What a busy Summer across Surrey. We have crowned many new champions, congratulations to all, especially Lottie Woad, smashing another win to become the R and A Girls amateur champion – an outstanding victory.

A special mention in this edition goes to Gerry Murphy, who is hanging up his boots after 40 years of service to the Surrey Schools Golf Association. Thank you Gerry for all your hard work and enjoy some well earned time off!

Well, just where has the time gone? it was only the other week I was talking about the upcoming 2023 season! Mind you what a great season the Surrey teams are having.

The U14’s have yet again made it to the Southeast Group League Final where they will play Middlesex and Hertfordshire. Over the years, Surrey have been very successful in this league, winning it more times than any other county. Some of these youngsters will go on to represent Surrey in various teams right up to the pinnacle of county golf, playing in the England Golf Six-man Qualifier for the National County Finals.

Which brings me nicely onto the mens 1st team who have qualified for

this year’s National Finals by winning the Southeast Group section against 10 other counties at Bury St Edmonds, not an easy task and the first time we have achieved this since 2014. What made it even more special for me was the fact the six players in our team had all come through the Surrey U14 RookieTour, something I was heavily involved with when I was a volunteer with the county. I could not have been any prouder!

The mens team were undefeated in winning their SEG League and now play Essex in the final, there is a lot of strength in depth within this squad and with so many matches and competitions we take part in we need it.

The U16 team which is crammed with up-and-coming quality players have also won their SEG league undefeated and take on Hertfordshire and Essex in the triple final.

Not to be left out, the Surrey Seniors have won through to the SEG Foursomes final, after only just missing out on reaching their Six-Man National Final, by a couple of shots.

Well done and good luck to all the teams. I will update you in the next edition, hopefully with lots of good news!

Thinking about next year, 2023 is the Surrey Centenary, which I will talk about in more detail in the Spring edition. But suffice to say there will be events and various special competitions we will be running to celebrate 100 years since the formation of the Surrey Golf Union, not least a Pro-Am with many ex-Surrey Professionals taking part.

May your drives be straight, your approaches be close, and your putts holed.

TOM HAWKINGS FROM SUNNINGDALE WINS THE SURREY SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2023 Seniors Championship was held at the Richmond Golf Club over two days.

After the first round the leading scores were WHS Jackson (Woking) and Tom Hawkins (Sunningdale) both shooting an excellent 69, 1 under par, closely followed by Nigel Pimm (Surbiton) and Ian Attoe (Worplesdon) with solid 72’s, with several players a further one or two shots further back. Meaning there would be a good mix of players in contention for the Championship in the second round.

As it should be, on the second round the leading players would go out at the back of the field.

Adrian Mitchell (Royal Mid-Surrey) came in with a fine two over par 72 improving on his first round of 75 for a 147 total and the clubhouse lead, however this was pushed back when previous winner of the Championship Keith Waters (West Byfleet) matched his second round of 72 to go with a 74 for a combined 146.

Joint first round leader WHP Jackson could not match his previous days score coming in with a 76 for a 145 total which was only good enough for 4th place, losing out 3rd place on countback to Nigel Pimm who had a 73 to go with his 72 for to also finish on 145.

Ian Attoe had the best second round score with a level par 70 to put him in top spot with a combined 142, this overall total was matched by Tom Hawkins who putted out for a 73 to go with his 69. So, it would be a play of, this would be sudden death using the 1st & 18th holes.

And it was Tom Hawkins who prevailed with a superb birdie on the first play off hole, an excellent finish to what had been a quality event at a quality venue. Many of the players commented on the excellent condition of course, especially the greens.

PETER FROM ROEHAMPTON WINS MID-AGE CHAMPIONSHIP

Thursday 16th June saw 39 players head out onto fairways at Malden GC in search of victory at the Surrey MidAge Championship 2022.

With the sun beaming down on players at over 30 degrees, it was clear that the day would be a real test of golf and character. Thick rough lined the fairways and offered nothing but trouble if a player were to miss a fairway.

Prizes: 3rd Place – David Primrose (Sutton Green) 144 (+2). 2nd Place –Andrew Cooley (Chobham) 143 (+1) 1st Place – Peter Crocombe (Roehampton) 141 (-1)

CHARLIE CROCKETT WINS SURREY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2022 County Championships were held at West Byfleet Golf Club over the weekend of June 27th to 29th.

The 36 hole qualifying on day one produced some excellent golf. Charlie Crockett (Addington Palace) led the pack with a score of 137 (-3), just ahead of his Surrey team mate Aadam Syed (Foxhills) on 139, these being the only players to better par.

By the conclusion of the semi finals, Charlie Crockett would face David Primrose (Sutton Green) in the final.

The final set off in front of a large number of spectators and Charlie again got off to a fast start getting to 2up after 5 holes with excellent birdies on the 2nd and 5th, his lead could have been bigger had Will not holed several putts for halved holes.

Will pulled himself back level in the match with birdies on the 7th and 8th and hit the front for the first time with a par 4 on the 9th after an errant drive from Charlie. Will gave the lead on the 10th with a rare 3 putt, the next 2 holes being shared with regulation pars.

Charlie 3 putted the 13th hole with Will in close on the beautiful par 3 hole.

The match was level again after an excellent approach from Charlie for a birdie on the 14th.

A rare missed fairway from Will on the 15th allowed Charlie to 2 putt for a win as Will could only pitch out to the fairway narrowly missing the par putt after a nice wedge from 100yds.

Both missed the 16th fairway to the right and shared the hole in bogey.

Both players hit the 17th green from the tee, Will being slightly further away in regulation, although both players came up short with Will to putt first. In true match play style that could have gone either way, Will missed from around 6ft and Charlie holed from 5ft to take the title.

This was one of the most exciting championships in Surrey history with two hole-in-ones, a course record and a 3-man play-off for the U16 title.

The course was in fantastic condition, with Pyrford Lakes staff working tirelessly in the build up to ensure perfection was reached. And it was!

After round one, four players were under par with Ollie George leading the field with a 68 (-4), followed by Reggie Fear and Oscar Lent on 70 (-2) but hot on their heels was Peter Alliss Champion Monty Holcombe with a 71 (-1).

Round two would proved to be one of the most eventful rounds of any Surrey Championship. It all started when Thomas Dowling bagged himself a hole-in-one on the par 3 6th.

Daniel Prince made the turn at -4 and then proceeded to make the 2nd hole-in-one of the championships to go -6 through 10. The course record stood at 66 (-6) and Daniel found himself -8

stood on the 17th tee. An unfortunate bounce into the water led to a double bogey, but a great wedge into 18 left him a 3-footer for the new record! With nerves of steel, he rolled it in.

Oscar Lent was the lowest in the clubhouse, returning a final round of 69 (-3) to take him to a total of -5. Anticipation was growing as the final group made their way down the 18th. From the final group, Ollie George carded a 71 (-1) to take him to -5 total and Monty Holcombe carded a superb 68 (-4) to also take him -5 for the championship. The play-off was to be held over holes 10, 11 and 12 in a sudden death format.

Ollie George teed off first and handled the nerves well, hitting his ball 15 feet from the flag. Oscar was next up, pulling his shot slightly left, with a firm bounce, found himself in the knee high rough. Monty also stumbled and caught the bunker at the front of the green.

With the pressure on, Oscar hit a phenomenal wedge from the rough, finishing 4 feet from the hole. Unfortunately, Monty was unable to make an up and down from the bunker and his hopes of the trophy were fading.

With Oscar looking like a certain 3, the pressure was on Ollie once again. The spectators went silent as the ball made its way towards the hole, the ball dropped and with a simultaneous fist pump from Ollie, the trophy was his!

OSCAR LENT & OLLIE GEORGE WIN SURREY U15 & U16 CHAMPIONSHIPS AT PYRFORD LAKES WOODHAM WINS THE U18 CHAMPIONSHIP WITH LEO VOROBYEV WINNING THE U17’S

With the recent warm weather the ball was difficult to keep on the fairways and it is fair to say a few balls were lost, but this didn’t stop some excellent scores being submitted with Nathan Woodham leading the way with an excellent 2 under par, giving him a 3 shot lead heading into the 2nd round.

After an excellent lunch, which we’ve come to expect at Tandridge, the players went out hoping to better their scores from the morning round.

Leo Vorobyev would be leader in the clubhouse after round 2, posting solid back to back 72’s. Nathan would manage to hold his lead, posting a 2nd round 74 giving him a total of 143 (+1).

After a late surge, Freddie Surgey finished with a 2nd round 70 which landed him in 3rd place.

WILLIE WOODS CLAIMS CHRISTY TROPHY

Tuesday 21st June saw 66 players enjoy the fantastically presented course at West Byfleet Golf Club. Players took to the course in glorious sunshine battling it out for the Christy Trophy. The course was presented in immaculate condition, combined with the fantastic weather it made for an amazing day of golf. The format for the day was singles stableford played from the yellow tees, with nearest the pins on the 4th and 13th. Congratulations to Willie Woods on winning the Christy Trophy.

AARON MOODY WINS U13 & U14 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The U13 & U14 County Championships were held at Dulwich & Sydenham Hill Golf Club on Sunday 12th June.

The players arrived to glorious sunshine and spectacular views of London. There was a two tee start, and the players were started off by Club Captain George and committee member John and our thanks to both.

The course proved tricky for the boys, especially around the greens, and with the breeze coming into play, made it a true test for the players.

Congratulations to all the players especially Aaron for winning both championships.

WEST SURREY DUO CLAIM FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP

The first day consisted of 36 holes foursomes stroke play with the top four pairs qualifying for the knockout stages the following day.

West Surrey was playing in amazing condition, with the greens unbelievable.

After the first day, the qualifiers for the knockout stages were:

1st: Peter Crocombe and Max Stanley (Roehampton) – 147

2nd: Mark Davis and Archibald Wells (Guildford) – 151

3rd: James Boyle and Christopher Matthews (West Surrey) – 153

4th: Neil Manwaring and Stuart J White (Tyrrells Wood) – 154

The first semi-final of day two was Peter Crocombe and Max Stanley vs Neil Manwaring and Stuart White. This was a well fought match which saw Peter and Max hold a solid 3 & 2 victory to book their spot in the final. Match number two was Chris Matthews and James Boyle vs Mark Davis and Archie Wells. This was an extremely close match with Chris and James stealing the victory on the 19th hole.

The final was set to be an interesting match with both pairs posting low scores in the qualifying stage. Although, in the case, home knowledge proved vital as Chris and James sprinted to a 6 & 4 victory over Peter and Max.

Surrey managed to qualify this year, after just edging out our close rivals, Sussex.

The final was played in great spirit, against the other two qualifying counties, Hertfordshire and Middlesex.

Surrey came out of the gates fast, winning 6 out of the first 7 matches vs Hertfordshire and winning 5 out of the first 7 vs Middlesex. After that start, the tail end solidified the victory with a few very well earned points. The final scores were: Surrey vs Hertfordshire – Win 7.5 – 2.5 Surrey vs Middlesex – Win 8 – 2

A great win for the Surrey U14’s who have retained the League Final Shield for a second year! WIN SEG LEAGUE FINAL!

SURREY PAIRING WIN ENGLAND GOLF TRUST CUP

After the recent heatwave and drought, the weather broke just in time for the 2022 finals to take place at the excellent King’s Norton Golf Club near Birmingham.

With heavy rain affecting the later starters and causing a delay in play, it was tough going for the 28 teams that made it through to the muchanticipated finals day.

However, the course at King’s Norton – one of the country’s finest parkland venues stood up to the deluge.

The players battled gainfully through the conditions with the winning pair from Surrey delighted to take the victory in this four ball better ball competition with 45 Stableford points.

After the win, Florence said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have won this event – it was superbly organised and despite some slightly iffy weather it was a real delight to take part.

“We both came through our respective handicap section at our club qualifier and were put as a team for this final having

not played together for five years. But something clicked on the day.”

Kari, who has a handicap index of 22.7 compared to her partner’s index of 16.7, added: “It was a day when we just worked well together and the highlight for me was making a four on a par five and earning the team five points!

“I’d just echo everything that Florence has said. It’s been a splendid day despite the rain, we enjoyed our game with two players from Lincolnshire and it’s great to have been a part of this event which does such great work for charity.”

The finals day was the culmination of a qualifying process which allowed winners from women’s Stableford competitions across 108 clubs in England to be eligible for the King’s Norton event. The leading 28 pairs were invited to play in the final.

The legendary Bridget Jackson MBE presented the cup, which she donated to the England Golf Trust, along with two crystal bowls. The latter is for the winners to keep in commemoration

of their win while the winning pair also received a golf bag each donated by PING who also provided other prizes on the day.

Di Horsley, Chair of the Trust, commented: “I’d like to thank all the players and clubs who have taken part in this year’s competition as their support will make a real different to the lives of young people, and to help spread the word of the work of the England Golf Trust”.

The England Golf Trust (EGT) is an independent charity that provides grants, bursaries and equipment from PING to young golfers of all ages and abilities who need financial support to develop and enjoy the game.

The Trust receives no public funded money but, thanks to a network of generous individuals and organisations, has supported 170 young golfers with more than £123,000 of funding.

Florence Smith and Kari James from Effingham Golf Club emerged slightly soggy but proud with their victory at the finals of 2022 Women’s England Golf Trust Stableford Championship.

15 year old succeeds at first visit to Liphook

The Liphook Scratch Cup puts Liphook Golf Club firmly on the England National golfing fixture list each year and never more so than in this year of the club’s centenary.

A field of 54 of the best players in the country lined up to play the yellow course – the youngest aged 13 and 27 players with handicaps at or below scratch. This provided for a very close finish.

Playing Liphook for the first time, nothing deterred 15 year-old Matilde Santilli (-1) from Foxhills. She won the cup with rounds of 74 & 72 for a 36 hole total 146. Isabella Kent (-3) from Castle Royle was second on 148

30TH LIPHOOK SCRATCH CUP SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

(75,73) on a countback from the Surrey County Champion Rebecca Gee (-1) also on 148 (75,73) from Hindhead. In fourth place was Millie Cottrell from Wentworth on 150 (76,74), a countback from Jess Haines, Burnham & Berrow (74,76).

SURREY JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Surrey Junior Championship was held at Fulwell Golf Club on 1st June. 26 junior girls competed in the championship, a 36 hole medal, with an 18 hole medal for the U13 players. It was great to see a cross-section of abilities – handicaps ranged from 0 up to 30.1. The youngest competitor was just 6 years old! Emily Peaford (Walton Heath) swept the trophy board, winning the scratch trophy and nett cup, plus the Under 15 and Under 13 trophies with her score of 147 gross/143 nett.

SUMMER SUCCESSES FOR SURREY PLAYERS

Other Surrey players have had their share of success during the summer. Ava Bates became the first girl to win the Wentworth Junior Club Championship.

European Team championship in Iceland, where England were beaten in the semi-finals.

Ellen Yates (West Hill) played for the victorious England team in the Home Internationals at Downfield in Dundee. She was also part of the England Girls’ team at the COUNTY GOLF ROUND UP SUMMER 2022

Millie Cottrell (Wentworth) represented Wales at the Home Internationals. Aimi Bullock (Bletchingley) was selected to play for the English team at the European Disability Team Championship. The team came third at the event, which was won by Ireland.

Afield of 60 ladies played in the 18 hole strokeplay competition on June 23rd. Belinda Pope (Hindhead) won the main prize with an impressive score of 74.

Home player Tracy Rowe (Hankley Common) had a wonderful round of 76, playing well under her handicap to win the nett prize.

Surrey players star at South Region All Age Championships Sarah Wilmore (Worplesdon), Annabel Peaford (Walton Heath) and Ellie Monk (Sunningdale) walked off with the majority of the trophies in the South Region All Age Championships at Ealing on the 5th August.

Sarah Wilmore was the overall Champion, with a 36 hole gross score of 151. She also won the Nett prize. Ellie Monk was second overall and won the Under 18 Scratch Trophy.

Annabel Peaford won gross and nett prizes for the Under 16, Under 14 and Under 13s with her score of 159. Unsurprisingly, Surrey won the county shield for the best three nett scores!

LOTTIE WINS

R&A CROWN WITH A CARNOUSTIE MASTERCLASS

The England international blew away the challenge from Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio to win today’s 36-hole showdown over the famous Carnoustie Golf Links by a margin of 7&6.

Woad was 2up following the morning round after completing her 18 holes in three under par – but really went into overdrive in the afternoon session.

The 18-year-old closed out the match with a nerveless eight-foot birdie putt on the 12th green taking her to six under par through those 12 holes.

The Surrey golfer was simply too hot for her Spanish rival to handle in every aspect of the game.

Woad’s ball-striking, skill around the green and her composure under pressure allowed her to dominate her shellshocked

rival who, far from playing poorly, was also under par for both rounds when the match came to an end.

Woad actually fell behind in the morning round after Garcia-Poggio birdied the fourth hole and it looked as if the golfer from Madrid had settled into her rhythm quicker than her opponent from Surrey.

But after drawing level with an eagle

Lottie Woad produced a golfing exhibition of the highest quality to sink her Spanish opponent and claim an outstanding victory in the final of The R&A’s Girls’ Amateur Championship.

It’s great to finish my junior career with this win

on the sixth hole – the notorious ‘Hogan’s Alley’ – Woad never looked back.

A birdie two on the eighth hole put her ahead and the lead was doubled with another birdie on the 13th.

After lunch, Woad was in unstoppable form. A bogey at the opening hole from the Spaniard handed Woad another hole and it was soon clear that there was only going to be one winner.

A hat-trick of birdies from the fourth hole put Woad in cruise control and knocked the stuffing out of her opponent.

Another three birdies in succession from the 10th allowed Woad to close out the match.

Watched on by proud dad Nick, mum Rachel and sister Millie, Woad admitted that she was thrilled to follow in the footsteps of one of her idols, Georgia Hall, and lift the girls’ title.

She said: “I don’t think it will sink in for a while, but I’m very happy.

“I’m lost for words – I couldn’t remember how many holes I was up and I wasn’t sure if the putt on 12 was for the match – I just tried to hole it!”

Having started the year in the England girls’ squad following on from a 2021 campaign that saw her win both the England Golf Girls’ and the Women’s Orders of Merit, Woad earned a promotion to the women’s team for the European Team Championships.

As a rookie she showed her quality by holing the winning putt in the gold match against Italy at Conwy.

“Winning the gold medal at the Europeans with England was the highlight of my career but this might top it now,” added Woad.

“It’s been a good year with a busy run of events. I’m glad to finish it off with victory in I think my last junior event.”

Woad also helped England’s men’s and women’s team claim victory in the Home Internationals at Ballyliffin.

Woad now heads to America to begin her college career at Florida State University, but has one last team appearance to make before the end of the 2022 campaign.

The eagerly anticipated team event saw a selection of the world’s best club professionals represent the PGAs of Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and America as they went head to head in a Ryder Cup format for the Llandudno International Trophy.

After successfully holding the prestigious event in 2017, the Surrey resort became only the second Great Britain & Ireland venue in the PGA Cup’s 49-year history to be chosen twice, following the lead of 2006 Ryder Cup host venue, The K Club in Ireland (1992 and 2005).

The Americans got off to a flying start, opening up a three-point lead after day one, and never seemed to look back.

Day two started with an early glimpse of hope for GB&I as they rallied through with signs of a comeback in the morning, cutting the deficit to two after the fourballs, but team USA proved too strong in the foursomes as they opened the gap back up to three points as Saturday drew to a close.

Despite a good start in several of the day’s early singles matches, the tone was set in the opening contest as GB&I’s Ashley Mansell relinquished a four-hole lead with six to play as American Michael Block recorded five birdies in the final six holes to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Although Adam Keogh, Daniel Whitby-Smith and Greig Hutcheon were able to put some blue on the board for team GB&I, defeat in a further four matches with two halved saw the United States run out comfortable 15.5 to 10.5 winners over DJ Russell’s team.

The victory is the first the US team, led by PGA of America Honorary President Suzy Whaley, has won on away soil since 2009.

More than 70 Foxhills members volunteered throughout the week to ensure the smooth-running of the competition, with everything from scorers, scoreboard holders, ball watchers, range helpers, buggy drivers

for players and many more roles you’d expect at a professional tournament.

A MENTAL GAME WARM UP TO PLAY YOUR BEST GOLF

A round of golf doesn’t start on the first tee. By the time you get to hit your first shot, you should already be in your best competitive mindset and ready to play: David MacKenzie gives suggestions for a mental game warm-up that can be done in less than 20 minutes and is well worth the time spent.

BREATHE AND RELAX

It’s normal to feel nervous before a round, which is why it’s important to include exercises which prevent those nerves becoming anxiety and tension. Spend a few minutes doing deep belly breathing exercises which relax the body and mind and make you aware of any tension.

BE GRATEFUL

You can’t feel grateful and anxious at the same time. Let’s put golf in perspective. Think of three things that you are grateful for about the upcoming round, that don’t have anything to do with your final score – this could be playing a good golf course, hitting some good shots, being outside in beautiful surroundings, being healthy enough to play, the people you are going to play with or the opportunity to learn more about your game.

By choosing to be grateful, you take some of the pressure away from having to play well to make it a success or enjoyable.

VISUALISE

Visualisation can change the way you feel and help improve performance.

Jack Nicklaus said that he attributes at least 50% of his success to having seen it in his mind before it actually happened.

When you mentally rehearse an upcoming round, you’re priming your subconscious mind to believe that it has already happened and that there is nothing to fear. When you are there for real, you will have more confidence and you are more likely to live into the experience you visualised.

Close your eyes and spend five minutes visualising some of your best moments on the course and how you want to play today (include some key shots).

DEFINE THE PLAYER YOU WANT TO BE

What is your ‘Player Identity’? The students I work with create a ‘Player Identity Statement’ and read it out loud before each round. What are the values you want to uphold and the characteristics of the player you want to be? This has nothing to do with how you will play. E.g. “I am a competitive golfer. I stay calm and focused for every shot and I am a person who is enjoyable to play with. I never give up and accept the outcome of every shot.”

Activating this side of yourself could

be done with an action such as putting on your golf shoes or cap, playing a certain type of music, or watching videos of players who exhibit these qualities. From that time on, being your Player Identity will be your primary focus.

HAVE A CLEAR STRATEGY

By planning the clubs and shots you will hit before you get to the course will take a lot of the decision making (and possible stress) away from each shot.

Working your way back from the greens to the tee boxes, plan which clubs you intend to hit for your tee shots and approaches.

Taking the time to go through your mental game warm up before you play can get you feeling more confident, lower anxiety and get you prepared for the challenges ahead.

Practice LET’S

Lots of golfers become culprits of spending far too much time on the driving range and not enough time on the golf course. And equally some golfers only ever practice on the driving range and therefore the only time they are on a golf course is when they are under far more pressure in competition.

The game of golf has so many variables to contend with and so many scenarios that we can be faced with on the golf course can never be refined or practiced on the driving range. If we can get out onto the golf course more in our spare time you’ll

reap the benefits for when it comes to then performing on the golf course in competition. Here are a few drills that can be carried out individually or can be made into games that you can use to compete against someone else:

BEST AND WORST BALL

Probably the simplest game you can play on the golf course that can measure the spread of your shots from different scenarios. Simply hit two shots on every shot down a hole. Your job is to then, depending on which format you play, either play the best or

worst ball out of the two. Do this all the way up the hole until the ball is in the hole.

Worst ball challenges your ability to minimise how wayward your shots are, and best ball is a great way to reveal how good your good golf can be and what score that can produce. Best ball also allows you to make any changes to a shot based upon the first ball that was hit.

LEARN TO MISS IT BETTER

Although this task is going to seem strange at first, it helps you form skills

How to practice your golf game on the golf course – fun, productive tasks for refining your game this season.

PGA Professional, Sam Truman, takes you through multiple games and drills that you can carry out on the course to help improve your game.

of assessing where trouble lies around the green. This task will be far easier to complete around a course that is familiar, or where you have played it at least once.

The aim of this task is to score the lowest score possible on a hole. However, standing over your par three tee shot of approach shot onto a par four, you’re going to nominate where the best place to miss the green would be. This may be in relation to where the flag is that day on the green or where the kindest chip or bunker shot may be from. You equally need

to select where the worst position would be to miss the green. This may be in a hazard, a short sided bunker or where the rough or lies could be very unpredictable.

Your job on this task is to try to purposely miss the shot in the area you decide to be the ‘good miss’. If you do so, simply carry on the hole from that position and see what you score. If your miss position was good enough the chip or bunker shot should enable you to have a chance of an up and down. If you accidentally miss your approach and it finishes on the green, you will pick the ball up and throw/roll the ball into the area you deemed the ‘bad miss’. You would then see what you can then score from that new position. If you hit your ball into the ‘bad miss’ area from your approach you would leave the ball and play it from there.

This drill is a great way of interpreting where trouble lies on the golf course and it will force you into practising your short game under pressure.

QUADRANTS

This game is a great way to learn how to aim away from a flag into a suitable area of the green that gives you the easiest chance of making a putt and the drill also helps you aim away from trouble around a green.

The game works by analysing either your approach shot on a par four or par five, or from a par three tee shot. Based upon the position of the flag

on the green and the corresponding hazards and trouble around the green you’re going to split the green complex into a large quadrant. You’ll therefore have four segments around the flag, and some of the segments may be significantly larger than others depending on where the flag is on the green.

You’re going to choose one of the segments as the ideal target segment and one other segment as the backup. And then you’ll have two segments which are the bad miss segments and in a similar way you’ll nominate one of those segments as the worst miss and the other as the backup miss.

This game can be scored in the following way:

Ball finishes in –Ideal target = +2 Points

Back up target = 0 Points

Bad miss target = -2 Points

Back up miss target = -1 Points

Once you’ve played either your nine or eighteen holes of this game count up your quadrant game score and see if it relates to a positive outcome score against the course. The more times you carry out the game you’ll start to learn how effective it is to miss the ball in a suitable place.

The games suggested above are a fantastic way of improving your course management skills and help you practice more effectively. Finding a balance between doing practice on the range and on the course will really help improve your scoring.

Since giving up team sports, most people turn to golf to remain active and keep fuelling their competitive fire however they typically fall into one of two camps:

The first camp try to kid themselves that a round of golf each week is now their exercise and they don’t need to do anything else. Some even hold this belief well into their later years.

Camp two are worried that missing out on football training during the week and a match on the weekend will make them feel old and overweight.

Regardless of which camp you’re in the typical response is to adopt a ‘go hard or go home’ mentality to exercise with those in camp two doing endless cardio and pumping iron until their blue in the face whilst the folks in camp one think..“sod all that, my golf is enough”

In both cases the efforts yield little to no reward.

You don’t have to train hard to keep fit for the golf course – but you do have to train smart

With another golf season behind us, most golfers will be thinking about how they can improve for next year with investment in lessons and the latest technology but neglect their biggest asset – how can they improve their fitness?

Here are some smart strategies you can put to use straight away during the off season to make sure you come back fitter, stronger and more flexible.

Lift weights 2-4x per week: Full body workouts are the best time saver. Three of these each week will build a more robust & resilient body that’ll have you feeling stronger & more confident over the golf ball throughout 18 holes.

Leave some reps in the tank: When choosing how heavy a weight should be, apply the two reps in the tank method. For example if you’re going for 10 reps, choose a weight that you could do 12 reps with and stop at 10.

This will help you recover better between workouts and ensure you consistently show up.

Forget about the past: Chasing what you see others doing is a recipe for disaster, and that includes the things you ‘used to do’ yourself.

You’ll be fitter and stronger in your 40s and 50s than you ever were in your 20s if you train smart and leave that ‘idiot’ behind).

In closing, regardless of your age and exercise history you’ll be smashing drives, lowering scores and hitting your potential quicker and better looking if you turn your attention to training smart rather than hard.

BABY YOU CAN LIGHT MY FIRE: LIÈGE

French speaking Wallonia, Southern Belgium is always a joy to visit. Just a couple of hours drive from Calais you reach the first hub of Mons or Waterloo. It is toll free and the green fees are great value.

With so many golf courses, I struggle to choose, but on top of that is a brilliant variety of pre- and postgame experiences to give the weekend that added oomph.

A bit further east is Liège. Known as the ‘fiery city’, the ‘Liegeois’ (locals) have the most southerly temperament, with a work hard, play hard attitude and a true ‘joie de vivre’ in the many buzzy bars and restaurants around the city.

The golf: there are half a dozen topnotch courses in this area alone.

Just a 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre, I kicked off with the 18 hole Royal Club du Sart –Tilman. This club bears all the markings of a classic 1930’s

Tom Simpson design, weaving through ancient forests and avenues of pine, beech and birch trees. Golfers with a spirit of adventure will love this course.

Golf de Liège-Gomzé – A bit further out – say half an hour drive – is in my top three places to play. Designed by Belgian architect Paul Rollin in the 80’s, landscapes of ancient woods, rolling meadows and orchards offer plenty of changes in terms of elevation, whilst the modern clubhouse offers excellent cuisine.

Finally – it’s a bit more of a trek (45 minute drive) but I would definitely put Royal Golf Club des Fagnes on your ‘must do’ list. It’s another Tom Simpson classic with a royal tag.

HANDY TIP

Head for the pedestrian area ‘Le Carre’ – 14 criss-crossed streets full of quirky and original independent shops, bars

and restaurants. Try a hearty regional plate of ‘Boulets Liégeois’. Juicy meatballs served with the sweet tasting ‘Sirop de Liège’ sauce, accompanied of course with Belgian fries. Match it with a local lager like Jupiler. Actually, there are so many different brews here you could drink for a month and still never get to the end.

Northern IrelandDISCOVER

Northern Ireland is arguably one of the finest destinations for a three day golf break, offering some of the finest golf, food/ drink and hospitality available. “Made for golf” they say!

From Belfast Airport, an hour and a half’s drive takes you to Kilkeel GC, situated at the foot of the Mourne Mountains and two miles from Kilkeel town centre.

Kilkeel is located only 12 miles from Royal County Down – a solid par 72 (6579 yard), private, parkland golf course found in good condition and certainly a good challenge for all.

The course is mature, with quality greens and fairways, a variety of doglegs, water, well placed bunkers,

rough and sloping greens with run offs that will keep you fully focused on your game while also enjoying the amazing views. A really good days golf.

Nearby is the magnificent Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle, an experience not to be missed. This is a stunning venue catering perfectly for golfers, located next to Royal County Down GC and giving minimal transfer times to many of the local courses.

The hotel serves spectacular food and is a venue that will make you feel truly special as you unwind. Should you wish to venture outside the hotel, Brunel’s restaurant in Newcastle provides a sumptuous evening meal and well worth a visit.

Off the golf course you can take an escorted e-bike ride through Castlewellan Forest Park and if you haven’t ridden a bike for a while, the ease of which the e-bike climbs steep hills is incredible and so much fun. A great way to explore and see the wonderful views – highly recommended.

Venturing up the coastal route takes you to Ardglass GC – Par 70 (6216 yard), situated on the south-east coast of County Down – one of the most scenic links courses and the highlight of my golf trip.

Right from the very first shot you are emerged in golfing heaven with a links experience those of us from Surrey dream of.

All 18 holes have incredible views across the Irish sea, with the coast coming into play on 8 of the holes. The whole setting is delightful and although not the longest of courses, when the wind blows, it will certainly be a good test of skill. If you are in this part of the world then make time to play Ardglass GC.

Finally, not to be missed is Royal Belfast GC – par 70 (6185 yard). Founded in 1881, laying claim to the title of the oldest golf club in the island of Ireland. A good parkland golf course, very undulating with strong views and in great condition.

There are some strong holes and none more so than the uphill Par 3 11th at 170 yards and a severe slope to the left of the green. Situated with stunning views of Belfast Lough.

Northern Ireland again proves to be an ideal golfing destination with hospitality like no other and golf courses that you will remember fondly.

NEW PING PUTTERS OFFER A MODEL TO FIT EVERY GOLFER

The 10 models, consisting of high moment of inertia blades and ultra-forgiving multi-material mid-mallets and mallets, are available for pre-order beginning today for £280 (UK RRP). Each model can be custom fit for stroke type, length, lie, loft and grip type.

“What’s most exciting about our new PING putter models is how different they are from each other,” said John K. Solheim, PING CEO and President. “Rather than applying one common technology to every model, our engineers took a more singular approach, applying proven innovations to different head styles to improve the performance of our most popular designs while introducing some brand-new models. For example, several of the new models offer milled faces for a firmer feel and others provide a softer feeling insert. In the blade models, which includes the Tony Finau-inspired Anser 2D design, we put a priority on delivering

high-MOI, clean-looking designs by placing tungsten weights in the heel and toe. The use of aluminum and stainless steel in the larger mallet designs has resulted in some of our most forgiving models to date, led by the Tomcat 14. Each model also provides confidence- inspiring alignment cues, from single lines to multi-line alignment aids.
