Choosing A Trucking Company:

Hiring Operators And Truck World 2014 Evaluation I attended the 2014 truck world in Toronto last month. I met hundreds of operators, many of whom have read my articles. It was a great honor and pleasure meeting those who came out. While I was there I performed an informal survey and found some interesting trends amongst the respondents. I met and introduced myself to about 1050 operators (that’s how many cd’s I handed out). If I had the time I also asked what age of truck they owned. Most operators were very polite and co-operative. Here are some of the results. • 75-80% of operators drive pre-emission trucks. • about 35-40% drove 2003-2007 and the rest 2002 or earlier. • I had one 1985, two 1990 and about fifteen 19941999.

• a whole bunch of 20002001. • FYI, about 15-20% wore Duck Dynasty paraphernalia (happy, happy, happy). While I was there I had several longer conversations with operators. They expressed concern about the future of their older trucks. Even though they were very happy with its performance they were more concerned about trucking company policies on equipment age. If they had a ten year old truck, where could they put it? Which companies would hire trucks that old? That’s a fair question! It’s an answer that many will be asking for both now and in the future. It’s a management policy decision that will have to be visited and revisited possibly for years to come. For those that had

t

trucks 2008+ most were very new (still under warranty). When asked about how their emission maintenance was going they were split about 50-50, half were not worried about their future because they had no maintenance problems… “yet” (with a grin and a knock on wood), while others were clearly concerned because there was a day coming where they would start having to pay the bills. Operators, without a doubt, did not trust the emissions maintenance. There were many with very serious animosity…. passionate about the intrusion into their business. I also met a lot of ex-operators who openly claimed they would “never do that again”. For those who explained why, they mostly blamed maintenance and fuel surcharge (fuel cost is-

sues). They may not all be able to pin-point the exact problems in the industry but they all expressed the same shotgun diagnosis… too many problems, not enough cash. Operators (present or prior) are not dumb… at least not most of them. The current operator equipment demographics show one thing… operators didn’t trust the new equipment, and therefore didn’t buy it. They kept their old trucks and just re-built, rebuilt, re-built. If hindsight brings any value to the debate, they may have been a lot smarter than others who took claims at face value. However, virtually all of them (90%+) are still worried about the future implications of emission maintenance. There is a very old saying. “A wise man sees danger and avoids it, a foolish man rushes on and suffers for it.” If ever that proverb can be applied, it would be to the operators in the last 15 years. As an accountant (exclusive to lease/owner operators) I have seen first-hand the lost savings, insolvencies, and bankruptcies that were Continued on page T-5

Power management company Eaton recently announced that an optimized version of its Fuller Advantage Series Automated 10-speed transmissions will be available on select PACCAR trucks with the MX-13 engine in order to maximize fuel efficiency in linehaul applications. This powertrain package is lighter in weight, provides professional drivers with smooth, automated shifting, and is designed to enhance the time spent in a diesel engine’s most efficient RPM zone to help reduce fuel consumption. “We are excited to partner with North American truck manufacturers to deliver integrated powertrain solutions,” said Tim Sinden, President – North American Truck Operations. “Providing our fleet customers with enhanced, optimized powertrain choices such as this one with PACCAR is what Eaton believes benefits the marketplace, and we are confident this new offering will be well received by professional drivers.” For PACCAR, the MX-13 engine will be paired with the new Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed transmission and available for Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks in long-haul and regional applications. By sensing the vehicle load and selecting the best shift points to match vehicle weight and road grade throttle position, this powertrain package can save up to 2 percent in fuel economy. “The transmission is very intuitive – the optimized performance gets the absolute most out of the truck when it comes to shifting and fuel economy,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth Marketing Director. A new Precision Lubrication system represents one of the most important upgrades in the Fuller Advantage Series. The system reduces the oil churn energy losses found in traditional transmissions by nearly 33 percent. With less heat being generated, the Fuller Advantage Series transmissions do not require a cooler and corresponding lines and fittings. The result is less preventative maintenance is re-

quired while engine fans cycle less, further reducing horsepower demand. In addition, smallstep technology enables downspeeding in overdrive and efficiency in direct drive. Optimized shifting is based on grade, vehicle weight, engine torque and throttle position. Significant weight savings – up to 82 pounds with no sacrifice to strength – has also been achieved with the new Fuller Advantage Series transmissions. A thin-wall cast-iron main case design is complemented by the strategic use of aluminum for the shift bar housing, auxiliary section cover and range cylinder. All Fuller Advantage Series transmissions have a standard warranty of 5-years/750,000 miles. The Advantage Series clutch is warranted for 3 years/350,000 miles (563,270 km). Extended protection plans are also available. Additional Fuller Advantage Series Automated features include: • Error-free, automated shifting due to the use of an Electronic Clutch Actuator (ECA) which offers unprecedented

performance, including gradeability and lowspeed maneuverability • Auto Neutral automatically switches into neutral once the parking brake is engaged to prevent potential movement • Hill Start Aid which prevents roll back or roll forward. When grade exceeds 3 percent, foundation brakes hold truck for up to three seconds for a controlled launch • Extended oil drain interval - 500,000 miles before the first scheduled transmission oil drain service, for linehaul applications rated at 80,000 lbs. or less. • Oil level sight glass for reduced preventative maintenance downtime • Standard eight- and sixbolt Power Take-Off (PTO) openings. • Ten forward speeds and two reverse. Capabilities: • Gross Combination Weight (GCW) ratings up to 80,000 lbs. (36,287 kg.); 110,000 lbs. (49895 kg.) pending. • Torque capacities from 1150 (1559 Nm) to 1,850 lb./ft. (2508Nm). All Eaton products are backed by the Roadranger network, which includes more than 200 drivetrain professionals throughout North America. For more information visit www.eaton.com/roadranger. b

the direct fault of emission maintenance. I do not have to inform operators of this… they already know… they have known for a long time. If companies want to entertain operators for the future, they will have to accommodate more than just paint. They will have to accept equipment age. If some don’t, their competition probably will. It’s an issue that will not go away for some time. My Fascination One of the most interesting features I found at Truck World was the hydrogen application. I have always been a proponent of hydrogen usage. However, my personal views are

Your Truck & Trailer Connection, Since 1971 tempered by three issues, the hydrogen technology is under-capitalized, undervalued and under-engineered. The science is astounding but the application has bad experiences, bad press and possibly some industry opposition. Under short term initial testing though, the system produces phenomenal results (low emissions and lower fuel consumption). What I believe is the most damaging however, is the test trucks at the side of the road with holes in their blocks (not a minor issue). However, it begs a question, if Orville and Wilbur Wright had crashed at Kitty Hawk NC… would we not still

Kenworth Features New T680 “Advantage” At Truck World Kenworth Truck Company displayed its new T680 Advantage in Canada during 2014 Truck World April 10-12 at the International Centre in Toronto. The Kenworth T680 Advantage – Kenworth’s new, most fuel-efficient truck – improves fuel economy up to 5 percent. The T680 Advantage features a special factory-installed aerodynamic package along with the optimized powertrain combination of the PACCAR MX-13 engine integrated with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission. Aerodynamic treatments for the T680 Advantage include longer side extenders for the T680 76-inch sleeper, lower cab fairing extenders, front air dam, aerodynamic mud flaps, rear fairing without steps coupled with an air deflector, exhaust cut out covers, and optional wheel covers for drive tires. Other fuel-efficient T680 Advantage specs are speed control management that utilizes speed limiters; a tire pressure monitoring system to keep tires at optimum PSI; and the new Kenworth Idle Management System, which eliminates the need to idle in order to run air conditioning. The T680 Advantage was introduced at the MidAmerica Trucking Show in late March.

have developed the airline industry? Failure is only the end for those who quit. I believe hydrogen will be a serious part of the transportation industry in the future, even if that means the engines are made entirely of ceramics. The advantages are too high, the alternatives too costly (as we have seen). Some brilliant trucker (or mechanic) will figure a way to overcome each of the many problems and make it consistently work, if not in all applications

than in enough to make a significant impact. These of course, are my personal views but I do know several operators who are testing their own systems on their own trucks. Never underestimate the power of a motivated independent person. Most all of life’s advancements came from a dusty garage. b Robert D Scheper operates an accounting and consulting firm in Steinbach, Manitoba. He has a Masters Degree in Business Admin-

Hendrickson Introduces OPTIMAAX Liftable Forward Tandem Axle Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems officials recently announced the introduction of OPTIMAAX, a revolutionary new liftable forward tandem axle system with automated controls. The OPTIMAAX system represents Hendrickson’s latest offering in the company’s 100 year history of advancing the commercial vehicle suspension industry through design innovation. Hendrickson’s OPTIMAAX system is a revolutionary 6×2 solution to help fleets save fuel cost, tire wear, and weight with comparable handling to 6×4 tandem axle configurations. Operating as a liftable axle in the forward tandem position, this system provides versatility for fleets with variable loads by using axle capacity only when required. In comparison with the traditional 6x4 tractor configuration, The OPTIMAAX system eliminates over 350 lbs. by replacing

the forward tandem drive axle and suspension with an integrated liftable nondrive axle and suspension which is automated with weight sensing controls. This proprietary, fully automated control module eliminates driver intervention and training and allows the tractor to adapt to the requirements of the load; raising the axle when the additional capacity is not needed and lowering the axle to distribute the load evenly when required. OPTIMAAX also provides load equalization between the tandem axles when in the lowered position to ensure compliance. Fleets and drivers can take comfort in the fact that the OPTIMAAX system achieves this flexibility while delivering the traction and handling drivers have come to expect. In addition to providing substantial weight savings, The OPTIMAAX system delivers superior cost of operation savings by im-

proving fuel economy by up to 5 percent through the elimination of the second drive axle and the lifting of the non-drive axle. Another added benefit is tire wear savings by utilizing the liftable axle only when load demands require the additional axle capacity. David McCleave, Director of Marketing for Hendrickson Truck Commercial Vehicle Systems says, “The OPTIMAAX system is the enabler for the OnHighway tractor 6x2 market segment. Lifting the forward tandem axle when loads don’t require the axle capacity eliminates rolling resistance and tire scrub providing the optimized solution to fuel and tire wear savings. With its weight, fuel, and tire savings combined with the elimination of driver intervention through the fully automated control module, OPTIMAAX is ideal for fleets in need of additional flexibility and operational cost savings for variable load on-highway tractor applications.” Available in 20,000 lb. capacity, OPTIMAAX will be available for OEM specification in North America the fall of 2014. b

PROFAB Manufacturing Ltd. 9366 Smiley Road, Chemainus, BC FAX: 250-416-0232 Since 1996

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company, the industry’s largest manufacturer of refrigerated trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, flatbeds, and Tautliner curtainsided trailers, was pleased debut the special edition Legacy Museum trailer at this year’s Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS).“To commemorate our 100 years, we created a special museum trailer equipped with interactive screens, historical photographs, rare memorabilia and a 25-minute documentary film chronicling our story as it relates to important moments in history,” said Craig Bennett, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing for Utility. The Legacy Museum trailer is designed with four interactive touchscreen monitors and audio equipment for viewing movies, photos, and browsing through Utility’s historical timeline. At the front of the trailer, an

eight-seat movie theatre and sound system featured, “One Hundred Years of Building Trailers: The Utility Centennial Story”, a documentary film that could be viewed throughout trade show hours. Additional museum elements include a World War II memorabilia shadow box displaying the original classified movie reel of Utility’s designed M23 Ammunition trailer being tested by the U.S. Army. “This is truly a unique opportunity for all to experience Utility’s first 100 years and learn more about the many achievements in manufacturing that make us who we are today,” added Bennett. The Legacy Museum trailer debuted at MATS, and will continue on to other events throughout the year. Additionally, Utility showcased one of their earliest trailer models along with the current 4000D-X Composite dry van, 3000R reefer, and 4000A flatbed trailers. b

Benchmarks For Mandatory Entry Level Driver Training Trucking HR Canada, the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and provincial trucking associations have joined together in a project that will establish the benchmarks for the industry’s goal of seeing mandatory entry level driver training introduced across Canada – a key step in addressing the trucking industry’s intensifying shortage of qualified personnel. The three-year Driving the Future project is supported with $1.2 million in funding from Employment and Social Development Canada’s Sectoral Initiatives Program, and will be led by Trucking HR Canada. The work is also a direct response to recent recommendations by the CTA’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Truck Driver Shortage

in Canada, and a landmark Conference Board of Canada report on the issue. The project will begin by clearly defining the skills and abilities that today’s carriers expect entry level drivers to have. A related focus on more experienced drivers will take a vital step toward a national apprenticeship-like program. Driving the Future will then identify the steps an entry level driver needs to follow to be certified, such as the knowledge to be demonstrated in written tests, performance standards for road tests, and minimum requirements for experiences such as time behind the wheel. “This work will take us beyond the steps needed to earn a licence,” says Angela Splinter, CEO of Truck-

BCTA Comments On New Commercial Facility At Aldergrove Border Crossing The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) welcomes the recent announcement by Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Steven Blaney that the federal government is investing $17.7M to, among other improvements for cross-border travellers, build a full-processing facility and supporting infrastructure for commercial vehicles at the Aldergrove border crossing. The expanded facility, projected for completion in early 2016, is expected to improve efficiency for the trucking industry and provide stability and access for companies looking to grow and establish their operations in the Aldergrove area. “We are extremely pleased that the government has recognized the value of Aldergrove to cross-border trade along with the Pacific Highway crossing and Huntingdon in Abbotsford,” said Louise Yako, BCTA’s President & CEO. “Because Aldergrove was originally designed as a crossing for passenger cars, there was an understandable tendency to ‘stick with the

program’ in terms of envisioning its future. But with input from our members and the local business community, the ministry realized the opportunity to support and enhance trade via land border ports in the region.” Since August 2010, commercial vehicle traffic at Aldergrove has been restricted to local area carriers who are granted a Letter of Authorization to use the port, while the government assessed the feasibility of constructing a new facility. The restriction has meant recent growth in cross-border truck volumes has put additional pressure on the two neighbouring commercial ports, Pacific Highway and Huntingdon. Together, the three commercial ports saw truck volumes increase (north and southbound) 11 percent between 2009 and 2012. In 2012, the most recent year statistics are available, the Pacific Highway

ing HR Canada. “Working alongside the carriers who will ultimately hold entry level drivers to these higher standards, we will clearly identify the skills and abilities that drivers are expected to demonstrate when they are first hired. This will guide the schools who develop training programs, make graduating drivers more employable, and better meet the trucking industry’s needs.” “The CTA Blue Ribbon Task Force on the Driver Shortage has taken a leading role in what many carriers say is the trucking industry’s greatest long-term challenge,” says David Bradley, CEO of the Canadian Trucking Alliance. “By taking this important step toward mandatory entry level driver training, we are beginning a process that we believe will result in truck driving being recognized as a skilled occupation, which will enhance the attractiveness of the job and the industry while enhancing highway safety.” b and Blaine (US) crossings processed 715,000 trucks (north and southbound), or nearly 2,000 trucks per day. Huntingdon/Sumas (US) handled 245,000 trucks (north and southbound), while Aldergrove/ Lynden (US) processed 54,000 trucks (north and southbound). Collectively, truck trade via the three Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley commercial crossings grew from $12.1 billion in 2009 to $14.3 billion in 2012 – an increase of 18 percent. The Pacific Highway in Surrey is Canada’s fourth busiest commercial crossing (after Ontario land border ports in Windsor, Sarnia and Fort Erie), while Huntingdon is thirteenth. In addition, a new facility at Aldergrove is good news because the Pacific Highway crossing, in particular, has limited opportunities for expansion and can frequently become congested, with delays for commercial vehicles. It is a key investment anticipated by the Canadian trucking industry as a result of the 2011 Canada/US Beyond the Border Action Plan to facilitate trade. b

Mack Trucks: ‘Born Ready’ For The Long Haul Fuel efficiency and uptime remain top priorities for Mack Trucks, executives with the company said recently at the 2014 Mid-America Trucking Show. This ongoing focus to help reduce customer operating costs, along with recent investments in products, support solutions, facilities and the brand, has Mack well-positioned for success in the highway market. “Customers need trucks that maximize their ROI,” said Stephen Roy, President of Mack Trucks North American Sales and Marketing. “The best way to do that is to provide products that increase fuel efficiency and aftermarket services that keep trucks on the road generating revenue. It also means offering uptime solutions that go beyond the industry norm to support our customers when they need it.”

Mack’s offer demonstrates fuel efficiency leadership, featuring a wide range of high-performing proprietary engines and the game-changing Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission (AMT). Mack engines are GHG 2014-certified and offer up to a 2.4 percent increase in fuel efficiency. The mDRIVE improves drivability and boosts fuel efficiency by up to 5 percent over a manual transmission. A Mack Pedigree Powertrain combines a proprietary Mack engine, transmission and axles. A recently introduced version of the Pedigree Powertrain, the Mack Super Econodyne, seamlessly integrates a Mack MP8-445SE engine, mDRIVE AMT and proprietary axles to increase fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent compared to similarly spec’d vehicles.

DriveBC Launches Route Planner For Truckers Commercial drivers in B.C. can organize smarter and more efficient trips thanks to a new DriveBC route planner. The Commercial Vehicle (CV) Route Planner is a free online feature that provides truckers with locations and details of potential clearance restrictions. This new planning tool will assist truckers when applying to the ministry for an oversize/overweight single trip permit. The CV Route Planner maps the shortest distance route and highlights restrictions along the route based on vehicle height and width.

The CV Route Planner is the latest example of new technology now available to truckers. On DriveBC, commercial drivers can also see current highway conditions, with nearly 400 highway webcam images strategically placed around the province. Weigh2GoBC is another option saving truckers time and money by allowing registered vehicles to be weighed and measured electronically without needing to stop at selected inspection sites. DriveBC was launched in 2005 and is the government of B.C.’s most popular website. b

All of these fuel saving features are available in the versatile Mack Pinnacle model. Offered in both axle forward and axle back configurations, the Pinnacle easily handles the rigors of the road, while providing the power and performance expected of a Mack. An optional 6x2 version, as well as drag-reducing roof, chassis and side fairings, make this king of the road even less inclined to spend time at the pump. “We’ll put our fuel efficiency up against any other OEM’s products,” Roy said. “For Mack, it’s all about positively impacting our customers’ bottom lines. That’s the commitment we’re making to them every day.” Living up to this commitment means not only industry-leading products, but superior service and support as well. Mack’s GuardDog Connect telematics-based solution quickly diagnoses potential issues, proactively schedules repairs and confirms that required parts are in stock and ready to install, all while the truck is still on the job. As soon as a potential issue is detected, an automatic alert is sent to Mack OneCall, Mack’s 24/7 customer support center staffed by trained specialists. The Mack OneCall team immediately evaluates the situation, a case is opened in the Mack ASIST web-based fleet service management platform, the owner or fleet service manager is contacted and the repair planning process begins through a customerchosen dealer. The process includes verification that a bay and the necessary parts are available. Mack OneCall also electronically sends repair instructions to the dealer. The end result is that technicians are fully prepared when the truck arrives, getting the customer back on the road faster. GuardDog Connect is Continued on page T-10

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced a regulatory proposal requiring almost all interstate commercial truck and bus companies to use Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) in their vehicles to improve compliance with the driver hours of service (HOS) standards. Under the proposal, ELDs would be mandated for all drivers currently using paper log books. The technical specifications for ELDs are defined and the supporting document requirements are clarified. In addition, FMCSA proposes procedural and technical provisions aimed at ensuring that ELDs are not used to

The proposed rule, which is expected to be published tomorrow, will be subject to a 60-day comment period, after which a final rule can be introduced. Mandatory compliance would likely occur two years after publication of a final rule. The Canadian Trucking Alliance, which has supported the introduction of a universal ELD mandate in Canada, welcomed the announcement. “While it will take us some time to digest the full extent of the FMCSA proposal, we hope the announcement will focus Canadian governments’ efforts leading to a similar proposal in this country,” said CTA president and CEO David Bradley. harass vehicle operators as well as such things as grandfathering provisions for existing electronic log technology already installed by some carriers. An ELD is defined as recording-only technology, used to track the time a commercial vehicle is operating. An ELD is integrally connected to the vehicle’s engine, uses location information, and is tamper-resistant. An ELD automatically tracks vehicle movement, but allows for annotations by both the driver and the motor carrier’s agent to explain or correct records. An ELD does not necessarily have to be a physical device — it is a technology platform, and may be portable or

Inland Kenworth Moves Campbell River Dealership Inland Kenworth has relocated its Campbell River dealership to a new full-service facility with twice the space of its previous location and a building design with improved lighting and state-of-theart equipment to speed parts and service support. The new 20,000 square-foot facility is located at 2900 North Island Highway about 1 kilometer north of its previous site, and 155 kilometers north of Nanaimo off British Columbia Provincial Route 19A, which is

Vancouver Island’s main north-south route. In celebration of the new dealership, Inland Kenworth – Campbell River will host an open house and grand opening from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10. “Our new facility features a parts inventory control system that helps the parts department stay well-stocked with quality Kenworth proprietary and TRP all-makes parts,” said Falko Heuser, Branch Manager of Inland Kenworth – Campbell River. “Desktop computers and

Cummins Emission Solutions New EcoFit Urea Tanks & Lines Make North American Debut Cummins Emission Solutions, a subsidiary of Cummins Inc. (CMI:NYSE), has introduced its recently launched EcoFit Urea Tanks & Lines to the North American construction market, providing customers the added convenience and increased integration benefits of a fully packaged aftertreatment system for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. The EcoFit Urea Tanks & Lines portfolio provides a range of urea tanks with

header unit assemblies containing intelligence for monitoring and maintaining accurate urea level, temperature and urea quality, as well as a wide range of urea lines to meet installation needs for many applications and engine platforms. A key component of EcoFit Urea Tanks is the specialized urea quality sensor, designed to detect and monitor the correct urea liquid composition, allowing the system to

function at peak performance. The robust sensing technology has been designed with the required vibration durability to withstand rough terrain environments as well as steep gradients. Built-in filtration capabilities improve the system’s reliability, capturing any foreign debris that may enter the urea holding chamber. A range of electrically heated pressure, suction and throttle line lengths from 0.5 to 3.0 meters are

most rugged and reliable trucks in the industry,” said Andy Johnson, brand manager for Western Star. “Being a part of the Michael Bay Transformers film franchise is a unique opportunity where vehicles are stars, and we’re thrilled that Western Star is a major part of this iconic franchise.” Renowned for manufacturing customer built, premium Class 8 vehicles, Western Star trucks take on the most demanding applications around the world, just as Optimus Prime takes on epic battles in the name of justice across the universe. “Transformers: Age of Extinction” opens in theaters on June 27, 2014 in North America. b

Western Star Truck Sales, Inc. showcased the newest star in its family, a powerful new Optimus Prime truck, at the 2014 Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS). The truck, which will star as the heroic lead in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming “Transformers: Age of Extinction” movie, was on display at the Western Star booth. Show attendees had the opportunity for an exclusive sneak peek at the all new Optimus Prime. Developed specifically for the new Michael

Bay film “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” many styling cues were leveraged from a new Western Star on-highway vehicle that will be unveiled in fall 2014. The new Western Star truck will be badged as a 5700. “When the producers of the film approached us to create the new Optimus Prime, we knew we already had the perfect truck in the works and that it would be an ideal partnership to showcase our dedication to engineering, design and building the

available in addition to four initial tank capacities of five, 10, 15 and 30 US gallon or 19, 38, 57 and 114 liters, including two shape orientations, providing added installation flexibility. “As we strive to provide the best available aftertreatment offering to our customers, the ability to provide fundamental componentry hand-in-hand with our proven aftertreatment technology establishes an all-encompassing system ideal for the construction market,” said Marina Savelli, General Manager of Global Off-Highway Business for Cummins Emission Solutions. “Our EcoFit Urea Tanks & Lines product offering carries the benefits of easier installation and added flexibility to adapt across a wide range of space-constrained equipment.” EcoFit UL2 Liquid-Only Urea Dosing System

Continuing to bring added ease and benefits to our customers, the new urea tanks and lines complement the EcoFit UL2 Liquid-Only Urea Dosing System by offering an endto-end full system package with robust characteristics across a wide variety of construction equipment. Benefitting the off-highway market, the EcoFit UL2 proprietary design offers reduction of droplet size to as low as 24 microns SMD, promoting improved oxides of nitrogen (NOx) conversion efficiency for those applications lacking onboard air. EcoFit UL2 is the only liquid-only dosing system in the market offering freeze-robustness in its design and improved reliability, as urea is continually present within the unit to prevent crystallization and clogging. Easier integration and improved flexibility benefits can be found in the

system’s extended urea transfer line lengths of up to 15 meters, allowing the distance between the supply and dosing unit to be chosen more freely, without affecting controls technology. EcoFit Aftertreatment Solutions Keeping focus on the off-highway equipment demands for Tier 4 Final integration, Cummins Emission Solutions has leveraged its proven experience and technology to bring innovative aftertreatment solutions to the forefront, highlighting increased durability and decreased space claim. The aftertreatment architectures showcased at ConExpo, including EcoFit Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, EcoFit SCR Systems and EcoFit Ultra-Low Emission Systems, illustrate dependable product technology for any engine platform in any environment. b

With momentum building for its line of Class 6 and 7 cabover trucks, Kenworth announced exterior and interior enhancements to its K270 and K370 models. “The new Kenworth K270 and Kenworth K370 bring Kenworth quality, innovation and comfort to a new level of excellence for the cabover market,” said Doug Powell, Kenworth’s Medium Duty Marketing Manager, who noted that Kenworth is displaying the latest K270 cabover in its booth (No. 30305) at the Mid-America Trucking Show. “A new dash and gauge cluster, front air disc brakes, electronic braking module, and a fresh exterior are among some of the key additions.” According to Powell, the Kenworth K270 Class 6 and K370 Class 7 cabovers are ideal for city and neighborhood applications, where tight turning and a shorter overall length are required. “More cities are starting to restrict the overall length of trucks in city limits or are allowing broader operating hours for short overall length trucks,” said Powell. “We expect that trend to

continue, which will drive the movement toward cabovers.” Inside the cab, a new dash and gauge cluster provide more information than ever before to the driver. Both truck models feature a standard air ride driver’s seat and 2-person bench seating with storage underneath. “We added a new option – single driver and passenger seats with a large console with cup holders in between,” said Powell. Available with wheelbases ranging from 142 to 242 inches in 12-inch increments, the K270 and K370 can accommodate bodies from 16 to 28 feet. A large 2,500-square-inch wraparound windshield combines with large side windows to give optimum visibility. “The Kenworth K270 and K370 cabovers are designed for pick-up-and-delivery operations, landscape businesses, food and beverage companies, furniture hauling, and street sweeping and striping, among others,” said Powell. “With a 30 percent better curb-to-curb turning radius than a conventional

Alliance Truck Parts Offers New Brake Lining Options Alliance Truck Parts, one of the leading allmakes parts brands in the commercial transportation industry, has expanded its remanufactured brake shoe and kit product line to include new EG brake lining options. The new brake lining options, rated for use on tandem axle tractor trailers up to 20,000 lbs., are manufactured for performance and durability. For customers seeking superior results, the new brake lining options provide excellent performance when combined with the Alliance brake drum, ABP N42A1657VB. In fact, when paired together, the new brake linings and existing Alliance brake drum have surpassed the dynamometer requirement of the FMVSS 121 brake stan-

dard at a 20,000-lb GAWR. “We’re proud of the expanded brake lining options and particularly of the quality we’ve achieved on these critical parts,” said Wayne Turner, Aftermarket Product Marketing Manager for Daimler Trucks North America. “We’ve been working with our distribution network and customers to meet the market demand

truck, a 63.4-inch BBC dimension that provides an extra 45 inches of payload room over a conventional, and a 35-foot overall length – which is becoming the new norm for metro cities – these are money-making machines.” Powered by the 6.7-liter PACCAR PX-7 engine, which has power ratings from 200 to 250-hp, and up to 660 lb-ft of torque, the Kenworth cabovers are now available with a 6-speed Allison transmission, joining a 5-speed transmission already available. “We also added a new, high-quality, pushbutton control shifter that integrates well in our fully trimmed interior,” said Powell. New this year on the Kenworth cabovers are Dana axles as well as front air disc brakes for improved stopping power and longer brake life. In addition, as part of the braking system, Kenworth has added an “electronic braking module” that will allow for the addition of stability control later this year. For specialized applications, Kenworth offers its new “clear rail” package that relocates the air tanks, DEF tank, battery box, and exhaust after treatment up behind the cab. This new option opens up room for custom bodies, such as street sweepers. b for quality wheel end products at a good price. These new brake lining options in our remanufactured brake shoe kits do just that; they provide customers with a quality product at a great price.” Alliance brake linings are backed by a 1-year/ unlimited-mile nationwide warranty serviceable at over 800 locations including Freightliner, Sterling, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses dealerships in the U.S. and Canada, and Travel Centres of America and Petro locations nationwide. b
