A Heavy-Duty Mobile Solution To A Crushing Problem
In 2014 Canyon Rock acquired its second quarry. The reason for this acquisition was to provide material for rip rap, and stone, for the Sonoma–Marin Area Rail Transit project; a 70 mile long rail and bikeway which crosses the region. The family owned company’s reputation for operating with optimal efficiency was at stake, so it was essential that the company chose the right primary crusher; one that could handle heavy duty quarrying applications easily and for many years to come. The essential problem for Canyon Rock, and many other such companies, is that the market for
track mounted heavy duty jaw crushers is flooded at present. Many of the crushers available are excellent pieces of equipment, but complicating matters is the fact that many are not. Fortunately for Canyon Rock they were informed about the excellent capabilities of the Sandvik Construction UJ440i tracked mobile jaw crusher. A step-up from what we are used to “The UJ440i is a stepup,” said Canyon Rock coowner, Jonathan Trappe when emphasizing the machine’s strengths. “The chassis, the frame, the belt - everything is sturdier. We were looking for something
that would last a lot longer than a regular contractor’s primary jaw, something that would run well and last for 15-20 years”. The fact that the UJ440i crusher is able to efficiently turn out two finished products from the quarried rock was the real deal clincher for Canyon Rock. “The jaw can handle major openings,” stated Jonathan Trappe. “We can open it up and make finished rip rap. Other jaw crusher manufacturers say the jaws can be opened to 200mm, but even that is pushing it.” This is not surprising as the UJ440i possesses a jaw size of 1200mm x 800mm, and has proved capable of reducing large volumes of rock at high rates of production - up to 700 metric tons per hour. Push buttons also operate the hydraulic close side setting, which can squeeze the opening down to 100mm from 275mm. Additionally, its conveyor belts are
1350mm wide and sit on hydraulic drive units that can be reversed as needed. Cost efficient power plant Power is provided by a 425-horsepower Volvo diesel engine that directly drives the crushing processes. The engine is able to operate without critical loss of power whilst consuming a meagre eight gallons of fuel per hour. “The fuel consumption on the Volvo engine is absolutely phenomenal”, said Martin Keegan of Interval Equipment, Sandvik Construction’s distributor for Mobile Crushers and Screens in the area. “We saw one working in Europe on our factory visit and even when the customer changed the Close Side Setting on the Jaw from 150mm down to 75mm on a very hard competent granite, the fuel consumption only jumped by half a gallon an hour. I have never seen such a productive unit compared to the fuel consumption.” Practical deployment and use of the UJ440i is enhanced through the fitment of a 300 gallon fuel tank, which enables the crusher to process rock all day without interruption for fuelling. Yet, should
the need for interrupting the operation be required, emergency stop buttons are located at several appropriate places on the frame of the machine. This latter point is of major importance to a company as safety conscious as Canyon Rock. Seeing is believing Before finally settling on their new crusher, Canyon Rock received many promises from various crusher manufacturers. Sandvik were so sure of the UJ440i they decided to invite the Trappe brothers, Jonathan and James, to the UK, in order to see the UJ440i in action. Jonathan Trappe commented, “It meant a lot to receive an invitation from Gareth Orritt (Sandvik Construction) to tour a Sandvik factory.” He continued, “We met with the engineers who designed the UJ440i. It was key for us to see one in action, and after seeing how well one was running after 10,000 hours of operation, we knew that was what we were looking for.” One of the features of the UJ440i that really impressed Canyon Rock was the pre-screen which enables them to make le-
November 2014 gitimate splits of the rock material. The separate prescreen is located between the pan feeder and the crushing chamber, measuring a mere 1125mm x 2100mm. It is topped by the stepped grizzly section with a maximum aperture of 100mm. Gareth Orritt, Sandvik Construction Business Line Manager, explains, “the pre-screen on the UJ440i is a superb addition for eliminating the fines quickly. Because of the large screening capacity up to 150tph, and the large screening area, it ensures that Canyon Rock put only clean rock into the jaw. This allows the screening plant further down the line to be so much more efficient in making the coarse rip rap products that Canyon Rock needs to supply their customer base”. The only way was Mobile When the Trappe family began quarrying some 70 years ago it was as a sideline to its dairy business, which Wendell Trappe’s father (father of the current managers / operators) began operating north of San Francisco. From a small quarry on the dairy farm, the Trappe’s hauled occaContinued on page 8

sional truckloads of rock to larger quarry companies. In 1972, the family began quarrying rock seriously when it bought an operational quarry near Forestville, which is managed now by Jonathan Trappe. What began as an excavation site is now a full service operation, featuring a complete line of aggregate and recycled material, as well as an auxiliary division offering ready mix and concrete products. The acquisition of the Cazadero quarry, however, created the need for a new approach to material production, entailing the use of equipment that could produce rip rap and allow Canyon Rock entry into the market for the subbase and erosion control material. During its previous operations the Trappe family had become familiar through use of AllisChalmers aggregate equip-
ment, considering them to be good crushers. Sandvik subsequently purchased and upgraded the Allis Minerals product line, later named Svedala, with the family purchasing a Svedala H4800 cone crusher and then a Sandvik CH660 cone from local Sandvik Construction dealer for stationary crushing and screening equipment, ACS. Despite the excellence of the Allis-Chalmers, Svedala and latterly, Sandvik Construction static crushing and screening equipment, when it came to purchasing their new crusher Canyon Rock knew they required a mobile unit. This was essential as not only is the jaw crusher able to follow the contour of the quarry face under its own power as the quarry is blasted away, but also essential when there are drops and increases in the operating areas of the quarry. All of these elements are easily accomplished due

to the 74 metric ton QJ440i travelling on its 500mm wide, 4200mm long crawler tracks, which enables the machine to navigate a 20 degree slope. New addition aids productivity After falling in love with the Sandvik UJ440i, the company acquired a Sandvik QE440 mobile scalping screen unit to enhance the two-product output at Cazadero. The QE440 boasts the largest total scalping area in its class, and features three broad hydraulic material conveyors with high discharge heights for major stockpiling. It is able to produce up to 900 metric
tons per hour. “We are really happy with the QE440,” says Jonathan Trappe. He acknowledged that the family wasn’t sure if the machine would be able to handle larger rocks conveyed to it by the crusher, but added “It handles the tonnage the UJ440i gives it with no problem, and has enough throw to clear itself.” First class support and advice Helping the company enormously is the fact that Canyon Rock has longstanding relationships with Sandvik Construction’s mobile crushing and screening equipment. This goes back to when
GE’s New Vector Plus Variable Speed Drive With unconventional oil and gas operators seeking more flexible production equipment that can handle fluctuating conditions, GE Oil & Gas (NYSE: GE) recently announced the global introduction of its next-generation Vector Plus variable speed drive (VSD) surface control system for electric submersible pumps (ESPs). ESPs are a widely used form of artificial lift that utilize centrifugal force to pump hydrocarbons to the surface, enabling high flow and enhanced production. ESPs and other artificial lift pumping applications are used in 94 percent of the roughly 1 million oilproducing wells around the world, helping lift hydrocarbons to the surface in reservoirs with low pressure and improving the efficiency of naturally flowing wells. ESPs are widely used to aid production in with highvolume wells and operate, on average, 6,000 feet below the surface. GE provides two ways to control the ESP motor from the surface—by using either a switchboard or a VSD system such as the company’s new Vector Plus VSD and its predecessor, the Vector VII VSD. While switchboards allow the operator to turn the motor on and off, GE’s new Vector Plus VSD allows the operator to gradually increase ESP motor speed and remotely adjust ESP speed from the surface with greater ease of use and improved intelligent control capabilities. GE’s Vector Plus VSD is compatible with other GE artificial lift products,
such as Zenith Downhole Sensors and Field Vantage Solution, and incorporates other existing control technologies, enabling GE to offer customers a cost-effective, integrated solution. “The introduction of the Vector Plus VSD illustrates GE’s commitment to continually push the envelope to improve on our existing, proven artificial lift technologies while also developing new innovations that will help our customers meet their challenging production requirements in the field,” said Jerome Luciat-Labry, President of GE’s Well Performance Services business. “The Vector Plus VSD enhances the operator’s ability to more effectively control an ESP system, which is directly tied to increased system production and improved run-life,” said Richard Torbenson, Product Line Manager— Drives, for GE Oil & Gas.

the Trappe’s first worked with Martin Keegan of local Sandvik Mobile Crushers and Screeners dealer, Interval Equipment, when he was a representative for Extec Screens and Crushers (acquired by Sandvik in 2007). Through this relationship Canyon Rock has grown to rely on the knowledge and support of somebody with experience in the industry, and who is able to provide aftermarket support. “We were worried that parts would be a problem,” explains James Trappe, who manages the Cazadero quarry, who continues, “When something goes down, we can’t be
shut down for a couple of weeks waiting on a part. Having a dealer who will stock parts and take care of issues that might come up was important.” Being able to efficiently churn out rip rap in volume is what drove the purchase of both the new Sandvik screener and crusher. Thanks to Sandvik Construction and Interval Equipment, Canyon Rock now has the critical pieces of equipment in place to meet urgent demand for the coarse rock, and vitally, the back-up which ensures that its customers get the materials they demand, when they want it. b
“Our Vector Plus solution and other ESP technologies provide operators with critical real-time equipment performance data, helping operators to make better production decisions.” Other key customer benefits of the Vector Plus VSD include: • It can be used with ESP applications ranging from 100 to 1,000 horsepower. • It is designed to work on all worldwide power systems rated 380-480 volts in both 50 and 60 Hz markets. • It has an outdoor NEMA 4 rating, meaning that the enclosure is completely sealed against the outdoor environment, to prevent the entrance of dust, dirt and moisture. Significant growth in the global unconventional oil and gas space is a major energy trend driving GE Oil & Gas’ innovations in artificial lift technologies, with the goal of offering operators the right type of solution to address the unique technical and environmental challenges of unconventional
wells. Unconventionals production, driven by shale exploration and production, is expected to increase globally by 50 percent by 2018 alone. GE made its first significant entry into the artificial lift segment with its 2011 acquisition of the Well Support Division of John Wood Group PLC., a major ESP manufacturer. GE’s subsequent 2013 acquisition of Lufkin Industries’ beam pumps, progressing cavity pumps (PCPs), gas lift, plunger lift, hydraulic lift, reciprocating pumps and automation solutions allows the company to offer a complete portfolio of artificial lift technologies, depending on a well operator’s needs. In 2014, GE Oil & Gas consolidated all of its artificial lift offerings in the new Well Performance Services business. As a result, GE is now among the world’s leading artificial lift solutions providers, offering a comprehensive range of pumping solutions to the worldwide oil production. GE is developing technologies today to address tomorrow’s energy challenges. b

World-First Technology To Enhance Mineral Recovery Rio Tinto is set to capture a crucial advantage in the recovery of mineral deposits, with the launch of its revolutionary threedimensional mapping technology to reduce costs and improve the efficiency of mining operations. The new technology supports Rio Tinto’s drive for productivity improvements and cost reductions across its high-quality, lowcost diversified portfolio of assets. In a world-first under the next phase of its industryleading Mine of the Future program, Rio Tinto will be able to precisely identify the
size, location and quality of ore in real time by retrieving data from automated trucks and drills operating in its mines. The RTVis 3D software provides pinpoint accurate mapping which improves efficiency of mining activity by ensuring it is tightly focused on removing high value ore, significantly reducing both waste and operational costs. RTVis creates 3D images of mine pit activities that previously could not be measured. RTVis has led to greater ore recovery through sharper boundary identification, more accurate drill blasting, reduced explosives, improved waste classification and enhanced dig rates. Rio Tinto head of innovation John McGagh said, “This technology allows us to quickly and easily view, compare and evaluate data to paint a picture of what’s under the ground - it’s like an ultrasound image of the deposit delivered in real time, something that we
could never do before. “RTVis is a low-cost application that complements existing group-wide data technology in a way previously never available to enhance our mining operations. It quickly brings information to a much broader audience - from a single operator in the field to an expert team in the Rio Tinto Operations Centre in Perth. “Armed with this detailed information, our operations to recover the ore bodies will be significantly more efficient and effective.” The new 3D technology is deployed at Rio Tinto’s West Angelas iron ore mine in Western Australia and trials are also underway in other Rio Tinto product groups including Copper, Energy and Diamonds and Minerals. RTVis also provides rapid feedback on the impact to equipment while another important benefit is in the area of mine planning, providing much more certainty about the nature of the ore deposit at an earlier stage of the process. RTVis was demonstrated at the International Mining and Resources Conference in Melbourne in September. b

Beyond The Bucket: The Amazing, Versatile And Incomparable Backhoe Dig with one end – load and carry with the other. It’s that basic functionality that drives the initial purchase of a backhoe loader. For the owner/operator starting a business, it’s the
perfect combination in a single machine. But that machine can grow with a contractor’s business and add greater functionality as needed – often forgoing the need to add extra pieces of
equipment (and the associated owning and operating costs). Read on for a few thoughts on options to consider when specifying a new backhoe loader for
added functionality, and then stick around for a few examples of backhoe flexibility beyond digging and loading. Options for Added Versatility Backhoes are an excellent platform for many applications because the machines are extremely stable. They can often handle heavier and more complex attachments than compact and small-sized
November 2014
excavators due to that stability. And, as a wheeled machine, they have significantly less impact on surfaces than tracked machines when turning. A few things to consider with each backhoe loader purchase that can help expand capabilities in the future: PowerLift PowerLift increases the lifting capacity of the backhoe with the push of a button. This feature also decreases the RPMs of the engine to ensure smooth lifting and quieter operation. Contractors find that backhoes provide an excellent tool for lifting and craning, especially in utility and roadside construction applications. This feature can give a backhoe lifting capabilities comparable to a 7-ton excavator. Backhoes that eliminate boom rebound (CASE offers ProControl, for instance, as standard equipment) further assist in precisely lifting and placing heavy loads. Extendahoe The extendahoe is a popular option because it gives the operator greater digging depth and reach. The only performance factor that changes with the
extendahoe arm design is that lifting capacities are slightly less than those on a standard arm. This is an important specification – lifting capacity – always know the machine’s rating for its configuration prior to executing a lift. Auxiliary Hydraulics There are three considerations as it relates to auxiliary hydraulics in most backhoes (configurations may vary by manufacturer): unidirectional hydraulics to the backhoe, bidirectional hydraulics to the backhoe, and auxiliary hydraulics for attachments mounted to the loader end of the machine. As it relates to the backhoe end of the machine, bidirectional hydraulics provide the most flexibility to run all attachments because hydraulic power flows two ways, ideal for use with attachments such as thumbs, augers and swivel buckets. Unidirectional auxiliary hydraulics are fine if a contractor only plans on running attachments with one-way hydraulic flow requirements, such as breakers and compactors. If possible, find a machine that has combo hydraulics Continued on page 13

New GT206 Added To KPI-JCI & Astec Mobile Screens’ Global Track Product Line KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens unveiled its new GT206 track-mounted screening plant during the 2014 National Dealer Conference, held Sept. 15-17 in Denver, Colo. The new GT206 features a heavy-duty 20’ x 6’ inclined screen that offers more screen area and production potential than other
competitive models, according to Patrick Reaver, Product Development Manager for KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens’ Illinois manufacturing facility. In addition to the larger screen, the GT206’s fines side conveyor features a classleading discharge height for increased stockpile capacity. Wide, fixed
catwalks allow for stability and additional safety. Easy, groundlevel access to all belt tensioners and groundlevel grease points provide for easy and safe maintenance. Interchangeable top deck options include mesh, bofor bars, punch plate and finger decks. The addition of a larger track-mounted
screening plant to the Global Track product line provides dealers and end users with a cost-effective, highly productive and mobile option. The Global Track product line features quarry-duty, timeproven components and was developed to be the perfect rental tool and ideal for operations in remote locations. KPIJCI and Astec Mobile Screens is a premiere heavy equipment manufacturer for the aggregate, recycling and construction industries. “The inclusion of the GT206 to our Global Track product line allows us to provide a more comprehensive offering to our dealers and end users,” Reaver said. “The GT206 is a larger version of our GT165 screen and it will allow operators to scalp at higher production rates ahead of or behind primary crushing operations.” To learn more about the GT206 track-mounted screening plant, visit www. kpijci.com/track-mount/ global-track. b

New Technology Converts Paper Making Waste Into Filler Pigment Minerals Technologies Inc. (NYSE: MTX) recently announced that it has introduced NewYield(TM) Integrated Process Technology, a breakthrough technology that converts a paper and pulp mill waste stream into a functional pigment for filling paper. NewYield process technology eliminates the cost of environmental disposal and remediation of certain waste streams to papermakers. “We are very pleased to introduce this new process technology platform that will help papermakers lower costs and reduce their impact on the environment,” said Joseph C. Muscari, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “We believe that initially, the primary region for use of this new process technology will be in China, where there is a concerted effort to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
This technology gives papermakers the ability to solve a waste disposal issue, while at the same time, provides them with a useable filler product in return. MTI and the papermaker will both benefit, as will the environment.” The specific waste stream produced at paper and pulp mills is most prevalent in developing economies and is dealt with by either sending the waste to a landfill or adding significant equipment to the process. This method is both capital and energy intensive and increases carbon dioxide emissions. By utilizing Minerals Technologies’ NewYield Integrated Process Technology, papermakers can eliminate the costs associated with landfill disposal or energy, and in return will receive a filler pigment that can be used in papermaking. b

which includes both unidirectional and bidirectional hydraulics for the most versatility and the least chance to damage unidirectional attachments. Auxiliary hydraulics to the loader end of the machine expand the machine’s capabilities to run attachments such as brooms, grapples and the iconic 4-in-1 bucket. Auxiliary hydraulics, arguably more than any other option, help transform a backhoe into an all-purpose machine. A contractor may simply order the standard machine as a matter of simplicity or cost savings, but simply adding hydraulics to one or both ends of the machine can save significant money in equipment rental or purchasing down the road. It also saves contractors money because they may not have to bring multiple machines and/or multiple operators out to a job site to perform tasks that can all be performed with a properly outfitted backhoe. Couplers Whether cab-activated hydraulic or manual, quick couplers on both ends of the machine will give contractors the ability to run a wider variety of attachments, and simplify the process of switching between attachments. CASE has actually integrated the hydraulic quick
Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · Our Readers Are Your Buyers coupler into the construction of the backhoe arm so that it does not affect breakout force of the machine, rotation or any other operating capacities (compared to aftermarket options). Counterweights As it relates to equipment, weight = increased operating capacities. In the world of the backhoe, a little extra counterweight provides added stability that can prove important in utility and roadside construction applications. It also helps smooth out the roading process when equipping the machine with a heavier rear option such as an extendahoe. Lighting Packages Backhoes can make money at night just as well as they can during the day – proper lighting allows you to do that. Look for a backhoe that offers adjustable side lighting to improve visibility and jobsite awareness during nighttime operations. 4-Wheel Drive/Ride Control These features don’t break ground on any new functionality for a backhoe, but they do significantly improve operation in offroad and rough terrain jobsites. 4-wheel drive helps provide stronger, more stable movement because all four wheels are engaged, and
ride control helps provide cushion to the loader arm when carrying a load – providing a smooth ride and helping prevent spillage of material in the bucket. Grading Backhoes aren’t the first machine that comes to mind for grading, but these machines actually offer an excellent platform for grading. Look for a bucket with wear strips that are the same level as the bottom of the cutting edge. This is so that, when the bucket sits flat, there is contact throughout the whole range of the bucket rather than just the cutting edge. Backhoe loaders are actually easier to use for grading than some other machines because they are more stable and they have axle isolation keeping the bucket in contact with the ground more than a skid steer or a CTL without having to put as much pressure down – which provides a nice finish. Compaction Many utility contractors rely on trench rollers or walk-behind vibratory plate compactors for compacting in trenches. By adding a hydraulic compactor to a backhoe, a contractor can perform that task from a safe distance, rather than placing a worker in a trench with a compactor. It also negates the need to purchase a separate piece
of equipment. Pipe Lifting and Placement Attachments made by companies such as Vacuworx make lifting, handling and placing of pipe more efficient than conventional methods. It requires fewer ground personnel, eliminates the hassle associated with other methods of rigging (chains, straps, slings) and provides 360-degree rotation for precise placement – all without damaging materials or coatings. Get Tilted There are third-party couplers made by companies such as Helac that allow for buckets and other attachments to tilt up to 180 degrees while main-
taining full functionality. This is particularly handy if digging on roadsides or in other tight environments. It also makes attachments such as augers and breakers that much more versatile. Jobsite Clean up Backhoes have excellent hydraulic flow going to the front of the machine. This makes it ideal for using any number of attachments designed for site cleanup, including grapples and brooms. Snow Removal Whether with a broom, a snow blade or a snow push, backhoes prove extremely versatile in this application, helping stockpile, clean and then load
Canada And Nova Scotia Renew Water Monitoring Agreement Minister Aglukkaq and Nova Scotia Environment Minister Randy Delorey recently announced the renewal of a cooperative water monitoring agreement between Environment Canada and Nova Scotia Environment. The Memorandum of Agreement for Water Quantity Surveys ensures the on-going collection, processing, publication and distribution of water quantity data in Nova Scotia. Over the past century, the
Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia have built an extensive network of water monitoring infrastructure to enhance the use of our water resources. This renewed agreement advances our understanding of the availability, variability and distribution of water resources in Nova Scotia. out large piles of snow. Get More When purchasing a machine, it’s easy to take the short view and focus solely on purchase price. But, in an industry where competition for jobs is fierce, it’s often the company that can run leaner and meaner that gets the work. Backhoe loaders are arguably more lean and mean than any other piece of equipment in the industry, giving contractors more options and versatility to expand their offering of services without having to buy additional equipment. Setting up a machine to accommodate that extra capability at the time of purchase will only allow for greater success. b and policy development. Real-time data is essential for flood and drought forecasting, as well as for many industrial processes, agriculture management and electricity generation. The Nova Scotia network of approximately 28 water quantity monitoring stations has been co managed by Environment Canada and Nova Scotia Environment since 1975. This renewed agreement provides for annual operating costs of $460,000, of which 47% is covered by Environment Canada, 39% by Nova Scotia Environment, and the remaining costs from commercial contributions. b

said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. “Our government is focused on connecting people with skills to jobs. That connection must begin at the earliest possible stage.” The association began the program in 2008 in the Moncton Northwest region. It has been expanded to include Saint John and Fredericton and provides supplies to 27 of the 74 identified schools in the province from both anglophone and francophone
