New TrailerCam Introduced By FLO Components At NHES FLO Components Ltd. displayed at the recent National Heavy Equipment Show, the Portable TrailerCam, what Mike Deckert, Vice-President of FLO Components called a “revolutionary new product solution for blind spots”. Designed and engineered in the USA by Convoy Technologies, LLC, the Patent Pending Portable TrailerCam is “the first truly removable, wireless, rechargeable battery operated camera on the market,” that literally can be placed (using strong, rugged magnets) on the side or rear of any truck, trailer or equipment. According to Deckert, the camera can be placed up to 100’ in distance, and can communicate high quality video images and audio to the display monitor in the cab with zero latency or interference. The TrailerCam is waterproof,
dustproof and “extremely rugged — capable of withstanding the highest industry standards for shock and vibrations,” said Deckert. For companies with multiple trailer fleets or equipment, the TrailerCam allows for usage with different trailers, swapping trailers and pairing with other TrailerCam devices. “For 40 years our focus at FLO has been to provide solutions which help companies cut costs, reduce unscheduled downtime and improve productivity, to take away our customers’ pain. Vermeer Introduces Silver Series Drill Rod Vermeer has bolstered its industry-leading line of HDD tooling and accessories with the addition of the Silver Series drill rod. Building on the tradition of the acclaimed Firestick drill rod, Silver Series drill rod gives contractors a quality aftermarket drill rod at an economic price. “There are many similarities between Firestick drill rod and Silver Series drill rod, including the threading and column wall thickness, but there are differences that help us keep a lower price,” said Dave Van Wyk, senior director of Lifecycle at Vermeer. “Firestick drill rod is the industry gold standard, as it offers unmatched quality and steering performance meant for the biggest and toughest jobs. Silver Series drill rod is a close second in terms of performance, giving operators a solid, costeffective option.” Like other lower tier options on the market, Silver Series drill rod is composed
of S135 common grade steel. But unlike others, it is threaded in the same state-of-the-art facility and subject to the same rigorous quality inspection process as Firestick drill rod. In addition, Firestick drill rod and Silver Series drill rod have the same column wall thickness, which is thinner than some competitive drill rod options. Van Wyk said this is why Vermeer drill rod provides superior longevity and steering performance. “Thicker column walls, while cheaper to manufacture, require more force to steer. That can put unbalanced stress on the connections and lead to premature thread wear and even joint failure,” said Van Wyk. “The Silver Series drill rod has the same wall thickness-to-connection strength ratio proven on Firestick drill rod.” Silver Series drill rod is now available in four sizes: 1.66” (4.2 cm), 1.9” (4.8 cm), 2.06” (5.2 cm),
and 2.375” (6 cm) for use on the D7x11 through the D24x40 S3 Navigator HDD models, including all current and legacy models in between. ABOUT VERMEER Vermeer Corporation delivers a real impact in a progressing world through the manufacture of highquality underground construction, surface mining, tree care, environmental and agricultural equipment. With a reputation for durability and reliability, that equipment is backed by localized customer service and support provided by independent dealers around the world. valve and multiple sensors. These features combine with the CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System and its four integrated control systems to make the best use of the machine’s hydraulic power and momentum, resulting in added strength and fuel efficiency. The four systems that make up the CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System are: Boom Economy Control (BEC), which reduces RPMs by using gravity during boom down and swing; Auto Economy Control (AEC), which lowers RPMs during idle and automatically shuts down the engine after a preset idle time; Swing Relief Control (SWC), which reduces hydraulic power at the swing start; and Spool Stroke Control (SSC), which adjusts hydraulic pressure during digs. Using improvements to the Spool Stroke Control system, the CX490D and CX500D excavators re-use hydraulic fluid whenever possible to automatically increase cycle times and efficiency. The operator experiences a more productive machine without losing the precision of the machine’s controls. The CX490D and CX500D excavators also provide the operator with three working modes – Speed Priority, Heavy and Automatic – that help the machine conserve energy and exert only as much power as needed to complete the job at hand. The arm and boom of each new excavator have been built stronger for greater durability and to support the added power of the machine. The undercarriage is built with thicker steel and a new singleslope design that reduces dirt accumulation and simplifies the cleaning process. CASE D Series excavators now offer more standard features than any previous CASE excavator. This includes Free Swing for improved craning, laying or lifting of offset loads; oil sample ports for quick sampling of engine and hydraulic oils; and an easy pattern selector for the op-

Uptake Partners With Caterpillar To Transform Data Analytics Through its model of collaborative disruption and a landmark partnership with Caterpillar, Uptake plans to put the construction industry’s data to profitable use. The construction industry has seen it coming for a while now: The commoditization and decreased costs of telematics, both in terms of hardware and connectivity, could help lead to billions of dollars’ worth of new efficiencies in operations and capital management. Several factors, including a downturned economy and glut of used equipment that has at times slowed the purchasing of new machines, have meant the industry has been slow to adopt telematics and the so-called industrial internet-ofthings. But there are signs that will soon dramatically change.
A recent push from OEMs and AEMPs to standardize hardware and information throughout the industry, combined with the decreasing cost of telematics and connectivity equipment, signals that the industry is on the cusp of generating what could amount to billions of dollars’ worth of increased uptime, better equipment utilization, and optimized workflow processes and operations. But similar to what has been seen in other industries (rail, aviation, energy, etc.), these changes will present challenges. In short, telematics will generate a deluge of data that most companies in the industry won’t be prepared to analyze, much less take actionable insights on. Equipping millions of pieces of construction equipment with sensors is
the easy part—utilizing the data they’ll produce is the real obstacle. Uptake, a Chicagobased data analytics company, wants to take on the data challenge. It’s working with the industry to both standardize its telematics ecosystem, and also to provide a platform to use all of that data to increase efficiencies across the board. But rather than developing a software platform as a third-party vendor to sell to the sector, it launched a joint venture project with Caterpillar to drive change from within the industry itself. “The construction industry has so much to gain from using data to optimize manufacturing, maintenance, logistics and operations—it’s certainly in the billions of dollars,” explained Trevor Mecham, vice president of construc-
tion and agriculture with Uptake. “Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, we are partnering with Caterpillar and other companies to build predictive analytics solutions that solve challenges unique to the industry.” Actionable Insights Examples of how data can be used to increase efficiency and drive revenue for the construction industry can be quite powerful. For example, sensors on a piece of equipment could alert owners to a maintenance need. The equipment is then taken offline for a scheduled repair and
it’s sent to a shop with a waiting mechanic that specializes in the repair and already has the needed part. Back at the job site, another piece of equipment has been scheduled to temporarily fill in. The time and hours saved on just one repair are significant—but an example like this barely scratches the surface. When data analytics becomes prevalent across the industry, its uses and effects could be staggering. Contractors could know just how long a piece of equipment can operated before a repair is needed, down to the hour. Daily job
site data gatherings, such as weather, can affect job site preparation and labor. Data can optimize job site schedules; manage fleets of equipment, including their uptime and utilization; dealers and rental houses can improve logistics and service. Companies can increase equipment utilization and decrease downtime for themselves and their customers. Construction schedules can be shortened; workforces could be optimized day-byday; project management could be transformed. “The data gained from Continued on page 8

construction can be as specific as the tire pressure on a single machine, or as general as the schedule and budget of an entire project,” Meacham explained. “Nearly every piece of the
construction ecosystem can generate usable data that leads to patterns, and those patterns can lead to predictions that companies can trust.” The Uptake platform gathers both historical and
real-time data, and then combines it to be analyzed and provide actionable predictions to its users. Results are then fed back into the software platform to further refine and validate its accuracy. This informa-
tion includes condition monitoring, workflows, logistics fleet management and other streams, such as weather and event-specific information. “To be successful in construction, you really have

to know the industry from the ground up,” Meacham said. “The biggest reason I joined Uptake and think the company will be successful is that we have decades of experience in the space. Sure, we have lots of PhDs and people who specialize in data analysis, but unless we can provide first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities that are unique to this industry, we won’t be able to achieve the kind of large-scale transformation we’re after.” Power in partnerships Through its model of collaborative disruption, partnerships give Uptake unprecedented access to staggering amounts of historical data that only companies with long histories in the industry can provide. Caterpillar and Uptake began working together in 2015 to identify the strategic touch points where predictive analytics can transform construction, in terms of both equipment and the ecosystem in which they operate. As the Uptake software platform becomes more powerful, the two companies are working together to validate its pre-
May 2017 dictions, ensuring quality and trust in the program. Similar to its partnership with Caterpillar, Uptake has also begun ventures in other industrial verticals, including a recently announced deal with Berkshire Hathaway Energy for work with its wind farms just weeks ago. These joint ventures put the focus on actionable outcomes that increase efficiency and return on investment, not on the software platforms themselves—outcomes as a service, not software as a service. In this way, Uptake’s partners share in both the risk and reward of the product. With all its ambition, Uptake is still a young company. Its partnership with Caterpillar is the beginning of its move into the construction industry, which is just beginning to validate the power of predictive analytics. “In the short-term, it’s all about awareness. Lots of companies in construction know that the power of data and telematics will enable them to work better, faster and longer, but right now, it’s ‘how’ this Continued on page 9

Morooka USA Introduces New Mid-Size Rubber Track Carrier Morooka MST700VD rubber track carrier.
Morooka USA has introduced a new mid-size rubber track carrier, the MST700VD, to the North American and South American markets. The new carrier sports a 93 hp Kubota V3800 Tier 4i engine for plenty of dependable power in tight spaces. It also provides a maximum payload of 9,460 pounds in a package that is less than
fied. “This fills a gap in our rubber track carrier fleet,” said Curt Unger, Morooka USA’s vice-president of sales. “We have three models more compact than the MST700VD, and four larger ones. So our full line dealers are now better able to custom-fit the needs of their customers to the capabilities of the carrier they rent or buy.” Rubber tracks offer both excellent traction and the low ground pressure necessary in sensitive terrain. In fact, the new MST700VD only exerts a ground pressure of about 3.6 psi (empty). The new model will come direct from the factory with a dump bed. All Morooka rubber track carriers feature hydrostatic transmissions and come with a one year, 1,000-hour warranty. b

equipped with tridem axle groups with an axle spread of three to 3.6 metres. It will also increase the gross vehicle weight allowance to 63,500 kg from 62,500 kg for the portion of PTH 12 from Steinbach to the Canada-U.S border. Manitoba is the only Canadian province that restricted the 24,000-kg maximum weight allowance for medium-spread tridem trailer axle groups. All other Canadian provinces allow the 24,000kg maximum on highways deemed capable of accommodating the higher weight. Allowing carriers to haul larger, heavier loads increases payload and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the minister noted. “This is another example of how our province is addressing the issue of red tape and reducing barriers to growth in our economy,” said Pedersen. “We consider this change a benefit for the trucking industry that balances the needs of industry with the continued protection of the infrastructure and road safety.” b
Manitoba’s trucking industry will be allowed to haul heavier weights to help improve competitiveness through changes to the Vehicle Weights and Dimensions on Classes of Highways Regulation, Infrastructure Minister Blaine Pedersen announced January 27th. The announcement is being made during Red Tape Awareness Week, which was proclaimed by the Manitoba government to highlight a focus on reducing unnecessary regulations and administrative burdens. “Manitoba’s trucking industry expressed interest in the change and a government review concluded an increase in allowable weight for certain semitrailers would create economic efficiencies, would not compromise safety and would have minimal effect on specific Roads and Transportation Association of Canada (RTAC) rated routes in the prov-
ince,” said Pedersen. “This change will bring Manitoba in line with other provinces by removing barriers for inter-jurisdictional carriers transporting goods within and through Manitoba.” “This change will improve the competitiveness of Manitoba’s trucking industry,” said Terry Shaw, executive director, Manitoba Trucking Association. “As it relates to inter-provincial travel, it is vitally important to our members to bring regulations like these in line with other jurisdictions. We applaud the Manitoba government for this announcement and look forward to continuing to work with them on strengthening our role in the provincial economy.” The change to the Vehicle Weights and Dimensions on Classes of Highways Regulation will set the maximum allowable weight to 24,000 kilograms for RTAC semi-trailers Source: Gov.mb.ca

Volvo Transforms Winter Slumberland Into Year-Round Icehotel Sweden’s coolest holiday venue – the Icehotel – is now open 365 days a year thanks to a fleet of Volvo wheel loaders working in sub-zero temperatures. Typically, when the mercury drops, holidaymakers often fly to sunkissed shorelines and sandy beaches, but for those who crave a colder climate, the Icehotel is the ideal destination. Located 200 kilometers (124 mi) within Sweden’s Arctic Circle, the Icehotel has warmed the hearts of locals and tourists alike – attracting up to 50,000 people every year to watch the Northern Lights.
The modern mega igloo is the brainchild of founder Yngve Bergkvist. “When I first moved here, people told me that the winters are dark and cold,” he recalls. “Even the tourist manager was convinced that nobody in their right mind would come to visit Jukkasjärvi during winter. I wanted to change that image and started to think about how we could use our cold environment in a productive and exciting way.” Since its establishment in 1989, this unique tourist attraction has only been built and in operation for about four months – between mid-December and mid-April – every year.
But in December 2016, the same location unveiled the Icehotel 365, the world’s first permanent ice hotel. Now, the most hardcore of cold lovers can enjoy the experience year-round in the 2,100 square meter (22,600 ft2) getaway, featuring 20 rooms, art galleries and of course, a 200 square meter (2,150 ft2) ice bar. The groundbreaking concept is also environmentally sustainable. Breaking The Ice The natural ice is cultivated and harvested from the Torne River, which flows past the hotel complex. Come spring, most of the Icehotel and all the artwork melts, returning to
the river. “I have a background in environmental science and have always believed that you should utilize and recycle every part of what you build,” Bergkvist says. Indeed, sustainability is central to all aspects of the hotel. Storm water is used to reduce the mains sup-

ply and wastewater from the ice-storage cooling system is reused. All laundry is handled on site, saving on transport, and the facility repurposes the excess steam from washers and dryers. The hotel complex strives to be carbon neutral and uses electricity from renewable sources. Solar panels generate more than enough electricity to keep the year-round hotel chilled during the warmer months. Using the near constant daylight of the midnight sun within the Arctic Circle between May and September is a sustainable way of having the hotel open all year round. As a result, the sun will ensure that the guests at the Icehotel get a cold night’s sleep and a warm welcome in the morning. Frozen Assets The unique construction conditions have presented challenges for both man and machine. Alf Kero, site manager, has been working at the venue for over 10 years says: “The biggest challenge with planning and constructing the [seasonal] Icehotel is definitely the weather,” which can drop to a bone-chilling minus 40 degrees centigrade. “For this purpose, we only
use Volvo machines, as they are robust, fuel-efficient and are regarded as the most reliable,” he adds. A fleet of Volvo wheel loaders – including the L60E, L35B, L30B and a 1992 vintage L50 – are used to harvest ice, move snow and ice blocks used for building, as well as clear snow. The process of cultivating and harvesting natural ice has been fine-tuned over the years. “Starting in January, we clear snow from the marked areas on the river. We then use the machines when we harvest from the middle of March and put the ice in storage for the next season,” explains Kero. This minimizes wastage and emissions, as the ice does not have to be transported from source to storage and any that is not used is returned to the river. New Ice Age The growing popularity of the hotel has not gone unnoticed by the local community. “They have witnessed people coming from all over the world to experience ‘their’ winter,” Bergkvist says and gives the example of a visit by supermodel Naomi Campbell. “I think all of these things have helped to gradContinued on page 11

Deere Employees Increase Volunteer Hours By More Than 50 Percent In 2016, Deere & Company employees increased by more than 50 percent the number of volunteer hours they recorded in service to community organizations worldwide, totalling nearly 158,000 hours in the year compared to approximately 104,500 in 2015. During the year, Deere launched its “Serving Our Communities” initiative in which employees at Deere units around the world organized volunteer projects to benefit their local cities and towns. This initiative alone accounted for more than 17,000 volunteer hours. “Serving our Communities” involved 5,300 employees at 40 Deere lo-
cations. Projects included packaging meals and collecting cans of food for local foodbanks, planting gardens at local schools, packing backpacks with school supplies for at-risk children, and helping farmers in developing countries be more productive. Employees at other locations built houses through Habitat for Humanity, renovated schools, and picked up litter along a beach. Deere’s citizenship efforts include a robust global volunteer program that includes salary and wage employees as well as grants from the John Deere Foundation and corporate contributions made mostly in communities where

municipality, local government agency Tekniska Verken and designers at PinPin Studio. Students at the local school Hjalmar Lundbohmsskolan are also an important part of the process.
John Deere has company facilities. “Our employees take an active role in helping develop the communities where they live and work,” said Sam Allen, chairman and chief executive officer. “Through these volunteer efforts and our philanthropic contributions, we can positively impact the living standards of people across the globe.” In total, Deere and its Foundation provided grants and contributions totaling more than $31 million in fiscal year 2016, said Mara Sovey Downing, director, global brand management and corporate citizenship, and president of the John Deere Foundation. Downing said the company’s citizenship activities helped improve the lives of more than 18 million people across the globe. Overall, Deere’s citizenship efforts focus on three
important areas - long-term solutions for world hunger, education, and community development. Deere remains committed to investing annually in civic initiatives and has established a goal to reach one million volunteer hours recorded by employees. In 2016, John Deere was named as one of America’s Top 100 Corporate Citizens by Forbes magazine and the non-profit organization Just Capital. Deere & Company is a world leader in providing advanced products and services and is committed to the success of customers whose work is linked to the land – those who cultivate, harvest, transform, enrich and build upon the land to meet the world’s dramatically increasing need for food, fuel, shelter and infrastructure. b

“Three years ago, the students made a very much appreciated ‘miniature version’ of the playground as a school project,” says Petra Wadlund Lindh of the Icehotel. “This project is a continuation of that goal
which was to make something that could be appreciated by children as well as adults. We simply want to make something fun and beautiful.” b Source: Volvo

Camso Introduced New Severe-Duty Tire And Rubber Track Solutions Camso, formerly Camoplast Solideal, demonstrated at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 its leadership in the compact construction industry with new additions to its skid steer tire line up and telehandler range of products. Representing the best of two long-established, class-leading off-the-road brands, Camoplast and Solideal, the company attended the show for the first time as Camso, the Road Free Company. “Being Road Free is all about understanding the complex mobility needs of the offthe-road market. Although it’s been 20 months since we changed the name of our company, it’s the first time we’ve been to CONEXPO as Camso,” explained Mike Dembe, Product Management Director, North America and LATAM for Construction. “This is the perfect opportunity to meet customers to understand their off-theroad mobility challenges and help provide the appropriate mobility solutions,” he added. The right tire for any application at the lowest operating cost solution The construction industry has changed over the years. As jobs have become more demanding and applications more specialized, Camso believes that the tires and tracks that work in them should evolve too. As off-the-road specialists, Camso aims to provide customers with the right solution to suit any application. “Tires and tracks are not a one size fits all approach. It’s rare that one product can do everything. With so many variables at play — surface conditions, use of attachments, duty cycles, performance requirements and much more, it’s important to find the right tire for your application. We help our clients understand and address this, and in doing so, help to provide the Lowest Operating Cost Solution (LOCS) in a tire or track,” said Dembe. With this in mind, Camso R&D and product development teams have worked in the last years on a massive initiative to reinvent its construction
May 2017 Also on display were other recent Camso product development: the SKS 775, SKS 732 and SKS 793S, which complete Camso’s next generation skid-steer tire line-up. Exciting new mobility solutions for telehandlers Visitors also had the chance to see the two newest Next Generation TLH tires for telehandlers. With a new directional wraparound tread pattern with a massive tread depth, the Camso TLH 732 provides off-road traction in soft-soil conditions. Available in standard and new low-profile models, the Camso TLH 753 has a nondirectional tread that resists abrasion and wear on hardpacked, asphalt or concrete surfaces. These two new telehandler tires will be next to Camso’s solid option, the TLH 792S. At CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2017, Camso displayed for the first time the MPT 753, a new multipurpose tire to be launched later in 2017 and its overthe-tire and compact track loader tracks. CONEXPO-CON/AGG is the Western Hemisphere’s largest construction show and is held every three years at the Las Vegas Convention Center. During the March 7-11 event, more than 130,000 people attended over 2,500 exhibitors spread over 2.5 million sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor exhibit space. b
tire line and bring to the market the best performing, most durable and innovative new “Next Generation” tire solutions for the toughest construction applications. The industry’s largest range of skid steer tires and tracks Camso showcased its complete range of skid steer tires and tracks at CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Visitors had an opportunity to learn more about the company’s next generation product releases: the Camso SKS 753 and Camso SKS 532. The Camso SKS 753, with its innovative nondirectional tread pattern, was built with versatility and durability in mind for optimal performance on mixed and hard surfaces. The next generation of the popular Solideal Lifemaster SKZ tire, the new Camso SKS 753 provides users with 30% more tire life. The Camso SKS 532 delivers superior traction for skid steers working primarily on mixed and soft surface conditions often found in construction and landscaping applications. The Camso SKS 532 tire surpasses its predecessor, the Solideal Xtra Wall, with Source: Camso 30% longer life.

Hyundai Introduces New Model In 9A Series Compact Excavator Line Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas today introduced a seventh model in its 9A series of Tier 4 Final-compliant compact excavators. The new R30Z9AK is a three-ton-class model that features a zerotail swing design for optimum maneuverability in confined work spaces. The company announced and is exhibiting the new model at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 international construction equipment exposition. The 9A series excavators range from 1.7 to 8.2 metric tons, and include three zero-tail swing models, the R17Z-9A, R25Z-9A and R35Z-9A; a standard counterweight model, the R55-9A; and two compactradius models, the R60CR9A and R80CR-9A. “The new Hyundai R30Z-9AK model fills an important place in our compact excavator product line,” said Michael Fuller, product specialist, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “We see grow-
ing demand for machines in the three- and three-anda-half-ton class. Hyundai now has two strong entries in that market – the R30Z9AK and the R35Z-9A.” The Hyundai R30Z-9AK excavator is powered by a Kubota engine delivering 23.2 hp (17.3 kW). It’s maximum digging depth is 8 ft 2 in (2 490 mm), and its maximum digging reach is 15 ft 3 in (4 648) mm. Bucket breakout force is 4,520 lbf (20.1 kN). Configured with a canopy, the R30Z-9AK has an operating weight of 6,380 lb (2 894 kg). When specified with an optional cab, the machine’s operating weight is 6,625 lb (3 005 kg). Standard bucket capacity is .10 yd3 (.076 m3). “Like all Hyundai construction equipment, the Hyundai 9A series compact excavators address our customers’ needs for performance, convenience, serviceability, and, of course, safety,” Fuller said. “The new R30Z-9AK
and other 9A series compact excavators are loaded with standard features that provide exceptional value. Standard features such as thumb brackets, large dozer blades, hydraulic quickcouplers for attachments, and hydraulics-ready auxiliary piping provide the versatility you need to take on a variety of jobs.” Innovative, precisiondesigned hydraulic system technologies make the 9A series compact excavators fast, smooth and easy to control. Each model includes boom swing capability, enabling the operator to offset the boom 75 degrees to the left and 50 degrees to the right, which allows for close work alongside foundations and other structures, especially in congested areas. The spacious, ergonomically designed cab reduces noise and increases comfort and visibility. A tilting left-side console makes it easier for the operator to enter and exit the cab, and the left and right control levers are located for convenient access. The optional lever-pattern-change valve, positioned for easy access, allows joystick control to

Sennebogen Material Handlers At Work At Utah Metal Works Yard For the equipment needs of family-owned Utah Metal Works (UMW), purpose-built Sennebogen material handlers compare favorably to what’s available on the market. But it’s not just about machine price and features. Third-generation coowner, Chris Lewon has zero reservations about what the differentiator is whenever UMW is faced with an equipment buying decision. The local dealer, in this case Rasmussen Equipment Company, is the key. “Like it or not, equipment does have its downtime. It’s part of doing business,” explains Lewon. “The equipment gets beat up - it does - and it is going to go down at the wrong time, at the worst time. Your relationship with the dealer, and having immediate access to parts and
service, is extremely important.” Wheeled material handlers fit the bill UMW made the move to Sennebogen material handlers 12 years ago, when the company modernized its busy 10-acre, mostly non-ferrous metal scrap recycling yard in Salt Lake City. This upgrade included paving more than 90 percent of the yard with concrete, directing Lewon toward purpose-built wheeled machines and away from traditional converted tracked excavators. “We went with Sennebogen for a couple of reasons: One, access to some of the most common parts that typically fail, like hoses and fittings, and the accessibility to easily change in and out those parts. Second, we had a longstanding relationship with Rasmussen Equipment, which
sells and services Sennebogen equipment here locally,” says Lewon. “We thought that the service and having ready access to parts through a local dealer would be advantageous to us longer term.” Now, more than a decade later, UMW’s Sennebogen material handlers work in the company’s recycling yard. From a scheduled engine replacement all the way down to a sudden hydraulic hose replacement, having a well-stocked, well-trained dealer available nearby is essential to Lewon. “That $30 part all of a sudden becomes a $10,000 downtime incident,” he explains. “The cost of whatever fails is greatly exceeded in about two seconds of downtime, so that’s where it is really important to have a working relationship with the dealer’s parts
and service folks to keep this equipment up and running.” Company sizes up machines With its latest Sennebogen, Utah Metal Works made the move from the 52,800 lb. (23,950 kg) 821 M machines to the beefier 64,250 lb. (29,144 kg) 825 M. The larger machine offers more reach and lift capacity, yet maintains the maneuverability required on the compact Salt Lake City site. “The 825 is our workhorse, no question,” says Lewon. “We looked at the next size up and we could probably use it in most of the applications. However, there are some where a larger machine would be a little tight for our facility. The 825 seems to be a very good size for what we consider to be a medium-size processing facility. And we don’t do a tremendous amount of steel - ferrous material - and the largercapacity machines seem to be a little more geared for that.” A long history of scrap recycling Purchased in 1955 by three brothers, including Lewon’s grandfather Harry, Utah Metal Works quickly transitioned to the recycling focus it retains today under the direction of Don Lewon, Chairman of the Board and Don’s two sons, Mark, President and Chris, Vice President. “I tell people who are not familiar with the metals recycling business that we’re kind of a reverse wholesaler,” says Chris Lewon. “We buy from thousands of customers and then sell to a few hundred.”
Scrap metals from industrial operations ranging from aerospace and transportation, manufacturing to construction and demolition are trucked in to the UMW yard. They are sorted for sale to local and international customers, who use the cost-efficient recycled alloys in their manufacturing processes. “Most of the material we source is within a 500 mile radius,” says Lewon, “but when we package material, then it has the ability to travel internationally, as well as stay locally.” Shipments have been made to as far away as India, China and Korea, with a considerable amount heading to local foundries in the western US that make steel, aluminum, stainless and brass castings. “We are also open to the public,” says Lewon. “This gives us good exposure to all varieties of scrap.” Rotating grapples ‘extend’ operator’s hand UMW’s current Sennebogen units are equipped with four-tine grapples with rotators; the larger and busier of the machines has the Sennebogen attachment. “In the wire processing world,” explains Lewon, “having a rotating grapple is a huge advantage to unspool material, unload and place precisely.” That precision – “the grapple is almost an extension of the operator’s hand” – has earned good comments from truck drivers and other customers bringing scrap metal to the UMW yard. Metal is picked off trailers without ripping up the plywood and boards often in place as temporary
sides on the flatbeds. “I always joke with customers, ‘If you want, the operator can scratch your back with the grapple.’ Nobody ever takes me up on that,” Lewon says with a laugh. “They could do it. I don’t encourage it of course. But it is a compliment to the responsiveness of the hydraulics and the operator’s skill.” In the beginning, there was “a leap” for the operators first moving to purpose-built material handlers, “but there’s absolutely no way going back now,” he says. “It was a fairly quick learning curve. Once they had some time in that Sennebogen, they sure as heck didn’t want to go back.” Sennebogen’S hydraulically-raised maXCab “definitely gives an extreme advantage to our operators in being able to pinpoint and put material where they want it,” says Lewon. “They also have greater visibility when either unloading trucks or loading trucks, and also feeding the equipment we run, particularly the wire chopping equipment.” Strong dealer support UMW crews do some basic machine maintenance themselves, but depend on the well-stocked Rasmussen Equipment Company for the bulk of Sennebogen service, says Lewon. In the rare occasions when necessary, Sennebogen has been able to provide next-day service from its recently-expanded 100,000 sq. ft. parts facility in Stanley, NC, he commends. b Source: Sennebogen

US Contractor Makes Right Utility Connections Helping make all the right utility connections for New England is the job of Volvo CE-equipped gas and water work specialist, Barber Utilities. The legendary Volvo Ocean Race brings together Volvo customers and sailing enthusiasts alike, but not many would be inspired by the event to wrap his machine in the same distinctive blue livery. But that’s exactly what David Stavens did, following his tour of the Volvo CE factory in Belley, France. As the machines traveled down the assembly line, Stavens noticed the unchanging colors. “Everyone has yellow machines, so why not cover one in the ocean race blue?” says Stavens, adding the blue foil finish bears a remarkably close resemblance to Barber Utilities’ own company color. Stavens, founder and owner of Barber Utilities, is no newcomer to construction equipment or civil
engineering. Established in 1997, the company has built a solid reputation in the US state of Connecticut as a specialist in gas and water work, promoting it to main contractor status on many high profile projects. Barber Utilities also works with The Connecticut Water Company, installing water mains and services. Flawless finish Central Row is one such project that benefited from the efficiency and innovation provided by Volvo machines. Working for Connecticut Natural Gas, Barber Utilities was given the task of replacing a leaking six-inch (152 mm) cast iron low-pressure main with a two-inch (50 mm) plastic pressure main beneath the main road in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. This included unearthing layers of concrete buried beneath the asphalt road and ensuring the protection of the century-old main line. Operating only the blue-painted
Volvo ECR40D compact excavator, Barber Utilities’ five crewmembers worked 10-hour night shifts to complete the project on schedule. Stavens owes the success of the project to Volvo, stating: “The ECR40D is small, but it does a lot – it’s nimble enough to dig through the maze of utilities, plus its weight class makes it easy to transport to different jobs every day.” Such is the variety of services offered that Barber Utilities decided it needed suitably versatile machines to support them. The company has built up its machine fleet to 25 – nine from Volvo. The machines have been supplied by long-time dealer, Tyler Equipment and span the size classes, including L180F and L70F wheel loaders, and ECR40D, EC58D, EC88D, EC160C, 240B excavators, and a DD25 double drum compactor. Maintaining the flow The EC240B, EC160C and L70F recently completed a high profile project for Connecticut Natural Gas. The project – called the Coventry Expansion – tasked Barber Utilities
with the installation of a five kilometer (3.2 mi) gas main extension, stretching from the city of Mansfield to office buildings in nearby Coventry, Connecticut. This included inserting an eight-inch (203 mm) gas main inside of a 12-inch (305 mm) steel casing – no easy feat for an ordinary machine. Whatever the environment, the Volvo machines thrive every time,” says Stavens. “One day, you could be in sand and the next in rock, but Volvo ma-

chines always stand up to demands of the job.” All service and maintenance work is completed in-house, helping ensure the machines are working at their optimum levels. On hand to provide superior aftersales support is Tyler Equipment, which has worked with Barber Utilities for over 15 years. “It’s important for machines to perform as they’re intended,” adds Stavens. “I try to give my crew the best tools for the job and Volvo fits the bill. They’re
comfortable, easy to operate and most importantly, the operators feel confident behind the controls. When you’re digging around utility lines and don’t feel confident, that’s when something goes wrong.” Luckily, with the support of Tyler Equipment and Volvo machines, it’s blue skies ahead for David Stavens and Barber Utilities, which is already digging deep on a new high profile project. b Source: Volvo

Case IH Steiger 620 Tractor Sets New Performance Records New test results prove the Case IH Steiger 620 is the most fluid-efficient and highest drawbar horsepower tractor in the world. In recent tests at the University of Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory (NTTL), the Steiger 620 tractor set new records for drawbar fuel efficiency, drawbar horsepower and maximum pull — outperforming all models ever tested. “It’s one thing to generate a lot of horsepower,” said Mitch Kaiser, Case IH Steiger tractor marketing manager. “But it’s just as important to efficiently transfer that power throughout the tractor and, ultimately, to the ground and to the implement you’re pulling. That fluid efficiency — including diesel fuel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) — translates directly to lower operating costs.” In addition to the Steiger 620 achieving the highest marks recorded for any tractor ever tested at NTTL, the Steiger 580 scored the second-highest drawbar fuel economy ever recorded* at 17.53 horsepower hours per gallon — 6.63 percent higher than the tested competition in its power class.2 The complete Steiger tractor lineup (370 to 620 horsepower) features bestin-class power, torque and fluid efficiency. “Whether in the lab or in the field — where it really matters — our patented Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions technology provides the most power and best fuel economy, even when pulling the heaviest loads,” Kaiser said. “Because our engines run cleaner and cooler and the power they generate transfers efficiently via the transmission and driveline, our customers reap the benefits of better fluid efficiency plus additional power dedicated to the drawbar.” With Case IH engines, there’s no particulate filter to clean, no regeneration period and 600 operating hours between oil changes. Steiger engines are designed with maximum
power while saving diesel and DEF. Average fluid operating cost is 2.2 percent less across Steiger tractors (370 to 620 horsepower) than comparable competitive models. “In today’s farming economy, it all comes back to increased performance with lower operating costs,” Kaiser said. He added that, on average, Steiger tractors cost up to $1,000 less to own and maintain than comparable John Deere models. The NTTL is the officially designated tractor testing station for the United States and tests tractors according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) codes. Twenty-nine countries adhere to the OECD tractor test codes, with active test stations in 25 countries around the world. “These results are a true testament to our Customer Driven Product Design process,” Kaiser said. “Through focus groups and continuous testing, our customers design and build our tractors right alongside Case IH engineers — ensuring this equipment is built for High-Efficiency Farming.” In addition to feedback that helped deliver the best fluid efficiency, horsepower, drawbar pull and torque in the industry, Kaiser credits customers as the driving force behind other best-in-class features of Steiger tractors. These include up to a 20 percent faster and smoother shifting transmission, resulting in a 2 percent to 5 percent horsepower savings; tripoint oscillation for greater strength and durability when transferring power to the ground; a standard variable rate steering system for smoother operation; and standard, exclusive full-cab suspension for the best ride in the industry. Tilter Turns Ten Rototilt celebrates a decade in North America
T
hirty years ago a product was born that would change an entire industry. Rototilt now celebrates a decade since the establishment of our own dedicated North American company based in Ontario, Canada. “It has been an incredible journey to pro-
mote a product that totally transforms excavators and how they work,” said Gerry Mallory, General Manager Rototilt Inc. Although the tiltrotator concept is still relatively new to many in North America, contractors in the Nordic countries now
consider it standard equipment. “When we started to gradually introduce Rototilt in North America in the late ’90s, many people thought this was a product only for special applications or light duty work. We worked hard to con-
vince contractors of the tremendous time and labour savings alone with a Rototilt-equipped machine, and why it was standard equipment in Northern Europe, but it wasn’t easy. Let’s just say it takes time to change people minds and how they work,” said Mallory. Daughter company in North America The interest and sales gradually emerged and in 2007, Rototilt established their own North American daughter company to service and support the Canadian and U.S. markets. “One of the more unique challenges was to get our customers to tell others or share about how the tiltrotator changed their way of working and made their operations so much more efficient. It was such a big advantage against their competitors; they were very hesitant to share! It was almost like a secret,” said Mallory.
The history of Rototilt and the tiltrotator invention The tiltrotator, which was given the name Rototilt by Rune Norgren at Noreco in Umeå, Sweden, was invented in the middle of the 1980s. His son Roger has worked with the product ever since. “It was my father Rune who decided that the product would be called Rototilt,” explained Roger Norgren, who has seen the invention grow from a clever idea to a world-leading product. “The name Rototilt — despite being a protected trademark — is often used as a generic term for the entire tiltrotator product category, such is its recognition.” Rune saw the potential for developing this product concept into something big. The first tiltrotators were delivered to customers in the Umeå region of northern Sweden in 1986. At the same time, Indexator in Vindeln was looking for a possible complementary product to its rotator business. The rotator business at that time was primarily for the forest machine industry, and Indexator had one eye on the construction industry for new business opportunities. At this time, the financial system was in a very tough situation, and just like many companies during this period, Noreco got into financial difficulties. In 1992, Indexator had the opportunity to acquire the Noreco assets and purchased the product rights, the Rototilt brand and several technical applications. The CEO of Rototilt today,
Anders Jonsson, remember it had some tough times. “Naturally, it wasn’t all plain sailing,” admitted CEO Anders Jonsson. “The tiltrotator was an entirely new concept and there was nothing upon which to base component designs, materials selection, functions etc. We had to learn everything from scratch and set the parameters ourselves. It was a tough, challenging period.” The past 30 years with Rototilt have been characterized by innovation. Not just when it comes to the tiltrotator and its peripheral systems itself, but also the ideas surrounding how the tiltrotator can develop new opportunities for the construction industry. Two years ago the company name was changed from Indexator Rototilt Systems to just Rototilt. “We see an exciting, challenging potential in our new emerging markets like central Europe and North America where tiltrotators are still not used to the same extent as here at home, but where the market is developing step by step,” CEO Anders Jonsson explained. Rototilt has the vision of “One Rototilt on each excavator”. A number of OEM-partnerships are established with different machine manufacturers. “With Rototilt’s world leading product quality and durability, along with our established and proven product support in North America, we are well positioned for the growing demand,” Mallory concluded. b Source: Rototilt

Heavy Equipment Show Celebrates State Of The Industry With Milestone Edition Heavy equipment professionals of all types filled the halls of Mississauga’s International Centre for the 2017 edition of the National Heavy Equipment Show, which took place Thursday, April 6th and Friday, April 7th. This year’s edition, the show’s 20th anniversary edition, welcomed 13,370 buyers – a number roughly on par with the last edition, held in 2015. The focus on improving public infrastructure right across the county brought key decision makers and purchasers directly to this year’s show. “We were pleased to once again break 13,000 attendees,” said Mark Cusack, National Show Manager. “It speaks well of the state of the industry. Business is coming back. And
we’re very excited about the next show in 2019, which is sure to be even bigger and better!” This year, show attendees included a mix of industry professionals including the leaders of the construction, road building, land improvement, and infrastructure industries – along with job seekers, students and those training for specific trades, and some families with young children who were awestruck by the mammoth equipment. Special features of the 2017 edition included Rock to Road magazine’s presentation of the ‘Top 10 Under 40’, recognizing 10 outstanding individuals under the age of 40 from throughout Canada’s aggregates and roadbuilding industry; the CAED Power Breakfast, an
economic forecast presented by the Ontario Chapter of the Canadian Association of Equipment Distributors; the Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council (OAPC) Spring Operations Seminar; as well as many other exciting components including the Rental Pavilion, the Mechanics Hub Recruiting Here program, a focus on snow and ice removal equipment, and more. Thank you to Rock To Road Magazine, Mechanics Hub, the CAED, and OAPC for their continued support of the National Heavy Equipment Show. We now look forward to the next edition of this show in the spring of 2019; stay tuned to www.NHES. ca for updates. b Source: Master Promotions
