STEVE MCNEILL Despite the ongoing restrictions and the lockdown at the start of the year, it is so wonderful that golf is now back being played, the enjoyment by club members and visitors alike is clear to see when I visit clubs, as I am now allowed to do so.
I
am also very pleased to report that memberships at clubs continue to grow with more and more people taking up this great game of ours. However, Covid-19 regulations are currently still in place and need to
be followed, which I encourage all to adhere to, until such time as they are removed. It is important for players to remain safe, likewise your families, not to mention your club, who could be hit with a large fine if rules are ignored. In my last ramble I mentioned that we managed to re-schedule many of the County Knock Outs, County Card Events and Championships, these are still going ahead, the entry details can be found on the Surrey County Golf website. Talking of the new website, the feedback received so far is excellent, especially regards the County Card App, along with being able to enter and pay on-line for the many events we run, it is so straightforward to use. Social media is another area we are

looking to assist us to improve our communications, Instagram and Twitter being our two main platforms, where we regularly advertise our upcoming events news. As said before, if you have feedback regards any improvements we could make, or something you would like to see on our website, please let us know and we will give it serious consideration as we are keen to continue to improve the site. The World Handicapping System continues to be an interesting challenge, there are without doubt areas that need to be improved, with further developments required such as the WHS communicating with the systems around the world, which is an absolute must. In saying that, there are many positives regards the system, and like any change, it takes time to get an understanding of how used to use it. But I have no doubt it will become second nature as time goes on. May your drives be straight, your approaches be pinpoint, and your putts holed.

MATTHEW KIM DEFENDS HIS U12 TITLE by Sam Wood
I
t was a cold, wet and windy Sunday when 30 players took to the first tee for the Surrey U12 Championships – Paul Casey Trophy, with not one player making a fuss, just keen to get out onto the course. The format for the tournament was 18 holes scratch stroke play with two handicap prizes up for grabs. Handicaps ranged from 4 to 23 and some fantastic shots were witnessed. First Handicap prize was won by Yakov Vorobyev (Wentworth) with a net 64 on countback from Ruaan Vamadevan (Wimbledon Park). Now, onto the main event! In third place with an impressive gross 80 was Finlay Fergusson (Burhill), in second place with a fantastic gross 77 was Yakov Vorobyev (Wentworth). And in first place, retaining his U12 crown was Matthew Kim (Walton Heath) with an incredible gross 72!
Due to current restrictions and poor weather, no official presentation was able to take place. A huge thanks goes out to Chobham Golf Club for once again hosting this wonderful event, even more so during these tough times. Surrey Golf would also like to thank the bar staff, running back and forth from the bar taking and delivering orders and the greenkeepers for maintaining the course to a great standard during this terrible spell of weather. Thanks also to Phil Wilson, Club Captain and Terry Casey our Surrey President who braved the elements to start the boys off. And my final thanks go to our volunteers, as I am sure everyone will agree, these events would just not run without their valuable support. Congratulations once again to Matthew Kim!

RIDING HIGH IN AMERICA Surrey’s Ben Partridge is named Nicklaus National Player of the Year
B
en Partridge is the 2021 Nicklaus Award winner for NJCAA Division I men’s golf Hutchinson Community College freshman golfer Ben Partridge was named NJCAA Division I winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award on Sunday. The Jack Nicklaus Award is given to the golfer named National Player of the Year in all three NJCAA and NCAA divisions and NAIA. The announcement was made on Sunday during the final round of The Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, a tournament created by the Hall of Fame and multi-major tournament winner Nicklaus. The 2020-21 season has been extraordinary for Partridge, a freshman from London, England. Back in May, Partridge helped the Blue Dragon men’s golf team win the NJCAA team championship. Then Partridge won a four-hole playoff with teammate Harry Crockett to claim the NJCAA individual national championship. Partridge is a first-team NJCAA AllAmerican. Partridge had a season stroke average of 71.2 over 29 rounds played over the combined fall and spring seasons.

Over the final three tournaments in 2021 – the KJCCC Championship, District III/Region VI and the NJCAA Championship – Partridge averaged 70.8 strokes per round with 7 of 10 rounds shot under par. In addition to winning the NJCAA Individual title, Partridge won the NJCAA National Preview, also at The
Rawls Course in Lubbock – site of the 2021 national championships. He was Jayhawk Conference regular-season co-champion with teammate Charlie Crockett. Partridge had two tournament titles, six Top-3 finishes and placed in the Top 10 in 9 of 10 total tournaments this season.

125th Anniversary Throughout 2021 the club is proudly celebrating 125 years of Golf. From the origins as a 9-hole course known as ‘Binton Links’ the club has come a long way to its present status as a championship venue. AADAM SYED WINS THE SURREY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP The 2021 Surrey Amateur Championship was held on the sensational Sunningdale Old Course over the weekend of May 28-30.
T
he condition of the course was unbelievably perfect given the poor weather over the last couple of months. Fortunately, Spring decided to arrive in earnest for the Friday qualifying rounds, with light winds and temperatures nudging towards 20c. The fast and undulating greens would see the scoring difficult with only three players returning under par scores in Round 1, 68 from Harry Crockett, 69 from Aadam Syed, who both recently returned from a successful year in the USA and 69 from the current County Champion, Terry Nicholls. Round 2 proved equally testing with Aadam adding a 71 for a level par total seeing him qualify as top seed for the weekend. Three time champion David Corben took 2nd spot with rounds of 73 + 70, with Demi Di Matteo, Justin Chan and Terry Nicholls on the same total taking the next 3 spots being decided on countback. 13 year old sensation Kris Kim was 15th qualifier on +6, with a playoff for the final spot being won by a birdie on the Par 5 First hole from Mark Booker, who is a past Champion and former County Captain. The Saturday morning was chilly to start, but warmed up by mid-morning, with some excellent golf being played ending with the afternoon quarter final line up as: • Aadam Syed v Daniel Rosevear • Terry Nicholls v Lewis Hinton • Demi Di Matteo v Sam Hessian • Harley Yates v David Corben In the top match Aadam would continue his good form in beating local man Daniel 5&4, whilst in match 2 Terry would just edge past his Surrey teammate Lewis. Sunningdale member Sam would see

a lead of 5up after 10 holes disappear to be 1up playing the 18th however a holed chip shot from behind the 18th green by Demi would see them go into extra holes. Sam held his nerve with a birdie and would advance to the Semi Final where he would face U18 squad player Harley who played magnificently to defeat the 3 time Champion David 3&2. Sunday saw similar conditions to the previous day warming up after a cool start, with Aadam and Terry exchanging holes all morning with there never being more than a 1 hole lead, Aadam winning the closing hole for the narrowest of victories. The 2nd semi-final saw Sam playing steady match play golf with Harley being unable to repeat his form from the previous day, Sam joining Aadam in the Final with a 3&2 win. A healthy gallery watched the final as Aadam sprinted to a 2up lead with birdies on both opening holes including a holed chip on the difficult 2nd hole. Halved holes were exchanged in par before Sam hit back with a great birdie on the 5th. Aadam was 3up after the short 8th as Sam missed putts for par there and on the previous green. Sam cut Aadam’s lead back to 2 with a solid par on the long 10th after Aadam made his first error of the final by driving into a fairway bunker. Both finalists holed good par putts on the 12th before Sam won a battle of long putting on the 14th to reduce the arrears to 1. Both made a bogey on the long par 3 before Sam hit his tee shot into the left fairway bunker on the 16th to allow Aadam to 2 putt to go dormie 2 up. Both tee shots split the fairway on the downhill 17th, where Aadam narrowly missed for birdie and Sam ensured the
match would go to the final hole with a fine approach and birdie putt from 6ft. Both played nice approaches off good drives on the 18th, Aadam a couple of feet closer than Sam but Sam having an uphill putt, which to the delight of the Sunningdale members around the green, he holed. Aadam was left looking at a putt of around 12ft down the sloping green to avoid going to extra holes. In what seemed an eternity after the ball left his putter, the ball dropped in the front of the hole on the last roll and Aadam was Champion for 2021. This title added to his other County Championship wins at u12,14,16 & 18 age groups. Only the Colts Championship has so far evaded him but as he said after the Final, “I’m working on that!” A truly remarkable feat. Well done, Aadam, and congratulations to Sam on a great run to the Final. The Surrey Amateur Club Championship was won by the host club Sunningdale, the three victorious players were Sam Hessian, William Shucksmith and Jacob Austin with a combined score over 36 holes of 445. he Guildford Alliance the Surrey based Pro-am series has just completed the 2020/21 season which owing to the Pandemic sadly ended up only playing 5 fixtures as opposed to the planned 19 events. The 2021-2022 will celebrate our Centenary event and it is a testament to all who have organised and played in the Guildford Alliance over the first
100 years that the Alliance is one of the most successful Golfing Alliance’s and playing on so many of the South East’s top Golf Courses. KEYS TO JUNIOR GOLF DEVELOPMENT PGA Professional, Sam Truman, explains: How to introduce juniors to the game in the best way possible?
T
he game of golf can be so rewarding for people of all ages. The fresh air, the love hate relationship with hitting the golf ball effectively and most importantly it can be a great social game. But introducing people into the game can be so troublesome, especially juniors. Whether it be restrictions on when juniors can play or the cost of getting into the game, helping juniors enter the game in an effective way can encourage a life long love affair with the game of golf. In this article, I’ll take you through

some ways to introduce a child/ teenager into the game of golf: THE FIRST EXPERIENCE
area. It’s considered tradition that golfers have to earn their stripes on the practice ground before they can go onto the golf course.
We will never forget the first time we play the game. And I’m sure golfers across the world will have very different stories when it comes to their first experience. Here’s my guide to the first experience of golf for juniors (The 3 P’s): PLAY Golf is one of the only sports whereby the game can be so distinctly split between a practice area and a game

How often do you hear parents or coaches give feedback such as ‘slow down’ or ‘keep your head down’? Poor feedback can be really detrimental to a juniors development. For instance, an early comfort in swinging the club fast can help produce lots of distance in later years. If you always encourage a junior to swing slowly, guess what; that could be a habit that is really hard to adapt in future years. The skills that should be a priority in the early development phases are: ON COURSE PLAY range it’s very easy for a parent or coach to give constant feedback on golf swing or body movement. WOMEN’S GOLF DAY 2021 SETS NEW GLOBAL RECORDS A week of fun, starting with ringing the new york stock exchange opening bell and culminating with thousands attending live events.

ow in its 6th year, Women’s Golf Day (WGD) kicked off with an early start yesterday with its first ever event in New Zealand, one of the three new countries to join the WGD Community in 2021. The famous red & white of WGD was everywhere to be seen on social media continuing the tradition that has brought the event to over 1000 officially registered locations in over 80 countries. With #WomensGolfDay reaching 72.4M unique users, generating 87M impressions across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the June 1st numbers simply speak for themselves! Women’s Golf Day is unique; a one-day sporting and community celebration event, uniting women and girls through golf across the globe

for 24 hours straight transcending race, religion, language, geography or economic status. This capped off an exciting week that started with the ringing of the opening bell at the NYSE and WGD Palooza, an online event everyone could attend. “From the first event in Papakura, New Zealand to the last in Princeville, Hawaii, women and girls have been sharing really special moments because of golf,” explains Elisa Gaudet Founder of Women’s Golf Day. “WGD has increased in popularity year after year by engaging men and women and brands. This year we have really seen the power of partnership and what we can accomplish collectively. I am truly humbled by the individuals, locations, partners and organizations who continue to be committed to Women’s Golf Day and thank them for everything that they bring to the game and our events.” Japan and Argentina were also new host countries for 2021. Golfers still managed to join in the fun, even in places still restricted by COVID-19, joining people around the world showing their love of the game by posting photos using the hashtag #womensgolfday. 2021 has seen another milestone smashed as the total number of participating venues reached 941, exceeding previous records. A staggering number of facilities including PGA TOUR Superstores, Topgolf venues, driving ranges, and traditional golf courses have now hosted Official WGD events. The diverse range of opportunities to learn and play golf offered through WGD undoubtedly contributes to its success. Elisa explains, “Golf is not a onesize-fits-all sport anymore. Women want options and thanks to our retail
and brand partners, as well as the locations who host our official events, we can showcase golf at its very best. Women who have never played golf are beginning to see that in the 21st century it is a sport for everyone. This is a really exciting time in golf’s evolution, and we are proud of the role we continue to play in making golf more accessible.” Each year WGD experiences impressive growth in participation figures, and location numbers as well as its social media exposure. CEMENT YOUR PRE-SHOT ROUTINE
and watch your game improve A good pre-shot routine creates certainty. When we feel certain our muscles relax and our breathing lowers. The opposite of this is uncertainly, which is best friends with stress...
W
hen we feel stressed or uncertain, our muscles tighten, our breathing moves up into the chest and we go into ‘fight or flight’ mode – none of this is conducive to hitting good golf shots!
When working with a player to create a pre-shot routine, I ask them to break it down into five stages:
dialogue. Perhaps you could remind yourself of a time that perfectly executed a similar shot to this one.
PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT
COMMIT
Assessing the lie of the golf ball, assessing the type of shot available to you and making a decision. Are you going to attack the flag? Are you going to lay up? Are you going to play a safety shot? Does the lie that you have allow you to do those things? This is a decision making stage and making a decision gives us certainly.
Our final stage of the pre-shot routine is to commit to the golf shot that we are about to hit. We’ve chosen the type of shot we are going to play based on our assessment of the surroundings, we’ve visualised what we want the shot to look like, we’ve rehearsed the swing and we’ve created certainty. Now all that is left to do is commit to the shot. Create your own pre-shot routine, it doesn’t have to be the same as mine. You might decide that you want to visualise the shot whilst addressing the ball or you may use your positive selftalk whilst rehearsing. The important thing is that you find a routine that works for you. And remember, it’s not a routine if you still have to think about it. Use your next range session to hit half as many balls as normal and go through the full motions of your pre-shot routine on every shot – I promise you that will be a better use of your time than whacking 50 divers!
VISUALISATION The power of visualisation has been proven in many different sports and is used by some of the most successful sports people in the world. Visualisation lends itself perfectly to golf. Here we are going to visualise the exact shot that we want to hit. It’s helpful to stand behind the ball whilst you do this and imagine the perfect ball flight. REHEARSE Often people swing a few practice swings before they hit the ball but rarely do they rehearse. In this stage, I’d like you to swing the club exactly as you will when you hit that perfect golf shot that you visualised. This should allow you to feel some of the feelings that you’ll feel when you hit the golf ball – creating more certainty. ADDRESS This is a really good opportunity to use your positive self talk or inner

REASONS WHY CLUB GOLFERS SHOULD BE LIFTING WEIGHTS
Compared to years gone by the modern game of golf has become a breeding ground for the more athletic player. By Sam Heffer
Here are 5 reasons why club golfers should be lifting weights too: REDUCE INJURY RISK As we know golf is a highly skilled game and to get better at it we need to be playing as much as we can. Often though the club golfer is uninspired to do so because of any number of niggles or injuries that can be linked to golf. Lifting weights safely is shown to have huge reduction on injury risk and as such gives greater opportunity to play and practice HIT THE BALL FURTHER

t seems that not a week goes by without the latest winner on tour singing the praises of their gym routine and the positive impact it’s had on their game whether that’s the big hitters like Bryson and Rory, career longevity like Lee Westwood, or more recently, Phil Mickelson who just made history at Kiawah Island by becoming the oldest player to lift a major trophy at the age of 50 whilst also possessing a 302.5 average driving distance. Whilst the best in the world are turning toward fitness work, and in particular ,strength training to help them compete on tour and put food on the table, the benefits of lifting weights for the club golfer should not be overlooked

It’s been shown that an increase of 3-4mph club head speed (CHS) can equate to potentially 10+ extra yards which for the club golfer can be a full club difference for second shots into Par 4s & 5s making scoring potentially easier. That increase of CHS can quite easily be achieved with a sensible block of strength training INCREASE MUSCLE MASS Club golfers can hugely benefit from an increase in muscle mass. Not only can larger muscles produce more force, but they are also much better at absorbing that force, meaning a reduction in the risk of injury. It’s important to note that larger muscles do not automatically mean ‘bodybuilder’ or ‘Bryson’. INCREASE STRENGTH Alongside the main benefit of reduced risk of injury, a stronger body also maximises the benefits of
speed training. Many golfers make the mistake of trying to swing faster before getting stronger. The problem is that this approach provides diminishing returns and can only take them so far. An increase in strength means an increase in the more available force (speed) you have making that speed training much more worthwhile REDUCE THE RISK OF AGE-RELATED DISEASE Starting to lift weights and strength train now can help with protecting against age-related disease in the future. Things like maintaining a healthy bone density and protecting against slips and falling over is a good idea for anyone looking forward to a long time golfing. The best news is that it’s never too late to start In summary, the club golfer can benefit hugely from lifting weights, not only from improving performance out on the course but more importantly, increase the years someone is able to play golf due to a much reduced injury risk Stronger in the gym.
