In early April 2023, Takeuchi-US celebrated a significant milestone when the 1000th compact track loader – a TL12R2 model – rolled off the assembly line at the manufacturer’s facility in Moore, South Carolina.

in April 2022. The company previously produced track loaders at one of its factories in the Nagano province of Japan. However, upon observing the North American market’s growing demand for Takeuchi compact track loaders over time, Takeuchi chose to begin assembling these machines in the U.S. This decision has eliminated the need to ship track loaders from an overseas facility to North American dealers and customers. As Takeuchi’s global markets expand, the company expects to export some machines from the U.S. to other countries.

This 156,000-square-foot production facility, Takeuchi’s first in North America, officially began assembling compact track loaders on September 22, 2022.

“It’s been quite a journey so far,” said Jeff Stewart, president of Takeuchi-US. “Bringing our track loader production to the U.S., while exciting for all of us, required a great deal of planning and collaboration. From locating the right location here in

Stewart and Ralph Wabnitz, director of manufacturing for Takeuchi-US, joined employees at the South Carolina facility to celebrate the production milestone with a company meeting and lunch. Employees also received commemorative “1000th Machine” stickers for their hard hats and took a group photo marking the achievement.

Takeuchi announced its acquisition of the Moore, SC plant just one year ago

“We started out with just 10 employees at this facility a few short months ago,” said Wabnitz. “Today, we have 117 on staff, with a goal of 140 by the end of 2023. Our goal is to assemble all Takeuchi CTL models here in Moore by the end of 2023. I’m very proud of what our team here has accomplished, and I look forward seeing what new milestones we’re able to achieve in the months and years ahead.” SP

Greater efficiency and production

Depending on region, the 950 and 962 are equipped with either conventional or optimized Z bar linkage. The conventional Z bar design delivers high breakout force at ground level. Dressta Reveals New TD-15M, TD-25M Crawler Dozers

Mid- and Heavy Size Dozers Arrive in North American Market Dressta has revealed a pair of new crawler dozers for North America. The new TD-15M and TD-25M crawler dozers cover two different sizes and can provide operators a new lease on dozer life. Operators can expect reduced fatigue, lower operating costs and longer breaks in-between service from these two new machines.

The TD-15M is intended for the mid-size market for operators, while the TD-25M is slated for the heaviest of jobs. Beyond the horsepower available with turbocharged

Cummins engines, these dozers are designed for versatility and ease of use with electrohydraulic controlled proportional joysticks.

Both new dozer cabs focus on operator comfort and ease of useability. The TD-15M and TD-25M have all-new high-visibility cabs, which provide ultimate blade control and accuracy to do more in less time.

Both cabs offer 33% more glass surface area, a tapered engine hood with clear sightlines to the blade corners, a rear-view camera (optional

Rototilt Adds Extended Warranty For Machine Couplers

Rototilt is introducing a two-year warranty on all new machine couplers delivered from January 1, 2023.

As a result, the standard warranty is being extended from one to two years. “We set ourselves apart by calculating the warranty period from the delivery date, rather than limiting it to a maximum number of hours of use. Our machine couplers are robust and stable, which enables us to offer a two-year warranty,” says Jan Karlsson, Head of Orders and Aftermarket at Rototilt.

Rototilt’s machine couplers are the result of thorough product development in order to meet future de-

Develon Adds New DX1000LC-7 Excavator

Previewed during CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023, the DX1000LC-7 excavator is now available.

Formerly known as Doosan Construction Equipment, Develon is pleased to expand its next-generation -7 Series crawler excavator offering in North America with the new DX1000LC-7.

The new 100-metric-ton conventional tail swing excavator is ideal for pit and

quarry customers working in aggregate settings and wellsuited as a large earthmoving and excavating machine for heavy construction and infrastructure projects.

“The DX1000LC-7 is designed to serve a growing crawler excavator size class,” says Thomas Lee, director of

product management at DEVELON. “It can efficiently load large amounts of material into trucks at quarries. On construction sites, the DX1000LC-7 excavates, stockpiles and loads material into dump trucks.”

Maximize Productivity

The DX1000LC-7 excavator includes smart machine technology and a rugged design for maximum uptime protection. Features of the new DX1000LC-7 include a crossed-design swing bearing that distributes stress for machine uptime protection.

Attention was given to reinforcing the excavator’s wear points — boosting the machine’s reliability and keeping it running longer. The excavator also includes a heavyduty front design with additional reinforcement on key stress points to ensure uptime protection.

Operators can choose the swing priority mode for bank cutting and when the swing angle is large to increase the swing speed and maximize productivity. The boom up function is prioritized when the swing priority is turned off.

“The new DX1000LC-7 excavator has the highest swing torque in its size class,” says Lee. “This is especially important for aggregate producers when they routinely turn or rotate the excavator’s upper structure to move rocks and other material.”

Smart Power

The DX1000LC-7 provides a high level of efficiency for customers. The excavator’s exclusive D-ECOPOWER system helps to improve productivity and save fuel. The hydraulic system precisely controls oil flow and optimizes the engine’s available horsepower. The system’s efficiency not only improves productivity but also reduces fuel consumption.

Operators can choose between two modes: boom and swing. This allows operators to adjust the machine to best match the job at hand, giving priority to boom or swing movements. Boom priority is ideal in harsh conditions, such as digging over the front or dumping over the side of the machine. Swing priority works best in normal or lightduty digging situations.

Intuitive Comfort

As soon as operators step into the cab, they will appreciate the push-button start and high-quality interior fit and finish. The DX1000LC-7 cab contains an 8-inch touch screen LCD monitor for high visibility and easy access. The screen is 30% larger than previous models.

Ergonomic adjustments such as the newly designed foot pedals and heated seats make long days more enjoyable for excavator operators.

Operators can configure the shortcut button on the joystick to their liking so they can adjust the wipers, mute the audio or control the camera. The button can also be used to activate the optional intelligent floating boom feature. This enhancement helps to increase operator effectiveness and keep the operator’s hand on the controls.

Dynapac Introduces CC900 e & CC1000 e Rollers

The introduction of the CC900 e and CC1000 e, sets a clear course on Dynapac’s path to offering more sustainable rollers with all the power and performance of their diesel counterparts.

Both rollers come with all the well-known advantages electrically powered vehicles bring with them such as increased cost savings, fewer moving parts, and maintenance - while offering a powerful battery capable of

completing a full day of operation without recharging. The CC900 e and CC1000 e also deliver the same static linear load, amplitude, gradeability, and travel speed as the diesel-powered models on which they are based, with no

compromise on productivity or job site performance.

A typical “day in the life of a 1.6-ton roller” normally consists of repair work with hand-laying from a “spreader” or sometimes following a small-sized paver on sidewalks/ bicycle lines. Based on experience, this guarantees that the battery will last for a full day of work. In 90% of the cases, about 20 to 30% of the battery level was left after the workday was over.

With the fast charger, 400 Volt / 3-phase system it takes 1.3 hours to reach 80% charging level. The 230 volt/ 1-phase charger needs 6 hours to reach 80% of its charging capacity. Dynapac is additionally planning to provide adapters making it possible to also use standard carcharging stations.

Both rollers in this segment are primarily used in road repair work and are intermittently used. With conventional diesel motors, this means that they are often left idling while the asphalt is raked into position. After compaction, the machines travel to the next jobsite where they are also left idling for

extended periods. With a standard diesel-powered machine, a great deal of energy and money is wasted, let alone the negative environmental impact caused by emissions. Because an electric roller doesn’t idle when not in use, the energy consumption is zero. Additionally, both models are significantly quieter than conventional ones which is essential because rollers of this size and class tend to work in urban areas where

there is a need to minimize noise and emissions.

As with any electric vehicle, the significant reduction of moving parts ensures less costly maintenance caused by daily wear and tear. Expensive maintenance such as engine oil and filter changes, as well as the refilling of coolant liquids, is no longer an issue.

When given the opportunity to test and operate the CC900 e and CC1000 e rollers, operators reacted very positively. Because both

electric rollers are based on the diesel-driven roller, there was a great deal of familiarity. The exact same interface and feeling in terms of handling, meant that the amount of new learning necessary was almost non-existent. Benefits that they particularly enjoyed included lower noise levels, no exhaust fumes, fewer daily maintenance points and being easy to understand and operate. SP

LiuGong showcased its newest battery electric wheel loader for the North American market recently at the 2023 CONEXPO-CON/AGG show.

The LiuGong 856H-E MAX Wheel Loader is part of the company’s range of electric construction vehicles worldwide. At CONEXPO, booth F9205 in the Festival Grounds, LiuGong demonstrated how its battery electric vehicles stack up with conventional machines and guide dealers through the process of going electric.

The roots of Wacker Neuson date back to the year 1848. Innovative solutions have revolutionized the industry time and again. The focus has been on the customer and his requirements for 175 years.

The foundation for Wacker Neuson’s success story was laid by Johann Christian Wacker in 1848, when he set up a blacksmith’s shop in Dresden. Since then, the company has introduced innovations time and again, which have revolutionized work on the construction site. In 1930, Hermann Wacker set new standards in the construction industry of the time with an innovative electric rammer. The vibratory rammers are used for soil compaction to this day. Wacker Neuson also kept coming up with new developments in the compact machines segment. The Vertical Digging System (VDS) is an innovation in the field of compact excavators. Since 1988, the VDS has made work more efficient, faster and more pleasant for the operator. This system, which tips up the superstructure, allows exact vertical digging even on uneven ground surfaces, on curbs and slopes. Since 2005, articulated wheel loaders, and later even compact telehandlers have been part of Wacker Neuson’s portfolio, in order to offer customers everything from a single source. The first Dual View Dumper was also a real innovation in 2019. Thanks to the wheel dumper’s 180° rotating seat and control panel, the operator always keeps an overview, which ensures greater

Zero Emission Success

With the introduction of the zero emission series, Wacker Neuson broke new ground in 2014 and took on a pioneering role once again. BHP And Hatch Commence Electric Smelting Furnace Pilot

BHP and global engineering, project management and professional services firm, Hatch, have signed an agreement to design an electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant in support of a decision to construct this facility in Australia.

The facility will aim to demonstrate a pathway to lower carbon dioxide (CO2) intensity in steel production using iron ore from BHP’s Pilbara mines for BHP’s steelmaking customers.

The small-scale demonstration plant would be used to collaborate with steel producers and technology providers to generate and share learnings with the aim of accelerating scale up of ESF plant designs.

The pilot facility would be intended to test and optimise production of iron from the ESF, a new type of furnace that is being developed by leading steel producers and technology companies targeting low CO2 emission-intensity steel. The ESF is capable of producing steel from iron ore using renewable electricity and hydrogen replacing coking coal, when combined with a direct reduced iron (DRI) step. Estimates show that reductions of more than 80 percent in CO2 emission intensity are potentially achievable processing Pilbara iron ores through a DRI-ESF pathway, compared with the current industry average for the conventional blast furnace steel route.

The ESF allows for greater flexibility in input raw materials, addressing a key barrier to

wider adoption of other lower CO2 emissions production routes, such as use of electric arc furnaces which are designed for scrap steel and high grade DRI only. The ESF also has the potential to be integrated into a steel plant’s existing downstream production units.

The pilot facility will enable deeper and more accurate insights into the performance of this technology for converting iron ores into molten iron and steel. Planned test programs will help de-risk further investment in commercial scale projects, thereby complementing development plans of BHP’s steel customers. This scale-up approach has been utilised by other industry demonstrations such as Sweden’s HYBRIT project.

BHP and Hatch will assess several locations in Australia for the proposed facility based on supporting infrastructure, technology skills and the availability of local partnerships to build and operate the facility.

BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, Vandita Pant, said: “We see the ESF process as a critical breakthrough in significantly reducing the carbon emissions intensity of steel production and one that provides an opportunity for iron ore from our Pilbara mines.

The steel industry has identified the ESF as a viable option to use a wider range of raw materials and steel companies globally are looking to build commercial-scale ESF plants as part of their CO2 emission reduction roadmaps.”

BHP’s Group Sales and Marketing Officer, Michiel Hovers, said: “Hatch is a key partner in carbon emissions reduction initiatives across the world. We are pleased that we can collaborate with Hatch, alongside BHP’s existing customer and research partnerships, to further progress the development of pathways towards a lower GHG emission footprint for the steelmaking industry. Recycled Materials Industry Calls For Stronger Laws To Curb Theft Of Catalytic Converters

National Registry, Other Tools to Help Law Enforcement, Allow Legal Recycling of Critical Minerals

The recycled materials industry is calling for Congress and state legislatures to pass stronger laws to help curb theft of catalytic converters, while supporting the legal recycling of these devices that are a renewable source of finite critical minerals. ISRI, as The Voice of the Recycled Materials Industry™ worked with law enforcement and other key stakeholder groups to identify potential legislative

solutions that would deter the growing problem of catalytic converter thefts.

“The recycled materials industry has a history of working with law enforcement and local authorities to help combat metals theft, including catalytic converters,” said ISRI President Robin Wiener. “We are urging lawmakers – at both federal and state levels – to consider taking action to help reduce

these crimes which are impacting consumers and recycling facilities where thefts are becoming all too frequent. In states where similar legislative principles have been put in effect, we have seen positive results.”

More than 30 million catalytic converters are legally recycled every year – mainly through the recycling of endof-life automobiles. Catalytic converters contain critical

minerals the Department of Interior deems essential to America’s national and economic security. These highquality materials are used in making electronics, new converters, catalysts, medical devices, and other consumer products.

ISRI’s recommends putting in place tools to help law enforcement effectively apprehend and prosecute criminals involved in converter thefts. ISRI is calling on Congress and states to require:

• Identification and National Registry for Catalytic Converters: ISRI supports the marking and tracking through state and national registries of attached and functioning catalytic converters. This would involve marking the devices with an identifying number in a permanent manner at the time of initial sale of the vehicle. ISRI also supports marking programs on vehicles in continued use, except endof-life vehicles that should be exempted from marking of the converter. ISRI would work with those states that already have registry requirements in place to tie them into the national registry when it is established.

• Proof of Legitimacy: Restrict possession of detached catalytic converters or catalytic converter substrate to entities who should reasonably be in possession through their normal course of business, or individuals who can provide proof of legitimate ownership. This would provide law enforcement information necessary to identify entities that would be allowed to legitimately

purchase detached catalytic converters.

• Recordkeeping: Require recordkeeping for all purchases of detached catalytic converters and at every level of purchase. Records should be required for individual and businessto-business transactions, to include the date of sale, the entities involved in the sale, and the volume of converters sold.

ISRI actively works with law enforcement national and local groups, including: the International Association of the Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA), the International Association of Crime Analysts, multiple state associations of chiefs of police, police departments and Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) centers. This includes collaborating on ways to deter metal and catalytic converter theft, as well as offering training to law enforcement groups on how consumers can help protect their vehicles from such theft.

ISRI’s policy recommendations came from member volunteers working in ISRI’s Catalytic Converter Theft Working Group established in 2020, when America began to see a sharp increase in this type of crime. The working group brings together metal recyclers from around the

country to share information on catalytic converter crimes and law enforcement efforts in different jurisdictions and provide training sessions for law enforcement.

The group realized that legislation was needed to establish who should be allowed to possess detached converters, who should be allowed to buy them, and that record keeping requirements need to be in place for law enforcement to have transparency in the marketplace. By putting these steps in place, the goal would be to eliminate the black-market points of entry for the stolen goods, and ultimately to end catalytic converter thefts.

Steve Levetan, Executive Vice President of Atlantabased Pull-A-Part, LLC and chairman of the working group said their effort had two objectives. “First, metal recyclers wanted to stop these crimes which are impacting not just consumers but also recycled metals companies falling victim to these thieves. Second, we wanted to leverage the industry expertise to craft solutions that have been proven to bring real results to stopping this type of crime,” he said. “We owe it to our communities to take action, and that’s exactly what we are doing in state after state.” SP

Mecalac Brings Compact Loader Line To North America

a short boom, which offers a better tipping load, whereas the other four models come with a long — standard — boom which maximizes tipping height. Long or short boom, the MCL series machines yield multi-functionality through compatibility with a wide range of attachments. From pallet forks and multi-purpose buckets to augers, mowers and snow blades, these loaders provide maximum efficiency while minimizing downtime in a wide range of industries. Within the construction industry, operators may use a compact loader to mount pallet forks or multi-purpose buckets. Landscape contractors with mini loaders can use Mecalac’s quick-coupling technology to pair augers, mowers, loader buckets and more. Canadian Mining Companies Recognized For Excellence In Sustainable Mining

The Mining Association of Canada’s (MAC) Community of Interest Advisory Panel has selected New Gold’s New Afton Mine and Rio Tinto’s Diavik Mine, both leading operations in Canada’s mining sector, to receive this year’s prestigious Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Excellence Awards.

New Gold and Rio Tinto’s sustainability projects, focused on community engagement and environmental stewardship, were recognized at the CIM Awards Gala in Montreal.

“Mining companies recognized by the TSM Excellence Awards represent the best of the best when it comes to exemplary responsible practices and strong commitments to ESG,” said Pierre Gratton, MAC’s President and CEO. “Our industry has a particularly important role to play in ensuring the minerals and metals needed for the technologies we rely on are readily available and it is integral that they be mined using the highest standards, like TSM, in the world.”

A mandatory component

of MAC membership, TSM is driving performance improvement across a range of social and environmental issues where it matters most — at the mine site level. This focus on mine site performance makes TSM a go-to system for investors and manufacturers looking to invest in and purchase responsibly mined materials. A national independent Community of Interest Advisory Panel oversees the program, including representatives from Indigenous communities, environmental organizations, labour, finance, local mining communities, social and faith-based organizations and academia.

TSM performance is evaluated across a set of detailed environmental and social performance standards,

including tailings management, climate change, water stewardship, Indigenous and community relationships, safety and health, biodiversity conservation, crisis management and preventing child and forced labour. As a constantly evolving program new TSM protocols are introduced to meet society’s expectations on what constitutes good practice and a new standard focused on equity, diversity and inclusion is expected to be published later this year.

“We are proud that TSM, a made-in-Canada standard, is now in the process of being implemented by 14 mining associations around the world, making it the most widespread ESG program of its kind,” said Gratton.

With demand for minerals and metals presently soaring, due in large part to their essential nature in low-carbon technologies, ensuring there is enough supply to enable the global energy transition is imperative. In addition

to mining new deposits for materials, like copper critical to green tech, the need to increase the rate at which metals are recycled is high, and there is an opportunity and growing need to do more.

Transitioning to a cleaner economy starts with modifying practices and technologies to create economic opportunities out of the materials that might otherwise be thrown away. This is the essence of what is known as the “circular economy”, the idea that supports business practices that extract as much value as Continued on page 33

possible from resources by recycling, repairing, reusing, repurposing, or refurbishing products and materials eliminating waste and GHG emissions. Rio Tinto’s Diavik diamonds mine exemplifies circular economy best practices through partnership and local community engagement, both central tenets of TSM’s Indigenous and Community Relationships and Climate Change protocols.

Several years ago, employees at Diavik recognized an opportunity to repurpose copper wire from predominantly completed underground mining levels. A core group of passionate employees took the initiative to propose to Diavik to salvage copper wire where possible, and collect it in containers for transport off-site to donate to community groups.

Diavik endorsed this idea and included this activity as part of scheduled work, so those who volunteered were paid for their time. This project worked to a small extent but grew substantially when, in 2019, Diane Haché, a retired employee, and her partner Michel Tremblay, a current employee, led the volunteer

efforts to maximize the mine’s recycling efforts, through stripping and shipping of the salvaged copper for sale, with all proceeds going towards Diavik’s Community Contribution Program. Since the project’s inception, the results have been significant, raising over $500,000 for local charities like the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation, YWCA NWT, HomeBase Yellowknife, Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation, and NWT On The Land Collaborative, and diverting roughly 225,000 pounds of copper cable from the landfill. This community-led project continues to expand, and in 2022, the Common Ground Crew, an initiative run through the Yellowknife Women’s Society that provides day labour to people experiencing homelessness, was brought on board. The crew worked alongside Diane Haché to process the copper, with wages taken from the proceeds. The initiative provided residents with several hundred hours of employment while also increasing the volume processed.

Diavik has purchased a copper wire stripper to in-

crease the rate and volume of salvaged copper that can be stripped. Further, copper cable can and will be salvaged through the mine’s closure process to go towards recycling and generating funds that can benefit local communities while minimizing the mine’s environmental footprint.

Representatives of MAC’s Community of Interest Advisory Panel were impressed by the significant impact this innovative recycling program has had in the local area, through employment, volunteer opportunities and charitable donations. They also noted how this initiative is providing one of the key metals essential to the green energy transition, copper, by repurposing materials that have already been used – an

excellent example of the circular economy at work.

CIB To Invest In Critical Minerals Infrastructure

The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has announced its plan to invest in critical minerals enabling infrastructure. The CIB will collaborate with government, Indigenous partners and private investors to finance infrastructure which unlocks mineral deposits required for the green and digital economy.

The Canadian Critical Minerals Strategy unveiled in December 2022 positioned the CIB as a complementary financing source to accelerate the development of Canada’s critical mineral resources and supply chains.

Enabling infrastructure includes access roads, clean power generation and transmission along with wastewater management facilities which support the mining of Canada’s critical mineral deposits.

The CIB will also seek to invest in the infrastructure needed to advance projects

in the critical minerals supply chain.

Development of critical mineral mines is essential to support Canada’s goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

When I was at Dougan’s they had a sit down breakfast. They waited until everyone had made their lunch and sat down at the table. Then they brought out the eggs, pancakes and stuff. This wasn’t to my liking so I just had a bowl of porridge and a half of a grapefruit. I made a sandwich with 2 slices of mock chicken, 2 slices of cheese, some tomato slices, some onions and lots of bacon with plenty of mayo. I would eat that after the first load left the landing in the morning.

On Mondays, the crew and wives, etc would get on the “TQ” — Dougan’s camp boat at Kelsey Bay. Jackson Bay was across Johnstone Strait past York Island into the Wellbore Channel on the left. At times this was a pretty rough piece of water. The Salmon River empties out into the straits, fast tides in the straits plus a wicked westerly wind. One time with the boat fully loaded we ran into a bit of a problem. One of the fallers, Charlie was moving his wife and kids into camp. Boat was so full that his washing machine was put up on the bow. About two thirds across it got pretty rough, the washer fell overboard, Dave cut the throttle back. Mike yelled,

“keep the throttle up!” People were starting to panic. One wife had to be restrained as she thought she would be better off in the water. The water settled down a bit once we got into the Wellbores and we made it to camp without any more problems. First time in my life I was scared!

Shifts started on Tuesday. After work, we dug a sack of clams and hung them over the wharf to clean the sand out of them. The next night we would grab a pound of butter and a bottle of HP sauce and go over to Jack and Lydia’s house and eat the clams standing around the stove, bullshitting.

Me and my brothers had longer hair so we were “The Hippies.” On Saturdays, the hippies would go to Dave’s trailer to watch Gunsmoke. Dave usually had a gallon of red wine for us, which was usually destroyed watching TV. We would call Dave “Mad Dougan” after Matt Dillon.

One night we went to George and Sue’s. I had eaten a rotten orange in the afternoon and it didn’t sit well with me. I puked all over the carpet — not good.

Later in the spring, with

more light we would head over to Glendale Cove. There was an old abandoned camp of BCFP’s there. Apparently it was a 300 man camp. When Mel and his son Gene needed a door for Gene’s addition to his trailer, they just cut the door and frame out with the power saw.

We would go fishing in the Glendale River, lots of nice cutthroat trout.

Does the name “Rudy Begonia” ring a bell? His actual name was Warren Philip. He was one of my buddies that they hired green. He set chokers for one shift and then went pulling rigging. He liked logging and being in the woods so much that he went to BCIT and got a foresters degree. He passed away with cancer at an early age.

Old Black was on its last legs so a Bucyrus 38-B was purchased. I remember it took a long time to walk it out to the settings, it only travelled about 2 mph, even tried pulling it with a dump truck.

I left Dougan Logging in the summer to go be a hippie and do a Tour-de-BC. Went to the Interior, saw Bella Coola, went to Prince Rupert hung around Hixon for awhile and came back and went to work for Sammy at Menzies mountain. SP

The Unstoppable Rise Of The Compact Track Loader

The compact track loader has come from nowhere to outsell any other compact product in the US. But why? Versatility and speed are the answer, says Yanmar CE’s Buck Storlie.

In many major global markets the undisputed king of compact equipment is the mini-excavator. And they sure are popular in the US, too, where some 60,000 units are sold every year. But even this huge number is dwarfed by sales of compact track loaders, which currently sell an incredible 90,000 units a year.

The compact track loader, or CTL, has leapfrogged the skid steer loader (sales of which are 50% down on a decade ago), which has long been popular in the US. The upward trajectory of CTL sales in recent years has been near vertical. “I think it’s particularly popular in the US because it can cover ground and move material so fast –this is a big country with big sites!” laughs Buck Storlie, Yanmar Compact Equipment (CE) product manager for North America. “The tracks give the edge over skid steers’

wheels, in that they can work more days a year, even in very damp conditions, thanks to the tracks’ much lower ground pressure. With their much greater traction, they are also more stable and have a higher ability to push into a pile. And they are extremely versatile tool carriers, which give them the flexibility to do a wide range of jobs, with minimal tool change-over times. And, at the end of the day, you can put it on a trailer and tow it home behind an average pick up.”

Trackmarks In The Desert Storlie should know, he has been working at Yanmar CE’s US factory for 27 years, most of that working with compact track loaders. So, who better to help bring Yanmar’s first all new range of CTLs to market – a range debuted so successfully at the recent CONEXPO?

The first CONEXPO

since the ill-fated event in 2020 was overwhelmed by COVID, there was a lot of pent-up excitement about this year’s show, and not just from visitors, but dealers and manufacturers too. “We were expecting a big turnout – and weren’t disappointed” says Storlie. “The market is at the top of a wave, stimulus money is starting to flow into projects and optimism that this situation might stick around for a while is high.”

Yanmar CE has transformed itself in the almost decade since the company was last in Vegas, so that today it’s almost unrecognizable. And the changes and improvements go much deeper than the new glossy ‘Premium Red’ color scheme. With ambitions to be a full liner in the compact equipment sphere, Yanmar is filling product gaps in its mini-excavator and compact wheel loader line ups. But the new prod-

ucts that are really getting the Yanmar guys in North America excited is the launch of an all-new four model Yanmar compact track loader range –the company’s first in its current line-up.

Designed With The North American Market In Mind

Given the size of the market to aim at, Yanmar is optimistic at the prospect of bet-

ter fulfilling North America compact equipment market needs. The new range is a ground-up design, developed after extensive research on customer needs and competitor analysis, and in close cooperation with Yanmar’s in-house skid steer and CTL experts. The result is a high performing, durable range that is keenly priced, the latter helped by being built in the US, saving on intercontinental shipping costs.

The four-model line-up comes with open ROPS and all-weather cabs, with cab configured models expected to dominate sales. “Owners want to jump out of their comfortable pickups and into an equally comfortable fully loaded cab in their loader,” says Storlie.

The launch of Yanmar’s CTL range is arguably the most important product launch for the company in the US since it introduced the zero-tail swing excavator. The four machines range from the 2,100lb rated operating capacity (ROC) TL65RS, with

its 67 hp Yanmar engine, up to the 3,600lb ROC TL100VS, with its 103.5hp Yanmar engine. Together, these four machines cover almost all (93%) of the CTL market in North America.

“This is huge for us – it gets us into the largest compact construction machine segment in the US. But we start in a pretty good position,” believes Storlie. “The buyers of CTLs are often the same as those that buy mini excavators. So, whereas in the past customers might say: ‘Okay, Yanmar fulfils 50% of my needs’ now we can be seen as full liners and supply them with all their compact requirements.”

Pilot/Flying J Realizing Efficiencies With Entrans’ Smart Trailer Technology

When you’re covering thousands of miles each week, keeping your fleet in top condition and drivers safe can be monumental challenges.

Fortunately, advancements in trailer technologies and equipment are giving fleet managers new hope, especially when it comes to tire maintenance. Engineered Transportation International (EnTrans) has partnered with Drōv Technologies AirBoxOne smart trailer solution to bring a game-changing technology to the industry—an intelligent trailer technology system with dynamic tire inflation. Tire maintenance has come a long way over the years. Once a guessing game, tire health has become easier to gauge with advancements

Pilot drivers have a dedicated mobile phone equipped with an app to access the dashboard and manage the system. This al-

lows drivers and fleet managers to receive alerts and notifications through their devices.

“This technology allows us to adjust for maximum fuel loading, which has allowed us to add more gallons per load on our Oklahoma City trailer, which could equate to eight more loads per year,” said Brent Hickman, Senior Manager of Equipment Maintenance and Sales at Pilot/Flying J.

Stellar Introduces NXT52 Hooklift To Lineup

This feature allows the operator to position the body locks in specific locations to accommodate body locks that may not be in the correct spot. The versatility of this system eliminates the need to cut locks off, re-weld or repaint.

In addition to the universal latching system, the NXT52 features a universal hydraulic reservoir. The reservoir can

be mounted in various positions on the unit to avoid any workaround needs in the instance that there are chassis items that may interfere with normal reservoir mounting.

Similar to all Stellar Hooklifts, the NXT52 is completely manufactured in the U.S. This unit has a 54/61.75-inch hook height and rectangularstyle secondary jib. With approximately a 10.5-inch lost load height, Stellar offers the industry-leading low profile, providing a lower vertical center of gravity and the ability to accommodate down to 6-inch subframe heights.

This hooklift was made with the end user in mind, with many features built for timesaving convenience. In addition to the hydraulic reservoir, integrated speed enhancements and soft-stop features on the lift cylinder reduce the time needed for a full extend cycle by 75% and allows the body to be brought to a resting position gently on the body saddles.

Additionally, the NXT52 comes equipped with either air controls or electronic radio remote controls for efficient operation of the hooklift. These control systems

offer proportional control operation to allow for precise control in various situations. A feature of the NXT Series,

the radio remote control, allows for unit operation in either the chassis cab or standing outside of the cab. The

Early data from the Pilot trailers that feature the dynamic tire system has shown a 51.7% increase in tire life. Based on a trailer expected to travel 2.5 million miles over 20 years, the company is estimating the tire cost at half of the original estimated costs

for the life of the trailer without the system.

Mack Trucks Introduces Medium-Duty MD Electric

Mack Trucks has revealed its Mack MD Electric, the company’s first electric vehicle in the medium-duty segment of the trucking industry.

Mack revealed the truck for the first time recently at the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) 2023 Work Truck Show.

The MD Electric will complement its highly efficient, diesel-powered MD model sibling, which has experienced growing customer demand since its introduction in 2020. The addition of a zero-tailpipe emissions battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to the Mack medium-duty lineup also supports the company’s long-term sustainability goals.

“Mack established itself as an electrification leader with the heavy-duty Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle, and we’re excited to add the MD Electric to our zero-tailpipe emissions lineup,” said Martin Weissburg, global president of Mack Trucks. “This is another important step in our

efforts to drive decarbonization and a more sustainable future, and we plan to continue investing in technologies that help improve the environment and society.”

The MD Electric is the second electric vehicle introduced by Mack Trucks to the industry. The first was the Mack LR Electric, which went into production in December 2021.

The Mack MD Electric will be available like its diesel counterpart in Class 6 and Class 7 ratings. The Class 6 model has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 25,995 pounds, and the Class 7 model has a GVWR of 33,000 pounds. Both models are exempt from the 12 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET). The Mack MD Electric will be produced at Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO) in Roanoke Valley,

Virginia, where Mack began production of the Mack MD Series in 2020.

“The Mack MD Electric joins the full lineup of Class 6 to 8 vehicles Mack offers to help customers meet their application needs,” said Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “Building on the success of the diesel-powered Mack MD Series, the Mack MD Electric will help our customers meet their sustainability goals without sacrificing the durability, reliability and total cost of ownership for which Mack is known.”

The MD Electric’s threephase Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor and all on-board accessories are powered by Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Oxide lithium-ion batteries, either in a 150kWh or 240kWH configuration. The MD

Electric can be charged through AC or DC charging units. The regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the multiple stops the vehicle makes each day.

Developed specifically for medium-duty applications, the Mack MD Electric is built with the same focus on reliability, durability and productivity customers have come to expect from a Mack truck. Designed with the heavy-duty quality of its diesel-powered

counterparts, the MD Electric is available in 4x2 configurations featuring a sharp wheel cut for enhanced maneuverability in tight urban settings.

Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Receives Approval From The Government Of Canada

The marine container terminal project in Delta, British Columbia, will deliver critical capacity and resilience for Canada’s supply chains, and will support growing national trade needs.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority welcomes the Government of Canada’s decision to approve the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project, announced following a rigorous environmental assessment process that started in 2013.

The decision comes as Canada’s container trade remains on a long-term growth trajectory, with west coast marine container terminals forecast to hit capacity by the mid- to late-2020s.

“With this approval, we can advance one of Canada’s most important trade infrastructure projects to date, bolster our national supplychain resilience, and deliver generational economic benefits for Canadians and Canadian businesses,” said Robin Silvester, president and CEO

of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the federal agency mandated to enable Canada’s trade through the Port of Vancouver. “I’d like to thank Indigenous and local communities, scientists, industry, chambers of commerce, and all tiers of government, who have played such an important role in shaping the project to date.”

The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project includes building new land and a new three-berth marine container terminal near existing port terminals at Roberts Bank in Delta, B.C. The project will incrementally deliver an additional 2.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of capacity, ultimately increasing Canada’s west coast container capacity by approximately

one-third.

Besides enabling Canada’s growing trade, additional container terminal capacity at the Port of Vancouver will strengthen national supply-chain resilience, by creating additional “buffer” to handle cargo surges, such as those experienced through the pandemic, and support recovery from weatherrelated disruptions, such as the severe flooding that B.C. experienced in late 2021 that contributed to port cargo backlogs well into 2022.

The project will deliver substantial economic benefits, including more than 18,000 jobs during construction; more than 17,300 ongoing jobs; an estimated $3 billion in GDP annually once built; and $631 million

in tax revenue to support services for Canadians.

The port authority is leading the project under its public-interest mandate as a federal agency, leveraging its long history of building high-quality sustainable infrastructure across the Lower Mainland, including— in partnership with container terminal operator DP World—the Centerm Expansion Project, which recently won a platinum Envision Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.

“Roberts Bank Terminal 2 has been designed in a way that ensures it aligns with our work toward our vision to make the Port of Vancouver the world’s most sustainable port, including protecting

and enhancing the natural environment and reflecting Indigenous priorities,” said Judy Rogers, port authority board chair. “The port authority has collaborated with Indigenous groups on the project for more than a decade and now we look forward to working together to deliver economic, cultural and environmental opportunities and initiatives.”

The port authority will continue to work closely with Indigenous groups on environmental mitigation and training, employment, contracting opportunities, as well as providing benefits through the Indigenous Legacy Benefit Fund and signed agreements with 26 Indigenous groups, as it continues its commitment to respect-

ful, long-term relationship building.

The new marine terminal will be located in subtidal waters to minimize environmental effects. It will be funded by the port authority and private investment.

In line with the port authority’s commitment to support local communities, the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 community investment program will provide $6 million to Delta organizations and students as part of the project. The port authority will now continue to work toward obtaining other applicable approvals and permits to advance the project. SP

Brutus Truck Bodies is a company that has gained an international reputation for excellence in management, design and manufacturing and has worked with diligence to develop a program to assist individuals with disabilities in their community by offering them a hand-up.

But It Takes Leadership

With the outstanding leadership of James Bernique, a 28-year veteran employee and the company’s Fabrication and Product Support Manager, Brutus Truck Bodies has reached out into the community and with the assistance of the Penticton and District Society For Community Living has hired two young men with disabilities. Then as a team, has worked to integrate them into the dayto-day staff. James, who has the full support of company president Gerry Turchak, glows with pride as he speaks about these young men, “This has been a great experience for us but it has been a fabulous experience for both Lyn-

den and Taylor.”

Lynden Hicks joined the company a few years ago and started on the clean-up crew. He displayed an insatiable appetite for learning and before long, and with his own initiative, started building mud flap supports and other small parts. When the position of metal-saw operator became available, a job that requires a mix of extreme accuracy and safety, he approached James and asked if he could get a chance. James obliged and the result has been nothing but success for all. James offered, “I’m so pleased with the way Lynden has developed. He is doing an outstanding job and he is just one-of-the-boys.”

Taylor Shea has been with the company for almost six years now and although he classifies himself as the custodian, he does much more than that. James first met Taylor on a bowling team and although Taylor was very shy James liked the young man, he saw potential in him and when an opportunity arose, he hired him. However, this was not without a level of risk as Taylor had tried several other jobs with various companies in the past that regrettably did not work out. But from day one, and under the guidance of James and with the support of the Brutus team, Taylor has developed into an outstanding employee who is

respected by every member of the staff. When asked what he likes most about working for James and with the Brutus team, he did not hesitate and with an infectious, glowing smile said, “I like working here. Everyday is different. They like me.”

James added two more items to Taylor’s list of accomplishments, “He started driving the golf carts here at the shop, has moved some vehicles, studied hard and has recently taken the test and has his BC Drivers Learner’s Permit. Recently, Taylor has been promoted

to manage Chassis Check-In, where he inspects every truck that comes in, logs mileage, VIN numbers, matches it with the work order and adds any other truck details logging everything on the server and I’m proud to report he is doing excellent at his new position.”

It’s a Win-Win

Although there is nothing unique about what James Bernique and Brutus Truck Bodies has done and is continuing to do, they have developed a successful way to provide not only a hand-out but a hand-

up to deserving members of the community. “I just wish more companies would initiate programs like this.” James went on, “It is so rewarding to see the growth and development in these two young men. It’s a win-win for all concerned… for them, their families and for our crews and the company.”

B.C. Drives Industry Shift To Cleaner HeavyDuty Transportation

British Columbia’s commercial vehicle sector is accelerating toward the clean transportation economy with provincial support to help organizations achieve their climate goals, reduce costs and remain competitive.

“The future of transportation is clean, electric and carbon emission-free. British Columbians are embracing zero-emission vehicles faster than any other jurisdiction in Canada, but we know it can be more difficult for the commercial vehicle sector to make the switch,” said Premier David Eby. “Supporting industry with new heavy-duty charging stations and support to buy and develop zero-emission vehicles reduces emissions and means cleaner air for all.”

Three CleanBC programs are receiving new funding to encourage industry to move to zero-emission vehicles: the Commercial Vehicle Pilots (CVP) program, the Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge, and support for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle charging infrastructure.

“B.C. is already leading Canada in the switch to zeroemission vehicles for personal transportation, with a record number of British Columbians choosing to go electric,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “Today’s announcement will ensure that B.C. businesses are leading the way in the emerging, rapidly growing market for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles. break down barriers and accelerate adoption, so we can power our economy with clean electricity instead of fossil fuels.”

Seaspan Ferries Corporation has received support to acquire fast-charging stations and two large-battery electric vehicles to move heavy cargo. The Seaspan project is one of 20 projects that shared $17.3 million under the CleanBC Go Electric CVP program to support buying electric vehicles, including hydrogenfuel-cell vehicles and charging ports. The CVP program has a budget of $89 million over seven years, which includes $40 million from Budget 2023.

“At Seaspan Ferries, we are proud to be considered a national leader in decarbonizing marine transportation and our investment in next generation battery-electric terminal tractors is an example of these efforts, made possible with support through CleanBC and the Port of Vancouver,” commented Derek Ollmann, president, Seaspan Marine Transportation. “Seaspan is also a Canadian leader in the use of battery and liquefied natural gas hybrid-powered ferries, and we are increasing our use of renewable fuels across our fleets by using biodiesel and renewable natural gas to minimize our fleets’ greenhouse gas emissions.”

The CVP program encourages organizations to adopt medium- and heavyduty zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) to help decarbonize commercial vehicles, including on- and off-road medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, aircraft, marine vessels and rail. Every ZEV on the road, especially those replacing heavy, fuel-hungry big vehicles, means a reduction in pollution, resulting in cleaner air, cleaner water and quieter streets – and fewer fuel and maintenance costs, which helps businesses remain competitive.

ernment’s commitment to develop charging infrastructure at truck-only rest stops and create opportunities to adopt new technology as we work to decarbonize the commercial transportation sector,” said Dave Earle, president and CEO, BC Trucking Association (BCTA).

Under StrongerBC for the Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge, an additional $30 million will help address the technology gap in the hard-to-decarbonize commercial vehicle sector, while also creating economic growth, jobs and continued investment in a growing B.C.based ZEV technology sector.

“Innovation is how we propel our province and our economy forward, as we work to create a sustainable, inclusive ecosystem that makes a real difference in the day-today lives of British Columbians,” stated Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “With the introduction of the 2022 ZEVs, this important investment in new charging and hydrogenfuelling infrastructure across the province is a crucial step forward for the continued growth of B.C.’s innovative ZEV sector.”

The Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge supports accelerating ZEV technology from the idea stage to market, helping innovators and entrepreneurs through the design and build phases of new clean technologies for the commercial vehicle sector, including medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, marine, rail and aviation. An expression of interest period is open for candidates specializing in ZEV technology.

“Decreasing trucking industry emissions and encouraging more efficient goods movement are crucial parts of our CleanBC commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in transportation by a third by 2030,” stated Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

“Our upcoming Clean Transportation Action Plan will build strong and resilient infrastructure that supports safe travel and goods movement that goes hand in hand with a net-zero future for all British Columbians.”

To support British Columbians’ transition to electric vehicles, $19.5 million is being invested in specialist mediumand heavy-duty vehicle charging stations under the CleanBC Public Charging Program, allowing for 130 new mediumand heavy-duty charging stations throughout the province. This funding is in addition to $26 million previously announced for more light-duty charging stations throughout B.C.

“Many B.C. businesses are showing leadership in emissions reduction and accelerating the transition to cleaner technologies by replacing emissions-heavy gaspowered commercial vehicles with zero-emission vehicles in their day-to-day operations and across the shipbuilding industry,” said George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. “Through the CleanBC Roadmap, our government is helping businesses make the switch by providing targeted financial supports to help drive innovation and adoption, and lower costs to industry.”
