ocal hero Ben St John battled the wind and rain for a level par round of 72* to win The Sun Mountain PGA in Surrey Masters around Woodcote Park. The PGA in Surrey Secretary, Sam Smith commented: “The weather could have been better, but not the course or the spirit shown by the players. In another well supported county event some excellent golf was played, and on the players behalf I’d like to express our thanks to The PGA in Surrey’s great supporter Brand Fusion, through their Sun Mountain bag and trolley brand.” Mastering the showers and claiming the £600 winner’s cheque and top prize, St John edged out Left Handed
Golf at Silvermere’s James Ford. His last hole birdie wasn’t enough to share the honours, but it lifted him into a solo second place for the £440 runners up cheque. Trailing in a three way tie for third

E
ighty-year-old Marion Ludlam achieved a golfing ambition on Bank Holiday Monday, May 29, when she and her son Stephen, 57, beat off competition from younger and lower handicap players to win the Jubilee Foursomes at Purley Downs. Marion who joined the club in 1976 played in the inaugural Jubilee Foursomes in 1977 with her husband Tony and has played regularly in the competition since with either Tony or her son Stephen. There was a very strong field of 64 players taking part in the tournament who were there to cheer the Ludlams as they received their prize from Ladies’ Captain Frances Wood and Men’s Captain Keith Pitts, pictured. Marion, who is a Past Lady Captain at the club, said: “Finally after 40 years of trying and, with some near misses, Stephen and I have managed to win the trophy. I’m delighted.”

THE ON-COURSE FOUNDATION RECEIVES CAPTAINS’ CHARITY CHEQUE AT PUTTENHAM GOLF CLUB
E
ach year at Puttenham Golf Club the Men’s and Ladies Club Captains’ get to choose a charity each that the club supports for their term of office. When husband and wife Mike and Judy Smith were announced as the Men’s and Ladies Captain for the 2016/17 season they decided that they would join forces and jointly support the same charity for their Captains’ year. One of their sons serves in the armed forces and they were keen to find a charity that combined the military and the game of golf. That charity was to be The On-Course Foundation. The On-Course Foundation supports the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans through the game of golf. By way of various fundraising events held throughout the year at Puttenham Golf Club, which included a charity pro-am run by the South Region PGA, Mike and Judy managed to raise an impressive £16,920.42. Mike and Judy Smith presented the cheque to Vikrant Gurung, who himself lost a leg while serving with the Rifles Regiment in Afghanistan in 2009, and Anne Farrow from the On Course Foundation in front of many members at Puttenham Golf Club on
8
Tuesday 2nd May. In return Vikrant and Anne presented Mike & Judy with a plaque to acknowledge all their efforts and hard work. Mike Smith commented, “We set out at the beginning of our year with a target of raising £10,000 but thanks to the amazing generosity and support of the members at Puttenham Golf Club we were able to greatly exceed that figure and Judy and I are both absolutely delighted with the result”.

PACHESHAM GEARS UP FOR THE FUTURE Popular Surrey golf centre now has longer driving range and six hole course
A
t a time when golf courses and centres are looking for solutions to the challenge of making the game both more attractive and faster, some operators and owners are leading the way with some new ideas. Phil Taylor, owner of the popular Pachesham Golf Centre (www. pacheshamgolf.co.uk) near Leatherhead, decided a year ago to close his range and lengthen it to enable customers to hit normal golf balls instead of distance-limited range balls, as one part of a plan to improve the offering and increase business. This meant losing three holes out of the nine original ones, along with a big drop in income from closing the range. However, aware of the Super 6s event at The Centurion Club and a potential solution to speed of play, Taylor also seized the opportunity to create a better experience based on six holes.
However, he’s gone one step further by adding two holes and pin positions on each green, one the standard width of four and a half inches and another a wider six inches. The six holes comprise four par 4s, a par 3 and a par 5, altogether totalling just over 2000 yards in length. The newly re-furbished driving range
opened quietly on the 31st March, but as Taylor expressed it: “We opened on the Friday as Saturday was April Fools’ Day and some people just wouldn’t believe it!” www.pacheshamgolf.co.uk 01372 843453
LIMPSFIELD CHART 99 CLUB
G
olfers at Limpsfield Chart have come up with a unique way to entice the locals to take up their clubs and play. Their ‘99 Club’ is centred around a growing community for whom nine holes on a summer evening is the ideal way to get into the game. Named 99 because it encourages players to enjoy 9 holes in 90 minutes, the new initiative
10
is already proving popular in Oxted perhaps due to the bargain price tag – just £299 for a year’s membership. “Not everyone wants to make the sort of commitment that traditional golf clubs demand,” says Peter Masters, Limpsfield’s business development officer. “This is more relaxed and fun and we’re looking to build a 99 Club community.” The 99 Club plays after 4pm any day of the week, and has a club night on Thursdays with leagues and competitions. It also includes some afternoon play on Sundays in the winter. The move has been praised by one of golf’s governing bodies for helping to promote the game to a wider audience. Caroline Hardy-Evans, England Golf’s Surrey county officer, told us: “By promoting shorter, faster formats we
are showing busy people that golf really can fit into their lifestyle and the 99 Club supports this.” www.limpsfieldchartgolf.co.uk 01883 723405

KINGSTON GRAMMAR AND CHARTERHOUSE GOLFERS SHARE TOP BILLING IN SOUTHERN SCHOOLS INVITATIONAL Kingston’s boys are matched by Charterhouse’s girls in a closely contested nine hole junior golf tournament at Reigate Heath, while the boys’ individual scratch is won by Reigate Grammar’s Oliver Kail and the girls by Notre Dame’s Chloe Burden
P
roving the point that golf’s not only as much a game for the girls as it is for the boys, but also that it doesn’t have to take all day, the Southern Schools Invitational once again showcased the wealth of the region’s junior golfing talent. It also reinforced the fact that nine holes is every bit as much fun – and as competitive – as 18. Supported by specialist insurer Hiscox for the second time since the event was launched last year, state and private schools around the south came to play the nine hole gem that is Reigate Heath Golf Club, and showed all the adults present that the game’s alive and well in their hands. As a result of the support from the club, the members, the schools and the sponsor, a cheque for £200 was handed over to The Children’s Trust at Tadworth Court. Trust fund raiser and Reigate Heath member Jim Poole was genuinely delighted that so many had come to support the Southern Schools Invitational. As he explained: “The money raised enables the Children’s Trust to continue to do wonderful things for thousands of the UK’s brain damaged children and their families, many the result of road traffic
12
accidents, and we at The Trust thank everyone involved for this donation.” The scratch team event for the boys was won by Kingston Grammar’s team of Sam Reid (handicap 5) and Jonathan Moeller-Schwartz (12), and for the girls’ scratch by Charterhouse’s team of Natalia Radomska and Andrea Nebot Marsol. For the first time that anyone could recall, the handicap team event was won by brother and sister combinations. The handicap team boys’ event was won by Woking High’s golfing brothers Oliver (handicap 23) and Freddy Wooster (19), and for the girls, it was Guildford High’s team of
golfing sisters Natasha (19) and Alex (21) Morrice. In the individual scratch event, boy’s winner Oliver Kail from Reigate Grammar proved that local knowledge – and junior membership of the club – is an advantage worth having! Chloe Burden from Notre Dame Lingfield won the girls’ individual scratch, proving that when it comes to low scoring, golf’s as much a game for the girls as it is for the boys.

SURREY U12 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP With a record entry of 61 players the Surrey U12 County Championship, the Paul Casey Trophy, took place on a lovely May Sunday afternoon at Chobham Golf Club. With players as young as seven-years-old taking part, it showed the strength of Surrey junior golf at this present time and for the future.
T
he format for the Championship is 18 holes stroke play, in addition to this main competition there were handicap prizes and a putting competition. Lucas English (Hindhead) won the putting with Hashim Banday (Royal Mid-Surrey) in second. The handicap prizes were 1st Monty Holcombe (Horton Park), 2nd Joe McSweeney (Hoebridge) and 3rd Cody Fernandes (Chobham). After the 18 holes there was a tie with two players on 8 over, Aiden Millham the reigning champion for 2016 and Albert Newman, a nine-year-old. It had nearly
been a three way play off with Ugo Nguyen just missing out finishing with a score of 9 over. Aiden was first to tee off and both hit good drives straight up the fairway. Albert then hit a super shot onto the green that finished about 20 feet past the pin, which was towards the front of the green. Aiden then hit his second shot long finishing in the rear greenside bunker, but played a great bunker shot pin high seven feet to the left for his

aking the title was last year’s U16 Champion Aadam Syed (Foxhills) with scores of 71 + 69 for an excellent 140 total. Aadam was presented with the trophy by Steve Parrish, Surrey Golf Committee Chairman, on the patio in front of a good crowd who were still enjoying the fine weather and facilities at Pyrford Golf Club. third. Albert had a real go at the hole but overran hit putt by five feet or so. Aiden then sunk his putt for a fine sandy par, Albert unfortunately missed his putt for par by a whisker. Congratulations to Aiden Millham for winning and retaining the Surrey U12 Championship 2017. Aiden is only the second player in the history of the Championship to retain the trophy, a terrific feat and something he will never forget.
U18’s IN STRONG POSITION
T
he U18’s are in a strong position in the South East EGU League, currently leading their group, having played four matches with three wins and one draw. Surrey are on 7 points with Kent on 5, Hampshire on 4 and Sussex on 2 points. There is only one more triangular match to go featuring Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex and although Surrey could be overtaken by Hampshire they are hoping to win the next match and go forward to the final.

When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I started playing golf when I was 4 years old. My parents bought me plastic clubs from the supermarket. I loved playing with them but I kept turning them around because I was left handed. I grew up hearing a lot about Arnold Palmer. He was such a great ambassador for golf, a true legend, an inspiration to all golfers. I enjoy watching programmes on him and Jack Nicklaus, it was such a different time, it is really beautiful to watch the relationship they had, total respect for one another. One of my favourite Arnold Palmer quotes is “Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger”. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream team?

which highlights areas I need to work on. At the moment putting speed control and accuracy with my driver.
2016 was a great year for you. What are your plans for this year?
What are your goals for 2017 and beyond?
I want to fine tune my game, I need to be a more consistent player, this is something I will be working on with my coach at Wellington College where I go to school.
I would like to be part of the U18 National Squad and start playing in competitions outside of England.
Are there specific areas of your game that you work and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? Every round I play, I enter into golf data lab. From this I can look at all my stats
What advice would you give young players starting their journey in golf? Play as much as you can and have fun. Play with your family on holiday, enjoy the game together, celebrate the good shots, forget the bad shots but learn from them. Don’t get too caught up with your

DEBBIE RICHARDS TO CAPTAIN ENGLAND’S SENIOR WOMEN D
ebbie, from Surrey, will lead the sides for the European senior women’s team championship in Slovakia from September 5-9 and for the senior women’s Home Internationals at Newport, Wales, from 3-5 October. England will be defending the Home Internationals, aiming for their fourth consecutive win and their 11th victory since the championship started in 2003. Debbie was a member of England’s invincible senior women’s side of 2014, which won both the European team championship and Home Internationals. She commented: “I am thrilled to
have been invited to become the captain of the England senior team and very much look forward to trying to emulate the 2014 results.” Debbie speedily played her way to the top of the game after making her senior debut in 2010 when she scored the first of two wins in the second flight of the English senior women’s amateur championship. She rapidly moved into the top flight and has been a semi-finalist in the senior amateur championship and had a string of top ten finishes in the senior stroke play.

Debbie Richards, who helped England to win European senior gold, will captain the English senior women’s teams for 2017.
Debbie was a Welsh international as a girl, plays for her county, Surrey, in the second and senior teams and has won multiple championships at Burhill and Rye, where she is the current ladies’ champion. She was also a member at Royal Mid Surrey for over 20 years.

lice beat Nicola Taylor from Walton Heath, who had led the Friday opening qualifying rounds on countback from Alice and Debbie Richards with a gross 152 ( 6 over par). Alice’s subsequent progress through the qualifying rounds was steady and in the final, her consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th helped her clinch the match on the 14th to great applause! Forty five competitors set out on

Friday 21st April for the Championship playing 36 holes of stroke play with the top 16 qualifying for the weekend match play. The weather was set fair all weekend so the conditions were enjoyable throughout the tournament. It was encouraging to note that of the initial entry 13 players were under 18 years of age and the youngest prize winner was 11 year old Hyun-Ji Kim from Wimbledon Park who won a handicap prize for the Friday afternoon round. Alice beat Pavani Kumar, also from Royal Mid-Surrey in the semi-final just winning on the 18th and Nicola had beaten Katie Fewster from Worplesdon in her semi-final. It was a highly competitive final which was watched
by many of our juniors alongside other supporters. The game was played in great spirit throughout with Alice being the deserved winner.

CRANLEIGH’S FIRST FEMALE CAPTAIN Heather Kitson becomes the first female club captain at a Surrey golf club
T
he 64-year-old retired teacher was the first woman to become club captain in Cranleigh Golf & Country Club’s 32-year history earlier this year and has revealed she received overwhelming support from her male counterparts. While some golf clubs continue to live in the past in terms of the traditional positions of power, the forward-thinking club has become a standard-bearer for gender equality. Kitson said: “In this day and age, it should not be about one sex having more power than the other one. Women can do as much for the club as the men. I think we need to all work together to find the best way to spend our leisure time.” “I’d like to think we as a club are leading the way for some others and we have to get away from the attitude of ‘we’ve always done it this way so we
can’t change’. I think we are doing that here. “Our motto for the coming year is ‘Transparent, inclusive and accountable’. Kitson, originally from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, took up the sport at the age of nine at Castlerock and as an 11-handicapper, she can certainly hold her own on the course, playing – and often beating – the men from the yellow tees.
KATH RE-WRITES RECORD BOOKS AT WEST BYFLEET GOLF CLUB WITH 30-STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING MARGIN
K
ath O’Connor sent records tumbling in breaking 70 at West Byfleet Golf Club for the first time, a feat that took the great Dame Laura Davies almost 40 years! The plus-two handicapper had rounds of 71 and 66 for an astonishing 30-stroke seven-under-par victory margin in the West Byfleet Golf Club Ladies’ Championship. Kath’s achievement sent members and officials searching the record books at the club in Sheerwater Road. Among the new records the 27-year-old set are: • Women’s lowest gross score recorded at West Byfleet • Lowest aggregate by far in the club’s Ladies’ Championship
20
• Biggest victory margin ever recorded in any competition at West Byfleet Welsh international Kath, twice her country’s national champion, moved to Bisley, near Woking, four years ago to be close to the PGA European Tour’s headquarters at Wentworth where she works in tour operations. Kath opened with a 71 and then it all clicked for the ‘best round’ of her life in a six-under-par 66 that involved hitting 17 greens in regulation. Kath’s four birdies were eclipsed by an eagle three at the 16th when her approach finished four feet from the cup. The seven-under aggregate was 30 strokes better than teenager Sarah Jane Dalgliesh, a six-
handicapper, who had rounds of 87 and 80, with Cathy Dawson (87, 86) in third.

TILLMAN TROPHY 18TH – 20TH JULY 2017 Knole Park Golf Club, Sevenoaks
T
his year the Tillman Trophy will be held in the outstanding setting at Knole Park in Sevenoaks, arguably Kent’s finest inland course. The Tillman Trophy was established by founder Bill Tillman. Bill had made a very comfortable living from the restoration of antique furniture. Indeed the table used on the last green at the Open Championship, holding the famous Claret Jug, is a Tillman table. Following one of his many trips to the USA, Bill tried to convince the English Golf Union to accept the use of the larger ball, but his forthright approach did not succeed. So, he decided to start a tournament for elite players, where the big ball would be compulsory. Past winners include Ernie Els, Mike McLean, John Cook, Ross
Fisher, Adam Gee, Seve Benson, Henry Smart, and of course Adam Tillman. The tournament, takes place over three days with 36 holes being played by the leading 40 and ties after the first two rounds. Entry is limited to handicaps of 1.0 and better. The Tillman Trophy is now established as one of the premier amateur golf tournaments with world ranking points available.
“Knole Park is still very new, but I think, when it is a little older, few, if any, park courses will be better. Certainly none will be prettier.” Wrote Darwin in The Golf Courses of Great Britain in 1925.
KNOLE PARK GOLF CLUB A COURSE STEEPED IN HISTORY AND A TRULY INSPIRING PLACE TO PLAY
Unique amongst golf courses in the United Kingdom, Knole Park Golf Club is located within 1000 acres of outstanding parkland, home to the finest

CHIPSTEAD GOLF CLUB
F
ound in fantastic condition, Chipstead Golf Club is a great track with stunning views over the Downs and Chipstead Valley. The course needs to be played with a certain amount of course management. Played from the white tee’s and tricky
from the off, the first hole, an uphill dogleg left (327 Yards, Par 4) has the longer hitter aiming for a plateau that sits before the green. It is a great starting hole, but stray a little left and trees will block out your second shot. Another one to look out for is the sharply descending 5th (182 Yards, Par 3) which plays a lot shorter than its length, and club choice is crucial here, as miss the green and there is a lot of trouble. Holes 11 (221 Yards), 12 (194 Yards) and 13 (223 Yards) are Chipstead’s own ‘Amen Corner’. The Paddock is three particularly tough consecutive par 3’s, which can make or break your score with three solid tee shots required and a sharp short game. Even a scratch player would be proud of pars. Speak to a member about scoring well on the

course and the reply will be “it’s all about The Paddock”. The 18th (437 Yards, Par 5) is a dogleg left to right and a good finishing hole, once on the fairway you will be given the opportunity to find the putting surface in two, BUT this green is severely sloping and two putts will be a solid achievement. Chipstead GC is without doubt not to be missed.

When it comes to ‘pitching’ many club golfer’s struggle with yardage control and strike, because of this lack of trust in this aspect of their game they commonly have the attitude that to just to hit the green is good enough. Getting a player to understand swing length and club selection and learning a simple technique we can easily improve this important aspect of the game. By Simon Bates
1
2
T
he simple efficient technique can be applied to three different length backswings and once you have learned to do this with one club, try this technique with two or three clubs commonly pitching wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge. We can very quickly achieve pin point control and help your scoring from 80 yards. Firstly, let’s make sure we have the correct set up.... I regularly see players setting up to their pitch shots believing that their hands and weight are forward, whilst this is perfectly correct, it’s not necessary what is being achieved. Commonly the player has the ball position too far back and the feet alignment too open (left for a right-handed player). This poor setup position affects the head location and angle of the spine. Usually once the spine angle and head are out of position the likelihood of an upward angle of attack through impact is increased and ‘fat’ or ‘thin’ strikes are inevitably going to happen. To achieve a correct set-up with the weight forward is very simple, I always like to work on setting the head location first. In my opinion it’s the most important aspect of our set-up! By simply standing vertical and leaning our head over towards our front foot we are leaning from the top, a little like the leaning tower of Pisa, this ensures our head position is over the forward foot and because of this my spine angle is now leaning towards the target, my hands are in-line with the
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
3 centre of my font thigh and my club sits squarely behind the ball which is located on the left centre of my stance. This slightly forward ball position will encourage me to turn through impact and produce a crisp strike (see pic 1). You can also see I have a definite angle difference between the shaft and the angle of the back of my right forearm. Keeping this angle in place through the duration of the body swing helps with achieving the correct angle of attack into impact, achieving a good solid strike and helps to keep a constant tempo to the golf swing (see pics 2 & 3 – good set up).
HOW DO WE PLAY THE SHOT? Firstly, we should start with our 48-degree wedge or pitching wedge.
4 We will swing this club to an 8 to 4 swing. This is the shortest of the three swings which we’re going to learn and so generally the easiest to perfect (see pics 3 & 4). Imagine standing inside a large clock face with 6 o’clock where the ball is located and 12 o’clock above your head. I want you to imagine that you’re swinging your club back until your lead arm (my left arm as I am right handed) is pointing towards 8 o’clock and then turn towards the target and allow your non-lead arm (my right) to match up the swing to 4 pm. Thus, achieving an 8 to 4 swing. Now you have the set-up and the mental picture you need some practice time, hit 10 shots with this club swinging the club from 8-4 and you

KEY POINTS
TO REMEMBER
1
Weight on front foot: This is achieved by moving the head over the front foot and not by sliding the legs forward.
2
Wrist angle: Keep the relationship between the back of the right forearm and the shaft the same during the whole swing.
3
Tempo: the distances are achieved because of the swing length and NOT because if the speed, try to keep the tempo of the swings the same.
4
Practice: Work on hitting these shots when you’re down the range, you need to practice and become familiar with your yardages.
5

will produce an average distance. Try to practice on an environment where you can either measure the distances of your shots or use a launch monitor like the ones we use in the studio. With the same club now work on hitting shots with a ‘9 to 3’ swing. Remember the tempo of the swing must remain constant, you’re not trying to hit this shot further or harder, simply the length of the swing with the same tempo will achieve a different yardage (see pics 5 & 6 – 9 to 3 swing). Just like the first two shots, the set-up, technique and tempo all stay the same, the only difference is the amount of body and arm swing we need to achieve the 10-2 positions. Don’t worry if your hips need to rotate on the backswing for you to achieve the 10pm position (see pics 7 & 8 – 10 to 2 swing). Distances will vary from player to player, so you will need to visit the practice area or a studio like ours where the launch monitors can help
CLUB
you find your yardages. Once you have one club tied down repeat with the other wedges that you carry. Having worked through the 8, 9 and 10 o’clock swings with two or three clubs you would have produced a yardage matrix like mine below and when you find yourself ‘x’ number of yards away from the flag, consult your matrix (often I keep mine in my score card holder) and then execute the shot you need.

Date of birth: 2nd September 1961 Current club: Chipstead Turned Pro: 1980 Coombe Hill Golf Club Clubs in the bag: Callaway XR 16 pro irons 5 – pw, 52 degree and 58 degree Callaway milled wedges, Callaway XR 16 Driver and 4 wood, Callaway xr16 3 and 4 rescues, white hot pro v-line putter Favourite club in the bag: My Putter
At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at? I was 13 years of age and I started my golf at London Scottish Golf Club at Wimbledon Common Who was/is your biggest influence? My dad as he was the one that introduced me to the game. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why? That’s a difficult one as Surrey has so many beautiful courses, but I would have to say Sunningdale Old. I would never get bored playing there.
What’s your favourite on course energy snack/drink? I don’t really have one Which Surrey club has the best half way hut? Sunningdale by far! What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional? That’s a difficult question as there are so many attributes required now to becoming a top player, but the one thing that I believe is so important is to develop what you have with a coach that you have confidence in and stick with it. What has been your most career defining shot so far? My opening tee shot of the 92 Open Championship, the most nervous I’ve ever been over a golf shot and to find the middle of the fairway under that pressure told me a lot about myself. What do you enjoy doing off the course? Relaxing with family and friends Dream foursome (living)? Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson all players I’ve admired so much Dream foursome (living or dead)?
Which is your favourite course worldwide?
Ben Hogan, Seve and Fred Couples
Again very difficult but I would opt for Tidewater (Myrtle Beach) South Carolina
If you could change one aspect, rule or thing about golf, what would it be and why?
What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet? There are a few but I’ve never played St Andrews so that’s the one I would look to tick off next.
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
My career high was qualifying for the 1992 Open Championship at Muirfield, as for low points, well there’s been a few but nothing too serious.
Without doubt the pace of play, to attract new players to our sport it needs to be less time consuming and fun along with family friendly so any change that involves that will get my vote!

GET INTO GOLF
HOW TO PREPARE WELL FOR GOLF with Lauren Blease Before every round of golf I always do the same warm up routine as it helps my body to prepare mentally and physically for the round ahead. I think that every player can benefit from a warm up no matter what their standard. My warm up takes about 1¼ hours, but it can be modified to make it shorter.
M
y warm up starts as soon as I arrive at the golf club and take my clubs out of the car. I walk briskly to the putting green as this helps to raise my heart rate and prepare my body for exercise. Next I will do a variety of stretches that focus on rotation and also some golf specific movements. Once this is completed I will commence the golf part of my warm up. I always start with putting then move onto chipping and bunker shots. After this it is then time to go to the range and hit some balls. I will do a couple more stretches to make sure I am really loose and then I will start by hitting some half shots with my PW gradually moving my way up the bag until I get to the driver. To finish my warm up I will hit a few more putts and then I am ready to go. I will always arrive at the 1st tee 10 minutes before my tee time to make sure I have plenty of time to pick up my scorecard and do any last minute preparations. Next time you are going to play 18 holes, try doing this warm up for yourself and see how much of a difference it will make to your game.
32
Without a warm up it will normally take most people 4-5 holes to get loose, by which point it is normally too late. Even if you only have 15 minutes, putt a little bit, stretch and then swing a club a few times on the first tee. PREPARATION IN THE GYM: As well as warming up and preparing well just before a round, it is also very important to do some exercises in
the gym to help prevent injury and increase flexibility. I will always start a gym session with a warm up, either five minutes on the bike or the rowing machine. After this I will do some dynamic stretches, my favourite of which is called a ‘spiderman’ as it is great for opening up the upper and lower body together. My gym routines vary but I always make sure I do some golf specific exercises too. There are some great

rotational exercises for golf that can be done by anyone as the difficulty level can be altered to suit all. A few of my favourites include: SEATED TRUNK ROTATION This can be done on a bench as seen in the photo with a weighted bar behind your back. With both feet planted on the floor, you would turn very gently to the right and then to the left. Alternatively it can be done on the first tee if there is a bench there using a golf club. WOOD CHOPS This is a great exercise for engaging your core which is so vital during the golf swing. It can be done with various weights but it is always good
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
to start with a lower weight and do it correctly and then gradually move the weight up. From the starting position shown keeping your arms straight and pulling your core in tightly you then bring the cable down to the finishing position shown in the picture. If you don’t have access to a cable machine this can also work with weights. MEDICINE BALL THROWS This exercise is good for rotation, as well as teaching you to use your legs at the same time. Starting in a semi squat position with the medicine ball on the right side of your body as you squat up with your legs you rotate the body moving the arms diagonally across your body as you go and finally finishing as you would a golf shot
and throwing the ball to the left. This must be done on both sides to keep everything even! I am very lucky that I am able to use the great facilities at Foxhills to do all my training. The gym has all the equipment needed to help your game and the practise facilities make a warm up before a round much easier. However, even if you don’t have access to a gym these exercises can also be done anywhere and the equipment can be very simple. Next time you have a spare 30 minutes, go through these simple rotational exercises and you will find it will help you to feel looser and more able to turn during your golf swing, which is so vital for hitting the ball straight and a long way!

BACK TO SCHOOL I
was excited to be on a two day advanced tuition course and spending time working on the different parts of my game, I was joined by two others who formed our cosy group under the teachings of the pro Tom North. Straight from the off you’re left feeling welcome and Tom engages with you to learn more about your game and concerns. There’s a warm up on the range before experiencing the indoor Video Swing Analysis centre and the GC2 Launch monitor, where you can see all your bad habits and faults that needed fixing. Watching the video gave me a good visual image and from this Tom was able to point out the faults, explain and show me the fixes and give personalised training tips to help achieve the desired positions and feelings of the golf swing.
36
We then moved onto the short game area to work on short pitch shots and bunker play . what I found particularly useful was to be in a stress free environment with plenty of time to actually take in the tips being given by and also demonstrated by a very capable pro. After an intensive morning of tuition and practise we ventured out onto the solid test of golf that is Sedlecombe GC. For those wanting to hone their short game further, there is also a 9 hole course available. After all the days activities you are certainly ready for a decent dinner and maybe a few drinks – it has got to be said that the food here is fantastic and varied enough for everyone. Day two and we took to the putting green with good tuition, a solid amount of time spent on facts, drills
and practise tips all infused with some fun games. Another intensive trip to the short game area working on chipping gave me some insightful tips for the future and points to work on. I was left with a new found confidence in this part of my game. A final trip to the range to practise yesterday’s tuition and then back to the indoor centre for the final analysis with before and after evidence. Everything from the video is sent to you via email by your pro for viewing and reminders. Overall a great experience and one I would be eager to repeat and recommend for the beginner right through to experienced player. www.jamesandrewsgolfschool.co.uk

Nothe Fort
designed Donald Trump’s Link Course in Scotland and consults for the R&A redesigning The Open courses which includes St Andrews, so in design terms the courses here at The Dorset have a pedigree that is undeniable. Hawtree is renowned for his tricky clover shaped bunkers and large and deceptive undulating greens which is what you will find here at The Dorset. The Lakeland & Parkland are the longest of the three courses with lakes coming into play on over half of the holes. The Woodland Course is a little shorter and carved through a rhododendron forest. This unique course offers a tough positional challenge and looks stunning in May and June with wall to wall flowers lining the fairway on every hole! The courses are all renowned for playing very differently in the summer and winter. In the winter the courses
play very American with almost target like golf conditions. The greens have fantastic drainage and the course never closes due to wet weather. Selecting your club becomes very important as most greens are up to 40 yards from front to back. In the summer the course dries out and plays very much like links golf. Hawtree purposely designed the greens to have run ins and run offs so that the summer requires a different tact and approach to play successfully. Truly a unique test whatever the time of year. www.dorsetgolfresort.com FERNDOWN GOLF CLUB: Faldo, Langer, Norman, Lyle, Jacklin and a host of other legendary names from the world of golf have all graced the fairways and greens at Ferndown Golf Club since it was established in 1913. Experience this wonderful course for yourself and you’ll soon understand why Rolex rates Ferndown Golf Club in the world’s top 3% of courses. THE VALE RESORT TEES UP A SIX-FIGURE GOLF INVESTMENT T
he Vale Resort in south Wales has invested more than £400,000 in state-of-the-art golf course and greens equipment as the new golf season gets off with a swing. The resort, home to two championship golf courses, has purchased 16 new high-tech John Deere cutters and mowers to enhance the condition of both the Wales National Golf Course and the Lake Golf Course. It is hoped the new equipment will give its 550-plus members and thousands of visitors, an even better golfing experience this year. And is this year pleased to be the Official Hotel to the Senior Open being held at Porthcawl this summer. “This state-of-the-art machinery will undoubtedly improve the condition of both courses and make a difference to the way the game is played on them,” said John Borja, the resort’s head green-keeper. “In order to keep the two courses in pristine condition, a variety of cutting machines are required to cut the grass in a specific manner each day in order to give it the best opportunity to grow.
The cutting direction is alternated so the ground doesn’t become ‘stressed’, creating a striped effect which helps players differentiate between the precisely cut tees, fairways and rough.” Set in 650 acres of Welsh countryside, both courses have a mixture of wooded areas, wide and narrow fairways, and water features. At 7,433 yards off the championship tees,
the Wales national is one of the longest courses in the UK, with the slightly shorter Lake course at 6,436 yards. Both courses are maintained by a team of 15 year-round staff, with additional seasonal staff required in the busier playing season of March to October. The varied landscape of the courses mean high standards are vital to ensure they can be fully enjoyed by players. “The way the fairways and greens are cut have a knock-on impact on the playability of the course,” said Mr Borja. “The preparation of the golf greens requires specialist cutting equipment to ensure they meet an exact height; we have set measurements for each aspect of the green down to the nearest millimetre. Having the best machinery is key to making sure our team can prepare the course to its full potential for guests and members.” The Vale Resort Hensol Park, Hensol Vale of Glamorgan CF72 8JY 01443 667 800 www.vale-hotel.com

through tall avenues of pine forest and surrounded by wildlife and nature, the golf course plays to 6,650 yards and demands accuracy and placement off the tee in order to maximise opportunities to hit the target greens in regulation. The course was the venue for the Portuguese Open in 1996 and 1997 and, in addition to staging several Ladies’ European Tour events, played host to the prestigious European Men’s Club Trophy in 2013. RIBAGOLFE I: Ribagolfe I provides a superb test of golf in a unique and natural setting 40 minutes from Lisbon. Designers Peter Townsend and European Golf Design were blessed with a beautiful piece of virgin cork oak forest and have created a layout which would grace any European Tour event, with superb oversized greens and a length of 7,370 yards from the back Tees. Narrow landing areas also play with the mind for long and straight hitters. RIBAGOLFE II: A shorter test than its sibling Ribagolfe I but still measuring more than 6,800 yards, Ribagolfe II was designed by former Ryder Cup player Michael King in collaboration with European Tour Design. Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvas, King has crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas. Seductively beautiful with the perfect blend of glorious beaches, nature, history, and most importantly golf, Sicily is perfectly placed in the heart of the Mediterranean with just about everything you could want from a golf holiday.
I
t has been quite a start to 2017 for Sicily which has meant it has never been too far away from the headlines. As well as hosting the world’s most powerful political leaders at the G7 Summit, the Mediterranean’s largest island was also the setting for the European Tour’s Rocco Forte Open. For many decades, Sicily has been a popular destination for tourists eager to soak up its fascinating mixture of history, art and culture. It’s an intoxicating combination which people have found hard to resist, and the same can also now be said about its golf product. With a varied range of quality golf courses and temperate climate matched by a growing choice of direct flights to its four airports and a plethora of historical, cultural and gastronomic delights, Sicily has everything needed for a golf break offering outstanding courses and that little bit more, and is fast establishing itself among Europe’s top golf destinations. There are five golfing venues on the island featuring seven 18-hole courses: Verdura Resort (45 holes),
52
Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA (36 holes), Il Picciolo ETNA Golf Resort & SPA, Allegroitalia Siracusa Golf Monasteri and Le Saie Golf Club. Situated in the valley of the River Verdura, 40km from Agrigento and on Sicily’s south-west coast, Verdura Resort is a luxury oasis and features two 18-hole championship courses – the East and West – as well as an inviting nine-hole executive course, all designed by Kyle Phillips. Host venue for the 2017 Rocco Forte Open – won by Spain’s Álvaro Quirós – Verdura also staged the 2012 Sicilian Open and boasts an array of other fivestar sports and leisure facilities as well as 203 hotel rooms and suites and a choice of four restaurants and five bars. History lovers will particularly enjoy a trip to the nearby Valley of the Temples, one of eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the island. Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa has also enjoyed the privilege of hosting European Tour action, with Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin taking top honours at the 2011 Sicilian Open. The historical cities of Val di Noto, Ragusa Ibla, Modica, Siracuse, Noto and Scicli are all waiting to be explored nearby, while fans of TV detective ‘Inspector Montalbano’ can visit famous landmarks made popular by the cult BBC series. Measuring 5,780m and offering breathtaking views of Etna from the vast majority of holes, the par72 layout is notable for tree-lined fairways and an abundance of wild flowers, placing the premium on accuracy rather than length off the tee. Complementing the golf is a four-star hotel and a range of leisure facilities. Forty-five kilometres to the south of Catania sits Allegroitalia Siracusa Golf Monasteri resort. Designed by David and Vincenzo Mezzacane, the 18-hole, par-71 course meanders through a combination of traditional Sicilian citrus, prickly pear, carob and olive trees. The resort, which is set in a typical

Benedictine monastery that later became the home of several noble families, offers 102 spacious rooms as well as a spa, several swimming pools and restaurant featuring a menu inspired by typical Sicilian recipes. Le Saie Golf Club is located in the beautiful Gulf of Catania and close to the Simeto Oasis Natural Reserve. Featuring an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by renowned Italian course designer Franco Piras, Le Saie also offers excellent practice facilities while plans are in place for a 230-room hotel to open next summer. Situated nearby is Mount Etna, Catania, Acireale, Acitrezza, Acicatena and Syracuse, as well as the Mediterranean. Golf is just one of an extensive number of activities that can be enjoyed in Sicily that arguably makes it the top destination in the Mediterranean for golf, history, areas of natural beauty, art gastronomy, to name just a few. The food is typically Mediterranean but there are strong hints of Arabic and Spanish flavours. Sicilians notoriously have a sweet tooth and are among the
best dessert–makers in Italy while, for drinks, Sicilians enjoy a fruity lemon liqueur called ‘Limoncello’. The island is also home to more vineyards than any other Italian region and has one of Italy’s most progressive wine industries. And the number of direct flights from the UK is increasing every year, with services to Catania operating from Gatwick and Luton, in addition to flights to Palermo from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted and direct to Comiso from Stansted. THE ALL NEW
Those in the know would say Miura make the world’s best forged golf clubs, traditionally hand forged for the better player and until now most wouldn’t argue. But with the launch of the aptly named Genesis PP-9005’s irons, the Miura line up sees a new beginning. These irons are a 2 pieced forged iron aimed at the mid to higher handicap player and wonderfully packed with technology.

rom all angles, these irons look stunning and are not befitting of your usual cavity backed type iron from most manufacturers. Playing with these clubs took a little adjusting to as the distance gains were at least a full club more. The thin, hot face launches the ball higher and farther than I am used to, but this is great for the ego and keeping up with longer hitters. With stronger lofts and the higher trajectory I was producing more distance and able to stop the ball quickly on the green. Fantastically forgiving for those not hit out of the centre of the club. They feel very solid and yet still soft and the ball rockets off the face of the club. I could swing within myself
which is great and could control the ball more, while still gaining distance. The sound at impact is not the usual Miura forged sound, but a solid click that’s resonated well to the ear. The clubs proved good for feedback, compared to other game improvement irons I have tested and I can see these clubs being well sought after by the player who has always wanted to play Miura but until now been unable to do so. The set, expertly fitted by Tony West based at Horton Park GC, comes in a 5 iron to PW but with distance gained I kept my hybrid 3 iron and could add another wedge to my bag. Overall these are an incredible edition to the Miura line up and have made the brand accessible to the higher

THE MIURA WAY Hand crafted forged irons by Katsuhiro Miura Miura Golf of Japan makes the world’s finest forged golf clubs, designed and manufactured by master craftsman Katsuhiro Miura. People are amazed that Miura works hands-on in his factory every day with his two sons, Yoshitaka and Shinei, who carry on the Miura legacy. His endless quest for the perfect club has brought to the world over 10 series of Miura clubs, a number that grows as he continues his meticulous refinement. These clubs are hand-crafted one-by-one and will never be mass produced. Special forging techniques assure that the grain of the steel in each club will be fine and uniform, lending to the famous Miura feel. This grain is the result of careful and patient forging and finishing, and sets Miura apart from other clubs.
handicap player, who wants to play the best or the low handicap player keen to gain distance with irons. PASSING POINT NEO GENESIS (PP 9005 G) Miura’s newest iron is crafted for golfers at all skill levels. This is the first Miura iron to combine the trademark feel of soft-forged steel with the distance generated by a 455 Carpenter steel face plate. The precision craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology and beauty of the design combine to make this iron a true game changer. 3 POCKET CONSTRUCTION Large sweet spot without sacrificing feel. combination of launch angle and spin. Crafted with the proprietary Miura forged manufacturing technique, golfers can expect feel and distance. The use of composite materials and 3-speed pocket cavity structure enables a new level of performance for all golfers. 455 CARPENTER SPECIAL STEEL Maximum distance with advanced club face. The Miura proprietary forging process has historically generated high initial ball speeds, but the advancement of technology has enabled the addition of a 455 Carpenter special steel club face to achieve even greater performance. The result yields truly impressive speed off the club face, making Genesis the longest Miura iron ever.
