International Truck Announces New Warranty Packages International Truck announced three compelling plans to deliver on its Uptime pledge to vocational truck customers. These include the extension of the International A26 Customer Uptime Assurance Program for vocational models, a new, best-inclass Vocational Confidence Warranty Package and the International A26 Barrel Protection Plan for the International HX Series and International HV Series trucks powered by the International A26 12.4 L big bore engine. The announcement at the World of Concrete 2018 demonstrated International’s commitment to provide the vocational market with reliable and durable products powered by the all new International A26 engine. “The International A26 engine, developed from a new way of thinking and with ‘uptime’ in its DNA, is at the core of our vocational truck strategy,” said Mark
Stasell, vice president, Vocational Truck Business. “We are so confident in the International A26 engine that we are offering customers additional peace of mind through the A26 Customer Uptime Assurance Program, the Vocational Confidence Warranty Package and the International A26 Barrel Protection Plan. These three offerings are designed to protect our customer’s investment and bottom line when they buy a vocational truck from International.” International A26 Customer Uptime Assurance Program for Vocational Models The International A26 Customer Uptime Assurance Program for Vocational Models is straightforward. If a customer experiences a warrantable failure on an International A26 engine within its twoyear standard warranty period, and experiences downtime greater than 48 hours from the time of
diagnosis, International Truck will provide the customer with a $250 International Advantage Card, good for future parts and service purchases at an International dealership, subject to standard conditions. Innovation in the forest sector will help to combat the effects of climate change, create new markets for Canadian forest companies and sustain good, middle-class jobs for Canadians. Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Jim Carr, announced funding of $6.45 million for six projects in British Columbia to promote innovation and diversification in forestry and support collaboration with Indigenous communities. The Minister made the announcement during the B.C. Natural Resources Forum. The funding delivers on the Investments in Canada’s Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program and the Indigenous Forestry Initiative (IFI) through the Strategic Partnerships Initiative for Indigenous Economic Development. The recipients are: Pacific Bioenergy Prince George Limited
an Organic Rankin Cycle biomass plant as its technology of choice, as this technology is able to use a variety of fuels available to the community. Gitxsan Development: $1.165 million to implement a series of scans and activities to lay the foundation for the Gitxsan people to participate in and benefit from major resource projects occurring within, and near, their territory. The Kwadacha First Nation will receive a total of $143,000 for two projects: $98,000 to support a community combined heat and power bioenergy system. Using a sustainable supply of local forest biomass, this system will create employment, economic and social benefits, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. $45,000 to undertake a review and prepare a report of their experiences and lessons learned from a successful green-energy initiative in the community that uses local beetle-killed timber to fuel a bioenergy plant for the generation of electricity and heat. b

Managing equipment data and machine control systems lies at the heart of providing safe, productive equipment at the lowest possible cost, says Hubbard Construction’s John Sharp. With some 1,500 pieces of equipment – nearly 400 of them heavy equipment – Florida, US-based highway specialist contractor Hubbard Construction Company has adopted an 8-point selection process in a bid to boost machine productivity. John Sharp is the company’s experienced Group Equipment Director. ‘If we don’t use it for 70% of the time, we’re not buying it’ Equipment utilization is key. When we look at our fleet, we want to own any machine that has 70% utilization on a regular basis. Anything else we rent as needed. The
core machines we own give us control over critical site tasks and reassure clients about how we are going to deliver projects when tendering. ‘Keep for first component life – then replace’ We have over 25 years of maintenance history that tells us how long to expect each machine type to last. Typically, that’s anywhere between 1015,000 hours over eight to nine years. Our goal is to run a machine for its ‘first life’, only retiring it as it approaches 85-90% of its major component lifespan. ‘If the repair time is over four hours – the dealer does it’ Modern machines are so specialized and computerized that for anything major you have to get a dealer technician in. We can’t expect our guys to know the
intricacies of all the major brands of machine – or put all the service modules on our computers. We are increasingly relying on dealers to keep our machines up and running. ‘Total maintenance = total peace of mind’ Every machine we buy comes with a total maintenance and repair contract. So, if I buy a Volvo ECR235E I expect that machine to be looked after by my Volvo dealer for eight years, 12,000 hours – and give me a guaranteed buyback at the end. ‘It’s the total package that wins the day’ We put values on each of the services a manufacturer and its dealers deliver to us. Price is the last thing we look at. We don’t buy the cheapest, but the one that delivers best value and lowest cost

of ownership. We rank manufacturers on eight aspects: • Field tech availability. • Workshop performance. • Parts availability. • Rental costs. • Rental availability. • Condition-based monitoring program. • Machine specification. • Purchase price. ‘Dealers have to help manage data’
Machine technology is a good thing – but dealers have to help manage it, as it can be very cumbersome. That’s why we require dealers to provide Conditioned Based Monitoring Program. Services like Volvo CE’s ActiveCare Direct (in North America) monitor the machine data and tell us what we need to know to increase productivity and uptime.
Manufactures and dealers have to deliver the value from all the machine data. I welcome dealers calling up and telling me a machine is underperforming, or being operated incorrectly – because that’s going to help me lower my cost per hour through less downtime or expensive component repair. ‘Machines have to be easier to use’ Continued on page 10

It’s not easy for operators to jump from a Volvo to a Cat to a Komatsu. The controls are similar but there are differences that can reduce safety and productivity. There is a shortage of skilled operators, but modern machine control systems are compensating for this, and helping us get guys in seats. Liebherr’s Environmentally Friendly Air Cycle Air Conditioning For Trains Liebherr-Transportation Systems has successfully completed a project examining air conditioning in public transport on behalf of the UBA (DessauRosslau, Germany) as part of the Environmental Research Plan of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. The aim was to test, measure and assess air conditioning systems operating with only natural coolants for sustainably cooling and heating public transport. Testing in real operating conditions Once individual cars had been converted at the DB plant in Nuremberg, a train from the ICE-3 fleet (type 403, first series) with air cycle air conditioning systems was tested in passenger service from the end of June 2015. The LiebherrTransportation Systems team had installed additional sensors and measuring systems for this test in order to collect extensive
operating data for a period of two years and thereby allow detailed analysis of the systems. Their aim was to calculate the system’s energy consumption over its entire life cycle using data collected in real operating conditions and through all seasons. On this basis, it was also possible to determine whether air conditioning that runs on a natural coolant, air, is competitive and comparable with traditional air conditioning systems. Among other things, there was a focus on the energy efficiency demonstrated by Liebherr systems in daily passenger service operation. The test train was kept under careful observation, particularly during the hot summer months of July and August. Together with the UBA and DB, the Liebherr team thoroughly analyzed and assessed the data which was collected. Three climate zones were under observation: cool (Braunlage), moder-

ate (Kassel) and warm (Mannheim). On average the analysis of primary annual energy requirements for comfort cooling showed that an air cycle system with a reduced-pressure process (ICE-3) consumed 28% less power during the test than a vapour cycle system with speed-controlled compressor and the option of counter-heating (ICET). Analysis of secondary energy requirements (for traction) resulting from the pulse resistance of the air taken in by the air conditioning system yielded a reduction of more than 50% compared to the vapour cycle system. This further expands the advantages of air cycle technology. Overall, when it came to annual energy consumption in realistic operating conditions, air cycle technology showed a clear advantage. Reduced energy consumption had an immediate effect in lowering the environmental impact of energy provision (depending on the power mix) and in considerably reducing operating costs. The UBA supported the project involving the ICE 3 because, from an environmental point of view, the air cycle technology offers
advantages over traditional vapour cycle systems with fluorinated refrigerants. Environmentally friendly technology The maintenancefriendly air cycle air conditioning system was developed by LiebherrTransportation Systems. Air cycle technology is environmentally friendly because it requires no

synthetic refrigerants with their associated greenhouse effect. Instead, cooling is performed exclusively with natural ambient air. This air is first conducted through an open loop by a cooling turbine running at high speeds. The cooling turbine is a compact component consisting of a turbine stage, a compres-
sor stage and an electrical motor, all of which are connected by a common shared shaft. First the air is depressurized to below atmospheric pressure at the turbine stage, which cools it considerably. into the passenger compartment. During the last stage in the open circuit, the depressurized air is conducted through the compressor stage of the cooling turbine and compressed back to atmospheric pressure. During this process the air heats up significantly. That means the surroundings can be used highly effectively as a heat exchanger with 100% effectiveness. The entire air cycle air conditioning system comprises only a few components and is therefore very easy to maintain. Compared to conventional refrigerants such as R134a, air has many advantages: it does not need to be produced, as it exists already and is available everywhere. For this reason it requires no expensive storage and does not need to be disposed of after use. Potential leaks are not critical, because air has no negative effects on the environment and poses no potential risks. While employees working in air conditioning system production and on rail operation need training in handling refrigerants,
no special training is required for handling air. The air cycle air conditioning systems from Liebherr-Transportation Systems have performed exceptionally well in DB’s daily passenger business. Construction Industry: Rethinking Old Ways Of Working Fixing Construction’s Productivity Problem In A Modern World ven the smallest construction projects are multi-disciplined events that involve hundreds of individual actions. When scaled up to mega project size, managing the sequencing of man, machine and material so that the right things are done at the right time and place is a logistical headache that the industry has been grappling with for generations. Construction is improving – but its productivity improvements are far slower than the wider economy. Part of the problem is that each construction site is unique, with the main players only coming together for that particular project, before moving off to the next job. This has in the past discouraged a more joined up approach. So hindered as it is by project management inefficien-
cies, contractual misunderstandings and often a lack of communication, can the industry capitalize on growing global investment and learn a few productivity-boosting tricks from the wider world? Lessons On Industry Innovation When budget carrier Southwest Airlines found it was already in the lead in its refueling processes compared to other commercial carriers, it was forced to look elsewhere for inspiration to further reduce its turnaround operations. Most of the firm’s aircraft were grounded for an average of 40 minutes for refueling between flights, creating what the company felt were unnecessary costs and productivity losses. It found inspiration in Formula One – experienced in
turning around a racing car pit stop in as little as 2-3 seconds – and adopted a similar process. This eventually allowed crews to refuel an airplane in just 12 minutes. This sort of lateral bench-marking shows how construction can make inroads in productivity savings. Globally, labor-productivity growth in construction lags far behind that of manufacturing (3.6%) or the total economy (2.8%), at just 1% a year, according to research by private sector think tank McKinsey Global Institute (MGI). Yet if construction productivity were to catch up with the rest of the world economy, the sector’s value would increase by an estimated $1.6trillion, fulfilling about half of the world’s annual infrastructure need.

Suppliers are more likely to engage with an operation standard that they have had a role in establishing, which in turn leads to fewer mistakes, better communication, and a more collaborative approach to problem-solving. So, in 2005 the company began an incentive program where the strategy and cultural ethos had to be agreed collectively, from sub-contractors to equipment suppliers. As a result they beat their targets – achieving more than 50% carbon emission savings and a 40% reduction in construction time. Another key trend for 2018 is offsite construction. Google and Starbucks are already big investors, and now hotel chain Marriott International is taking the process into the mainstream by employing a band of offsite manufacturers as part of its global design strategy. Offsite construction and prefabrication not only helps make up for the short supply of skilled workers across the supply chain – by absorbing up to 60% of a project’s labor requirements – but also jumpstarts productivity by reducing timescales and lowering build costs. The Technology Model For Success Productivity improvements at companies are often defined by the technology employed, and even on a small scale, a failure to adapt to new tools can have an adverse effect, even at a national level. If a fifth of small businesses in a developed country like Great Britain are still using fax machines, according to a survey by Enterprise National, is it any surprise the British economy is suffering a poor productivity record? While artificial intelligence (AI) may seem like a distant prospect, tech start-

ups are recognizing that aspects of machine learning technology can help them break through into the mainstream. One such example is Slack, which is threatening to shake up ‘traditional’ email by using AI to intuitively group messages by topic and highlight which unread messages are of most importance, cutting down on the time spent manually filtering communications. At the other end of the scale, Amazon is using new technology to ensure productivity improvements keep a fast pace at every level of the company. Workers whose job it is to fulfil orders are kept constantly moving, thanks to hand-held devices that show them what each item looks like, where to find it and how to reach it as quickly as possible. It can, however, make for a strenuous work day in which every second is accounted for. While this is an extreme example of the ways in which technology can push productivity to its limits, digitization can be used to make workers lives a little easier. Increasingly, this is becoming a growing trend in construction.
