EDITOR’S NOTE W

Hello Surrey, elcome to the April Issue of Surrey Rocks Magazine.

It was great to catch up on all Ronan Keating’s news for our celeb cover star interview this month, where he revealed all about his latest charitable causes, Surrey based golf (it is one of the best counties for courses btw!) and festivals he is headlining. We couldn’t resist showing our support for Ukraine when we saw Ronin’s blue cover pic this month. As the Rocks logo changes colour each month, I defy any Editor out there that would not have chosen yellow given the current situation? Our thoughts and prayers are with Ukraine at this difficult moment. I personally have 3 very good Ukrainian friends whose lives have been completely turned upside by this crisis. We are all hoping for peace soon. On a brighter note. If you are unsure where to go festival wise this year, read our indispensable guide on page 32 detailing the best of the best. There is something for everyone including family friendly festivals like Shynefest, to the best of dance at 51st State and no ‘Ultimate Festival Guide’ would be complete without Glastonbury, where Paul McCartney and Billie Eilish are among the headliners. Don’t forget to check out our Calendar on page 13 to find out what’s happening in Surrey this month. April also sees the launch of a plethora of new businesses; Luvbiltong, SCHR and Ballingdon Hall – see our ‘What’s On’ news page for more details. We are excited to try them out. Til next time,

everyone’s talking about...

WILL SMITH SMACKGATE Will Smith’s attack on presenter Chris Rock has taken headline news at the Oscars this year, with the shock slap for commenting on his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s buzz cut being all anyone can talk about. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood’s most treasured awards ceremony (who won what by the way?!) spiralled downhill when actor Will Smith stormed the stage to retaliate against Rock’s alleged ‘joke’ about his wife Jada’s alopecia. Rock asked if Jada, who has a shaved head, “can’t wait to star in GI Jane 2” - in a joke that majorly backfired. Smith, 53, sitting near the front of the stage, noticeably lost his temper (as he saw Jada grimace and roll her eyes) and went up to presenter Rock and slapped him VERY hard around the face - to the surprise of all the onlooking guests. Rock was heard to have said: “Uh-oh” as Smith approached and after the almighty slap said, “Wow, wow, Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.” As Smith sat down, he said angrily to Rock: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.” Rock insisted he was making a joke, although Smith repeated his sentiments again, raising h i s voice, to which Rock replied, “I’m going to. Okay.” Bradley Cooper was later seen calming Smith down as did Denzil Washington, and the show (as it does in LA) went on. Forty minutes later, Smith went on to win the Best Actor award for his role in ‘King Richard.’ He came

14 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

on stage and accepted the award tearfully responding to his outburst saying: “I want to apologise to the Academy, I want to apologise to my fellow nominees.” There was noticeably, no apology to Chris Rock during the speech. Smith thanked his mother and made a mention to “love makes you do crazy things” but not relating to the ‘incident’ - probably the most shocking event ever to happen in the Academy Awards 94-year history. Smith was later seen enjoying his evening with his family at the Vanity Fair After Party seemingly without a care in world. Although, every single press article on Monday was slamming him. Many saying he should have his Oscar revoked. The Academy has officially responded with a comment that “It does not condone violence,” but no mention of any Oscar revoke for Smith. Chris Rock has been questioned by the LAPD to see if he wants to press charges – which he doesn’t. There has been a long-running feud between the two actor/comedians according to reports. A swipe at Smith’s wifes medical condition may have been a low dig on Oscar’s night but Rock is a comedian and was appointed to generate laughs from the crowd. On the other hand, Smith was defending his wife’s honour and a low joke aimed at alopecia sufferers is not a good thing to do especially given the ‘Woke Generation’ we live in. However, is violence the answer? A well thought out, comedic comeback by ‘Fresh Prince’ actor Smith would have been so much more effective and a lot less damaging to his career. Smith has defended his outburst by saying he is seeking therapy for his troubled childhood. His defence of his wife apparently stems from not standing up to his father as a child. In his memoirs, published last year, Smith states standing by and doing nothing as his alcoholic father beat up his mother and that it has haunted him for most of his life. “When I was nine years old, I watched my father punch my mother in the side of the head so hard that she collapsed. I saw her spit blood. Within everything that I have done since then - the awards and accolades, the spotlights and the attention, the characters and the laughs - there has been a subtle string of apologies to my mother for my inaction that day,” Smith revealed saying he felt like a coward. It remains to be seen what will happen in this ongoing Oscars saga. But for now - with Smith delivering a public apology to Rock at the time of going to press hopefully the 2022 Oscar furore will be old news soon. Smith certainly hopes so.

NEWS CAIN & VORAJEE SPLIT Ashley Cain and Safiyya Vorajee have announced they have broken up, just weeks away from the one-year anniversary of baby Azaylia’s death. The celebrity couple - who tragically lost their 8-monthold daughter to a rare form of Leukemia on April 25th 2021 have not been pictured together since last year, sparking rumours in the media that they had gone their separate ways. In response to the ongoing claims former Coventry City footballer Cain, posted news of their separation on Instagram, saying: “After a devastating and heartbreaking year, Safiyya and I decided to separate a few months ago. This was an incredibly tough decision... the past few months have demonstrated that we remain the closest of friends, spending time together everyday and

that we will love, care and support each other forever. We are bonded by our powerful journey together, by the eternal love we have for our daughter and our passionate commitment to her foundation.” The Azaylia Foundation, set up in honour of Azaylia Diamond Cain, has raised over £2m to support children suffering with rare forms of cancer and pivotally help families in need with fundraising for treatments not readily available on the NHS.

TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR TAYLOR HAWKINS

Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, has tragically died aged 50 following a cardiovascular collapse, reportedly brought on by a lethal cocktail of drugs. Hawkins was found unresponsive in his hotel room in Bogota, Columbia on Friday March 25th after calling on emergency services complaining with chest pains hours earlier. It was later discovered his heart weighed 600 grams – twice the weight for a man his age and size. According to preliminary toxicology reports there were 10 different traces of drugs found in his blood including marijuana, opiods and anti-depressants. Tributes have poured in far and wide for the much-loved

musician including Queen guitarist Brian May, who said, “Heartbroken. Taylor, you were family to us. Our friend, our brother, our beloved child. We will miss you so much.” Miley Cyrus broke down on stage as she told fans, “We lost a legend in rock music...” As she sent love to the band and Hawkin’s wife Alison and his three children, who survive the star. The Foo Fighters have cancelled their upcoming tour and released a statement saying, “We are devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins. His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live with us forever.”

KIM K PHOTOSHOP BACKLASH

Regularly in the firing line for heavily editing her pictures, Kim Kardashian, is receiving more public berating after her recent Oscars pictures show her with a mottled skin appearance whilst her own social media snaps (the same evening) show her skin to be utterly flawless. Angry fans have criticised the reality star for setting “unrealistic standards of beauty” and called on the SKIMS billionaire to “keep it real”. Kim attended the Vanity Fair post-Oscars bash with sister Kendall in a blue Balenciaga dress and did a slideshow on her Instagram – not a hair out of place and skin glowing - looking nearer 21 than her real age of 41. Fans were saying that the paparazzi photos - which show a slightly uneven skin tone were not bad at all – just “real” and she should be proud to post them as opposed to the heavily edited, unrealistic snaps she actually posts. Here’s hoping Kim wakes up to the image dysmorphia she is inflicting on young women everywhere and goes natural with her future snaps.

TESLA’S PI TO SHAKE UP MOBILE MARKET Tesla is reportedly working on a futuristic smartphone, codenamed Pi, which will be powered by solar energy with no need for chargers. The news of the new device has not been confirmed by the world’s largest electric car maker yet - although insiders believe it could launch late next year or early 2024. The Tesla Smartphone is also expected to come with an inbuilt functionality to gain access to Starlink, allowing users to surf the web without relying on Earthbound telecoms. Already established by Elon Musk’s Space X company, Starlink provides high-speed, low latency broadband internet using satellites in low orbit. This makes for reliable connectivity in every area of the world with no buffering on video calls and online gaming. Experts say the new Tesla phone will be better integrated

with Tesla cars giving them more control via the device. It is mooted that regular vehicle functions including locking/unlocking, controlling temperature and media will occur through the phone. Don’t expect a big announcement anytime soon though. Musk did away with his public relations department in 2020 – relying solely on social media, namely Twitter, to make his announcements. Billionaire Musk has 78.2 million followers while Tesla has 13.6 million followers. One further feature (straight out of a sci-fi movie) is Musk’s Neuralink being tied to the Tesla Phone. As scary as it sounds chips are being implanted in human brains in trials to provoke thought over action as a way of communicating directly from the brain. Although this seems like Pi in the sky (!) this is apparently a feasible possibility for future tech comms.

RECIPE CRUNCHY BULGHAR SALAD A vibrant summer salad with radishes, edamame beans, peppers, almonds and herbs, drizzled with a citrus dressing. Healthy, light and fresh with only 483 calories a serving. INGREDIENTS: (Serves 4) • 200g bulghar wheat • 150g frozen podded edamame beans • 2 romano peppers, sliced into rounds, seeds removed • 150g radishes, finely sliced • 75g whole blanched almonds • Small bunch mint, finely chopped • Small bunch parsley, finely chopped • 2 oranges • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil METHOD: 1. Cook the bulghar following pack instructions, then drain and tip into a large serving bowl to cool. 2. Put the edamame beans in a small bowl, pour over boiling water, leave for 1 min, then drain. 3. Put in a serving bowl with the peppers, radishes, almonds, mint and parsley.

4. Peel one orange, carefully cut away the segments and add to the bowl. 5. Squeeze the juice of the other orange into a jam jar with the oil. Season well and shake to emulsify. 6. Pour over the salad, toss well and serve.

WINE MATCH The best wines to pair with bulghar wheat are whites that bring out the nutty side to the grain. A ripe, oaky Australian Chardonnay blends perfectly with the sweet, tangy and assertive flavours of this particular dish. As the salad contains edamame beans and radishes a Sauvignon Blanc or lesser known Pinot Gris - which are becoming increasingly popular would also work particularly well. Stay clear of reds and if you are a fan of rose, go for a light, dry rose like Pinot Noir.

JACK WHITE: FEAR OF THE DAWN

THE SECRET SEA CREATURES

After a 4-year break, former White Stripes frontman Jack White is back with an almighty bang, producing not one but two albums this year. The first, ‘Fear of the Dawn’ features the soon-to-be, hit single ‘Taking Me Back’ which debuted in conjunction with a promotional campaign for video game ‘Call of Duty’. It also features a catchy track called ‘Hi-De-Ho’ following a collaboration with New York rapper/producer Q-Tip. The title track ‘Fear of the Dawn’ is going to be the big belter though; seeing Jack return to his hard rock heritage with top notch singing and equal amounts of guitar shredding. It is accompanied by a gritty video, directed by Jack, that is shot in an edgy black, white and blue colour palette. ‘Fear of the Dawn’ is scheduled for release on April 8th – the day Jack White starts his US tour. His second summer album, ‘Entering Heaven Alive’ is set to be released on July 22nd. Little is known about this release yet other than it will feature an acoustic version of the first single ‘Taking Me Back (Gently)’ and ‘Love Is Selfish’ – a track Jack released earlier this year. This is a great album as it features such a diverse and eclectic mix of music including hip hop and ballads, while still staying true to Jack White’s main genre of rock.

The latest book from author Tina Talbot’s ‘Survival Super Squad’ series of books, is the delightful story of Taye, the Turtle, who finds himself lost in polluted waters and how he helps the sea animals he meets on his journey. It ends on a positive note and gives us hope that our children will help to protect our planet in the future. The Survival Super Squad series of books are fun, character based, educational, transitional reads that aim to encourage children to fall in love with nature and look after their environment. There are five picture books in the series so far, primarily aimed at 5 to 9-year-olds, with beautiful supporting illustrations by Judit Matthews and Karina Siba. The other books tell the stories of ‘The Daring Droplets’ and ‘The Wilful Wildflowers’ teaching children about the water cycle and the importance of our wildflowers respectively. There are new characters in The Survival Super Squad to come. Inspired by the Romantic movement in English literature and its affinity with the natural world, Surrey-based author Tina, came up with the idea to engage children in nature. There are new characters in The Survival Super Squad to come. Fun and educational they are great reads for any child.

Sony Pictures have really gone to town on the fear factor with this blood curdling, soonto-be franchise featuring the Marvel Comics famous anti-hero Morbius. The story centres around biochemist Michael Morbius (played by ‘Suicide Squad’ actor Jared Leto) who tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease. When the experiment goes wrong he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism. Further trouble ensues when circumstances lead to Martine, his fiancée, being transformed into a vampire too at his hand. The blockbuster film also stars ‘Good Omens’ Adria Arjona as his fiancée Martine, former ‘Doctor Who’ actor Matt Smith as his buddy Loxias Crown and ‘Fast and Furious’ star Tyrese Gibson as FBI agent Simon Stroud. There is also a standout performance from Oscar winner Michael Keaton as Vulture, who was last seen in ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ getting fans excited for the prospect of future Spidey crossovers. Filmed in a dark and melancholy style, Morbius is scripted by ‘Dracula Untold’s’ Burk Sharpless ‘The Last Witch Hunter’s’ Matt Sazama. Swedish director Daniel Espinosa takes up the help to direct this fantasy superhero flick, scheduled for release on April 1.

urrey-based flower subscription company, The Flower Blooms, is our favourite, zero-waste, eco-conscious flower club. Set up by two best friends Katie and Claire – who came up with the fabulous idea of creating fresh flowers personally hand-delivered to your door in beautiful bundles. Choose from weekly, fortnightly or monthly flower subscriptions. Plus, unlike other flower subscription services, The Flower Blooms are such good value for money – they start at just £26.50 per bundle with free delivery included.

LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING, HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Katie: We met way back in 2005- I was fresh out of university having just started up a wedding planning company. I needed a florist and so fate- and the Yellow Pages sent me Claire! Claire: We worked on numerous weddings and events together over the next few years and then remained friends ever since.

HOW DID THE IDEA OF LAUNCHING THE FLOWER BLOOMS COME ABOUT?

Katie: On a bench, in the pouring rain at our local garden centre! We’d met there with our little ones about a month before

26 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

the first lockdown, and Claire mentioned that she’d had a new business idea that she wanted to run by me. Claire: Having worked in the floristry industry for over twentyfive years, the business idea felt like the perfect next step in my career. I’d watched the popularity of flower subscriptions grow- but I wanted to create something different and better. Katie was doing some great work in digital content and social media management, so I just knew we’d be the

perfect team to build this business. We spent most of the pandemic building the foundations of the business and then the day our website went live, we messaged everyone we knew and every celebrity in the Surrey- South London area. We had the biggest shock when Amanda Holden signed up and became our first customer!

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM YOUR COMPETITORS?

Katie: We aim to be the ‘Ultimate

Flower Club’ and there are so many perks to being a member. We offer a range of different type of flowers - flowers you won’t find in the supermarkets or would be super expensive directly from a florist. Claire: We focus on Value, Experience and Quality for all aspects of our business. Our members receive great value for money. Our Bundles contains anywhere between 20-40 stems - which is more often than not, double the amount of stems that you’ll receive with any of our competitors. We hand-deliver all of our bundles, so our members know that their flowers are handled with care from the moment they leave our workshop to when they arrive on their doorstep. As a zerowaste business, we never let any flowers go to waste so if there are ever any left over, we give these to our customers as Bonus Blooms alongside their bundle.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR FLOWERS AND WHY?

Katie: We source our flowers from a mixture of both British and Dutch suppliers depending on the seasons and availability. Claire: We want to give our customers a range of flowerssomething that isn’t possible all year round with British suppliers. But we offset any emissions we use with the regular planting of trees via Ecologi and all of the vehicles we use are ULES Compliant.

NEWS

WHAT TYPES OF FLOWERS CAN MEMBERS EXPECT TO RECEIVE IN THEIR BUNDLES? Katie: Claire gets so excited about the different types of flowers she orders for our members. Claire: I love choosing the flowers each week. We use everything from Parrot and Double Tulips, to Cherry Blossom, Anemones, Hyacinths, a whole range of Roses and of course Peonies. Peonies are our absolute favourite!

HOW MANY VASES WOULD A TYPICAL BUNDLE FILL?

Katie: We always aim for one bundle to fill at least two vases to place around the home or workspace. Claire: The beauty of the Flower Club, is that our flowers can be displayed as one really large vase arrangement - or two-three, sometimes even four small vases. We give you a few options each week to guide you through the arranging process and to help our members really get the most out of every bundle.

WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY DELIVER TO?

Katie: At present we cover the whole of Surrey, South West London, Twickenham and Teddington. Claire: We really hope to expand our delivery areas one day. Whether we do this by franchising

28 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

or outsourcing deliveries, we’re not sure at this stage. We just really want to become a well known brand in Surrey and South West London- that would make us really happy.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST THIS YEAR WITH THE FLOWER BLOOMS?

Katie: We are exhibiting at the Hampton Court Flower Festival again this year and we can’t blooming wait! It was so much fun - hard work but a brilliant experience. Claire: We are looking forward to spreading the word about our flower club and building our memberships - we know what we are offering is something special and if you love flowers, you’re just going to love our flower club.

Ronan Keating RONAN CHATS EXCLUSIVELY WITH ANGELA SARA WEST FROM SURREY ROCKS about his glittering career, working with Ed Sheeran, helping men’s mental health, his commitment to charity, golfing and horse racing in Surrey, all this while performing alongside Bryan Adams and James Blunt at Cornbury Festival this July. He’s defined over two decades of pop music, performed for Prince Charles, sung for the Pope, grilled Stormzy and collaborated with Kylie, among other accolades aplenty... “I’ve been lucky,” multi-platinum-selling musician Ronan Keating tells me on his way home from his early morning Magic radio show. “I’ve sung with some amazing people, from Elton John, LeAnn Rimes and Pavarotti, to Cat Stevens, Lulu and Burt Bacharach… The collaborations I’ve had over the years have been amazing!” the broadcaster and former Boyzone bandmember explains.

INSPIRED BY THE GREATS The first single Ronan bought was Last Christmas by Wham! “I LOVE that song! I love Wham! I love George Michael, and the reason I’m a singer today is because of George… he’s been my greatest influence.” The superstar singer’s also inspired by another bestselling group. “The Bee Gees. For me, Barry Gibb is the greatest songwriter of all time…” The singer-songwriter shot to stardom at sweet 16, belting out hit-after-hit as the youngest member of Boyzone, one of the most successful boybands in history, who hit the UK No.1 spot an impressive six times, sold a staggering 25 million records and toured the world. Having gained global recognition when his chart-topping single When You Say Nothing at All featured in the hit film Notting Hill, since going solo, the Irish singing sensation has gone from strength-tostrength, crafting an epic solo vocation, selling over 22 million records worldwide. The highlight of his celebrated career? “My longevity. To still be here nearly 30 years later is a great honour,” he reveals. “I think that’s the greatest goal, to have longevity in this business, and still be getting away with it… So, I’m happy about that!”

A MAN OF MANY HITS… AND HATS And it’s not just his singing career that’s brought the Dublin-born star success… Ronan’s diversified, dabbling in acting and other areas, too. “I think you have to,” he says. “It’s important for your profile to stay out there. You have to do lots of things now - go on cookery shows and all sorts - to let people know that your album is out!” Having carved a career spanning almost three decades, this multi-talented musician has also made his mark as a mentor, actor and high-profile presenter. Alongside spells as a judge down under on The X Factor and The Voice Australia alongside Natalie Imbruglia, the award-winning star’s stints have seen highly-acclaimed stage performances in London’s West End hit musical Once since going it alone, too. “It’s been 22 brilliant, mad years,” Ronan tells me. “I feel really blessed to still be here and still doing it.”

A BESTSELLING, RECORD-BREAKING ARTIST The secret to his success in such a tough industry? “I’m not afraid to work,” he explains. “In this game, you have to graft constantly, so I’ve worked tirelessly… all the time. And I enjoy it. I’m not complaining… I love what I do!” Ronan’s many talents have expanded exponentially across abundant platforms. “There are lots of more talented people out there than me,” he modestly admits. “But I think there are a lot of different elements that allow somebody to get to where I’ve got to after 20 years.”

54 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

Bringing breakfast show entertainment to the nation with his weekday morning radio show on much-loved Magic FM with co-host Harriet Scott, how did it feel to achieve the highest-ever ratings in Magic’s history? “Amazing!! It’s such a fun show… We love what we do and speaking with our listeners and hearing what people think. I never imagined I’d do radio like this, especially breakfast radio… I lived the other lifestyle - going to bed at 4-5am, not getting up at that time! I love it, it’s great fun.” A few of his fave guests? “We had Stormzy on, which was quite unique for Magic. Mark Wahlberg was pretty cool, Kylie Minogue’s wonderful… we get a real mixed bag, it’s great!” Ronan’s now working his magic at weekends, too, having hooked up with Disney+ for a Saturday afternoon show on the station, filling us in on his family’s favourite Disney films.

A LOOSE MAN ON THE ONE SHOW SOFA Alongside making his mark on the airwaves, he’s had impressive hosting success on TV, too, where his much-loved co-hosting stints on BBC One’s ‘The One Show’ sofa see him chatting with countless other celebs. Ronan’s also been a ‘Loose Man’ for the day, alongside Marvin Humes, Iain Stirling and Roman Kemp, as popular ITV lunchtime show ‘Loose Women’ rebranded for one day and one day only for the first time in its 21-year history. Welcoming its first all-male panel to mark International Men’s Day 2020, the ‘Loose Men’ changed the conversation, inspiring fellow males to talk about their feelings and not keep things bottled up. Alongside sharing their own personal experiences, the Loose Men were joined by Hollywood legend Matthew McConaughey as part of the programme’s ‘Stand by Your Men’ award-winning mental health campaign ‘Lighten The Load’.

HELPING MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH With a focus on male mental health, the campaign shines a light on the importance of men asking for help if they are struggling, to tackle the issues they often shy away from talking about. “It was great to go on the show with the other lads and start the conversation to, hopefully, get men talking about mental health issues,” says Ronan. “I see Dan, my therapist, whenever I’m feeling fragile and need help with my mental health, whether I’m overstressed from working too hard, or it’s a certain date which reminds me of something sad that’s happened, such as someone who’s passed away...” “Men find it hard to talk, and suffer with depression

greatly... It’s good to talk, and there is help out there to give men the tools they need to deal with things they are struggling with.” Ronan is an ambassador for a fair few charities. “I feel very passionate about working with the Strong Men charity, which assists men dealing with bereavement and deals with mental health,” he says.

CELEBRITY JUICING Ronan’s also let his hair down on Keith Lemon’s Celebrity Juice. “It’s SO much fun to be on. At a time like this, where everything is so sanitised, literally, we need a show like that…” I suggest he puts himself forward for James Cordon’s Car Karaoke. “That would be GREAT fun… a riot! James and I sang together a few years ago at one of my charity events. He’s a great singer.”

A ROLLERCOASTER TWENTY TWENTY Ronan’s album Twenty Twenty, released in the rollercoaster year of 2020, features a magnificent mix of old and new tracks, commemorating 20 years since his first phenomenally-successful eponymous debut solo album Ronan. He describes Twenty Twenty as “a greatest hits of brand-new music”. “There are three songs I readdressed; When You Say Nothing At All, Life Is a Rollercoaster and Lovin’ Each Day. Those songs are kind of career records that stand the test of time and are still with me today. And I’m here today because of those songs. So, I just thought I’d kind of give them a new, 2020 flavour.”

IN TUNE WITH OTHER TALENTS Reworking a few old favourites, Ronan called in a few famous friends to add their creative juices. “Robbie Williams, Shania Twain, Emeli Sandé, Nina Nesbitt... some of my favourite artists are on there… I got to sing with them and I’m very proud of that. Having Alison Krauss sing on When You Say Nothing At All, and Ed Sheeran play guitar over it, it’s just phenomenal… a great honour.”

RONAN & ROBBIE’S BIG GOODBYE FOR STEPHEN Ronan and Robbie, of course, go back a long

way, and duetted on a touching Twenty Twenty tribute track to Ronan’s late Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately. “It was lovely to work with Rob. I love his work, he works very hard, he’s a great artist and great fun,” says Ronan. “Rob reached out to me on the 10-year anniversary of Stephen Gately’s death to say he’d forgotten he’d written this song, The Big Goodbye, about Stephen’s passing. It was a very moving, emotional rollercoaster, the whole thing, to be honest, but a great honour to have this on the album and to sing it with Robbie.”

RONAN ON THE ROAD Ronan was supposed to celebrating his milestone work anniversary with a ‘Twenty Twenty’ world tour. “It should have kicked off in June 2020, but it was postponed. A big part of the celebration is to tour it live. We all need to get back out there and tour live, for our heads and our hearts, we just wanna get back on the road again. That’s why I do what I do – perform.” Just last week, Ronan at last took to the stage again, at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. How does it feel to be finally doing what he loves again? “It’s just great to be back on stage with my band again. After the last couple of years, I think everyone feels a huge sigh of relief that we can all get back together again to do something we truly love.” His rescheduled ‘Twenty Twenty’ tour kicks off in a couple of months, and he’ll be back here in Surrey in September, where he’ll perform at Lingfield Park Resort. “That will be a new one for me!” he reveals. “I’ve got theatre dates all across the UK during June and July, and then some outdoor shows through the rest of the summer. The race day shows are always great fun, especially if you can pick a couple of winners!”

FESTIVAL TIME The summer festivals are finally back in full force too. “I’m heading to Oxfordshire for Cornbury Festival this summer… finally!” he tells me of the fantastic music fest taking place between 8th–10th July at The Great Tew Park. “I was due to perform there in 2020 but, understandably, everything had to be moved. It’s a great line-up, with Bryan Adams, James Blunt and then me on the Sunday.”

BUCKET LIST COLLABS Having collaborated with some greats in the past, Pavarotti and Elton John also among them, whom would Ronan most love to duet with? “Garth Brooks is someone I’d love to work with, and it would be awesome to work with Bono and U2...” he tells me.

SONGS FROM HOME He honours Ireland’s musical history with his latest album Songs From Home, for which he hand-picked 12 tracks from his beloved homeland, drawing from the wealth of Ireland’s talent. “I was lucky to be able to release two albums during the pandemic; Twenty Twenty and Songs From Home,” he explains. Toasting his love for Irish music, as well as its continued significance in his life, the latter intimate album boasts brilliant reworks, as well as an original single from the celebrated Irish star. Ronan has circled back to his roots with the album which authentically captures and represents his life in music. Celebrating traditional poetry and folklore alongside contemporary pieces, Songs From Home forms the ultimate soundtrack to Ronan’s personal story. The international Irish artist masterfully weaves unheard tales of his youth with Ireland’s considerable musical heritage.

A LOCKDOWN BABY Having recently moved from Barnes in SW London, ‘home’ nowadays for Ronan is in the rolling hills of the idyllic English countryside, where he and his model/TV producer wife Storm have built their dream sustainable home just outside the capital city. Now a doting dad to five children (Ronan has three children with first wife, Yvonne), his and Storm’s second child, baby Coco, came along just four days into the first lockdown. “It was nice to be able to concentrate on being there at home. I’ve never spent that much time in one place in my life; I left home at 16, so to be there for every nappy change, bathtime, bedtime, every waking morning… it was gorgeous, really lovely… very special.” How did he look after his mental health during the first drawn-out lockdown? “Being around the ones you love makes life okay, much easier… My wife and children communicating and going through our daily lives together… we came through it.” Did the family man find himself being particularly creative? “I did write a lot, but to be honest, I was so busy I didn’t stop… doing my radio show from home, promoting my new album through Zoom interviews and Instagram… I think that was good for the head, too.” And music, of course, can help massively with mental health. “Very much...” agrees the aimable musician. “It’s an outlet… a great way of dealing with your emotions, speaking out about how you’re feeling… really important for mental health.”

TOP OF THE SHOPS Right on key, Ronan’s a fan of playing a part in local life, “Storm and I believe in supporting the community. I think it’s important to know the people you’re living around, and to be proud of, and feel part of, the community… It’s especially important at times like this to keep in contact with people nextdoor, people close to you, and make sure

everyone’s doing okay.” He hits all the right notes on the high street, too. “Wherever we live, we ALWAYS shop locally… local grocery stores, butcher’s…”

TEEING OFF IN SURREY… Before Barnes, Ronan resided in Esher, where life in Surrey proved another huge hit for the singer. “It’s fabulous… a beautiful leafy suburb, gorgeous countryside, great restaurants, golf courses, lovely people… a great place to live!” With more courses than you can swing a club at, Surrey serves as a golfer’s paradise for fans of the sport, including singing sensation Ronan. “I LOVE playing golf, and I LOVE Wentworth, which is one of my favourite courses. There are so many fantastic courses in the county…. Sunningdale, private golf courses… it’s a pleasure to play them. They’re some of the best in the UK, if not Europe.” The former Boyzone singer enjoys a good green round with ex-bandmate Keith Duffy, and reveals taking clubs on the road is par for the course. “Keith and I get out there every now and then, and ALWAYS bring our golf bags on tour!” He also has a golf buddy in Brian McFadden, formerly of Westlife fame - the band Ronan co-managed – and who has now formed a supergroup with Keith. Ronan and Brian have also played with a golfing legend. “We played with Gary Player at Wentworth for charity.” So, what does Ronan miss most about his boyband days? “The lads… the camaraderie on the road, the friendship, you know... I do miss the boys...”

TOP OF RONAN’S CHARTS Before buying an abode in Barnes, the broadcaster had already found the area a source of inspiration for his music. “There was a studio in Barnes called The Olympic (now the cinema), and I wrote and recorded a lot of albums

there. So, I spent a lot of time around Barnes even before I lived there, working and recording and writing, and we just loved the area, the community, and even though you’re so close to town (London), you’ve got that village feel.”

His preferred restaurant also has a top riverside spot there. “Riva’s our favourite, and we’ll be back there soon for lunch or dinner, we love it so much!” Richmond also rocks for Ronan. “Pre-kids, we went running in Richmond Park a lot. Now, we regularly take the kids for walks along the river, which is a lovely thing to do. It’s a great lifestyle, a great way of life there…”

RICHMOND ROCKS & PUTNEY’S CAFFEINE FIX! HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS… With a penchant for Putney, too, Ronan and Storm are partners in popular coffee pitstop, Ground Coffee Society. “We’re involved in the GCS coffee shop at 79 Lower Richmond Road, so we head there every now and again,” Ronan reveals. “I like that village feel, and being on the river is gorgeous, especially in the summertime, and the pubs are right on the river… It’s really lovely… we love that lifestyle.”

He may be partial to Putney and Richmond, but Barnes is still Ronan’s No.1. “Storm and I love Barnes. It’s a gorgeous neighbourhood, with great restaurants, cinema, pubs… The Red Lion, The Brown Dog… so many.” With famous faces a-go-go in the area, “I bump into

Simon Le Bon, renowned chefs and rugby players there,” he says. “We love Barnes, we really do!”

A PASSIONATE PHILANTHROPIC PERFORMER From climbing Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief, to swimming the Irish Sea, this big-hearted singer’s achieved amazing things in the name of charity. And there’s one particular cause that’s very close to this philanthropic performer’s heart… “I set up the Marie Keating Foundation with my family 23 years ago, after our mum passed away from cancer,” he explains. “We’ve worked on that tirelessly... It’s been a tough couple of years for charities to fundraise, because of COVID.” Ronan launched the first mobile unit in the UK to target the general public with cancer prevention information, highlighting how to reduce your cancer risk. He also supports the Cancer Awareness Roadshows, which tour around the UK. As the Foundation’s Patron, the prolific philanthropist’s proud to have pulled off the TV benefit gig ‘Concert4Cancer’ a couple of summers ago, featuring Gary Barlow, Brian Kennedy, The Coronas and Kodaline. “We raised half a million… it was phenomenal!”

be able to see me each week on the sofa co-hosting the BBC’s ‘One Show’,” he reveals. “I feel very lucky to be in people’s homes across the UK each day on TV and radio, but finally being back on stage is the thing that’s making this year so special!” Following such challenging times for us all, Ronan has a very special message for readers of Surrey Rocks… “Treasure your loved ones, treasure your kids, go that extra mile and reach out to those people who really need it. It’s been a grim couple of years and we need to just spread the love as best we can. Health and happiness for everybody!”

AND CANCER RESEARCH Donning their glad rags, Ronan and Storm hold an annual star-studded Emeralds & Ivy Ball in aid of the Marie Keating Foundation and in partnership with Cancer Research UK. “We’ve hosted it for nearly 15 years now and have raised around £12m, which goes to our mobile units travelling around the country, giving a free service to people. They’re back out on the road, which is fantastic because we feel there’s going to be a huge spike now in cancer patients, as people haven’t been able to go to hospitals and be checked and diagnosed. So, it’s really important and we can deal with this… and we’re out there trying to help people.”

his 90s inspired look has been around for a while but isn’t going anywhere. It is supremely versatile and can be anything from a few face framing highlights to a chunky placement around the whole hairline. The Money Piece can bring back life to a grown out colour, offer a pop of brightness or highlight a more natural look. The options are limitless, it could be white, pink or if you’re feeling brave black over a white base. As the hairline is the most fragile part of your hair due to it being finer and getting more heat and styling, it is really important to only let a professional do this.

70’S REVIVAL 70’s have also made a comeback with warm sepia tones in fashion as much as hair. This season blondes are looking warmer and richer, anything from beige blondes to rich, buttery tones. The look can be pretty versatile and we can tailor it to suit all skin tones. On olive tones I suggest a richer biscuit blonde whilst warmer yellow tones will look great with a golden blonde. This can vary from a full head of highlights, balayage or a global all-over tinted blonde with added pieces, especially around the front and length to give it extra dimension.

It could be London, Paris or Milan Fashion Week, but being in the salon is our favourite location. It’s where we can connect with clients and share the trend knowledge we’ve seen first-hand at fashion week. Forecasting future trends and working out the expert technique to re-create these trends for our clients is what we love to do. We create hair that works with the bone structure of the face, and we spend time getting to really know each client in order to create a hairstyle that truly complements you and your personal style. To take a catwalk style and adapt it to suit anyone keeps us and our clients are the forefront of fashion. We are committed to progress, through the continuous education and development of our team, so we always bring cutting-edge and contemporary, yet wearable hair designs to every one of our clients. I’ll be back next month with more insights from the world of hair but if you can’t wait until then, please visit our Esher salon at 7 High Street, KT10 9RL where myself and the team are always happy to talk about our favourite subject. BOTTLENECK BANGS These are a hybrid between a grown out fringe and a full fringe, and the perfect option for anyone looking to try one out. Unlike a graphic fringe, the bottleneck cut gets longer at the edges and blends seamlessly with the rest of the hair. This means that the style is universal and can be tailored to suit all face shapes, which is what we’re about at HARE & BONE. Kaia Gerber, Jennifer Lopez and Dakota Johnson have all showcased this look perfectly.

TEXTURED BOBS The ‘wolf’ and the ‘shag’ have been taken shorter to create a textured bob this spring/summer. Laura Harrier, Jodie Comer, Annabelle Dexter-Jones have given a great lesson on how going shorter can define your features. This season the bob is blunt cut but finished with textured waves that break up the clean lines that we have seen in previous years. I would suggest using a narrow set of BaByliss tongs to create the waves,

HOME & INTERIORS

DESIGNING A M I

Sadie Pizzey Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. SP Interiors works on both residential and commercial projects and has recently been shortlisted for The International Design and Architecture Awards. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”. www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com

n this months design article, we are sharing our design knowledge and guidance for designing a multifunctional space. Large multifunctional spaces in our homes are so important, they allow us to be together, to have flexibility in how we live and to help our lives function and flow. This is really how many of us want to live. We no longer want to feel segregated into smaller rooms whilst we cook, eat and relax. The cook feels cut off from the rest of the family, dining becomes an activity of ferrying food between the two rooms. The flow of communication and coming together is fragmented as everyone is divided into separate spaces.

THE EVERYTHING ROOM Open plan kitchen, diners are nothing new. It is the way that the majority of us live or aspire to live. What we are seeing more and more of, is the aspiration for the open plan kitchen diner to transform even

HOME & INTERIORS

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE more and become the ‘Everything room’. A space to cook, eat, chat, relax, feel cosy and connect to nature. This is definitely the aspiration of a lot of our clients. With busy lives putting more and more pressure on our time. When we are home together, we want to enjoy that time together, to reconnect and recharge as a family.

HOW DO YOU DIVIDE UP A MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACE? How do you create this everything room? The design, layout, lighting and material palette is absolutely crucial to the success of this space. Firstly, the layout; zoning the room allows you to clearly define the purpose of each section of the space. For many open plan spaces there are essentially three zones for the room: cooking, dining and relaxing.

THE DIFFERENT ZONES

Open plan spaces are obviously larger rooms, so that presents a challenge if you want to create a cosy seating area. For one of our recent projects the family wanted to add glass to the rear of the extension to enjoy a connection to nature. However, they also wanted to add a fire into the space to feel cosy and relaxed. The solution was to divide up the window wall into two large sections of Crittall doors and add a ceiling hung, feature fire. By creating this strong feature, it also clearly defined the cosy area of the space. Big expanses of glass in spaces is fantastic, but they do restrict how we zone a room. By splitting the glass sections, it gave us some wall space back to add this integral element of the design. We then also positioned the corner sofa to enjoy the garden views and added a

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

89

HOME & INTERIORS

beautiful bespoke bookcase. This not only provided some muchneeded storage, but also created a backdrop to highlight some of the families treasures. Where possible we always design seating areas to be as close to the external views. We are big believers in the power of Biophilic design (bringing the outside in). With so many proven, health benefits it is very important that our clients enjoy that connection to nature as much as possible. For this project, the dining space sat next to the cosy, living zone. This meant that there wasn’t ample space for this zone. The solution was to design bench seating as a continuation of the kitchen units. It maximised the space and maintained a sense of flow and consistency. This is so important when designing the layout of your room, to achieve this multifunctional way of living you need to be clever with space and decide what are the principle features of the room. If a large corner sofa is top priority, then adding banquette seating in the dining space frees up room for you to achieve this. The kitchen zone is also the area when you need as much

circulation space as possible. There are doors and drawers opening, ovens being used, different family members coming in and out of the space. It is very important it doesn’t feel cramped. We often see the mistake of kitchen islands being too big or too close to the other units. Although it’s tempting to have the most kitchen units you can fit in, actually space and clever storage is far more important.

THE PALETTE OF MATERIALS Although it is vital to zone an open plan space, there needs to be consistency so that the room doesn’t jar aesthetically. This is why it is very important that your palette of materials is complimentary as you move round the space and there are consistent uses of those materials. Modern extensions can be challenging spaces to add character. We will always look to bring in incredible materials to bring interest and character to a space, whether that’s a wall of

HOME & INTERIORS

rustic timber, textured brick slips or an usual panelled design. This is why many of our clients choose to work with us, our skill is our ability to take what could be a bland, modern box and turn into something exciting and special. Also knowing how the space will be used and by who impacts your material choices. For example, marble in kitchens is beautiful, but if the kitchen is going to be put through its paces with teenagers and toddlers, then a hardy quartz is the better option. That doesn’t mean that kitchens for family life have to be led purely by practicality. Another example is we have used hardy quartz for worktops but then teamed it with an incredible patinated copper splash back, it is an amazing design impact but it isn’t a surface that needs the same upkeep.

ZONED LIGHTING One of the easiest ways to zone an open plan space is with the lighting. Lighting design is one of the most important elements of a space and it is so often over-looked. General lighting and task lighting is obviously very important for the kitchen. You need to be able to see clearly when you are cooking. Darker areas, such as under wall cabinets and shelves can be highlighted with under cabinet lighting. Downlighters are a common addition for the open plan space and they are incredibly useful. However, when they are used on their own, they produce

a very flat, uninspiring light, which does nothing to bring warmth and dimension to the space. When we design downlighters into a space, we are careful with their usage. We always stipulate them to be dimmable and they are always just a base layer to the rest of the lighting. Pendants are a brilliant way of bringing ambient lighting into the space. They can be hung over kitchen islands and tables. They not only zone the sections, but they are a softer, warmer light to enjoy chatting to family and friends. Other ways to layer and zone the lighting is to use wall lights, shadow gap lighting or floor or table lamps. The lighting scheme is such an important part of the success of any space. When we work on a project - we always spend time creating lighting and electrical plans to enhance our design. The open plan kitchen, dining, living space is one of the most important rooms in your home. It is probably the space we design the most, as clients value the importance of getting this room right.

If you would like to chat to us about your project then don’t hesitate to contact us at www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com or email us at info@sadiepizzeyinteriors.com. SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

RESTAURANT REVIEW

THE VICTORIA T

he Victoria in Oxshott has been lovingly renovated and given a celebrity chef makeover, courtesy of two leading lights from the UK hospitality industry; Simon King and Matt Larcombe. The dynamic duo, who met whilst working for Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck Group several years ago, both share a passion for Great British produce and offering the best service. The Victoria is their first venture together, having opened in August 2021, under their flagship brand: Igniting Hospitality. Since its inauguration; they have been welcoming in locals and those from further afield with fantastic feedback. The Guardian’s food critic Grace Dent said of her recent dining experience; “The finest Beef Wellington I will ever have in my lifetime,” while only last month The Victoria made The Times shortlist for the ‘30 Best Sunday Roasts’ in Great Britain. Given their experience, from Gordon Ramsey to The Ritz, this is hardly surprising to achieve such rave reviews. Matt and Simon told us they wanted to create a pub the locals can be proud of, and boy, have they done us proud! Putting Oxshott and Surrey on the map in terms of the best food in Great Britain is a true accolade.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

The Victoria dates back to the 1800’s and over the years has taken many guises. From a Thai restaurant, to a Brasserie, but always at its heart has been ‘the great village pub’.

102 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

Since being open for just shy of 7 months, the owners admit they love hearing tales from regulars of years gone by and their fond memories of ‘The Vic’ noting “a pub is truly the heart of a community” and whilst The Victoria offers fantastic food, they have managed to keep that traditional, quintessential pub atmosphere too. Major sporting matches are shown here too. “The theme was always Great British pub,” Simon divulges,”the feeling that you are welcome to pop in whatever time of the day or evening and enjoy a pint or ale on tap is paramount to our vision.” Whether it’s the cocktail menu that takes your fancy, a good wine, hearty pub grub, delectable dining or something more traditional, it is clear no detail has been missed here.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

OUR EXPERIENCE

We were booked in for a Wednesday night at 7.30pm, which also happened to be when The Victoria’s regular ‘Live Music’ night is on. To be serenaded on arrival with a talented singer by a roaring pub fire and room full of happy guests laughing and enjoying their evening – was simply magical. We instantly felt relaxed and at ease after a stressful day. Simon was there to meet and greet his guests on our evening (as he so often is) and what warmer welcome could you want. We were seated by the log fire and a stones-throw from a well-known former British tennis player. Star-spotting is not uncommon here by the way! The menu we were presented with was a one page, no frills, simplistic yet enticing selection of the Best of British.

SENSATIONAL STARTERS

Among the tantalising selection of Starters was The Victoria’s signature Beer Battered Oysters with Seaweed Mayonnaise and renowned Salmon Ceviche with Sorrel and Caper Berries. (Devils on Horseback in the Snack Section is a must try too... we know from previous outings.) After much deliberation, we opted for the Mushroom Parfait with Sweet & Sour Onions on Brioche. The parfait was delicious; lightly whipped to perfection and garnished with thinly sliced mushrooms - displayed in such an architectural way it resembled a flowering white blossom. Our team member remarked, “It looks more like a work of art than a Fungus.” Every morsel was finished and any remaining shred of the delicious pink parfait was mopped up by the accompanying toasted brioche. It took 24 hours to make (as does any good, culinary masterminded parfait) and yet was devoured in 2.4 minutes! In our defence it tasted so good, we really couldn’t help it. We also chose the Cauliflower Soup with Cheese Crumble and Chives as our second starter. A flavoursome, healthy, Vegan option – the soup was of perfect creamy consistency and the cheese flakes complimented the dish perfectly, adding that much needed crunch and twist of flavour. We joked (as we seem to do a lot these days, apologies there) that Cauliflower Soup doesn’t normally pack a punch - but this would definitely be billed as the Muhammad Ali of Soups on Fight Night in Vegas.

MASTERFUL MAINS

Having already paid homage to our Vegan friends in the starting act, we knew that Meat and Fish dishes were the ones to sample for Main Course.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

The Victoria is well known for its ‘catch’ and has even dedicated Thursday nights presenting this to its customers in the form of “Day Boat Thursdays” - the Best of British Seafood where King Prawns, Seabass and Dover Sole are regularly on offer. Despite being enticed by the Pan-Fried Halibut and St Austell Mussels, on our tasting evening we opted for their classic Fish & Chips with Crushed Peas and Tartar Sauce, a firm favourite on the menu. It did not disappoint. The batter was so light and fluffy and the fish was perfectly cooked and flaked away as it should do in meaty chunks. The crushed peas were tasty too and chips were plentiful and crispy. However, the most amazing standout dish of the night was definitely the HG Walter, Salt Chamber aged Fillet Steak, 200 grams of pure heaven. It was served perfectly medium rare as requested, with a Roasted Onion, Bordelaise Sauce. Having reviewed over 300 Restaurants, our taster referred to this Fillet as “melt in the mouth doesn’t even come close, it was the softest, finest, most succulent steak I have ever tasted. I could have cut it with a spoon.” The flavours were immense, and the Salt Chamber treatment gave it a crispier coating than most steaks. The Bordelaise Sauce did not overpower either; a light drizzle was all that was provided, and interestingly, all that was needed. We chose the Triple Cooked Chips to accompany our Fillet Steak, which were also divine. Other sides on offer include Baked Potato Mash (with or without Truffle), Purple Sprouting Broccoli with Toasted Almond Butter or Turnips & Kale in Horseradish Cream.

IN SUMMARY

As we left, our stomachs full and eyes wide open to the culinary heritage that has just landed on our doorstep, we thanked Simon our host (and God!) that we live a mere 10 minutes away from The Victoria. We said we’d be back in a heartbeat and we have already booked our next meal, true to our word! The Victoria, Oxshott exceeded our expectations. Whether you want a dinner for a special occasion, a casual lunch with your friends or just a pint by the roaring fire - there is something for everyone here. Dog friendly, child friendly and most definitely top-notch food and service friendly. We hope you enjoy as much as we did.

pring has sprung and I got to enjoy this glorious weather at one of the country’s finest estates. I was honoured to be invited to a charity lunch and auction at Waddeston Manor which was hosted by Lord Rothschild. Waddesdon Manor is managed by the Rothschild Foundation, a family charitable trust. Its home to the Rothschild Collections of paintings sculpture and decorative art. The day included a private tour of some of these collections but in true Mum life style I missed the whole thing as I had to dash off to be on time for the school pick up! Luckily, I still managed to mingle with some fabulous people, eat some delicious food and take part in a charity auction with the most incredible ‘money can’t buy’ experiences. It was all for a fantastic cause - The Lady Garden Foundation, founded by a group of women including Tamara Beckwith and Jenny Halpern Prince. Caroline Clarry is involved in the charity and also the owner of Peach Ribbons. They do the best children’s bows in a huge range of colours. I have bought many bows and I think these are by far the best for quality and range of colours. The organza and velvet ones are especially gorgeous.

S AND CHARITABLE CAUSES The Lady Garden foundation helps to raise funds for gynaecological health, to help drastically reduce the diagnosis and devastating outcomes. If you are not aware, there are 5 types of gynaecological cancers; Ovarian, Cervical, Uterine, Vulval and Vaginal. They are often referred to as the silent killers, not only because of their complicated symptoms which can be missed by healthcare professionals, but also due to a lack of awareness surrounding the disease. Ladies, if you are due a check-up then please get this booked asap. Equally, if you feel as though something is not right then get it checked out, it could save your life. It has been a busy month in the Atkins household. The charity event had to be my highlight, as well as my interview with The Honourable Isobel Kershaw, who is Co-Founder and Director of The London Finishing Academy. I thought I would write up my interview in a Q and A style so you can read more about their upcoming courses, which are truly a once in a lifetime experience. If I was stuck in an elevator with you and was to ask you, ‘What is the London Finishing Academy?’ what would you say? It is an immersive experience for the mind body and soul, and for people who want to elevate their lives through the art of self-development. Who can attend? Anyone from all walks of life! Someone who feels that they want to have the confidence to rethink their lives moving forward. For example, a bride who is looking for a special experience. Somebody who is changing jobs looking to feel more confident going into a new network environment or feel confident when they are fine dining when client facing. Or perhaps someone who has gone through a personal challenge such as divorce. The words ‘Finishing’ and ‘Academy’ could be confused with someone who is at school age, but it’s not that is it?

No, we wanted to veer away from calling it a school because we don’t want people to feel like they are coming to a classroom. It’s an immersive environment where you will feel like a guest from the moment you arrive. It’s a different way of learning and practising certain skills in a more sophisticated, practical, yet modern way. You will then have those skills for life. What are the benefits of attending this course? It’s completely unique in every way. From the moment you arrive all five senses will be opened up. From the beautiful visuals of the room, the smell of the scented candles, to the taste of the exquisite food! You will be learning those social skills which will therefore give you more confidence. We will make sure that we understand each individuals personal goals so it’s very much a tailored experience, rather than learning it in a formulaic fashion. Each expert speaker will provide you with a wealth of knowledge in

an interactive way. We will help you to understand different cultures and areas of life that you might not have focused on before. It’s also a chance for people to take time out in life, and what a way to do it! Where are the courses being held? We have two locations. One at The Goring Hotel which is a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Belgravia. It has a Royal Warrant and is where Kate Middleton stayed the day before her wedding. We then have Somerley House which stages Bridgerton and The Crown. It isn’t open to the public so you will be able to walk around the house and grounds. It really is a once in a lifetime experience. We schedule each day so you will have between 4-5 modules which compliment each other. Tell me more about the guest speakers? We have world renowned speakers who are experts in their field. For example, Robin Kermode is a voice coach and he will teach you how best to use your voice for example in public speaking and interviews. We have Errol Douglass MBE who is one of the most influential hairdressers in the world. We have my Father, Lord Kershaw, who will bring his red box with him which talk about how he became a Lord and what is involved in a hereditary title. Viv Haxby is an Art Historian and she specialises in the art of beautiful homes such as Palaces and Stately Homes. She really brings it all to life. We have Sergio Giacomelli who is Royal Ballet trained and will teach you the art of movement, pose and posture and how to dance. I adore style and fashion. Tell me what I can learn from you? I have been in the fashion industry for 30 years and I talk very much about the psychology of dressing and understanding what you are putting on every day and how you want to feel. That level of communication is so powerful. I will get people to think more about how they are projecting their personalities through their clothes. We all work hard and spend money on clothes but do we make the right decisions? People might be a bit fearful that I am going to be talking about designer clothing but its actually nothing to do with

110 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

that, it’s about how you work your clothes to suite your body shape and lifestyle. You could put on something from Zara and make it look a million dollars by the way in which you put it together. We will also be discussing the importance of body language. A lot of us are stooping at the moment due to online working and constantly being on our phones. We are giving you more of these skills to build up your confidence. I always say to people your CV gets you in the room but your personality, presence and demeanour can get you the job. Fine dining etiquette is one of the topics that you will be covering. Tell me more about that. We want to take it from a different angle rather than the very basics of where your knives and forks should go. We want to pull in the psychology behind it to allow people to feel confident and to be able to relax. Whether you are going on a personal evening out, a date night or networking with clients or even to understand the menu. We want to give people confidence but to also feel relaxed as you will be practising theses skills in life. What can I learn about tablescaping? Rula who is co-founder of The London Finishing Academy, is a world-renowned luxury party planner and she is behind the production side of our company. I have worked with Rula for many years and every time I have seen one of her productions I am blown away by the visual aspect and how unique and creative it is. People don’t think about it but if your tablescape is beautiful it makes for a wonderful evening. If you set the standard, then you know your guests will make the effort too. If you would like to find more information then please visit www.thelondonfinishingacademy.com or check out their Instagram @thelondonfinishingacademy One thing is for sure, you are guaranteed to be blown away by this completely unique experience.

APRIL Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what APRIL will bring for you! Oracle Card

Oracle cards compliment Tarot perfectly and although many people often wonder if there is much of a difference between the two, they couldn’t be further apart in terms of wisdom and knowledge. Oracle cards are used as tools of self-reflection and can be interpreted by anyone. Tarot cards however are used to tell a story and are interpreted by people who are able to guide others through their magical tale. The oracle deck used for this reading is feelings and colours based. This means that the card chosen will explain what your main emotion may be for April and what colour is associated with it. This month’s card is ‘Comfort’, and its colour is pink. When ‘Comfort’ comes up in a reading, it signals that you need some more self-care in your life. Nourish your higher self and invite comfort into your inner circle.

Six of Pentacles

Your main card for this month is the Six of Pentacles. This card is all about giving and receiving, especially finding those who are worthy of your gifts (literal and metaphorical) and who you are happy receiving from. Sharing your wealth is important this month, whether that be taking the people you love most out for dinner or sharing the happiness that you have been feeling lately to try and make others feel as good as you. Generosity is a word that may stay in the back of your mind this month, as you will begin to understand the

importance of helping people who need it most. Give back to those who deserve your time and attention and don’t forget to take care of yourself as well.

Ten of Pentacles

The Ten of Pentacles indicates wealth and financial security. If you have been worrying about work lately, give yourself a little break to get your thoughts together and calm your mind. Wealth can be defined in many ways, whether it be money, health or happiness. Spending time with family may be beneficial this month because, as said earlier, comfort is key in April. Long-term success is a goal to keep in mind, as working hard today will build a better and brighter future for yourself and the people you love. Contribute to projects you feel need your attention and trust that you are right where you need to be.

Five of Swords

Your final card for April is the Five of Swords. This card often means to watch out for any conflict that may arise and to not let any disagreements ruin your day. You may be feeling a slight competition with someone you know, but remember that everyone’s journey is completely different, and just because someone gets somewhere first, doesn’t mean you won’t get there too. Don’t let defeat get the better of you, as even though there may be setbacks on your path, you know to never give up. By Pia Louisa

Baby, you’re a firework now and yes, people or maybe that key audience of one are going ‘Oh, oh, oh!’ as your fierceness blazes a trail. What you project or put out there is all-important and shyness – not that you are known for that, has no place in anything you attempt this month. Neither have apologies nor filters. Own who you are, as you are now entering one of the most important cycles for goal-getting greatness you have experienced for 12 years. From the third week of the month, your values become all important. What you will or won’t ‘settle’ for or sell your soul over. Time to take a stand and also look at how you work your self-worth. Hopefully you’re showing the world how you value yourself. It’s not narcissism, it’s pure, explosive radiance. Radiate to attract, Aries.

Your beliefs around what is or isn’t possible undergo a radical review in the weeks leading up to your birthday. Expect the process to continue right up until October as possibilities open up to you that you never dreamed existed. Once you see them, do act on them however. Dreaming isn’t enough. But your beliefs around what you can do or are able to achieve should act as signposts towards something bigger which will take you on into ‘23 if you follow through. Your birthday season offers beautiful gatherings with friends. Bask in their love and generosity now. The month’s end could see you launch a new plan which you are not yet ready to share or reveal with the world. That’s fine. Goals which are nurtured in the dark sprout the shoots of success in May.

124 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

Time to look at what you want to achieve, Gemini. And get serious about just how you do that. Goals, wishes and dreams are highlighted relating to your career. Climbing that stairway to success and boss moves feature. But what is most important to remember is that for you now, success is self-defined so don’t go borrowing anyone else’s template. That being said, CEO’s, movers and shakers, those with influence, VIP’s and gatekeepers to the next level – someone may simply help you up to the next level. It’s important you project confidence when it comes to what you want to achieve or where you want to get to. Watch the end of the month and stay tuned to your ability to translate subtext or pick up on non-verbal clues. What someone says may not actually align with their intentions. Your gut is your best guide.

Travel, freedom, opportunity, the lands and people of far, far away feature this month. As could the great outdoors or the mass media. If Covid has clipped your wings, April sees you spreading them again. You’re about to enter something bigger or more breathtaking. Solutions to anything that has kept you stuck could appear – if you go looking. You’re more aware than usual of the huge variety of possibilities around you. In fact, they may wink on like stars to guide you down fresh pathways. A bit like Stephen Strange in Kamar Taj, your mind opens. The magical cloak is optional although foreign destinations may feature now for some of you. The important thing to remember this month is to set the positive in motion, you need to be willing to go down a path not taken with openness. The end of the month could see someone reveal their true colours.

As a sign designed to stand out, April turns up that golden, Leo glow. Prepare to be noticed and also understand this is no time to be a shrinking violet. What’s important now is for you to work your worth. Not to undersell yourself in any situation. This doesn’t just include your professional life but your personal one too. It may be time to ask if you have made one compromise too many. Money, investments, loans, mortgages, your salary, benefits and anything you share with another – from a bed to a joint account becomes a treasure trove or a bone of contention now. If you are negotiating, stay connected to that 24 carat standard of self-worth. Romance could cross a threshold or heat up. Just take your time if all that radiance attracts someone new. All that glitters or is oh-so-hot could turn to brassy tepid quickly if the outer doesn’t match the inner. Deservedness isn’t arrogance. It’s your gold standard this month, Leo.

Destiny driven duos, duets and double acts of all descriptions continue to feature and one should be front-and-centre for you this April. You have a decision to be made and what is most important for you is to ensure that love is grounded in reality and not encased in a rosy pink bubble of false hope and projection. It is a fabulous time for singles to meet that special someone. But again, you need to fall in love with the real person and not the fantasy. That decision could just as easily require you consciously uncouple as it could make a permanent commitment. Also be aware that the perfect partnership for you right now could just as easily be that working or collaborative one or that bestie who feels like a soulmate as it could the romantic kind. It’s all love after all. If travelling at the end of the month allow extra time and check everything from your connections to your destination. In fact, don’t leave home without a Plan B or alternative route in mind.

Spring cleaning that routine or those bad habits brings you big benefits this month. But chances are up until the third week you are also focussed on the business of love. You’ll need to know where you stand with a key someone now. There’s no more room for ambiguity. Or time wasters for that matter. Settled Librans should definitely sit down for a productive heart-to-heart. Singles will want to know that beau’s intentions. Or ask them what they are seeking right from the get-go. The result sees you on course for getting what you want, Libra. Be cautious when it comes to getting too involved too quickly without knowing where the other party is coming from. And if someone is pushing an agenda, ask yourself why the rush? The same goes for big financial decisions around the end of the month. Know what you are getting into. Or should I say buying into? If you feel the need to put the brakes on, don’t hesitate. Choices are abound as you go into May, so don’t settle.

Take care of the small stuff as April begins Scorpio and free yourself for the big stuff later in the month. And yes, it is all small stuff when you chunk it down to size. Your day job – paid or unpaid, those habits, that rut or routine as well as the everyday environment you operate in, becomes ultra-important. And it may well need adjustment or an upgrade. Baby steps in the right direction net you big results. Doing this opens the door to more time for what (or who) you love as romance and long-term love is highlighted for you. Especially as we head into May. Babies, children, those younger than you, parenting or that lover who could turn you into a parent or step-parent could feature. As could getting yourself noticed for doing what you love. It’s time to make some stand out, shining moves this April. Which could include you making that first move to kick-start the love, Scorpio.

You’re off in pursuit of that dream for most of April, Sag. Just what form it is taking will depend on those wishes and desires. For some this may take the form of home or a relocation. Others could be chasing happiness in the form of love, a hobby or creative self-expression. What you are seeking could well be accessed right where you are so there’s no need to take a ‘grass is greener’ approach. Adjust your perspective and watch how hidden possibilities come into focus. Holidays, parties and playfulness are set to take you on into May. And yes, that all-time favourite Sag activity travel is very much back on the menu for you. However, in your desire to experience romance and good times, don’t neglect the details or what underpins your daily life from the third week onwards. If you neglect to pay attention you could have a mess to clear up come the end of the month. Can you have too much of a good thing? Yes, if it stops you from enjoying yourself to the full. Maintain your focus for fun, Sag.

Good news could be heading your way - or you can write yourself a bestselling success story this April, Capricorn. There’s a saying: It took me 12 years to become an overnight sensation. And it may apply to you this month although success may taste all the sweeter for it. Decisions around home, living arrangements or lifestyle could factor into this, leaving you with a profound sense of self-worth and satisfaction. Lighten up and allow yourself time to celebrate or simply open up to the good things of life from the third week onwards. Attraction is a force just like gravity and you super-charge it when you adopt a playful approach to what you want. Especially when it comes to love and romance. Do however, go into anything new with a clear sense of self and what you are seeking. I could say have a shopping list of qualities in mind. Yes, you can playfully ask the questions to see if that potential boo has them. And just as lightly leave if they don’t. But beautiful surprises could be in store for you now. Lighten up this April.

Asking all the right questions or testing those ideas for long term viability pays off for you this month, Aquarius. Do your due diligence and ensure you have your facts straight. Above all, don’t fudge your facts or pretend you know the answers when you don’t. And if someone isn’t being transparent in return or leaves you with doubts, take note. Money matters take on new meaning and many of you could see the bottom line improve. If you find yourself with extra cash or a new income stream, then its important to look to your future rather than simply frittering it away in the present. I’m not saying you don’t deserve a reward for your hard work. Just that looking at how you can make your money work harder for you may bring you greater security and satisfaction in the long term. A new and potentially soul-worthy boosting liaison could appear for some of you. Someone whose love and/or support you feel you can literally ‘bank on’. If so, you’ve earned it now.

Yes you continue to be the brightest star in the sky, Pisces. And the one most likely to attract those dreams and desires. As with all things, make the most of it as from next month the energy will change. For now, it’s no time to just sit back and expect the fabulous line up of planets in your sign to act like a combination of Santa Claus and Fairy Godmother. Heaven helps those who help themselves. Whatever it is you want to have, achieve or experience, you need to take whatever steps you can towards it. Then watch as fresh paths towards satisfaction open up. If money has been holding up progress, April should provide you with a solution or see you reaching for something more sustainable. Your image, appearance, style, brand, social media feed and personal message continues to be an all-important part of your success story. Invest or upgrade as needed. If you feel it, you can be it. No faking till you make it required, Pisces.

Big Brother 17 winner Jason Burrill shot to fame after winning the reality TV Show ‘Big Brother’ in 2016. Since then, he’s forged a successful career in acting, starring in ‘The Serpent’ and being a body double in James Bond film ‘Spectre’ and ‘Guardian’s of the Galaxy’ aswell as property developing alongside his charitable work. We caught up with the big guy at Lady Wimbledon’s IWD event and quizzed him for this month’s 60 Second Interview. Enjoy.

JASON BURRILL WHAT WAS IT LIKE WINNING BIG BROTHER 17?

Everything I do I do to win. No one wants to come second. So, the moment I was told I had won I had two emotions. The winning which was great and secondly knowing within minutes I could finally step outside the house into normality/space/fresh air. The freedom to move around without being watched 24/7. To be able to go to the toilet and not smile at the camera looking down on you!!

WAS IT HARD LIVING IN THE HOUSE FOR 50 DAYS?

Yes! The lack of food for someone my size and sleep deprivation for almost two months whilst living with 16 strangers of all types of “personalities”, it was difficult to stay level at all times.

WHAT DID YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE OUTSIDE WORLD? Being totally cut off from everything and not knowing how my Dad was or my dog Clio. As soon as I walked down the steps on finals night to be greeted by Emma (Willis) I whispered in her ear “Are my Dad and Clio OK?” she said, “Yes they are both fine, don’t worry Jason just enjoy your moment.” Bless her, she’s lovely.

DID YOUR LIFE CHANGE AFTER WINNING THE SHOW?

Yes and No. When you do a show like BB people have this expectation of grandeur and fame afterwards. But unless you are a one-off character like Rylan or willing to do “ANYTHING” for press to stay relevant then once the next TV show comes on a few days later you are forgotten. It all depends how much you crave the status. I chose to step away and focus on business/charity interests and choose my opportunities carefully. I played the long game as know things can be short-lived!

WHAT IS THE BEST AND WORST THING ABOUT BEING FAMOUS? I don’t think I’m famous, possibly just a bit more well known by some than others

130 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 08

than I was previously, it’s an honour to get invited to charity fundraisers and just to be part of good causes. I’ve made some good friends along the way and to be able to meet and work with real famous people that I’ve admired in sport, TV and film and now, luckily, I’m honoured to call them friends. I’ve not really seen the bad side although I am fully aware there is one.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?

Still property developing plus other business interests; filming and fundraising when I can. Still growing and learning by my mistakes.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

1. Helicopter 2. Helicopter Pilot 3. Something good to read on the way home!

IF YOU COULD PERPETUATE A MYTH ABOUT YOURSELF WHAT WOULD IT BE? Some things should last forever and others should not be perpetuated at all.

WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN THE MOVIE VERSION OF YOUR LIFE?

Two actors I hold on high regard would be Sir Anthony Hopkins (he would Play My Dad) and Benedict Cumberbatch (My brother if I had one) but to play myself would be Dave Bautista…. I’ve known him a quite a few years now and although we are similar in many ways, he is the most humble and hardworking guy I have met in the industry. I’ve played him a few times in Marvel films and James Bond so it would be justice to reverse the roles just this once!!

WHO ARE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS?

The three guys I’ve just mentioned. Or Putin and Zelensky and sort this shit out!

BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?

Do not make the same mistake twice. If it’s

not working - get out and move onto the next thing. Give 100% in everything you do and if it doesn’t work then at least you can say you have given it your best shot.

MOST EMBARRASSING ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE?

A size 16 clingy black dress that fits like a glove!! (It was for a Halloween Cluedo party once) HONEST!

WHAT ALL THE LADIES WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE? Yes……

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A WOMAN? Funny, loyal, respectful, not social media orientated, likes to travel, eat out but grounded, sporty and love of animals. Attractive and affectionate. (Sounds like a Tinder bio!)

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP? Footballer, Rich or a Policeman! Played semi-pro for years and now play charity fund raising games. Still working on the rich bit! And more chance of the first two than the police force ever taking me on!! (Long story)
