Air Dryer Systems: Troubleshooting And Maintenance With commercial vehicle technology advancing and expanding the use of air for non-braking functions, the experts at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC stress the importance of protecting air systems from contamination to ensure longevity and performance. As part of its Bendix Tech Tips series, Bendix offers preventive maintenance and troubleshooting insight on air dryer systems and some of their key components. “Systems that can be impacted by excessive oil or moist air – from the air brakes to the engine, emission, and drivetrain systems – are susceptible to failure when that air is contaminated,” said Rick Conklin, Bendix Product Line Director, Air Treatment. “These systems often include technologies that improve productivity and fuel economy, or that are required to meet emissions regulations. Protecting them is important to keep vehicles on the road, increase their service cycles,

and reduce maintenance costs.” An overall air dryer system check should begin with opening the drain valves on the reservoirs to check for moisture in the system. If moisture is present, verify that no external air has been applied to the system, and check the air dryer’s service data sheet to confirm that the air dryer is mounted in the correct location with the correct discharge line length. If external air was applied, drain all reservoirs and purge tanks, restart the vehicle, and allow system pressure to build to the governor cutout pressure. Verify that the proper system pressure has been reached, then operate the vehicle normally. Recheck for water in the reservoirs after one week. If an issue with the air dryer mounting or plumbing is encountered, have it corrected, and ensure that the discharge line from the compressor to the air dryer

slopes continuously downward to the air dryer inlet, with no water traps. Also remember to take into account any significant temperature changes within the previous 24 hours. Ambient temperature shifts of greater than 30 degrees Fahrenheit can cause a temporary accumulation of moisture. If a significant temperature change occurred, continue to operate the vehicle under normal conditions. The small amount of water that may have condensed due to the temperature shift will be reabsorbed by the dry air once the vehicle is in operation. Check the air system again after one week. Whether moisture is present in the system or not, check all the air lines for damage such as chafing, and examine the air dryer mounting bolts for tightness and torque as specified in the manufacturer’s service data sheet. Within the air dryer system, there are three key

Page T-3

components to monitor: the air dryer cartridge, the purge valve, and the delivery check valve. Air Dryer Cartridge Maintenance – Easy as 1-2-3 Depending on vocation, Bendix recommends a one-, two-, or three-year air dryer cartridge replacement on vehicles equipped with a Bendix compressor. • One year or 100,000 miles: Severe service applications such as residential refuse trucks or school buses; • Two years or 200,000

miles: Pickup and delivery operations; doubleand tripletrailer line haul trucks; • Three years or 300,000 miles: Line haul operations using a single trailer. Recommended intervals for trucks equipped with non-Bendix compressors are six months (50,000 miles), one year (100,000 miles), and two years (200,000 miles), respectively. More frequent intervals may be required depending on a vehicle’s age, compressor condition, and op-

erating environment. For better air dryer performance and increased system protection, Bendix recommends using an oilcoalescing cartridge like the Bendix PuraGuard. Oil can be particularly harmful to air systems, deteriorating seals – which can cause leaks – and contributing to premature damage in a variety of other components such as push-pull dash valves, spring brake modulating valves, and brake chamber diaphragms. may be replaced with oil-coalescing cartridges, but fleets should always change out oil-coalescing cartridges with like replacements. Additionally, fleets need to beware of low-cost and counterfeit cartridges, which are not as effective as OEM equipment. Purge Valve Issues and Replacement As a best practice in preventive maintenance, Bendix recommends replacing the purge valve assembly whenever the air dryer cartridge is replaced. This will address several potential purge valve issues, including: • Air leakage or lack of pressure building due to purge valve seal wear;

• •Popping” of the purge valve due to intermittent sticking; • Loss of engine turbocharger boost during the purge cycle due to leakage in the turbo cutoff valve. Delivery Check Valve Issues and Replacement Signs that the system’s delivery check valve is in need of replacement include a lack of pressure buildup due to the valve sticking in the closed position, and rapid cycling or loss of pressure during the purge cycle caused by a leaky valve. Bendix recommends replacing the air dryer system’s delivery check valve with every other cartridge replacement.

The Perfect Way to Finance a Trucking Company By Tom Klausen Financing a business can be a complicated affair but if you are in the transportation business it’s more straightforward. On one hand you have large pieces of equipment which you can lease and on the other you have bills of lading which you can factor. In between you take care of the variable expenses with cashflow and build working capital through supplier credit and retained earnings. Of course it’s not that simple; competition is fierce, fuel is expensive, good drivers are hard to find and any number of things can go wrong in a given day. New companies appear and disappear with regularity and those who fail to adapt simply leave quickly. It’s a challenging and constantly changing industry. Banks long ago figured out that the industry was high risk if they followed their normal lending practices. Today if a company in the transportation industry does not have a healthy balance sheet with plenty of collateral a bank will not even consider taking an application. On an ongoing basis they closely scrutinize and carefully monitor all their transportation clients. As a result, today you will find entire industries of specialized finance companies that do nothing but focus on the transportation industry. These lenders are industry experienced and they understand the risks. They also need to charge more to cover the higher maintenance and risks involved and because in most cases their funds

come from a bank. Factoring has been a common source of working capital finance for many years. It doesn’t have the same negative connotation in the transportation industry than it might have in other industries. Some feel like it’s a last resort but for those who know something about business finance, Factoring is simply the perfect way for a smaller, newer or growing transport company to finance itself. Applying for a Factoring relationship is a fairly straightforward process. Paperwork must be in good order, taxes must be up to date and ownership must be capable and committed. The completeness of the information is more important to a Factor than the details. It usually takes only a couple of weeks to go through the whole process. Because Factoring is so common in the transportation industry the issue of customer notification is not a big one when it’s done right. Customers who complain or refuse factored invoices are usually the same ones who pay their invoice poorly. It simply makes sense for a growing, busy company with minimal full time staff to outsource the management of their Accounts Receivable. A Factor is far more flexible in dealing with the challenges that will invari-

ably happen as a business goes through its growing pains. A proper factoring relationship is one where both parties succeed if the business succeeds. Factoring services also reduce risk and save the company both time and money. What could be better than a “non-equity partnership” where both parties contribute? Good communication is the most vital ingredient of a successful factoring relationship. A typical one will last somewhere between 6 and 24 months. Take the time to find a Factor who also takes the time to get to know you. Beware of the ones who offer you a quick and easy application process without commitments or a contract. Remember that you are choosing a financial partner who is in direct contact with your customers. You only want to work with a Factor who takes the time to understand your needs, walks you through the application process, outlines the process and provides a Proposal that includes everything. What could be more straightforward than that? b Tom Klausen is a Senior VP with First Vancouver Finance (www.FVF.ca) which provides full service factoring to small businesses across Canada. He has been involved in the factoring industry for over 20 years and has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia. He also consults with lenders and businesses throughout the US. If you would like to reach out to Tom for any reason he can be reached directly at 604-988-1490 or TKlausen@fvf.ca

From Oil Patch To Over-The-Road, B&R Eckel’s Succeeds With Diverse Fleet Of Kenworth Trucks “Walter” is its name, and it’s a behemoth of a truck. A 1978 Kenworth 953 — a six-wheel drive conventional capable of hauling loads in excess of 160,000 pounds. It’s a truck with more than 2 million miles under the hood; a truck that still moves oil rigs over the most treacherous off-road terrain the folks at B&R

Eckel’s Transport can throw its way. “And it symbolizes why we run Kenworths,” said Darren Smith, Fleet Manager for the Bonnyville, Albertabased trucking company. “Kenworths are tough. They’re durable, and at the end of their cycle with us, they can command a high resale value

in excess of 20 percent more than a comparably spec’d truck.” Arguably one of the most diverse trucking businesses in Canada, B&R Eckel’s is a privately held company that was founded in 1965 by Victor Ringuette, who still heads the company nearly 50 years later. Today, 55 percent of its loads are des-

tined for oil fields, while 45 percent are general freight. It operates 360 Class 6-8 tractors and has more than 1,100 pieces of additional equipment – including lowboys, flat decks, reefers and dry vans, and specialized oilfield hauling equipment. Kenworth Vocational Trucks For the oil patch, mostly in Alberta and Saskatchewan, the company utilizes a mix of big and ultra-big tractors. The majority is Kenworth equipment including the C500. Many of the C500s are configured with 40,000-lb tandem steer axles. Others feature tri-drive axles, powered by 550 hp engines, driven through 18-speed transmissions. “The C500 is our staple heavy rig mover, and it joins Walter in moving the biggest loads,” said Smith. “They’re flatbed units with dual winches to haul aboard the oil rig drilling platforms. To support those trucks we run a lot of Kenworth T800s and use them as picker trucks, or as winch tractors. “Going forward, we’ve seen the new Kenworth T880s, and we’re fired up

February 2013 about putting those into our operation as well,” said Smith. “It has the same bloodline as the T800, so we know it’s a tough truck that can be spec’d the way we want it. The comfort of that truck is really something. The reaction from our first driver of that rig was, ‘wow, this is like driving a big car. It doesn’t feel like a truck at all.’ ” Kenworth Over-The-Road Trucks For the over-the-road fleet, Smith said the company has possible plans to standardize with the new Kenworth T680, which have been in operation as day cabs for the company in regional operations. The Kenworth T680 day cab is already proving itself in regional operations. “In initial comments from our frontline operators we are extremely happy with the new model,” Smith said. “The T680 day cab is equipped with a PACCAR MX13 engine, rated at 500 horsepower, and our drivers are saying the engine pulls well — and has better overall power as compared to some of the other engines we run.”

B&R Eckel’s was also the first in Canada to take delivery of the new Kenworth T680 52-inch sleeper. “We’re using that model for longer haul runs and anticipate it may become our flagship truck,” said Smith. “But, the proof will be in the pudding – we capture all the data in life cycle costs from maintenance to fuel economy to resale value. But we visualize that this truck could be our truck of choice. Everyone builds a good truck, but that being said, Kenworth seems to fit the bill for us in every way. The visibility, the comfort, the quietness of the truck is unmatched.” For its over–the-road fleet, B&R Eckel’s has a trade cycle of 4.5 to 5.0 years, or 700,000 to 750,000 kilometers. “One of the biggest keys in measuring life cycle costs of equipment is resale value,” said Smith. “And what we’ve seen with Kenworth, and what I’ve always known being involved in the industry for over 27 years, is that Kenworth commands a premium. We often get in excess of a 20 percent preContinued on page T-7

BCTA Announces New International Trucking Reference For Motor Carriers Hiring Immigrant Drivers The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) recently released the International Trucking Reference: Roads, Rules, and Drivers, a guide to the truck driving environment in 10 countries to help motor carriers understand how the skills and experience of an immigrant driver might translate to a professional career in BC. BCTA developed the International Trucking Reference with input from motor carriers about the type of information they need to make hiring decisions about job candidates who have gained the bulk of their commercial driving experience outside Canada. Included are pointers on the reasons for recruiting drivers from the immigrant labour pool, tips for finding and recruiting immigrant candidates, and considerations for successfully interviewing candidates from another culture. The Reference is a human resources tool for industry employers facing a huge driver shortage, which the Conference

Board of Canada has projected will see up to 33,000 empty seats by 2020. As one of two BCTA projects made possible by the Immigrant Employment Council of BC (IEC-BC) and funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of BC, the International Trucking Reference will help address immigrant talent hiring and retention challenges faced by BC employers. “Given that most BC trucking companies are small to mid-sized, they may not have the staff to research the background of a job applicant with foreign experience. BCTA is pleased that funding from the federal and provincial governments has allowed us to create the International Trucking Reference, a dependable, easy-touse resource that will save employers time and help them make better-informed hiring decisions,” said Louise Yako, BCTA President & CEO. The International Trucking Reference was authored by Ottawa-based

Graybridge Malkalm, a training and consulting firm specializing in organizational diversity. BCTA carriers recommended a “top 10” list of countries to include in the guide: India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom. The Reference provides an accurate profile of the driving environment in each country, including a description of the terrain and climate, commercial vehicle types, typical driver responsibilities, licensing and training standards, infrastructure, and regulations, among others. “Immigrants who call BC home bring a wealth of talent to our province – talent that employers can tap into as long as they know how to recognize the skills and experience. BCTA’s project will help employers understand the working environments of qualified professional drivers who have immigrated from oth-

er countries, and give them confidence they are hiring people with the skills their companies – and our economy – need,” said Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Responsible for Labour, Shirley Bond. The International Trucking Reference complements BCTA’s IDRIVE – the Immigrant Driver Readiness – Industry Validation and Engagement project, which BCTA is piloting now. IDRIVE participants complete four tests, including a road test, to assess their experience and readiness for work in BC. With an immigrant candidate’s IDRIVE report in hand and details from the country profiles in the International Trucking Reference, BC employers can take on new drivers with greater confidence in their ability to operate on North American roads. The International Trucking Reference: Roads, Rules, and Drivers is available to industry employers on BCTA’s website at www. bctrucking.com/careers. More information about IDRIVE is also available on the landing page. The Asia Pacific Gateway Skills Table is managing both projects on BCTA’s behalf. b

mium on the Kenworth equipment we sell over any other brand.” Kenworth Medium Duty Trucks For local deliveries, Smith said the company utilizes Kenworth T370s. “These are equipped with van bodies and are used for pickup and delivery,” he said. “They’re working beautifully.” Committed to Service According to Smith, B&R Eckel’s is putting more equipment to work. “In the past three years, we’ve grown 20 percent and expect that trend to continue,” he said. “Like most trucking companies, we’ve had our share of hard times, but we’re growing again and much of it has to do with our

company’s mantra that Victor and our employees live by: ‘Committed to Service.’ It’s something we truly believe in and we live and breathe that every day. It’s from the top all the way down and one reason I feel that our drivers and other employees stay with us. We have many drivers that have been with us for 20-plus years.” Smith said B&R Eckel’s not only delivers quality service, but looks for it as well. “We certainly do, and we’ve been very pleased with the dealer support we’ve been given through Edmonton Kenworth and Kenworth Lloydminster. We feel they’re second to none, and they help us keep our wheels turning.” b

Daimler Recognized For Outstanding Environmental Efforts The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) recently recognized the Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) plant in Cleveland as an Environmental Steward. The award recognizes DTNA’s superior environmental performance, commitment to continued reduction of its environmental impact, and demonstrated commitment to exceed compliance. The facility joins only 16 other commercial facilities in the state to have achieved this recognition. “Daimler Trucks North America demonstrates what it means to be a successful business with a strong environmental ethic,” said John Skvarla, secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources. “By achieving significant reductions in waste generation and energy usage, the North Carolina facility has shown that the demands of a growing business can

go hand-in-hand with environmental protection.” Using the company’s continuous improvement program, DTNA employee teams who are located at the plant identified the best options for reducing waste and recycling each material, whether reusing cartons for shipping, reclaiming solvent, working with supplier partners to reduce packaging, or turning waste into energy. “This achievement required a commitment by each and every one of the employees here,” said Freightliner Environmental Engineer Heather Callahan. “Everything received or produced by the company is used, reused, recycled, or sold, and nothing is sent to a landfill. Today, the facility joins an elite group of landfill-free manufacturing facilities in the United States and is one of five DTNA facilities to do so.” The title of Environmental Steward is the highest honor of NCDENR’s Environmental Stewardship

Initiative (ESI) based on a decision by its 10-member advisory board which recommended the recognition of the Daimler Trucks North America’s Cleveland Truck Plant. Advisory board membership consists of individuals from industry, trade groups, environmental and citizen nongovernmental organizations, government, academia and small business. Reasons cited by the advisory board in its recognition of the facility include: • Its compliance history and commitment to continual improvement including a mature ISO 14001 environmental management system that has been certified by a third party since 2004; • The facility’s commitment to continue to reduce waste by setting, and achieving a zero waste-to-landfill goal; • The facility’s elimination of hazardous wastewater sludge due to material substitution; and • The facility’s commit-

in High Point, N.C. was the first bus company to achieve the recognition, and in 2009, its Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation plant in Gaffney, S.C. was the first chassis plant to achieve the status. This latest achievement by DTNA is one of many initiatives through which the company is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability. With sustainability as one of the company’s business priorities, its mission is to conserve resources, reduce all types of emissions, and promote economic growth while ensuring safe, efficient transportation options. DTNA environmental engineering representatives are scheduled to participate in the Zero Waste to Landfill conference, an off-shoot of the Carolina Recycling Association Conference to be held March 31 through April 3, 2014.. The Cleveland facility represents DTNA’s largest manufacturing plant in North America. There, the company produces Class 8 Freightliner trucks, including the Freightliner Cascadia. The facility was established in 1989.

Launched in 2002, the Environmental Stewardship Initiative is designed to promote and encourage superior environmental performance by North Carolina’s regulated community. It provides technical assistance and networking opportunities to stimulate the development and implementation of programs that use pollution prevention and innovative approaches to meet and go beyond regulatory requirements. This program seeks to reduce the impact on the environment beyond measures required by any permit or rule, producing a better environment, conserving natural resources and resulting in long-term economic benefits. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources administers regulatory programs designed to protect air quality, water quality, and the public’s health. The organization also offers technical assistance to businesses, farmers, local governments, and the public and encourages responsible behavior with respect to the environment through education programs. b

ment to energy conservation, with a 43% reduction over 2008 numbers. These gains are due to lighting changes, window replacements, and installing occupancy sensors, as well as the solar array on site. ”Daimler Trucks North America has an ongoing commitment to a holistic approach to achieving a sustainable future,” said Sandra Carter, environmental engineering manager, Daimler Trucks North America. “As a pioneer in environmental technologies and manufacturing processes, we reach beyond standard requirements whenever possible to lead the way for the industry.” The Zero-Waste-toLandfill goal was initiated to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing facilities under the DTNA umbrella. The Cleveland plant is one of five DTNA facilities to be recognized for achieving the ZeroWaste-to-Landfill status. Its parts plant in Gastonia, N.C. and its truck plant in Mt. Holly, N.C. also accomplished the achievement this year. In 2011, DTNA’s Thomas Built Buses plant

Development Truck Restoration It’s taken nearly a year to transform the weathered development truck that was parked in a courtyard for years into a pristine show truck. The restoration of D001, the first development truck between Cummins and Chrysler, was revealed at the TDR Rally this past June. D001 was part of the initial fleet of six vehicles that were built to test the viability of a Cummins in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine in a Dodge Ram pickup. The name D001 originates from the 1980s, when Cummins identified test trucks by the letter D, for “Development”, and a three-digit number – 001, in this case. The process to restore D001 started under the hood, with a mechanical 12-valve 5.9-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel with a Bosch VE rotary pump. When the Cummins restoration team first met, the truck hadn’t been start-

ed in over five years. Of course, after that amount of time, the battery was dead. A new battery was installed, and with a tank of 5-year-old diesel fuel, the truck fired on command – true to form for a Gen 1. They fire almost instantaneously, and have an idle sound like no other diesel engine in the industry. The original rating for the truck was 160 hp and 400 lb-ft – less than half of the MY2013.5 high-output 385 hp and 850 lb-ft rating. After listening to the truck run and eventually driving it, the decision was made to not touch the internals of the engine. New accessories were installed: a starter, alternator, pulleys and belts. To restore the body and interior, countless hours were spent breaking the truck down to the frame, which was then sandblasted, primed and painted. From there, the suspension and rear-end

went in. Next came the steering components, and then the engine and transmission were dropped into the frame. While that work was under way, the cab and bed were being restored to mint condition. As the project progressed, the cab was placed on the completed chassis, and the dash, heating and cooling components were hooked up. The interior was completely restored – all-new carpet, seats and headliner were installed. Next, the repainted front fenders, hood, grille, bed and bumpers were bolted on. Finally, all the glass and trim pieces were added. It sounds simple enough, but if you’ve restored a vehicle, then you know how many hours are spent on the details. Cummins and Chrysler can be very proud of the care that went into the restoration and the respect given to this important artifact. This truck was the genesis of the Cummins-Ram partnership that has sold over 2 million Cummins Turbo Diesels and counting. b

Ferrari Chooses Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires On Its 458 Speciale The simultaneous codevelopment of the tire and car, using both simulated and track tests, led to very high levels of performance in three specific areas that were identified prior to the start of the project: faster dry lap times, consistent performance lap after lap and optimal grip on wet roads. In short, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire is an integral part of the new Ferrari 458 Speciale and a key component in giving it its exceptional performance. The tread compound Produced with the same tools used to manufacture race tires, the tread compound of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire integrates Bi-Compound technology. The outer rubber has been specially designed to deliver outstanding dry grip on curves, especially in tight corners, while the inner part of the tread uses rubber made with a more rigid elastomer to ensure

precise steering. An aramid fibre belt The main feature of the belt made with aramid, a high-density fibre, is its heightened tensile strength. This composite is both light and highly resistant; in fact, it is five times stronger than steel at an equivalent weight. The tire’s footprint remains constant as centrifugal growth of the tire is effectively controlled, even at very high speeds. The Track Variable Contact Patch 3.0 This innovation optimizes pressure in the tire’s contact patch so that a constant and optimum amount of rubber is always in contact with the track, thereby ensuring superior grip in both long and fast, and tight corners. A new bead area The bead area is 10 per cent wider than that of a traditional sports tire. It is strengthened with a high modulus rubber compound that increases the tire’s lateral stiffness and

delivers sporty responsiveness as well as precise steering. Velvet sidewalls for clearer markings The Michelin Velvet Technology creates contrast on certain sections of the outer sidewall using micro-geometry techniques that absorb light. The geometry of the texture thus generated allows technicians to vary the contrast and create shades of black that have the look of velvet and make the sidewall markings much more visible. The very high performance levels of the new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire are made possible due to the considerable resources that Michelin invests in its research and development activities – around c600 million per year. This means that the Group’s products do not only perform in one or two specific areas, but in all areas and this is what is known as Michelin Total Performance’. Feds Finalize Regulation For Boat Tails In Canada Full length boat tails on Canadian trucks are one step closer to becoming a reality. Currently, there are no full length boat tails operating on Canadian highways. The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), expects this to change as a result of a published regulation change to Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 223 (CMVSS 223). The changes will allow for greater variety of “boat tail” designs to be used by trucking companies once the provincial regulations are updated.

Boat tails are devices installed on the rear of trailers that reduce aerodynamic drag, thereby reducing GHG emissions from heavy commercial trucks that adopt the technology. Prior to the change by Transport Canada, the regulations severely restricted the ability for provinces to address boat tails in their own regulations and thereby the ability for trucking companies to deploy the use of this technology. Boat tails are in wide spread use in the United States and this change sets the stage for the use of

this technology on a North American scale. The revisions to the standard were championed by the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA), its provincial association partners, as well as the provincial and territorial governments that participated on the Task Force on Vehicle Weights and Dimensions. The next important step in the process will be for all provincial associations to work with their government partners to bring about regulatory changes to allow the widespread adoption of this technology. CTA will continue to work with Transport Canada to ensure boat tails designed to the new Canadian standard receive reciprocal recognition in the United States. b

MACK Twin Y Air Suspension Wins Prize The MACK Twin Y Air Suspension won the 2013 Swedish Steel Prize, an annual award recognizing the world’s most innovative design utilizing highstrength steel. The award was given by SSAB, the global expert in high-strength steel, during an event Nov. 21 in Stockholm, Sweden. Mack Trucks was one of four finalists for the award. “Mack Trucks demonstrates how innovative and skilled development can help us to take advantage of high-strength steel to make stronger, lighter, and more sustainable products, which is one aspect of what the prize is intended for,” said Melker Jernberg, Chairman of the Swedish Steel Prize jury and head of the EMEA business area within SSAB. The Mack Twin Y air suspension is the trucking industry’s first suspension to utilize high-strength

steel in a unique Y-shaped design. The strong, yet lightweight design greatly reduces suspension windup and significantly improves tire traction and braking control. “It’s an honor for Mack Trucks and the Mack Twin Y Air Suspension to be recognized for innovation in a global competition,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “As a trucking industry leader, it’s gratifying for Mack to continue to move the industry forward, being always mindful of delivering unmatched performance, fuel efficiency and comfort for Mack customers.” Mack will donate the 10,000 euros ($13,400) SSAB awarded to Mack for winning the Swedish Steel Prize to the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit that empowers wounded service members in the United States, raising pub-

t

lic awareness and providing unique, direct programs to meet the needs of injured servicemen and women. As an American manufacturer and brand, Mack Trucks has long been a supporter of the U.S. military dating back to World War I when Mack first became a supplier to the U.S. and other Allied forces. “When we introduced the Twin Y suspension, we knew that it would be of great value to our customers and could change how the trucking industry designs suspensions, but didn’t anticipate recognition on this scale,” Walsh said. The Twin Y Air Suspension was introduced in January 2013. It utilizes two stamped high-strength steel Y-shaped blades at each wheel end. Along with improved tire traction and braking control, the suspension also offers a more stable ride, better handling

and gains in fuel efficiency. Because of the greater flexibility of the steel and the reduced torque reactivity and lighter weight design of the Twin Y, truck components last longer and tire life is extended. Available on the MACK Pinnacle Axle Back and Axle Forward models, the Twin Y is paired with the MACK S38 and S40 series axles and C125/126 and C150/151 carriers ensuring that all components are designed to seamlessly work together. The load of the suspension is completely on the air ride and not on the pivot bushing, which is another design feature that makes the Twin Y a smoother, more comfortable alternative to traditional suspensions. “At Mack, we pride ourselves on building innovation into each of our trucks that enhances the experience of our customers,” said Greg Kiselis, Mack Trucks Principal Engineer. “To be recognized by SSAB as a world leader in the use of a material like high-strength steel, helps us know that we are driving product development in the right direction for the trucking industry.” b

Michelin Latitude Cross S3 Masters Welsh Forests Wales Rally GB, the final round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship, lived up to its reputation as one of the most complex events of the season. The mud and extremely slippery Welsh forest tracks proved a grueling test for the drivers, but the soft-compound Michelin Latitude Cross S3 tire enabled them to produce some outstanding performances and put on an exciting show for spectators. This is an event that traditionally throws rain, wind,

fog and sometimes even snow at competitors, but this year’s weather conditions proved less delicate than expected. Even so, the sky remained threatening and the temperatures were chilly throughout, and the absence of rain had a direct influence on team strategies since the crews had to contend with big differences in the amount of grip they encountered compared to what they had come across during their rainy recce earlier in the week. More difficult still was the thin layer

of mud that coated the rocky base and made it as slippery as if it were covered in a layer of wet moss. Despite these unpredictable and constantly shifting conditions, the crews were able to count on the consistency, performance and grip of their Michelin Latitude Cross S3 tires. Sébastien Ogier (winner, Volkswagen Motorsport) said, “There really wasn’t much grip on the stages, and the little grip that was available was inconsistent.

Alberta Youth Link Up With The Trucking Industry About 20 young adults spent the day exploring careers in the trucking industry by visiting one of the country’s award winning trucking companies where they toured the facility, talked to staffers about their jobs and took a turn at the wheel of a truck driving simulator. The one-day snapshot look at the trucking industry was made possible thanks to AMTA and Bison Transport (Calgary). The program, under whose auspices the activity was delivered is called Linking

Up, a pilot project of the Van Horne Institute. The purpose of Linking Up is to interest young adults in supply chain careers. AMTA worked closely with Bison Transport to deliver a first-rate day that featured several talks from Bison staff, including interesting presentations by senior company executives and managers through to dispatchers, drivers and safety counsellors. The day kicked off with participants arriving by bus at Bison’s Calgary facility

where they were greeted by AMTA and Bison representatives and welcomed to the company’s training classroom. They then received several presentations about topics that included a look at the vital role the trucking industry plays in the economy and about sustainability in trucking (and at Bison). Next up, AMTA Road Knight Reg Moulding (Bison Transport) provided an overview of the wide range of careers available

The first passes proved very delicate because of all the slippery mud on the driving line. You just had to choose a line and stay on it if you wanted to post a competitive time. The second passes were even more of a challenge. After the cars had been through once, the hardpacked roads became incredibly slippery in places where the stony base was now covered in a film of packed dirt. Thankfully, our Michelin tires were perfectly suited to the situation and delivered the necessary grip and responsiveness to permit some fast times and I was always able to push that little bit harder whenever I wanted to. This year’s Wales Rally GB was all about knowing where to in trucking both behind the wheel and behind the scenes. Moulding was followed by a Bison dispatch supervisor who spoke about his career path and job at Bob. After lunch the group received a guided facility tour and wrapped up the day with time behind the wheel of a truck driving simulator. “I like that the participants were exposed to different professions surrounding the industry, and that they were able to actually touch a truck and practice driving one. There are a few participants who are interested in trucking, and left the visit inspired,” said Kathryn Semcow, Linking Up Project Consultant, with the Van Horne Institute. b

Page T-15 lift just enough not to go off the road for good.” The world champion’s words were echoed by those of Jacques Morelli, Manager of Michelin’s rally programs, who said, “I would obviously like to congratulate Sébastien Ogier on his brilliant performance which brings an exceptional season for him and our partner Volkswagen Motorsport to a successful end. I would also like to underline the job done by the Michelin Latitude Cross S3 tire and how well it stood up to the punishment that this year’s Wales Rally GB threw at it. Add water and mud to the

stone- and slate-covered stages and you get a particularly aggressive mix, and it was important to protect against the risk of sharp rocks slashing the tires. At the end of the day, though, our partners didn’t suffer any punctures whatsoever. I believe that speaks volumes for the hard work put in by Michelin’s developers ahead of the 2013 season. The regulations for this year were very demanding because of the lower tire quotas per event, yet all our solutions rose to their mission to provide our partners with an exceptionally high level of overall performance.” b
