In an age of technologydriven communication and internet-based learning, Hydra-Slide Ltd. Is taking training back to first principles, offering hands-on instruction on every piece of equipment they design and manufacture. At the forefront of Hydra-Slide’s training program are their Low Profile and Heavy Track skidding systems as well as the Canadian manufacturer’s specialized hydraulic power systems. Hydra-Slide skidding systems have proven to be one of the most costeffective and safe methods for moving all types of heavy loads. The heartbeat of these skidding systems is the company’s conventional and synchronous hydraulic power units. The Hydra-Pac Synchronous 10,000 psi hydraulic power units provide synchronized control of multiple hydraulic cylinders, suitable for operation of all Hydra-Slide

skidding systems, turntables, climbing jacks and most other double-acting jacking applications. Robert Young, director of operations and lead trainer at Hydra-Slide, explained that the Hydra-Pac Synchronous power units are often a focal point of training sessions because of their unique operation, which is different than other unified jacking systems. These units, available in diesel, propane or electric models, offer synchronized control of multiple lifting points, so multiple cylinders can be safely extended or retracted completely in unison even under different loading conditions. He said: “The important point to make to training participants is that they should not try to achieve equal pressures. Each circuit will not necessarily have the same pressure with our systems; an offset center of gravity will result

in one side being heavier, thus, will show higher pressures. Sin Chew Woodpaq Pte Ltd., of Singapore, was a recent recipient of training, having taken delivery of a HT500 heavy track skid system, heavy load turntable and synchronous power unit. Sin Chew Woodpaq’s Hao Teng said: “We have received training on the operation of the power unit, the skidding system and the turntable. Training was informative and very handson. We have learned about a few best practices and also pitfalls to look out for.” Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) is a Texas-based electric utility specializing in electric substations and power transmission lines. Andy Cooper, safety and training manager at LCRA along with his crew recently received training on their new XLP150 extreme low profile skidding system and

Hydra-Pac Synchronous power unit. This included jacking and sliding a real transformer to test the entire system. He explained why LCRA chose to invest in training: “If you don’t operate equipment as designed and intended, you can have negative results and potentially get someone hurt. The training ensures all the right steps are taken and understood. I would rate the technical training very highly. The Q&A and step-by-step instruction was perfect. Having a rep onsite during a move (albeit a practice move) was invaluable.” Hands-on training Young said: “Sometimes I am on-site for the first project where the new Hydra-Slide systems are being used, and sometimes we do a dry-run in the client’s yard just to get them familiar with the set-up and operation of their equipment. I get people comfortable working with the equipment and from there I follow a procedure that aligns with the flow of our operating manual.” For Young, hands-on training with the equipment

is an ideal scenario, though it isn’t always possible. He explained: “We are developing an online video training program now so that our clients can have remote access to practical, step by step instruction. It’s going to be very valuable for training new personnel or refreshing the crew’s knowledge before a project. Both on-site and video training focus on operation and troubleshooting. We know in the real world things don’t always go perfectly; for example, hydraulic hoses get connected backwards, or skid tracks aren’t set up completely parallel. We want our clients to feel prepared to safely handle these situations.” Janine Smith, vice president at Hydra-Slide, added: “This was a big year for onsite training; we performed training at facilities in Canada, the USA, Singapore and Qatar. The scope of our training does not cover how to execute the job or comment on the client’s rigging plan, however we find that when the client fully understands how the equipment functions and how it is intended to be setup and operated, they are

much more confident and better prepared to safely and successfully complete their tasks.” Young, who joined Hydra-Slide in 2012 with a background in engineering, said: “Give me a person who has experience of heavy rigging and a grasp of the English language, and even if they may not be familiar with modern jack and slide techniques I would be comfortable in training them. Once fundamentals are established, hands-on training puts the knowledge into real-world perspective.” Smith concluded: “We encourage all of our customers to read and fully understand the operating manuals that come with the equipment, as well as ask any questions that they have about the intended applications, limitations or use of their Hydra-Slide systems. The goal is that everyone is confident and prepared to operate these systems, and we will provide whatever level of after-sales support is requested.” b Source: Hydraslide

Seaspan Shipyards Celebrate Launch Of Important Vessel Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) recently celebrated the launch of the first large vessel to be designed and built under the Government of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) – OFSV1, the first of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV).

In 2011, the Government of Canada competitively selected Seaspan to be its Non-Combat Shipbuilder as part of the NSS program. Under the NSS, Seaspan will build and deliver noncombat vessels at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in North Vancouver for

the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and Royal Canadian Navy. OFSV1 is the first large vessel to be designed, built and launched under the NSS. It represents an important milestone in Seaspan’s long-term strategic relationship with the Government of Canada.

“Seaspan Shipyards is proud to be building ships in Canada for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy,” said Brian Carter, President & CEO – Seaspan Shipyards. “Today’s event is an exciting occasion for not only our company and employees, but Canada’s broader shipbuilding and marine industries; it is a chance to celebrate this shared achievement and acknowledge the long-term partnership that exists between Canada and Seaspan to build non-combat vessels in British Columbia.” “Our government is delivering on commitments made to the Canadian Coast Guard and is proud to see the launch of the first large non-combat vessel under the National Shipbuilding Strategy,” said the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Public Services and Procurement. “This Strategy is offering significant opportunities to Canadians and Canadian suppliers across Canada.” OFSV1 is a 63 metre CCG fisheries research vessel. The ship will be used to gain a better understanding of the health of fish stocks and their ocean environ-

ment. OFSV1 is the first of three OFSV ships built by Seaspan, with considerable progress made on the remaining two ships. “Today’s launch is a significant milestone for our government as we make good on our commitment to providing the men and women of the Coast Guard and our scientists with the equipment they need to conduct their important work for Canadians,” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, PC, QC, MP, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard. Through the NSS, Seaspan has embarked on many years of sustained shipbuilding on the West Coast that is delivering results to Canada and the Canadian economy. Seaspan’s work on the NSS non-combat package of vessels has already helped create thousands skilled, middle-class jobs across the country; this year alone, Seaspan has awarded more than $180M in contracts to Canadian businesses, which comprise more than 90% of its total suppliers. Todate, Seaspan has committed to spend more than $540 million with over 400

Canadian businesses on NSS-related work. “Seaspan is playing a major role in rebuilding B.C.’s shipbuilding sector by creating good jobs for British Columbians, growing local supply chains and making key investments in innovation research,” said Bruce Ralston, the Government of British Columbia’s Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology. “The launch of this vessel is the first of many, and signals to the rest of Canada and the world that B.C. is ready and capable to take on large scale projects and produce state-of-the-art vessels.” “Shipbuilding is an industry of strategic importance for a maritime nation like Canada. Thanks to the Government of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy, our domestic shipbuilding industry is being rebuilt and positioned for long-term success,” said Brian Carter. “The launch of this vessel shows that the NSS is delivering on its promise of ships built in Canada by Canadians and demonstrates the capabilities of our highly-skilled workforce.” b Source: Seaspan

Extensive electrification Similar to the larger R6e impact crusher model, the R5e has a highly efficient 5100 kg rotor (B/Ø: 1000 /1260 mm, feed hopper: 800 x 1050 mm) driven directly via the 345 kW Volvo six-cylinder diesel engine (TAD 1373 VE; EU IV) (“rotor-by-diesel”). The operating hydraulics powers all the lifting cylinders on the chassis and conveyor belts, the track drive, the vibrating discharge chute and double-deck primary screen and the compact doubledeck post-screen module with oversize/stockpile conveyor. A 160-KVa generator now supplies the power to all other conveyor systems – including the 5 m³ vibrating feeder – and the new Keestrack Neodym overbelt magnets (option). On

the basis of the anticipated higher mobility compared to the R6e, the Keestrack R5e does not offer plug-in network operation, but can drive the subsequently connected screens or stockpile conveyors (approx. 38 kW connected load) via the 63 A supply. With a total additional weight of a mere 500 kg compared to the diesel-hydraulic version, the electrical unit guarantees the full mobility of the Keestrack R5e, which is also available with an optional dolly trailer chassis (transport height/width with final screen: 4000/3000 mm). The hybrid unit can be deployed just as quickly at the building site: All conveyors and additional modules can be configured Continued on page 11

number units sold in 2016 were reached before the end of the first six months – 90 % of these being in the form of hybrid or fully hybrid models. The Keestrack R5 is a mid-range series of models with approx. 42 t basic weight and a maximum 50 tonnes with an overband magnet and double-deck final screen including oversize material recycler. Even when it was introduced over three years ago the mobility and production rate of the dieselhydraulic crusher proved to be virtually unrivalled for its performance class – and now following a series of upgrades, Keestrack presents the R5e, a diesel-electric version of its 350 t/h all-round model.

pact R3, which is proving itself on the market as a highly flexible 30 tonne “construction-site crusher”. Keestrack’s toprange R6 flagship model has a total weight of a mere 60 tonnes when fully equipped and remains the most prominent machine among the 1300-impactors for recycling, large-scale projects, and quarrying applications. Thanks to the licence-exempt dolly transport it readily competes with the much heavier competition within the 450 t/h performance class. Moreover, the large-scale “Destroyer” unit has been available for several years as an R6e model in a diesel-electric hybrid version with electric motors driving the conveyor belts and screen components. Since 2014, the Keestrack R6e has been available with a 250-kW electric motor for the crusher and an electric 110 kW drive for the onboard hydraulic system, and optionally also the allelectric plug-in operation from the mains. Thanks to a high-performance onboard diesel engine, the large-scale crushers remain highly flexible, while up to 45 % of the energy costs can be saved even in semi-stationary operations. Such an advantage is also directly reflected in Keestrack’s sales figures: In 2016, 80 % of the R6 machines were represented by diesel-electric or all-electric sales. This year, the total

Opinion

End Of Energy East, Another Win For Our Competitors It was just another week in Canada when businesses and investors were taking their ideas, their people, and their capital elsewhere. The week of Thanksgving was the announcement that TransCanada has scrapped its $15.7 billion Energy East pipeline proposal, after the National Energy Board (NEB) changed the regulatory review process and after it was clear there was no way around the opposition from local and provincial politicians in Quebec. In a decade, we have gone from a country on the verge of becoming a global energy superpower to a place where, because we have so little access to international markets for our oil, we have to sell it at a discount to the United States. This is a $48 million daily gift to our neighbours, who export their own oil at the full international market price. Sadly, this is self-inflicted. Canada is now a country where it is simply becoming too difficult to build big infrastructure projects. Earlier this summer, Desjardins announced it will refuse to finance Canadian energy projects. The oil and gas sector directly employs more than 425,000 Canadians and are the largest source of private sector investment in the country. It’s hard to imagine a leading na-

tional financial institution in China, Germany, Singapore or the U.S. abandoning a major sector of their economy – it would be an unacceptable national betrayal. Yet, this announcement conjured a collective yawn from most Canadians as though it is routine and without consequences for our national economy. As federal and provincial governments across Canada have made regulatory approval and permitting process increasingly complicated, time-consuming and expensive, one could be forgiven for thinking they are doing their level best to shut down our energy economy. Well, their plan is working. Consider that TransCanada just spent $1 billion on due diligence for Energy East and has absolutely nothing to show for it. The energy sector in our country is slowly being hollowed out – talent, opportunity and familysupporting jobs are slipping away. Over the past three years, there has been an exodus of international investors from Canada’s oil and gas sector. The largest players in the world are leaving and are not coming back. Too often in Canada, the rules change, the goal posts are moved, and companies seeking to invest billions of dollars, create jobs and provide opportunities for Canadians are unjustly

Practical tests have demonstrated a considerable decrease in fuel consumption of up to 45 % compared to dieselhydraulic models, mainly due to a more even rotational speed of the hightorque Volvo diesel engine (max. 2380 Nm at 1200 rpm). Fundamentally, the extensive reduction of complex hydraulic lines results in lower cooling requirements, lower risks of leakage and clearly lower maintenance demands during everyday operations. b

without lengthy additional assembly work or support, the sequential automatic starter of the Relytec control unit is responsible for starting up the system components. The system uses load and level sensors to optimise production rate and quality during operations. All system functions can be controlled by radio remote as a standard; the optional Keestrack-er GPS/ UMTS monitor precisely documents all functions and provides information on potential malfunctions or required maintenance work.

vilified in the process. In British Columbia, the Site C clean energy project – which has been under construction for two years – is now being forced to undergo yet another review. This, after years of independent reviews and government approvals upheld in no less than 14 court challenges. Petronas threw in the towel on its $36 billion LNG project to export natural gas from B.C. to markets in Asia hungry for cleaner sources of energy than coal or oil. And the new provincial government in B.C. launched a last-minute challenge to the $7.4 billion Trans Mountain Pipeline project, asking the court to overturn all the National Energy Board and federal cabinet approvals. This, after a decade of effort, a 29-month independent review by the NEB, and federal and provincial government approvals. It’s easy to say it was never in the cards for Canada to become an energy super power and some do. But it does not help when every conceivable roadblock is placed in the path of companies that have the

vision, capital and courage to try. The past few weeks have been dominated by conversation over changes to the small business taxes. Shockingly, some say we have too many small businesses in Canada and that not enough of them grow into larger enterprises. That’s a matter of opinion, but surely the answer is not to penalize Canadians who want to start a new venture or who are managing small businesses that are the lifeblood of our economy and to label them tax cheats. Unfortunately, we are losing sight of what it takes to attract investment, create opportunities and compete internationally. And, by this measure, Canada’s loss is the gain of its competitors – countries focused on fostering growth, attracting investment, and getting their natural resources to markets. The brash and bold character that built our great country is in danger of being read about only in the pages of history textbooks. b By Chris Gardner, President, Independent Contractors and Businesses Association

Driving It, Is Loving It: The New YT Tractor Range The Demopark exhibition in Eisenach, Germany, this past year, was to be the highlight of the agricultural summer for us. For the first time, customers in the municipality and landscaping sectors in Europe were to see and try the new YT2 tractor range. We are convinced of the exciting new concept of the new YT2 tractors, but is the audience too? From the moment the gates to the exhibition grounds opened, we attracted a lot of visitors to our stand. Demopark is the largest open-air exhibition for the green sector in Europe. This means that visitors are able to drive, feel and experience the latest technology in machinery. And they did. Many visitors climbed the cabin of the YT2 tractors we had on show and made a test drive on the fair grounds. Positive, Enthusiastic Feedback The overall response of the audience was very positive and full of enthusiasm. But there was more. The fact that ‘practioners from the sector’ actually drove the tractors, provided us with quite some valuable feedback to take back home. The YT2 tractors on show were pre-production models. Machines will be available from production in the fourth quarter of the year, and will soon replace the popular EF series models. Highly Productive The new tractors set a

new benchmark for driver comfort, ease of maintenance and operational versatility. Their most striking new features focus on: Engine – Reliable, emissions-compliant, futureproof and field-proven diesel engine Transmission – Hydrostatic transmission provides smooth changes and optimum power throughout the speed range. Cabin – Spacious, airconditioned cab delivers optimum operator comfort and all-round visibility. Handsome Next to being highly productive, Yanmar YT2 tractors are handsome too. They have been designed by world-renowned Japanese industrial designer Ken Okuyama. Ken Okuyama is well-known for the design of numerous products such as architecture, furniture, robots, motorcycles and cars, including Ferrari and Porsche. Mr. Okuyama is a member of the board of Directors of Yanmar Holdings, Inc. since April 2013. Demopark Debut For Yanmar Yt2 Tractors World-leading tractor manufacturer Yanmar will use the Demopark exhibition in Eisenach (11 to 13 June) to underline its commitment to the municipality and landscaping sectors with the introduction of the YT2 series models. The Demopark exhibition will provide the German launch-pad for the

new YT2 tractor series from global leader Yanmar. Designed to meet the specific needs of the landscaping sector and local authorities and municipalities, the new tractors set a new benchmark for driver comfort, ease of maintenance and operational versatility. Appearing in Germany for the first time on stand E-585, the new YT2 models are designed to provide owners and operators with reliable, year-round performance and benefit from a number of key features including: Engine – Reliable, emissions-compliant, futureproof and field-proven diesel engine. Transmission – Hydrostatic transmission provides smooth changes and optimum power throughout the speed range. Cabin – Spacious, airconditioned cab delivers optimum operator comfort and all-round visibility Hard-Working & Reliable Developed to replace its popular EF series models, the agile Yanmar YT2 tractors have been designed by world-renowned industrial designer Ken Okuyama who also designed the Yanmar YT3 models, with Vario transmission, which are available from this moment. But there is more to the new YT2 series that just good looks and pleasing aesthetics. These hard-working and reliable tractors are designed to deliver optimum performance

across a wide range of applications including landscaping, light construction and city maintenance. They are powered by a common-rail, 3-cylinder diesel engine that delivers a power output of 35 horsepower (26 kW). The Stage 5-ready engine is fitted with a dependable particulate filter that minimises engine emissions and makes the YT2 models ideally suited to inner city and environmentally-sensitive applications. The reliable engine drives through a hydrostatic transmission that facilitates smooth acceleration throughout the power range and which delivers a top speed of 30 km/hour. An easy-to-use twin pedal allows the operator to switch effortlessly between forward and reverse direction while both 2WD and 4WD can be activated and deactivated via a simple electrical switch. Also the YT235 offers bi-speed for easy, quick and short turning in the working area. Comfort Optimised YT series tractors are operated from a spacious and well-appointed cabin that provides excellent allround visibility to front

Page 13

and rear-mounted implements and of the surrounding work area for optimum safety. Visibility is improved still further by the relocation of the air conditioning and heating package to the rear of the machine which provides uninterrupted forward vision. The cabin is isolated to protect the operator from both noise and vibration, making the machine a comfortable work environment even during extended work periods. In-cab noise levels are ≤ 82 dB(A). An almost flat cabin floor provides plenty of room for the operator and for the storage of tools whilst affording unencumbered ingress and egress from the work station. Equipped with turf tyres, the compact YT2 tractors are just 2.08 metres tall, allowing them to operate in areas where working height is at a premium. This ability to work in confined spaces in enhanced by a turning circle of just 3.3 metres without the use of bi-speed turning. A rear 3-point hitch lift capacity of 1,350 kg and a broad range of front and rear-mounted implements

underscore the versatility of the new YT2 models and allow them to perform a multitude of tasks across a broad spectrum of applications and industry sectors. The machines on display at Demopark are pre-production models. Machines will be available in the fourth quarter, direct from the Yanmar production line. Comprehensive Range Yanmar will be completing its Demopark line-up with a display that includes representative models from across the company’s comprehensive range, each reflecting the company’s half century of tractor design, development and innovation. Visitors to the show can take the opportunity to view the SA series machine, with 21 and 24 HP engine and which also feature a new operator’s cabin. These will appear alongside the GK series models that range from 16 to 20 HP; the EB series machines with 31 HP output range; and the YT3 series that extends from 47 to 60 HP. b Source: Yanmar

Governments and manufacturers envisioning a diesel-free future for onroad vehicles hit the headlines recently. But how will this impact the construction industry and how will it adapt? Low Emission Zones provide an insight. This July, the automotive industry was rocked by a far-reaching announcement when Volvo Cars stated that all its new cars would be electric or hybrid from 2019 onwards. The following day, the French government announced it would end sales of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as a way to fight against air pollution. A few weeks later, the British government followed with a similar proposal. But what will these bans mean for the construction industry and off-road vehicles? Construction equipment is largely run on diesel engines and so far, no official announcements have been made concern-

ing their use once these bans come into effect. While decisions are yet to be made on what a dieselfree future means for construction equipment, Low Emission Zones (LEZs) currently provide an insight into how urban construction projects can have a less harmful effect on air quality right now. The Wheels Of Change Air pollution is a contributing factor for hundreds of thousands of premature deaths in Europe each year and diesel emissions have been classified as carcinogenic by the World Health Organization. Therefore, reducing emissions from diesel engines is an important factor for improving health. In areas where air pollution levels are considered dangerously high, Low Emission Zones seek to improve the air quality and make it safer to breathe, by regulating the most polluting vehicles. These LEZs are

almost exclusively found in city centers. The European Union sets emission standards that define the acceptable amount of pollution that can be emitted by the exhaust of a vehicle sold in the EU and EEA member states. Depending on the area, vehicles with higher emissions either cannot enter the area at all, or have to pay a fee if they do. Future Readiness To avoid the expense – real or perceived – of having to pay fees to bring construction machines into restricted areas, construction equipment firms are increasingly being asked by customers to fit a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to machines, to reduce the diesel particulate matter (black soot) from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. “In recent years, there has been a definite upswing in requests for DPFs to be fitted to machines that are working in urban

The End Of The Road For Petrol And Diesel Vehicles Poses New Challenges

development and don’t have them as standard,” says Kurt Deleu, director of regional sales support (Europe) at Volvo CE. “But it’s important to mention, this is not always a clear legal requirement [of working in the LEZ].” If it’s not a legal requirement, why the requests? It seems Volvo CE customers are simply preparing for the future. “DPFs are currently seen as an extra precaution in response to a perceived need to meet regulations in Low Emission Zones,” Deleu adds. “But as regulations around Low Emission Zones continue to become stricter, it’s likely this trend will continue.” Breathe Easy The tricky thing about Low Emission Zone requirements is that they are not harmonized across the EU – and instead are governed by different local and/or country level regulations. For now, construction equipment manufacturers like Volvo CE are dealing with requests for DPFs on machinery on a case-by-case, and countryby-country basis.

“All Volvo CE machines comply with EU emissions regulations, but at present DPFs are only fitted as standard to the EW60E compact wheeled excavator and ECR88D mini-digger and as an option for the ECR58D in the smaller machine category,” confirms Deleu. Meeting the needs of customers remains the highest concern for Volvo CE, which is currently investigating factory solutions for all of its smaller machines. Volvo recently demonstrated the EX2 prototype – a fully electric compact excavator that delivers zero emissions, 10 times higher efficiency and 10 times lower noise levels – at the Volvo Group Innovation Summit in London earlier this year. It is believed to be the world’s first fully electric compact excavator prototype. While the concept machine is purely a research project at this stage, Volvo CE continues to develop technologies connected to electromobility, intelligent machines and total site solutions that benefit customers and the

environment. “Considering the seriousness of air pollution, and the moves governments are making to highlight it, this is an area we believe will continue to be high on the agenda and one we are committed to finding solutions for,” Deleu concludes. b Source: Volvo

Hebron Platform Produces First Oil ExxonMobil Canada has announced that the Hebron platform produced its first oil on November 27. The oil was extracted from the Hebron field in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin, located 350 kilometres offshore of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Our goal since the Hebron project was announced in 2008 was to safely achieve first oil in 2017; today we delivered on our commitment,” says Carman Mullins, president of ExxonMobil Canada. “Hebron is an engineering and construction marvel, and thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can proudly say they helped design and build the platform.” The project achieved more than 40 million hours during construction without a lost-time injury.

vide long-term employment for over 600 personnel and support long-term economic development opportunities for various local supply and service companies for many years to come. The project is also expected to generate millions in annual royalties and taxes for the province during the production phase. It is estimated that the field, first discovered in 1980, will produce more than 700 million barrels of recoverable resources. At peak rates, the Hebron platform will be able to produce up to 150,000 barrels of oil per day, and has storage capacity of 1.2 million barrels of oil. ExxonMobil Canada Properties (35.5 percent) is the operator of the Hebron project. Its coventurers are Chevron Canada Limited (29.6 percent), Suncor Energy Inc. (21 percent), Statoil Canada Ltd. (9 percent) and Nalcor Energy-Oil and Gas Inc. (4.9 percent). For more information about the Hebron project visit: www.hebron project.com. b

Since the project was sanctioned in December 2012, Hebron has been a significant contributor to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has provided direct employment and training to thousands of NL residents, including more than 7,500 personnel during peak construction. Hundreds of contractors and subcontractors throughout the province supplied materials and services to the project. The completed platform was towed to the field in early June 2017, following its construction at Bull Arm, NL. The platform was then safely set down, and drilling commenced within 30 days. Drilling and production operations mark the start of the next phase of the Hebron journey. The project is expected to pro- Source: Hebron Project
