• POWER BOOST WITH NO TIME LIMIT • DEDICATED HEAVY LIFT FUNCTION • HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION

DON’T SET LIMITS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO. Most excavators come with a power boost function that can deliver extra force when you need it most – but only for a few seconds at a time. What good does that do when you have a whole day’s work ahead of you? The power boost in KOBELCO excavators provides ~10% more bucket breakout force when you need it, for as long as you need it. They also offer a dedicated heavy lift function that provides ~10% more power when lifting and swinging. Combine that with our heavy-duty construction and you can be sure they’ll never back down from a challenge.

Agriculture And AgriFood Canada Agricultural trade is an important driver of economic growth in Canada. On average, about half of the value of Canada’s agricultural production is exported. The Government of Canada is making targeted investments to help achieve its objective of expanding agricultural exports to $75 billion by 2025. Today, the Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) President and CEO, Mark Allan, toured several funding partners through the new $37-million International Trade Centre at Evraz Place in Regina – which was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Growing Forward 2 agreement. The Centre will be the largest interconnected event complex in Canada, allowing the agricultural sector to showcase its world-class products to domestic and international audiences. The now-completed International Trade Cen-

tre at Evraz Place – which will open its doors to the world later this month – is hosting its first major agricultural event, Canadian Western Agribition, from November 20-25, an event that attracts more than 120,000 visitors annually, including guests from 75 countries. Quotes “Canada is the fifth largest agricultural exporter in the world. Across our economy, the agri-food sector is driving growth and high-skilled employment. Our government strongly supports the sector and is proud to open the new International Trade Centre at Evraz Place, which will help showcase highquality Canadian products to domestic and international audiences.” — Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and MP for Regina-Wascana. “The new facility will further enhance events that contribute to our provincial

economy, including shows integral to Saskatchewan’s agricultural industry which highlight our high quality livestock and innovative farm implements to an international audience. We are pleased to see the International Trade Centre open for business.” — Lyle Stewart, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture. “The International Trade Centre is an excellent example of the strong partnership and collaboration between the City of Regina, the Province of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada. The additional investment by the private sector partners demonstrates key local partnerships. While the ITC provides a new home for Agribition and Canada’s Farm Progress Show the facility is multi-purpose and flexible in attracting other events throughout the year.” — Michael Fougere, Mayor of the City of Regina. “Facilities of this calibre are imperative to attracting new event business and visitors to a city. We are delighted to be part of building our city as a stronger event hosting destination.” — Tracy Fahlman,

President and CEO, Regina Hotel Association. “We are truly grateful to all the funding partners, at all levels of government, who have made this facility a reality. Agribition is an international marketplace; an event that most producers can’t afford to miss. To have facilities that give those producers the tools to succeed means everything to us and to them.” — Bruce Holmquist, President, Canadian Western Agribition. “Redevelopment of the

Page 5

property’s west side was a key part of our long-term vision for a renewed and modernized Evraz Place, along with other major improvements over the last decade. With the addition of this facility and others like The Co-operators Centre, EventPlex and Mosaic Stadium, Evraz Place has evolved into the community’s go-to place for sport, business and entertainment.” — Mark Allan, REAL President and CEO. Quick Facts Funding for construc-

tion of the International Trade Centre included: • $22 million from the federal and provincial governments under the Growing Forward 2 agreement (Trade and Market Development Infrastructure Program) • $11 million from the City of Regina • $3 million from the Regina Hotels Association and • $1 million from Canadian Western Agribition. b Source: Gov’t of Canada

Farmers To Address Supreme Court Against Abandoned Wells A group with the support of thousands of farmers will appear before the Supreme Court of Canada to oppose a legal ruling that allows energy companies to walk away from unprofitable wells on agricultural land. The court announced Thursday that it will hear from the Action Surface Rights Association in an appeal of the so-called Redwater decision. It allows bankrupt energy companies to abandon wells during bankruptcy proceedings without having to clean up the sites. “It didn’t seem like anybody cared about the landowners’ position,” said Daryl Bennett, a farmer from Taber, Alta., and a member of the surface rights group, which asked the court to let it intervene. “Industry is able to walk away from the requirement to return the land back like it was when they first took it.” The 2016 ruling in Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench

allows bankrupt energy companies to sever their connection with unprofitable and unreclaimed wells when their assets are sold off for creditors. Since that decision, more than 1,800 wells representing more than $100 million in liabilities have been abandoned. Alberta’s energy regulator, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the Alberta government and legal scholars have all warned about the consequences of that ruling. Bennett and his neighbours are living with the results. He said friends of his have four wells on their land, two of which have been cut loose. “The company has come in and they’ve said they don’t have to follow any of the terms of the lease any more,” he said. “They (farmers) can’t get a loan on their land because of existing pollution. There’s noxious weeds being spread from lease to lease by the operator. They

can do whatever they want. “The land’s not being respected. The landowners aren’t being respected.” Farmers also lose out on promised lease payments. The Orphan Well Association, an industryfunded group that cleans up wells that have been left unreclaimed, can’t keep up with the number of companies walking away. Bennett points out that farmers in Alberta can’t legally refuse an energy company that wants to drill on their land. “The head of the Alberta Energy Regulator has just come out and said the system is broken. If the system is broken, why are you still imposing it on landowners?” Jim Ellis has said the problem lies in federal legislation and a three-year economic downturn that has left many good-faith operators in dire straits. The original judge ruled that federal bankruptcy law takes precedence over provincial environmental rules. Bennett said his group has about 200 members. Its appearance before the court is supported, however, by farm groups across Alberta and Saskatchewan, as well as by the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the National Farmers Union. The Alberta regulator has said it will examine the histories of companies and their directors applying for licences to drill a well. Staff will look for evidence of poor regulatory compliance or non-payment of bills such as taxes, royalties and other industry levies. Lawyers for the landowners are to address the Supreme Court on Feb. 15. b

When Artificial Intelligence Meets The Construction Industry The potential for artificial intelligence – or AI – is high on the social agenda. Seemingly, everyone from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to Tesla CEO Elon Musk has an opinion on the impact of AI on our everyday lives. But how will the technology of today impact the construction of tomorrow? Once confined to the pages of science fiction novels, artificial intelligence (AI) has now become a reality that cannot be ignored. In many ways, we are already using AI – from the news feed we read on our smartphones to the software that enables us to shop online securely. We no longer see AI as a farfetched concept resigned to our imaginations, it is something we are experiencing and benefiting from every day. The advantages of AI are limitless and permeate not just our everyday

lives, but across all industries. For the automotive industry, the launch of selfdriving cars means a faster mode of transportation and a significant reduction in accidents and emissions. A similar statement can be made about the construction industry. Early adopters are already using the technology to increase the efficiency, safety, and quality of construction projects. Big Data So, what exactly is artificial intelligence? It is a collective term used to describe when a machine mimics human cognitive functions, like problemsolving, learning, and pattern recognition. AI includes a process called machine learning, whereby algorithms are used to enable a machine to learn from the data it is exposed to. Therefore, the more data to which a machine is exposed, the better it will become at

understanding and provide insights. In a time when humans are increasing data creation every day, AI provides an endless resource for machines to learn and adapt. But how does that translate to the construction industry? The volume of data generated on an average construction site is growing – from images captured via mobile devices, to drone videos, security sensors, machine telematics, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and more. The main challenge, however, is not capturing all the data, but rather, implementing a system capable of managing the information, allowing customers to make the most out of it. Increasing Safety And Efficiency AI programs deliver precise data and insights, helping construction contractors maximize the safety, value, and productivity

of worksites. For example, Smartvid.io – a photo and video management platform used by construction companies such as Skanska and Arup – uses AI to sift through mass quantities of images and videos taken at a construction site and spot potential hazards. The software uses image recognition algorithms to identify specific search criteria, like hard hats, safety vests, and hi-vis colors so that it can unearth images to highlight those construction workers who are not wearing the proper safety attire or are possibly violating safety guidelines. Within a matter of minutes, the search results are collected, collated and delivered to a site supervisor – a task that would otherwise take several hours to complete. Manufacturers like Volvo Construction Equipment are exploring how emerging technologies can increase the safety of job site personnel. After launching Compact Assist in 2015, an operator assist program, Volvo CE is now developing AI algorithms, which detect and decipher specific objects using several computer vision methods. The advanced system

sends a warning message to the operator to reduce the risk of accidents. As well as increasing safety, AI has many other benefits, like performing mundane, repetitive and sometimes dangerous labor-intensive tasks. Dr. Fares Beainy, machine intelligence program leader at Volvo CE says: “AI techniques can help inexperienced machine operators to carry out complex tasks, which they otherwise could not. It’s advantageous in an industry that’s finding it increasingly difficult to source highly skilled and experienced operators.” Human Vs. Machine Research suggests that in the coming years, some jobs could be automated,

leaving many people to worry about their future employment. But as it turns out, the rise in AI is not as terrifying as science fiction would have us believe. Autonomous machines are simply part of evolution, according to Dr. Beainy. “When the first hydraulic machine was introduced, people had similar apprehensions. But, with change came new opportunities. The same phenomenon is happening with the introduction of AI. It will be gradual, but by the time intelligent and autonomous machines are implemented into construction, new jobs will have been created to complement them.” b Source: Volvo

The Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change agreed to in late 2016 by the Government of Canada and most provinces and territories, including Alberta, is expected to result in the carbon price increasing to $40 per tonne of CO2 in 2021 and $50 per tonne of CO2 in 2022, thereby increasing the value of the carbon credits in the future. b

TransAlta Corporation (“TransAlta” or the “Company”) (TSX: TA; NYSE: TAC) today responded favourably to details of the Government of Alberta’s determination to permit carbon credits to be earned by existing wind and hydro generation in the Alberta fleet.

On December 6, 2017, the Government of Alberta announced its intention to adopt a carbon credit regime that will fully recognize the value of carbon reductions from the generation of electricity from existing renewable assets. Under Alberta’s output based allocation system for carbon emissions, TransAlta’s existing wind and hydro facilities will receive credits for emissions below the performance standard of 0.37 tonnes of CO2 per MWh. Effective January 1, 2018, these credits can be used to offset

up to 40%, escalating to 60% by 2022, of the carbon price obligations incurred by generation that exceeds the performance standard, which will be charged a price of $30 per tonne of CO2. The carbon credit regime will allow the Company to allocate the emissions benefits from its existing renewables generation in Alberta to offset the direct carbon costs of its thermal generation, including generation from its coal-to-gas converted units. “The recent announcement by the provincial government will Source: TransAlta

This move to an open platform will provide much needed flexibility to their customers when integrating different autonomous vehicle types throughout a mine site. b Source: Liebherr

“Hands-On” Experience Leads RMG To Sennebogen Scrap Handlers Now a co-owner of Roane Metals Group LLC (RMG), Luke learned the recycling trade on the job, working alongside his father-in-law, Albert Baisley, at Rockwoods, Southern Alloys and Metals. When RMG began, they used the hands-on approach to learn their way

around scrap handling machines. “We tried all the usual suspects: different types of loaders and different dealers,” Wyatt reports. “One machine might be a little quicker. Another might have a stronger boom. But at the end of the day, it just made sense to put

all our eggs in one basket, we chose the best machine with the best dealers. We figured that’s how to make sure we have the dealer’s attention when we need support.” Lessons learned: for RMG, the right combination was Sennebogen purpose-built material han-

dlers, backed by the nearby Power Equipment dealership. Long-Life Service RMG now runs a number of Sennebogen machines, with most of them on their main site in Rockwood and another at their branch location in Crossville. “We got our first Sennebogen, an 825 M, from Power Equipment in 2007. It’s still doing all our loading work in Crossville, with over 26,000 hours on it. It’s had a couple normal wear parts through it, but it still runs on all its original pumps. It’s done pretty dog-gone

livery of their newest Sennebogen machine, an 835 M E Series model. All of their Sennebogen equipment runs on rubber tires, but the new machine is dedicated to feeding the site’s 750-ton Sierra shear/logger/baler. The operation sorts, grades, shears, compacts and ships up to 70,000 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals per year. The other Sennebogen units offload material trucked in by customers, and prepare loads for shipping by truck or rail. “We put the new 835 M E in the hands of our longest-serving operator, Darrell. He keeps the material moving 8-10 hours a day, every day. The elevating cab puts Darrell over 18 feet in the air, so he has a good look into the shear. We have very little downtime problems with the Sennebogen, because we’ve never had any major issues with any of these machines.” The learning process will continue at RMG. Wyatt has plans to send his technicians to the Sennebogen Training Center in Stanley, NC soon. “We appreciate the support we get from Power Equipment,” he says. “But if we don’t have to call the dealer every time we need to service the equipment, that works for me too!” About Sennebogen Sennebogen has been a leading name in the global material-handling industry for 65 years. Based in Stanley, N.C., within the greater Charlotte region, Sennebogen LLC offers a complete range of purpose-built machines to suit virtually any material-handling application. Established in America in the year 2000, Sennebogen LLC has quickly become a leading provider of specialized equipment solutions for recycling and scrap metal yards, demolition, barge and port operations, log handling, transfer stations and waste facilities from coast to coast. A growing network of distributors supports Sennebogen LLC sales and service across the Americas, ensuring the highest standard of professional machine support and parts availability. b

well for us!” On balance, Wyatt feels that most machines in the category will perform their day-to-day work. However, RMG chose to stick with Sennebogen for the long-term reliability of the machines and parts support available from Power Equipment. Gary Hirsch, Vice President and General Manager says it’s no surprise. “Purposebuilt material handlers are the way to go. And Sennebogen has invested heavily in its US-based parts inventory and factory support services. Providing first rate customer service is the driving value behind Power Equipment and we were thrilled to have represented Sennebogen for the last 10+ years.” Continuing Investment RMG is also investing in its facilities. Recently, Wyatt says, they poured close to a half million dollars worth of concrete to expand the paved area in its main yard. The RMG truck fleet now totals 18 tractors & trailers and rolloffs to serve customers within a 150 mile radius of Rockwood – not including the 85 units operated by their sister company, Roane Transport.
