After a long, chilly Winter, I’m pleased to see that Spring is finally starting to show its face which means it’s time to come out of hibernation, dust off the cobwebs, head to the course and make 2019 the year to improve your golf. Although temperatures can still be in the ‘sweater wearing’ region it’s also a time to enjoy watching the countryside spring into life. We have our usual round up of news from across the county and in this issue we put the ‘spotlight’ on Puttenham Golf Club, who are celebrating their 125th anniversary. Check out our Pro-Talk pages where Sam Truman, helps to make putting practice fun and effective and Matt Antell looks at stress free bunker play.

CHAMPIONSHIP TO CLOSE EXCITING ENGLISH DOUBLE HEADER The Staysure PGA Seniors Championship will end two enthralling weeks of Staysure Tour action as it follows The Senior Open Presented by Rolex in the Staysure Tour International Schedule.
T
he event, which will be held at London Golf Club for a second successive season, takes place the week after The Senior Open Presented by Rolex at Royal Lytham and St Annes. With back-to-back weeks on English soil, including the last Senior Major of the season as well as one of the most lucrative events on the tour, it gives players the chance to quickly move up the Staysure Tour Order of Merit. With the stars from the over-50s circuit aiming to build momentum over the two-week period, the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is set for another drama filled week of action at London Golf Club, a member of

European Tour Destinations’ network of world-class properties. Last year, Philip Golding reigned victorious after a final round 63, nine under par, coming from six shots behind to lift the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in an action-packed final day. Ryan Howsam, Chairman of Staysure, said: “Last year’s event was brilliant from start to finish. Planning for this year is well under way and we are working tirelessly to surpass the success of last year’s event with David MacLaren and his team, as well as London Golf Club, who were fantastic hosts. “We had really positive feedback from the pros and many of our customers
described the experience of playing in the Pro-Am and Alliance as one of the best experiences of their lives – we want to build on this great platform for next year.” Stephen Follett, Chief Executive of London Golf Club, added: “We are incredibly happy to be confirmed as the host venue for the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship for the second year running. “Despite the hot weather giving our greenkeeping team an enormous task last year, the International course remained in fantastic condition. It’s a credit to the whole London Golf Club team that the Staysure Tour will return this year.”

atthew Ford (CK Group) won the 12th Invitational Sunshine ProAm, notching up a 17-under-par Stableford points total of 161 to claim victory and the £1,100 winner’s cheque. Ford opened with a blistering 44 points at Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal, which included five birdies on the trot. He kept the opposition at bay with three more rounds of 39 points each, one at Quinta Do Lago’s North course and then two more over the South to win by seven. Pushing Ford as hard as they could was runner up PGA Cup star Andy Raitt (St. George’s Hill) just seven behind, and the 2018 Battle Bowl champion Oscar Granstrom-Livesey (Royal Mid-Surrey) three more back. Raitt’s performance helped drive his amateurs to the team event trophy and prizes with a masterful 361 points, well clear of Louis Savill’s Tandridge team who took second spot. This took the total raised by the Sunshiners over the 12 years of the event in excess of £100,000 – a real ray of sunshine for charity! The week also saw a Monte Rei Challenge Day where Raitt got some revenge, winning with 39 points from Granstrom-Livesey with 36. This left Ford sharing third spot on 35 points with three others: Guy Woodman (ProAgenda.com), Louis Savill (Tandridge) and Craig Sutherland (Poult Wood).

IT’S BEN’S TIME, AT LAST! A par on the first play-off hole of the Red Sea Little Venice Open was enough for Surrey’s Ben Wheeler to finally catch the first title of his professional career, while Italians Enrico Di Nitto and Federico Maccario, leaders respectively after the first and the second rounds, both missed their second putts and had to settle for sharing second place on another quite windy day in Egypt.
T
he three talented players had finished their third round tied at -6, with Di Nitto returning the best card, a 68 (-4) after a disappointing second round; Maccario dropping one shot compared to the -7 he had on the previous day; and Wheeler adding a 69 to the 68-73 he had on his records. Maccario and Di Nitto have both already won Alps Tour events in the past, but on Sokhna GC course, at last, it was Ben Wheeler’s time. “It’s such a relief” he said, after holing a not-soeasy 3-ft putt, when his opponents had already missed from a slightly further
12
distance for bogeys. “I had been close a few times, especially last year, so I was really waiting for this moment” he conceded, “Although I’m a bit surprised it happened in such windy conditions, usually I don’t like them at all”. Ben, 26, from Surrey, had joined Alps Tour back in 2016 having finished 6th in the Qualifying School, and collected 7 more ‘top tens’ since. In 2018 he ended in 12th position in the Order of Merit, playing 15 tournaments and totalling about 12.500 points. Now, after two tournaments he has already 6.500 points to his credit, more than a half than last year and shares the leadership of the OoM with Frenchman Frederic Lacroix, winner of the first tournament of the 2019 Alps Tour schedule, the Ein Bay Open. Experienced Argentinian Rafa Echenique had the best comeback with
a round in 66 (-6), made of six birdies and one bogey in the front nine holes, followed by two more birdies and a bogey on the back nine, and shared fourth place with Englishman Jack Clarkson, at -5. The 50 players who made the cut could share a total prize money of 40,000 euros, with the winner cashing in 5,800 euros. Next swing of the Egypt Winter Series will take place from March 25th to April 6th with three tournaments in a row played on three spectacular courses near Caire and the Pyramids, with a field of 132 players and a prize money of 40,000 euros each. U14’s LEAGUE
SPANISH GOLF TRIP 21–24 FEBRUARY 2019
One of the greatest assets Surrey County Golf has is the willingness to discuss change and the flexibility to do so. The good news about this is that the benefit of this is to the players within the county. The teams were:

J
ust over three years ago the management team working with the U12’s-U14’s approached Mr McNeill with an idea to have something a little more than the February half term two-day league training at a location in Surrey and take this abroad for four days, including three rounds of golf and coaching. Trying to do the previous arrangement year-on-year always presented a gamble over weather conditions and in turn how much the players could benefit from it. Thankfully the answer was ‘yes’, giving more time for the players to be coached, play, interact and the coaches to see them on and off the course, creating a great team environment. This year was the third year and once again a stay at Mar Menor. Oscar Lent and Aidan Millham were
14
already in Spain, Aidan joined up with his team at lunch but unfortunately Oscar was not due until 4.30, so Sam Truman stepped in for Oscar. The first day was 4-ball better ball, with golf strategy and course management questions thrown in by Ben Clayton. Villa 2 came out on top after day one with the notable scalp of Truman and Banday being taken by Vorobyev and Prince 6&5 Day two saw the first change to the normal trip by the teams and coaching staff being transported to El Valle golf club. The course is slightly more inland and cut out of the rocks, offering a different and slightly tougher challenge to Mar Menor but some good holes. It also provided us with clear blue skies and a lovely warm sunny day.

The full days began with coaching and day two focused on green reading and pace with some long game to round the session off. Notes were taken, questions were asked, and tests were undertaken. A lot of fun and head scratching was had trying to roll the ball into that little hole at different paces. The second days competition was triple match play in seeded order. match play enables coaches Ben and Sam to play 9 holes with each group and mirrors the format for the league matches the boys will play. El Valle has plenty of slopes, lots of bunkers and false fronts everywhere but this did not stop a birdie fest and they were flying in everywhere. We had short hole outs through great iron play, long hole outs that Jordan Spieth would be proud off and chip in’s from off the green. After 6 holes one of the boys had recorded 4 putts in total and on one of the holes, every player in a group recorded a birdie, each from 3 different sides of the hole. The boys gave great feedback on the course which featured elevated tees, caves and plenty of water. Day three again saw another change with the coach transporting everyone to Condado de Alhama. This is the Jack Nicklaus signature course within this group and provides great practice facilities utilised by the Scandinavian national teams year on year. Once again, the intensity was raised with this being the hardest of the three courses. In addition to the course presenting its own challenge, temperatures had risen
16
further, every cloud had disappeared, and the wind had picked up. The practice facilities for coaching offered up a full range of activities including Trackman skills tests, pitching and chipping challenges, putting challenges and bunker play. The boys were shown each test and the skills challenges were underway. On completion of testing and collection of scores, the boys competed as a group in a final tough chipping competition. As on the previous days the group all sat for lunch and refreshments before beginning the final round of triple match play. Ben and Sam once again were able to play alongside the boys, ask questions and provide invaluable guidance and information. The course provided a stern but fair test with again numerous well positioned bunkering, false fronts, slope on the fairways and the trickiest greens of the trip. Rounds were completed by each group, some tight matches had been won and lost on the 18th, refreshments were taken on before boarding the coach to total up scores which were to be announced at our final dinner. Prior to dinner the announcements
were given with Villa 2 (Aidan Millham, Kris Kim, Leo Vorobyev & Daniel Prince) running out winners. Day four, demonstrated that they do run out of energy, trying to wake the boys on the morning to jump on the coach for 8am possibly presents the toughest challenge of the trip. Luckily this was achieved, and the group flew home to be met by parents at the airport. The benefits of this trip have been previously listed but cannot be understated from all sides.

Golfing Injuries.
Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital’s top tips on how to avoid them.
Golf may be fairly low-impact, however many injuries are associated with this sport, with most a result of poor mechanics or overuse. The most commonly injured areas we see are the lower back, elbow, wrist, hand and shoulder. To help you avoid injuries: 1. Adjust your swing; keep your swing smooth to avoid overusing one particular muscle and make sure you don’t over-swing. 2. Warm up for at least 10 minutes before playing a round.
3. Lift and carry your clubs carefully. 4. Try to avoid hitting the ground or rough when you swing as this is the main cause of hand and wrist injuries.
Why come to Nuffield Hospital if you do suffer an injury? At Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital, we have no waiting lists, you can be seen by a healthcare professional from 24-48 hours.
What is your Recovery Plus programme and how can it help me? Recovery Plus is Nuffield Health’s flagship recovery programme available free of charge to our private self-funding patients. It brings together a spectrum of healthcare services across Nuffield Health’s Hospitals and Fitness & Wellbeing Gyms providing you with a personal recovery programme. This includes a health check, exercise and diet advice, a 3-month gym membership and your own recovery coach.
Our Orthopaedic surgeons. We have a large number of Orthopaedic Surgeons practising at our hospital, specialising in a variety of areas from hip, knee, foot & ankle and spinal sporting injuries.

WINTER TRAINING BREAK FOR SURREY COUNTY U18 AND U16 LEAGUE SQUAD Twenty of the County U18 and U16 squad enjoyed a winter training break at the Pestana Vila Sol Golf Resort in Portugal, at the start of February.
L
ed by county coaches John Noble and Gregor Brodie and supported by the U16 Manager Brian Woodham and U18 Manager, Gary Barthram, the boys were able to develop their golf in some fantastic conditions. Located near Faro in Portugal, the Pestana Vila Sol Resort has excellent training facilities, along with an undulating 27 hole golf course which was a great challenge for the squad. The three days were packed with morning training sessions with coaches, followed by an 18 hole
competition in the afternoon, with the format for each round being changed daily to test the boys thought process around the course and team work. The trip also allowed for some great team bonding ahead of a very busy golf season for this bunch of boys. The trip was part of the county’s continued drive to develop golf at the U18 level, an age group that has consistently performed well over previous years and produced some outstanding young golfers. Next years’ return trip is already in the planning!
ENRIQUE DIMAYUGA SELECTED FOR ENGLAND SQUAD England Golf have just announced their Teams for the 2019 season and once again Surrey’s Enrique Dimayuga has been selected. A member at Walton Heath, 17 year old Enrique who plays off a -1.9 handicap has been a part of the Surrey set up since his very early days in golf. His first taste of County events was in the very successful RookieTour, a junior tour that has identified and developed many a good golfer, Internationals and professionals. Enrique then went onto play in Surrey teams from the U12’s right through all the age groups to the Men’s 1st team, on occasion Captaining some of the junior sides. Surrey are extremely proud of what Enrique has achieved so far and are sure there will be many more honours to come.

ONE TO WATCH...
Gabby Shacklady Kent last year, I was fortunate enough to achieve a hole-in-one before 20 people, going on to win 5 and 6. Surrey went on to win the title, which as a genuine team player inspired me. I enjoy being part of a winning team. My present match play stats are played 21, won 19. How often do you play/practice? Is finding time to play whilst managing school work etc. difficult?
When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration? Under the pretence of helping me keep my balance to walk at 10 months I was literally given a golf club. I was therefore comparatively comfortable at 12 months to use my fathers full-length clubs in my early attempts to hit balls. My own inspiration comes from my father, who advises some of the world’s most successful companies in leadership and neuroscience, so throughout my career I have been able to draw upon the most recent neurological advances. My confidence is not misplaced or arrogant, I will succeed and I look forward to competing at the very highest levels in golf. Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball? Who cannot be inspired by the Jatanugarn sisters from Thailand? With humility, determination and such impressive swings akin to Laura Davis. My favourite four ball would need to include contrasting personalities such as Donald Trump, Gandhi and Winston Churchill.
A quotation from my father means I practice 1¼ hours every day. ie “Success is just a matter of luck – ask any failure”. You can use the excuse of not enough time, but for me, I create time when it is needed in spite of succeeding as a straight grade A student at a grammar school. Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have? To take advantage of the harsh winter, I have been working on my swing with one of the world’s most successful coaches. Monitoring results starts in the car returning back from a competition with a thorough lessons learnt exercise to more statistical analysis using Golf Data Lab (GDL). What are your goals for 2019 and beyond? Of course I want to play well in national competitions, but coming second or third
still means I have lost – I play golf to win and my handicap will take care of itself. What advice would you give to young players just starting on their journey in golf? Whether you want to make a career out of golf or play it as a hobby, to succeed in either (for me) the motivator is enjoyment. The more you enjoy it, the more you’ll practise, the more you practise, the more success; the more success, the more enjoyment. Finally, what are your other interests when you are not playing golf? Although time is tight in order to secure a scholarship in USA to study medicine I enjoy most competitive activities, but winning with modesty.

JUNIOR NEWS
BRILLIANT BURHILL JUNIORS
CLAIM PRESTIGIOUS HOME NATIONS TITLE The Burhill junior golf team returned home as champions after claiming a hard-earned triumph in the Home Nations Inter-Club Junior Team Golf Championship at Morgado Golf & Country Club in the Algarve, Portugal.
T
he team held their nerve over four days of competitive match play to claim the club’s first international victory, beating off competition from the best junior teams from England, Wales and Scotland. Qualifying for the event as runners-up in the England National Finals, Burhill’s victory represents the culmination of months of hard work and dedication from the talented young players and their coaches. The championship final was an allEnglish affair, with Burhill prevailing with a 3.5-2.5 win against their compatriots from Huddersfield who had previously pipped them to top spot in the England National finals. Speaking about the team’s performance, Burhill junior organiser, Angie Crockett said: “The team were a credit all week to their parents, to Burhill and to the game of golf. I had so many compliments about the way they played the game, their professionalism,
22
sportsmanship and etiquette on and off the course. I’m a very proud junior organiser and parent!” Team captain, Sasha Crockett, was awarded the Paul Casey Award for the best category 1 player after she remained unbeaten all week with three wins and a half from her four matches; the only player in the field to achieve that. “What a team, what a week. I could not be prouder of the fantastic performance the whole team put in over the tournament,” she said. “We had an amazing week, played some spectacular golf and made lots of friends on and off the course.” The Steve Redgrave Award for the best category 2 player went to Ben Wilson and Jess Adams was also recognised for her sterling performances with the trophy for Best Performing Girl. After the presentation of the individual awards, the Burhill juniors went up as a
team to collect their overall accolades – they all received a Cleveland wedge, balls, towels and individual keepsake trophies. Dubravka Griffiths, General Manager at Burhill Golf Club, commented on the success of the team: “We are so proud of the performance of our young players and everything that they have achieved this season. “At Burhill we invest significant amounts into our Junior Development Programme each year which is essential for us to help grow and promote the game. It’s brilliant to see that this investment is paying off and leading to fantastic success stories such as this.” The full team consisted of: Sasha Crockett, aged 16 (Captain); David Gurr, aged 18; Jess Adams, aged 17; Matthew Hawke, aged 15; Thomas Hawke, aged 15; Harley Yates, aged 15; Elliot MacGregor, aged 15 and Ben Wilson, aged 14.

PUTTING – THE POWER OF 3… Making putting practice fun and effective with PGA Professional Sam Truman
P
utting practice for most golfers can be a bland process and sometimes gets neglected all together. A few tees around a hole and a few random putts across the green, most golfers don’t practice with enough purpose and most importantly it’s not fun. By adding some simple structure
and effective training aids, your putting practice can be just as engaging as your driving range sessions. By following my rule of 3 you’ll have plenty of tasks to get your teeth into... Simply categorise putting into 3 key factors: We need the ability to start the ball on our chosen start line. We need
to be able to control the pace and overall distance our golf ball travels. And finally, we need to be proficient in analysing the slope and undulation of the green (Green Reading). START LINE – CREATE YOUR OWN STATION For the most effective start line practice, always refer to straight lines. Don’t get too caught up on going to a hole. Make your station simple, but tough. Making life a little more difficult for yourself in practice will only help you improve your scores on the course in competition. Kit: String lines, chalk lines, gates and tees etc. See pictures 1, 2, 3 and 4 Remember! “Feedback is key, however infuriating it may be.” Left are some combinations of start line stations. One of the best training aids for pace control are ghost holes. They create little to no resistance on the golf ball, and will give you feedback on the pace of the ball regardless of whether the ball goes in the hole or not. If you’re wondering where to get some visit www.visioputting.com Kit: Ghost hole, tees Set up: N S E W Tees at 6ft and 12ft Scoring: Your challenge is to hole every putt (roll over the ghost hole) but finish the ball a set distance past the ghost hole (I would suggest between 12 – 18 inches past). tee if your ball rolls over the ghost hole and finishes within 3 inches of the tee past the hole. See how many putts it takes you to complete all of the tee locations? See pictures 5 and 6 GREEN READING – SPIRIT LEVEL Using a spirit level on the practice putting green is a great way to give yourself accurate feedback as to how much break is on a putt and whether a putt has more break at the start or at the end of a putt. PUTTENHAM GOLF CLUB CELEBRATING A MAJOR MILESTONE
2019 sees Puttenham Golf Club celebrate its 125th Anniversary. The Club has certainly come a long way since the Lord of Puttenham Manor gave permission to a group of Army Officers, Charterhouse School Masters and local businessmen to form a golf club on his land at Puttenham Heath in 1894.
P
uttenham Golf Club is still to this day owned by its members and run with its members interests in mind but is also welcoming to visiting golfers who come to experience the special brand of Puttenham hospitality. The golf club has many events and competitions planned over the course of the year to mark this milestone, however probably one of the most popular decisions has been to set the full membership subscription at just £1,250 (not just for new members but for existing members as well) and this price is fixed for a three year period. In an age of increasing subscription costs year on year Puttenham Golf Club has definitely bucked the trend
26
and in so doing has allowed its members, both new and old, to have some degree of certainty over their golf expenditure during the Brexit saga and into the future. So, what exactly makes Puttenham unique in golfing circles? Well firstly, Puttenham is rightly proud of its golf course with a mix of woodland and heathland, set in amongst the beautiful Surrey Hills. Over the years the course has undergone several transformations and was extended in the early 90s to the 6220 yard par 71 layout that is in play today. Its predominantly sandy soil allows play to continue all year
round, and with the recent investment of £66,000 in restoration work on existing drainage routes, the course truly is one for all seasons. Fairway watering serviced from its own borehole also helps the club maintain its green fairways even in the hottest of summers, as was experienced in 2018. The signature hole of the golf course must surely be the 12th where during April shades of Augusta National appear as you tee off over water amongst the colourful rhododendrons and azaleas. In fact, the trio of holes of the 11th, 12th and 13th are a real ‘Amen Corner’ challenging even the most experienced golfer.

Secondly, Puttenham has an excellent way of organising play during the week and at weekends, which means that if you are looking for a club that really helps you integrate and find new friends to play with, you couldn’t make a better choice. A series of roll-ups take place that all club members are welcome to take part in. Puttenham Golf Club uses the terminology ‘tables’ to describe its roll ups, a terminology unique to Puttenham that dates back to when the club was first formed. Back then a member would sit at the ‘clubhouse table’ and wait for fellow members to arrive, players would write names onto scorecards and at
SURREY GOLF MAGAZINE
five to the hour would draw cards into fourballs. Those fourballs would then head to the 1st tee to tee off in the order they had been drawn out. If that five to the hour happened to be 8am then that group would be dubbed the ‘8am table’ and this tradition is still upheld today. There are numerous table groups that meet regularly throughout the week making arranging a game very simple. This system of play has helped many new members feel part of the club at an early stage of their membership and has also assisted them in making many new friends. Thirdly, is the wealth of experience that exists within the club’s staff, many
of the senior staff have worked at the club for well over 20 years with others closing in on that number. Never complacent, the enthusiasm and positive attitude of the team perhaps explains the warm friendly welcome you always receive at Puttenham, whether you are a first-time visitor or a long standing member. Last and most importantly, the membership. A diverse cross section from the business and working worlds, no cliques, just a friendly but fairly competitive bunch of like minded golfers who all relish the challenge of golf, whilst enjoying the camaraderie and friendship of their fellow members.

PILATES
Lower your handicap with Pilates for golf! 15 years ago Linda Segerstam was told she should not play golf again. Persistent back injuries were a huge problem, but instead of hanging up her clubs for good she took up Pilates. She is now a better golfer, injury free and has made teaching Pilates for Golf her career. Here David Bartlett, PGA head professional at Bulbury Woods Golf Club, experiences his first Pilates for golf lesson.
D
avid and I spent a rainy afternoon at the golf club going through a series of exercises. The first thing we looked at was alignment of joints and whether David was moving freely in the spine and legs. This was checked in a standing position as well as lying on the back, on the side, on the front and four point kneeling. These positions are the starting points for the actual exercises. Depending on your individual needs, the exercises are then mixed up to improve your flexibility, mobility and strength. David and I started with some warm up exercises that you can do on the golf course holding onto your golf
Keep the spine and hips upright, step into a backward lunge, back heel off the floor

bag. We worked on Pilates squats to activate muscles and lunge position with side reach to lengthen and warm up muscles. The idea is that you don’t hold positions in Pilates for too long but keep moving to work the full range of movement of muscles. David mentioned he was tight in his shoulders so we added an exercise called Dart to get the muscles on the back to activate and muscles in front of the shoulders to release. This particular exercise starts lying down on your front, looking down with your legs straight and arms by your side. You then lift your head, chest and arms with a breathing pattern to aid the movement.
Add a side reach to lengthen more of the front hip muscles and oblique side muscles
Linda: “So David, how was your first Pilates lesson”? David: “It was a bit of an eye opener! I could feel my muscles working with what felt like such small movements. I consider myself quite fit but when I was doing the Dart exercise my whole body was shaking. I hardly felt I was moving at all but it was definitely doing something.” Linda: “What do you think was the most important thing to remember?” David: “I think the breathing is such a major aspect, I kept forgetting to breathe, which sounds crazy! I think after just a few sessions with yourself I would learn that pretty quickly. I do strength and conditioning to supplement my golf

PILATES
IS PILATES FOR ME? • Easy to start • Effective • Inexpensive • No equipment • Lengthen playing life but flexibility and core strength are particular weaknesses for me. I think I would benefit massively from Pilates.” Linda: “Well done, it looked good!” The exercises will not only improve David’s game but will also help him understand his clients better. KEEP FIT FOR GOLF I set up my company, The Intelligent Core, in 2014 to teach golfers how to keep injury free, get stronger and move better with Pilates training. I do talks and demonstrations at golf clubs and golf industry events. The audience usually gets onboard once they understand how the exercises can improve their golf game. Pilates,

More intense version of the backward lunge keeping the back leg straight and heel off the floor, reaching the arm slightly behind you
group or individual sessions, at golf clubs can keep both members and staff injury free and playing more golf! There has been a big change in the golf industry in the last couple of years with more golfers adding Pilates, yoga and strength conditioning to keep fit for golf, and the likes of Rory McIlroy and Colin Montgomery embracing Pilates (reluctantly at first!) helps create awareness. Golf is a more athletic sport than you would think and being physically prepared helps avoid injury and creates stamina to last 18 holes. It can be tricky to figure out what exercise will actually improve your golf so the key is to tone the whole body so all muscles work together and then identify some key areas. We know that lower back pain is very common for golfers, so strength and flexibility above and below is a good place to start. Increasing core strength with Pilates can improve hip rotation, range of motion in the shoulders and back stability, as it encourages weak muscles to strengthen and tight muscles to loosen up. I love that Pilates works all my muscles, is easy on the joints, and improves my posture. I feel taller, the pace of my golf swing has improved and not to forget, longer drives!
I am based at the ZH Pilates Pavilion studio at Imber Court Sports Grounds in Surrey and currently teach classes at several golf clubs including: Coombe Wood, Wimbledon Park, Surbiton, Tyrrells Wood, Effingham, The Wisley and workshops at Roehampton Club, Foxhills and Reigate Hill. Linda Segerstam is the founder of The Intelligent Core specialised in teaching Pilates movement training for golf. She has worked with major sports and corporate brands for 20 years. She is also a writer, public speaker and PGA level 1 golf coach. Linda worked with Body Control Pilates, the largest Pilates teaching organisation in Europe, developing the Pilates for Golfers teaching programme. Linda is a brand ambassador for Honma golf and Duca del Cosma golf shoes. bunker play! A
s with many of golf challenges, the key to success with bunker play is to understand how to use the club to complete the task in hand... the fun then lies in exploring the multiple options available to you to make the club work!
PART 3: BUNKER PLAY
CONCEPT
The bunker... To some this sand filled hazard is a preferred alternative to heavy greenside rough – but for many this beast conjures up fear and anxiety before they even step inside!
For a standard green side bunker shot from a good lie the task is to get your club to bottom out under the ball in the sand with enough loft and speed to clear the bunker lip and carry the ball the desired distance. As discussed in our last feature on chipping, one of the key design features of modern day wedges is the ‘bounce’ on the sole of the club. With the soft sandy surface it is essential that as the club enters and moves through the sand under the ball that the bounce is correctly engaged to prevent the club from naturally
wanting to excessively dig in, deloft and slow down. SET UP To keep the loft of the club facing the target (ensuring that you swing towards it) and to maximise the effect of the bounce you must ensure that for every degree you ‘open’ the face (to increase the loft) you lower the shaft plane by the same amount (see the images below).

SWING DRILL...
To assist with lowering the shaft and creating an effective approach in to the ball, take a slightly wider stance than usual, screwing your feet in (both to feel the how much sand you have to work with and to lower your swings natural base under the resting height of the ball). SWING To get the feel of maintaining loft and bounce both as you swing the club away from the ball and also through impact try this exercise: Rest some sand of the face of the golf club at address and see if you can slowly swing it back away from the ball without the sand falling off, repeating the same task as you swing through the impact area. Now try and replicate this motion with the ball in play – but remember, you’ll require a healthy size swing to generate sufficient speed to get the ball out. TEST YOUR SKILLS! Once you have understood the basic concept of the bunker shot, one of the best ways to explore your technique and develop some skill is try and play the greenside splash shot with various clubs in the bag – not just your wedges! Have a go at the ‘through the bag challenge’ and see how far you can progress up the set with your wedges and irons. Start with your most lofted club and see how far you can progress up through your bag getting the ball in to your target area (see the images 1 to 4 right)!

at the TPI was fantastic, especially in the putting studio. After returning from the US I decided to start my schedule with a couple of warm up events on the Portugal Golf Tour at Amendoeira which were very useful to asses where my game was at. The O’Connor and Faldo courses are a good test, especially in the surprisingly windy, cold and rainy conditions we faced. The fields in these Algarve Tour events are always strong, with many seasoned Challenge Tour and Main Tour players’ fine
tuning their swings before their seasons start. I was happy with my results – tied 11th and 4th with scores of -2 in both tournaments and it felt good to be competing again for the first time this year. It was excellent preparation for my first European Tour event of the year the following week at The Magical Kenyan Open in Nairobi. I was pleased with a two under par 69 to open my account but struggled on the back 9 of the second round, eventually finishing with a 75 to make the cut on the number. This was my first cut made on the full tour so it was a pleasing milestone! I shot level par over the weekend to finish tied 62nd of the 79 players to make the cut and was happy with this, considering it was the first serious event of the year at a course unfamiliar to me. Kenya was a very eye opening place too, with police escorts to and from the course from the hotels, driving past huge favelas and spending a bunch of time with my caddie, Njenga who was walking 5km to the course every day it made me really appreciate how lucky I am to live in Surrey and do what I do everyday. Although the tournament does not count towards the Challenge Tour Order of Merit it should be another perfect week of preparation in similar conditions to those to be expected in Samsun, Turkey in late April for the opening Challenge event. My season will then be fully underway! It’s an exciting time ahead for me, but as mentioned this start has made me appreciate how privileged I am to be representing Walton Heath Golf Club and have such a great team behind me.

The awards are piling up for the Dorset Golf Resort, now having been rated a Top 100 Golf Resort by two separate bodies two years in a row. When interviewed General Manager Graham Packer puts their success down to two things: “We are so fortunate to have a great 27 holes of

championship golf designed by the renowned Martin Hawtree, he was also designer of Trumps Dunes course in Aberdeen Scotland (who rates him as the No.1 course designer in the world!) We keep investing money in the course so that it plays better each year, rather than just maintaining its standard. The popularity of our Luxury log homes for groups of 4+ makes us a unique destination, as golfers can stay together in a luxurious house to enjoy each other’s company more than the traditional hotel room set up”. In the last few years The Dorset Golf Resort has become a popular destination and for many a firm yearly fixture, it’s no wonder why the resort boasts 65% repeat business with past guests returning up to 15 years in a row! With 14 luxury log homes and cottages and 27 holes of championship golf, the resort is not a small one and certainly is up there when it comes to places to stay and play in the UK. Not to mention Dorset is a great place to visit golfing or not! Breaks start from £74.95pp and you can take advantage of a ‘FREE Upgrade Thursday’ promotion if you want a 1 night break in a 5* log home (groups of 4 or more). www.dorsetgolfresort.com

dilemma AWKWARD ATHLETIC
The miserably mean dimensions permitted for carry-on baggage on my budget airline flight to Faro presented me with an awful dilemma on a recent trip to glorious Quinta do Lago... By Clive Agran
S
hoes take up a disproportionate amount of space and so I normally pack golf shoes and of course wear one pair of outdoor shoes on the flight. On this occasion, however, I was scheduled to play tennis as well as golf but packing two pairs of shoes was out of the question, so which should have priority? Although I possess a rather fetching pair of trainers that could conceivably be tolerated on, say, a municipal pitchand-putt facility, I would worry about their acceptability on such revered tracks as the three impressive courses at Quinta do Lago. And the last thing

anyone wants when playing golf is to run foul of the dress code and be reprimanded, not to say humiliated. Despite the fact that it’s about 20 years since I last hit a top-spin lob in anger, I’m reasonably certain that tennis is far more forgiving than golf when it comes to apparel. Having said that, I nevertheless doubt that spikes would be appreciated on the excellent clay courts at Quinta do Lago. What further complicated matters was that I would be sharing the court with Judy Murray who, having inflicted something similar onto the feet of Anton du Beke a couple of
years back on Strictly Come Dancing, would probably prefer not to have her feet spiked by an ungainly partner improperly shod. Before I explain why someone as famous as she would deign to continued on page 48

share a baseline with me, I should reveal that, after much agonising, I packed my golf shoes and travelled in tasteful blue shoes that, although not something Mr Federer would ever pull on, wouldn’t raise too many disapproving eyebrows at the LTA were they ever to learn of my ‘code violation’. Judy and I were there to celebrate the completion of phase one of The Campus, a collection of first-class sporting facilities that will appeal to top-level athletes such as I (Are you joking? – Ed). As well as the quality clay courts, there’s a superb gymnasium with all the very latest
equipment, a magnificent full-sized football pitch that can accurately simulate the playing conditions at any top-flight ground, mountain bikes to explore inviting trails, a fabulous spa and a splendid outdoor heated swimming pool. It’s a state-of-theart facility that will attract top-class athletes as well be enjoyed by lessaccomplished sports’ enthusiasts. It also reinforces Quinta do Lago’s claim to be the premier golf and residential development in the Algarve. But I sense what you really want to know is how I got on at the tennis.
Although I may be wrong about the latter, no-one remarked on my improper footwear and I think Judy was impressed with my backhand. What I did discover in an exclusive post-match interview with her is that Jamie is a better golfer than Andy and played off a handicap of three when he was only 16.
QUINTA DO LAGO Since its inception in 1972, Quinta do Lago has been at the forefront of international golf, hosting eight Portuguese Opens as well as numerous other international tournaments. Home to three world-class golf courses, the resort also boasts a wealth of cutting-edge practice facilities. Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park and located just 15 minutes from Faro airport, Quinta do Lago offers residents and guests an unparalleled location benefiting from a year-round temperate climate, a variety of lifestyle pursuits and a strong sense of community. ECCO® GOLF UNVEILS AN EVOLUTION IN CLEATED PERFORMANCE WITH ECCO STRIKE Leading golf footwear innovator, ECCO GOLF, has unveiled an exciting addition to its cleated lineup – ECCO STRIKE A result of the company’s commitment to designing golf shoes that provide performanceenhancing grip, the new ECCO STRIKE design is defined by an improved spiked outsole which features a rotational line that compliments the natural movement of the foot throughout the swing. The sole combines strategically positioned ZARMA-TOUR® spikes with a series of hybrid cleats – a concept that’s engineered to provide increased room for dynamic traction, as well as reducing the overall weight of the shoe. The hybrid elements, including a rotation line on the toe, are complemented by the ZARMATOUR® spikes which utilise six flexible, anti-clogging comfort legs to maximise traction and durability. The re-engineered cleat configuration represents an evolution in spiked golf shoe
performance, with the overall stability of the shoe further increased by a more optimised FLUIDFORM™ platform, providing a finely-tuned balance of cushioning and rebound. ECCO STRIKE is crafted from the company’s own performancedriven ECCO YAK leather, providing an extra strong, durable and modern upper material with a twotone surface that’s both sporty and water-repellent. Additional features of ECCO STRIKE include: • 100% GORE-TEX® waterproof protection
• The option of a BOA® closure system for optimum fit • A two-component direct-injected P.U/T.PU outsole which creates a highly comfortable, hard-wearing playing platform • A microfibre heel pad to ensure a secure, snug fit while walking, and throughout the swing, with additional collar padding providing further wearing comfort • A removable, washable Ortholite® foam inlay sole which provides long-term cushioning and enhanced breathability, as well as the option of extra width when you take it out • A premium textile lining which provides a soft, comfortable inshoe experience www.eccoshoesuk.com
