PACCAR Introduces Enhancements To MX-13 And MX-11 Engines PACCAR (Nasdaq: PCAR) is launching exciting new power, torque and fuel efficiency enhancements to its MX-13 and MX-11 engines for North America. The new engines will be available in Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks in January 2017. “The PACCAR MX13 and MX-11 engines are designed to deliver optimum performance, durability, fuel economy, and the lowest total cost of ownership for our customers.” said Landon Sproull, PACCAR vice president. PACCAR increased the MX-13 engine’s output to 510 hp and 1,850 lb-ft of torque and increased the MX-11 engine’s output to 430 hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque. The enhanced PACCAR MX-11 engine also adds a new 335 hp and 1,150 lb-ft torque rating in the lower end of the power range. PACCAR’s MX engines deliver peak torque at 900 RPM for the majority of
MX-11 engines extend oil and fuel filter change intervals from 60,000 miles to 75,000 miles, a significant cost savings for customers over the life of the vehicle. PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 engines now utilize a single canister aftertreatment system that reduces weight by 100 lbs, improves serviceability and lengthens service intervals. PACCAR is one of the leading diesel engine manufacturers in the world with the design, manufacture and production of 1.4 million PACCAR engines globally since 1957. “PACCAR will have 135,000 PACCAR MX engines in operation in North America by year end. Nearly 50 percent of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks delivered to customers in North America this year will be powered by a PACCAR MX engine,” said Sproull. “This strong adoption level is a testament to the outstanding performance, durability, fuel economy and low cost of service delivered by the PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 engines.” b
engine ratings, supporting increased performance and driving flexibility. PACCAR designs MX engines to an industryleading B10 life of one million miles. This means 90% of the PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 engines are expected to reach one million miles without the need for a major overhaul. Each PACCAR MX engine also comes standard with factory installed remote diagnostics to deliver proactive customer support. This translates into low cost of ownership and superior uptime for truck owners. The 2017 PACCAR MX-13 and MX-11 engines include a new single cylinder air compressor, variable displacement oil pump, and variable speed coolant pump providing customers with fuel economy gains over the previous engine design. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

John Deere Highlights Integrated Electric Solutions John Deere showcased its experience in developing and integrating electric powertrain solutions for off-highway applications at MINExpo International, this past September in Las Vegas. John Deere Power Systems and John Deere Electronic Solutions together displayed powertrain and electronic products designed for the rugged demands of mining and construction applications. “We’re pleased to have the opportunity to showcase how the John Deere drivetrain and power electronics products can be combined to work in a variety of mining applications,” said Darren Almond, manager, drivetrain product planning for John Deere Power Systems. John Deere engines, drivetrain components and power electronics have a reputation for durability and reliability, which is paramount in mining applications. Manufacturers of mining equipment
will benefit from the investments John Deere has made in the integration of these systems into complete electric powertrain solutions for mobile offhighway machines. Electric drivetrain product highlights include the following: John Deere Electronic Solutions family of inverters is based on a modular concept and includes power stage, bus capacitor and optional brake chopper with a common control module. PD400 dual inverter, with configurations rated from 150 kVA to 300 kVA, is an all-in-one solution from John Deere Electronic Solutions that eliminates the need for multiple interfaces, allowing system designers the ability to improve machine performance in extreme conditions. John Deere electric generator drive is specifically designed to provide the electric power necessary for heavy duty off-highway traction drive applications.

With a power range of 155 kW (210 hp) for the size 3 model and 400 kW (536 hp) for the size 5 model, the electric generator drive increases productivity, improves uptime and lowers daily operating costs. Designed to efficiently convert electric power to tractive effort, the John Deere three-speed transmission has a power rating of 145 kW (195 hp) and provides torque and speed ranges similar to conventional off-highway transmissions. The transmission also provides exceptional vehicle controllability and full hydraulic power under any operating condition resulting in a higher vehicle/operator productivity combination. In addition, John Deere Power Systems will have on display the CanmetMINING certified PowerTechTM E 4.5L Tier 3 engine with a power range of 63 kW to 104 kW (85 hp to 140 hp). The 4.5L engine has full-authority electronic controls, 2-valve cylinder heads, a high-pressure common-rail fuel system with electronic fuel injection, and a fixed-geometry turbocharger in turbocharged or air-to-air afterContinued on page 9

Navistar’s SuperTruck Exceeds DOE’s Freight Efficiency Goal Navistar unveiled its innovative SuperTruck demonstration vehicle, CatalIST, which has achieved a freight efficiency improvement of 104 percent compared to the control vehicle, exceeding the improvement goal set by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the SuperTruck program. In addition, the Navistar vehicle has achieved fuel efficiency of 13 miles per gallon, and demonstrated 50.3 percent Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) and a path towards 55 percent BTE. The last three letters of the vehicle’s name, the CatalIST, stand for “International SuperTruck,” referencing the company’s International commercial truck brand. The “CatalIST” concept underscores the company’s conviction that the innovations achieved through the program will serve as the catalyst for significant improvements in future commercial vehicles. “The CatalIST’s significant improvements in freight efficiency, achieved with the support of DOE’s SuperTruck program, demonstrate tremendous potential for reduction in the trucking industry’s consumption of energy,” said Mark Stasell, vice president, Product Development. “In addition, a number of the technology innovations we have achieved through the program are already being implemented in production vehicles today.” Stasell pointed to Navistar’s predictive cruise control technology as one example of a significant technical innovation the company achieved through the program. Predictive cruise control looks ahead of the vehicle and recognizes the terrain and continuously calculates the most efficient speed and gear for optimal fuel economy in real time. Unlike conventional predictive cruise technology, the company’s predictive cruise
control uses preinstalled GPS maps and the latest commercial route data to make adjustments to cruising speed without the need to pre-drive the route. Other improvements included: • Advanced integration of Navistar N13 Engine utilizing proprietary
intelligent controls and high efficiency combustion. • Reduction in aerodynamic drag through replacement of cab- and hood-mounted mirrors with a series of cameras and interior-mounted monitors, which also yield equal or better indirect vision for the driver. • A new LED headlamp system that reduces lamp size for a more aerodynamic shape and cuts electrical Continued on page 12

Low Carbon Fuel Research: From The Lab To The Industrial World Lafarge is proud to announce a partnership with Dalhousie University researcher Dr. Mark Gibson that will allow low carbon fuel research to be tested on an industrial scale. Working under a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Discovery Grant, this initiative will research the adoption of low carbon fuels in the cement industry. This continuing partnership between Lafarge Canada Inc. and Dalhousie’s Faculty of Engineering will support the testing of tire derived fuel as a low carbon fuel alternative in the cement industry at the Lafarge Brookfield cement plant. Recent laboratory studies conducted by Dr. Mark Gibson, Associate Professor in Dalhousie University’s Department of Civil and Resource Engineering and his colleagues in Process Engineering and Applied Science, Dr. Michael Pegg and PhD student, Ebenezer Asamany, show that tire derived fuel has the potential to lower CO2 emissions compared with coal derived fuel when co-fired in cement kilns. In 2015, Dr. Gibson and his team published a report entitled Use of scrap tires as an alternative fuel source at the Lafarge cement kiln, Brookfield, Nova Scotia. “My students and I are very pleased to see
vironment Director for Lafarge. While there are a number of levers available to reduce the carbon emissions in the cement industry, the one of most relevance is the growing usage of lower carbon fuels. Thanks to different initiatives including previous work with Dalhousie’s Faculty of Engineering, the Brookfield plant has reached world class status in the percentage of its fossil fuels replaced with lower carbon fuels, in the form of front end burner injection, and is expected to reach substitution rates as high as 30% on an energy basis by the end of this year. If the demonstration shows that, as expected from the research, tires can be used safely to replace coal, Lafarge expects that about 15% of its fuel needs can be met from using approximately 450,000 scrap tires per year which is just under half of the amount of tires generated in Nova Scotia. b
this work enter the real world. Based on our research, we expect to see significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the Brookfield cement plant and thereby help Nova Scotia move one step closer to a low carbon economy,” said Dr. Gibson. “We also expect that the use of tirederived fuel will reduce NOx emissions as well as make excellent use of scrap tires,” he added. Lafarge Canada is committed to a low carbon economy and reducing its carbon footprint. “It is important that we work with partners in tackling the challenging problem of climate change. Dr. Gibson’s team’s research in recent years has been essential to our understanding of how to replace fossil fuels, like coal, with lower carbon alternatives,” said Rob Cumming, En- Source: Lafarge

Top Technology Trends For Modern Equipment Manufacturers Equipment manufacturers’ number one goal is to help their customers run a successful business and provide top of the line industrial equipment. In order to deliver the highest level of service available and keep customers’ machines up and running at peak performance, manufacturers need to take advantage of the latest technology advancements to help them do their jobs. These are some of the top technology trends impacting today’s equipment manufacturers and contractors. IoT/Telematics to Monitor Machines in the Field: With data and analytics flowing in from machine telematics and connected equipment, manufacturers can measure machine activity and performance in real time. For example, telematics in equipment account for the exact cost for every yard of dirt moved, and for every lift the equip-
ers have the opportunity to predict maintenance needs and provide services before the machine experience downtime. Mobile Field Service Apps Improve Service Productivity: As service becomes an essential piece of contractors’ revenue, the technology and mobile tools that make service more efficient will be more important than ever. This year, expect to see significant improvements in dispatch and scheduling, data capture, service history detail and knowledge management, and reducing the learning curve for new hires with the help of mobile devices and apps in the field. By embedding sensors to monitor equipment, OEMs (original-equipment manufacturers) are able to make sure machines are working and help customers meet their goals. And with the mobile service tools to drive more efficient service programs, they can keep equipment up and running while gaining insight into the health and operating efficiency of their machines. b
ment makes. 3D Modelling: If all aspects of a project are being analyzed with sensors, contractors can create a 3D model of future projects so that when they bid, they know the actual cost of that project based on historical data they’ve collected. They go into a project with a much higher understanding of profitability. Autonomous Machines Drive Continuous Use: Autonomous use in equipment is driven by a pre-programmed set of materials inside the machine. For example, rollers for paving an asphalt road are given a pattern to follow, or they can be tracked off another piece of equipment or controlled remotely. Data-Backed Service Initiatives: With all that data being driven off machines comes a better service experience. By providing customers with machine performance information, manufactur- Source: MSI Data

“XC” Means Xtra Capacity “Industry-wide, there is a mix of high- and dualcapacity machines,” says Adam Hailey, Genie Director of Product Management, Terex AWP. “This can be challenging, particularly when spec’ing a project that requires lifting heavy loads. Responding to customer demand worldwide for higher capacity aerial work platforms, the new generation of Genie XC boom lifts are designed to exceed customers’ lift capacity expectations.” All Genie XC booms combine the benefits of a dual-envelope design to provide an unrestricted range of motion with a platform capacity of 660 lb (300 kg) and a restricted operating envelope capacity of 1,000 lb (454 kg). To support additional weight on the platform, Genie XC booms are engineered with an updated boom structure that boasts increased performance, range of motion and envelope control, as well as a robust jib capable of easily handling the standard 1,000lb (454 kg) maximum capacity. “Genie XC booms reduce the number of lift cycles,” says Hailey, “as well as the amount of equipment; operators will need to get tools and materials to work areas at height — doing more with single unit saves time and increases productivity.” The XC nomenclature also lets rental customers
November 2016
know that this new boom complies with the overload restriction guidelines in the proposed ANSI A92 and CSA B354 industry standards in North America, as well as the current European EN280 and Australian AS 1418.10 standards. New Technology Enhances Safe Work Practices “Thanks to new technology incorporated into the design, Genie XC booms will carry more load than ever before, and some models will be able to work on higher slopes, giving the machines the unparalleled ability to complete higher capacity jobs in a wider range of applications,” says Hailey. To increase performance, decrease set-up time and improve the overall productivity, all Genie XC models boast the ability to do zeroload field calibration. These new Genie booms are equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and adjusts the envelope to match the load chart. A tilt sensor also gives users access to different ranges of motion based on the machine’s rated slope limit, on certain machines even on extreme angles, maximizing the ability to access even the most hard-toreach work areas. An updated CAN-based control system on most of the new Genie XC models brings the familiar Smar-
tLink control system features to these new booms. Operators will find the control layouts on these new Genie XC machines to be consistent and intuitive, making operation of the booms easy and straightforward. “And, service technicians will appreciate the onboard diagnostics available on the new LCD display at the ground controls,” says Hailey, “allowing machine setup, calibration and troubleshooting right on the machine — no need for a laptop or any additional accessories.” b Source: Genie

Telematics: What’s The ROI? When looking to implement telematics, one of the biggest challenges is determining where to start. Telematics used to be very limited in scope; however, today its iterations are many and, in most cases, a combination of products is needed to achieve your goal. On one hand, telematics has become extremely simplified: units with powerful internal batteries, through-metal locating capabilities, and extreme portability with no external antenna or wiring. The primary function here is locating, with the benefit of theft protection, reduced insurance premiums, and logistical improvement. On the other end of the spectrum, telematics has become extremely complex and data-rich. Some available solutions tap directly into the machine’s CANBus or ECU and remotely deliver a wealth
of information from runtime, fuel consumption, idle time, RPM, diagnostic fault codes, temperatures, pressures, and much more. As you would expect, there are a variety of options between these two telematics extremes. Some solutions deliver basic location and runtime updates, which may be all you need for a particular application, while a full remote diagnostic readout delivers the needed data in another one. Regardless of your provider and product mix, here are some measurable expectations to set for your telematics ROI (return on investment): Right-sizing your fleet: a fleet size decrease of 3-8 percent while maintaining the same level of work. Running an analysis of utilization by asset type based on actual run time makes it easy to see where your fleet has an excess and where you may need
to add a machine, as well as drive rent versus buy decisions. Improved jobsite billing of 10-30 percent: No longer can machines be hoarded on jobs while a similar asset is rented on a project down the road. Additionally, any usage “fudging” is brought to light and the job is billed properly for the actual work performed by the equipment. Reduced equipment idling by one-third on average: Fortunately for you, a proper telematics system differentiates between “on time,” “working time,” and “idling time.” The obvious benefit: turning off the machine when it idles excessively. By implementing company-wide idling goals and measuring them frequently, you will cut your fuel bills in the short term and also receive a realistic usage barometer for that machine. Reduced service and repair costs of 15-40 percent: Remote access to fault codes and the diagnostic freeze-frame empowers your technicians to perform an ini-
tial diagnosis without an investigative trek to the machine. Once reviewed, they can ensure the right parts and tools are in their truck for a single visit to get the downed asset back up and running, while

giving you the double savings of halving both the technician time and the machine downtime on the job. Tony Nicoletti, a 16year telematics veteran, has implemented the
technology on more than $780 million in customer assets and is currently VP of strategy and business development for DPL Telematics. b Source: AEM.org

Front Page Story
Palm Trees, Sunshine, And Heavy Equipment jeff watson photos
SupplyPost Sales Manager Jeff Watson joined a group of journalists to check out the new line up from LiuGong.
F
or those of you keeping track of such things, you may recall my report from the fall of 2013, when I was invited out to the south of Poland to visit the Dressta factory with a group of international journalists. Dressta had recently been purchased by LiuGong, and had invited some media members out for a tour. That article was re-produced on our website as a backissue, please go take a look at www.supplypost.com. With that event in mind, when I received a call from a PR Agency working for LiuGong Construction Machinery to invite me to San Diego for their Tier IV unveiling event this past October 11/12, it didn’t take me long to convince my wife/business partner Debra, that this was an event worth attending. Sure enough, upon my arrival at the Hilton San Diego on Tuesday afternoon, I was greeted by Marcus, Ivana, Stacie, Hugo and Mike, along with Jessica and her PR crew. As in 2013, the hospitality shown by the LiuGong organization was top notch. We had a phenomenal group dinner that evening, and got to sit with the product managers, trade travel stories and learn a bit about what we would see at the
demo site the next day. Wednesday morning we took a 30 minute drive out to Mega Machinery – the local Dressta distributor, who graciously offered up their yard for us. On display in the parking lot were several wheel loaders and excavators from LiuGong’s Tier IV Final collection. We were split into 2 groups to go through the machines. My group saw the excavators first, with product manager Mike Watt. Mike is a very knowledgeable guy, able to answer every question we sent his way. You can tell Mike is highly devoted to what he does. He is very passionate about these new machines. The new Tier IV Final excavators have been vastly improved over previous models. Easier access for maintenance, easier visibility for the operator, improved design and several new components. Mike made a specific point of talking about their long-awaited ROPS certification, which came through for these models. A full list of the new features can be found on the LiuGong website at www. LiuGongna.com/products. Next up were the wheel loaders, including the all new 856H. Hugo walked us through all 3 loaders. As with the excavators, there
are a quite a number of new and/or improved features including back-up cameras, easier maintenance access and improved cab design, among many other items. Hugo is a definite asset to the LiuGong organization. He has travelled the world over his career and has a wealth of knowledge on these machines. He played an integral part in their development, and like Mike, is very passionate about what he does as well. We completed our time at Mega Machinery with a live demo of the 922E excavator next door. If you check out our Facebook page, there is a video of the machine in action. Keep in mind the operator was a journalist, not a professional operator! After the demo, we were afforded a Q&A session with LiuGong’s Chairman Zeng and other board members, who had made the journey to North America for the event. As the head of a major Chinese corporation, he was surprisingly open and frank with us. He knows that plenty of work lies ahead on all fronts for LiuGong in North America, but also pointed out their successes so far in this “difficult to break in to” North American market. They have built strong relationships with major component manufacturers. They are listening to their dealer network and end users in Canada and the USA, and appear to be on their way to becoming a major supplier here. These Tier IV Final machines were a big step in this direction. The board members were set to visit with the dealers as well; the dealer portion of the event started up that evening, so our time came to a close Wednesday afternoon. As it happened, several of the media invitees didn’t fly home until the next day, which gave us an opportunity to spend an evening in the Historic Gaslamp Dis-
trict downtown, which is a fantastic neighbourhood full of live music, restaurants and entertainment. Not to be missed. My Po-
land trip in 2013 ended with an exhausting 19 hour driving/flying/travelling extravaganza. This trip home was a much more
palatable 3 hour flight, and the hospitality shown to me again by this organization won’t soon be forgotten. b

The new Tiger-Mate 255 field cultivator from Case IH helps producers meet productivity goals by creating an ideal seedbed in the spring. With each pass, the Tiger-Mate 255 delivers a smooth surface and flat subsurface floor. Paired with the Case IH Early Riser planter, it helps producers achieve maximum yield potential by combining a high-efficiency seedbed with the ultimate in seed placement accuracy. “With so much emphasis on planting speed and efficiency, producers need a superior field cultivator to realize their planters’ full potential,” said Chris Lursen, Case IH tillage marketing manager. Case IH set the standard for seedbed preparation. The next-generation Tiger-Mate 255 adds to this legacy, incorporating a redesigned shank assembly, tool-free levelling and adjustments, and a more rugged frame for increased ground speed. Now capable of speeds up to 10 miles per hour, the TigerMate 255 helps producers be more productive with no loss in seedbed quality. “Built using principles of Case IH Agronomic Design, the Tiger-Mate 255 effectively manages residue, breaks up soil clods and puts the finishing touches on the seedbed for optimal seed-to-soil contact, robust root development and even
November 2016 draulic control makes it quick and easy to fine-tune depth to accommodate varying field conditions. Floating hitch. This optional feature allows the Tiger-Mate 255 to run independently of the tractor. The implement accurately follows the ground contour for improved depth consistency on uneven terrain. Stubble-resistant tires. The industry-exclusive, long-lasting radial tires have a greater footprint to reduce compaction and improve flotation and durability. Multiple harrow options. Choose the option to achieve your desired soil finish — including the new 3-bar, spike-tooth Advanced Conditioning System (ACS) harrow with formed TigerPaw Crumbler rolling reel. Tough, durable design The welded bridge frame of the Tiger-Mate 255 is built with strength to stand up to increased field speeds. Yet it can flex through tough, rocky ground, which helps lengthen equipment life. “Available in singlefold sizes ranging from 22 ft. 2 in. to 35 ft. 2 in. and double-fold configurations from 37 ft. 5 in. to 60 ft. 1 in., the Tiger-Mate 255 features the same durability and productivity that Tiger-Mate field cultivators are known for,” Lursen said. “Heavy-duty components throughout this new implement help ensure reliable and low-maintenance operation for seasons to come.” b

The rugged new shank assembly meets the challenges of higher field speeds with 20 percent more holding power than previous models. It balances force and flexibility to keep Earth Metal sweeps parallel to the ground for a consistently smooth surface and flat subsurface floor, regardless of field conditions and speed. From stronger compression springs to larger pivot bolts and hardened pivot-point bushings, the 11/16-inch thick shank is built to withstand the rigors of high speeds and fast-changing field conditions. Split-the-middle sweep pattern. The proven sweep pattern from the TigerMate, combined with 6.5inch shank spacing, provides 100 percent sweep coverage. This ensures maximum soil mixing and improved residue flow, even at higher speeds. High-concavity shank. The shanks break down tough clods and provide more consistent residue movement and optimal mixing. Single-point depth control. New single-point hy- Souce: Case IH

TomTom Delivers GPS For Professional Truckers In North America TomTom (TOM2) has created a GPS designed for professional truckers that want a companion device to help reduce worry from the job. The TomTom TRUCKER 600 does exactly that. Truck drivers can get accurate, vehicle-relevant navigation, map updates and traffic analysis – for the lifetime of the device – all in one package. Truckers can now plan a journey before leaving, and when they climb into their cab the navigation device will be programmed, ready and waiting. Planning a journey from the office, the truck stop, or a stay over, can be done using the MyDrive web app. This even takes into account truck weight, type, size and cargo to find the perfect route – helping to reduce even more worry from the job. “We are excited to be
able to deliver a GPS designed specifically for truckers, giving them all the relevant truck-specific information such as bridge heights, relevant truck routes and road restrictions they need to complete their routes in a timely and hassle free manner,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, President of TomTom, Inc. The TomTom TRUCKER 600 isn’t only designed for professional driving though, as it can also be used in a driver’s personal vehicle. The device has a 6-inch touchscreen with tablet style pinch, zoom and swipe controls. Plus it can be docked and undocked easily with the unique Click & Go magnetic mount – ideal for security. The TomTom TRUCKER 600 will be available in September on www.tomtom.com b Source: TomTom

more comfortable, appealing and user-friendly in every detail. In keeping with the company’s DriverFirst product design focus, International undertook extensive research with truck drivers, including driver clinics that gathered input from hundreds of drivers. International used this research to design an all-new interior, and identified multiple new and improved features that enhance driver appeal. “To ensure the new LT Series is the most drivercentric Class 8 vehicle we’ve ever built, we gave drivers a voice in its design,” said Jeff Sass, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Navistar. “Many of our customers tell us that their numberone challenge is attracting and retaining drivers, which is why we put so much effort into understanding and responding to drivers’ needs. These improvements also contribute to increased driver ease of use that will boost the vehicle’s productivity.” Based on a careful review of more than 500 points where the driver and truck interact, the highly ergonomic interior of the LT Series includes better elbow room, hip room and leg room. Driver input also led to a smart, well-designed mix of hightech and traditional features that emphasize driver ease of use. The redesigned interior features a new premium gauge cluster with a digital driver display that places everything within comfortable reach, while offering drivers real-time monitoring of fuel economy and other important alerts in clear sight. The new display also offers up to 15 customizable digital gauges. In addition, the air horn was relocated back to its traditional, intuitive position over the driver door in response to overwhelming driver feedback. The same aerodynamic improvements that boosted the LT Series’ fuel efficiency also yielded a four-Sone decrease in wind noise, which eliminates noise harshness for improved driver comfort.
Multiple improvements are designed for improved safety, including standard LED headlamps to improve night vision, a columnmounted gear-shifter that allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road, and a redesigned one-piece side window that affords the driver a clearer line of sight. In addition, the Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system comes standard in the LT Series. Best-in-Class Uptime The LT Series was designed with the goal of best-in-class uptime, meaning keeping the truck on the road and facilitating quick service when the need arises. To drive improved uptime, International carefully reviewed reliability data and other data collected from OnCommand™ Connection, the company’s leading-edge remote diagnostics system, and made multiple enhancements to support increased reliability and serviceability. “We pored over reliability data to evaluate nearly every single system on our on-highway platform, in order to look for ways to get better,” said Denny Mooney, senior vice president, Global Product Development, Navistar. “In some cases, we completely redesigned the entire system to reach our goals. We are proud of the integrated, data-driven approach we used to assure improved reliability, serviceability and productivity.” Many of the truck’s new features were designed to improve reliability and serviceability, as well as functionality. For example: • The new single-canister aftertreatment system is not just 60% smaller and 40% lighter, but is also simplified for quicker servicing. • The new LED headlamps and fog lamps not only deliver brighter light and intensity, but also have tough new polycarbonate headlight lenses that protect them against breakage. • The cab wiring includes all-new harnessing and an in-cab power distribution module that is inside the truck, away from the
November 2016 elements. • All key service points under the hood, inside the cab and around the vehicle are ergonomically designed for easy access and servicing, and many components have been engineered with longer intervals between required maintenance. Unrivalled Fuel Efficiency The LT Series features dramatically improved aerodynamics and provides fuel efficiency that is 7 percent better than the company’s most recent fuel economy leader, a 2017 ProStar with the Cummins ISX15 engine. International has always placed a strong emphasis on industry-leading aerodynamics as a solid foundation for fuel efficiency, and the LT Series delivers 3 percent improvement in fuel economy due to its aerodynamic benefits alone. Upgraded aerodynamic features on the new International LT Series include an aero-contoured hood, fender, wheel opening and chassis skirts and an aeroenhanced three-piece front bumper, while longer side extenders shorten the trailer gap. Aerodynamics in the LT Series were fine-tuned using multiple advanced testing methods, including computational fluid dynamics, one-eighth scale and full-size wind tunnel and coast-down testing, to assure that the vehicle would perform well facing winds not just head-on, but also at an angle. In fact, the higher the yaw angle of the wind, the better the LT Series performs against the competition. Advanced Technology Comes Standard Central to the advances of the International LT Series are advanced driver assistance systems that support safety and efficiency goals and pave the way for additional customer-selected options. The Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system comes standard with every model in the series, and is also available with the optional Bendix Wingman Fusion and Meritor WABCO OnGuardACTIVE systems. gear for optimal fuel economy in real time. Unlike conventional predictive cruise technology, International predictive cruise control uses preinstalled GPS maps and the latest commercial route data to make adjustments to cruising speed without the need to pre-drive the route. The sophisticated new electronic control systems also use programmable parameters to optimize efficiency. Driver controls and instrumentation are based on robust industrystandard SAE J1939 electrical architecture, with a
new cluster and switches designed to keep drivers focused and maximize uptime. Multiple Configurations Available The LT Series will be offered in multiple configurations, including day cab, 56” low roof sleeper, 56” hi-rise sleeper, 73” hi-rise sleeper and 73” sky-rise sleeper. It will offer customers a choice of engines that provide premium performance. The LT Series is being launched with the new 2017 Cummins X15 engine, which has HP ratings of up to 500 HP in
So Much More Than Grunge, Rain And Great Coffee Seattle-Tacoma received the Hardest Working Cities award on Aug. 4 at a special presentation hosted by Valley Freightliner Pacific. It turns out there’s a reason there’s a coffee shop on every corner in Seattle — it’s fuelling a strong construction and manufacturing workforce. And that’s why SeattleTacoma was named the ninth Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities recipient. The workers in SeattleTacoma have a lot to show for their long hours: the $470 million Seattle-Taco-
ma International Airport renovation, WSDOT’s I-5 overhaul and Port of Seattle’s expanded international arrivals facility. In addition, Seattle-Tacoma is among the top 20 percent of metropolitan areas in North America for contribution to gross domestic product. And for that, we thought they deserved a big thank you. Freightliner Trucks visited job sites as part of the award celebration to bring workers meals to fuel their days; including breakfast burritos and deli sandwiches, and Hardest Working Cities swag

the efficiency series and up to 565 HP in the performance series. It is also being launched with the new 2017 Navistar N13 engine, which will be available in the spring and has an advanced fuel-efficient 13-liter design that produces up to 475 HP and 1,750 lb.-ft. of torque from a design that is 500 to 600 pounds lighter than traditional big bore engines. The company is taking orders today and will begin production in late November. b Source: Navistar they could wear with pride. Job sites included Potelco, Food Services of America, and Miles Sand and Gravel. One of the workers we spoke with was Anthony Le at Food Services of America. Here’s his story on how he got into this business of hard work: “Seattle is experiencing a lot of growth right now, the economy is boosting up, and so I came here to find a new life. I started out as a flight attendant, but I felt like that job wasn’t for me. I’ve been working for Food Services of America for 17 years and I really like it. I enjoy driving the forklift, but my favourite thing about this job is the food. Between receiving, shipping and picking, you can’t imagine how much food is in our warehouse.” See more stories from hard-working men and women in Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities on our blog, Behind the Hard Hat. Seattle-Tacoma received the Hardest Working Cities award on Aug. 4 at a special presentation hosted by Valley Freightliner Pacific. State Senator Pam Roach spoke at the event and National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drivers John Force and Matt Hagan made special appearances. Seattle-Tacoma has joined the ranks of eight other cities across North America to be honoured by Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities, including Dallas, Edmonton, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, Salt Lake City and Toronto. b Source: Freightliner
