Make Room For Millennials At The Jobsite Construction has often been considered one of the last industries to embrace technology. That is starting to change, however, as construction companies look for new ways to change the mindset of those working at the jobsite. Enter the younger generation, otherwise known as millennials. They have grown up with apps and solutions to solve just about any system problem that arises. As the industry evolves, it will have to embrace more innovation in order to entice and appeal to millennials—and those even younger. Some of the emerging technology that millennials appear to be comfortable with that they might leverage on the jobsite include: • Drones • Artificial Intelligence • Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality • Smartphone Apps • Tablets • Wearables

May 2018 manager, JCA Electronics. There are advantages to having more software and devices on the jobsite besides attracting a younger workforce. It boils down to improvements in efficiency and productivity compared to older manual processes, says Barry Peyton, product manager, Intelliwave Technologies. These types of enhancements can be measured and traced back to bottom-line improvements across the construction site. “The right construction technology can centralize information and communication, improve safety, and reduce the amount of time spent on non-value-added tasks,” says Hollingsworth. The attitude and outlook that millennials have towards their life and job can help entice them to work in the construction field. Hollingsworth says, “Millennials want to add value, make an impact, and find meaning in what they’re doing.” What can be more rewarding than turning piles of dirt into buildings, roads, bridges and other construction? b

“Millennials have grown up attached to technology. Jobsites today are so far removed from what millennials have come to expect in their daily lives. They expect new solutions to do their job better, to get rid of manual processes,” says Chad Hollingsworth, Co-founder and President, Triax Technologies. They aren’t afraid of innovations, and they are willing to try things out and if it doesn’t work, they find a newer, better solution that will. One of the challenges is closing the gap between the more seasoned construction professional that might be more hesitant to leverage new systems, and the younger, more tech-savvy generation that might not have as much experience with traditional construction methods. “Older generations look to millennials for how to incorporate the tech into the jobsite,” says Paul Gomori, application engineering Source: AEM

The programs will focus on areas where significant barriers exist to the advancement of girls and women. For example, for every extra year a girl stays in school, her income can increase by 15 to 25 percent (USAID (2017)). Research shows that if women were to participate in the economy identically to men, they could add as much as $28 trillion or 26 percent to annual global GDP in 2025. AEM and EDA Team Up to Support CASE Scholarship

Darby Manufacturing Industrial Seating Specialists

T: 705-560-9421 | F: 705-560-4663 | www.darbymanufacturing.com

One of the manufacturing industry’s greatest challenges is inspiring young people to consider working toward a career in equipment manufacturing. However, a new initiative led by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)’s Ag Sector Board aims to change that fact by increasing the number of equipment-specific courses being taught in high schools today, to help expand awareness of and enthusiasm for the equipment manufacturing industry. With help from the Equipment Dealers Association (EDA), the two organizations have awarded 32 educators from 15 states partial scholarships for certification in equipment courses starting this summer. The courses, offered through the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE), will qualify teachers to begin teaching the courses this coming fall and

reaching over 2,200 students in the 2018-2019 school year. “By leading a teacher scholarship program in partnership with Equipment Dealers Association, we have a great opportunity to help make students more aware of and excited about the opportunities on the equipment side of the Ag industry,” said Curt Blades, Senior Vice President of Ag Services at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. “AEM is fully committed to workforce development and we are proud to help provide 32 teachers the training that will help them fully engage their students in the opportunities available in agriculture.” Since the launch of the CASE curriculum, more than 2,500 teachers have achieved certification to teach its classes. However, only about 90 of those certifications are in equipment-specific courses. AEM and EDA hope

to increase that number through this scholarship program. “Since its inception, EDA’s Foundation, the Equipment Dealers Foundation, has provided scholarships for students looking to begin or further a career in Ag,” says Joe Dykes, VP of Industry Relations for EDA. “Now we are thrilled for the opportunity to partner with AEM and CASE to promote the value of an agricultural education from the other side of the classroom. Sponsoring scholarships for teachers is consistent with one of the Foundation’s most important goals, workforce development. The specific programs we’re sponsoring are aimed at closing the skills gap, or the gap between supply and demand for equipment technicians – a major issue in our industry right now. We believe working together to get people excited to teach and learn about agriculture is the best way to grow and sustain interest in our industry.” The teacher certification initiative is just one Continued on page 10

piece of AEM’s broader, comprehensive workforce development initiative crossing the agriculture equipment and construction industries. To emphasize local workforce development, AEM and EDA members located near the scholarship recipients have an opportunity to connect directly with the teacher and their students. Manufacturers and dealers are encouraged to bring the teacher and students to their facility for hands-on

experiences beginning this fall. This supports longterm relationship building with the teacher and the students and develops a sustainable grassroots effort to increase the number of qualified service technicians and technologists entering the workforce. “We expect agriculture teachers to be ‘jacks-ofall-trades’ as they must teach a variety of agricultural, natural resources, and mechanic related subjects while enhancing core-academic disciplines,

such as science and mathematics,” said Miranda Chaplin, CASE Operations/Outreach Director. “However, agriculture teachers often have minimal training in how to teach mechanics related content and skills. Funding provided by AEM and EDA is essential for teachers to gain cutting-edge professional development experiences with CASE to enhance their teaching practices in order to implement STEM-based agricultural mechanics courses. The long-term impact

of this support will benefit and spark interest in thousands of high school agriculture students.” CASE is a multi-year approach to agriscience education with rigorous educator training requirements and hands-on, inquiry focused learning activities for students. While CASE currently offers ten courses, the Agricultural Power and Technology (APT) and Mechanical Systems in Agriculture (MSA) prepare students for the wide array of career opportunities in agricultural engineering. Students are immersed in inquiry-based exercises that emphasize in the math and science of agricultural mechanics and engineering. During the CASE Institute, teachers will spend 80 hours working through nearly every lesson in the yearlong curriculum and learning how to deliver lessons in an inquiry-based way that will shift focus in the classroom from teacher-led to studentdirected learning. b Source: AEM

Terex Trucks’ Robust Machines Make The Grade In Matlock Calcium carbonate and limestone processor, Longcliffe, is using a number of Terex Trucks’ proven haulers to move premium limestone and recycled materials around its quarry in Derbyshire. The UK’s leading supplier of calcium carbonate and limestone, Longcliffe, supplies a variety of industries from animal feed manufacturers to glass, plastic, adhesive and construction businesses. Revered for its versatility, high purity limestone extracted from Longcliffe’s Brassington Moor Quarry near Matlock is an essential component of feeds for poultry, pigs and cattle. Calcium carbonate plays an important role in animal nutrition as a dietary supplement and an antacid. Founded by John Shields in 1927, Longcliffe is a family-owned business focused on continuously achieving customer satisfaction, serving the local community and playing its

role to protect the environment. Hidden in the heart of Derbyshire, Longcliffe’s quarry is home to one of the purest and largest limestone basins in Great Britain. Running an aroundthe-clock operation, the company extracts, processes and delivers more than one million tonnes of limestone and dolomite products annually. Helping to keep production on site at an all-time high, Longcliffe is using Terex Trucks’ proven off-highway machines to move material around its site. Breaking from the norm Longcliffe’s partnership with Terex Trucks was first established in 2013 when it issued a tender to replace a dump truck in its fleet that had come to the end of its lifespan. “The company had been happily buying machines from a particular brand, but when I came into the business we were looking to replace a dumper and I wanted to see what else was out there,”

explains Chris Wainwright, operations director at Longcliffe. “Terex Trucks and its dealer, TDL Equipment, came up with an offer that was as good as the one our existing equipment supplier was offering. This gave us the opportunity to try something different.” TDL supplied a 55-tonne payload TR60 on site at the quarry near Matlock for demonstration purposes, and that’s when optimism within Longcliffe started to build. While the proven rigid hauler impressed, Longcliffe required a machine with a bigger payload, which is where the TR70 found favour. “The feedback on Terex Trucks’ rigid hauler was good, and following tests on fuel consumption, cycle times and carrying capacity, we wanted to give the machine a try,” says Wainwright. The Brassington Moor Quarry is split into two working areas that are connected by a tunnel, which was initially somewhat of a concern for TDL’s area sales manager, Gaz Bourne. Not leaving anything to chance, he was meticulous in ensuring that the TR70 was indeed Continued on page 13

Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · Our Readers Are Your Buyers complete with a 15-degree sloping tail chute and exhaust heating for low material retention and cleaner dumping. The TR70’s haul cycles are kept short thanks to smooth acceleration which helps to keep operators comfortable. Furthermore, to aid productivity, the rigid hauler boasts a spacious air-conditioned cabin with an airsuspension seat to reduce operator fatigue. It also has ergonomic controls, large mirrors, a deluxe operator’s seat, DAB radio and a colour reverse camera to provide excellent visibility. The hydraulic disc brakes also deliver better operator control, while the transmission retarder decreases brake wear, reducing ownership costs and increasing machine availability. “Terex Trucks’ dumpers are built to do what they should do and with our new TR70, we’re getting additional body volume through the side extensions,” concludes Wainwright. “The fuel consumption of both the articulated and rigid dumpers is better than other trucks we’ve got and the aftermarket service and response times we’ve received from TDL have been good. There’s every chance that as our older machines come up for renewal, we’ll replace those with Terex Trucks’ dumpers too.” b

the right truck for the site, triple-checking the dimensions of the tunnel against the rigid hauler. Fit for purpose With one TR70 working well transporting blasted rock from the face of the quarry to the processing plant, Longcliffe took the decision in May 2014 to add another Terex Trucks machine to its fleet. However, this time the business opted for an articulated dump truck in the form of the versatile TA400. “We were looking to replace another rigid dumper,” says Wainwright. “We’d always traditionally had rigids at this site but because of the application, which is more tip work and running overburden, we also had the need for a machine with low sides to work in unison with one of our smaller stock shovels. That’s why we started looking at articulated trucks. “We quickly got in contact with Gaz at TDL to get an idea of what Terex Trucks could offer. We did some tests, brought in some machines from other companies and ran trials looking at turnaround times, payloads, fuel consumption etc. After all that we were most impressed with the Terex Trucks TA400.” Crafted with almost 70 years of manufacturing expertise, the innovative articulated framed truck achieves a payload of 38 tonnes and is powered by a six-cylinder, Scania DC13 EU Stage 3B compliant engine that achieves

a gross power of 331 kW (444 hp) and a maximum torque of 2,255 Nm (1663 lbf ft). Renowned for high uptime and reliability, the TA400 has great traction and an effective power-toweight ratio to ensure material is moved as quickly as possible in all conditions – providing excellent productivity and low cost of operation. Additionally, the machine features a spacious and ergonomic cabin, complete with a commanding view for maximum operator comfort. Happily operating two machines from Terex Trucks within its large fleet of equipment, Longcliffe placed TDL at the top of its call list in May 2017 when the time came to acquire a new truck. Pleased with the overall performance of the TR70, Longcliffe challenged the Scottish manufacturer to modify the truck slightly to increase its body volume by adding side extensions and tweaking the machine to make it a perfect fit for its operator, Andre Needham. “I gave Terex Trucks a long list of specifications to make the truck just right for me and they didn’t disappoint,” says Needham. “I’ve got 40 years’ experience in quarrying and I’ve operated a lot of equipment but the TR70 is by far the most comfortable ride – even after 30 to 40 rounds a day.” Well suited to the application, which is made up of hard rock, the Motherwell-built rigid dump truck was created to journey on through the tough-

est terrains. The TR70 is fitted with a Detroit Diesel MTU-2000TA 12 cylinder, 24-litre engine that provides a maximum torque of 3,323 Nm (2,450 lbf ft) and a gross power of 567 kW (760 hp). The proven performer, which provides excellent rimpull thanks to a resilient drivetrain and rear axle configuration, is constructed with an Allison H6620AR, 6-speed transmission. Its effective gearing, coupled with optimum weight distribution, means the machine can move more using less fuel in less time. The high capacity body of the machine comes Source: Terex

How Important Is Trucking To An Economy? The trucking industry is an integral part of any economy. Practically every industry relies on trucking for the delivery of materials, in order to manufacture or produce the product and then deliver the product to the marketplace. Look around your home or office, chances are that each product from the furniture to the clothes you’re wearing to the food you eat has seen the inside of a truck. Most aspects of everyday life are only possible because of the hard work of truck drivers and trucking companies. The trucking industry is helping people get the things they need everyday. We often think of trucking, solely being a truck and a driver. In Manitoba, Trucking directly employs over 28,000 people and contributes more than 2 Billion to Manitoba’s GDP annually. With more than 475 for hire trucking companies in Manitoba and our geographical location, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Pembina/ Emerson border crossing, is the 5th busiest CA/ US crossing. As a result, Highway #75 moves 19

Billion in trade between Manitoba and the United States. Trained truck drivers are integral for the trucking industry to run smoothly and efficiently, however there are many moving parts and pieces to a trucking company. Like most businesses, trucking has many departments/ teams behind the scenes and on the front lines. Dispatchers, Maintenance Facilities, HR departments, Customer Service, Logistics and Supply, Business Development and Administrative Support, to mention a few. Between 2016 and 2025 the trucking industry in Manitoba will need to fill more than 8,200 jobs including; 3,400 new drivers and more than 2,000 Heavy Duty Technicians. That would equate to almost 1 trained driver required every day for the next 10 years. All these numbers are staggering, but it’s safe to say, any disruption in truck transportation services will cause lots of economic disruptions in all sectors of the economy. b Source: Trucking.mb.ca

Front Page Story

All Roads Lead To Safety Join STA’s First Responders Fundraising Campaign

T

he Saskatchewan Trucking Association Board of Directors, staff and membership, along with the Canadian Trucking Alliance and other provincial trucking associations, have sent their sincerest condolences to the victims, families and friends of those whose lives were lost in the truckbus collision near the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 in Saskatchewan on April 6, 2018. Trucking association members from across this country are all part of small-town Saskatchewan. Our children play hockey, they travel the highways, and this incident has struck home for each one of us. Over this past week, there has been a tremendous amount of support and outreach in the wake of this tragedy. Now it’s our turn to step up as an industry, locally and nationally, to show that our top priority is promoting a culture of safety. The trucking industry

has always been generous and answered the call to assist Canadians in times of need. We have heard your voices from across the country that you want to help. The STA, with the assistance of CTA, is coordinating a national fundraising effort – titled All Roads Lead to Safety – for first responders in Saskatchewan. They are the men and women who are at the front lines after a disastrous event and deserve our support for their commitment and bravery. The funds raised will be given to the Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association to support mental health initiatives, counselling and training for first responders. Once the dust settles from this tragedy, there will be a bevy of individuals who need access to support services to cope with the traumas they have witnessed. The first responders in Saskatchewan are volunteers who give of their time freely to help others in need. Eighty

percent of firefighters are also medical first responders. This organization has a minimal budget of $10,000 for assisting with counselling, training, peer counselling and stress management education. STA will begin raising money immediately and asks that all donations be sent no later than May 15, 2018. Your cheque is to be payable to: Saskatchewan Volunteer Fire Fighters Association c/o Saskatchewan Trucking Association 103 Hodsman Road Regina, SK S4N 5W5 The SVFFA will issue a receipt to each company that donates. Over the next few weeks the STA and CTA will continue to provide a strong and united voice expressing support for our fellow Canadians when they are down. The trucking industry, which plays a vital role in our economy, values the lives of everyone who shares the roads with us.

This is why our message “All Roads Lead to Safety” needs to be a strong one in the coming weeks. Please don’t delay in joining this important fundraising effort. Show Canada how the trucking industry stands up and takes leadership in our respective communities. Please donate now, with thanks. b Source: BCTA
