By Sue McGregor, Managing Director of Canada, IronPlanet When disposing of used heavy equipment, relying on the local market doesn’t always offer a seller the highest profit, and at the end of the day, sellers want to recover as much of their original investment as possible. For heavy equipment owners in North America, looking for buyers beyond their surrounding area can help drive more successful sales. So where do these potential buyers reside? How can sellers ensure a smooth transaction? It’s important to look at construction activity and demand around the world to better understand global selling opportunities. Equipment demand in the Middle East Certain areas in the Middle East have witnessed strong growth in construction activity over the last few years. For instance, from 2006 to 2007, Dubai was considered the tower

crane capital of the world, with some suggesting that a fourth or even a third of the world’s tower cranes were at work there.1 Dubai is once again witnessing a construction boom. Residential construction projects are expected to increase throughout 2014. Commercial projects will also be on the rise over the next five years following the announcement that Dubai has secured itself as the location for Expo2020. This world’s fair will attract around 18 million foreign visitors from October 2020 to April 2021.2 This growth period will result in the transportation of more heavy equipment, like cranes, excavators and dozers, into Dubai. Construction activity in Central and South America From a plan to improve Costa Rica’s road infrastructure to a $350 million highway project in Guatemala, road construction is steady throughout Central

July 2014 and South America. This results in an ongoing demand for equipment. However, despite this demand, many equipment buyers in these areas have a hard time finding a readyto-work machine that fits their exact needs. Although a lot of used equipment from the U.S. and Canada is kept in good condition, this is not always the case. Equipment south of the U.S. border is typically worked harder and for longer periods of time because labor to maintain the equipment is more readily available and cost effective. This results in an overabundance of aged, over-utilized machines that need extensive repairs, which buyers are reluctant to purchase. Avoiding local market issues with online auctions Online auctions with a global reach eliminate local market issues for both buyers and sellers. With auctions just a keystroke away, equipment sellers can dispose of equipment from where it sits, at a faster pace and on their own schedule. Sellers based in North America no longer Continued on page 5

have to hope for a willing buyer in their immediate area. By selling online, they can reach buyers from around the world, resulting in more bids and higher profits. They also don’t have to transport equipment long distances to physical auctions, which wastes both time and money. Buyers in the Middle East and Central and South America who are

looking for low-hour, well-maintained equipment can find an abundance from sellers in the U.S. and Canada. Rather than waiting to find the right machine in their area, they can search from a wide selection of equipment online and have it transported directly from a seller’s site to their own. Additionally, buyers who are not required to operate newer Tier 4 equipment can easily find Tier

2 and Tier 3 machines via online auctions. With so many choices, buyers may even discover new models or manufacturers. Inspection reports with detailed information about the equipment’s condition and features can help buyers make educated purchasing decisions. Buyers should look for a marketplace that offers guaranteed inspection reports to ensure a smooth transaction. With online auctions, the distance between a buyer and seller is no longer an inconvenience. Increasingly, projects in the Middle East and Central and South America will rely on used equipment from other parts of the world, including North America. Sellers in the U.S. and Canada who take good care of their equipment can take advantage of this global demand and maximize the value of their used assets in a fast and convenient manner. b

Ontario Envirothon Program Inspires Ontario Youth Recently, the top 15 Ontario Envirothon schools from across the province competed for the title of Ontario Envirothon Champion at Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario. The Ontario Envirothon is a unique program that engages teams of students to learn more about the natural world around them through direct experience in the outdoors. Students participated in outdoor workshops in 20 different regions across the province, all mentored by professionals working in natural resources. The top team from each region came together for the Ontario Envirothon Championship, May 12-15. “The Envirothon program gives students the opportunity to explore nature and gain a fuller appreciation for the outdoors and the importance of our natural environment,” said Rob Keen, CEO of Forests Ontario, the organization responsible for the Ontario

Envirothon. “The Championship allows students from across the province to come together to share their ideas and work collaboratively to present solutions for complex problems facing our environment and learn how they can make changes in their own lives to help lessen environmental impacts.” Keen adds that the Ontario Envirothon often connects students to future career opportunities. “Having the opportunity to interact with and learn from experienced professionals throughout the competition, students are exposed to the incredible range of rewarding careers available in forestry and natural resource management. Many past participants developed a strong passion for our natural environment through the Ontario Envirothon and never looked back. We expect this year to be no different. “ Tied with year-long curriculum, the students at the

Ontario Envirothon Championship took part in the final weeklong event where they explored the Fleming College Frost Campus to learn more about the natural environment through interactive workshops and testing. Students also gave back to the college and the local community through a project focused on enhancing the existing community garden on campus, including making it wheelchair accessible. Finally, students learned more about local and sustainable agriculture by restoring gardening beds, planting trees, and maintaining trails on the campus. The objective of Ontario Envirothon goes beyond learning about the environment, and shows students how to make positive change and how to lead by example within their own communities, now and into the future. This year’s Ontario Envirothon Champion is University of Toronto Schools from Toronto, who outcompeted 15 other teams from across the province. Ashbury College from Ottawa and Roland Michener High School from South Porcupine placed second and third respectively. b

Kobelco Opens New Dealerships In South America Kobelco Construction Machinery, a leading crawler excavator manufacturer, continues to make progress towards penetrating the South American market with the signing of 8 new dealers covering 13 countries. The addition of these dealerships will help Kobelco continue to grow their presence in South America. “Kobelco excavators were marketed in South America as yellow machines by CNH for a 10-year period. As such, the Kobelco name is relatively new, as is the new blue-green paint color introduced last year. We’ve been working diligently to establish an independent dealer network since the relaunch of Kobelco as an independent brand in 2013,” states Joao Luis Oliveira, District Business Manager for Kobelco in Latin America. “Representation through these dealers is helping us establish a strong foundation to build upon in the coming

months and years.” While Kobelco excavators are considered a relatively new excavator brand in Latin America, the Japanese brand has a rich history and legacy of researching and developing many of today’s leading excavator technologies. By focusing on a single line of equipment and dedicating its research and development dollars to improving and enhancing this singular line, the company has become known as excavator perfectionists, ensuring they deliver excavators that can withstand the day-today rigors of demanding jobsites, while providing operators with all the production and comfort features required for a profitable days work. The new dealerships signed include: Andesminerals SAC covering Chile, EXCAVANDO SAS covering Colombia, ICMA Cia. Ltda. covering Ecuador, Grupo DISAGRO. S.A. covering Guatemala, Costa

July 2014 Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador, FIORAZIO de Panama / MEGAMAQ covering Panamá, Guytrac covering Guyana and Surinam, Inversora VG&V, C.A. covering Venezuela and Oro Verde S.A. covering Paraguay. In addition to adding dealerships, Kobelco continues to expand their field service team in South America. All new dealerships will be provided with professional sales, service and product support training to help deliver on Kobelco’s promise of customer satisfaction. Kobelco has long been recognized for its world class line of excavators in the 1,400 kg to 84,000 kg classes for the rental, landscape, construction, aggregate, roadbuilding, material handling, site preparation, recycling and ancillary markets, including zero tail swing, standard, longreach and compact models. Kobelco machines are wellknown for their advanced technologies, including an innovative noise and dust reduction system, advanced hydraulic circuitry for reduction of pressure loss and superior fuel efficiency. b

Linden Comansa Bringing Up Canada’s Healthcare Hospitals The Government of Quebec has launched an ambitious plan to redevelop and modernize its healthcare system, with the purpose of giving both patients and workers the environment they deserve. To make it possible, it has established a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with two universities, with whom it will build Canada’s two biggest hospitals. For both projects, and another two hospitals in Montreal, a total of fourteen Flat-Top tower cranes from the Spanish manufacturer Linden Comansa are being used. All the cranes are provided from distributor Linden-Comansa Canada (Location Comansa), who has rented them to associated sister company Alliance Formwork, the main formwork contractor for all these projects. Doosan Adds Wedge Lock Coupler Attachment Doosan has released the wedge lock coupler for use with the company’s 6- to 53-metric-ton crawler excavators. This new attachment expands the Doosan coupler line, which currently includes the hydraulic quick coupler. The new wedge lock coupler manual mounting system is approved for use with 13 crawler-excavator models including the DX63-3, DX85R-3, DX140LC-3, DX140LCR-3, DX180LC-3, DX225LC-3, DX235LCR, DX255LC-3, DX300LC-3, DX350LC-3, DX420LC-3, DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3. The wedge lock coupler allows operators to change their excavator attachments without the need for addi-

tional hydraulics, but does not decrease a machine’s breakout force. The new coupler has a limited increase in tip radius over pinon mounting. The versatile wedge lock coupler is designed to allow for the use of multiple attachments, such as Doosan’s line of heavy-duty digging buckets. It also mounts the company’s current offering of trenching buckets and is capable of efficiently releasing high-capacity bucket models. The new coupler will also pair with Doosan’s excavator clamp attachments. The wedge lock coupler’s swing ear design and the use of a bolt retainer safety plate helps prevent attachments from falling. b

there were three Linden Comansa cranes before. A 21LC210 has been dismantled recently by the 21LC400, which was used for the erection of the 21LC290 as well. The main work of the cranes, all of

them with maximum load of 18 tons, is to hoist pieces of formwork and assist in the work of concreting. According to Simon Houle, Eng. Project Management Director for Alliance Formwork, “the use of Flat-Top tower cranes allowed us to limit the total height of all cranes, thus increasing the security of the entire project by providing better visibility of the jobsite to the crane operators, and saving a huge amount of money in installation and dismantling”. The Glen Campus The McGill University Health Centre (also known as MUHC, or CUSM in French) is Montreal’s other major hospital network, and since 2010 has been

Among all procedures, the construction of the Glen Campus stands out, which is an enormous complex that will open in 2014 and will fully integrate patient care, research, teaching and technology. It will host 6 different institutions, among them two hospitals for children, a Research Institute and a Cancer Centre. Out of the 13 cranes used on site, 5 have been Flat-Tops from Linden Comansa. Nova Scotia And Woodland Owners Work Together The government of Nova Scotia and private landowners in Cape Breton launched a pilot project on May 5th in Port Hawkesbury that will help woodland owners become more innovative.

Government funding during the first year will be about $500,000 and will decrease to $250,000 per year once the partnership is fully established. “Forestry has changed Continued on page 11

and we need to identify new markets, new technologies and new products,” said Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill. “Woodland owners are keen to move their industry forward.” The Cape Breton Privateland Partnership will be a one-stop approach that helps landowners and forest-management contractors develop and share best forest management practices. The partnership will also give them access to a database of woodlands and contractors, and technical support from forestry professionals. Members will have free access to online tools that provide them with a snapshot of what is on their woodland. This will put woodland owners in a

better position to manage their resource. Harvesters and forest-management contractors will use the tools to schedule woodland projects, and landowners will be able to search a database of contractors when they want work done. “I recently purchased a woodlot in Cape Breton and feel that this new initiative brings a mix of knowledgeable support and accountability to our industry,” said Bill Oprel, of Little Narrows, Victoria Co. “I think a lot of woodlot owners will appreciate the options the partnership opens up for all of us. It gives us confidence that woodlots will be managed in a sustainable way.” “We have put a lot of effort into making sure we are providing services that will

benefit all woodlot owners,” said Cape Breton Privateland Partnership Manager Kari Easthouse. “Our woodlots on Cape Breton are a very important part of our economy, our heritage and our natural environment. We want to maintain these values in the future, and we believe the best way to do that is to provide woodlot owners with the help they need.” Members of the Nova Scotia Landowners and Forest Fibre Producers Association, North Inverness Forest Management and the Baddeck Valley Wood Producers can join the Cape Breton Privateland Partnership for $200 and it will cost $25 a year to maintain their membership. Woodland owners who are not members of these organizations can also join the partnership. b

esigned and built by Tigercat, the new heavy duty F195T85 crane is capable of lifting 20 to 30% heavier loads and has 22 to 66% more slew

torque than any other competing crane on the market. The crane geometry is optimized for quick loading and unloading cycles with excellent grapple clearance

above the load. It is also the only crane that can handle a 0.53 m2 grapple, a great advantage in smaller diameter log applications. The F195T85 is the only

crane with standard endof-position dampening sensors on the stick and main booms to prevent impact loads. The tapered roller bearing in the slew base

is designed to last the life of the machine, a vast improvement over the plain bearing and spherical rollers used in other cranes. It is also the only crane with swivels on the pillar hoses for extended hose life, thick walled bushings used at all pivots and a cushioned telescopic cylinder. The new Tigercat 430 and 530 series grapples compliment the new crane with larger load area capacities at 0.43 m2 and 0.53 m2 respectively. The grapples are fitted with thick walled bushings for extended service

life. The link has a patent pending hose routing design to better protect the hoses and the swing dampener has been specially designed for heavy duty application. Prototype testing of the new crane and grapple design has been ongoing in northern Uruguay in one of the most demanding and arduous forwarder applications imaginable. The first two assemblies have clocked over 2,000 hours since November 2013, working in extremely large diameter 5m eucalyptus logs and 7m pulp logs. b

Shriners hospitals welcome children with special conditions (burns, orthopedic needs, spinal cord injuries, etc) and their families, regardless of whether the patient can afford the treatment.

10 Safety Tips For Operating Aerial Lifts In honour of OSHA’s National Fall Prevention Stand-Down, June 2 – 6, Terex AWP is providing the following safety tips for operating aerial lift equipment. “Fatalities caused by falls from elevation continue to be a leading cause of death for construction workers, accounting for 269 of the 775 construction fatalities recorded in 2012. Those deaths could have been preventable,” said Scott Owyen, Global Training Manager, Terex Aerial Work Platforms (AWP). The following operating tips are critical steps that a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) operator can take to reduce the likelihood of a potentially deadly fall from height. 1) Make sure that you have received proper training (both general training and hands-on practical training) as well as familiarization on the MEWP you will be using. Thoroughly read the operator’s manual and safety signs on the machine, and under-

stand the function and location of all safety devices and controls before beginning operation. 2) Always read, understand and obey employer’s safety rules and worksite regulations, as well as all applicable local, governmental or provincial regulations that apply to MEWP operation before operating the machine. 3) Always perform a pre-operation inspection and function tests on the MEWP before each shift. A level sensor, alarm or any other safety device cannot do its job if it has been disabled or has malfunctioned. If the machine fails any of these tests, make sure it is immediately tagged and removed from service until it can be repaired by a qualified service technician. 4) Always perform a workplace risk assessment prior to moving the MEWP to the jobsite. Look for drop-offs and holes, slopes, slippery or unstable surfaces, overhead obstacles, power lines and any other

Ontario Moving Forward With High Speed Rail Plans Ontario is moving forward with plans for a high speed rail line that would connect London, KitchenerWaterloo and Toronto to improve travel options, reduce travel times and support economic development. The province is committing to finalizing the business case and beginning an environmental assessment for the line by fall 2014.

This includes identifying the most appropriate route and examining state-ofthe-art transportation technology options to better connect residents and businesses between London and Toronto. Introducing high speed rail service between London and Toronto is part of the government’s longterm transit and infrastruc-

hazards that may exist. Then consciously think about and avoid those hazards through all phases of machine operation. A full list of hazards you need to be aware of can be found in the operator’s manual for the machine you are operating. 5) Always wear the proper fall protection when operating either a telescopic or articulating boom. A properly fitted full body harness and appropriate lanyard or self-retracting lifeline is an absolute requirement. Most operators do not understand the potential for being catapulted from the platform of a boom. The slightest jar at the base of the machine can equate into a sudden and powerful whiplash at the platform that may have the potential to toss the operator into the air. If this were to happen, wearing the proper fall protection may reduce the chances of serious injury or even death. 6) Never sit, stand or climb on the platform ture plan, Moving Ontario Forward. This plan would make nearly $29 billion available over the next 10 years for investments in priority infrastructure projects across the province, including public transit, roads, bridges and highways. Building modern infrastructure is part of the government’s economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths — its people and strategic partnerships. b

The new building will replace the current hospital in 2015, which is much smaller and has no space to grow. It will also be affiliated with the Glen Campus, and will have access to its services and will participate in its research. For its construction, LindenComansa Canada is using a 21LC290 tower crane, with maximum load capac-

ity of 18 tons and height of 69.8 meters, and a LC5211 with maximum load of 5 tons and a height under hook of 56 meters. Furthermore, the 21LC290 tower crane was used to erect the LC5211. Linden-Comansa Canada The presence of the Linden Comansa tower cranes in all four projects is thanks to rental company Linden-

Comansa Canada’s sister company Alliance Formwork, who is the main formwork contractor in all these projects. The company was founded in 2001, but was renamed LindenComansa Canada in 2003, when it joined the Linden Comansa family under the umbrella of Linden Comansa America, main dealer in

guardrails for any reason. The guardrails on a MEWP provide fall protection only if the operator maintains a firm footing on the platform floor at all times. If an operator is required to reach an overhead work area that is too small for the platform guardrails to allow access to, the use of a manufacturer-approved device that has been specifically designed to provide additional access to confined spaces is recommended. 7) Never exit an elevated boom or scissor lift platform unless you have been properly trained to do so, maintain 100% tie-off at all times, and are in possession of an approval letter from the manufacturer that

provides the proper guidance. 8) Never climb down from the platform when it is raised. Whenever possible, keep a cell phone or two-way radio with you while you are in the platform. Always have a rescue plan in place in the event that the MEWP is not equipped with an auxiliary lowering system or if that system malfunctions. Rescue plans should at a minimum include steps to ensure that other personnel are aware that you are operating the MEWP and that they have been trained and familiarized to operate the machine from the ground controls. 9) Always keep the platform floor clear of debris.

Scrap materials, buckets, large tool boxes and other items can cause a serious tripping hazard. You should remove any item from the platform that is not absolutely necessary to do your work. Utilize special manufacturer-approved attachments such as fluorescent tube caddies or panel cradles (where applicable) to lift large or bulky items. 10) Always lower the platform entry mid-rail or close the entry gate before operating the MEWP. The entry mid-rail or gate is an integral part of the platform guardrail. Never tape or prop the entry open and never use a MEWP if the gate does not properly latch. b

North America. The company has a large and complete fleet of Linden Comansa tower cranes, and offers full

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · www.supplypost.com service (rental, erection/ dismantling, technical support, engineering, etc) mainly in the Quebec area, although their cranes have travelled almost coast to

coast, from Edmonton (Alberta) to Halifax (Nova Scotia). The erection crew of Linden-Comansa Canada likes the easiness of erec-

tion and dismantling of the Linden Comansa cranes, resulting in work done in a safe manner and the accomplishment of tight schedules.

Page 15

This ease of assembling and dismantling, the modular design, and the capability of the cranes to resist in a country where temperatures go from minus

35 in winter to plus 35 in summer, were some of the advantages that allowed Linden-Comansa Canada to choose Linden Comansa tower cranes. b

New Brunswick Remains One Of Top Destinations For Mining Investment The mining policy in New Brunswick is considered to be the secondbest in Canada and the seventh-best in the world, according to the latest Survey of Mining Companies prepared by the Fraser Institute. “New Brunswick continues to be among the best-ranked jurisdictions in the world for mining and exploration,” said Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard. Leonard is part of a provincial government delegation attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada International Convention in Toronto. The delegation has been promoting New Brunswick as an ideal place in which to conduct mineral exploration and development. “Convention attendees have been telling us since our arrival that New Brunswick is a great place in which to do business,” said Leonard. The Fraser Institute report was released March 3 on the opening day of the convention. It placed New Brunswick immediately ahead of Newfoundland and Labrador and behind only Alberta as the Canadian jurisdiction having the best mining policy. New Brunswick, ranked among the top 10 jurisdictions internationally for the second consecutive year, placing immediately ahead of Nevada, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Norway and behind only Sweden, Finland, Alberta, Ireland, Wyoming and Western Australia. “A great deal of optimism surrounds the mining sector in the province,” said Leonard. “The availability of financing is improving, which is good news. Mining generates investment, employment and royalties. It will have a significant impact on our

efforts to rebuild the New Brunswick economy.” The Fraser Institute has conducted an annual survey of mining and exploration companies since 1997. It assesses how mineral endowments and public policy such as taxation and regulation affect exploration investment. Survey results represent the opinions of executives and exploration managers in mining and mining consulting companies around the world. The survey includes data on 112 jurisdictions on every continent except Antarctica, including sub-national jurisdictions in Canada, Australia, the United States and Argentina. “New Brunswick has a rich mining history and is home to world-class mineral deposits,” said Leonard. Forty-eight companies hold mineral claims in New Brunswick and many of them are actively exploring. Many projects are undergoing environmental impact assessments or are the subject of feasibility studies. Of note is the Northcliff Resources’ Sisson Project, a tungsten and molybdenum mine projected to be the largest mine in New Brunswick in terms of daily ore production. This project is expected to employ 300 New Brunswickers for 27 years. Other projects set to take off in the near future include PotashCorp’s Picadilly Potash Expansion in the Sussex area and Trevali’s restart of the Caribou lead-zinc mine near Bathurst. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada International convention, held annually in Toronto, is considered the world’s leading mineral exploration meeting. This year’s event attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors and nearly 30,150 participants from 126 countries. b
