The Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) is calling on drivers across the province to send in original photos of their favourite Ontario roads as a part of its ‘Great Roads Contest’. Anyone who submits a photo will be entered into a draw for an iPad Mini which will take place at OHMPA’s annual Fall Asphalt Seminar on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in Woodbridge. “We want to celebrate the simple fact that Ontario rides on great roads and enjoys the smoothest, most economical and greenest roads in the country,” says Doug Duke, OHMPA Executive Director. “Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words. So we are asking people to share pictures and stories of their favourite Ontario roads as a part of OHMPA’s ‘Great Roads Contest.’” The province’s 200,000 kilometres of asphalt roads
are renowned as some of the smoothest and most scenic in North America. “Beyond just being an appealing contour of black velvety ribbon winding to the horizon, much work and research goes into building roads that are safe and that last,” says Mr. Duke. “The key to a longlasting, smooth road is to build with the best quality materials to suit the climate, traffic load and geography of the location. Those are the things we investigate and promote at OHMPA on an ongoing basis.” Entering OHMPA’s ‘Great Roads Contest’ is as easy as snapping a photo and tweeting it to @OHMPA’ using the #ONGreatRoads hashtag or posting it to Facebook at www.facebook.com/OntarioHotMix. All entries should be of an open road and not a construction site. The contest is open to both members
October 2013 and non-members of OHMPA and people of all ages are encouraged to enter. Aside from the iPad Mini, the winning entry will also be featured in the winter 2014 edition of Asphaltopics, OHMPA’s asphalt industry magazine. For more information on the contest, go to OHMPA’s website at www.ohmpa .org . Good luck and safe driving! b

nB power trims trees to maintain power line reliability As hurricane season approaches, NB Power crews continue to trim low-hanging branches around power lines to ensure safe and reliable delivery of electricity to urban and rural customers throughout the province. “Maintaining trees around the power lines ensures the reliability of the electrical infrastructure,” said Sherry Thomson, Vice-President of Customer Service, Distribution and Transmission. “Certified arborists and forest technicians routinely inspect and maintain trees around the power lines on public and private properties. We only cut and trim trees if they present a potential electrical safety issue or have the potential to affect power lines.” Trees and branches falling into power lines during storms accounted for 36 per cent of the power out-
ages in New Brunswick last year. Preventative maintenance will help reduce the number of power outages customers may experience during high winds and heavy weather. “NB Power vegetation management crews have inspected power lines and cleared vegetation in various areas throughout the province based on our preventative maintenance program,” said Thomson. NB Power follows international science-based directional pruning standards and guidelines for all tree maintenance, which may result in an uneven shape to the tree. If maintenance or removal is required, NB Power follows these standard safe distances: • If a tree is removed or maintained, all other healthy trees will be left standing and pruned as required to a minimum
2.5 metres (8 feet) of clearance around the power line. • Hedges will be topped at 1 metre (3 feet) below a service loop or communications line. • Ornamental trees may be allowed to remain a minimum of 1.5 metres (4 feet) away from power lines, depending on tree and branch size. NB Power’s tree maintenance program is vital to ensure reliable service, in particular during storms and strong winds. Residents are asked to take precautions when planting shrubs or trees near power lines to ensure they are best-suited to grow in the vicinity of power lines. For those wishing to plant new trees or shrubs, NB Power has tips on planting the right tree in the right place, and which shrubs or trees are best-suited to grow in the vicinity of power lines. NB Power is working to maintain the balance between environment and infrastructure, to keep the lines clear of tree branches, ensure system reliability and keep the lights on in New Brunswick. b

let ‘em rip! shearForce equipment Brings the Xcentric ripper to canada Up in the mountains surrounding Harrison Lake, just a few kilometres north of Chilliwack, B.C., a logging road slowly winds its way up along the mountainside. The road comes to a sudden end, facing a wall of sheer rock which blocks the path. Carly Wethersett, Marketing Director at ShearForce Equipment, stands near that rock wall and watches as a small crew fits an excavator with one of her company’s latest products. It will be a real-world test of what the product can do in Canada’s mountainous terrain. That product is the XR40, a mid-size model of the Xcentric Ripper. Back in March of 2011, the excavator attachment caught the eye of ShearForce’s President and General Manager, Brad Dewit, at ConExpo in Las Vegas. Within weeks of seeing the Ripper on the tradeshow floor, Dewit signed on for
his company to be the exclusive Canadian dealer for all Xcentric Ripper models. Not three months later, ShearForce made their first sale of the XR30, and it’s been a part of their product line ever since. Back up on the mountain, the Ripper is all rigged up, and the operator makes his first few passes at the rock face. Wethersett watches on as the Ripper makes quick work of the rock wall, tearing it away. The operator looks over and tells her, “I can’t believe how fast this thing is going. It cuts through like it was butter.” If the results sound extraordinary, that’s because the Ripper is no ordinary hammer. Initially designed to tackle excavation and trenching projects in the north of Spain, the Ripper boasts some impressive key stats. In half of all job applications, it’s been proven to be two to five times more effective than any other hydraulic break-
er available on the market. The technology The secret, as Wethersett says from her office in Abbotsford, B.C., is in the attachment’s patented “Impact Energy Accumulation Technology.” “The technology it uses is twofold,” she explained, “It’s impaction, like a typical hydraulic hammer would use, but it also uses vibration... the vibration works into cracks and fractures, increasing them and splitting the rock apart. It’s accelerating the rate of demolition by working with those natural fractures.” That twofold attack — and the boost it gives to overall productivity — is just one of the benefits of the Xcentric Ripper. The attachment is entirely selfcontained in an airtight enclosure, which means less noise than the average hydraulic breaker (it’s operating noise level is about on-par with a standard bucket). The enclosure

— reduced environmental impacts, as well. Although the Ripper can be found on job sites worldwide — in Australia, China, the United States and throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America — you won’t find it anywhere in Canada unless you go to ShearForce Equipment. “We’re a very young and progressive team,” Wethersett said, “and when Brad [Dewit] saw the Ripper at ConExpo, he thought, ‘This is going
to fit really well with our customer base, it’ll add to what we already do.’ It’s that progressive attitude, I think, that led us to bring the Ripper to Canada, to take that chance on it.” ShearForce Equipment While ShearForce may be a new name in the industry, they’re no rookies when it comes to equipment. ShearForce is a recently-formed division of West Coast Machinery, which has been owned and operated by the Dewit Continued on page 7

also protects against dust, dirt, earth and moisture, making the Ripper virtually maintenance-free. Capitalizing on advantages At the end of the day, when equipment is down, money is lost. The unprecedented speed and efficiency of the Ripper, combined with it’s no-maintenance operation, translates into less operator time and lower fuel usage. Bottom line, that means big savings on overall operating costs and — if that weren’t enough

family since Brad’s grandfather founded the company in 1973. Until recently, all of their products were marketed under the West Coast name. However, with changing times come changing business. As Wethersett explained, “The desire to change [the name] to Shearforce was the need to show that we’re ready to move across Canada. We are no longer just West Coast Machinery, we’re encompassing much more than that. So [the name
change] was a move to reflect our changing customer base.” If the Ripper is any indication, ShearForce is already well-equipped to deliver work-site solutions across the country. The attachment’s method — using impaction and vibration — is a huge advantage in a wide range of locations, from the coastal granite and clay slate of British Columbia, to limestone of the prairies, to the permafrost of the north. Being fully enclosed, the Ripper is even suitable for
underwater work, and can be submerged up to 50 metres deep. Excavation, trenching, demolition and dredging — the Ripper can handle them all. Of course, the technology has some limitations. The Ripper works best where the earth has natural fracture and faults which can be worked into. In rock formations with fewer naturally-occurring fractures, the Ripper may not be the right tool for the job. “In cases like that,” Wethersett said, “even a Continued on page 10

hammer might not necessarily be the best thing. You may still have to consider drilling and blasting.” Constant evolution Even so, with possible applications across the country, especially in the north and along the West Coast, the Xcentric Ripper is one of the most exciting new excavation products available in the Canadian marketplace. The success of one product alone isn’t enough for the team at ShearForce, though.
They’re always on the lookout for new products; in fact, as this article is being written, company President Brad Dewit and Vice President Rob Beukema are in Europe, searching for the next big thing to bring to their customers. Back in Abbotsford, Wethersett is optimistic about what the future holds for the company, and the Xcentric Ripper. “There’s still lots to be done here. There’s so much potential out there, this is such a new product and
there are so many industries we can provide our services to. It almost makes you wonder, ‘Where do we even start?’” She added, with a laugh, “It’s a good problem to have.” For more on the Xcentric Ripper, and to check out ShearForce’s complete line of products and services, visit www.shearforce.ca. art Research and Design facility in West Bend, Wisconsin in 2009 paved the way for future innovation and durability testing. “Look for Gehl branded skid loaders to deliver new customer focused models without abandoning our heritage,” said Brian Rabe, Manager of Product Development. “This measured approach has worked for Gehl skid loaders for 40 years, and for the Gehl brand for over 150 years. You can’t argue with history.” By leveraging its long history in the skid loader market with the addition of innovative, exclusive features – like the original hands-only control system, the T-Bar; the Powerview lift arm; and the adjustable, side-anchored operator restraint bar – Manitou Americas looks to entice new skid loader users while maintaining its core customer base. With the rich heritage the Gehl brand enjoys in the agriculture and rental markets, Manitou Americas, Inc. is dedicated to manufacturing equipment with the right mix of technology and simplicity, ensuring reliability and easy maintenance and service. History Based on the company’s long history and heritage in the agricultural implements business, the customer base in the early 1970’s was primarily agricultural. The company recognized a demand for a compact loader among its customers, and
Supply Post Central/Eastern Canada Edition · www.supplypost.com struck a deal with the Ericsson Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota to manufacture the first Gehl branded skid loader. “In reality, Gehl marketed its first skid loader in 1969,” says Kelly Moore, Product & Training Specialist, Skid Loaders – Manitou Americas. Moore has worked closely with the Gehl brand skid loader product line since 1978. “This unit was a private labeled product known as the 3030 and it was the beginning of great things to follow in the skid loader industry.” Gehl Company quickly realized that to control their skid loader product offering, they needed to manufacture and design their own line. In July 1973, the first Gehl brand skid loader was manufactured in Madison, South Dakota. Forty years later, Gehl brand skid loaders are still manufactured in Madison. Over the next 15 years, the Gehl branded skid loader product line brought many industry “firsts” for the skid loader market. Performance features such as liquidcooled engines, hydrostatic transmissions and dieselpowered machines hit the market in the early 1970’s. In the late 70’s, and early 80’s Gehl brand skid loaders featured a roll-back ROPS and hydraulic solenoid lift arm lockouts for easier maintenance. In 1982, Gehl Company revolutionized the skid loader business with the 4610, a 44-horsepower unit that featured the operator re-
new Hydroelectric project creating Jobs Ontario is creating up to 100 new construction jobs in Northern Ontario while renewing its commitment to clean, renewable electricity with the New Post Creek hydroelectric project. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and its partner, Coral Rapids Power, a wholly owned company of the Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN), are moving forward to develop approximately 25 megawatts (MW) of renewable hydroelectric power through the construction of a generating station on New Post Creek near its outlet to the Abitibi River. The New Post Creek project builds on the exper-
tise and capacity developed in recent Northern Ontario hydroelectric projects, such as the Lower Mattagami project. The new project will include construction of a generating station, a dam and powerhouse. Associated activities will include improvements to existing access roads, establishment of a construction site and installation of a transmission line. This project supports Ontario’s goal to facilitate the participation of First Nation and Métis communities in renewable energy and transmission projects while building strong communities, powered by clean, reliable energy. b
straint bar for more comfort and added protection. In the mid-1980’s the model 4615 was added, specifically designed for the construction market. The models 6620 and 6625 entered the Gehl brand into the
largest skid loader class. By 1995, the Gehl brand offered a full line of eight models serving the agricultural and construction markets. Many of the historic late 70’s and 80’s machines are still in regular use today; a
perfect example of the deep dedication to the design and manufacture of dependable, long-lasting products. Throughout the years, the dedication to the skid loader product offering never changed. Product updates
Page 11 included more powerful engines, higher lift heights and compact dimensions. The Gehl brand skid loader has consistently evolved, answering customer demands for a reliable and adaptable machine. b

Here Come The Hybrids! Construction companies now have a few technological options to decrease their operating costs, increase their fuel efficiency, and enhance their environmental stewardship by taking advantage of new hybrid construction equipment. By Mark Wolfe.
M
ore than a decade after the Honda Insight hybrid automobile was released in the Japanese consumer market in 1997, the past three years have seen North American hybrid construction equipment offerings from Komatsu, Deere, and Caterpillar. Komatsu was one of the first manufacturers to release a product in this area with their hybrid HB215LC-1 hydraulic excavator. Deere followed with their 644K hybrid loader, and Caterpillar recently unveiled the Cat 336E H hybrid excavator. Hybrid equipment takes advantage of traditional fuel sources, but it also uses new technological in-
novations to recover and reuse energy that would otherwise be wasted. This translates into lower emissions and reduced fuel consumption without sacrificing performance. On average, the cost difference between purchasing a conventional machine and a hybrid is about 15 to 20 per cent. This cost is offset through the 20 to 25 per cent reduction in fuel costs, and the significant benefits to the environment. These advantages are optimized when using equipment that repeats the same movement. For example, the Cat 336E H excavator captures energy when the machine slows down or stops, and then releases it
as the machine accelerates. On a typical job site, an excavator may repeat the same cycle every several seconds, which represents a significant energy savings opportunity. “Since fuel is one of the largest operating costs for our customers in general, quarry and heavy construction applications, this is a technology that directly improves their bottom lines,” says Gary Stampanato, Caterpillar Vice President with responsibility for the Excavation Division. In addition to reduced operating costs, in some cases a hybrid machine is easier to handle. “Operating a conventional [wheel loader] can
be challenging because to effectively load the bucket, the operator has to manage engine speed, which changes pushing force and hydraulic speed,” says John Chesterman, Product Marketing Manager, Production Class Wheel Loaders, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “The 644K hybrid wheel loader is much easier to operate due to the constant engine speed near its power peak, the full hydraulic flow that is available since the hydraulic pump runs at a constant speed, and the strong pushing power from the electric motor which delivers its maximum torque when nearly stopped.”
Although the construction sector is just starting to experience the advantages of this new technology, the decision to purchase a hybrid comes down to how much you value a larger initial investment for longterm savings. “Current machines can consume a lot of fuel and leave a large carbon foot-
print,” says Ontario-based Komatsu equipment dealer, Jodie Willis, Manager – Communications & Property at Equipment Sales & Service Limited. “The world is trending towards trying to curb emissions, and embrace any technology that is more efficient, costs less, and is environmentally friendly.” b
