Welcome... While the world remains in chaos, its good to see the courses are packed and golf participation is booming. The winter season is kicking off and although it is hard to plan any travel with restrictions still in place, there are some beautiful courses around the UK which are definitely worth a visit and countries abroad that are safe and should be considered. Golf ’s new World Handicap System (WHS) remains on track for implementation starting later this year, the system is designed to bring the game of golf under a single set of rules for handicapping and provide a more consistent measure of players’ ability between different regions of the world, check back in the next edition for a full run down on how this will affect you. Featured in this edition we tee off with County Secretary, Steve McNeill; David Boote gets back on course and PGA Professional Sam Truman explains how to progress your game in the colder months. Enjoy our guide to some of the best UK courses to play during the winter months or visit Wales where courses are among the best in the world. Not too far afield, we visit Mons, Belgium where the courses are set in the heart of nature making social distancing easy.

COUNTY TALK

ON THE

TEE with County Secretary

STEVE MCNEILL

A

nother season was nearly upon us, when the world suddenly turned upside down with the arrival of Covid-19. Not wanting to go into the ups and downs of how the pandemic has affected the entire country, all I would say to everyone is stay safe and do the right thing to protect yourselves and family. As for the golf industry from believing it would be catastrophic for clubs it has turned out to be anything but, with so many reporting a huge influx of new members and green fees, it is simply incredible. The challenge now is to keep these new members. As for the county many of the events and matches had to be cancelled, however we have managed to recommence the knockout competitions, that will now run through the winter with the finals to

ye Goodb Jane

take place in March/April 2021. The County Championships have now been rescheduled, albeit in a reduced format and numbers and entry forms can be found on our website. And finally, some of the ever-popular County Card events, which for those who are not aware is effectively a County Golf Society for any adult male who has a handicap and is affiliated to Surrey County Golf. All the details for these can be found on the Surrey website. During this time Jane Duhart a stalwart and much respected team member of the Surrey County Golf Office for the past 16 years decided to hang up her telephone and computer to take a well-deserved early retirement. providing her the opportunity to spend more time with her family, who live

in various parts of the world and her hobbies. As Jane herself says “with friends and family living all over Mexico and my daughter in Zurich, spending time with them has now become my priority while (or better said when) I can still hop nimbly onto a plane again and do so without a Zimmer frame...!” Jane started with the County in 2004, witnessed many changes, supported several county secretary’s, and made many, many friends, and acquaintances. I know a lot of you will miss Jane’s wicked sense of humour along with the infamous Friday fun emails she was renowned for sending out. In the same way they do with players shirt numbers when they retire, we have decided to retire the Friday fun emails, they simply would not be the same! We at Surrey Golf would like to express our heartfelt thanks for Jane’s hard work and support during her time with the county, as I’m sure the many players and club managers who have spoken to Jane over the years do and I hope you will join the Surrey family in wishing her the happiest of retirements. May your drives be straight, your approaches pinpoint and your putts holed. If you would like any further information on any of the above, please visit the Surrey County Golf website www.surreygolf.org, or give the office a ring 01483 755788

COURSE IMPROVING ALL THE TIME!

Word about the quality of Purley Downs Golf Club is spreading...

P

urley Downs Golf Club was recently hailed in Golf Monthly for continual improvement of the course, especially the greens, former Ryder Cup Paul McGinley has praised the course, Surrey Golf chose it for the 2018 County Under-18 and 2019 County Amateur Championships, and, last year, Jack Nicklaus was so impressed with the club that he sent a special video message for its 125th anniversary. What makes the club special to these people – and more – is its downland course which, being on chalk, drains freely. As a result, in the wretchedly wet winter of 2019-2020, when some

10

courses were shut for weeks, Purley Downs was closed for only three days. As with all clubs, the Covid lockdown period was a worrying time. But thanks to the explosion of interest in golf, Purley Downs has seen a big jump in membership. This was aided by its policy of welcoming members of the public to walk the course during lockdown. Quite a few applied to join saying: “We’ve driven past your front door many times, but had no idea it was so beautiful.” Many of these are now fitting into one of the club’s numerous swindles, competitions and private social media groups to arrange games. The Ladies and Seniors sections are famous for their size and vigour, and there are thriving academies for all ages.

Finally, if your golf game is a little off, there is now a large indoor teaching studio. If it’s really off, you can always just enjoy the wildlife. Deer, red kites, and buzzards are invariably seen, and there is a rich flora including orchids and the rare wild tulip.

SURREY LADIES ENGLISH GIRLS’ OPEN AMATEUR STROKE PLAY

XANH WINS AFTER A DRAMATIC PLAY-OFF

O

n a final day full of drama, Davina Xanh from Mendip Spring Golf Club emerged as the English Girls’ Open Amateur Stroke Play champion. Xanh was thrilled to lift the trophy – but only after the third round was abandoned, the competition was reduced to 36 holes and she won a

dramatic play-off against Surrey’s Abbi Rowlands. The schedule for the final day at Sandy Lodge Golf Club in Hertfordshire was for 36 holes of stroke play. The tournament had already been reduced from 72 holes to 54 after play was wiped out because of rain on Tuesday. However, after the morning round was completed the intervention of thunder and lightning and heavy rain made it impossible for all the competitors to finish the third and final round. The arrival of rain and electrical activity proved to be particularly cruel on England girls’ squad player Lottie Woad. The 16-year-old from Surrey had entered her final round four behind the leaders. An early flourish of birdies at

one, three, four, five and six from Woad meant she was able to gain control of the leaderboard with a flawless front nine. As the leaders entered the back nine at around 5pm, the heavens opened, the field were called in and play was suspended. Woad held a two-shot lead over Xanh at this point and Rowland was six-over for the week after racking up six bogeys in her final round. But with the weather taking control, the course flooded and daylight fading there was no other option available but to scrap the third round and revert back to the details after 36 holes. The play-off was settled when Xanh’s tee shot landed 10 feet from the pin and she holed out while Rowlands’ birdie attempt stayed above ground.

ENGLISH WOMEN’S STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

FULLER CLAIMS A DESERVED TITLE A

nnabell Fuller has admitted she feels privileged to have been crowned English Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play champion. Rounds of 71, 68, 73 and 70 at Burnham and Berrow Golf Club left the 18-year-old six-under par for the week. Fuller – a member at Roehampton Golf Club – finished three shots clear of nearest challenger Emma Allen. Allen finished four-over in her final round and three-under par for the week. Fuller performed to a high standard in wet and windy conditions on the Somerset coast – including a 36-hole finale to the 72-hole stroke play event. Despite the challenging climate, she avoided big scores on her card, holed clutch putts and was deservedly left holding silverware after a testing day which saw the field play 36 holes. “It’s amazing, I can’t express how amazing it feels,” said the Surrey golfer. “You come up here and you never really know what will happen. Only one person wins out of 120 or so it’s a great achievement.” With torrential downpours, Fuller was one of only four players in the field who finished under par for the week. The others were Allen (-3), England and Essex player Lily May Humphreys and Gloucestershire’s Caley McGinty (both -1).

Golf OFF SEASON

How to progress your game in the colder months with PGA Professional Sam Truman It’s been a funny year of golf. But finally, we were let back out on the golf courses and the industry has been really busy ever since.

A

s the season winds down, it’s a great time to reflect on the year you’ve had. Even if you haven’t been able to play as much competitive golf, you can still analyse the casual rounds and practice sessions that you’ve been able to complete. Once you’ve successfully reflected on the golf you’ve played over the summer months, there’s a few tasks that will be

really important to work through to help maximise your golf game over the colder months: CHECK YOUR CURRENT EQUIPMENT

This is an area that most golfers neglect, and sometimes neglect for a number of years in fact. This means that select clubs in your bag get more usage than others, and subsequently more usage normally off a firm driving range mat. affected. There’s no formula for how a club can move, but any change in loft and lie can directly affect how far the ball goes, where the face points and how the club interacts with the turf. Check in with your local professional or fitting centre to arrange a loft and lie check before you starter your autumn and winter golf. TRIAL AND TEST NEW EQUIPMENT Have you had the same set of clubs for multiple seasons? Have you struggled to part with a dated set of clubs? I would encourage most golfers to try out some new equipment during the colder months. Start the process of

West Surrey SPOTLIGHT ON

Few can doubt the beauty of West Surrey’s golf course – designed by W Herbert Fowler in 1910, his other notable courses include The Berkshire and Walton Heath.

W

est Surrey Golf Club is a quiet and scenic parkland course, featuring attractive tree-lined fairways with wide and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside that is always maintained in superb condition and offers an enduring challenge to golfers of all abilities. It really is Surrey’s best kept secret.

16

Set within 220 acres of the tranquil Surrey Hills countryside, this parkland course has USGA specification greens which allow free draining, thereby creating putting surfaces of the highest quality that remain playable all year round. They are impervious to the heaviest of rainstorms and are amongst the best in this county. The watering system installed in 2002 has also enabled the greenkeeping staff to present fairways of a consistently high standard on all holes, whatever the summer weather. Over the last four years the club has invested in hole improvements and bunker upgrades working with renowned course architect Ken Moodie. The careful changes implemented over the last few years have only added to the character of

the course and have strengthened the 6424-yard par 71 layout. Slope ratings for the White and Red tees is 128 and for the Yellow tees is 124. The boundary of the estate is framed by open farmland running as far as the eye can see and this, combined with no main roads, railway nor any flightpath, means that peace and tranquillity reign as you enjoy your round. The course itself winds slowly upwards towards its highest point 440 feet above sea level, around the 16th tee. From there, apart from a teasing climb to the 17th, it begins a gentle descent back to the clubhouse. The view from the 18th tee down to the clubhouse and over to the Hogs Back is one to remember. The club itself has everything a member would want. A very welcoming,

PSYCHOLOGY

CHANGE YOUR PHYSIOLOGY, AND THE WAY YOU FEEL! LEARN TO CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONAL GAME

A quick fix to feeling confident with Jamie Burrows, golf psychologist and mindset coach

W

hen we experience emotions our brain chemistry changes which in turn triggers physiological changes. For example, when we feel threatened or worried, our brains trigger what is known as the ‘fight or flight response’. Adrenaline and cortisol are produced and released into the bloodstream. These stress hormones cause our bodies to undergo several, rapid physiological changes. Our heart rate increases, our breathing rates increase and our muscles tighten – the body prepares for either fight or flight. These changes ensure we are at our peak physical condition to meet the threat.

By taking on the physical characteristics of confidence, we can trick our brains into producing the necessary brain chemistry to feel confident.

For thousands of years, the fight or flight response has been highly beneficial to humans – it has kept us safe from predators. But when we are playing golf and begin to feel fearful or stressed, this response is extremely unhelpful. Tightened muscles and higher breathing is not what we need when we need to hit a narrow fairway or hole a vital 4 footer. The sequence is experience threat – chemicals released – physiology changes. But it also works backwards! Just as our brain chemistry directly impacts our physiology, our physiology can also impact our brain chemistry. Studies show when people who do not experience anxiety mimic the physical

characteristics of an anxious person, shoulders hunched forward, arms held in front of them, head down with short, shallow breathing, their levels of cortisol and adrenalin increase. Whilst mimicking the physiology of someone confident. Shoulders back, feet apart, chin up with low deep breathing, reduces stress chemicals and increase the levels of serotonin, a chemical that makes us feel happy. By taking on the physical characteristics of confidence, we can trick our brains into producing the necessary brain chemistry to feel confident. TRY IT FOR YOURSELF... Take a few minutes to think about what your physiology is like when you’re at your most confident (it doesn’t have to be on the course). Where are your shoulders in relation to your ears, are you relaxed, how is your breathing and where are you breathing from, is there anything else in your body that you can notice? Now you’re aware of what confident physiology is for you, when you’re feeling stressed, fearful, under-pressure, or anything that isn’t confident, simply take on your physiology of confidence and notice how you feel differently. If you are looking to take your golf to the next level by improving your mental approach to the game, sign up to my 12 stage online Golf Psychology Coaching Programme at jamieburrowsgolf.com/onlinecoaching-package

BACK ON COURSE! THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER DURING AND POST-LOCKDOWN David Boote

As with most people, it has been a difficult time for us professional golfers over the past few months. With a global sporting lockdown and many countries issuing travel restrictions, the usual circus of the golf tours has meant there have been no competitive professional golf since February. The Tour has been very cautious in its return to golf, keeping the players, caddies and staff safe from the Covid-19 virus. Thankfully, we are now back to playing competitive golf and in July we were playing in Austria where there were two co-sanctioned

20

events between the Challenge and European tours. Austria has had very few cases recently, but there were still strict rules and testing procedures at both events. To get into Austria in the first place we needed proof of a negative COVID test within 96 hours prior to arrival. We were also tested before the event and not allowed on site until we had tested negative. We were also tested in between the two events. Having a cotton swab stuck up your nose and in the back of the throat is not the most comfortable feeling but, in the end, nobody tested

positive and the whole two weeks felt very safe. It was nice in the evenings to eat out in restaurants and catch up with some my golfing friends-something we were only just coming to terms within the UK at the time. It felt great to get back to competitive golf, and it certainly beats hitting balls into a net in the garden which was my reality during the lockdown! The lockdown did have its positives, and gave me a chance to rest up and work on my technique in a period of time where I could work on some

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

PRO TALK

technical aspects without having to get ready for any upcoming tournaments. The time ended up being very useful and my swing is in a better place now than it was before the lockdown. I was a tad slow in looking into golf nets online so ended up throwing an old carpet and two rugs over a set of goal posts to hit shots into. Whilst this did the job well, one would have to assume that Rory Mcllroy was probably better prepared for the lockdown. Anyway, apart from a couple of stray balls my family was relatively safe! The one thing tougher to work on

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

was my short game, which is normally one of the sharpest parts of my game. I did plenty of chipping in the garden, but there is no substitute for chipping onto a real green surface and judging how the ball will react. This was noticeable post-lockdown, but luckily, I was able to put a lot of work in at my home club, Walton Heath. My short game still wasn’t as sharp as I’d want it on my return to competitive golf in Austria, and that cost me a few shots, but it was fun competing again and being back out there battling with my peers. I finished

tied 44th in the Austrian Open and then tied 39th in the Euram Bank Open. It was positive to make both cuts and get 8 competitive rounds under my belt. Our next event on the Challenge tour is the Northern Ireland Open. We then have a good run of events planned, including another cosanctioned event at the Open de Portugal in September. @davidboote123

YEARS OF ‘GOLF PAIN’...GONE! When 64-year-old keen golfer, Chris Kirk was assessed at the Back and Joint Pain Centre in Caterham, for lower back and foot pain, that was ruining his golf, the last thing he expected was to be told both issues were caused by the faulty posture in his feet!

C

hris’s golfing buddy and friend had suggested seeing Dr Les Bailey, a leading physical therapist, as he had resolved the almost identical issues for him some months previously. He looked at the clinic website and was encouraged by reading over 400 testimonials from past patients. Visiting the clinic and Dr Bailey seeing his general posture and foot gait, within seconds Dr Bailey accurately showed HIM where the pain was. Past practitioners he had seen had only ever temporarily treated symptoms, this time he was treated for the cause. He was prescribed the clinics specialist prescription orthotics, using a method honed over 35 years’ experience in the field, by Dr Les Bailey. “After a short period of wearing them in my usual shoes and golf shoes and a little treatment, I went to the driving range. I hit 300 balls and had absolutely no problems with my back, either then or the following day, before I would have been ‘stiff as a board’ for at least two days afterwards!

22

I’m now hitting the ball further, as my swing feels so much easier and more flexible. The foot orthotics are working really well, I don’t have any more pain, even after four hours around the golf course carrying my clubs! I’m definitely enjoying my golf so much more now. Before I just got used to the aches and pains and assumed

I’d have to put up with these given my ripe old age of 64! I didn’t realise how debilitating this was, especially, on the back 9 holes. I would struggle with my swing because my side or back ached, or I’d find it painful to walk, which meant I lost concentration and invariably, my score suffered over the closing holes. Les helped me so much.”

Dr Les Bailey has over 42 years experience in the physical therapy field. He treats all types of musculoskeletal issues, with patients ranging from age three to over 90. He is the author of the best selling book The Layman’s Guide To Foot and Heel Pain and has appeared on television and in the national press with his unique work in foot biomechanics. The clinic offers, manipulation, shockwave, shortwave, laser, ultrasound, interferential, biomechanics and orthotics, NLP/hypnotherapy, sports massage and acupuncture. GET BACK INTO THE

SWING OF THINGS IN MONS, BELGIUM

Royal GC du Hainaut @ Gregory Mathelot

Feel like you could do with a golf break? A nice little trip with your friends somewhere safe? How about a place with a couple of championship courses, epic green landscape, good food, plenty of ‘after golf refreshments’ and even some culture – if your friend insists...?

I

f the answer is yes then consider the town of Mons. It’s the perfect option for getting back into the swing of things, post lockdown. Travelling by car is one of the safest ways to travel. Less than two hours’ drive from Calais also means that you will have time to settle into your hotel, and plan your next two days of golf, around a couple of Belgian Beers – naturally.

Enjoy challenging courses from renowned Tom Simpson to more recent design of Tom McAuley. There’s something for every ability in the region as well as an opportunity to alternate between past and present design in one trip.

Mont Garni GC, with its immense sense of peace and harmony is the course where nature reigns supreme. The 18-hole course designed by Irish Architect Tom McAuley stretches across a varied 150-hectare estate is surrounded by rich woodland (par 73, length 6,331 m). It is one of the longest in Belgium. The first and last 6 holes are located in the woods, whereas the other 6 are in fields. Even

SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE

the most experienced are challenged by the trees and large ponds that push you to the limits of your game. Royal Hainaut GC was first set up by one of the best international architects, the original and eccentric Tom Simpson. Old and new design combine perfectly to offer two generations of golf in one day. It provides 27 challenging holes that dip and wind

through peaceful woodland offering three nine-hole loops translating into three terrains: ‘Les Bruyères’ (heather); ‘Le Quesnoy’ and ‘Les Etangs’ (Ponds). Accuracy not length is the key to doing well here with the aim to keep the balls out of pines trees and undulating heathland as well as the challenge of accurate driving in the hillier areas and sand traps.

REVIEW

CLEAN YOUR BALLS... I love to play golf and for as long as I have there’s always been one universal problem... clean balls! I normally find myself on the putting surface marking my ball, then look at it and inspect for dirt. Here lies the dilemma that every golfer has faced, you see dirt. There’s a few options... wiping the ball down your trousers or the old ‘lick and wipe’ technique has always been a firm favourite, but with chemicals and God knows what on the greens and the fond memory of the sign by the first tee at Woodcote Park GC that read “don’t lick your balls” from my junior days, etched in my brain, these options are best left in the past. Do I leave the putting surface with ball in hand and wander back to my bag/trolley and use the towel? But, that’s 40 yards away and I’m to putt first! Or do I just casually throw the

ball to my caddy and let him clean it and throw it back? Now, I have never had a caddy in my life and let’s face it, you most likely don’t either. At last I have another option and one that isn’t going to cost me 10% of my winnings from the Saturday swindle with the lads. Caddyboo is here to help save the day with a convenient handy size wallet that fits neatly in your pocket. It contains a small microfibre towel and brush – no longer will I be frantically scraping with my finger nail trying in vain to remove a mark. This innovation is brilliantly designed and super handy, just wet the microfibre towel, squeeze out the excess water and away you go. The wetness remains inside the wallet and is on hand for every time you need it, along with a handy little brush that’s fused with the wallet for the most

stubborn of ground in dirt. It even has a magnetic section to attach your ball marker. If only it carried my golfbag! A ‘must’ purchase accessory. RRP £27, on offer at £18.92 www.caddyboo.co

ELECKTROCLEAN’S ANTI-VIRAL SOLUTION

T

he scale and impact of the COVID-19 crisis are unprecedented, and it remains unclear how long the COVID threat will affect the way we run our clubs and facilities. Indeed, some scientists are saying we could be well into 2021 before it dissipates. Even without COVID, there are many dangerous and debilitating viruses which spread quickly in shared spaces, such as gastroenteritis, Hepatitis A, E.coli, influenza, chickenpox and meningitis. Can we rely on others to keep the ‘new normal’ up once the Coronavirus takes a back seat? According to ‘Statista’, 68% of golfers are over 50, and 42% of those are over 60, so we have to consider that many members may fall into the vulnerable category, which

puts management teams under even more pressure to create anti-virus environments. Facilities beyond the course itself, such as changing rooms, the clubhouse and restaurants are a significant pull for members as well as substantial revenue streams for the clubs. Club managers are now faced with the task of finding non-toxic, eco-friendly anti-viral protections for these high-traffic areas. Mick Nelson, of Elecktroclean, who has developed a 90-day anti-viral solution which combines electrostatic application with a world-class antimicrobial coating, says “there are so many alternatives on the market, it can be daunting for managers to find reliable, safe and affordable options. It is important to verify the solutions toxicity and waste disposal

requirements, alongside its resilience, especially for heavy use touchpoints.” Woodcote Park Golf Club is one of many who have taken a stand against viruses with the elecktroclean solution. General Manager, Michael O’Brien, says “in both product and service elecktroclean offer excellence. It gives my team and members extra peace of mind.
