“Bulletproof” Sennebogen 830 M-T Log Handler Sets The Pace

When Larry McKay took over Mountainside Unloading in 2006, he went to work upgrading the woodyard’s fleet of Prentice 625s to Sennebogen 830 M-T log handlers.

Since then, the yard has been attracting attention for the durability of its machines, as well as the dependability of its service.

It’s not surprising that McKay’s first Sennebogen recently turned over 42,350 operating hours. The machine is even running with its original Cummins engine. In fact, all of its original frame and components are still intact. And it’s still pulling regular shifts at the Louisiana-Pacific (L-P) specialty board mill across the road from the woodyard.

But the real testament to McKay’s uptime program? He can say the same thing about all six 830s he now has in service. Another of his Sennebogen machines has over 41,000 hours while three others have clocked more than 30,000 hours. “They’re bulletproof,” he says.

Purpose-built for the job

Constantino Lannes, the President of Sennebogen LLC, cites McKay’s fleet as a prime example of what can be achieved by “thinking beyond the machine.” Lannes says that well-engineered, wellconstructed machines are just one element in Sennebogen’s commitment to long life and low Total Cost of Ownership. “Our investment to support our machines after the sale is equally important, along with the commitment of owners, like Larry McKay, to protect their investment in the equipment.”

All of the log loaders at Mountainside Unloading work hard, long shifts. But it’s work that the 830 M-T is built for, with its undercarriage specially modified for trailer-pulling and its elevating Maxcab to help operators work quickly and safely. Each axle is driven by its own transmission, delivering powerful 4-wheel

drive capable of hauling 100,000-lb. log trailers, often through muddy yard conditions. McKay points out, “It’s not like pulling on pavement. Sometimes we’re pulling in a foot of mud and deeper, and we pull a big load of wood and they just yard’er out of there!”

No interruptions

McKay has the machines on rotating, day-long shifts unloading trucks, stockpiling the yard, and feeding wood at the mill. L-P is finishing close to a million board feet of product every day, and McKay makes sure that the process is never interrupted by problems in the woodyard. “They go 24/7, but you know, we really never have to shut them down because of our equipment; maybe for minutes on a rare occasion. Things do break like that: you’re just sitting there, and then you go to move, maybe a little coil will fail. It’s happened. And so,

we’ve kind of adapted so that we do not get ourselves in a pickle with a machine down.” On top of stocking his own parts, McKay can also rely on his dealer parts and overnight delivery even though he is almost six hours away! “They have always been there when we needed them.”

Sennebogen prides itself on engineering for uptime, including features like automatic central lubrication as standard equipment, 3-micron oil filtration, reversible cooling fan, and a unique

longitudinal engine mount for efficient flow-through cooling.

Planning for uptime

The best cure for downtime, of course, is prevention. And this is where McKay’s fleet management truly shines. “When they’re running, we get them to the shop once a day. Two machines come in and two machines go out. They get normal dayto-day stuff: cleaned, greased, checked over, engine oil. The pins on that first loader are still like new. And you know, they just keep running. I don’t like shutting them off in the millyard. We add fuel conditioner once a day at the shop and I truly believe in that. It’s so important to use good stuff. I use good 5:40 engine oil and really good hydraulic oil. Like, 90% of the hoses are still original, and there are a lot of hoses on these machines! Manuals say you should change all your hoses at 6000 hours and a lot of these are original at 40,000 hours. I take it to be the good oil I’m using. It has an additive that keeps the rub-

ber flexible and pliable, and we’ve been having very good luck with it. It’s well worth a little extra, you know, to run a good oil.”

“Every 250 hours, we pull them through the shop for more intensive servicing like new air filters and so on. We do regular oil analysis, and based on that, we will go 750 hours for an oil change. The little Cummins engines have been top notch. The first machine has the original engine and at 35,000 hours, I put in new fuel injectors and a new fuel pump, and it’s still running great.”

McKay’s PM plan looks deeper and further ahead than most fleets. He has replaced the operator seats twice (“they spend 12 hours a day up there!”). Before too much longer, he expects to schedule replacements for the main boom pin and main hydraulic pump for each machine. “It’ll just be a swap-out because there’s no reason these loaders shouldn’t last 100,000 hours. They’re just built good.” SP

This Sonic system ensures that the skid steer and the FAE mulcher are completely aligned by automatically calibrating the mulcher’s parameters. Sonic continuously manages the mulcher’s hydraulic settings, for a significant boost in overall productivity of up to 30%. The Sonic system also minimizes rotor stalling and shortens recovery time thanks to the quick recovery of the rotor’s rpm.

Volvo CE Helps Elevate Motorsport Safety

The patent-pending tool co-developed by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) and Granfors Racing has been adopted by the FIA and is the first solution of its kind to be devised as part of motorsport’s electric transformation.

The Power Of Three

The new racecar recovery tool is a unique solution in the world of motorsport and is the first of its kind to be introduced to the tracks since the FIA began the electric transformation of its World RX race series. Thanks to the use of this patent-pending solution, the now 100% electric rallycross cars are recovered from the racetracks without any manual intervention –meaning no personnel have to walk on to the tracks and physically strap or hook the car to a recovery vehicle as would previously occur –making it not only safer to intervene, but also more efficient and speedier.

Volvo CE co-designed the solution in its role as Official Construction Equipment Supplier and Track Building Partner for the World RX race series, together with Swedish start-up Granfors Racing. After being trialed at the race weekend in Riga, Latvia, in September, it has now been adopted by the FIA as the most efficient recovery solution for the race series. Eagle eyed viewers were able to see it in action during the race weekend, held October 8-9 in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

In Safe Hands

With the advent of electric rallycross racing come entirely new safety considerations given that the rallycross cars can accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than two seconds – quicker than a Formula 1 car – combined with the inevitable care that needs to be factored in when handling electrically charged vehicles.

Benoît Dupont, OffRoad Category Manager for the FIA, says: “Electric racing is a new technology which brings new challenges around safety – we need to adapt to that and create new tools. Volvo CE has been really proactive in helping us, creating a tool that allows us to remove the car in a safe and efficient way. And this is really what we were looking for – to add electric safety on top of efficiency.”

Because safety is not something to be taken lightly, the FIA has introduced a smart traffic-light system as part of its new electromobility safety protocols. Whenever an electric rallycross car comes off the racetrack, a green light on top of the car indicates the safety status of the car. If it turns red, it indicates to those nearby that it is not safe to touch the car and to await official recovery of the vehicle.

To keep in line with this system and to allow the safe recovery of electric rallycross cars that have ‘turned red’, Volvo CE and Granfors Racing came up with their own three-fold safety system. Once drivers have been safely recovered from the car by trained officials, the car is then carefully picked up by a flat insulated rescue plate, which is controlled, lifted, lowered and angled as necessary with a 360° Engcon tilt rotator attached to a Volvo EWR150E wheeled excavator. The combination of these three tools together not only ensures the safe handling of battery-powered vehicles but also provides unrivalled efficiency and flexibility. The EWR150 wheeled excavator, run on biofuels, offers a tight, compact swing essential for the complex maneuvers required during this process and the reliable handling needed to quickly and safely deliver the crashed racecar to the designated recovery area.

Developed in collaboration with Engcon, which provided the tilt rotator attachment, and tested under thorough safety requirements set by the FIA, the result is a collaborative innovation set to break new boundaries in motorsport safety.

ASV Introduces New Mulchers, Snow Attachments & Dozer Blade

ASV Holdings Inc. introduces new high-performance mulchers for the MAX-Series RT-135F and RT-75HD Posi-Track loaders as well as the first ASV-branded snow attachments.

A 6-way dozer blade is also included in the updated line of branded attachments. As with all ASV-branded attachments, the mulcher, snow attachments and dozer blade are simple to use and compatible with all brands with the added advantage of being matched and tested for use with ASV machines. ASV’s attachment line also includes an industry-leading two-year warranty with all parts and support available directly through ASV’s dealer network.

ASV exhibited one of the new mulchers at the Equip Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.

ASV’s new mulcher attachments are a perfect fit for the machines to achieve maximum power and productivity. Both the RT-135F and RT-75HD offer exceptional flow, allowing operators to get more out of their attachments while maintaining optimal machine performance. The RT-75HD’s highly efficient auxiliary hydraulic system provides 35.7 gpm high flow for reliable execution on the job. For even more power in challenging applications, the RT-135F uses a 132-horsepower Cummins engine combined with a 50-gpm maximum auxiliary flow and oversized auxiliary

pump of 66 gpm. The extra 16 gpm within the pump means operators can run high-flow attachments, such as the new mulchers, at full speed while moving the loader without slowing down the tool. New HSI Crusher Design From Superior

Superior Industries, Inc. says its brand-new Portable Sentry HSI Closed Circuit Plant is equipped with the ability to process recycled concrete, reclaimed asphalt, and pit run materials into valuable salable products.

From a single feed, owners and operators will be able to produce up to four unique products.

The closed circuit crushing and screening arrangement includes a 4250 Superior brand Sentry Horizontal Shaft

Impactor (HSI). It’s fed by a 48x18 Intrepid Vibrating Grizzly Feeder, which is equipped with interchangeable grizzly cassettes (bars, fingers or punch plates) to accommodate multiple applications.

Hyster Begins Pilot Of Hydrogen Fuel

Cell-Powered Container Handler

Hyster Company announces testing of a top-pick container handler powered by hydrogen fuel cells (HFC) at Fenix Marine Services in the Port of Los Angeles.

Building on the industry standard Hyster H10501150XD-CH top-pick container handler design, the truck is powered by two 45kw hydrogen fuel cells from Nuvera, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyster parent company Hyster-Yale Group. A California Climate Investments grant awarded by the California Air Resources Board in 2018 helped support development of the HFCpowered container handler.

The HFC-powered top pick is designed to provide

the zero emissions benefits of a battery electric option, with enough capacity to keep operators moving and avoid the need to stop in the middle of a shift to refuel or recharge. Refueling the top pick with hydrogen fuel is expected to take approximately 15 minutes, with the intention to provide eight to 10 hours of continuous run time, all while producing no harmful emissions – only water and heat. The hydrogen fuel cell works in tandem with an onboard lithium-ion battery to

either power the equipment directly or charge the onboard battery. The top pick is also equipped with a patented Hyster® energy recovery system for electric container handlers that recovers and stores energy from lowering loads and braking.

The Fenix Marine Services (FMS) container terminal, acquired in 2021 by the CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, uses compressed hydrogen delivered on-site to fuel the top pick.

Phillips Arm Part 1

One day, I was flying in the “Sched”. We took off from the Tree Spit in Campbell River, and flew past my house in PainterBarclay subdivision, over the pulp mill, and above the power lines at Seymour Narrows. On the left, I could see my uncle building road at Elk Bay. Then we flew over the settings I had just logged on Sonora Island, and did a banked turn over the camp in Phillips Arm. Looking down, I could see a really steep setting right behind the camp. I thought, “I hope I’m not there tomorrow.”

After my bowl of oatmeal with Ken, Nories’ falling contractor, I got my caulk boots on and went looking for the

foreman, Bill. “I’m going to send you with Harold and Lindsay to work on ‘The Beast’,” Bill said. The Beast was a yarding crane on the setting right behind camp. I played with Lindsay when we lived in Elk Bay Camp in the late fifties, he was Ken’s son. Harold was the son of Hillis Logging who Nories had bought the camp from. Another guy named Harold was operating the Beast and a guy named Paul was running the loader.

It took us about twenty minutes to get to the setting. The first turn we grabbed right behind the landing, two nice looking cedar logs, choked close to the ends, and sent to landing. Trouble is, there was no landing and I should’ve choked them with much longer ends. Took them quite awhile to unhook the chokers and send the rigging back. Somebody yelled down at us, “Hook longer ends, you stupid ass!”

Lindsay was wearing a torn shirt so Harold the

hook tender nicknamed him “Rags”. The setting was so steep that we took our lunches down with us and at quitting time we just ran the one thousand feet down to camp. Bill couldn’t figure out why we were in camp so fast and no crummy.

After a few days on the Beast, Bill came to me and said, “Kenny, I’m going to put you hooking on a steel spar. This is Joe, he’ll be your rigging slinger, and Gary’s the operator.”

We had to rig the tower up and I (with not too much steel spar experience) was in charge of doing that. With lots of help from my crew, we managed to get the tower up and yarding some logs.

One morning, there was a meeting in the yard. Nories’ weren’t getting any production. Bill fired all the choker men and said to me, “You’ll be working in the landing do you want to stay?”

“I’ll stay,” I said. It wasn’t long before a couple of planes landed bringing in some more rigging men and to take out the fired guys.

One morning Bill said to me, “You go with Jerry

and work on the tower.” Into the crummy and away we went. “Where’s the rest of the guys?” I asked. “Just you and me,” said Jerry. One month over one hundred rigging men were to come and go for four yarding sides. “How are we going to do this?” I asked. “Easy,” Jerry said, “you’re going to run the spar and I’ll be out in the bush.”

We got there and the spar was a hand jammer. Jerry showed me how to skin the rigging out and bring it in. We then made a runway log so I could use it to un-hook

The five-year, $1.32-million project is being funded by AECO and the Mitacs Accelerate Grants Program. It will build on earlier research done on Building Information Modeling (BIM) at a lab at the University of Toronto that was sponsored by RESCON.

The joint research project, entitled AI-enabled Digital Twins for Automation of Regulatory Systems in the Built Environment, is being done in partnership with leading researchers at Carleton University, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), École de technologie supérieure (ETS) Montreal, and the University of British Columbia (UBC). The team will explore how BIM and digital twins can impact the full building lifecycle from planning to development approvals to managing built assets more effectively. This will include developing BIM standards for the approval ecosystem.

While other jurisdictions have implemented similar initiatives, the regulatory environment and requirements of every jurisdiction are unique, so standards contextualized to Canada do not exist today. With leading academic partners in place, and industry partner AECO leading the effort with support from RESCON, Canada is well on its way to catch-up and surpass the others. SP

New Hamm HC Series Compactors: Powerful &

Digital-Ready

Hamm has launched new compactors in the HC series for earthworks.

Thanks to a platform strategy, the compaction specialist fulfills the specific requirements regarding national legislation across the world. The models for Europe, North America and the other EPA Tier 3 and EU Stage V/EPA Tier 4 markets offer high compaction power, a sustainable machine design, as well as exemplary ergonomics and comfort. One Platform For All Markets

The newly developed HC series from Hamm is replacing the compactors from the 3000 series and H series. The manufacturer has developed a uniform platform, offering models with an operating weight from 11 to 25 t (24251 to 55116 lbs) globally. The drum width on all models is 2140 mm (84,3in). The HAMMTRONIC and integrated ECO mode ensure that the rollers work as often as possible in the economical partial-load range. The speed is reduced for this – but, thanks to a large travel pump and electronic hill-start assist, this is achieved without compromising the power. Overall, this concept saves fuel and reduces the noise and exhaust gas emissions. With the optional automatic engine stop, the energy consumption can be reduced even further.

New Front Vehicle And Greater Steering Angle

A new design for the front vehicle and scraper provides significantly increased clearance at the drum. This prevents material accumulations, meaning that cleaning work is correspondingly seldom required. For the steering, a new cast articulated joint with articulated joint lock allows for a greater steering and swing angle with improved kinematics. In addition, thanks to the optimized weight distribution in combination with the Traction Control, the gradeability is increased. Hamm is also making improvements to the compaction force: The centrifugal force is increased by up to 15% in comparison with previous models, and the static linear load is as high as 80.6 kg/cm (451,6 lbs/in).

Hamm has increased the

Thanks to this design, Hamm has improved visibility even further. Here, the design of the engine hood with a view channel in particular allows for a clear view to the rear. When it’s dark, the optionally installable 10-way lighting with economical LED lights ensures sufficient light in all work situations. The exterior rear-view mirrors are installed to be low-vibration and can be adjusted from the operator’s platform. An additional mirror with proximity detection improves the view of the immediate environ-

ment. After switching off the machine, the Coming Home function provides additional safety as the light remains switched on for a brief period before the spotlights are deactivated automatically.

Equipped For The Digital Construction Site

The HC series is well prepared for the quality and communication requirements of the future. The “Smart Doc” app, which was developed by Hamm, graphically displays all of the key compaction parameters as well as the compaction progress, and logs the measured rigidity as well as the position data. Thanks to this app, even inexperienced drivers can immediately see which areas have been sufficiently compacted and which areas still require compaction. Hamm also already offers the option of integrating systems for avoiding collisions with a PDS (proximity detection system) interface. Furthermore, the process data can be communicated to thirdparty systems via a standardized interface.

Maintenance With JDlink Telematics System

Hamm offers the JDLink telematics system for maintenance and servicing, but also for applications planning. It visualizes the performance data of the rollers in a compact overview in real time. How To Prevent Them

Like any type of machinery, conveyor belt systems will eventually experience issues from time to time. Regardless of how well-maintained conveyor belt parts are, it’s normal to face problems, especially given that conveyor belts are one of the most used pieces of equipment across many industries.

While some problems are bound to happen, there are ways to prevent common issues and extend the life of your conveyor belt parts. Below are some of the most common conveyor belt problems and ways to prevent them.

Material Spillage

Material accidentally sliding, rolling, or spilling over is inevitable, especially for productions

that move a lot of loose or heavy products. However, if your conveyor system is experiencing an increase in spillage incidents, it could be an issue with areas that are causing excess shaking or rattling.

To prevent material spillage, be sure to keep your conveyor system well-maintained. Clean the conveyor belt and parts regularly and consider installing impact beds.

Seized Rollers

Excessive material spillage is the most common cause of seized rollers, which can halt production altogether. To prevent this downtime, we recommend installing Luff’s patented High Moisture Seal & Anti-Lock Shield. Manitowoc Launches The New Grove GRT8100-1

Rough-Terrain Crane

The upgraded version of the popular GRT8100 rough-terrain crane benefits from a new carrier that features MAXbase, the variable outrigger positioning system that enables better lifting capacity and site access.

There’s also a repowered engine for the GRT8100-1 that meets Euromot 5/Tier 4 Final requirements, delivering 10% more power as well as greater fuel efficiency.

Manitowoc used its attendance at bauma 2022 to launch its latest rough-terrain crane: the Grove GRT8100-1. This exciting upgrade of the hugely popular GRT8100 will be available from 2023 and offers a series of improvements over the original GRT8100. Many of the enhancements stem from a new chassis that shares commonality with the chassis from the proven 120 t capacity GRT8120. There’s also an updated engine and transmission package, and a new, wider cab with enhanced operating features.

“The GRT8100 has been a popular choice with customers worldwide. With the GRT8100-1, we have taken a great crane and made it even better,” said Federico Lovera, product manager for roughterrain, industrial, and lattice boom crawler cranes at Manitowoc. “The new Grove GRT8100-1 will go into production at our U.S. and Italian factories simultaneously, allowing deliveries to customers around the world to begin in early Q2 next year.”

The 100 t (100 USt) capacity GRT8100-1 features the same impressive 360° load charts as its predecessor. It also maintains the same overall dimensions, counterweight, and five-section, 12 - 47 m (39.2 - 154.3 ft) fullpower MEGAFORM® boom. However, with the new chassis on the GRT8100-1 customers have the option to integrate the highly flexible MAXbase variable position outrigger system, which offers up to 15% capacity improvements in certain configurations.

MAXbase also greatly simplifies setup on congested jobsites, with each of the four hydraulically telescoping outriggers extended over a range of symmetric and asymmetric positions. Also new to the outrigger design is an auto-

level feature for easy jobsite set-up, as well as Manitowoc’s smart, length-sensing Outrigger Monitoring System (OMS).

Access All Areas

The new carrier paves the way for a host of ergonomic improvements, with its flat, aluminum decking allowing for better rigging and maintenance access. Storage is improved, with the addition of space around the front deck plus a box and headache ball tray to the right-front side. On the left side, below the new cab, there is space to stow cribbing mats, while a compartment just above this includes not only additional storage, but also facilitates easy ground access to carrier electrical components.

Operator comfort is improved thanks to a new, wider Full Vision cab with features such as a tilt/telescopic steering column, a wider, heated, electrically adjustable seat, and a three-camera package that maximizes visibility around the crane. The larger door and wrap-around hand railing and grab bars encourage more secure access. A new LED lighting package includes new installations on each side of the carrier plus

dual, front-mounted lights on the 20° tiltable cab for a clearer view of the load and fewer blind spots.

A host of new standard features include footrest bars, improved foot pedal spacing, all-weather, molded floor mat, fold-down shelves behind the seat, a pivoting cup holder, USB charging port, a windshield sun visor, and a windshield washer for the skylight. Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) is now mounted on adjustable arms for easy adaptation with convenient and comfortable control coming from the armrest jog dial. Also included within CCS is the on-Crane Service Interface (0CSI) which provides enhanced diagnostics and monitoring systems for easy maintenance.

Fuel’s Gold

CCS also helps deliver significant savings in total cost of ownership on the GRT81001, allowing the new 6-cylinder, turbocharged and water-cooled Cummins B6.7L engine to operate in ECO mode. Here, the reduced engine speeds that promote improvements in fuel efficiency have been aided by the torque convertor installed with the new Rangeshift transmission.

Repowered to ensure compliance with Euromot Stage 5/Tier 4 Final regulations, the new crane benefits from approximately 10% more power, producing 224 kW (300 HP) at 2,500 rpm, while its single-module aftertreatment system with DEF reduces complexity and saves weight. SP

CASE Construction Equipment continues turning heads with major rollouts — on the heels of introducing the first-of-its-kind CASE Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader, the manufacturer is completely reloading its entire line of excavators.

The company recently introduced seven new models of E Series excavators — including two in new size classes — focused on enhancing the total operator experience in performance and control to deliver even greater productivity, operator satisfaction, and operational efficiency while driving down total cost of ownership over the life of the machine.

This includes the ability to display rear and sideview cameras at all times while still accessing machine data and controls, ensuring optimal visibility and jobsite awareness. This includes the popular optional CASE Max View display for even greater visibility and safer operation that provides 270 degrees of visibility around the machine. Next-Level Engine and Hydraulic Power

CASE excavators have always been known for smooth and responsive hydraulics thanks to the CASE Intelligent Hydraulic System, but the addition of new FPT Industrial engines throughout the product line, along with new enhancements to the hydraulic systems, provide even greater power and performance.

The FPT Industrial engines offer greater displacement, horsepower and torque than previous models within the CASE lineup, driving even more power and responsiveness for the operator. Four new work modes (SP for Super Power, P for Power, E for Eco and L for Lifting) are available to be set in a range of up to 10 throttle settings allowing operators to dial in perfor-

mance to their work, and the new Eco mode drives lower fuel consumption by as much as 18 percent compared to previous CASE excavators.

The addition of FPT Industrial engines to the CASE lineup brings with it the manufacturer’s legacy of innovative emissions solutions that are both maintenance free and drive greater efficiency for the owner/operator. New CASE E Series excavators feature an innovative combination of diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and particulate matter catalyst technologies that further provide greater fuel efficiency, systems reliability and no lifetime after-treatment replacement or mechanical service over time. The system features 13 patents that ensure effective emissions compliance and performance in all working environments.

New hydraulic priority capabilities further allow the operator to set machine performance and responsiveness to their liking. CASE calls this Hydraulic Flow Control Balance, and it allows the operator to set arm in, boom

Canada Releases First Step Towards Net Zero Concrete

Canada’s cement industry has been steadfast in its commitment to tackle climate change and reach net-zero by 2050.

The Roadmap to Net-Zero Carbon Concrete by 2050 provides guidance on the technologies, tools and policies needed for the Canadian cement industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions while ensuring it remains competitive in a global net zero economy.

Marie Glenn, Chair of the Board, and Adam Auer, President and CEO of the Cement Association of Canada joined the Hon. François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Canada to announce this important partnership milestone in working towards decarbonizing the most used building material in the world.

The Roadmap to Netzero Carbon Concrete was spearheaded by a joint gov-

ernment-industry working group, co-led by the Cement Association of Canada and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. The working group includes key players from the federal government, the Canadian cement and concrete industry, and relevant environmental experts.

Concrete has stood the test of time, laying the foundation upon which Canada’s communities have grown and prospered. It is found in virtually every class of infrastructure. The New Tadano AC 4.070-2 All Terrain Crane

The Most Powerful 70-Tonne Machine On The Market

When developing its new AC 4.070-2 all-terrain crane, Tadano made sure to pursue some extremely ambitious goals: “To put it simply, we wanted to bring to life a powerful and cutting-edge 70-tonne crane that would deliver the best performance on the market in as many axle load configurations as possible. And to put it plainly, that’s exactly what we did,” explains project manager Sascha Scholler, who was responsible for the development.

Among the various impressive characteristics, one stands out in particular: The AC 4.070-2 can transport its sizeable maximum counterweight of 11.9 tonnes by itself while staying within an axle load limit of 12 tonnes, and it can still manage an impressive 4.4 tonnes when the axle load is reduced to 10 tonnes instead. Needless to say, this makes the AC 4.070-2 an extremely flexible and versatile taxi crane. And there are also the lifting capacities, which are just as impressive: For example, with a main boom length of 50 meters, the crane can lift a good 7.1 tonnes at a radius of 12 meters, and this goes up to a total of 7.3 tonnes at a radius of 10 meters. “No other crane in its class can reach these lifting capacities,” Sascha Scholler underscores with a glint of pride in his eyes. Among other things, this means that the Tadano AC 4.070-2 is the perfect assist crane for erecting large lattice boom crawler cranes, as well as an outstanding crane for residential and functional building construction projects. Moreover, the crane’s extremely compact design only helps to boost these advantages even further: With a total length of 11.7 meters, a width of 2.55 meters, and a traveling height of 3.8 meters, it is the most compact four-axle unit of its class on the market.

The boom solution also plays a crucial role in the AC 4.070-2 crane’s versatility: Tadano offers two extensions for the crane’s 50-meter main boom – a swing-away jib with a length of 6.5 meters and a double folding swing-away

jib with a length of 16 meters, making it possible to reach a system length of up to 66 meters. In addition, there is also an optionally available runner.

Comprehensive Standard Equipment With IC-1 Plus & Flex Base

It goes without saying that the new Tadano AC 4.070-2 would not have been complete without the highly coveted IC-1 Plus control system, which determines the crane’s lifting capacity for every boom position as a function of the superstructure’s slewing angle. Moreover, the way these computations are carried out directly in the cab means that the lifting capacity for a specific radius is no longer limited to the lowest value for a pre-calculated 360° lifting capacity, but is instead determined in real time. As a result, the AC 4.070-2 is always able to take advantage of the maximum lifting capacity available to it, and the advantages provided by this system literally deliver invaluable support for lifts over the outriggers. And when used together with the Flex Base, an outrigger system that comes as standard and features outriggers that can be extended to any point within their available range, this enables the crane to take care of jobs that would normally be the exclusive purview of larger cranes. In fact, the Flex Base can be used to extend the outriggers in asymmetrical configurations instead of predefined extension positions, making it possible for crane operators to get the outriggers as close to obstacles as possible and use the maximum possible outrigger spread in any scenario. After this, all the IC-1 Plus has to do is to incorporate every single centimeter of outrigger extension into determining the lifting capacity.

In addition to the Flex Base, the innovative Tadano IC-1 Remote telematics solution for location-independent crane and fleet management is also available for the AC 4.070-2. This cloud solution provides remote access to

all relevant crane data from anywhere, enabling online troubleshooting by Tadano Support.

Another highlight behind the new AC 4.070-2 is the one-of-a-kind Tadano Surround View System, which features a separate monitor in the carrier cab that provides 360° visibility and graphically shows the maximum possible extension lengths for the outriggers and the counterweight tailswing radius from a bird’s eye view perspective. Accordingly, Tadano Surround View makes it significantly easier to optimally position the crane at work sites without the need for additional personnel. The system also provides assistance on the way to the work site by making it easier for crane operators to notice pedestrians and cyclists. The AC 4.070-2 can also be equipped with another Tadano innovation at the factory: With a special

transportation cradle and the required hydraulic connections, the four-axle unit is optionally prepared for work with the ESTA-awardwinning E-Pack. This feature is an electro-hydraulic system that comes with an integrated 32-kW electric motor that makes extremely quiet zero-emission crane operation possible. The E-Pack can be used to carry out all AC 4.070-2 crane functions without any negative impact on the corresponding maximum lifting capacity. Not only that, but other performance characteristics are comparable to those achieved with operation with a diesel engine in many work areas, expanding the range of applications of the AC 4.070-2 to indoor projects

and cleanrooms, for example. On top of this, the cost-effective single-engine design allows for climate-friendly crane operation thanks to its compatibility with various alternative diesel fuels, such as HVO. The use of these fuels generates fewer emissions and makes operating the crane more environmentally friendly. The redesigned wheel excavators feature smart technologies such as Smart Power Control (SPC) to improve machine efficiency while maintaining productivity through variable speed control and pump torque control. New Machine Offerings

The optional load isolation system engages automatically at 3.1 mph (5 km/h), reducing attachment and machine bouncing when traveling on uneven road surfaces. The standard auto hold brake sys-

Genie Celebrates Legacy of Company

Founder, Bud Bushnell

Genie is proud to announce that its founder, Sherman Ward “Bud” Bushnell, has been inducted into the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) Hall of Fame.

The AEM Hall of Fame recognizes the pioneers whose inventions, ideas, leadership and courage have contributed to the industry and our community’s quality of life.

Bud Bushnell (June 13, 1921 – November 14, 2020) founded Genie in 1966, launching his first material lifting device, which operated on compressed air, from a small warehouse in Seattle. Customers referred to the hissing noise the lift made as “Genie magic in a bottle,” which ultimately led to the company’s name.

A lifelong inventor and tinkerer, Bud was talking with customers at a trade show when inspiration struck again. The customer suggested that by putting a platform between three Genie® Hoist material lifts, it could lift not just material, but a person. Bud got to work, and the result was the Genie Teletower.

In 1974, Genie introduced the Superlift, which relied on another Bud Bushnell invention, a nesting aluminum mast section that proved to be a key innovation for other material lifts that followed.

Bushnell was inducted into the AEM Hall of Fame at AEM’s Annual Conference in Napa, Calif. on November 18, and the honor was accepted by Genie President Simon Meester.

“I am proud and humbled to have been able to accept this honor on behalf of Bud and the Bushnell family,”

Meester says. “Bud, with the Genie Hoist, fundamentally changed the way that people work at height and helped launch an industry. But beyond that, he established a culture at Genie that is rooted in a commitment to our customers, and to teamwork and respect. That foundation is

Keith Vanderhart, who started his career with Genie in 1976 and is now a Senior Buyer at Genie, had an opportunity to work side-by-side with Bud early in his career. “It was always such a pleasure to work with Bud. He was honest, he was kind, and he wanted things done right and built safely. He left a wonderful DNA at Genie that has allowed us to move forward, and do the same things,” Vanderhart says. “There isn’t anyone more deserving of this honor than Bud Bushnell.”

First asking, ‘how can we improve material handling,’ then ‘how can we put people in the air safely.’ If it wasn’t for Bud’s imagination and his drive for innovation, Genie wouldn’t be what it is today,” says Scott Owyen, Genie Director of Training, who has been with the company for 39 years. “The highest priority in everything Bud designed was safety, and helping people work safely at height is still the most important thing Genie and its equipment do today.”

Genie continued to grow as an innovative, customer- and culture-centric enterprise, and the company continued to invest in new product development. The Z®-30/20, an early articulating, self-propelled aerial work platform, was introduced in 1984, and Genie’s first electric boom lift followed in 1985. Today, more than 70% of the current Genie product line is electric or hybrid, and Genie lifts and telehandlers can be found on jobsites around the world.

“Bud left an incredible legacy at Genie,” Meester says. “Leading by example, putting the customer first and focusing on the team to make it happen made us the company we are over the last 55 years. We have a lot of exciting products coming our way in the next 10 years, and Bud’s spirit is in all of them.” SP

Talbert Celebrates 75 Years Of Removable Gooseneck Trailers

Talbert Manufacturing, a North American leader in specialized heavy-haul solutions, celebrates the 75th anniversary of the release of its non-ground bearing removable gooseneck trailer.

First introduced in 1947, the removable gooseneck technology revolutionized safety in the heavy haul trailer industry. Since its inception, Talbert has designed two different removable gooseneck trailers: the hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailers and the mechanical detachable gooseneck trailers.

“Safety is the hallmark of our innovative trailer designs,” said Troy Geisler, Talbert Manufacturing’s vice president of sales and marketing. “Austin Talbert designed the first gooseneck trailer to address the troubling number of injuries and deaths occurring when loading and unloading equipment. Talbert has always been on the leading edge of safe, durable trailer designs.”

The non-ground bearing hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailers were first introduced in 1962. The innovative design increases safety

rear. The loading and unloading angle was so steep that the tipping point could be reached quickly without warning. The lower the trailer deck is, the better and safer the loading angle. That’s why Talbert Manufacturing hydraulic tail series decks can be lowered to ground height or raised to meet a shipping dock for safe loading.

The Hydroneck creates additional customization options for balancing weight distribution. The trailers are customized with shims to help balance weight loads and safely distribute loads based on the load needs without having to rely on preset weight or height limits. Both the double drop series and the lowboy series can feature the Hydroneck.

While the Hydroneck is a popular connection option, some operators prefer

the ratchet neck design. The ratchet neck features safety pins to secure the gooseneck with five or seven preset heights which, in certain operations, can increase the ease of loading and unloading. These preset heights are customizable to the application and operator’s hauling requirements.

In 1989, Talbert designed and patented the mechanical removable gooseneck trailer. The mechanical gooseneck trailers are more lightweight than their hydraulic counterparts and don’t require hydraulics to position them. This type of attachment option is typically used for

double-drop trailers. The mechanical gooseneck trailers utilize front rollers and truck ramps to connect and disconnect the trailer from the truck. These are best suited for longer-distance trucking companies, where the load will be on the truck for several days and unloading will occur on a smooth, flat surface.

“When it comes to our trailers, there’s so much to consider outside the type of neck or trailer weight capacity. That’s why each trailer is built to the needs of the operator,” Geisler explained. “Each trailer we build and each innovation we come up with focuses on balancing op-

erators’ needs when it comes to productivity and safety.”

The suspension design delivers an improved ride, reduced road shock, wheel hop and vibrations to the vehicle for longer service life and fewer repairs. OTA Driver Of The Year On Trucking: ‘It’s My Happy Place’

Safe, professional, reliable, and a pillar in his community. That’s how friends, family and colleagues describe truck driver Don Dunbar, who was named the 2022 OTA-Volvo Trucks Canada Truck Driver of the Year at the OTA’s annual convention.

The Tandet Group driver is a 40-year veteran of the road, with nearly 3 millionkm under his belt and no preventable collisions.

“When we celebrate the Truck Driver of the Year Award, we celebrate an award that recognizes things that are very important to the industry. Yes, they are typically very safe over a significant period. But as importantly, they are individuals that give back to their community, and that community is widespread. They are people who others depend on, whether it’s at work or at home. Don exemplifies all those things,” says Scott Tilley, president of Tandet.

A self-described “gear head”, Don has always been attracted to big machines, working most of his younger years in the oil-drilling industry. He always had a passion for highway trucking, however, and eventually migrated to the industry, first with FedEx and then as a liquid bulk driver.

“When I was an operations manager in the drilling business, I used to drive the float once and while and the whole time I was thinking,

‘my happy place is on the road. The phone doesn’t ring. You turn on your tunes and away you go,” Don recalls. “So, in the back of my mind I always thought, ‘can I do this? Can I really make it in the trucking world?’ Eventually I just did it and I couldn’t be happier.”

Over his many years as a truck driver, Don has garnered many company awards and became an OTA Road Knight in 2015. He recalls his time travelling to schools and educating young people about the career opportunities in trucking with great appreciation.

“Some of my best experiences as a truck driver have been having the opportunity to be a Road Knight, to see the smiles on some of these kids’ faces when they are behind the big wheel and wanting to know more about trucks and the industry.”

Despite his hours on the road and loving devotion to his wife and daughters, Don finds time for people in his community – many elderly and alone – who could use a bit of support around the house. Don helps out as the neighbourhood maintenance man; and even if nothing needs fixing, he’s more than happy to offer a friendly ear for people to talk to.

“I can only imagine how difficult it is for a guy like Don, so active in his community, to actually perform those duties. There’s many weekends where we all want to sit up and kick our feet up and just enjoy life, but Don’s out there serving his community every day,” says Ryan Tilley.

While the Driver of the Year Award is not a punctuation on his career, Don does admit it does feel good to be acknowledged for his years of service to the industry.

Family Logging Operation Features W990s

In the small town of Laurens, South Carolina – population less than 10,000 – business has been good for Walker and Walker Logging during the past several years.

“Actually, it was better than usual for us,” said Tyler Walker, co-owner of Walker and Walker Logging, along with his dad Robert, his Uncle Billy, and his son Ryan. “We stayed healthy, and our logging and chip business has grown. We didn’t miss a beat. The combination of more demand for wood products and the opportunity to log areas formerly closed due to a lot of rain has kept us busy.”

In operation since 1978, the logging company, started by Robert and Billy, expanded its operation in 1998 by investing in a chipping business, hauling chips from the woods to area paper mills.

Along with the logging operation, the company runs 17 trucks – all Kenworths.

The latest models are eight Kenworth W990s purchased through Worldwide Equip-

ment in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Walker and Walker’s logging operation is turnkey. It contracts with private landowners and harvests about 70% hardwood and 30% pine trees, and then transports the logs to area mills for processing.

“Typically, the land is within a 50-mile radius of our operation,” said Tyler.

“The mills can be up to 100 miles for transport. We’ll normally make two or three runs with each truck to the mills, so we put on a lot of miles – around 130,000 miles annually per truck.

For the chipping side of our business, we chip mainly hardwood in the woods, and then take those to a paper mill located in Eastover – about 110 miles from our shop. We also take pine chips to Catawba, which

is 75 miles away, and then residue chips for pellets, to a mill in Greenwood.”

The company has been running Kenworths since 2004. “We were having some reliability and service problems with our other trucks, so we decided to buy four Kenworth T800s,” recalled Tyler. “I was graduating from high school when we bought them, so I’ve grown up having Kenworths in our fleet. We just sold off three of those original trucks, and we still have one in operation – so that tells you how good they’ve been.”

According to Tyler, one of the company’s keys to success is reliability. “And that goes all the way to our trucks,” he said. “We can’t afford to be down in the woods, so we need great parts and service support, which we’ve received that from Worldwide Equipment.”

When the company decided to order new trucks, it decided on the Kenworth W990. “We have a couple of W900s in our fleet and those have been great. I really like the looks of the traditional truck. The new W990 has more comfort features, along with a longer frame, and our drivers and mechanics really like that. It’s not like driving an old school truck – it drives more like a car. It’s so quiet, and the ride is smooth. It’s spacious and comfortable. Our drivers like them.”

Since the trucks operate in the woods with lots of differing terrain, altitude gains and

mud, the W990s are equipped with 550 hp engines and 13-speed manual transmissions. A wide track front axle was also spec’d to provide a tighter wheel cut.

Tyler said the new W990s are rolling billboards for the company. “We had the W990 painted all the same color and put our name on the door in reflective vinyl to be noticeable and stand out over the average truck,” he said. “The trucks are the face of our business – that is what the public sees all the time, so we wanted to have a respectable image. It’s resulted in more people calling looking for a job or

calling with timber to sell because they saw the truck.”

Going forward, Tyler said the company sees plenty of work in the forecast. “We have plenty of work lined up,” he said. “There is a lot of growth in our area with housing and commercial building.

In the last two years, about 40% of the tracts that we have harvested have been for building projects. We’re also looking at different markets within the timber industry to sustain our growth – so we plan to add more trucks once we find qualified drivers.” SP

Professional Logging Truck Driver Training Will Benefit Indigenous People, Youth

Eight eligible British Columbians will receive skills training to prepare them for employment as professional logging truck drivers in the North Okanagan and Shuswap area.

“This project is empowering Indigenous people and youth by giving them new job opportunities in the professional logging sector,” said Nicholas Simons, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction. “Participants who graduate from the program will receive the skills they need to find rewarding careers as professional logging truck drivers in the North Okanagan and Shuswap area.”

“Graduates of this training program will receive the mandatory entry-level training (MELT), which has been required for new truck drivers since October 2021, and will help people become professional logging truck drivers, while also making our highways safe” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Participants will receive 16 weeks of employability and occupational skills training, including the B.C. Forest Safety Council Professional Industry Driver theory and mentorship program, as well as MELT driver training, 10 weeks of on-the-job

“This is a great opportunity for Indigenous people and youth to gain the skills and experience needed to become professional logging truck drivers in the region,” said Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee. “By increasing training and work experience opportunities, we are making sure people have the right skills to secure goodpaying, long-term jobs.”

Full-time, group-based learning for the project starts Nov. 28, 2022, and runs until June 2023. People interested in learning about this or other CEP projects can contact their local WorkBC centre.

“At Okanagan College we are working with industry partners to design and offer training that responds to local and regional workforce needs, and that provides more people with opportunities to advance in their careers.” said Neil Fassina, president, Okanagan College. “The workintegrated learning model means students benefit from real experience and classroom

support, so that by the end of the program they’re ready to hit the ground running – or in this case, driving.”

This announcement is part of StrongerBC’s Future Ready plan. Future Ready is making education and training more accessible, affordable and relevant to help businesses grow.

2022 has been a very exciting year at Jade Equipment. With the addition of new staff members and some changes in job titles, Jade was busy in the office, in the shop, and on the road.

We added two new service trucks to our fleet, which will keep our road techs in top shape to make it to all their service calls. New motor graders were added to our rental lineup. Our Territory Sales Managers were hard at work making new contacts, doing product demos and selling machines.
