalting machinery, cranes and site vehicles is still affected by the vertical collapse (-48%) in the two-year period 2008-2009. 2015 was still a tough year of a global scale: in the first
nine months of the year, 61,000 earthmoving fewer earth moving machines were sold (-11%) compared to the same period in 2014. In terms of macro-areas, growth was only seen in India (63,000 units) and North America (148,000 units). Matters were worsened by the bursting of the Chinese “bubble” (-37%) that in 2011 took one third of all international sales and the situation in Russia (-70%). Despite the positive development trend for construction activity, Centro Studi Prometeia estimates that the year will close with a loss of 9%. The good news for the sector – again according to the analysis in the SaMoTerVeronafiere Outlook – will come with the new year and continue in 2017 with a slow re-alignment of growth in the construction field (880,000 units sold; +33% over 2015). In addition to mature markets such as North America and Japan, in Europe the main input comes, in order, from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Among emerging countries, India takes first place, followed by Latin America.
As regards Italy, after continued acceleration in the last five quarters, Prometeia estimates a final figure for 2015 of 8500 new machines sold (+27%) which will rise to over 12,000 in 2017 (+44.8% compared to 2015). The Samoter-Veronafiere Outlook also analyses the trend in the construction sector. Forecasts for India – one of the most dynamic markets for residential construction and civil engineering alike – suggest it should close 2015 at +5.6% of investments, climbing further to +6.9% in 2016 and +7.4% in 2017. North America is making tentative recovery, with an increase of 5% expected for 2016 and also 2017. China over the next two years, on the other hand, should stabilise at an average growth rate of Continued on page 17

Dock Dynasty Sennebogen 875 R-HD Is On The Mark For Robindale Energy’s Donora Dock Operation
P
aul Theodorakos, Equipment Manager for Robindale Energy and its associated companies, readily admits that dock operations and material handlers were new to him when his company acquired an existing dock operation in Donora, on Pennsylvania’s Monongahela River in 2014. “We’re in the coal mining business and, in my 39 years of experience, I never needed to unload barges,” says Theodorakos. “A 1990’s vintage excavator, modified for material handling, came with the Donora property. But it wasn’t capable of handling the volume of coal we anticipated. I immediately started making phone calls, doing research to know
what type of equipment would be best for offloading coal barges. All signs directed me to Sennebogen.” Seeing a Sennebogen 875 R-HD in action sealed the deal A trip to the Charleston Bulk Transfer (CBT) facility operated by Maybank Industries Group in South Carolina was in order. Lee Gibson of Gibson Machinery, one of Sennebogen’s longest standing distributors, joined Theodorakos and his team to watch CBT’s recently acquired Sennebogen 875 R-HD in operation. Located on the The Charleston Bulk Transfer facility, which is located on the Cooper River moves upwards of 12,500 tons of coal per day from barge to shore. This convinced Theodorakos that a similar machine would be
ideal for his operations with Donora Dock LLC. “Our host, Turner Fabian, the President of CBT was most accommodating – he just bragged about his company’s 875 up and down,” recalls Theodorakos. “In this case, the machine bore out his words. I was impressed with a lot of its features, and especially its ‘Green Hybrid’ system.” The large third hydraulic cylinder mounted between the two main boom lift cylinders on the 875 R-HD is the centerpiece of the new Green Hybrid energy recovery system developed by Sennebogen. It captures power when lowering the boom in order to apply it again with the next lift. Sennebogen’s advanced design utilizes the firm’s well-proven hydraulic expertise along with ac-
cumulators to maintain an extremely smooth operation while cutting the required energy by 30%. The resulting fuel savings are significant. Meanwhile back at the Dock While Sennebogen completed assembly of their new Sennebogen 875 R-HD, the Robindale team returned to Donora to commence operations with a Sennebogen 850 M. The rubber-tired 850 M was fitted with a 5 yd. bucket.
By the time the 875 arrived this summer, the 850 had earned a permanent place in the Donora fleet, as a back-up and supplement to the larger machine. After testing the 875 through a few hundred operating hours, the onsite manager of the Donora Dock, John Ross remains convinced that this machine was the right choice. Swinging its 14 yd. coal bucket through several loading cycles per minute, he says the machine has
the potential to offload as many as 6 jumbo barges in a day. Producing more for less cost Ross and the 875’s lead operator were part of the team that visited Charleston and recommended the purchase of the machine. “It’s meeting all our targets,” Ross reports. “We can unload a barge in 1 ¼ hours or less and, with two barges at the dock; we can unload them both without Continued on page 19

Arnprior Trucker Posthumously Given Truck Hero Award “In trucking there’s a brotherhood. We share an identity. When we pull into a customer and see a long line-up of trucks, we look for one of ‘us’. When we pull into a truck stop we scan the parking lot for one of ‘us’. We meet thousands of trucks on the road every day, but we wave when we see one of ‘us’. As I pull into the yard tonight I’m one of the last trucks off the road. I see the empty parking spaces of the trucks. One isn’t coming home tonight. One of ‘us’ isn’t coming home tonight.” Those are a few of many memorable words by truck driver John Irish, a friendly acquaintance of fellow trucker Lindsay Findlay. Irish typed that entry into his Facebook page the night of Tuesday February 3, 2015. Just a few hours earlier, Findlay’s truck had crashed into a guard rail on Hwy. 401 near Whitby and
flipped over on its side. Findlay was cut-off by an impaired driver, but rather than ensure his own safety by slamming the full force of his truck into the reckless driver’s car – likely causing a chain reaction that would send both vehicles dangerously into traffic – the veteran Arnprior, Ont. trucker was able to limit the impact with quick maneuvering and responsive braking before eventually losing control and hitting the guardrail. He died at the scene. For his heroic actions, Findlay was recognized posthumously at the Ontario Trucking Association’s annual executive conference in downtown Toronto with the 2015 Bridgestone-OTA Truck Hero Award. Each year, OTA and Bridgestone Canada recognize a professional truck driver who has demonstrated courage, quick thinking and

integrity in the face of an emergency. Findlay’s wife Sandy and his daughter Brittany were in Toronto last night to accept the award. “We are very proud for what he did. We are proud he saved the other driver and possibly more drivers on the road that night,” says Sandy Findlay. “That was just his instinct to put people before himself.” Added Derek Crosby, Findlay’s employer at D&J Transportation: “A more inexperienced driver would have done something different and perhaps more people would have been killed or seriously hurt. He was definitely a hero. Even without this, he was a hero.” In the days after the crash Irish and dozens of other truck drivers rallied in the community of Arnprior to support the Findlay family, even organizing a massive truck convoy at his funeral – the lead truck carrying Lindsay’s casket to the church. “I think he would have absolutely loved being sent off that way,” says his daughter, Brittany. “They all came together for him that day. It’s amazing that out of something so tragic could come something so beautiful.” In presenting the award to the Lindsay family, Paul Dalcourt, national account executive, Bridgestone Canada, explained how the definition of a hero is “someone who sacrifices him or herself for the greater good. b

PEFC Week Brings International Partners Together Promoting sustainable forest management and having it recognized and rewarded in the supply chain from the local to the global level is a key priority shared by the many delegates who attended the 2015 PEFC Forest Certification Week in Montreux, Switzerland. Ben Gunneberg, PEFC International’s CEO and Secretary General, opened the 20th PEFC General Assembly with an empowering video and noted, “As a grassroots organization PEFC has an extremely important role to play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as we can deliver 14 of the 17 UN goals on the ground through our work with forest certification and forest-dependent communities.” The 17 goals are part of the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015 to end poverty in order to achieve sustainable development. “If we want to continue to grow a strong future for forests and the people that depend upon them, we must expand the reach and relevance of forest certification programs and better quantify and communicate the resulting positive conservation and community impacts,” said Kathy Abusow, Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) President and CEO. “As to expanding the reach and relevance, I would like to extend my warmest thanks
to Hans Drielsma, outgoing PEFC International Board member who had the vision to secure PEFC’s entrance into Asia with the formation of PEFC Asia almost a decade ago. This vision has now become a reality with unprecedented growth in the Chinese market, stability in the Japanese market, and a consistent flow of new members and interest from South East Asian nations to join the PEFC family.” Dr. Hans Drielsma, who served on the PEFC International Board of Directors from 2006-2015 for three terms of service and chaired numerous standards review committees and working groups over the years, is a professional forester with 40 years’ experience, including senior executive roles with Forestry Tasmania and State Forests NSW. The seeds that were planted with the formation of PEFC Asia are now bearing fruit, and there were many examples of this during 2015 PEFC Week. Representatives from China, Vietnam, South Korea, Philippines, Nepal, Thailand, and India, among many others, all spoke during 2015 PEFC Week about the strength, commitment and dedication of PEFC to sustainable forest management and responsible supply chains that consider and address economic, social and environmental values. The China Forest Certification Council (CCFC) was recognized by PEFC
International for leading the way with the most acres certified in China in the last year compared to any other PEFC member nation. Other PEFC members awarded for the greatest growth in certified forest area were PEFC Sweden and PEFC Canada, each increasing their area of certified forest by more than a million hectares. Wang Wei, Chairman of the China Forest Certification Council (CFCC), detailed the Chinese government’s announcement regarding new national Forest Certification Rules which set the requirements for all forest certifications operating in China. Certification bodies wishing to conduct forest management (FM) and chain-ofcustody (COC) audits, including CFCC, PEFC and FSC in China, will have to be authorized to conduct business in China by the Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA) of China and will have to be accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS), and CNCA’s approval must be completed before the end of 2015, otherwise the certification bodies have to quit the business until they get the approval by CNCA. CNAS is a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) in China. New entrant certification bodies are welcome provided they successfully meet the requirements set out by CNCA and CNAS. Certification bodies that have
already achieved accreditation by CNAS including the domestic ones such as Zhonglin Tianhe and Jilin Songbai etc. and the foreign invested ones such as BV and SGS etc., already received approval by CNCA, and they are in the conformity assessment application process by CNAS. According to the Forest Certification Rules, forest certification bodies which have received approval by CNCA shall carry out the certification audits against China’s national standards (which were endorsed by PEFC in 2014) or China’s sector standards, and they should also revise their internal technical documents according to these rules. In order to maintain market stability in the transition stage, FSC forest management and FSC chain of custody certificate holders shall implement the Chinese national forest management and chain of custody standards in order to keep their current FSC certificates during upcoming annual audits. Other highlights of the 2015 PEFC Forest Certification Week included: PEFC Italy showcased a video which highlighted PEFC certified wood at the World Expo 2015 in Milan. Expo pavilions from several countries including Austria, Belgium, China, France and Thailand featured PEFC certified wood for their walls, roofs, railings and in some instances their entire structures. PEFC Spain shared highlights from a recipe book “Cuisine from the Forests” which were a catalyst in raising awareness for non-timber forest products from forests certified to PEFC. The book highlighted the merits of wild food products, and was declared the Best Sustainable
February 2016
Cookbook in Spanish by the jury of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The products featured in this book were non timber forest products from certified forests recognized by PEFC. New Zealand was recognized as the latest country to achieve PEFC endorsement. With the endorsement of the New Zealand Forest Certification Scheme, the country’s forest owners can now obtain certification for their responsible management practices. The New Zealand Standard for Sustainable Forest Management (NZS AS 4708:2014) is an adoption of the PEFC endorsed Australian Forestry Standard (AS 4708:2013) and demonstrates how regions are increasingly working together to promote consistency and collaboration in meeting shared objectives. The week also saw new PEFC International Board members voted in, including Brian Kernohan, Director of Policy and Environmental Advocacy at Hancock Natural Resources Group, which operates in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Chile. “Brian’s appointment is fitting recognition for his leadership on sustainability. He has long been an advocate for certification, and is Past Chair of the SFI Resources Committee,” said Abusow. Brian delivered a presentation on quantifying the conservation impact of SFI certification during the 2015 PEFC Week which represents new thinking being advanced by SFI to capture and communicate the value of responsibly managed forests and responsibly sourced forest products. “Topics like water conservation, climate change and biodiversity are
useful lenses for us to use to quantify the important conservation work happening in the SFI community. Given that SFI is a part of the PEFC family, PEFC’s endorsement of SFI means that our conservation success stories are also a part of PEFC’s success globally,” said Brian Kernohan. Other newly elected PEFC board members include Dieter Koinig-Woehl, member of the European Works Council of Stora Enso since 1999. He is also a member of the standing committee of the European Federation of Building and Wood Workers. Also, Michal Proschek-Hauptman, CEO of the Environmental Umbrella Organisation was re-elected to the PEFC Board. The entire PEFC community warmly thanked Bill Street, outgoing Chairman of the PEFC International Board, for his tireless service. He has advanced the cause of sustainable forestry in many ways, not the least of which was the impressive expansion of PEFC during his eight-year tenure. Bill was also formerly Chief of Staff for the Woodworkers Department of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, one of the largest industrial trade unions in North America and the largest representative of wood and forestry workers. This year’s 2016 PEFC Week will take place in Bali, Indonesia, marking the second time PEFC Week has taken place in Asia, following a PEFC General Assembly in Malaysia in 2013. Find more information on the 2015 PEFC Forest Certification Week in the PEFC newsletter or go to www. pefc.org. b Source: PEFC
