January can make even the most energetic of us feel a bit down in the dumps – the holiday season is over, Spring is a way off and the weather is cold, but don’t despair! The New Year is in full swing and it’s time to work off that Christmas indulgence and get back on the course. 2018 is set to be a busy year at Surrey Golf magazine... We are pleased to welcome David Boote to the team who will be bringing you all the news from his Challenge Tour throughout the year. Walton Heath Golf Club will be hosting the 2018 British Masters, which we’ll keep you updated on over the coming months. We’ve plenty for you to read in this issue... As well as the latest news from across the county we meet the Surrey First Team guys and Lauren Blease looks at sloping lies. We aslo bid a fond farewell to John Davies, who after 13 years at the helm is retiring as Secretary at Surrey Golf Union. But who will take his place? FOXHILLS MEMBER WINS TRIP TO MAURITIUS A member at Foxhills, in Ottershaw, will be winging his way to Mauritius after winning the inaugural Beachcomber Tours’ Road to Mauritius Golf Championship at the prestigious Stoke Park, in Berkshire.
J
onathan Webster, 46, a marketer who plays off a 21 handicap, scored 38 Stableford points, but was separated from Stoke Park’s Jerome Drouin only on countback. And it was that narrow margin that will see the former enjoying seven nights on the idyllic Indian Ocean island. More than 500 competitors had started out in the competition at six venues in the Home Counties: Foxhills, Hindhead, Windlesham, Golf at Goodwood, Mannings Heath and Stoke Park Country Club. Four members from each venue won through to the final at Stoke Park knowing they were just one good round of golf away from winning a luxury sevennight golf holiday for two at Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. The prize, courtesy of Guildford-based Beachcomber Tours (which has been exploring Mauritius since 1952, when it opened the island’s first hotel) comprises a seven-night dinner, bed and breakfast break for two, in a deluxe room at the Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa, with complimentary flights from London, private hotel transfers and unlimited golf at Paradis Golf Club. A delighted Webster, who lives in Windsor, said: “I didn’t have any expectations on the day, I was surprised to have won. I played well and shot 38 points, but it was so close. I think nearly half the field were within three shots of winning.” “I thought it was a terrific tournament, with some great courses chosen for the qualifiers. Stoke Park was an excellent venue to play the final. I still haven’t decided who I’m taking, but I’ve certainly had no shortage of offers from other members at my golf club.”

A FOND FAREWELL TO JOHN DAVIES After turning 70 in May this year, John Davies, Secretary of Surrey Golf Union has decided its time to retire.
J
ohn started his golfing career as a caddy at Woodcote Park. It wasn’t a keen interest in golf that got him on the course as a child. He wanted to earn some extra cash and was told you could earn more on a golf course than you could on a paper round. A decision that would shape his entire life. He began carrying clubs for Bill Tillman on a regular basis and it’s thanks to Bill that John began to play. Bill not only gave him a second-hand set of clubs but also paid for his junior membership at Woodcote Park. He practiced there and at Coulsdon Court and recorded his first handicap at 8. When he was just 16 he won the club championship with a handicap of 4 and went on to represent Surrey at all levels between 1963-1982. John attended Reading University and after discovering there was no golf club, he began the Reading University golf society. In 1967 he took them to the British University Championships and they won.
After graduating in mathematics John took various jobs in sales and marketing, the majority of which came through golfing contacts, but at the age of 29 he decided this wasn’t for him. After two years of trying, he managed to obtain the post of Secretary at West Middlesex Golf Club. Two years later he moved to Leatherhead and after guiding them through a major redesign (the M25 cut off their club house), he then moved briefly to Coombe Hill. When the position of Chief Executive became available at the prestigious Moor Park in 1986, John grabbed the opportunity. He remained at Moor Park for 14 years (hosting the Tillman trophy in 1999) until his move to Effingham in 2000. In 1991 the AGCS offered John a role as a lecturer for their new training courses, because of his passion for education he agreed and soon became the main lecturer, taking half of the classes each year. John has been dedicated to improving
levels of education and training for secretaries and managers throughout his career, he has been involved in the AGCS and IGCM training courses since their inception and continues to be involved in development schemes encouraging junior golf. In 2004 John took the position of Secretary at Surrey County Golf Union where he has remained for 13 years as an ambassador for golf. Johns main aim has been to encourage young people into the game and show them how golf is not just a sport but a way of life, providing opportunities both on and off the course. Under his leadership the standard of the junior elite players has improved year on year, with a number of them representing their country and wining scholarships to USA universities. John has been an invaluable member at the Surrey Golf Union and will be missed by colleagues, managers and players across the county. Good luck in the future John!
Golf has provided me not only with a lifetime career but a wealth of friends, acquaintances and interests over a 55 year period, and I would recommend anyone to enjoy the advantages of playing and being part of golf administration. In particular, being a junior golfer helps so much with the necessary merging into the adult world, through a common interest in the sport. John Davies

SURREY 1ST TEAM WIN THE LEAGUE The County First team contested the South East Group League final on October 8th in a match v Essex at Farleigh Court GC.
T
he League consists of two sections, one North of the Thames, the other South of the river. Surrey play Sussex, Hampshire, Kent and Dorset, whilst Berks, Bucks, Oxon (BBO), Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Bedfordshire play in the Northern section with the winner of each playing a final. Having overcome Dorset at Broadstone in July, Kent at Walton Heath in September and the National Champions, Hampshire at Hindhead in August, the team won their first

league final since 2013 in a quietly confident manner, lifting The Daily Telegraph Salver for the first time since 2011. Surrey are the County who has won this League the most, with 13 wins since it started in 1964.
The Match David Corben led off the morning foursomes with Harry Plowman Ollington sweeping aside their opponents by mid morning winning 4&3. Next up was Alfie Fox and Obe
Ayton. An Essex birdie run saw the Surrey pair lose on the 18th green being dormie down arriving on the tee. Strong finishes in the foursomes from Will Dugdale and David Primrose and Billy Whiteman alongside Kieran Lovelock with both pairings making gains over the last few holes to win their matches 2&1. This made the score at lunch 3-1 to Surrey. Captain Corben beat Arron Edwards Hill 3&2 in what was to be a birdie splattered afternoon.

Obe played Will Perceval losing 4&2, whilst Harry finished with a big win beating Callum Pipe 5&3. Alfie battled Jay Beisser but succumbed 3&2. The score was now 5-3 to Surrey – the scoreboard at this point didn’t make great reading for Surrey with only Will holding a slender 1up lead after 13, Kieran being all square through 13 with Billy and David both 3 down going into the last few holes despite both being under par. David eventually lost 2&1 with his opponent Brandon Meads

having an astonishing 11 birdies over the 17 holes. Billy lost to Curtis Knipes to make the scores tied at 5-5 but just a few minutes later following a win on the 14th, Will almost holed his approach at the 16th to beat a dogged Andy May. Surrey 6 Essex 5. Kieran was in his usual anchor role and having gone 1 down after the 11th was 1up on the 15th tee. Excellent wedges to the green by both him and his opponent, Ali Plumb, saw both putts narrowly miss
and Kieran take his narrowest of leads down the tricky 16th hole. An Essex near miss followed by an all familiar Kieran holed putt meant he was dormie 2up and secured the League title for Surrey. Excellent regulation par 3s on the 17th hole from both players in the fading light saw Kieran close out the match 2&1 and a final outcome of Surrey 7 Essex 5. Turn over to meet the team >

1 DAVID CORBEN (Captain 2014 – 2017)

Educated at Exeter University, David graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and MSc in Economics and is now a financial equity trader. He has been a member at Hindhead Golf Club since 1997. David is two times County Champion (2015 & 2016) and three times Surrey Order Of Merit winner. Other most notable achievements include five-time Devils Punch Bowl champion and two-time John Cross Bowl winner. Handicap of +4.2 which has to be one of the lowest in the country for a working amateur.
David is a member at Sutton Green who won the EGU SE group final 2017 and was the winner of the Surrey Mid Age Championship 2013 & 2015 and the Surrey Order of Merit 2015. He was runner up in the Surrey Amateur 2015 and third in the English Mid Amateur Championship 2014. After a gap of nine years he has been back playing for the first team for three years.
2 SIMON CROCKET Simon has been Involved with the County 1st team squad since 1992. With over 70 appearances, including four National County Finals and four South East League Finals. He was Surrey County Captain from 2007-2010. He was awarded the Wilkinson Sword in 2012 and was the Surrey Order Of Merit winner in 2010. Other notable achievements include being three times Surrey Masters and Surrey Foursomes winner. Total tournament wins 14. 3 KIERAN LOVELOCK Kieran is a member at Hindhead GC. He studied at Xavier University from 2006-2010. Kieran was a British Boys quarter finalist and made his first team debut in 2006. He was the top points scorer for Surrey in 2016 and is unbeaten in foursomes league matches for four years. Kieran is the incoming County Captain for 2018 4 HARVEY BYERS Harvey is 18 years of age with a handicap of +2. A member at Walton Heath Golf Club, he has been playing for Surrey since the age of 12 and been playing in the men’s team for the past two years. 5 OBEDIAH AYTON Obediah is a member at Windlesham Golf Club. He studied at St Johns University in New York achieving a double majoring in accounting and sports management. In 2016 he obtained an injury in the gym, stopping him playing golf for nearly 12 months. In 2017 he made his return representing Surrey. Notable achievements include being All American List 2015, All BIG EAST First Team 2013-2015, BIG EAST Champion 2014, All PING District Team 2011-2015, Phil Mickleson Award 2012, All NEC First Team 2011-2012 and NEC Rookie of the year 2011. 7 ALFIE FOX (Surrey Boys Captain) A member at Roehampton Club. Alfie studied at Whitgift School. He was the winner of HMC national foursomes 2015, ISGA national schools champions 2017 and individual winner with course record 64 at Princes. Alfie was Surrey U16 champion in 2015 and his first team debut was aged 16. 8 HARRY PLOWMAN-OLLINGTON A member at Addington Palace, Harry studied at Whitgift School. He has been playing golf this year with David Corben and as a pair they have not yet been beaten. Notable achievements include a top 10 finish at the Carris Trophy, sixth at the Berkhamsted Trophy, making the cut at the British boys and winning the ISGA team schools competition with fellow Alfie Fox and Harvey Byers. 9 BILLY WHITEMAN Member at Addington Palace Golf Club, Billy has played for Surrey at every level becoming Captain of the Colts side and debuting in the first team this year. He has had a string of consistent finishes in 2017 including a quarter final in the Surrey Amateurs, a third place finish in the Surrey Colts and currently lying fourth in the Surrey Order Of Merit. He has also won the Addington Palace Club Championship in 2017 for the third time in four years. MAX O’HAGAN Max plays at West Hill. Over the summer he won the Surrey Amateur Championship and played in national tournaments as well as representing Surrey in the six man team championship and league matches. He is currently studying at the Florida Institute of Technology. He recorded his first individual win this year at the Cougar Invitational played at Columbus Country Club. ANGUS FLANAGAN Member at St Georges Hill, he attended Bradfield College. Angus was selected to the 10-player
roster of the 2016-17 England Boys Golf Team, competed at the 2017 European Boys’ Team Championships (Jean-Louis Dupont Trophy), won the 2016 Carris Trophy as the English boys’ U18 open stroke play championship, runner-up at the England Boys’ Order of Merit 2016. Angus was part of England’s winning team at the 2016 Boys’ Home Internationals and accepted the Lowest Round Medal from the Duke of York after carding a 68 at the 2016 Duke of York Young Champions. WILL DUGDALE Member at Sunningdale. Will represented Oxford University (1994-98) and Cambridge University (2009) golf teams and in between spent five years as a pro, playing on the Europro, Challenge and Sunshine tours. Off the course he is head of German at Dulwich College. After a few good performances early this year (wins at 2017 President’s Putter at Rye & Addington Palace Men’s Open), he was back playing for the county, 20 years after his last county matches! Handicap +1.5 MARK BOOKER Mark is a member at Royal Wimbledon GC. His position in the Surrey first team has spanned several decades with him serving as Surrey Captain from 2010 – 2013. He has had several Men’s Open wins including the Devils Punch Bowl & John Cross Bowl. Mark won the Palmer Cup in 2000 and was County Champion in 2013. JOHN NOBLE John has been Surrey Head Coach since 2012. He is an AA Advanced PGA Professional, fully qualified since 1993 and a senior instructor at The Royal Automobile Club, Epsom and has been England Golf Regional Coach since 2012. JIM CHRISTINE (COACH) Member at Worplesdon, Jim is a PGA Master Member at Worplesdon, a PGA Master Professional and Surrey’s 1st team coach. Jim has worked with numerous players from their earliest involvement with the game to a point where they have been able to embark on successful careers on various professional platforms. He has written instruction articles for both Golf World and Golf International magazines, co-written two books on golf swing technique and worked on Golf World and Golf International Instruction Schools, both in the UK and abroad. He was awarded the status of Master Professional by the Professional Golfers’ Association in 2006 in recognition of his achievements.

SURREY JUNIORS TAKE PART IN THE FRIENDSHIP TROPHY Surrey has been involved with The Friendship Trophy for some years and this year played host to regional teams from France and Spain.
T
he event is supported by the European Tour and Ladies European Tour who provide prizes. The match is designed to promote junior golf across different regions of Europe and this year Surrey hosted Occitanie from France and Catalunya from Spain. The event is open to any junior golfer with each team having four boys and two girls. It is played in great spirit and a fantastic way for golfers to mix with other players from different countries. The golf is very competitive with some exceptional young players, each team includes international players. This year the trophy was played for at Old Thorns Country Club, a 36 hole scratch stroke play event with the best
four scores to count for each round. The weather was horrendous with very strong winds, heavy showers and a course that was struggling with the wet conditions. Everyone played well and Surrey’s score (across the eight that counted) was a total of 613, an average of just over 76. Ligue Regionale de Golf Occitanie played very well, their average score was just under 75 with a total of 599. Catalunya scored 628. The match next year is due to be played in Germany. Surrey are working

U18’S LOSE TO BB&O IN LEAGUE FINAL This League is run by England Golf South East Region. The 11 counties are split into three small groups. Surrey were with Hampshire, Kent and Sussex.

fter winning their group, Surrey went through to face the winners of the other two groups in the final, played on a neutral course – Hockley Golf Club in Hampshire. The Final is a triangular match and the other group winners were BB&O and Norfolk. In the morning foursomes Surrey beat both Counties 3-1 and felt confident for the afternoon singles. However, it did not go to plan.

Surrey beat Norfolk quite comfortably (as did BB&O) but were beaten by BB&0 7-1 and they played some incredible golf. Surrey’s U18 team was incredibly strong but could not match how BB&O played, they deserved to win. RAFIAH BANDAY Are there any specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results and try to identify any areas on which to improve?
When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? I started playing golf when I was seven years old, and my inspiration was my parents who encouraged me to take up the sport from a young age. When I was younger I watched lots of golf tournaments on the TV with my family. Later on, when I was around five years old I used to go to my brother’s golf club to drop him and pick him up, it was at this golf club where I used to chip and putt by the 18th green, and that’s when my interest in the sport began to grow. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream team? My favourite player is Jordan Spieth because of his incredibly consistent putting and chipping. My dream team would be Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros and my brother. 2017 was a great year for you. What are your plans for the next year? So far 2017, has been the best year in my golfing career, I was selected to play for the English Schools Golf Association team against Wales, for the England South Region Squad and Junior County Week. Additionally, I won the Surrey Junior Under 15 Championship and we beat the Surrey Ladies first team. My plans for 2018 are to participate in bigger events, especially the England Golf tournaments. I would like to lower my handicap, in order to qualify for tournaments such as the Sir Henry Cooper and Hampshire Rose. 16
Overall I work on my whole game. I like to focus on my long game particularly throughout the winter. However, thanks to the England South Region coaching I have learnt new clever ways to practice other parts of my game during this season when it’s cold and dark. To monitor my results, I use Golf Data Lab, which tells me my statistics throughout the year, for example, my greens in regulation percentage and how many chips I hit to inside 6ft etc. My data tells me that for the future I need to work on my putting. What are your goals for 2018 & beyond? My goals are to play at a high consistent level, which hopefully will lead to me join the Under 18s National Squad. Also, I would like to play in the next Junior County Week because of how competitive it is and it’s the most fun golf
tournament I have played. As well as this, I want to play in the English Schools Golf Association matches. Eventually, I would like to play professionally. What advice would you give young players starting to learn the game? I would tell them that the most important aspect is to enjoy themselves and have fun, because even if they find golf difficult to begin with, they can only improve from there and learn to the best of their ability. I would advise them to join golf academies such as the SLCGA Girls CAP sessions, to learn golf well and from then on enhance their golf. What is your favourite sports team? My favourite sports team is the Ryder Cup team, because of how determined they are, the excitement this tournament creates and how they represent the whole of Europe against USA. Also, they are very inspirational, and have given me confidence to play for my own team.

BRITTON WINS UK GOLF TITLE Local Wimbledon Common Golf Club member Jane Britton has become the UK National Public Course Championship Ladies Champion playing on the prestigious Eden Course at St Andrews.

ane, the club’s current Lady ViceCaptain took up the game three years ago and qualified through club and regional rounds to make the finals alongside club member Virginia Marin who won the regional round in Hertfordshire. With Madge Corbitt, Club Treasurer, as her caddie, Jane, playing in division 2 off a 22 handicap scored an impressive 40 points to take the overall title in wet and windy conditions beating all division 1 and 2 players in this stableford competition to take the overall Ladies Champion title. Speaking of the result Jane said: “It
is the first time the club has entered this event. I only just made the final and was excited just to play at St Andrews so to win is unbelievable. My caddie was a vital part of the day and the club members have been incredibly supportive. WCGC is a small friendly
club with a relatively new ladies section so hopefully this shows that we can produce some excellent results and because we are small, opportunities abound so I hope this will inspire members and encourage other golfers to join us.”

Fuller’s route to glory saw her push the highly-rated Lily May Humphreys, 15, the British Amateur Girls’ champion, into second place for a second-year running. The 15-year-old, who first picked up a club at the age of three, bettered elder sister Sammy, a runner-up in the Algarve event in 2013. “This is close to the biggest win of my career,” said Fuller, the English Girls’ Under-16 champion. With a seven-shot lead at the turn, Fuller really turned the screw as she mustered five birdies in all, including a fine greenside chip in at the penultimate hole. “This is such an honour,” she added. “There are so many who have won this

MANDY BRUCK RETAINS HER TITLE AS LADY’S CLUB CHAMPION FOR THE 20TH YEAR! After a move to Chipstead as a child, Mandy Bruck joined Woodcote Park. Her handicap tumbled quickly and she won the Scratch Cup in 1980 and 1981. Soon after she took a substantial break from golf to raise her family, returning in 1997 to begin her reign as Club Champion Lady Golfer.
O
n any reckoning, to be Club Lady Scratch Champion for twenty consecutive years is quite an achievement. That is Mandy Bruck’s performance record at Woodcote Park – lady champion for two whole decades from 1997. While Mandy may be four strokes ahead on handicap than a handful of other ladies at the club, such advantage to be sure can easily disappear on the day – depending on the weather, one really bad shot, the rub of the green; and one’s nerve. Mandy confesses she dreads September arriving, and thirty-six holes of competition. There’s cause to be so nervous, her average winning margin over the whole run of years has been just three. Only in two years, 2006 and 2015, has victory been in double figures. Those were her finest years for results: 146 and 155 strokes respectively. (The 2015 score meant she also won the handicap trophy, with a net 143). Proving how unpredictable things can be in this game, in 2014 Mandy

was forced into an eighteen hole playoff against Ann Marie Reading, both were on the same score after thirty six holes, Mandy won. The same clutch of women have been chasing Mandy’s title almost from the start (Ann Marie, Kitty McEvoy, Jean Hallam, Marie Palmer, and Sarah Cox). Next year will bring new risk of being unseated and Mandy’s determination and skill, will need to be drawn on. Woodcote is used to producing outstanding players. Every one of them indebted to the club and their parents for encouraging them to persist with the game. Over the last half century, many have gone on to win county, national,

he Hicks team from Walton Heath managed the hat-trick when they beat Worplesdon in the final at Royal Mid-Surrey. At the half way point Worplesdon looked the stronger side, being up or level in four of the five matches, but
Walton Heath fought back over the last 9 holes to win four of the matches with the last one being called in. Walton Heath are only the second club to win the Hicks three years in succession – the other club being Worplesdon!

he two finals of the Centenary Bowl and Plate were played out at Guildford Golf Club. Coombe Hill were to play Walton Heath for the Plate, and by the halfway point Coombe were up in all matches except one; this was the way it stayed. Congratulations to Coombe Hill; their ladies have had a cracking season. Wimbledon Park were out to win the Centenary Bowl for their third time.

This year they had Wentworth. This was a thrilling final, with three matches completed, Wimbledon Park had won two of them. The fourth match was level after the regulation 18 holes, so they set off down the 19th. Meanwhile the fifth match was dormy to Wimbledon Park, so still all to play for. Wimbledon Park managed to clinch the 5th match and win the Bowl. A thrilling final.
he ‘Champion of Champions’ Gold Medal Final saw two of the county’s first team players battle it out over the James Taylor course at Royal MidSurrey. Tana Churchill from Cuddington was playing 15-year-old Lauren Gooding from Roehampton. There was never more than one hole in it, and after the 18 holes the players were level. On the tricky par 3 19th hole neither girl made the green from the tee but Tana managed a sandy par to clinch the match and take the title for Cuddington.
LIZZIE PRIOR WINS AGAIN ON US COLLEGE CIRCUIT Lizzie Prior (Burhill), currently at the University of Las Vegas, is having a great season. SWAPPING NIGHT CLUBS FOR GOLF CLUBS – THE RISE OF THE ALTERNATIVE NIGHT OUT
W
e are now a year on from the controversial and highly publicised closure of one of the UK’s most iconic nightclubs, Fabric. There was a lot of coverage at the time concerning the fact that nightclub attendance had declined significantly and some studies claimed a drop of as much as 34 million in five years. As well as being deterred by the high cost of club entry and expensive drinks, it seems that people are continuing to turn away from nightclubs and looking for more unusual and unique experiences when they go out for the night. An evening spent in the trendier parts of any town will confirm the popularity of quirky alternatives to the traditional nightclub – from bars where revellers sip their drinks and compete around ping pong tables, to high-octane, alcoholfuelled bingo nights that would probably shock more traditional players. One of

the most interesting of these up and coming venues is the Lets Golf simulator centre in Horley, Surrey. Riding the wave of growing popularity of golf among younger generations – with a 20% increase in young people playing golf between 2010 and 2015 – Lets Golf embraces the influx of groups looking to do more with their nights than simply drink overpriced cocktails and dance to music they don’t enjoy. WOULD YOU BENEFIT FROM U.S. COLLEGIATE GOLF? Surrey-based Welshman David Boote has now turned pro, representing his home club of Walton Heath out on tour where he has been a member for the past 13 years.
D
avid attended Stanford University, graduating in 2016, the first European in more than a decade to earn a scholarship to the university, following in the footsteps of golfing greats like Tiger Woods and Tom Watson. Opting to play golf at this level in the States can be a daunting thought, if its something you’re considering, here’s David’s advice on where to begin… So... you have reached ‘scratch’ handicap aged 15/16 and are playing for county or country. Next question is: “Should I play U.S. Collegiate golf?” A tough decision! For some it’s a straightforward choice as, like me, it’s what you always dreamed of doing. But there are many considerations and I will cover some here on whether and where to go. Be realistic about your current golf standard and your ambitions to improve. Don’t underestimate the academic work that will be required at college and keep your education strong if you want your applications to be well received. In addition to GCSEs and A Levels you will need to score well in US Standard Attainment Tests (SATS) Division 1 Colleges play the strongest competition schedules and you will come across the best young players recruited all over the States and internationally. Don’t be put off by this, it will ensure your game progresses! Visit as many different campuses as possible to look at facilities they offer and ask existing players about their day to day experiences. One of the most obvious things you

can actually have some control over is weather. The NCAA ‘off season’ runs from mid November to early February. It’s important to be able to practice properly during these winter months. Although many Northern colleges have good indoor training facilities, Southern and coastal states clearly have a more conducive golf climate! Ultimately, the process will be mainly about how much scholarship the college is able to offer you. Coaches will be very open about this at the outset so don’t be afraid to ask! Also remember that percentages are fluid, and, as older players gradually leave the roster there will be opportunities to improve a scholarship in future years with strong play. It’s in your hands to a large extent!
Finally, really get to know and trust the head coach recruiting you. He (or she) will be the person pushing you forward for four years so you will need to form a solid relationship to get better and succeed. I was very lucky with my choice of Conrad Ray at Stanford University Stanford gave me some of the best years of my life so far, playing in conference winning teams with great leadership at amazing courses. To be able to play in the recent Walker Cup against one of my Stanford teammates with my ex coach and family watching was incredible!

SLOPING LIES with Lauren Blease Golf is not always played from perfect flat lies and often requires us to think a little bit more about the shot we have to play and what we need to alter to produce a good shot.
W
hen I am teaching I often find that the shots people struggle with the most are when the ball is either on an uphill or downhill lie or when the ball is above or below their feet. Below I have described what will happen to the ball on each shot and how you can make some simple changes to your set up to allow for these factors and still have the ball finish where you want it to.
Uphill lie ●●Ball will fly higher in the air ●●Ball will move from right to left ●●Distance will be reduced
How to correct ●●Use a lower lofted club ●● Aim the body and club further right of where you want the ball to land ●● Move the ball further back in your stance and have the weight more of the front foot ●● Keep the body as still as possible, don’t sway off the ball

●● Widen your stance a little to get down to the ball a bit more ●● Bend more from your knees and hips ●● Keep the body as still as possible, don’t sway off the ball One thing that you need to make sure remains constant when playing all of these shots is to keep the body nice and still, it is very common when you are nervous about hitting a shot to sway more and come up more on the follow through, but if you remain centred then it will help to promote a better strike and therefore better end result as well. When you are next out on the course and are faced with any of these shots, take your time and have a think about what you need to do before you hit the shot. You can always make a few notes and keep it in a book in your golf bag and get it out before you have to hit the shot to remind yourself. Over time you will need to rely on this less and less as it will become second nature to you and you won’t always need the notes to remind you of what to do. Designed by Open Champion Sandy Herd, it was later modified by fellow Scottish champion golfer and celebrated course architect, James Braid. Rolling tree-lined fairways and well-kept, slick running greens cared for in the most delightful surroundings are the memories you will take away with you. While the course has played host to some top professionals and aspiring amateurs it provides a fair and enjoyable test to golfers of all abilities. At 6,350 yards off the white tees it is not particularly long, though with a par of 70, it is certainly no pushover. It measures 5,911 yards from the yellow tee boxes and 5,654 yards from the reds. GANTON GOLF CLUB Length 6935 • Par 72 Ganton, in the Vale of Pickering between York and Scarborough, ranks among the very best of Britain’s inland courses. It has played host to many amateur and professional tournaments. A day at Ganton is a day to remember. Following the staging of the Walker Cup, the club has joined Royal Birkdale and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers as being the only clubs honoured to have also staged the Curtis Cup and the Ryder Cup. Ganton, ranked in the top 30 of Europe’s Championship courses,

has hosted many national and international tournaments and is a perfect place to play golf. The terrain is sandy and gently undulating, a blend of links and heathland. The fairways are firm and fast. The bunkers are cunningly placed and sometimes cavernous and the greens are perfection, in summer and winter alike. The architecture of the course is a tribute to some of the most famous names in golf. Vardon, Ray, Braid, Taylor, Colt and MacKenzie have all contributed to make Ganton the unique challenge it is today. www.gantongolfclub.com ALWOODLEY Length: 6322 • Par: 70 Alwoodley is recognised as one of Britain’s finest inland courses. It was designed by Dr.Alister MacKenzie, who left a legacy of classic golf courses, Alwoodley was the first. He created a layout at Alwoodley of rare subtlety and sophistication. Alwoodley is a natural heathland course, with springy fairways cutting through a profusion of heather and shrubs. It features eye-catching and naturalistic-looking bunkers, strategic choices and large, often undulating greens. The course runs almost straight out and back, the inward nine being

tougher as most holes are played into the prevailing wind. At Alwoodley, the Stroke Index does not always equate with degree of difficulty – the indices were devised in 1907 when golf was mainly matchplay! www.alwoodley.co.uk MOORTOWN GOLF CLUB Length: 6782 • Par: 72 Established in 1909 and designed by leading golf course architect Dr Alistair Mackenzie, the long championship course at Moortown Golf Club is one that provides a sound test for the more experienced golfer. It measures 6782 yards over some fine moorland and 18 holes for which a par of 72 is offered. Do not be under any illusions that this is an easily attainable score, however, as there are plenty of hazards to overcome. The course has also spawned one of British golf’s great female golfers, Alison Nicholas. LINDRICK Length: 6270 • Par: 71 Located just outside Worksop, Lindrick Golf Club is home to a course that will excite, challenge and, if shown the respect it commands, ultimately reward golfers. It has many tight tree-lined fairways that lurk in wait to punish any stray shots and there are lots of long holes that will test your full range of golfing skills and your long irons, making approach work all the more challenging. Watch out for the greens also as they are well guarded by some strategically positioned bunkers. The par of 71 provides a good indication of the challenges that lie in wait on these 18 holes over 6485 yards. It is a demanding course for any level of golfer but one that is a joy to play.

ith Italy hosting the Ryder Cup in 2022, focus is turning to the country’s golfing attractions. Italy Golf and More (www.italygolfandmore.com), a collaboration between the regions, the Italian Golf Federation and the Ministry of Tourism, promotes golf trips highlighting the country’s other more established attractions, such as its architecture, scenery, culture, history, food and wine.

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region is the most north-easterly part of Italy and it is about an hour and half’s flight from London to Trieste, the region’s capital. Ryanair flies daily from London Stansted, four times a week from East Midlands, three times from Bristol and twice weekly from Leeds. For several centuries Trieste was a thriving port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. From this came great wealth, reflected in the grand 19th-century
architecture of the city – the main square floodlit at night is a glorious sight. After World War I Trieste became part of Italy and after World War II, for nine years it was an independent territory governed by the UK, US and New Zealand. There is a movement to return Trieste’s independent status, a large banner in one of the main squares implores the UK and USA “to come back”.

Trieste Golf Club, the oldest of the region’s seven golf clubs, was founded and built by Allied troops during this period and expanded to 18 holes in 1954. Four of the holes at this parkland track are right-angled doglegs – including the 16th, where the dogleg comes in the final 50 yards of the 290 yarder. But the hole the

club is proudest of is the 17th due to the backdrop of the Gulf of Trieste. Do not step back to admire your tee shots as the fringes of the course are protected by an electric fence after wild boars did 40,000 euros of damage digging up the course last year. Udine, another city with a many-storied history and arresting
architecture, is the host of the Senior Italian Open. Udine’s course is part of the Villaverde Hotel & Resort with its 33 bedrooms, extensive wellness centre and indoor and outdoor swimming pools and is still work in progress in design and conditioning. continued on page 44

The layout has been tweaked between the first and second Senior Italian Opens, of 2016 and 2017, with three new holes and several redesigns. One of the redesigns is to the 13th where the lake has been extended in from the right leaving a 25-yard gap between lake and bunker where the pros’ drives would land. The elegant green complex fronted by a steam made this my favourite hole here. Another re-crafted hole is the 6th, no longer a par 3 but a 375-yard rightturning dogleg to a shallow green high on a hill. Another course with reconstruction plans is Castel d’Aviano. A new clubhouse is being built, with a driving range alongside. This will involve a re-routing with the older nine holes becoming the front nine. Currently the newer holes, which criss-cross a flat field, are played as 3-11. Some of the older holes are distinctly quirky. The par-4 2nd (and future 18th) stroke index 1, requires perfect placement off the tee on a tight dogleg to then attack the green tucked away and downhill and guarded by a huge spreading pine tree. The tree-lined 17th also requires an exact tee shot to set up an approach to the green tucked away downhill behind a lake. The course is next door to the atmospheric hotel Villa Policreti, parts of which date from the 1500s. The importance of food in Italian culture is shown on Golf Senza Confini Tarvisio‘s scorecard. There are no pictures of the course on it, instead one of a meal at the Michelin-starred
Restaurant Ilija in the clubhouse and another of Ilija Pejic himself. When not in the kitchen, he is often on the course - the club’s director reckons that no-one has played as many rounds on the course as its chef. Many come to the club just to eat – indeed from November to April the course, but not restaurant, is closed. The par-3 3rd over a deep valley and between a gap in the trees was my favourite hole on the four courses we played. There are another couple of enjoyable par 3, both steeply descending from the tee, at 15 and 16. The opening holes are played on flat land, as are 17 and 18. In between times the course takes to the hills with the 8th and 9th tight short par 4s going up and then down a steep slope, the 8th’s two-tiered green is on land owned by Vatican. Mountains surrounding the course make for splendid vistas from this layout five miles from Austria and five from Slovenia and highlight the magnificent and varied scenery of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
