Safe & Sound Shipping Thanks To Brigade’s Broadband Alarms In response to complaints from local residents, Port of Montréalbased shipping container terminal operator, Termont, found a fitting solution to its noise abatement issue – one that also increased its onsite safety. Brigade Electronics Canada recently kitted out Montréal container terminal operator Termont’s entire vehicle fleet with 97 of its white noise BBSTek broadband sound backup alarms; as part of a noise abatement exercise; which resulted in optimized safety. Termont has been operating the port’s Maisonneuve Terminal for over 25 years. It’s in constant operation – providing cargo and container handling services for both import and exports. However, following recent complaints from neighbouring residents, Termont conducted a noise study; finding that some of their vehicles’ warning alarms were the
immediate vicinity of a vehicle are alerted to danger; which is exactly what we needed.” Using a mixture of 107dB alarms for their transtainers and adjustable 87-107 dB alarms for the rest of the fleet, BBS-Tek alarms are compatible with a huge variety of vehicles; and are now installed right across Termont’s fleet of cars, pickups, stackers, and yard tractors. Henry Morgan, Director & CEO, Brigade Canada said, “Noise pollution itself is a health and safety issue. Not just from an overall environmental standpoint, but in terms of risk reduction. Being able to distinguish between a nearby vehicle and one that’s approaching that poses a risk is paramount, and narrowband tonal beepers only adds to confusion on a busy jobsite. “Termont has a clear commitment to both its employees and its local community, and I applaud their initiative for finding a solution that benefits all.” b
root of the problem. In order to reduce their noise footprint it was clear they needed to find a new technology. After researching potential solutions, Termont decided to undertake a trial using Brigade’s BBS-Tek alarms. As part of this trial, the Termont team conducted a secondary study to judge the efficacy of the alarms and confirmed that the alarms were effective in both reducing noise complaints and keeping their employees safe. Jonathan Paris, EHS Director, Termont, said “On a typical day, there’s an abundance of noise coming from a lot of different vehicles. Some of it is unavoidable, but warning alarm sound carries across a broad area. That’s why we decided to opt for white noise alarms. Broadband sound is directional, so only those in the most Source: Brigade

Top Five Tech To Make Construction Safer
Rated 9.1 out of 10
As one of the most hazardous industries in the world, it’s no surprise that construction workers need to take care every day on the job. The complex nature of construction sites means they can be a health and safety nightmare – electricity cables, moving objects, working at height, not to mention the multiple movements of some serious heavy construction equipment. Safety is a top priority for any company and a multitude of rules and regulations are in place to ensure workers are kept free from harm, but accidents still happen. But coming to the rescue is a technology-driven safety
revolution, with advances being made every day. Here we look at the ways in which innovations are helping to make construction sites a safer place to be. 1. Boost Manpower With Robotics In the old days only tough strong men were thought to be able to work in construction. But even tough guys can trigger painful muscle damage from lifting heavy tools – and construction is a major offender with the rate of work-related musculoskeletal disorders 16% higher than in any other industry. But as automation takes off, robots are now being employed on sites to do the
Doosan Introduces New Authorized Dealer In Ottawa At the company’s 2018 Rental Summit Allied Vendor Fair and Reception, Cat Rental Stores have named Genie, a Terex brand, as the Cat Rental Store 2017 Vendor of the Year. The criteria for the award are quality, product support and policy, ease of doing business and overall vendor satisfaction. This is the first year the Cat Rental Store Vendor of the Year award has been given. “I am very pleased to bestow Genie with the honor of our 2017 Vendor of the Year,” says Erica Baird, Global Allied Product Manager, Global Rental &
June 2018 heavy lifting. Where once it would take six or seven workers to carry a 200kg reinforcing rod, for example, Japanese constructor Shimizu has invented a robotic arm to take the load. This machine aims to do the job in half the time with half the effort – and cut the risk of worker injury at the same time. As well as taking on the repetitive tasks likely to cause strain, robot workers can even be tasked with handling hazardous materials or entering dangerous work zones – all under the watchful eye of a human supervisor. Also in Japan, a team of researchers have created a rescue robot – a hydraulic technology that, once fully developed, could be deployed on construction sites to fully assess a dangerous situation. 2. Stay Connected & Avoid Falls Slips and trips are the most common source of injury on UK construction sites – causing a third of accidents. Meanwhile, across the pond a sobering 40% of fatalities on site are caused by tripping or falling. Prevention is key – keeping walkways clear of obstructions, ensuring all structures are in good working order, putting equipment away after use and wearing the proper kit will help keep workers on their feet. Clever technology such as the Spot-r Clip, which can Continued on page 7
Genie, a leading, global manufacturer of aerial lift equipment, was recognized for its ongoing commitment to provide the highest overall value to Cat Rental Store dealers and, most importantly, to Cat Rental Store customers. “It is a privilege to receive this prestigious recognition from Caterpillar,” says Paul Smith, Genie National Accounts Manager, Terex AWP. “At Genie, we are committed to the success of our customers’ businesses, from delivering highquality aerial lift equipment to our responsive support after the sale. We take great pride in providing Cat Rental Stores the products, services and programs they need to meet the growing and changing needs of their customers.” b
Used Equipment Services, Caterpillar Inc. “The Cat Rental Stores have distinguished Genie as an exceptional vendor, committed to providing our dealers with quality products and support, to ensure our customers’ success from the start to the finish of any project or job. We look forward to growing our long and successful relationship with Genie!” According to Baird, at the end of last year, Caterpillar worked with its dealers to determine the key attributes required to be recognized as the Cat Rental Stores Vendor of the Year. simply attach to a belt, records any trips and immediately alerts supervisors. Just a push of a button will also report a hazard without anyone having to leave the site. With a third of workers concerned that safety takes a backseat to productivity, tech like this is proving that the two are no longer mutually exclusive. 3. Keep It Down! Construction workers are exposed to high levels of noise on an almost daily basis, triggering hearing problems ranging from mild tinnitus to disabling deafness. Not only that, but exposure could also affect workers’ mental health. As a comparison, an office environment may range from 40-50 dB whereas construction sites endure levels considerably greater, with 90 dB. Given that a minor adjustment of just 3 dB is noticeable to human ears, excessive noise can be a huge problem. Technology such as noise cancelling headphones has been available for years, but innovations are continuing to be developed. Volvo Construction
Equipment has conceived a machine for the future where excavators, haulers and wheel loaders can generate significantly less noise. The company’s concept research prototype EX2 100% electric compact excavator, for example, would be able to produce 10 times lower noise levels. 4. Reach New Heights With Mobile Apps While surface trips are the most common cause of injury, falling from a height is the most common cause of death in the US. And with falls from ladders costing the nation $24 billion a year in work loss and medical bills, the safe and proper use of equipment when preparing to work at heights goes a long way to reducing accidents. Telematics like the NIOSH Ladder Safety App provide visual and audio cues to help workers know exactly when their ladders are positioned at the safest angle of 75.5 degrees. It also allows for more precise inspections of the ladder and provides tips for planning the task in hand. 5. Arm Workers With Vibration-Busting Tech One of the most over-
looked threats to construction workers is hand-arm vibration syndrome – with about 1 million US workers said to suffer from the condition. It’s also estimated that 10% of workers will show symptoms after 12
years of consistent exposure. Caused by the prolonged use of power hand tools, which damage the blood vessels and nerves, it’s an incurable disease that can only be combatted through prevention. Wear-

able technology however can help reduce the risk. Monitoring bands such as HAVWEAR keep a record of a worker’s day-to-day activity and highlights when they are at risk of exposure, allowing a supervi-
Vermeer Introduces The D8x12 Navigator Horizontal Directional Drill Vermeer expands its line of utility installation equipment with the launch of the D8x12 Navigator horizontal directional drill. This new compact and highly productive drill is sized for working in tight spaces, features straightforward controls and delivers quiet operation. With two drill rod options for added versatility, the Vermeer D8x12 is well suited for small service installations, including gas distribution, power, water and telecommunication networks. “From fiber-to-the-home projects to residential utility upgrades, there is a
growing demand for compact horizontal directional drills that can easily access residential backyards, are lightweight to help reduce turf damage and quiet to minimize neighbour disturbances,” explained Tod Michael, product manager of trenchless products at Vermeer. “With the D8x12, we were able to exceed contractors’ expectations in all of those areas and more. It’s an affordable serviceoriented machine that is over 29 percent more powerful than similarly sized drills on the market today.” The Vermeer D8x12 horizontal directional drill

While on the job, the D8x12 drill’s tracks provide optimized traction for operations with little ground disturbance. With a forward travel speed of 2.8 mph (4.5 km/h), this compact drill can quickly be repositioned between bores. The Vermeer D8x12 also gives contractors multiple drill rod options. Choose a 1.31” (3.4 cm) diameter Firestick® drill rod when tight steering is required, or 1.66” (4.2 cm) diameter drill rod for more demanding ground conditions and longer drill shots. In addition, it can share tooling with several current and previous Vermeer drill models, including the D6x6, D7x11 Series II, D9x13 S3 and D10x15 S3 Navigator horizontal directional drills. b

Komatsu Forest Acquired Oryx Simulations
ESCO AND LSW – A Winning Combination lswwearparts.com
Fredericton, NB 506-458-5613
Truro, NS 902-895-4913
Komatsu Forest and Oryx Simulation share a long history. During the 1990s a project was started by Komatsu Forest and Umeå University that was the starting point for Oryx Simulations. During the years Komatsu Forest has been a customer to the company. Today Komatsu Forest sells simulators, developed by Oryx Simulations, all over the world. Now the cooperation is further deepened when Komatsu Forest acquires the company. “Oryx Simulations is a very interesting company that we have had the opportunity to follow closely as a customer. They are a cutting-edge technology company in their industry and the simulators they develop have received very good response among their users due to their high fidelity and lifelike graphics. Training is significantly facilitated by these simulators and we see that Oryx Simula-
tions has a great potential for further growth”, says Annelie Persson, Press Officer Komatsu Forest. After the acquisition Oryx Simulations will continue their business as usual as an independent company and the customers will not experience any changes. Both companies consider it a very important part of the acquisition that Oryx Simulations maintains its independence and integrity for continued trust among its customers. “It’s an honour to get this confirmation by a major customer, that they are paying attention to our technology and wants to own us,” Rami Morssy, CEO Oryx Simulations says. “It is also very positive that Komatsu Forest cares that we increase growth and keep our independence and business as usual,” Morssy concludes. b Source: Komatsu

When Blake Stanley graduated from college, he immediately joined the new metals recycling company that his grandfather, Ronnie Strange, had started up just months before. Strange launched the business with the help of two other partners, and Blake soon learned that who you know is often as important as what you know, to get a new enterprise off the ground. CRC was well equipped for local business with its 750-ton logger/baler/shear and a rubber tired material handler. Building the firm’s supply of whole cars, industrial scrap and residential retail scrap, Blake became active in his local community, in Duncan, SC, and he currently serves as President of South Carolina Recyclers Association, Inc. (SCRA). Building on trust When the yard encountered problems with an orange peel grapple, Blake reached out to a fellow member of the SCRA: Rob Jordan, the
June 2018 offloading trucks at one end of the yard, a new Sennebogen 825 M now feeds the shear and handles loading duties for outbound trucks. “Our crew appreciates the maintenance access they get on the Sennebogen and the fact that it uses minimal electronics. It’s built heavier than our other unit. And our operators appreciate having the lights on the boom for a better look at their loads.” Blake acknowledges that, as a smaller operation, he and his team all wear a lot of hats. However, he found that Jordan was able to help with one of his other key positions, too. Ever safety conscious, he took a lead role in organizing an OSHA training event, sponsored jointly by SCRA and its counterpart in North Carolina. Conveniently, Jordan arranged for the event to be hosted at Sennebogen’s North America head office near Charlotte, NC. The 100,000 sq. ft. Sennebogen facility includes a fully equipped Training Center. Complete with classrooms and demonstration displays, the Center is actually built around a three-level service bay built for handson indoor instruction on complete machines. Ascendum is continuing to work with CRC, providing ongoing maintenance service to the equipment. Like the people at CRC, the new 825 M is proving to be comfortable wearing many hats. “Loading or unloading, sorting and feeding the shear, it’s a very diverse machine for us.” b
Sennebogen material handling specialist for nearby Ascendum Machinery, Inc. “We were getting frustrated, then Rob came in and sold us a new Sennebogen grapple that we’ve never had any issues with,” Blake recalls. “At that point, we knew we could trust Rob, and if we had a problem, that he would take care of it.” CRC’s business did keep growing. After a few years of operation, Strange acquired full ownership of CRC from his partners. Blake, his grandfather and Kevin Land, Operations Manager, decided that a second material handler was needed on the site. “As a young company, we wanted to learn more about different equipment,” says Blake. “We were ready to look at a different OEM. Based on our relationship with Rob Jordan, we gave him a call and his team from Ascendum Machinery came up with the right equipment for the job.” Wearing many hats While their original machine stays busy Source: Sennebogen

Companies Bring AI And Automation To The Construction Industry The construction industry has some problems: a chronic labour shortage, falling productivity, and an industry that remains dangerous. A new company called Built Robotics wants to tackle those problems by developing software and sensors that can transform off-the-shelf excavators into machines that autonomously dig precise holes for hours without a break. Founded by Noah Ready-Campbell, Built Robotics, which is headquartered in San Francisco and recently went public, has been stealthily operating a retrofitted skid steer, using a computer program to direct it and move it around dirt. “… We kept coming back to one realization: we need a new way to build,” the company says on its website. “With that mission in mind, we came up with a simple idea. Let’s take the latest sensors from
self-driving cars, retrofit them into proven equipment from the jobsite, and develop a suite of autonomous software designed specifically for the requirements of construction and earthmoving.” Other companies have created kits that convert construction equipment into remotely operated vehicles, but the Built Robotics system is intended to be autonomous. In a company video, a father and daughter watch as the robot prepares the foundation for their new house, including stopping work when they walk nearby, then starting again when they are out of the way. Using Built Robotics’ software, a contractor can geofence a project to ensure that the machine doesn’t go out of bounds. Following that, a contractor can “program in the exact parameters and where to move the dirt.” According to Ready-
Campbell, having machines that can perform these operations autonomously is important because of the lack of skilled labour to “fulfill all the demand for new roads, dams and bridges.” In addition to this reality, a lot of this work for those workers that are capable of performing these tasks is dangerous or boring. “I’ve talked to some operators and they’ve said there are parts of my job that are really dangerous and there are parts of my job that are really boring,” Ready-Campbell told CNBC. “If you can have a robot do those things and I can focus on the parts that really take human judgment, then that’s good for me.” The son of a general contractor, Ready-Campbell says that his father initially wasn’t a fan of the idea of machines doing this type of work autonomously, but he eventually saw the positive aspects of it. “When I first told dad, he reacted pretty negatively. He was like, ‘Why do you want to Continued on page 15

steal these guys’ jobs?’” Ready-Campbell told the Verge. “But after watching the machines in operation, “He’s come around on it.” Ready-Campbell does not know how the technology will be priced as of yet, but he is confident that there are a variety of ways to make money off of the technology, including selling Built Robotics’ sensor kits to manufacturers of these machines, or selling to contractors for retrofits. The technology could also be rented out for projects. In the meantime, Built Robotics will work on expanding its current 10-person staff by hiring engineers. The company will do this using the $15 million it raised from Forest Baskett and Aaron Jacobson at NEA. This money will also be used to get the product ready for commercial adoption, and purchase more machines like excavators and bulldozers. Nvidia And Komtasu Late last year, chipmaker NVIDIA announced that it has teamed with
construction company Komatsu to bring artificial intelligence to construction sites, although in a different way as conceived by Built Robotics. NVIDIA will use its Jetson chip to collect data on machines and people working on construction sites, and incorporate mapping from drones flying overhead, to help make construction safer. The work, part of Komatsu’s SMARTCONSTRUCTION initiative, will let the company create 3-D visualizations of construction sites, showing the real-time interaction of people, machinery and objects. “We’ll start integrating NVIDIA GPUs into our construction sites,” Yuichi Iwamoto, senior executive officer, chief technology officer at Komatsu, said in an NVIDIA announcement. “By leveraging NVIDIA’s experience in image processing, virtualization and AI, we can further transform construction areas into jobsites of the future.” Eventually, however, the companies do foresee using the system to control automated machinery as well.

How Sustainable Building Is Driving Down Costs Is it really possible to ‘green up’ the construction industry while keeping costs at a minimum? Terri Wills, CEO of WorldGBC, makes the business case for sustainability. The construction process is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to global greenhouse emissions. With urbanization increasing in all corners of the world, it’s more important than ever to address these growing social demands while still meeting ambitious low carbon targets. Here we discuss the innovations, technologies and legislation helping to make a positive change. We’re Often Told That Sustainability Costs More. How Can You Make The Business Case For Sustainability? Firstly, there is significant energy usage in the construction process, so if you can find ways to be more energy efficient, you
will become more cost efficient. Consumer demand is having an effect. As more and more companies want to know about the carbon going into the making of a product – what we call ‘embodied carbon’ – the construction sector will have to work to bring down its emissions if it wants to meet this market need. Secondly, 90% of many companies’ costs are people, so if you can find ways to reduce illness and absenteeism by creating a more productive environment, you’re halfway there. Green buildings and living walls foster a sense of health and wellbeing – and you’re also adding economic value by creating a company ethos that employees want to be a part of. What Is Wrong With The Way We Build Today? Managing suppliers and understanding the embodied carbon across the sup-
ply chain, so that everybody is coordinated could make a big difference – and it’s not happening enough. The current diffused responsibility makes green building that much more difficult, but this is also where the opportunity lies. There are great examples like Energiesprong, who will retrofit your house – everything from solar panels to insulation – and deliver you a net zero carbon home. Streamlining the process like this, instead of leaving individuals to coordinate 15 different suppliers, encourages people to aim for zero carbon. Do We Need Legislation To Force A Change? How Can We Incentivize Construction Firms To Drive Down Emissions? Construction companies will want to get ahead of legislation in order to benefit financially in the future. When you have a deal like the Paris Agreement,
where we’re trying to fully decarbonize the construction industry by the middle of the century, companies that have high emissions will be at a disadvantage. Certifications like LEED and BREEAM also set a precise definition of what it means to be a green building. There will come a time when corporations will actually lose economic value if they don’t make these zero carbon pledges. How Does A Building’s Operational Emissions Compare To The Emissions That Are Created In The Construction Process? 28% of energy related global greenhouse gas emissions come from the operations of a building, compared to 11% from the construction process. Interestingly, the operating emissions are actually decreasing because of this shift to renewable energy. At WorldGBC, we have a big push on net zero carbon buildings, which we feel is contributing to this reduction in operating carbon. Does The Carbon Problem Differ Around The World? Absolutely. In emerging economies like China, where the equivalent of Rome is built every week, you have a very different problem than that in Europe or America. While there is still a lot of construction in more developed regions, we tend to focus on retrofitting existing buildings, which has a lower carbon cost. But in newly urbanized areas like Africa, where the pressure to build is so huge there isn’t as much consideration of their emissions profile, carbon reduction can be more difficult to control.
June 2018
Terri Wills with James Jarrett, Director of Commercial Manufacturing at green business Shaw Industries in Georgia USA.
What Technologies And Innovations Are Helping To Drive Down Emissions? There are a lot of innovative things happening. In Iceland they’re able to turn CO2 into stone, converting carbon into a building product. In this way, not only could buildings be zero carbon, but they could actually be regenerative. Modular construction is also an interesting development. If you can build in a factory setting rather than an outdoor environment, you will avoid costly delays caused by outdoor factors like the weather. Technologies employed in the operations of a building – smart meters, connected devices or applications that allow you to tap into renewable energies at particular times of day – are also helping. Does The Choice Of Construction Machinery Influence Carbon
Reduction? Electrification is hugely important. I know that Volvo CE is doing great research around electromobility and creating efficiencies in terms of emissions and cost. In this way, addressing transportation within the construction process will help chip away at carbon emissions. What Is The Biggest Challenge Facing Worldgbc? The challenges differ from country to country, so it’s finding ways to keep our focus on the global goals while working at a local level. In South Africa, for example, they’re focused on reducing emissions, but are in the middle of a water crisis. So, it’s often down to finding effective ways to reprioritize while still implementing targeted carbon reduction plans. b Source: Volvo

• POWER BOOST WITH NO TIME LIMIT • DEDICATED HEAVY LIFT FUNCTION • HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION
DON’T SET LIMITS ON WHAT YOU CAN DO. Most excavators come with a power boost function that can deliver extra force when you need it most – but only for a few seconds at a time. What good does that do when you have a whole day’s work ahead of you? The power boost in KOBELCO excavators provides ~10% more bucket breakout force when you need it, for as long as you need it. They also offer a dedicated heavy lift function that provides ~10% more power when lifting and swinging. Combine that with our heavy-duty construction and you can be sure they’ll never back down from a challenge.

Deere-Hitachi Celebrates 30 Years Of Construction Equipment Joint Venture J
ohn Deere and Hitachi Construction Machinery are proud to celebrate more than three decades of their longstanding joint venture, the Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation. Utilizing united manufacturing facilities and integrated marketing and parts distribution, John Deere and Hitachi are providing more value to customers by producing high-quality products backed by a robust dealer network. Since the start of operations as a joint venture in 1988, Deere-Hitachi has manufactured over 55,000 hydraulic excavators for the North, Central and South American markets. “The 30-year Deere-Hitachi partnership is unlike any other joint venture in the industry, and is a testament to the longstanding mutual respect and dedication of our teams,” said Jon Chase, president of Deere-Hitachi. “Combining the strength of Hitachi’s
world-leading hydraulic excavator technology with the resources and might of the 180-year-old John Deere brand, the alliance produces excavators for the world’s best customers.” As a result of a relationship dating back to the 1960s, Hitachi Construction Machinery and Deere & Company collaborated to reach an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) supply agreement in 1983 for the manufacturing of construction excavators. Since then, three joint venture companies with respective manufacturing facilities were established: Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation in Kernersville, N.C. in 1988; Deere-Hitachi Specialty Products (DHSP) in Langley, British Columbia, Canada in 1998; and Deere-Hitachi Máquinas de Construção do Brasil S.A. (DHB) in Indaiatuba, São Paulo, Brazil in 2011. The 1 million square foot Deere-Hitachi manu-
facturing facility in Kernersville, N.C. brings together the latest in technological innovation and a skilled workforce of over 800 employees to produce bestin-class 13- to 47-metric ton excavator models. The state-of-the-art facility uses high quality materials, advanced welding robotics, CNC machining centers, plasma plate-cutting machines and cranes capable of transporting as much as 25 tons. A lean manufacturing system combined with a thorough quality assurance process enables the facility to produce madeto-order machines with a quick time to market. Elsewhere in the Americas, the Canada and Brazil facilities specialize in producing equipment that meets regional customer needs. Established in 1998, Deere-Hitachi Specialty Products in Langley, British Columbia was the first in the industry to manufacture purpose-built forestry excavators, with a focus on
26- to 46-metric ton forestry swing machines. Serving Latin and Central America, Deere-Hitachi Brazil produces 13- to 35-metric ton excavator models. John Deere and Hitachi integrated marketing operations in 2002 in the Americas to streamline decision making and improve customer service, supporting construction and forestry equipment, as well as Hitachi’s mining equipment. To improve parts fill and respond to urgent customer needs, John Deere and Hitachi use a comprehensive parts distribution system via a network of regional parts depots. To better serve Latin American countries, John Deere and Hitachi recently opened a new 115,000 square foot regional parts distribution center in Miami, Fla. John Deere and Hitachi will be commemorating the anniversary on May 19, 2018 with an employee and parent company celebration day. Over 1,500
