New Holland Launches 3 New Compact Wheel Loaders

The New Holland Construction compact wheel loader (CWL) portfolio is growing.

Three new, advanced C series models – the W60C, W70C and W80C LR – lead the 2024 expansion of the CWL lineup. These models have been engineered to elevate efficiency, productivity and comfort for operators and owners, regardless of the job site or task.

“The development of these advanced CWL models was driven by our goal to enhance the operator and owner experience and the need to put more options with more versatility in their hands,” states Dan Kakareka, product manager for New Holland Construction North America. “What’s also evident with the three new models is how they provide exceptional stability, enabling operators to handle larger loads with ease, maneuver confidently in challenging conditions

and enjoy smoother travel, even on rough terrain.”

Next Generation

With three new models joining the New Holland Construction CWL portfolio, each model delivers a distinct need for the market.

The W60C shares the same robust frame as the W50C but with enhanced horsepower to elevate output. Notable upgrades to horsepower and the Z-Bar boom design tailor the W60C for applications such as landscaping, material handling, snow removal and more.

Customers can expect the W70C to tackle the same jobs as the W60C but with more horsepower, speed and performance. With a lighter operating weight of 12,000 pounds and 74 horsepower, this model is ideal for a wide range of tasks and a variety of

markets, including light construction, landscaping, contracting and municipalities.

Designed for the agricultural market, the W80C LR model is a high-speed option that employs a lift capacity of 10,600 pounds and an operating weight of 13,000 pounds. The W80C LR is optimized for tasks like loading feed into total mixed ration mixers or stacking bales in barns.

Operator Experience

Operator comfort, safety and experience are paramount to maintaining productivity. The W60C, W70C and W80C LR offer new features geared toward improved comfort and ease of operation. Updates like a new spacious ROPS/FOPScertified cab with advanced climate control options and a fully sealed, pressurized cab to minimize noise and keep out dust help create a conducive work environment for the operator.

These attributes are exemplified by the three new CWLs, which are powered by a 4-cylinder, 3.4L FPT Industrial F5H engine, meeting Tier IV final emission standards. The engine includes CEGR and DOC that help minimize maintenance and cost for operators and owners, allowing them to focus more on the work ahead instead of being parked in the shop. With these new models, New Holland Construction has eliminated the need for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which significantly reduces the required downtime associated with regeneration and costly filter replacements.

Tigercat releases mulching head for swing carriers in response to fire mitigation equipment requirements in western North America.

Wildfire is proving to be one of the greatest challenges facing foresters, landowners, governments and environmental organizations in the 21st century. The summer fire season over the last several years in North America has devastated millions of hectares of forest land, destroying

wildlife habitat and carbon sinks, while releasing massive amounts of carbon and particulate matter into the atmosphere. Excessive fuel build-up on the ground is having a devastating effect.

Tigercat recently released a mulching head designed to mount on a Tigercat LX830E carrier. This machine can

tackle steep slopes and operate within dense stands to reduce build-up of woody debris as a mitigation measure to guard against future wildfires.

The new 4161-15 head has a 1,5 m (59 in) mulching swath, 130 degree wrist pivot, and a pin-on rake for added utility. Like all Tigercat mulching heads, it is strengthto-weight optimized and fitted with large bearings.

Many of the components including the bearings, sprockets, seals and timing belt are common to the Tigercat 4061 series mulching heads and thus field proven. Hydraulic hoses are routed through the open tip boom into the top of the wrist, providing excellent protection. The replaceable wear liner is field serviceable. Removable covers allow easy access to all service points.

Additional new dealers for New England and Florida will be appointed in the coming months and talks are underway with several potential dealers to cover existing blind spots.

Change in the management of RUBBLE MASTER Americas Corp.

One of the first tasks of the new MD with his experienced team will be the introduction of a new RM product in the North American market, as RUBBLE MASTER is preparing to globally launch a large 44” x 28” jaw crusher in the second quarter of the year. This jaw crusher, designed from the ground up, the RM J110X, is based on the RM NEXT philosophy and will incorporate the manufacturer’s new high efficiency drive concepts in addition to numerous groundbreaking and innovative features. This will both significantly expand the application range of RM crushers, open up new opportunities in the market and also support RUBBLE MASTER’s growth path. The interational launch will be in April in Austria and the first demo event in the US will take place Q2/2024. More detailed information will be published in the course of the next months.

The current growth and the further planned development make several measures necessary to provide the infrastructure to take the company to $100 million and beyond. As a first step, the parts warehouse was moved from Memphis, TN, to Ennis, TX, in order to create the necessary capacity for further growth and to put the key staff under one roof. Parallel to this, construction of a completely new building began near the existing location. The new facility, expected to open in Q3 2024, will be highly visible from Interstate 45. It will also include a training centre for sales and technical training, making it a world-class North American headquarters that dealers and customers will love to visit.

The positive development of the dealer network as well as the development of the North American market and RM’s organization in the US was substantially driven by Jackson McAdam. Under his leadership, the dealer network was greatly expanded and strengthened, and enormous growth was achieved. After 4 years as Managing Director of RUBBLE MASTER Americas Corp., Jackson McAdam will return to Europe to take on a new role within the RM Group and to support the international growth with his expertise. The new managing director will be appointed by June this year at the latest.

In the management of the RM Group, founder and owner of RUBBLE MASTER, Gerald Hanisch, will withdraw from the day-to-day business and concentrate on the strategic role of ownership.

New products on their way, screen production enhanced The new RM J110X jaw crusher will not be the last innovation seen by RM. Several product developments are in the pipeline and will both expand the portfolio of crushers and broaden the product offering of screens. As the demand for the RM screen line is rising internationally, the RM Group follows a plan to enhance its screen production together with a local partner in Northern Ireland to ensure development and production of RM screens according to the market requirements.

MAC And The Copper Mark Collaborate

The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and The Copper Mark are pleased to announce a new collaboration on an important pilot project to enhance the assurance processes of both Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) and the Copper Mark standards.

TSM and the Copper Mark have always been committed for their standards and assurance processes to provide accountability, transparency, and credibility for their users. Both standards have also been committed to leadership in equivalency and alignment in the mining standards space. At the heart of this commitment are the initiatives’ assurance processes, whereby companies’ and sites are independently verified by external assurance providers.

As part of this pilot, MAC and the Copper Mark are merging their respective assurance processes for pilot testing by MAC members undergoing TSM verification in 2024, with the Cop-

per Mark secretariat managing the assurance process on behalf of MAC. MAC expects nearly all of its members’ facilities undergoing verification in 2024 to do so, which represents approximately 30 facilities in 2024.

In TSM’s case, the merged assurance process adds new features, including:

• Mandatory site visits for operating facilities undergoing verification.

• Prior review for completeness by the Copper Mark secretariat of verifiers’ assurance plans.

• Inclusion of a media scan to inform assurance plans.

• Minimum standards for employee interviews during the verification process.

• Completion of a gap assessment by verifiers of any performance below TSM Level A and publication of action plans by facilities to address those gaps.

In the case of the Copper Mark, the pilot will improve the Copper Mark’s understanding of the important role played by national panels in TSM in Canada and elsewhere, through:

• TSM’s requirement of an independent TSM Oversight Process will continue but will be managed by Copper Mark secretariat.

• The Copper Mark staff will also join as observers of MAC’s national Community-of-Interest panel,

including the post-verification review process.

• Verification results will be disclosed publicly on the TSM website by MAC consistent with TSM’s usual processes, as well as on the Copper Mark website. More information on this pilot will soon be available on the TSM and the Copper Mark websites.

WorkSafeBC Advances Crane Safety In B.C.

WorkSafeBC continues to work with industry and workers to advance new safety initiatives and regulatory measures to improve crane safety in B.C.

WorkSafeBC will be bringing crane employers, labour, and the BC Association for Crane Safety (BC Crane Safety) together following four crane-related incidents in Metro Vancouver since the beginning of 2024.

Tragically, one of those incidents at the Oakridge Park construction site in Vancouver resulted in a worker fatality.

“Our thoughts and our deepest condolences go out to the family, co-workers and friends affected by the tragic death of Yuridia Flores,” said Todd McDonald, Head of Prevention Services at WorkSafeBC. “Incidents involving cranes can be catastrophic, and we are very concerned with the number of incidents that have occurred in such a short period of time.”

Investigations

WorkSafeBC is actively working to understand the cause of the four cranerelated incidents, and any contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future. Preliminary evidence, at this time,

suggests there are few, if any, similarities between the incidents or the equipment involved.

While WorkSafeBC cannot discuss specific details of the incidents, any findings that would improve workplace safety will be immediately incorporated into WorkSafeBC’s inspections, educational materials, and crane safety initiatives.

“Multiple incidents involving cranes demonstrate that workplace safety can never be taken for granted,” said McDonald. “And while each of the recent incidents appears to be unique, employers are reminded of the need to be vigilant in ensuring the maintenance of their equipment and the safe working procedures of their staff.”

WorkSafeBC’s Crane Initiative

While cranes in B.C. typically operate safely and without incident, they have the potential to create catastrophic risk for workers.

WorkSafeBC has a crane safety initiative that aims to identify and eliminate unsafe work practices and equip-

ment hazards. As part of this initiative, WorkSafeBC has a Provincial Crane Inspection Team with extensive experience and training in crane use. This team conducts proactive risk-based inspections across B.C. to ensure employers are effectively managing the key risks across all stages of crane use.

In 2019, following a crane collapse in Seattle, WorkSafeBC refreshed its craneinitiative strategy based on the risks related to tower cranes. The primary risks identified were:

• Risks during assembly/ disassembly.

• Operator qualification/ competency.

• Certification and inspection of equipment.

• Risk of crane-to-crane or crane-to-voltage contacts.

Regulatory changes have been made — and are underway — along with industry tools and resources, and inspectional initiatives related to these four risk areas. More information on this work is available online at: Tower Crane Safety.

“We are constantly assessing areas of risk in the

workplace and the measures in place to prevent workplace injuries,” said McDonald. “We monitor for industry trends and serious crane incidents around the world, and we are working with industry and workers to ensure B.C. has the right controls in place to keep workers safe.”

Stakeholder outreach

WorkSafeBC is committed to working with employers and workers to advance new safety initiatives and regulatory measures to improve crane safety in B.C.

WorkSafeBC works closely with BC Crane Safety to create resources for the industry to ensure they understand hazards related to tower crane erection, operation, inspection and maintenance, and how to comply with the Oc-

cupational Health and Safety Regulation.

In March, WorkSafeBC and BC Crane Safety met with crane employers and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 to discuss a proposed regulation that will require employers to submit a Notice of Project for tower crane erection, climbing, repositioning, and dismantling.

In the next few weeks, WorkSafeBC will be convening a meeting with industry and labour to communicate its current and planned initiatives on crane safety, and to gather additional perspectives on work that can be done to improve crane safety in B.C., along with its prioritization.

Safety At Menzies Bay

One of the first experiences I had with any kind of Safety Program was grade six at Campbellton Elementary School.

Ivolunteered to serve on the School Safety Program. In the mornings when Gordie Lee and I got to school, we would get our signs and help the students across the three crosswalks near our school. Grades one and two were dismissed half an hour earlier than the rest of the students, our job was to line up these kids and escort them across the crosswalks.

This safety training would come in handy a couple years later when I was riding with my Dad (foreman for Norie Bros. Logging) for the summer. “I’m going to send you with old Bill the hooker to give him a hand stringing some strawline,” he said.

“You have to look after yourself out here,” Bill told me. “Always be scanning the logging activity.” Working in logging was a dangerous occupation. When you worked on the crew it was a team; everybody working together to get some logs.

In the camps I worked at, there was no official safety program. When I was working with Sam at Nories, the Workmen’s Compensation Board (WCB) wanted the crews to have safety meetings and keep records of them. Bill the manager told Sammy to have a safety meeting. In the morning Sam took two guys and had a safety meeting. Two rigging crews and only two men attended the meeting. Sam gave one guy paper and pen and told him to write down the names, date, and all items attended to, and that was the safety meeting! The rest of the crew

found out about it on the way home in the crummy.

After I started at M&B Menzies Bay, I was working third man on the grapple yarder. Me and the hooker were in the crummy talking and watching the logs coming into the landing, when another crummy drives into the landing.

“Who is it?” the hooker asked.

“It looks like Russ Waller,” I replied.

The hooker said, “Safety Meeting!”

a management rep. Seven departments in all so about fifteen to twenty people at a meeting. I had to go to a union meeting and get someone to nominate me for the job. There was a safety meeting and safety tour every month. When there was an accident or incident it had to be investigated and corrective action was to be taken. In a month, about half of the days I was to be busy with safety stuff and didn’t have to do any manual labour. I got to use my brain instead of having to put the caulk boots on — LOL! Attending safety seminars, organizing company picnics, and making safety calendars were some of the things I did.

The hooker called the operator on the radio to come down for a safety meeting. Off of the machine came the operator, and we had a talk for well over an hour. We discussed what happened at the latest safety meeting, union business, and anything else we wanted to talk about. I was quite amazed that we would stop production to have this meeting. I would eventually learn about the tremendous amount of money safety would cost.

Later, I’m thinking the “safety rep. job” looks kind of interesting, and wondered how to get it. The Union and management made up the safety program. Each department had a union rep and

Once a year, the “Job Safety Analysis” had to be reviewed and updated. This book had all the jobs for each department listed, with hazards listed and corrective action to be taken. When an employee was to do a different job, the foreman for that department would go over the “job safety analysis” to prevent them from getting hurt.

There was always lots of swag given out by M&B. Badges, stickers, pins, hats, coats, and cups. Safety milestones were always recognized with some employees getting over fifty years accident free. SP

New 973 Rounds Out Updated Cat Track Loader Lineup

A track loader is the one machine that can do it all – clear, load, dig, carry, fill and more – even in tough or slick ground conditions.

The new Cat 973 Track Loader combines unmatched versatility with up to 10 percent better fuel efficiency, more productivity, cab improvements and optional Payload technology. The 275 hp (205 kW) crawler loader has an operating weight of 65,901 lb (29 892 kg) and replaces the 973K worldwide. It joins the 953 (160 hp/119 kW) and 963 (202 hp/151 kW) in the Cat track loader line.

Operation Made Easy

The 973 is the largest track loader in the industry, but still offers agility and ease of operation. The updated cab features a suspension seat and adjustable armrests/controls. An intuitive 10-inch (254 mm) touchscreen dash display is easy to use and features a standard High Definition

rearview camera. Slope Indicate helps make operation easier by showing machine mainfall and cross slope right on the display. Select joystick or V-lever and pedal steering for transmission controls and either joystick or 2-lever implement controls. The joystick option provides familiar controls for operators experienced with skid steers/compact track loaders. With either control scheme, operators can set implement response – fine, normal, coarse – to match operator preference or application. Repetitive lift, lower, rack, dump and float functions can be preset to make jobs like truck loading easier. Smoother implement and steering response, and improved steering performance provide more controllability.

More Productivity + Less Fuel = Greater Profit

The 973 is powered by a Cat C9.3B engine. Fuel consumption is reduced up to 10 percent with the Auto Mode that will adapt the engine speed to the load. Eco Mode will use even lower speed for further reduction in fuel consumption in lighter duty applications. Power Mode will keep engine speed high for a feel of readily available power at all times.

An optional Performance Series bucket boosts productivity up to 20 percent. An optional Fusion™ Quick Coupler enables fast attachment changes. A variety of buckets, forks and other tools can be shared among track loaders, wheel loaders and other Fusion compatible machines.

New Technology Reduces Environmental Impact From Mining

New advanced chemical processes being developed and refined in British Columbia will give the mining industry a way to extract critical minerals with almost no net environmental impact, helping advance B.C.’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

“B.C. is home to a growing clean-energy sector, accounting for 20% of Canada’s world-leading clean-tech firms that are having positive impacts globally,” said Josie Osborne, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “With near net-zero environmental impact in the extraction of critical metals and minerals, pH7 is demonstrating the kind of innovative thinking that can transform mining around the world.”

PH7 Technologies has created a proprietary closedloop process using advanced chemistry to extract and refine critical metals that will help the mining sector transition to renewable energy in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. The new process also enables efficient metal extraction from low-grade resources or difficult substrates in a

cost-effective way. The metal alloys, including platinum group metals, copper, and tin, produced by pH7 are then refined by industrial customers.

“To combat climate change, we know that it is essential for industries to reduce their emissions,” said Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-Edmonds. “PH7’s pilot project could help the mining sector reduce their emissions and water usage while extracting the critical minerals needed to produce clean energy like electric vehicles, solar panels, wind turbines, electrical transmission lines and batteries.”

With $850,000 from the Province’s Innovative Clean Energy (ICE) Fund, pH7 will conduct a pilot project to process 5,000 kilograms per day of raw materials into approximately 2,500 kg of extracted platinum group metals per

year. This method results in significantly less greenhouse gas emissions, electricity and water usage compared to mining or other recycling methods.

“We at pH7 are seeing a real opportunity to advance in the path to net-zero and are honoured to be receiving the support of the Province’s ICE Fund as we explore continued growth and commercialization of our technology,” said Mohammad Doostmohammadi, founder and CEO of pH7 Technologies. “The clean, green future we envision requires more critical metals than we have access to currently. Through innovation and collaboration, we look forward to bringing our clean-tech solution to help scale the extraction of metals and make existing processes much more sustainable and cost-effective.”

“Every Manitoban should benefit from our province’s wealth of critical minerals,” said Kinew. “Working with community leaders, Indigenous nations and industry, we can protect our environment, and grow our lowcarbon economy. Our new critical mineral strategy will

set Manitoba on a positive path forward, for generations to come.”

“Our government is focused on ensuring Manitoba is a leader in responsible mining practices and that mineral development is done in partnership with First Nations and surrounding communities,” Moses said. “These projects need to be informed by communities and stakeholders every step of the way, which is why we’re asking Manitobans to help shape our plans for critical minerals going forward.”

6 Tips For Selecting The Right Traveling Axle Trailer

Finding a level surface with plenty of room to load a trailer on today’s congested jobsite is challenging. Towing and recovery operators have it even worse — struggling to move dead equipment, often singlehandedly, while also contending with traffic, poor visibility and soft shoulders. Operators in the towing and recovery, rental and construction industries have found traveling axle trailers provide the ideal combination of features to help alleviate these challenges.

By matching traveling axle trailer specs and available features with their operational needs, companies can achieve a safer, more durable hauling solution that will also provide a better return on investment.

Here are six features operators should consider for optimal loading efficiency in any condition.

#1 - Capacity

Required capacity is the starting point of any trailer

purchase. Generally, traveling axle manufacturers offer models with 40- and 55-ton capacity, making them ideal for transporting a variety of equipment. If the intended load is mostly larger equipment, like excavators or pavers, pay close attention to the manufacturer’s 10-foot capacity rating. For mixed loads of small and mid-sized equipment, such as skid steers, lifts or buses, the overall capacity will give a better indication of how many pieces of equipment can be safely transported.

#2 - Loaded Deck Height

Another spec operators should keep in mind to limit permit costs and maximize productivity is loaded deck height. Within the U.S., legal load height is 13 feet, 6 inches, but operators will often encounter overhead obstacles that are lower. In these situations, a single inch can mean a difference of hours when it

comes to getting from point A to point B and beyond. A traveling axle trailer with a loaded deck height of 36 inches provides optimal flexibility for transporting taller equipment such as excavators and buses.

#3 - Load Angle

Generally speaking, the lower the load angle, the easier loading will be, making this another important consideration. A low load angle allows operators to simply drive or, in the case of dead or immobile equipment, winch loads onto the deck. It’s also necessary for transporting machines with low ground clearance, such as pavers and rollers.

#4 - Construction

For loading in difficult conditions, such as muddy or uneven terrain, operators should look for a trailer with an equally rugged design. A rig’s piggyback cylinder provides power and traction for

moving axles. While a 4-inch cylinder is common on most traveling axle trailers, models with a 5-inch cylinder provide 56% more push force to maximize axle operation.

Additionally, consider a 4-beam frame design that uses 4-inch I-beam crossmembers to increase longevity and versatility with mixed loads of smaller equipment. This design offers better deflection across the entire deck and a more even weight distribution compared to the commonly used perimeter frame which concentrates weight on only two outside beams.

# 5 - Winch

For loading dead equipment, containers or other immobile objects, a trailer with a 20,000-pound, directdrive planetary winch with 6-function remote system provides more efficiency. This type of winch offers up to twice the loading speed of a more traditional worm gear model. A remote with a range of 150 feet increases the viable working area, allowing operators to choose the safest vantage point for loading and unloading. #6 – Additional Features

Finally, consider any extras such as the number and size of toolboxes. For towing and recovery operations, having easy access to all the necessary tools is important for getting the job done safely and efficiently. Some manufacturers offer traveling axle trailers with an additional curbside toolbox with a chain rack for safe, convenient access away from oncoming traffic. And for construction and rental houses looking for a safe option for side-by-side loading of smaller equipment, such as skid steers, some trailers feature double keyhole tie-down slots on top of the outside beams and recessed in the center of the main deck.

Making the Right Choice

There’s a lot riding on your trailer decision. Selecting a traveling axle unit that maximizes safety and loading efficiency can be a complicated process. Working with reputable dealers and manufacturers can help you determine which features will best meet your operation’s hauling goals.

Except for the lowboy, with which I had pulled the D-6 down Black Mountain, all my early trucking years were spent hooked to 40’ or 45’ closed vans, and by my 18th birthday, I could back these vans into tighter places better than most professional drivers.

inventory, so I was relegated to pulling flatbeds, lowboys, or stretch (extendable) trailers. Several flatbeds were equipped with side racks and tarps, when something needed either protection from the rain, or when it was necessary to keep the contents out of sight.

This was possible because of the lack of room in the yard of our furniture warehouse. I had to get “good at it” or my dad wouldn’t have let me move the trailers in and out of the truck dock. I learned that practice does make perfect, and all that practice certainly did help several years later as I delivered furniture in the tight confines of Chicago and Detroit.

There were no closed vans in our battalion’s equipment

My first flatbed life lesson was delivered by an Army colonel on my first trip to Danang. Before I loaded my return load back north to our Camp Haines, (adjacent to the Army’s Camp Evans), I was instructed to haul several pieces of flat steel plates to a fabrication building a short distance across the base. As it was just a very short distance, and also because I would be driving very slowly, I did not chain down the plates. (You can guess where this is going, can’t you?)

Within sight of my destination, I turned right at an intersection, but the steel plates continued going straight. The steel plates landed in the roadway, just barely missing a Jeep carrying the Colonel and his driver, and the look on the Colonel’s face made me feel like Beetle Bailey ready to catch hell from Sarge!

I climbed out of my tractor, came to attention, saluted the Colonel, and began making my apologies. The Colonel must not have had important business elsewhere, because he stayed on the scene, while his driver took me to find a forklift, so I could reload the steel plates back onto my trailer. When I loaded the plates, the Colonel taught me HIS proper way of securing steel plates for transport. Although I hadn’t used them, I do remember the flatbed being equipped with many chains and binders, even though two chains would have sufficiently held the few steel plates. The Colonel made me put every single chain and binder on the plates. When I was finished, he told me, “It’s a damned miracle you didn’t kill us, and maybe next time you will think twice about not chaining your load.” It was an “awfully” good lesson, and I’m pretty sure my life might have turned out differently if I had flattened the Colonel and his driver.

Sorry to get off-track for a minute, but I’m not the only person who had to learn a

lesson the hard way. In the early 1990s, I brokered a load of used corrugated cardboard cutting knives to a large flatbed carrier based in Alabama. The carrier dispatched the load to one of its owner operators, who picked-up the two knives in Ohio on Thursday and delivery was scheduled for 0800 the following morning in Arkansas.

The driver arrived at his destination around dawn the next morning, removed his tarps, chains, and binders, and was ready to be unloaded when the company opened at 0800. When the receiving clerk arrived at 0700, he informed the driver that the knives had to be unloaded at the rear of the building. As the driver climbed into his tractor to drive around to the back, the receiver walked-up to the cab and he informed the driver of a slight incline on the side of the building. He recommended that the driver throw a couple of chains back on the machinery.

The driver replied, “I’ve hauled more machinery in my years than you can imagine, and I know what I’m doing!” Well, upon reaching the slight incline, both pieces of machinery quickly became scrap steel when they fell off the trailer and hit the ground.

To this day, I still remember being impressed with the professionalism and promptness of the carrier’s handling of the claim. Within just one week, the customer had secured two more used knives, and a week later, the carrier had issued the customer a check for $70,000. Wonder if the driver learned his lesson?

Anyway, back to trucking in South Vietnam. Each week, I made two or three

roundtrips from our camp to the supply depots in Danang, hauling food, grease and lubricants, flat and structural steel (well chained), culverts, cement, and by far the most important load I hauled about once every two weeks was a load of palletized, double-stacked beer. It really wasn’t necessary to tarp the beer, since the beer sat outside in the sun at the beer yard in Danang, but during my first beer load, I realized the absolute need for tarps. While hauling my first beer load, I was slowly traveling through a hamlet when I noticed an approaching Army truck blinking his lights and pointing above my truck. I didn’t see anything as I looked into the sky, but the rear-view side mirrors revealed several little Vietnamese boys on top of the trailer. They were throwing cans of beer, as fast as they could, to their friends running behind the trailer. I stopped quickly and the boys skedaddled. When I climbed up on the load, I noticed half a dozen cases missing from a pallet. The boys had worked quickly as they threw onebeer-at-a-time. Practice must have also helped them become very proficient beer stealers.

I don’t know from where the boys came, or how they climbed back on the trailer without me seeing them, but it didn’t take but a few minutes before I saw beer flying off the trailer once again. Not being able to quickly pull-over, I pulled my Colt 45 out of its holster, pointed it toward an unattended rice paddy, and fired-off several rounds. The kids must have thought I was shooting at them, as that did the trick, and I watched them hightail it out of sight! I set up the side boards and tarped all future beer loads to hide the beer, thereby removing the temptation to these little entrepreneurs. (It just so happened that the icecold beer in the sand at the convoy points were the same brands of beer I hauled. Coincidence, you think)? SP
