Mobile Solutions For Effective Processing Keestrack, the global specialist for mobile crushing and screening equipment takes CONEXPOCON/AGG 2017 as a perfect opportunity to strengthen its position on the American markets and to present highly flexible solutions for contractors in the recycling and aggregates industry. International product experts at booth C33043 will focus on the latest technical innovations and provide expert information on the expanding Keestrack range of machines Focussing on contractor needs Having earned its early but still lasting reputation as inventor of flexible tracked scalping and screening plants Keestrack changed in the last few years to what is now one of the most successful international full liners of mobile technologies for min-

eral processing. The still growing product range of tracked crushing, classifying and material handling solutions includes today jaws, cones and impactors, a full range of scalpers, horizontal classifiers and drum screens and ancillary equipment as stackers or dust suppression systems. To guarantee continuous development and industry leading quality standards the Belgium based group owns today three international competence centres with integrated R&D and production facilities. Worldwide after sales and customer support is provided through an expanding network of training centres, dealers and service partners in over 50 countries on all continents. Keestrack America was founded ten years ago, to support the expanding dealer network in the North

American markets. The company recently opened a new facility in Dallas/ Texas. Focussing on aftersales and parts activities the new headquarters will form a crucial element of Keestrack’s strategy to become the leading supplier for crushing and screening contractors in the recycling and aggregates industries. The company’s large experience in the respective sectors on major European markets is reflected through a plant portfolio with highly mobile and flexible solutions, which also perfectly responds to the requirements of the growing rental business. Keestrack’s technology is not only characterized by the high mobility between and on sites or its ease of operation – to guarantee economic efficiency and uncompromised end product quality, the company is

also focussing on state-ofthe-art drive technologies and sophisticated processing concepts. Intensive research on sustainable electric drive concepts is only one example – another important field is the consequent use of modern communication technology for remote plant control and maintenance management with the telematics tool “Keestrack-er”. Perfectly adapted on processing environments, the GPS sup-

ibility in secondary or tertiary production of highly defined end fractions. To optimize production the plant can be optionally equipped with a pre-screen with fines chute and – as a world’s first – with a highly efficient three-deck secondary screen module with recycling conveyor for closed-circuit processing. A big feeder volume, large screening areas and high stockpile capacities allow very productive operations as in-line or standalone unit. The Keestrack H4 features a hybrid diesel-electric drive concept (345 kW Diesel (Tier 4f) / 330 kVA Genset / 135 kW E-drive for crusher). This guarantees economic fuel consumption and ease of maintenance through the wide use of electric motors on screens and conveyors. The recently introduced full-hybrid version H4e even allows full electric operation through mains or an external gen set. An additional electric motor/ hydro pump then supplies the hydraulic driven feeder, the secondary screen module, the tracks and all hydraulic cylinders. High production rates

March 2017

and a great versatility regarding materials and end products make impact crushers increasingly the technology of choice for efficient mobile recycling applications. Keestrack recognized this trend very early and optimized its impactor range in terms of transport weights, ease of operation and maintenance. The use of high-strength steel qualities in machine frames and superstructures effectively reduces weight without compromising the static qualities or machine lifetime. Intelligent monitoring and control systems guarantee trouble-free operation even in heterogeneous material mixes. Quick set-up routines, easy access for maintenance and the optimized wear characteristics of Keestrack’s original crusher technology increase the plants deployability and allow cost-effective operations even on short-term projects with smaller volumes. At CONEXPO Keestrack also displays the tracked impactor R3, with max. 33 tons the smallest unit of its impactor range and the 55-tons-unit R5. Both machines feature active pre-screening and will be

shown with full optional equipment, which includes magnetic separators, fines conveyors and secondary screen modules with closed-circuit operation (R3: 1-deck; R5: 2-Deck). Both direct driven crushing units are characterized through large and heavy rotors, which guarantee high crushing energy combined with smooth running. Large inlet openings and efficient overload protection systems ensure productive operation in typical recycling applications without cost-intensive pre-sorting or pulverizing. The machines displayed on CONEXPO-CON/AGG both feature diesel-hydraulic drives with modern load sensing hydraulics. As the larger R6, the R5 can also be equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric drive: A 150 kVA on-board gen set then supplies the electric drives for conveyors and screen modules, offering important fuel saving potentials up to 25% compared to the diesel-hydraulic version. Caterpillar Rolls Out New Machines And Technology At CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2017, Caterpillar will present its extensive line of machines and technology. With 40 machines on display in two different exhibit areas totaling 60,000 square feet, Caterpillar’s presence is among the largest at the show. But it’s not all about size. Cat Connect Technologies for machine control and monitoring will share the spotlight with the iron it enhances—ranging from a skid steer loader to a 96-ton excavator. Eight Cat machines will make their public debut at CONEXPO and a half dozen more machines introduced recently will be on display for the first time at an equipment show. The newest Cat machines to be displayed include excavators, wheel loaders, a dozer, an articulated truck, a telehandler and cold planers. Caterpillar will also introduce new remote control and connectivity technologies at the show. In the large North Hall exhibit, booth 10924, the display will focus on excavating, grading, paving and aggregates mining and handling. The Gold Lot exhibit, booth 4490, will feature small machines used in building construction. A handful of large machines displayed in the Gold Lot will represent general construction and aggregates product lines. New machines to be displayed include the M317F Wheeled Excavator, a compact radius design that expands versatility and enhances productivity in tight work areas. The new Cat compact radius wheeled excavators deliver the same capabilities and efficiencies as their standard radius counterparts. The 390F and 336F XE Excavators, both with crawler undercarriages, have been updated to deliver improved productivity and lower costs. Both excavators lead their size classes in fuel efficiency. The 390F can be equipped with the industry’s only integrated payload system for accurate truck loading. The 336F XE has the payload system as standard equipment, as is 2D GRADE—with the option of a number of integrated Cat Connect grade

March 2017 tem. Wireless connectivity enables the operator to work from a safe location, whether nearby or far away. In addition to the D8T demonstration, a Cat Command remote control system equips a 988K Wheel Loader shown in the Gold Lot exhibit. In addition to the big machines operating via remote control, a live demonstration of skid steer loader line-ofsight remote control will be conducted in the Gold Lot. The full line of Cat paving products is represented at CONEXPO, with emphasis on three new cold planers—PM825, PM622 and PM312. The new PM800 Series complements the previously released PM600 Series and features increased engine power for demanding applications. Increased weight and cooling capacity allow the PM800 Series to perform under the toughest of conditions. The PM300 Series is highly versatile, capable of urban and patchwork applications, small to medium road milling or where compact dimensions, optimum maneuverability and high production capabilities are required. In addition to the big machines, Cat compact and building construction machines will be on display at CONEXPO. The new TH514D Telehandler sports a three-section boom and a Tier 4 Final compliant engine. The 46-ft reach and 11,000-lb lift capacity are ideally suited for pick and place lifting. Cat D Series telehandlers will also offer new, innovative options such as a reverse object detection system, an advanced display screen and a reversing camera. Caterpillar also will present several innovative solutions available across its 14-model line of compact excavators. The 300.9D Versatile Power System (VPS) with H25 Hammer represents an ideal configuration for indoor demolition applications. Another unique solution is the 304.5E2 Extra Tool Carrier (XTC), which includes a skid steer loader coupler interface in place of the traditional dozer blade. control systems. New Cat wheel loaders are also in the CONEXPO spotlight. The new 986K on display will replace the H Series model and deliver lower cost per ton in earthmoving and aggregates operations. The 950 GC will make its North American debut in the Gold Lot, where it will be displayed alongside the full-featured 950M. The 950 GC gives wheel loader owners a choice when determining the best machine for their business. In addition to the 950M, the 972M XE and 982M will be on display to highlight updates including new Cat Connect Technologies, additional operator comfort and safety features, and features that help reduce operating costs. The new 745 Articulated Truck features an all new, class leading cab with enhanced visibility. Innovative machine control features further improve operator efficiency and safety. The new stability assist system reduces the risk of rollovers, and the new Economy Mode reduces fuel consumption. The updated D6T Dozer on display at CONEXPO features a new transmission and new Auto Shift system that allows the D6T to achieve fuel savings on the order of 20 percent, compared with the previous model. Fuel savings can increase to as much as 30 percent in light-load and finish-grading applications. The fully automatic system maintains production while optimizing fuel efficiency. Additionally, the updated D6T now is equipped with GRADE with Slope Assist as standard equipment. Another dozer is featured in a live demonstration shown in the Gold Lot exhibit. A D8T dozer in Peoria, Illinois, will be controlled remotely from the operator station in the exhibit. Volvo Builds Rock-Solid Arena For The World Rally Championship The winter car race, Rally Sweden, partnered with Volvo Construction Equipment dealership Swecon to convert a quarry into the Road to Rock arena for the 2017 World Rally Championship. The World Rally Championship (WRC) is recognized by the International Automobile Federation as the highest class of international rallying, widely referred to as one of the most strenuous driving competitions on the planet. From the snow-capped Argentinian mountains to the evergreen Swedish forests, the WRC spans 13 races in as many countries; each unique, offering its own challenges, but all placing extreme demands on the drivers, cars and teams. Rally Sweden – the only winter race on the circuit – is the largest an-

nual event in Sweden. The three-day event, which is held every February in Värmland, attracts more than 200,000 spectators and nearly 100 million TV viewers worldwide. This year, from 9th-12th February, over 100 teams set off in Karlstad, racing along 331.74 km (206mi) of winding, icy terrain before completing the circuit back where it began. To provide spectators with an awe-inspiring view of the race, there are four arenas located at key points along the route. This year, Rally Sweden enlisted the help of Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) dealer Swecon to construct its headline arena –Road to Rock – and it didn’t disappoint. Aligning two great industries Swecon has acted as Volvo CE’s sole dealer in

Sweden since 1999. The dealership employs around 450 people and 200 service technicians across 41 locations, from Staffanstorp in the south to Kiruna in the north. “We’ve supplied machines to load and unload when the teams come to the service park and even orchestrated a machine display in front of approximately 10,000 people last year, which received a lot of positive feedback,” says Fredrik Rigö, market communications manager for Swecon. “For the 2017 season, we decided to take our involvement a step further by becoming the Arena Naming Partner. Rally Sweden was keen to use a Swedish brand for the construction work, and with Volvo CE being the number one brand for construction equipment in Sweden, Swecon was

the natural choice.” Solid start When Rally Sweden announced its decision to convert the Torsby quarry into a permanent arena, Swecon was up for the monumental challenge. “The opportunity to integrate our industry with such an impressive sport, and in such an organic way, was too good to pass up,” says Rigö. “We had essentially been given the chance to take the WRC into our backyard and make it our own! When we initially looked at the quarry in October 2016,

Swecon prepares the ground for the massive Road to Rock arena on a former quarry in Torsby, Sweden.

it was full of huge rocks. Quarry blasting created a lot of debris that needed removing before we could even think about creating the arena.” The track was designed together with Rally Sweden to ensure all the angles were correct and that the two signature jumps were safe. A team was formed, consisting of engineers, rally experts and Swecon’s product specialists, includ-

ing demo operators, who were responsible for project managing the track. Rock-hard machinery Swecon provided a fleet of excavators to create the track, including an EC160E, EC220E, EC250E, as well as an L150G and an A35D articulated hauler to ferry away the burden. A fleet of Volvo wheel loaders, comprised of an L50G, L60H, L70H and L90H, were also used to assist Continued on page 9

The HD features upgraded durability and optimizations for forestry work. These include metal guarding against brush and debris around key areas, such as lights, the AC condenser and rear screen. The machine blows debris from mulching applications out of the engine compartment screens with a hydraulically driven, auto-reversing cooling fan. A full rear brush guard is also available as a factory-installed option. The machine works with all standard attachments, including mulching heads, brush cutters, backhoes, buckets, snow blades and pallet forks. ASV purpose-builds the compact track loader from the ground up, starting with the undercarriage. The RT-75 HD features the company’s patented Posi-Track rubber track suspension. The dual-level suspension incorporates both suspended wheels and axles, providing operators a smooth ride over uneven terrain and

at higher speeds. The suspended wheels and fully flexible track conform to the ground, assuring maximum traction in the roughest conditions. In addition, the multiple wheel contact points and three guide lugs — more than many machines that use only one or two guide lugs — achieve maximum performance on steep slopes. The large number of contact points — combined with standard 18-inch-wide tracks — achieve a ground pressure of only 3.6 psi. Buyers can also pair the RT-75 HD with optional 20-inch tracks for an even lower ground pressure of 3.2 psi. The productivityenhancing features, combined with the RT-75 HD’s nearly 15 inches of ground clearance, allow workers to use the unit more comfortably and often in more places than competitive machines. Over the past 10 years, ASV has completely converted its undercarriage from a closed design — similar to those used on competitive steel-embedded undercarriages — to an open-rail and drive-sprocket design. The result is increased sprocket and bogie life and an undercarriage that’s easier and faster to clean. ASV manufactures all rollers with mechanical

face seals so that no maintenance is needed for the life of the machine. The innovative tracks contain embedded co-polymer cords for extra strength and are produced using a single-cure process, eliminating cure-point weaknesses in the track that can lead to premature breakage. The result is a 1,500- to 2,000-hour track life — 30 percent more than steelembedded track units. ASV guarantees their tracks with an industry-leading two-year, 1,500-hour track warranty. The RT-75 HD features a 75-horsepower Cummins 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel engine that produces 221 foot-pounds of torque — 13 percent more than the machine’s 80-horsepower predecessor, the PT-80. Direct-drive hydraulic motors transfer torque to the ground. The RT-75 HD doesn’t use planetary drives, eliminating the need for servicing those components. Highly efficient motors transfer maximum power to the patented internal-drive sprockets. Internal rollers prevent friction loss in the undercarriage, resulting in maximum power transfer to the track regardless of drive speed. oxidation catalyst that requires no regeneration, no sensors, no diesel exhaust fluid, less wiring and no additional maintenance. ASV designed the unit with serviceability in mind, manufacturing it with a three-panel hood and tilting cooler arrangement to provide operators easy access to the reliable Cummins engine. The rearward tilting cab provides easy accessibility when further service is required. Featuring sight gauges for both hydraulic oil and coolant, the design simplifies routine inspections of filters, oil and standard service items. ASV builds the RT-75 HD’s highly efficient auxiliary hydraulic system to provide 35.7 gpm high flow and 3,300 psi. The machine transfers more flow and pressure directly to the attachment by using larger line sizes, hydraulic coolers and direct-drive pumps rather than belt-driven pumps, which prevents power loss. The improved efficiency allows operators

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · Our Readers Are Your Buyers to run attachments, such as brush cutters and mulching heads, more efficiently than higher-horsepower machines from other manufacturers. As a result of belt-driven pumps and restrictions in the hydraulic systems, many competitive machines lose as much as 30 percent of the listed horsepower. The RT-75 HD achieves 22 percent more actual hydraulic horsepower than the 80-horsepower compact track loader it replaces. The RT-75 HD includes high-performance features for difficult applications. The machine runs at a rated operating capacity of 2,650 pounds and a tipping load of 7,571 pounds. It is 70 inches wide and has a lift height of 126 inches. Operation is easy and intuitive with the standard joystick controls. The machine comes with an optional allweather cab that includes heat and air-conditioning, and is pressurized for a clean operator environment. b Source: ASV

Connectivity Keeps Assets Talking From heavy equipment to hand tools and everything in between, having connectivity at the jobsite is essential to running a productive business. The challenge, however, is getting that connection in remote locations. Enter satellite. The construction industry can use satellite imagery on sites for route planning, monitoring of projects, 3D modelling of excavation areas and so much more. A new report from Allied Market Research also forecasts the world commercial satellite imaging market is expected to generate $5,275 million by 2022. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 11.5 percent from 2016 until 2022. Looking at market breakdowns, civil engineering and archaeology is projected to grow at the highest rate of 12.9 percent. Meanwhile, geospatial data acquisition and mapping application is projected to generate the highest revenue in the commercial satellite imaging industry.

Geographically, last year North America generated the highest revenue among all regions in the world in the commercial satellite imaging industry, and is expected to be the leading contributor to the global revenue during the forecast period. Asia-Pacific is also anticipated to grow at a high rate of 13.1 percent. Some contributing factors to this growth include an increase in adoption of LBS (location-based service); the rise in adoption of satellite imaging services in many industries; and innovative developments in technologies and equipment such as GPS (global positioning systems), advanced remote sensing technology and more. For the construction industry, the key takeaway is that connectivity at the jobsite is paramount—and satellite is anticipated to grow, offering another way to keep all assets “talking” at the jobsite. b Source: Conexpo

the three other arenas with snow removal and maintenance. During the event, a range of Volvo machines, including the EC750E, EC480E, EC380E, EC300E, EC250E and an A45G were on display in the Road to Rock arena. The machines put on a spectacular show for the spectators as they waited in anticipation for the rally cars to enter the stadium. The construction of the arena was carried out by an unlikely team of operators. “We employed third-year

students from nearby specialist tech school, Södra Viken to operate the machines,” says Rigö. “They have a Volvo EC140E and an EC160E excavator on operational lease, as many students study transport, construction or forestry. It was a great experience for them to be involved in an actual project – and you don’t get much better than the WRC.” “The machines performed to expectation, and we didn’t encounter any problems during the project,” says Rigö. “This

enabled us to transform a disused quarry to a showcase arena in a little over a month!” Work began in early November and ran until mid-December. Groundbreaking business The one-of-a-kind Road to Rock arena held stages 8 and 18, the latter referred to as the ‘Power Stage’, which is situated just 500m (0.3mi) from the finish line. Due to the carefully planned layout of the arena, the thousands of spectators could witness the action for a prolonged period of time –

Page 9 approximately 45 seconds per team. Following the highly successful race weekend, Rally Sweden stated that it is impressed with Swecon’s achievements. “We transformed the center of the quarry into a sort of VIP area, catering to around 600 customers and guests over the course of the weekend,” concludes Rigö. “We are looking forward to continuing our work with Rally Sweden in the coming years.” b Source: Volvo

Maritime Link Project Update The $1.5 billion Maritime Link Project continues to be on budget and on schedule. The mega renewable energy initiative, which started in 2014 and is expected to be completed by late this year, involves the construction and operation of a 500-megawatt high-voltage transmission line that will bring electricity from the Muskrat Falls generating facility on the Churchill River in Labrador to Nova Scotia. Owned and operated by NSP Maritime Link Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Newfoundland & Labrador, the Maritime Link Project is part of a larger strategy to address the growing demand for more renewable energy. It will enable the transmission of clean, renewable and reliable electricity from Newfoundland and Labrador to Nova Scotia and beyond. The project involves building 170 kilometres of subsea HVdc (high-voltage direct current) transmission cables under the Cabot Strait, overhead transmission in Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia

and includes transmission corridors, two switchyards, two converter stations and adjoining substations, two transition compounds , two grounding sites, two onshore anchoring sites and other infrastructure as required. In excess of $250-million worth of contracts has been awarded to more than 200 Nova Scotia companies alone which has had a significant material impact on the province’s economy over the past number of years and will continue to do so throughout the duration of the project. An average of 300 jobs has been created annually over the construction period and peaked at 600. A significant workforce has been required in both provinces between 2014 and 2017. “As of the end of December 2016, more than two million hours of work has been completed on the project, creating construction jobs for more than 650 people in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland & Labrador,’’ stated Jeff Myrick, Senior Manager of Communications and Public Af-

fairs for Emera Newfoundland & Labrador. He said a variety of heavy equipment is being used for the project including 20-30 ton excavators, feller buncher harvesters, mulchers, forwarders, processors, float trucks, graders, loaders, D4-D6 dozers and troopers. Transmission line construction required some very different types of equipment including a 70 ton track crane, 8 ton rough terrain crane, Nodwell Flextrac vehicles, Morookas, 315-345 CAT excavators, D6 & D7 dozers, 35/40 ton rock trucks, rollers and loaders. Amongst the civil site work construction equipment was 5-90 ton excavators, 30-40 ton articulated rock trucks, 40 ton off -road haul trucks, dump/tandemtandem trucks, float trucks, 20-30 ton boom trucks, flyers, D4-D8 dozers, loaders, graders, skid steers/bob cats, 20-120 ton cranes, hydraulic drills, crushers (primary jaw and secondary cones),JLG forklifts and aerial work platforms. But some specialized equipment also had to be

brought in for the job including a customized “long stick” excavator for construction of the grounding site breakwater, amphibious excavator and rock barges for placement of rock reefs and drill rigs, and a guy anchor test pull machine for installing and testing guy anchors for guyed towers. Myrick said projects like this are unique and play an important role in the construction industry. “The Maritime Link Project is a large project covering a large geographic area in two provinces. Given the size and the use of High Voltage Direct Current (HVdc) technology, it provides the construction industry with an opportunity to build new expertise and attract more highly skilled workers.’’ Emera NL CEO Rick Janega told Supply Post the company is committed to diversity on the Maritime Link Project and as a result, contractors working on the project are required to ensure that women, Aboriginal Peoples, individuals with disabilities and visible minorities have equal opportunity for roles in which they have been traditionally under-represented in the workplace. “We see this project as an opportunity for contractors to develop a more diversified workforce that brings a variety of attributes and perspectives to their future work,’’ he went on to say.

The Maritime Link project is divided into three distinct geographical regions. The Island of Newfoundland includes an estimated 300 kilometres of transmission line along new and existing corridors between Granite Canal and Cape Ray. The associated infrastructure will include two switchyards, one converter station, one transition compound, one onshore cable anchoring site, one grounding site, roughly 20 kilometres of grounding line, and about two kilometres of underground cable. The Cabot Strait includes two subsea HVdc cables will span approximately 170 kilometres across the Cabot Strait from Cape Ray on the island of Newfoundland to an area west of the Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) Point

Aconi generating station in Cape Breton. This portion of the project includes two landfall sites where the cables will come ashore in Nova Scotia and on the island of Newfoundland. Nova Scotia includes less than 50 kilometres of new HVdc transmission line, parallel to an existing transmission corridor, between a point on the west side of the Point Aconi generating station and an existing substation at Woodbine. Associated infrastructure includes one converter station, one transition compound, one onshore cable anchoring site, one grounding site, roughly 40 kilometres of grounding line and about two sections of underground cable (one kilometre each). b By Jennifer Gouchie

Bright Lights, Big Auction In Las Vegas This March Thousands of people expected for the March 9-10 auction as shuttles run between the site and the Las Vegas strip Every three years, the construction industry descends upon Las Vegas for CONEXPO-CON/ AGG, one of the largest trade shows in the world. With so many industry participants in one place, it’s the perfect time for an equipment auction— attracting more bidders and driving great results for consignors. On March 9 – 10, 2017, right in the middle of CONEXPO, Ritchie Bros. will sell thousands of items for hundreds of companies at its Las Vegas site, offering interested bidders the convenience of shuttle buses between the auction site and the strip. “We hold four great auctions at our Las Ve-

gas site each year, but our auction held during ConExpo every three years is different,” said Ron Moss, Regional Sales Manager, Ritchie Bros. “In March 2014, we sold more than 2,300 items for 400 plus consignors, resulting in US$60+ million in gross auction proceeds—that still stands as our site record. That auction attracted more than 4,750 bidders from 63 countries, which is also still a record. Mr. Moss continued, “We want companies to benefit from the record crowds we expect this March. We will be marketing to customers in 100+ countries—sending 62,500+ print brochures, 63,000+ emails, along with print ads, airport ads, taxi ads, social media, call campaigns, and so much more. If you’re looking to sell,

Las Vegas Paving. “If someone wants to buy a piece of equipment, they are going to come out, or send someone, to take a look at it before they bid so having a permanent site right here in Las Vegas is very important—it’s a great facility with lots of room for equipment display. We feel we have one of the best fleets in the nation and Ritchie Bros. represents our company very well.” “We’ve sold with Ritchie Bros. quite a few times and keep coming back because they get us more bang for our buck,” said Brad Tripp, used equipment manager for Komatsu Equipment Company. “We love the live auction both as a seller and as a buyer. It gives people a chance to kick the tires and test the equipment out before they bid. With so many people expected to be flying in for ConExpo I’m confident the right bidders will be there on auction day, helping us get better returns for our equipment.” b

Linden Comansa Luffing-Jib Tower Crane To Be Displayed At ConExpo Linden Comansa America (LCA) will exhibit at the upcoming 2017 ConExpo-Con/Agg trade show, which will take place from March 7-11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. LCA is the exclusive North American distribution and service company for the parent organization Linden Comansa, headquartered in Spain. The company’s booth location is G-2789 in the Gold Lot of the outdoor exhibition area at the Las Vegas Convention Center. ConExpo is one of the world’s most significant construction trade shows with more than 2,500 exhibitors and 232,258+ square meters (2,500,000+ sq ft). At the show, LCA will display a luffing-jib tower crane — the first time a luffer has ever been displayed by LCA at a North American exhibition. The company will also highlight all the new developments and Original Flat-Top cranes launched during the past year leading up to ConExpo. Making its first appearance ever at ConExpo, the LCL 310 luffing-jib tower crane comes in three versions: 12, 18 and 24 tons (26,460 lbs, 39,680 lbs and 52,910 lbs), with maximum jib lengths of 60 meters (197 foot) and jib lengths every 5 meters (16.4 foot). The electric luffing-jib tower crane, with its compact, outof-service position and reduced hook radius, is ideal for use in cities or congested job sites. The LCL 310 will be available for rental at LCA’s Northwest Rental Division in Washington after the show. The new LCL 700, the largest luffing-jib crane in the Linden Comansa lineup, is being officially launched just a few weeks before the trade show. It will be unveiled at the Linden Comansa headquarter location in Spain. Offered in 50 and 64 ton (110,231 and 141,095 lb) versions, visit our ConExpo booth for more details. Within the 2100 Series are the latest 21 LC 335 and 21 LC 550 crane models. Originally with a

March 2017 to the other 150+ countries represented at ConExpo. At ConExpo, attendees will have the opportunity to meet the Linden Comansa sales and support team, see the luffing-jib tower crane on display, learn more about the company’s Flat-Top crane models, and discover the recent high profile projects where Linden Comansa tower cranes are now working. Bill Carbeau, Linden Comansa America’s Vice President of Business Development anticipates a busy show: “The market remains upbeat, many projects are ready to be released, and analysts are predicting positive growth within our industry. Therefore, we encourage contractors to visit our booth so we can better inform them about the capabilities of our cranes that can improve productivity, along with the outstanding service and support that has built our reputation.” The upcoming display will be LCA’s fifth consecutive participation at ConExpo. LCA was founded in 2002 to service NAFTA countries with sales, engineering, training as well as parts and service support. Its facility, located in Pineville near Charlotte, North Carolina, includes the main North American sales and support offices as well as a large warehouse for tower crane components, spare parts and technical training. LCA opened a Northwest Rental Division in Washington in mid 2016 to serve the states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho. b

maximum load capacity of 18 tons (39,680 lbs), these models have been optimized to now accommodate 20 tons (44,090 lbs). Also within the 2100 Series, Linden Comansa developed the new 21 LC 450 crane model in 20and 25-ton (44,090 lb and 55,120 lb) versions, which replaces the previous 12- and 18-ton (26,460 lb and 39,680 lb) 21 LC 400 crane model. The 3000 Series of Linden Comansa Flat-Top tower cranes consists of two models that vary from 32 ton, to 48 ton, to a heavy 90 ton (70,550 lbs to 105,820 lbs, to a heavy 198,410 lbs). These cranes are in response to new markets and customers interested in the safest, fastest and largest crane capacities — and all at an affordable price. The 16 LC 260 features an integrated tower top and counter-jib into one component. Frequencycontrolled drive systems from 37 to 110 kW The 260 provides a load chart slightly lighter than the 21 LC 335, but at a significantly lower cost. With a wide variety of Linden Comansa models introduced over the past year, customers will have more equipment choices to select from to better meet their next project or their local market needs — whether from North, South or Latin America (where the majority of trade show visitors will be from due to the show’s U.S. location), in addition Source: Comansa

ITS: The Future Is Here In early November, Americans went to the polls to choose their new leaders. And the outcome of this election will impact what steps are taken to improve infrastructure—and how technology will play a role. Regardless of how the election divided most of America, many voters agree that the nation’s infrastructure has gotten worse, according to an Association of Equipment Manufacturers poll released back in August. What is needed is for government, technology providers and the construc-

tion community to come together to identify how technology can help build infrastructure. This trend began to take shape this year. Back in October, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced programs designed to advance technology in smart cities and infrastructure. San Francisco has a new grant for intelligent systems technologies. Denver received funding for a smart-city program. There is a new innovation partnership to implement technologies on U.S. Route 33

in the cities of Marysville and Dublin in Union County, near Columbus, Ohio. A grant was given for border crossing technologies in Niagara-Buffalo region. Pittsburgh is implementing a variety of intelligent systems technologies. Houston is also receiving smarter systems. And this was all announced in the month of October. Now, time will tell what the new administration will do with regards to implementing technology in cities and infrastructure, but the ball is certainly already beginning to roll in that direction. A Look Inside There is a common thread between most of these announcements— ITS (intelligent transportation systems) technologies. The majority of these projects are incorporating this type of technology to improve congestion and overall safety of people occupying the infrastructure. While each city and state might be doing something a little differently, this is what they have in common. As one example, the

FHWA announced a $10.8 million grant for Pittsburgh to implement a variety of intelligent systems technologies in the city. The grant was given under the FHWA’s Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment program for “Smart Spine” corridors in Pittsburgh that connect with primary commercial centres and amenities. The technologies include expanding the network of connected, real-time adaptive signal controllers to promote more optimized transit operations. Pittsburgh is also implementing an LED (lightemitting diode) smart streetlight conversion of nearly 40,000 street lights. With this technology, the lights will have traffic detection and air quality sensors, providing energy savings to the city. This particular grant is part of the larger announcement, which totals $56.6 million to fund advanced technologies to various areas of the country. The program funds technologies that address the concerns that were outlined in the Beyond Traffic report that were issued last year and address the challenges facing America’s transportation infrastructure. The Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment program

was established under the “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation” Act. What does all this mean for the construction industry? Intelligent transport systems are here. In fact, a Research and Markets report suggests the global market will grow from $36.1 billion in 2015 to $63.66 billion by 2022. This is a compound annual growth rate of 8.3 percent between 2016 and 2022. This particular report points to the adoption of railway intelligent transportation systems being a step towards gaining a competitive edge over other modes of transportation. Still, the roadways segment has dominated the global market. Transportation of the Future The future of transportation will likely incorporate some form of intelligent transportation systems, which integrate information and communication technologies with existing transportation networks to improve operating efficiency and travel experience. Terry Bill, global transportation industry manager, Esri, says there are two factors driving the growth of this technology today. The first is the fact that in many areas of the country, we can no longer “build” our way out of congestion. The second is that connected and autonomous vehicles are becoming “connected” to their infra-

structure. John Paljug, president of Siemens Rail Automation in the United States, adds that populations are growing, which is also driving the need for intelligent transportation systems. “By the year 2050, an estimated 70 percent of the world’s population will be living in cities,” he explains. “As a result, there will be an increasingly urgent need to provide more intelligent mobility solutions for the residents that make travel simpler, more flexible, more reliable and affordable. Cities, on the other hand, face the challenge of reducing the costs, space requirements, and noise and CO2 emissions of the transportation.” Often, the challenge is that the different technology players in the market have different approaches to the data that will be required, and the ways in which the technology will be applied, explains Bill. What is needed from the construction community is strong links to groups they may not have had much contact with, he continues. “There are really two types of firms that are engaged in ITS projects: the large A&E firms like HNTB and the specialized ITS implementers like Iteris,” he says. “There are a range of standards and background understanding about ITS communication protocols Continued on page 17

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · Our Readers Are Your Buyers build even better trafficmanagement systems, but he also cautions that “anyone who tells you they know what will happen in the next 10 years is either a liar or an idiot.” This is because there is so much division among experts. And perhaps this could also be because leaders in government are changing as well. Time will tell

what will come in the future, but technology, such as intelligent transportation systems, can certainly play an enabling role in helping move all this forward. Now, it is simply a matter of creating the framework and building the partnerships to bring all this to fruition. b

Fleetlink Telematics System Optimizes Fleet Management

es for a single machine or a group of machines. The geo-fence program automatically sends a message to a pre-defined email address when a machine enters or leaves the designated area, allowing customers to track their machines even when not logged in on the webpage. Contractors can easily set up maintenance schedules by using the FleetLink system. The tool emails a designated account when a machine is close to its next service due date. In the maintenance overview of the advanced module, users can see the service status of every machine in their fleet. This helps plan equipment servicing efficiently and proactively. FleetLink Advanced is used on Atlas Copco soil rollers ranging from the CA1500 to the CA6500, asphalt rollers CC2200 to the CC6200 as well as large highway class pavers such as the F800T, F800W, F1000T and F1000W. This system includes all the features and functions of FleetLink but also monitors each machine’s parameters and performance every minute. Having this data available optimizes fleet usage, reduces waste and saves time and money. For instance, fleet managers can see if a piece of equipment is standing idle at a time when they would expect it to be in use. They can then talk to the operator to determine the cause and find a solution. The Advanced system allows for further analysis and checks the equipment performance in customizable timeframes. Users can track the machine’s coolant temperature, travel time, fuel consumption and load factor, improving performance. FleetLink Advanced users can export and save all data for further analysis. b

that are prerequisites to entry into the ITS market. If you don’t have those skills, you certainly need to develop that background.” So what is coming for the future? Bill does believe the industry will make great strides in using artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to

Atlas Copco’s intelligent telematics system, FleetLink, provides road construction contractors with a convenient and efficient tool to monitor and manage their equipment fleet. The system allows users to optimize fleet usage, reduce maintenance costs and save time and money. “We want to provide our customers with an easy way to monitor and track their fleet and operations,” said Tim Hoffman, Atlas Copco Road Construction Equipment product manager. “Our innovative FleetLink system takes efficiency and fleet management to a new level to enhance overall productivity.” Atlas Copco offers FleetLink in two packages — FleetLink for small pavers

and FleetLink Advanced for use with large soil and asphalt rollers as well as large highway class pavers. Both packages come standard with a new Atlas Copco machine purchase and are free for customers during the first three years. Each package includes the hardware module, access to an online fleet management portal, and a monthly connection package subscription, which customers can extend after the three years. FleetLink is used on Atlas Copco small pavers, including the F1200C, and is compatible with other manufacturers’ equipment. The system records the location of the equipment and working hours. It also includes a tool to set one or more geo-fenc-

Terex TC 2800-1 Lattice Boom Truck Crane Lifts Wind Turbines In The Swiss Alps On behalf of German company Enercon GmbH, Switzerland-based WeltiFurrer Pneukran & Spezialtransporte AG erected three E-92 wind turbines at the Gries Pass, which has an altitude of roughly 2,500 meters. Since this type of high alpine project is enormously challenging on equipment, the crane service provider decided to rely on the proven strengths of its Terex TC 2800-1 lattice boom truck crane. In addition to high reliability, there were other aspects that were decisive in the company’s choice of crane: “On one hand, the TC 2800-1 is extremely maneuverable. On the other, it features extraordinary gradeability. These are two indispensable prerequisites for working in high mountain areas, and they’re exactly the reason why this crane is our preferred machine when it comes to this type of highaltitude project,” explains

Welti-Furrer project manager Werner Häfliger. This is further complemented by the crane’s flexible outrigger system, which can have an area of either 10 x 10 meters or 14 x 14 meters and makes it possible to adapt to difficult work site conditions – precisely the type of conditions that the Welti-Furrer team and its machine would be facing from the very start. Explosives clear the path Even the drive up to the work site on the evening of July 25 at 9 pm was anything but easy for the TC 2800-1, its assist crane, and 15 transportation trucks accompanying it: Uphill slopes of up to 18.5 percent, numerous narrow passageways, and the vehicles’ altitude-related power loss made things hard not only for the equipment, but also for the people involved in the project. In fact, entire paths and setup areas had to be literally hewn out of solid rock and, in certain cases, cleared by

means of explosives in advance. However, this timeconsuming prep work was exactly what enabled the team to get the TC 2800-1 crane to the work site on schedule, at 2:30 am. The team had estimated a total of two days for setting up the crane with four assembly technicians, and was able to get things done according to plan once again. This was due in large part to the TC 28001 truck crane’s ease of assembly. For the upcoming lifts, the crane was set up with an outrigger area of 14 x 14 meters and a counterweight of 200 tonnes on the superstructure. For the boom, the Welti-Furrer specialists chose an SH/LH SGL_S7 configuration with a 90-meter main boom. In addition, they mounted a lightweight, rigid LF-2 jib, which contributed an additional 12 meters to the total height. This resulted in an available boom length of 102 meters – enough to erect the wind turbines’

84-meter-tall tubular steel towers and easily lift all components – with a maximum weight of 64 tonnes – while working at radii between 22 and 25 meters. Winter sets in the middle of summer The lifts themselves were a matter of routine: “Our team has plenty of experience with projects in high mountain areas and is perfectly able to handle the conditions that are particular to that kind of terrain,” Werner Häfliger points out. Certainly an important thing, as extreme weather conditions are the norm for this type of altitude – not only in terms of weather that can change very rapidly, but also in terms of high-speed winds that can start at any moment. And when the weather really “goes all out,” you can even get snow in the middle of summer, as was the case on July 15, 2016: “That day, the pass was blocked by snow, which meant we couldn’t access the site,” Werner Häfliger reports.

Page 19

As a result, the schedule for erecting the three wind turbines became extremely tight, and the scheduled three months that the Terex TC 2800-1 would be spending at the site had to be enough to erect all three wind turbines together with the Enercon assembly team. “We made sure to take full advantage of every single second of wind-free time we got, which enabled us to finish

things on schedule despite the adverse conditions and hand over all the turbines on time. And we owe a big part of that to having combined a perfectly coordinated team with the right machine for the job. In fact, this is not the first time the crane has proven its worth in high alpine projects,” Werner Häfliger happily summarizes. b Source: Terex

Takeuchi Releases New TB2150 Excavator Takeuchi-US, an innovative global leader in compact equipment, has launched the TB2150 hydraulic excavator to the market. Completely redesigned from the ground up, the TB2150 replaces the Takeuchi TB1140 SERIES 2 excavator. The TB2150 is the largest, most capable excavator in the Takeuchi lineup. At 34,480 pounds, the machine delivers greater functionality, performance, comfort, and serviceability over the previous TB1140 SERIES 2 model. The TB2150 offers a maximum digging depth of 18 ft. 0 in., maximum dump height of 20 ft. 4.9 in., maximum reach of 28 ft. 8.9 in. and maximum bucket breakout force of 22,190 pounds. Powered by a Deutz TCD 3.6 liter turbocharged diesel engine that is US EPA Final Tier 4 emission compliant, the TB2150 produces 114 horsepower (HP), a 10 percent increase over the previous version, and delivers 339 ft-lbs of torque, a 19 percent increase. The engine utilizes a DOC+SCR diesel exhaust

after-treatment system that requires the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The operator’s station has been completely revamped with an automotive styled interior that is operator friendly. A spacious cabin features a heated deluxe high back air suspension seat, and the new color multi-information display keeps the operator informed of machine performance. In addition, the excavator includes boom and arm holding valves, an overload alarm, and a new rear view camera to view objects behind the machine on the color monitor. Serviceability and uptime have been improved by simplifying access to key maintenance items. This includes a nearly 5 percent increase in fuel tank capacity and the engine does not have a DPF to maintain. In addition, the machine comes standard with Takeuchi’s new telematics system, Takeuchi Fleet Management. “The new TB2150 represents Takeuchi’s commitment to continuous product

manager at Takeuchi-US. “The TB2150 is more capable, comfortable and spacious than its predecessor, improvement so we can and our customers will find provide the latest in tech- it to be an exceptional value nology and performance to and upgrade.” b our customers,” said David Caldwell, national product Sourcee: Takeuchi

MORE POWER. LESS FUEL. With KOBELCO excavators, you get best-in-class fuel economy every time you fire up the engine – no matter how tough the job. With our latest Generation 10 machines, we’re taking that efficiency to a whole new level. These new machines now boast up to a 7% increase in work volume per hour while also providing up to a 10% increase in fuel efficiency in S-mode and an additional 6% in ECO- mode. Put one to work on your next job and add some serious power to your bottom line.
