After possibly the longest winter in history, with golf being shut down for what felt like an eternity, the courses are finally open again... let’s hope they stay that way!

March 29th saw golfers back in action with all the courses fit to burst.

Membership is booming across the county with most clubs being at capacity. Hopefully, over the next few months we will see the opening up of UK golf breaks and away golf days.

STEVE MCNEILL Where do I start after the year of 2020! Just as the season was about to start this terrible virus appears and devastates thousands of families. Hopefully with the vaccines that are now being rolled out we will soon get back to something like normality.

I

must admit that when we went into the first lockdown with course closures, I honestly felt that some clubs would close forever, however as we now know the opposite happened, personally I could not be happier how wrong I was!

As we all know golf is a great form of exercise, especially for someone like me, who zig zags their way up a fairway, walking further than most! The incredible influx of new members when we came out of the first lockdown was unbelievable and it continues to be so.

The growth of membership across the county is now stronger than it has been for many, many years, which is wonderful and such positive news for our great game especially during these ongoing difficult times.

Despite Covid, I am pleased to report that we still managed to re-

6

schedule and play many of the County Knock Outs, County Card Events and Championships. Caroline and Sue in the office did a superb job, keeping on top of the administration with events running one minute, then either cancelled or rescheduled the next, and with the huge number of events we run in Surrey it was a challenge to say the least.

It is of course disappointing that courses have had to close again in early 2021, although if we must be closed, I would rather it be during the cold wet winter months if it means we can play during the spring and summer months.

In amongst all this the World Handicapping System came into place, a huge undertaking for all concerned but I will talk more about this in the next addition.

A real positive to come out of 2020 is the new Surrey Golf website. Whilst it is not a hundred percent complete yet, it is without doubt a vast improvement on the previous one, being much more user friendly. All events and results appear on the home page along with a live leader board, so everyone can keep tabs on the scores as they come in.

The plan for 2021 is to offer online entry for all male Surrey led competitions as well as online payment, so watch this space! Another improvement will be the introduction of an App for the County Card, one less piece of plastic to carry!

Finally, on a very sad note, we lost one of our most favourite people in golf, the wonderful Peter Alliss who was also the Patron of Surrey Golf.

Peter was always keen to come along and support our Surrey events when his diary allowed him to do so.

He had time for players of all ages, although some of our younger players parents had to explain who he was, which he found very amusing.

He was a lovely honest man, who never sat on the fence, some of his stories were legendary as well as very amusing if not a little risqué to say the least! Peter, you will be sorely missed by everyone.

May your drives be straight, your approaches pinpoint and your putts holed.

When did you start playing golf and who was your inspiration?

I started playing golf when I was 5. Both of my older brothers played, so they inspired me to pick up clubs from an early age.

Do you have a favourite player and who would be in your dream fourball?

My dream fourball would be Lexi Thompson (my favourite golfer), Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas.

What have been your career highlights so far?

Really it was my performance in the North of England U14 champs. It was a new course to me and most of the best U12’s and U14’s girls across the UK were taking part, so I was really pleased with how I played.

How often do you play/practice?

During the winter I play 18 holes twice a week and work on the range three times a

week. In the summer I obviously play a lot more. I also attend strength and conditioning classes twice a week too!

Is finding time to play whilst managing school/work etc difficult?

I’ve only just started secondary school so my homework load is quite manageable and does not impact my game currently. But I know this will change in the coming years.

Are there specific areas of your game that you work on and how do you monitor your results to try and identify any concerns you have?

I am working hard on my short game at the moment, as my coach keeps reminding me that it is a good place to save shots. I also monitor my overall progress through the Spider Golf app, which records my progression in general play and tells me the areas I need to improve in.

What are your goals for 2021 and beyond?

My goals are to qualify for some national golf competitions, like the English Girls, and perform well in them. Another target is to hopefully make the England South U18 regional squad in 2021.

What advice would you give to young players just starting on their journey in golf?

As with most things, just enjoy the game first. It’s a great way to spend time outside and exercise. You have to put the effort in if you want to progress but don’t go chasing your handicap when you’re very young.

The club is adopting England Golf’s new Women in Golf Charter and is currently working towards official accreditation.

FARNHAM TO HOST THE FIRST EVER ENGLAND GOLF MIXED CHAMPIONSHIP England Golf recently announced the addition of its first ever mixed-gender

championship to the calendar of events for the 2021 season.

The landmark tournament – the English Under 18 Championship – will see boys and girls tee it up alongside each other and compete for the one trophy at Farnham Golf Club, Surrey between 25-27 June, 2021.

The field of 132 players (66 boys and 66 girls) will go head-to-head over 72 holes of stroke play with no handicap or stroke allowances given.

The girls will play from separate tees from the boys, but this will be done in such a way as to make the scores comparable.

England girls’ squad player Lottie Woad (current handicap index -5.4) is a member at Farnham was pleased to hear the news and said; “This is something new and exciting and I can’t wait.”

LADIES ACADEMY Academy membership is ideal for those who are new to golf or returning after a long absence.

ECOBUNKER BRINGS CONSISTENCY AT FARNHAM

F

arnham Golf Club in Surrey is about three-quarters of the way through a substantial bunker renovation project using the EcoBunker synthetic edging solution, and general manager Ben Beagley says that club members are delighted with the results.

“We began working with EcoBunker in late 2016,” says Beagley. “At that time, there were at least three different styles of bunker on the course,

the result of work done over many years, and we were having significant problems with bunker faces washing out after rain, and the edges eroding.

Our site is sandy, so the erosion meant the bunker faces kept growing higher, and the edges would overhang the bunkers – which made it difficult for golfers to escape from them.”

Over four years, Farnham’s greenkeeping team has rebuilt an average of 10-12 bunkers per season using the EcoBunker solution to fix the edges. “We had help from EcoBunker in the first phase of construction, but our team got good at building them quite quickly, and we have not had problems with that since,” says Beagley. “We began by building a test bunker, and then moved on to the greenside bunkers around the course. At the end of this winter, we will have four holes to go to finish the course. We are working

with architect Steve Ridgway, who has opened our eyes somewhat, and given us more ambition for the course – the bunker work is tied into an overall course masterplan. We should be finished in another year or two, unless we decide to make dramatic changes to the holes, in which case we might only do one hole a year.

“Our greenkeeping team was keen to move away from steep sandy faced bunkers, because of washdown issues,” says Beagley. “Now, we are building revetted faces, typically about two feet high, although some of them are a fair bit deeper. We don’t have washout problems any more, and the sand we have chosen performs very well in the wet.”

Golf... it’s a numbers game

PGA Professional, Sam Truman, explains how to use data properly to understand your game and structure your practice efficiently

I

n this article we’re going to assess how you can use data in your own game to perhaps change how you look at your own game and change how your structure your range and short game practice.

SCORING DATA One of the best places to start when it comes to gathering data is by creating the habit of collecting data when you play (ideally in competition).

Gathering data when you play

competitively will start to reveal so much about your good rounds and equally will help you understand what breaks down in your bad rounds.

Start by keeping some basic stats.

Pick up a second scorecard before your round of golf and use that as your stats card (equally you can make and print one yourself). See if you can start with the following: How many fairways hit? If you miss a fairway, which way did it miss?

How many greens in regulation? If

you miss a green, how does it miss (long, short, left, right)?

What was the length of your first putt – and how many putts did you take from there to get in the hole?

There are plenty of mobile applications that will help you store all of this data nice and neatly for you and will help you target the weaker areas of your game.

KNOW YOUR SCORING ZONES A scoring zone is a range of distances (or clubs) that you will rely on the

As we all know, modern day sport has become a number crunching activity. Every kick, pass, hit and tactic are recorded. The most effective teams and athletes use this data to help them reflect on their performances and implement effective practice formats.

most for your approach shots onto the green. These zones will differ from person to person depending on how far you hit the ball and the courses that you play on.

To understand your own scoring zone and improve how you practice your shots within this zone try the following: • Make a note of the clubs that you use most frequently for your approach shots into a green. How often do you use those clubs in your practice?

• Is there a certain distance or club that you always prefer? Can you try and play the hole in a way that’s going to help you use that shot as often as possible, i.e. lay up further back or equally be more aggressive off the tee to access that club/distance.

STRUCTURING PRACTICE EFFECTIVELY By using data, you can very quickly structure your practice in a way that

will help you improve the areas of the game that matter the most. Let’s use an example for structuring a putting practice session: Here is a generic breakdown of the percentage of putts you hit from different distances from the hole – 3ft and in: 37% 3-5ft: 12% 5 - 10ft: 15% 10-15ft: 10% 15-25ft: 12% 25ft +: 15% By laying out the data in this way it’s pretty clear to see the areas that need to be prioritised.

Nearly 50% of your putts will be from 5ft and in! If you were to then structure a 30 minute practice session you would need to factor in using at least half of that time to holing out (<5ft).

The other half of the practice session can then be used to improve your control of pace from distance to help take the pressure off your short putting.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2021?

Understand the psychology of goal setting and give yourself the best chance of success with Jamie Burrows Goal setting is not just about having a target score in mind or wanting to be club champion. When we set effective goals we can really increase confidence, reduce anxiety and give ourselves the best chance of success.

A

s you think about your goals for the the coming year, consider having; Long-term goals – a target for the future that is achievable before the end of the year or before the golf season ends.

Intermediate goals – something that you want to achieve in the next 3 months, before the season really gets underway.

Short-term goals – a goal for your next practice session, game or competition.

It is really important that your goals are specific, measurable and not easily influenced by other people.

There are three types of goals in golf: outcome, performance and process. Having a combination of all goals to give the best chance of success.

OUTCOME GOALS Outcome goals are goals that focus on results and, unsurprisingly, outcomes.

An example would be ‘winning the club championship’.

One of the challenges with outcome goals is that you only ever have a partial control over achieving them and so often in our sport, they are also dependent on the performance of others. I suggest to my clients that short and mid-term goals should be performance or process based as you can have more control and influence over these. Performance and process goals can also be more flexible than outcome goals PERFORMANCE GOALS Goals that are performance orientated and are geared towards improvement based on past performance. For example ‘hit 11 greens in regulation’ or ‘have 36 putts’.

Tracking your stats on the course will help you to set performancetype goals. Performance goals are under your control and this will help develop confidence and improve your performance. You can directly link your performance goals to them achieving your outcome goal if you have a clear idea of the weakest and

strongest parts of your game. Focusing on performance goals rather than outcome goals during competitive play, reduces anxiety and increases confidence.

2020: A REVIEW I think I can speak for most people in saying that this has been a strange year. It would be hard to find anyone who hasn’t been greatly impacted by the pandemic.

For me, the year started with a lot of promise and excitement with a full Challenge Tour schedule meant to start off in South Africa, through Europe in the summer and then China at the seasons end, hopefully with a finish in Mallorca for the Grand Final.

The added bonus was the prospect of 20 spots being available for graduation to the European Tour rather than the top15 on the order of merit as in previous years. However, by the end of the year the schedule had been reduced from 26 events to just 11 and if truth be told we were fortunate to be able to play any professional golf at all.

The season began in South Africa with three new events co-sanctioned with the Sunshine Tour.

My first trip to this part of the world was a good experience, particularly as the events are going to be repeated in February 2021. The events in Limpopo (North of Johannesburg) Capetown and George were all enjoyable and I

managed to secure some valuable order of merit points in the final event – The Dimension-Data Pro-Am at Fancourt.

News of the pandemic was circulating by mid-February as we travelled back from South Africa and who could have predicted how the next few months would have shaped out.

Lockdown (1) saw golf courses and ranges all closed and so improvised practice facilities were set up in the garden and the short game was sharpened up with help from my coach Neil Matthews by zoom and video.

Whilst not anticipated at the start of the year, I tried to make the most of the enforced break and it did not seem to do my game too much harm.

The European Tour did an amazing job of getting us back out and playing by early summer, and between July and November we had 8 events, all

subject to strict Covid testing and tournament ‘bubble’ procedures. I must have taken around a dozen or more Covid tests during this period (sometimes both before and after arriving at venues) and although an unpleasant experience they kept coming back negative which meant I was cleared to travel and compete.

The strict measures were a necessary new fact of life on tour and the players were just grateful to be able to play again, even with all the other restrictions at individual events.

The strangest experience of the year was the first week of a ‘Double-header’ in Cadiz at the Challenge De España.

On arrival at the hotel after a full day’s travel I was contacted by the UK track and trace app as having come into contact with someone (unknown to me) who was positive for COVID-19.

I had to inform the tour immediately who subsequently withdrew me from the event and told me to self-isolate in my hotel room for 10 days!

It was a real blow because there hadn’t been an event for around a month since the Italian Challenge and I was really looking forward to competing.

It was rough spending the week in quarantine but with the help of some decent room service I managed to switch off with some Netflix and video catch ups with friends and family. I tried to keep somewhat sharp with drills in the room and in the end my game didn’t suffer too much as I managed a T21st finish in the Challenge De Cadiz the following week with only a day to prepare.

with my strongest performance of the year finishing T5th. The golf course, T Golf and Country Club near Palma, was of very high quality and I’m definitely looking forward to competing there in the future.

Mallorca is an awesome destination for golf and with temperatures in the mid-20s in mid-November it was a great place to get some late autumn /winter golf in. Having said that, I think we got quite lucky as last year’s event was a cold windy affair!

I finished 27th on the ‘Race to Majorca’ Order of Merit this year, an improvement on my 59th place rank in 2019. My Challenge Tour status will be the same in 2021 and I feel that I have learned a good deal from the limited number of events played this year, particularly in the southern hemisphere, which will stand me in

good stead when we return in early new year.

Let’s hope 2021 will bring a full schedule and the return of an opportunity to graduate up to the main tour.

After fully reviewing my year end stats I have plenty of things to work on over the winter and will be pushing for a strong 2021.

t’s no secret that long hitting makes it easier to shoot lower scores & thanks to Bryson DeChambeau taking so much of the golfing worlds attention in 2020, long hitting has never had more of a spotlight Whether you’re excited by what he’s doing or fall more into the purist camp there’s no denying that you can’t beat the feeling of sending one out there to an applause from your playing partners and for one reason or another we’re all craving a few extra yards That being said here are 5 common mistakes that I see made by golfers trying to hit bombs:

TRYING TO GET FASTER WITHOUT GETTING STRONGER

Speed sticks, light clubs, swinging two clubs together before going back to one, we’ve all done those once upon a time I’m sure. Sadly they’re not doing anything to gain extra speed rather a fancy tool that ‘unlocks’ speed potential you already have.

Increase the size of your power pool by heading to the weights room and (safely) build some strength.

TRYING TO COPY TOUR PROS

We’d all like to swing a club like Rory or Tiger but it’s important to remember that these guys have spent years honing their craft. Whilst there may be an ‘ideal’ swing position, trying to force your body into it can see a serious loss of power. Use a coach to find a swing that fits what your body can do or get help from a fitness coach to improve certain things like your hip and shoulder turn or core strength to help out.

LISTENING TOO MUCH TO AMATEUR ADVICE

Stop listening to tired old nonsense like “you’re lifting your head” or “trying to hit it too hard” from other mid to high handicappers and go and get a lesson to find out what you’re really doing wrong.

NEVER WARMING UP

Going from the car park to the first tee is not ideal preparation for longer hitting & by the time the 4th or 5th

come around your habits are set in for the day. Take just five minutes & a handful of exercises to prepare the body properly for the golf course & hit the ground running from the off.

CHOPPING & CHANGING TOO OFTEN

Improving your fitness, ball striking & hitting bombs takes time and repetition. You can’t take one YouTube tip one day and another one on a different day and expect to see improvements. Sure on the odd occasion you might ‘stumble across something’ but it very rarely sticks.
