The provincial government is investing $50,000 in Helmets to Hardhats Canada, a national, notfor-profit organization that provides apprenticeship training to current or former members of the Armed Forces or Reserves who are seeking a civilian career. “This program complements our efforts to support apprenticeship in New Brunswick,” said Premier David Alward. “Our Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy already highlights work being done to attract teens into the trades through the New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program as well as efforts to implement a women-intrades program. Providing financial support to help our veterans move into a trade will help us address the increasing demand for skilled trade workers in New Brunswick. “A strong and vibrant labour market is vital to economic growth and job
creation,” he added. “Our government’s actions and investments, guided by our Economic Development Action Plan, will ensure that, together with our partners, we can rebuild New Brunswick.” The program is an innovative opportunity for members of the military as well as unions, contractors, owners and associations within Canada’s building, construction and maintenance industries to match employment needs with potential employment openings. “This program will help veterans, especially our younger veterans, make the transition from military service to good jobs in the skilled trades, where we need more workers,” said Brian Macdonald, Legislative Secretary to the Premier ror Intergovernmental Affairs and Military Affairs. “Veterans are among our best citizens and our hardest workers. The west-to-east pipeline, oil
and gas development as well as mining are going to grow our economy. We will need skilled workers to continue building New Brunswick. Our veterans should be part of that prosperity.” This initiative is funded under the CanadaNew Brunswick Labour Market Development Agreement. “The building trades unions are proud to partner with the New Brunswick government to provide training and jobs for our veterans,” said Andrew Dawson, President of the New Brunswick Carpenters’ Union. “The construction unions recognize the valuable contribution that members of the Canadian Forces have made to our country, as well as their outstanding qualities and experience that can transfer into a successful career in the skilled trades.” Alward and Julian Fantino, Federal Minister of Veterans Affairs, celebrated the investment and spoke about the importance of this initiative during a fundraising dinner held recently in Fredericton. b

Brand New Industry SuperEvent Coming In 2014 Master Promotions Ltd., Canada’s largest independent trade and consumer event management company is proud to present the Quebec Forestry & Construction Expo, co-locating with Salon CAM Québec, April 25-26, 2014 at the Centre de foires in Quebec City. “These two events are a perfect combination and offer up a huge opportunity for exhibiting companies to broaden their customer base with the creation of this super-event,” said National Show Manager Mark Cusack. “The trucking industry works closely with the forestry and road building industry, and this natural partnership will produce a one-stop shopping experience for the many products, services and technology common to both,” explained Cusack. Combined, these two events will have the poten-
tial to showcase 185,000 square feet of exhibit space and offer unparalleled sales opportunities to exhibiting companies. The Quebec Forestry & Construction Expo will cater to those in forestry, construction, heavy equipment owners/operators, municipal workers and other facets of these industries. Evolving from as far back as the late 1990’s, including Logfor ‘98 and more recently, Wood Week, the need was there then and it is now for an event of this nature to help industry stakeholders make informed decisions about product and equipment purchases. This industry showcase is modeled off the recent success of the Canada North Resources Expo in Prince George, British Columbia, the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show in New Brunswick and Expo Grands Travaux
in Montreal, Quebec. The formula works and the timing is right for an event of this nature in Quebec. Salon CAM Québec will draw buyers from the trucking, logging, road building and other related industries from all over Quebec. Trucks are a “driving force” in the forestry, construction and road building industries. This makes it a natural fit to share the venue and audience with the Quebec Forestry & Construction Expo. The buyers for these industries will be common to both events. Salon CAM Québec will have a strong emphasis on trucks from the class 5-8 market, which includes transport trucks, logging trucks, fuel trucks, dump trucks and other big rigs. The event will also showcase trucks from the lighter duty market, including pickup trucks, utility vans and city delivery trucks. If you work in or out of a truck, or supply the products to those who do, this is YOUR show. More details will be unveiled shortly. Please visit www.EFCQ.ca or www. CAMQC.ca for regular updates. b

New Bandits Versatile For Land Clearing Operations In response to increasing demand for specialty land clearing equipment, Bandit Industries has enhanced its line of track carriers. Leading the charge is the all-new Model 3750. Designed to operate with extremely low ground pressure, this all-new machine can be equipped with either a mulching forestry
mower head, or a hydrostatic stump grinding head. The Model 3750 combines the smaller size and lighter weight of the Model 3500 with the larger cab and forestry mower head of the Model 4000, and it rides on a CAT 315 undercarriage with 800mm-wide pads. This gives the Model 3750 a ground pressure of just
3.9 PSI. “We’ve had requests from numerous customers for a high-powered forestry mower that can better traverse soft and sensitive ground,” said Jason Morey, Bandit’s Large and Small Equipment Sales Manager. “The Model 3750 was built precisely for this purpose, but it’s also proven to be
an excellent machine for general-purpose land clearing thanks to the wide tracks and lower weight.” The Model 3750 is available with up to 275 horsepower and features an 84inch wide Bandit-designed forestry mower than can mulch up to a height of 72 inches. Like all Bandit track carriers, the Model 3750 features a deluxe operators cab that includes a six-way adjustable seat, electronic controls with state-of-the-art monitoring systems, rear-view cameras, on-board audio systems, and full climate control for operator comfort in all environments. The Model 3750 cab tilts forward for convenient access to vital hydraulic systems, allowing for easy maintenance. An interchangeable 40-inch diameter stump grinder wheel is also available. The Model 3750 joins an expanding line of dedicated land clearing machines from Bandit Industries. After an extensive period of field evaluation, the compact Model 3000 is also gaining considerable popularity as a lightweight, highly mobile land clearing machine ideally
suited for construction site and right-of-way clearing where space is limited. Featuring up to 142 horsepower, a dedicated 72-inch wide forestry mower and a CAT 307 steel-track undercarriage, the Model 3000 can easily power through material while reaching areas difficult to access with larger machines. “What we’ve been hearing most on the Model 3000 is its usable power and capability compared to its size,” said Morey. “Most machines using a mulching head of this size have less horsepower. With the CAT undercarriage and available power, there really isn’t any other clearing machine in the same category as the Model 3000.” The Model 3000 and
November 2013 Model 3750 join the Model 3500, Model 4000 and Model 5000 in Bandit’s track carrier line-up. All are ROPS/FOPS/OPS certified and feature CAT steeltrack undercarriages. Intermediate-scale land clearing operations are ideal for the Model 3000 and Model 3500, while the Model 4000 and Model 5000 specialize in large scale clearing operations. The Model 3750 fits neatly in the middle, delivering a perfect combination of power, productivity, manoeuvrability and class-leading flotation to land clearing professionals. Learn more about Bandit’s line of track carriers and other land clearing machines at www.banditchippers.com or by calling 1-800-952-0178. b

INCREASE YOUR
BUYING POWER
By reducing your equipment purchase to a simple periodic lease payment you’ve increased the buying power of your budgets. David Tsubouchi To Head Ontario College Of Trades Ron Johnson, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Ontario College of Trades, the first self-regulating professional body to oversee the training, qualification and conduct of skilled tradespeople in the world, recently announced the appointment of lawyer, businessman and former Ontario Cabinet Minister David Tsubouchi to the position of Registrar and CEO, effective September 9, 2013. Tsubouchi replaces outgoing College Registrar and CEO Bob Guthrie, who has announced his decision to retire. “David Tsubouchi brings a unique balance of both public- and privatesector experience, as well as an understanding of how professional self-regulation, rather than direct government control, is better for tradespeople, for industry and for the public,” said Johnson. “He has the vision and knowhow to ensure the College of Trades continues the
crucial work our members and stakeholders have begun to ensure Ontario continues to build a workforce capable of meeting our economic needs well into the future.” Tsubouchi, who served as the Progressive Conservative MPP for Markham from 1995 until 2003, held a number of high-level cabinet posts in the Ontario government under Premiers Mike Harris and Ernie Eves. He was Minister of Community and Social Services (1995 to 1996), Minister of Consumer and Commercial Relations (1996 to 1999), Solicitor General of Ontario (1999 to 2001), Chair of the Management Board of Cabinet (2001 to 2003) and Minister of Culture (2002 to 2003). Under his leadership as the Minister of Consumer and Commercial relations, the self-managed organizations Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO), Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO) and Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) were created, providing industry driven organizations that brought more accountability to the public and reduced the size of government. onday August 26th was a day not unlike any other. I came to the office, ready for a day of taking care of business at the Supply Post. I opened my email to find a note from my contact at the Dressta/ Liugong office in the USA asking if I might be available for a press tour at the Dressta factory in the south of Poland. Poland? I have to admit that on my list of places to see in the world, Poland really wasn’t near the top. I didn’t know much about the country, other than its famed perogies, but I quickly accepted the invitation. These opportunities don’t come along every day. As you read on, I hope my words will help you discover what I did about this dedicated group.
South Africa and China. A world event was truly underway. We arrived at our hotel in Sandowiecz, roughly 3.5 hours drive south of Warsaw. Upon check-in, we were greeted by Leslaw Holysz, CEO of Dressta and Jordan Huang, President Assistant for Liugong who invited us down to the hotel restaurant for the reception. In addition to my travelling companions from the bus, I was introduced also to writers from Germany, Holland and the Czech Republic – there were about 35 of us in all. It was clear from the outset that the people at Dressta were enthusiastic about their organization and this event. Also present was Tony Dobrzan´ski, Director – Technology & Technical Services. gong purchased the Dressta brand in early 2012. Their influence was quickly apparent as we pulled in and saw Dressta and Liugong products side by side in the holding yard. Inside, overhead cranes were at work with technicians on the ground constructing various Dressta Dozers. In addition to their dozer line available in North America, the company also produces two models of pipelayers and wheel loader models for the European markets. There are plenty of machine specs on their website at www.dresstanorth america.com, so I think it’s more important for me to focus on what I saw – the inside view of things, if you will. There is a distinct level of importance put into the details on each machine. This facility is a major employer for the city, and with its long history of building fine products (which for construction machinery, stretches back to the 1960’s), the office staff and shop people take a lot of pride in what they do. After a thorough discussion and walk through the shop it was time to see these machines in action. Outside demonstration It was a fairly brisk day, temperatures around 5C. Being a fairly warmblooded person, I found myself, by choice, as the only person there without

es at the Dressta factory in Poland. By Jeff Watson a jacket. I think over the 60 minutes we were outside I was offered a jacket no less than 7 times by various Dressta staff. Tomasz Dys introduced……….… wait……..….a note about Tomasz. He was to be our MC for the field demonstration. As the Deputy Director of Technology and Technical Services for the company, this made sense. Tomasz is a very interesting fellow. He is Polish, born and raised in Stolowa Wola, but spent 6+ years studying in North America. Detroit to be specific. He confided in me late in the day that his favorite thing about North America was a Tim Horton’s French Vanilla and a box of Timbits. He also described in great detail about a service call he went on to a mine in South America. The journey took him through 4 connections over a 30+ hour period, just to arrive at the jobsite and perform the 1 hour job required by his client. How’s that for dedication? Anyway, he MC’d the outside performance, and introduced each machine with its size and weight, and gave us a quick list of special features or highlights. He admitted to me later that he did it all by memory, as he had run out of time to study the flash card notes he had made. To me, people like Tomasz are what makes Dressta unique. He knows
his stuff, he’s confident, and gets things done, no matter the situation. The demonstration showed the range of loaders and dozers created in the factory and gave us all the opportunity to shoot some nice photos. The outdoor portion concluded with a round of champagne delivered by a Dressta wheel loader bucket, which was a fitting way to end the factory portion of our day. We ventured to a group lunch up the road a few miles, where I met and chatted with David Beatenbough. He’s the Vice President of Liugong, entrusted with task of helping guide Dressta into its next phase. He talked in the post-tour press conference about growing their business into other markets worldwide and increasing their dealer network. They are investing in their engineering, marketing and most importantly, their people. Everyone I met is dedicated to the Dressta product line and to serving their customers. Post-tour Many of the international journalists departed later in the day on Thursday. As I had come from so far, I stayed an extra day at the end of the trip to catch some sights. I decided to go and tour the Auschwitz WWII camp, which was about four hours west by car. I felt a certain obligation to pay my respects to
those who suffered in that horrific place. In the afternoon, I ventured back through the city of Krakow. This is a place I’ll hopefully return to one day. The main square in the downtown area is magnificent. Shops, restaurants, art galleries all set in a modern stone courtyard, and complimented by St. Mary’s Basilica. Every hour, a trumpeter climbs to the top of the 262’ spire and out of each of the four corners of the top floor - plays the “Hejnał Mariacki”, which is the five note anthem. The final of those four short performances is traditionally cut short in honour of the trumpeter in the 12th Century who was fatally shot in the throat while performing the anthem as a warning of an impending Mongol attack. The journey home Friday was a long journey back to Vancouver, and while I was truly exhausted, I knew that this had been the experience of a lifetime. I want to thank all the Dressta people I met that week and say that I appreciate their hospitality. It’s plainly obvious to me that they do not intend to rest on their great history as a construction equipment manufacturer. The company is expanding across the globe, and has a very bright future. I wish you all the best. b

Manufacturers of complex products in industries such as Aerospace, Energy Equipment and Heavy Machinery, face particular challenges in reducing production cycle times, while maintaining quality and
meeting regulatory requirements due to long production cycles. Proficy for Manufacturing Discrete provides digitized standard operating procedures, advanced dispatch capabilities and structured capture of quality data to support real-time decision making and continuous process improvement, especially in complex, engineerto-order and build-to-order environments. “PfMD incorporates the best practices of GE’s own world-class manufacturing businesses,” said Don Busiek, General Manager, Manufacturing Software for GE Intelligent Platforms. “It incorporates our learnings in real-world discrete manufacturing environments,
programs, in the public interest. One of the College’s key mandates is to strengthen consumer protection. Among measures to ensure tradespeople in Ontario are skilled, qualified and professional, the
College has launched a simple, searchable register that allows consumers and employers to look up the credentials and licensing status of members who work in certified skilled trades. “I’m very pleased to be
able to offer my expertise and understanding of both business and government to my role in this important position,” said Tsubouchi. “I’m confident that the College and its members will continue to work with our many stakehold-
ers in the interest of all Ontarians, whether they work in the trades or employ them in their homes or businesses. Together, we can continue to pave the way for a bright economic future for the province.” b
as well as our 25 years of MES expertise. In addition, we are seeing amazing results from implementation at GE sites.” • 70% reduced warranty investigation time; • 10% reduced WIP Inventory; • 20% reduced product cycle times; • 25% reduced rework and scrap; • 20% reduced manufacturing costs. PfMD is adaptable to multiple manufacturing environments ranging from the production of long-cycle, complex products engineered to order, to discrete products being configured to order. By digitizing work processes, PfMD enables the entire manufacturing workforce, including operators, production supervisors, manufacturing engineers and quality engi-
neers to produce products faster, more efficiently, and consistently. PfMD has been designed to handle environments where more than 100,000 routes, hundreds of thousands of documents, and tens of thousands of quality forms are required to support the products being produced. Integrated with GE’s Proficy Manufacturing suite for consistency across products, PfMD provides standard connectivity to ERP and PLM systems for rapid deployments. It is modularized to deploy in phases for near-term and long-term benefits and features advanced architecture to integrate with existing plant floor controls and operations. A key feature of PfMD is its Dispatch capability which enables operations to be dispatched to lines and/or work cells based on the route definitions in the form of jobs to be executed. The queue of jobs associated with a line and/ or a work cell is made up of comparable operations from multiple orders. Also, the product’s documentation management capabilities allows production supervisors to manage the documents utilized within the system, including the creation, modification, and revision control of documents, which can be routed through an approval process prior to production. In addition, PfMD provides detailed order scheduling, product management, order execution, route management, labor tracking, WIP management, manufacturing instructions for operations. Genealogy and Traceability features of PfMD capture a permanent record of as-built product data, including the material/BOMs, along with all quality data and routes/ operations. The solution also captures quality data associated with the product and/or process through quality forms and configures the qualifications and/ or certification levels of equipment and personnel to ensure the right people
and/or equipment are allowed to perform the operations (i.e., execute the jobs). Digitized information enables true real-time digitized WIP Visibility and Management to reduce cost and improve product manufacturing cycles. PfMD also Streamlines Supply Chain Management
by capturing supplier and outsourced operation data. “Digitizing MES processes is a critical enabler for achieving effective operations and supply chain optimization,” concluded Busiek. “PfMD delivers optimized performance today and a forward-looking foundational path for success tomorrow.” b

Designed For The Toughest Offshore Environments & Engineered For Extremes The range of robust handling and lifting equipment supplied by the J D Neuhaus company is currently in use around the world on jack-up rigs, semi-submersibles, drill ships and FPSO vessels. Their product range incorporates both air- and hydraulically-powered hoists, with individual lifting capacities ranging from 550lbs to 100 metric tons. These products can also be incorporated into single or double girder overhead travelling cranes, underslung cranes with special low headroom trolley designs, together with purpose designed slewing jib cranes. Hoists can be supplied for specific function duties such as BOP handling (up to 200 metric tons), as well as providing virtually unlimited lifting and general load movement solutions including both oblique and horizontal pulling under pre-determined conditions.
A BOP handling unit incorporating four J D Neuhaus type EH50 airoperated monorail hoists has been supplied to the Maersk offshore rig Guardian, for synchronized BOP lifting and handling during both pre- and postdrilling operations. Two hoists are mounted on each of the twin parallel overhead rails, with each hoist providing 50 metric ton load and 20 meter lift capacities for between deck operations. With the two sets of hoists operating together, a combined lift capacity of 200 metric tons was made available. Synchronized operation of all linear movement and lifting operations of individual, paired or all the four hoists when used in conjunction, was provided with JDN type F multi-function controllers, incorporating the main air emergency stop together with a load-monitoring device.
The largest purposebuilt offshore crane system constructed to date by J D Neuhaus was a semi portal, A-frame design supporting twin overhead horizontal track beams, each fitted with a single hydraulic EH 40-H hoist unit. These hoists can be operated individually or simultaneously from one controller, and when used in conjunction a total lift of 80 metric tons is possible with a 12 meter lift height being provided over a 7.5 meter span. A JDN Profi 6 TI-H hoist with 6 metric ton lift capacity was also supplied to cover other operational and service requirements. The crane was specified to comply fully with offshore duties including operating at temperatures down to -20ºC. Survival conditions had also to be been maintained in turbulent weather conditions to cover inclines from the horizontal of the rig of 3º with the crane loaded or 27º when un-
loaded. All the JDN products combine a rugged build quality with high performance, 100% reliability and the utmost in safety. Their JDN Profi TI hoists are also 100% duty rated and require low maintenance, so eliminating unnecessary downtime. The products are also impervious to dust and damp working conditions and operate within a temperature range of -20ºC to +70ºC. Where supplied for offshore operation, on either rigs or ocean going vessels, then the equipment is provided with a full ‘Offshore Package’ which includes extra corrosion protection to cater for rough, salty weather conditions. variations. All hoists are also fully ATEX rated for operation in hazardous or potentially explosive atmospheres to a standard classification of Ex II 2 GD IIA T4 / II 3 GD IIB T4. Standard safety features of the hoists include integrated adjustable overload protection for load ratings of one metric ton and above. A self-adjusting fail-safe braking mechanism is fitted, together with trolley anti-climb drop devices and an emergency stop switch integrated in the main power supply. An emergency lowering device can also be supplied for the Profi TI hoists covering lift capacities from 25 to 60 metric tons. This involves fitting a separate air tank, with two additional buttons also incorporated into the hand controllers. This air reservoir is automatically maintained at the full working air pressure and acts as a positive emergency braking system when required. The device becomes operable in the event of a severe reduction or total loss of mains air pressure, with a two-handed control operation provided to avoid unintentional lowering.
One control button selects between normal hoist operation and emergency lowering, with a second button providing braking to ensure a controlled lowering and safe grounding of the suspended load under the action of its own dead weight. Additional optional safety features include rack and pinion trolley drives, Delta-P overload protection and load monitoring together with air, hydraulic, radio or electrical remote controllers. Special purpose hoists engineered for extreme conditions can be supplied to cover operations at arctic temperatures down to 45ºC, together with underwater hoists for operation down to 70 meters below water levels. Certification by Det Norske Veritas can also be provided on request, to comply with safety requirements involving applications for offshore cranes as well as power driven hoists. The standard ATEX classification is according to EC Directive on Hazardous Locations 94/9/ EEC with increased spark protection also available if required to a rating EX II 2 GD IIC T4. b

The pandas must be proud! Trees Ontario and CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) recently teamed up for the second year to help “green” the Toronto Zoo. Held Sept. 28, the CAA SCO employee-exclusive event brought together more than 60 participants, mostly CAA SCO associates and their families, to take part in a half-day tree planting activity. In total, the local reforestation project resulted in the planting of 285 trees, and helped spread awareness about the benefits of tree planting and green urban spaces. “Part of CAA SCO’s commitment to making a more positive impact on the environment comes from our members and employees,” said Teresa Di Felice, Director Community & Government Relations & Driver Training. “We are proud to partner with Trees Ontario and this partnership has paved the way to create a green legacy for future generations. Through our 2013 community tree planting efforts, CAA SCO in partnership with Trees Ontario planted over 1,200 trees in one day alone. We look forward to bringing more green into our communities through
this evolving partnership.” In 2012, approximately 60 people participated in a similar CAA SCO sponsored-event at the Toronto Zoo. CAA SCO has been a long-time supporter of Trees Ontario. Earlier this year in May, the two organizations partnered to host three public community planting events in Kingston, Midhurst and Windsor. In total, more than 300 participants were involved and nearly 2,000 trees planted. “It was a pleasure to plant with both of these partners once again, and I’m very pleased with the overwhelming turnout,” said Rob Keen, CEO, Trees Ontario. “These new trees will help contribute to a healthy zoo environment and healthy surrounding community by cleansing the air of pollutants, providing shade for Zoo visitors and the animals, and helping mitigate the effects of climate change.” Trees Ontario recognizes that everyone plays a role in ensuring a healthy, natural environment for the future. The organization’s history of success is due to various contributions, including that of its partners and corporate sponsors. b
