PUTTENHAM’S POINT MEMBERSHIP
If your perception of being a member of a golf club is that it is elitist and expensive then you may just have to think again!
P
uttenham Golf Club near Guildford in Surrey is trying to dispel that perception with the launch of their innovative new Points Membership. Puttenham Golf Club has recognised that the expense of full golf club membership cannot always be justified by those with busy modern lifestyles. With this in mind, and to encourage a wider participation in golf, the club has designed this special form of membership that is flexible, affordable and has nearly all of the benefits of full membership. Gary Simmons the Managing Secretary at Puttenham Golf Club commented “The Points Membership

was designed to provide the perfect value solution for the infrequent golfer who seeks an affordable golf club membership that is unrestricted on when they can play and allows them to compete in club competitions and have an official handicap”. The initial membership fee is only £499 which purchases 1000 points. The Points Member can then exchange those points for rounds of golf at the relevant points rate dependant on the time of day and week.
Ralph Horne who is one of the first to join Puttenham under the new membership scheme said, “the first thing that attracted me to the points membership was the great value for money and how it allowed me to become a member of a top quality golf club without having to commit a large sum of money to full membership. I also found the flexibility of the membership appealing, and the fact that if you use the points wisely you can get 40 to 50 rounds of golf made it an easy decision to join.” Puttenham Golf Club is combining over 120 years of tradition with a modern and inclusive outlook for the 21st century to grow the game and help finally remove those old fashioned perceptions of golf club life.

COWPER CROWNED CHAMPION OF THE PGA IN SURREY Despite dropping a shot on the penultimate hole, Craig Cowper (Surrey Downs) still managed to nudge past David Copsey (DCGS Poult Wood) and Andy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) to become new The PGA in Surrey champion.
C
owper shot 70, 73 around Bletchingley Golf Club for a oneunder-par 36 hole total to claim the championship and the winner’s cheque for £1,000, while Copsey and Raitt had to settle for being the joint runners-up. Cowper commented, “The golf was a bit more up and down than either of us would have wanted, but it made for a very exciting finish. I’m delighted to have won, and would like to thank both Bletchingley Golf Club for setting up a strong challenge, and The PGA for all the work they do in making sure we have a strong schedule and wellfunded events.” After the first round it was Copsey who was out in front, shooting a threeunder-par round to lead Cowper by one. Uncharacteristically Raitt struggled
around Bletchingley, making three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey for a 75 to be three-over-par at lunchtime. In the afternoon it was Copsey that was struggling. Starting at the 10th, Copsey made a nice run of pars, dropping just the one shot at the 14th. Starting on the first, Cowper on the other hand had dropped two more shots, but a birdie at the ninth kept him in touch and one shot adrift of Copsey. Raitt in the meanwhile was back in his usual form, and would finish on level par with an impressive three-under-par 69 for a 36 hole total of 144.
As they turned for their final nines, Copsey had dropped two more shots to par after six more holes, while Cowper after dropping a shot at the 10th, had now edged two shots in front with birdies at the 13th and 15th. With three holes left, Copsey made a double at the par three seventh, leaving Cowper with a four shot lead. Two terrific birdies by Copsey at his two final holes set the target and matched Raitt’s 144, and while Cowper bogeyed his 17th, his par up the 18th was good enough to claim a dramatic victory in The PGA in Surrey Championship.
PURLEY’S KEVIN O’CONNELL WINS 1ST PGA EVENT Kevin O’Connell (Purley Downs) won the Dulwich and Sydneham Pro Am with a score of 67–2 winning by two shots over Tom Muchmore (Ashford) who posted a score of level par 69, on what was a testing day with breezy conditions and quick greens. This was Kevin’s first win in a PGA event and he was very happy with his game on the day, “I wasn’t hitting
8
the ball my best from tee to green but my short game kept me alive so I was able to grind out a good score. My putting is the best it’s been for a while now, so I’m very happy with how my game is starting to take shape” The win earned Kevin a cheque for £500 plus £75 for the team event. Congratulations Kevin!

PURLEY DOWNS EVOLVES Golf on TV has a lot to answer for. We’ve all watched the pros play immaculate courses where the fairways look like plush velvet and the greens like the baize on a snooker table. The result is it has whetted the modern golfer’s appetite to play courses in tip-top condition.
I
t is something which Richard Webber, head greenkeeper at Purley Downs Golf Club (PDGC) knows only too well. “There’s more pressure these days from golfers who expect higher standards on the courses they play. If you watch tournaments from the 80s
10
you will invariably see that the courses looked scruffy compared to how wellkept and pristine they are today,” he explains. He should know as he is part of the team which have transformed the course at PDGC to meet the expectations of today’s golfer. PDGC started life in 1894 when a
group of golfers leased land from a sheep farmer to establish a nine-hole course, which was expanded, in June 1903, to an 18-hole course designed by five-time Open Champion and golf course architect JH Taylor, who was involved in the design of many courses including Hindhead, Frilford Heath and Royal Birkdale. The course layout of PDGC has evolved in the subsequent 100 years. Old pictures from the 1950s show very few trees on the course but by 2007 the woodland areas had expanded and were encroaching onto the fairways. By the time Richard arrived in 2012 to work with agronomist Charles Henderson, the course was looking tired. “As part of my interview for the job I had to write a report on the course,” says Richard who before joining PDGC worked as assistant greenkeeper at Copthorne GC. “I walked around and
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
SURREY NEWS
saw that with an injection of knowledge and passion PDGC had huge potential. When I arrived the greens were suffering from thin turf cover, dry patch damage and high levels of organic matter (thatch). We have re-established turf cover and maintain it with an ongoing intensive aeration and sand dressing programme. Some of our greens had also been subject to coarser grass and weed invasion, which we have dealt with by a continuous renovation programme. “In 2012 the tees were heavily infested with moss content, some were bare or had thin turf cover. Again these have been renovated with a seeding programme and controlled irrigation.” In conjunction with the above, Richard and his team have implemented and follow a disciplined maintenance programme across all areas of the course, setting themselves a minimum requirement of being the best in the region for all playing areas.
Bunkers were the next priority and many needed to be relined and refilled, this work continues as part of the ongoing course management programme. Knowledge is certainly key as today’s modern greenkeeper must keep abreast of the latest methodologies in how to irrigate, feed and remove organic matter to keep greens free from pests and disease. Richard was lucky when he arrived to have a mentor in agronomist Charles Henderson who was working as a consultant at PDGC, together with the full support of his course director Ian Alchin, and the Board, who collectively realised that for a club to survive in the 21st century, it had to have a first class course. “We realise that our course is our biggest asset,” says Ian, “which is why we have invested so much hard work making it into what many people
tell us is the best in the area. Taking and following professional advice from consultants, specialists and relevant bodies, we have been able to create long term agronomic, woodland management and course development plans and documents, which have been shared with our members. These will form the basis of all future works with the basic principal of allowing greater circulation of air and sunlight to our greens and fairways, whilst respecting the original designs of PDGC as a downland golf course. “Our initial works have resulted in consistent and true greens and a course that now has the reputation of being one you can play 365 days of the year.” E: info@purleydowns.co.uk T: 0208 657 8347 www.purleydowns.co.uk

2016 ROOKIE LEAGUE FINAL The final of the 2016 Rookie League took place at Pyrford Golf Club on Sunday 11th September. Pyrford not only held the final but quarter final and semi final events.
T
he day of the final was bathed in sunshine with only the slightest of breezes, making conditions absolutely perfect for some great golf. For the first time this year there were two Rookie Leagues, one for the U14s and a new one for U18 players. Both were hotly contested throughout the year, with current U14 Rookie League trophy holders Farleigh again making it to the final, this time up against Royal Wimbledon. The U18 final put Shirley Park into battle with Wentworth. In the U18 final the first Wentworth pairing of Harry Uzzell and Alex Gadd won 4&2 over Shirley Park’s Baileigh Ingram and Khush Patel. The second match also fell to Wentworth with James Taylor and Sam Staley winning 5&4 over Saul Gudge and Iain McFeat of Shirley Park, meaning that the inaugural U18 Rookie League final was won by Wentworth. The U14 trophy was retained by Farleigh, the first club in the history of
12
the Rookie League to achieve this. In the first match Ben Kelly and Mason El-Bishlawi of Farleigh took a 3&2 victory over the Royal Wimbledon pairing of Yusuf Sarwar and Jack Evans. The second match was also won by Farleigh,
with Tom Kelly and Michael Piscina winning 5&3 over Matthew Jones and Oliver Jones of Royal Wimbledon. This second match was not without incident, as on the 13th hole, having played his shot, one of the Royal Wimbledon players accidentally hit the on switch of his electric trolley as he replaced the club In the bag, and then could only watch as the trolley headed straight for the nearest available pond. The recovery operation took quite a few minutes, but both the trolley and the clubs were eventually hoisted back onto terra firma, albeit very wet and amazingly the player went on to win the hole! A great day of golf was rounded off by a meal for the players in the clubhouse and the prize presentation. We congratulate the 2016 Rookie League winners as follows: U18 – Wentworth U14 – Farleigh

Angus Flanagan ONE TO WATCH
Member at: St Georges Hill and Woking Handicap: +3.4 When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I was given some short junior clubs when I was five years old and initially played with my Dad at our local driving range. At the age of nine I started playing at Woking Golf Club. My Dad’s hero was Seve, so I grew up with images of him. Do you have a favourite player? It has to be Martin Kaymer and with him I would love to play with Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnson and Rickie Fowler. A real mix of skills and personalities. 2016 has been a great year for you what have been your highlights? Winning the Carris Trophy. As a result I was picked to play for England under 18s and we won the Home Internationals at Ballyliffin. At the presentation for the Carris, I was given honorary membership which was a real surprise and a lovely touch. 16
Are there specific areas of your game that you work and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? I spend a lot of time practising my chipping and putting, this is where you gain or lose a lot of shots, so I have always worked on this area. My Coach, Jim Christine works with me on a regular basis, pointing out little issues for me to work on. Surrey and England are keen for us to use Golf Data Lab and this helps me analyse where I am wasting shots and what I need to work on.
2016 Achievements: Winner of England Boys U18 Open Strokeplay Championship (The Carris) Part of England team that won the Home Internationals St Georges Hill Club Champion have the ability and the mental strength to give yourself the best chance.
What are your goals for 2017 and beyond?
What advice would you give young players just starting on their journey in golf?
I would like to go to a university in the US where I can work on my golf while gaining a good degree. I would like to keep progressing in golf and hopefully turn it into a career. I am aware of the challenges that come with that, not many go on to be successful, so you have to

he team are celebrating a superb campaign after they beat Spain 4-3 at Oddur Golf Club in Iceland to win the gold medal at the European Ladies’ Team Championship. It’s their first victory since 1993 when, coincidentally, they also beat Spain to the title. Since then they’ve had three silvers and for the past three years, they’ve been involved in bronze medal play-offs but have left the championships empty handed on each occasion.
SAM ROWAN WINS SOUTH REGION MEDAL FINAL The England Golf Regional Medal Final took place at Blackmoor GC on Thursday 5 May. Sam Rowan (The Drift) won the event by playing 2 under her handicap and Mandy Hiscocks (Banstead Downs) was second, one shot behind. In the tournament for County Presidents, Surrey was represented by Rosemary Wallis and Terry Christie (Presidents), and Jill Thornhill and Roger Vincent (Past Presidents). Their total of 77 points saw them finish in 7th place and only 4 points behind the winners from Lincolnshire. Good effort!
18
Today, though, it was the gold medal, with the winning point scored by English champion Bronte Law, who won all five of her games in last month’s Curtis Cup. The team, coached by Steve Robinson of Yorkshire and captained by Anne Baines of Lancashire, was Emma Allen (Meon Valley), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted), Bronte Law (Bramhall), Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough), Lizzie Prior (Burhill) and OIivia Winning (Rotherham)

NEWS EXTRA
NEW LEASE OF LIFE FOR MOORE PLACE GOLF CLUB An attractive parkland golf course, open all year round – ideal for beginners and experienced players alike • Parkland course • 9 holes • 2103 yards • Par 66
M
oore Place Golf Club is a charming parkland, 9-hole course hidden away just half a mile from Esher town centre. This superb value course is open all year round and is ideal for beginners and experienced players alike. Many players started their golfing careers here and have fond memories of this intricate and challenging course. What the course lacks in length it makes up for with its tight drives and sharp doglegs. The very nature of the landscape and sub-soil allows it to be free draining and therefore the course remains open when many are forced to close. Opened in 1926 by Harry Vardon (six times Open Champion) Moore Place had changed very little (apart from some holes being lengthened) but recently it has undergone an extensive revamp of both the course and its facilities. The new clubhouse opened in February of this year, it incorporates a fully stocked pro shop and you can now enjoy a hot or cold drink on the veranda overlooking the course or inside while watching Sky Sports. The course itself has also been dramatically improved. A new course layout has been implemented along with new bunkering. The greens are some of the
22
best around and with the ongoing investment this course is set to become one of the pinnacle 9 hole pay and play facilities in the South. Visitors are always welcome. Green fees start from just £9 for 9 holes with no booking required midweek. Professional and friendly staff are on hand for advice on equipment and custom fittings. Lessons are available both on the practice area and on the course if required. For information on becoming a member please call 01372 463533 or visit www.mooreplacegolf.co.uk

SEEING IS BELIEVING How to film and what to look for in your golf swing By Steve Blacklee
I
t’s been widely accepted in golf coaching for many years that what golfers feel they do in their golf swings is often far from the reality. The days of coaching by standing on the teaching tee telling a pupil what they could be doing better and expecting them to understand by words and demonstration only are long gone (or they should be). With the advancement in technology it’s never been easier to film your golf swing yourself. There are many easily accessible devices such as mobile phones or tablets that have camera functions, many of which have high shutter speed facilities for fast moving objects such as the club head, that could be used to improve your golf. Before you head to the range, phone in hand to film your swing, here are some tips on how to maximise using your technology.
1
HOW TO FILM FROM ‘DOWN THE LINE’ Amongst other aspects, this angle provides important feed back on the plane of the swing, ie the angle in which the shaft balances both on the back swing and down swing. However, the camera angle has to be correct otherwise it can give a false impression (pic 1). Set up with your feet parallel to an alignment rod (or club) and about 3 inches inside these. You can then align your camera directly down the alignment rod, ideally from about waist height. This should give you a square view of the side of the body and the lead leg and hip should be completely out of view. You don’t need too much scenery!
24
So zoom in and film from just below the feet to a little above where the club will be on the back swing. Good things to check from the down the line view: POSTURE: Three good clean angles in the calf, thigh and lower spine with the weight centred vertically down through
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
2
the back of the shoulder, front of the knee to balls of the feet. Use drawing tools on the V1 Golf app to check this (pic 2). BODY ANGLES: Check your body angles and height variance through the swing. It sounds logical to maintain the exact height through the swing but such is the dynamics and forces being created in the golf swing,
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
3
some up or down movement in the head is fine. Check out videos online of the world’s best players and you’ll be amazed at how much they change their height through the swing! Too much (more than 2 inches) indicates a problem with the pivot motion (pic 3). continued on page 26
25
GOLF ACADEMY
4
PLANE OF CLUB: Try to get the club working up and down a similar plane for the back and downswing. A good reference for this is between the shoulder and elbow. The plane affects the club path so it’s an important point. Make sure your camera angles are good (pic 4)! TOP OF THE BACKSWING: With a full swing the club should point at the target at the top of the backswing and the left arm should be level to the shoulders. HOW TO FILM FROM ‘FACE ON’
5
Not as critical to get right as the down the line view but try to get the camera at a right angle to the target line and positioned directly in front of you. Again, don’t film with too wide a view. The smaller the image the more difficult it is to see smaller details so keep the zoom in close with minimal dead space under the ball or above the club at the top. Good things to check from face on... BALL POSITION: This very easily creeps too far back or too far forward without the player realising it. Until you actually check the ball position properly, you really don’t know where it is as it is not easy to look down at your feet and get the right perspective on ball position. Check it from a square, face on view with the camera and see if the ball is positioned where you thought it was (pic 5).
6
GRIP: Check to see if you can see 2 knuckles on the left hand. If you can, chances are the right hand will fit into the correct position too. Less than 2 knuckles is termed a weak grip and could lead to a fade or slice whereas more knuckles is strong and can lead to a hook. BODY TURN ON BACK SWING: Make sure you have a 90’ shoulder turn on the back swing with the spine angle tilted slightly away from the target. This will help the chest turn behind the ball and transfer weight to right side (pic 6).
7
FINISHING POSITION: Turn through to a full finish with the trailing shoulder closer to the target than the lead with the body fully rotated through and the weight on 90/10 on the forward foot. A good body rotation through the back and the downswing greatly increase the chances of the hands, arms and club also working in harmony with the body to form a simple coordinated golf swing (pic 7).

MEET THE PRO
At what age did you start playing golf and which club did you start at?
Which is your favourite course worldwide?
I started at Monifieth Links, in Dundee at around 10.
Tough, but Kiawa Island, Carolina or Kingston Heath in Australia
Who was/is your biggest influence?
What course is on your bucket list that you have not played yet?
Mark Bull, soon to be Dr Mark Bull, one of the biggest brains in golf. Which is your favourite Surrey course (apart from the one you are resident at) and why? Sunningdale Old, it is just a wonderful, spiritual experience every time I play it, although I cannot split it with the West at Wentworth.
Augusta. What have been the highlights and low points of your career? The high point was watching a disabled man who had not played in 16 years hit a ball from a Paramobile cart. The low point is every time a player moves on. What’s your favourite on course energy snack/drink?
Any of the 5 holes in one’s!
Grape flavoured Nuun.
What do you enjoy doing off the course?
Which Surrey club has the best half way hut?
Walking my dog, being with my family, training, reading and playing tennis.
I have to say Foxhills or Sunningdale. What advice would you give to the Surrey youngsters wanting to turn professional? Own your own game, question everyone around you, work harder and smarter than everyone else, learn the art of scoring, don’t obsess with technique and remember that movement variability is necessary to become skilled. Become a problem solver, believe in yourself, surround yourself with people that are better golfers than you, stretch yourself in practice, never waste a shot. But above all be a good human.
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
What has been your most career defining shot so far?
Dream foursome (living)? Gary Player, Marcus Fraser, Anthony Robbins and Will I Am. Dream foursome (living or dead)? Harry Vardon, Jack Nicklaus, Moe Norman and Tiger. If you could change one aspect, rule or thing about golf, what would it be and why? What would I change in golf? That it would be given more main stream media coverage to encourage growth at grass route level.

Drift Golf Club The Drift Golf Club in East Horsley, Surrey is home to a magnificent, par 73 championship course and is just a few minutes’ drive from junction 10 of the M25 and A3. Designed by British Open Winner Sir Henry Cotton and architect Robert Sandow the course opened in 1975 and makes superb use of the mature oak woodland on which it was built.
S
ince 2001 the club has been privately owned by the Connell Family who also own and manage Badgemore Park in Henley-on-Thames. Members of both clubs speak highly of the significant levels of annual investment made by the owners and the resulting quality of the courses and clubhouse facilities. COURSE The course at The Drift is cleverly designed with four starting and finishing points right by the clubhouse
creating four loops of four or five holes, ideal for multi tee starts or sneaking out for some evening practice to hone your skills. The tree lined course rewards accuracy but with a lack of significant rough it is usually fairly straightforward to find your ball after an occasional errant shot. The club’s goal for course set up is to create a tough but fair challenge for all golfers. With four sets of distance markers on each hole the course yardage ranges from 5029 to 6443. This allows all standard of golfers to enjoy the beautiful golf course. MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS Top quality playing surfaces are always at the forefront of the management teams thinking. In 2011 the owners took the enormous decision to invest in a fully automated irrigation system
30
to all greens, tees, approaches and fairways. The fantastic presentation results since the installation of the irrigation system are now evident to all who visit. Any golfer who hasn’t visited for a while may be excused for remembering hard, sometimes unfair bounces, lost balls and huge swathes of rhododendrons which previously lined the fairways – not anymore. To some, a controversial decision was made to clear large areas of the beloved purple ‘rhodys’ which flanked the fairways as part of a woodland management programme to allow the wonderful oak woodland to thrive. This work has not only created a much fairer feel to the course with more generous landing areas but it has helped alleviate the bane of all golfers, slow play, leading to a much more pleasurable experience.

gently undulating parkland course with generous fairways and rough kept to a length where finding the off line shot does not cause too many difficulties. The errant shot is much more likely to be punished by the intervention of one of the many evergreen oak, pine, olive, carob and palm trees that dot the course blocking the way to the pin. There is, however, always a range of shots on offer providing realistic options for both accomplished and more modest players. All parts of the course give fine views of the pine clad mountains which protect the course from the worst of any winter storms and from many holes there are splendid views over the Bay of Cala Millor.

ADVERTORIAL REVIEW
SOLD OUT! SALES SO HIGH THEY ARE HEAVENLY! That’s the story this year for the guaranteed shank proof irons from Heavenly Hybrid
O
wner, Stuart Smith said: “We are so pleased with how sales have gone for us this year, and it just proves that you can buck the trend when it comes to selling golf clubs. With the likes of Nike and Adidas pulling out and others striving to improve sales, it’s satisfying to see ours are up 48% so far on last year, and we still have three months to go.” What have we got that other companies haven’t? “I put this down to having the right product at the right price! When I designed the clubs, I looked at what golfers struggled with and how I can improve this in a set of irons, and set about designing them for the golfer. Top issues are: Shanking (the swear
word), lack of distance, especially for the senior golfer and confidence. A hybrid head meets two of the three issues as we are able to produce a head which is 100% shank proof, yes no more shanking, and they do hit naturally further than traditional irons, so by producing a club which can do this for golfers the third issue – confidence comes easily”
Remove the pain right now from your game with these revolutionary hybrid irons and start seeing the pleasure come back! NEW stock just arrived! Be quick with your order to guarantee delivery in case we sell out again! For only £59 per club you can have all this: • 100% Shank proof irons • See your ball fly higher and further straight away • Greater accuracy • Improved short game T: 07766 733560 E: admin@heavenlyhybrid.com www.heavenlyhybrid.com

MIZUNO’S NEW JPX EZ SERIES
Mizuno, the Japanese golf equipment manufacturer, founded in Osaka, Japan in 1906, has been at the forefront of golf equipment design for 110 years. This year they launched the next generation JPX EZ metal woods family, and new S5 wedges.
M
izuno has quietly posted many landmarks in the evolution of modern drivers and fairway woods over the years. Now the JPX EZ Series, the latest Mizuno metal woods in the illustrious line, boast a host of ingenious design features engineered to break new ground via a combination of adjustability and offcentre forgiveness. JPX EZ DRIVER The simplified adjustability and clever design of the new JPX EZ driver allow club golfers to enjoy the combined performance attributes of adjustability and off-centre forgiveness. While previous movable weight

drivers have proved less playable due to the extra weight needed for the tracks and weight ports, the JPX EZ addresses the issue with a simple three-weight system that delivers forgiveness to match non-adjustable models. Slotting a 10g weight in one of the three ports lets golfers instantly change between a draw, neutral or fade bias, with the head’s large ‘footprint’ promoting a highlaunching, low-spinning flight. A more rounded crown further enhances playability by allowing the clubface to flex more freely, generating higher ball speeds and more forgiveness on mishits high in the face. A Quick Switch
adjustable hosel provides further scope to optimise loft and launch. JPX EZ FAIRWAY AND HYBRIDS JPX EZ Fairway woods and hybrids boast larger, more confidence-inspiring ‘footprints’, providing golfers with a high, softer-landing ball flight with optimum carry distance. The next generation Shockwave Sole creates a lower centre of gravity, and allows the clubhead to contract and expand more at impact, maintaining ball speeds off the turf, increasing stability and promoting a higher ball flight. The Waffle Crown helps further by allowing even more weight low in the clubhead. The JPX EZ fairway woods benefit from a Quick Switch adjustable hosel to optimise lofts and

The S5 wedge heads are Grain Flow Forged from a single billet of 1025E Pure Select Mild Carbon steel, with the Blue IP finish promising to add a little #bluemagic to your wedge game. S5 offers the best wedge performance benefits that modern technology can bring, while still adhering to the spirit and desire that the brand has held so dear for nearly 110 years. MP-4 launch characteristics in 15˚, 18˚ and 21˚ lofts (a fixed hosel version is also available), while the JPX EZ hybrids are available in a fixed hosel model only in lofts of 16˚, 19˚, 22˚ and 25˚. Mizuno has long held an enviable industry and tour-wide reputation for crafting the finest and most versatile forged irons and wedges on the market – scoring clubs that look great, perform superbly and offer the perfect blend of feel, control and workability. For many years, the brand’s highly acclaimed wedges have helped both the world’s greatest players, and aspiring club golfers, to hit it closer more often and significantly enhance their up-anddown percentages. S5 WEDGE The brand’s latest S5 wedges have been precision-engineered to spin a little #BlueMagic into your wedge game courtesy of a stunning new Blue IP finish that’s designed to wear over time without reducing the durability of the plating itself. The S5 wedges will also be available in Mizuno’s White Satin finish, which has proved extremely popular for many years now. For a wedge to play right, it also has to look right, and the S5’s score so highly here. The S5’s boast an enticing midsize profile, with sharply visible and highly versatile sole grinds. The profile and sole grinds combine with a slightly rounded leading edge that allows the wedges to be opened or closed while still aligned to target for maximum adaptability. The demands of full-wedge and greenside shots are very different, a fact not lost on Mizuno’s expert designers. The S5 wedges are designed to provide high spin right across the loft range thanks to Quad Cut Grooves, which are CNC-milled after forging to ensure every wedge sits just inside R&A and USGA limits. Wider shallower grooves from 54 to 62 degrees, and deeper narrower grooves from 49 to 53 degrees ensure maximum spin on both full and partial shots for ultimate control, feel and workability. The MP-4 is the purest of forged muscle backs for shotmakers seeking the ultimate control over their ball flight. A longer, softer sense of impact results from the MP-4’s design that extends higher up the clubface, enhancing the renowned feel of its Grain Flow Forged construction. The muscle bulge is most prominent in the scoring irons and reduces down through to the slender long irons, where design emphasis is placed on creating a quick launch and steeper landing angle. The MP-4’s final profile was created through a combination of CAD design and traditional craftsmanship.
