EDITOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the April Issue of Surrey Rocks Magazine.

It’s a busy one in Surrey this month with lots of new openings including ProCook in Kingston, The Boat House in Guildford, The Bridge in Weybridge, Surrey Side Boys in Leatherhead and Webbers Waste in Epsom. Read Natalie’s story on page 114, a true inspiration for mums and working women out there.

Elsewhere we visited the wonderful Narenj in Kingston for a delicious taste of Persian cuisine and caught up with Vogue Williams for our April fashion shoot with Little Mistress on page 46. Plus in more fashion news, there are trailblazing blazers galore in For Her and a nod to ‘Joker 2’ star Joaquin Phoenix in the For Him news pages. Would you wear a grungy brown suit? Sounds hideous but actually 32% of men would according to our recent poll.

It was so lovely to catch up with the DJ, presenter and author Mike Read for this month’s Rock Out interview talking about his new play ‘City of Dreams’ that is hitting Esher Theatre this month. The play is full of comedy, love stories and great lyrics that Read wrote from scratch giving a nod to composer Eric Coates and the bard himself, William Shakespeare. Great for any aged audience and will be starring Peter Straker, Leee John while directed by Starlight Express’s Ray Shell. Not to be missed from 25th-29th April.

Then there’s Celebs, Beauty, Fashion, Films, Books, Recipes, Skinted v Minted, What’s On, Calendar, Hair Trends, Dating, Gastronomy, Horoscopes, Awards, Funny, Self Care and Sustainable Fashion by our new columnist Lottie Hammond-Wright who puts it out there - could second be best? A very informative and entertaining read.

Til’ next time,

STYLES & RATAJKOWSKI SHARE PASSIONATE KISS

Singer Harry Styles and model Emily Ratajkowski were seen in Tokyo sharing a passionate French kiss leaning up against a car while the former boyband member fondled her derriere.

It is not sure whether these two are yet an item as nothing has been confirmed by the pair.

An insider who knows Emily, said however: “She is having fun and enjoys the attention from guys. She hooked up with Harry, but they are not in touch every day. Emily is interested in seeing him again though.”

Styles, 29, has only just split from long term girlfriend actress and director Olivia Wilde whom he dated for 2 years, so it’s all a bit new for him. Meanwhile, Emily, 31, filed for divorce from husband Sebastian Bear in September 2022 after 4 years of marriage. They share a son Sylvester Apollo who turned two earlier this month.

PAUL O’ GRADY PASSES

It is with deep regret and sadness that we report the passing of well known and loved British comedian Paul O’ Grady aka Lilly Savage aged only 67.

The northern entertainer loved by Great Britain passed away “unexpectedly but peacefully” on the evening of 28th March, according to his husband, professional ballerina Andre Portasio.

He also said: “We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.”

Andre added: “I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”

ANGELINA & DAVID GET FRIENDLY

Angelina Jolie and David Mayer de Rothschild were out for a long lunch in LA last month, lasting 3 hours according to gossip column Page Six.

Jolie, 47, and the 44-year-old billionaire environmentalist made every mouthful count as they stayed at Nobu in LA for their record 3 hour lunch. UN ambassador Jolie has not been linked to anyone since her split from Brad Pitt while David is an eco-warrior and adventurer who has undertaken expeditions including a 100-day crossing of the Arctic from Russia to Canada and an 8,000 nautical mile sailing journey from San Francisco to Sydney on a sustainable ship he himself made out of recycled bottles.

This could be a match made in LA Heaven.

We can’t wait for the wedding pics! The Rothschild family boast a $500 billion net worth so if this relationship was to go the distance there would be no expense spared at the nuptials!

PHILLIP SCHOFIELD BROTHER IN SEX ABUSE SCANDAL

DAVID JASON REUNITED WITH DAUGHTER

Its hardly shocking news that a famous actor fathers a child he knows nothing about, especially when that child was conceived in the ‘Swinging Sixties!’

But David Jason, star of ‘Only Fools and Horses’ has been shouting from the rooftops since he met his now 52-year-old daughter Abbie and discovered he also has a 10-year-old grandson, called Charlie.

“To say it was a surprise to find out I had a daughter from years ago is an understatement. However, on settling with the news, I am delighted that I am now able to get to know Abi and

so we meet up when we can. My wife, Gill, and daughter, Sophie, have been very supportive and understanding and have embraced Abi and welcomed her and her young son into her now wider family.”

Abi, who is also an actor and Charlie even spend time with David, 83, at his Buckinghamshire home with his 22-year-old daughter Sophie with wife Lady Gill White. Abi guessed David was her Dad after realising they had the same nose and working out her actress mum Jennifer had a relationship with Jason in the late 60’s.

‘This Morning’ host Phillip Schofield has been pictured for the first time since his brother Timothy’s trial for 11 child sex abuse charges started in Exeter this week.

Phillip, 60, looked drawn and pale as he collected a takeaway.

He has been given compassionate leave from presenting the ITV morning show and it is not sure when he will return, with Alison Hammond co-presenting the show with Holly Willoughby for now.

Timothy, aged 54, is alleged to have sexually abused a child over the space of 3 years. One charge involves a sex act with a child while others include allegedly forcing the victim to watch pornography.

The alleged offences, which Timothy Schofield from Bath denies, took place between 2016 and 2019, while he worked for Avon and Somerset Police.

The new Joker 2 film ‘Joker : Folie a Deux’ will be hitting our screens in 2024. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the film is already being billed as the cinematic

Directed by ‘The Hangover’s’ Todd Phillips and produced by ‘Silver Lining Playbooks’ Bradley Cooper it is no surprise, despite not being released till October 2024, with such a stellar team behind the film including Warner Bros. and DC Comics, that it is already garnering so much press interest. What is a surprise, however, is how much attention is being lavished on the costume department. The Joker played by Phoenix has already been papped behind the scenes in Gotham City (aka New York) wearing a grungy, brown suit that is widely tipped to be the fashion item of the year. everywhere, the effortlessly cool Phoenix pulls this off with panache.

British GQ has already hailed the outfit choice saying:

“It's a junked, thrift store, “oh, I've only heard on 12 inch” kind've cool. Which means a brown suit – an ever-trending colour – in a boxy, wider fit with meaty lapels, and a shirt in a specific Pantone of ‘washed out care home curtains’. This is a suit that fits in all the right places. It's grungy to look at, but still appealing in a way that sings to any fan of The Strokes; those that saw beauty and valour in dirty hair and proper tailoring that sat naturally on trustfund indie boys. It's a suit for the unseen cool guy that gets the girl at the end of ‘500 Days of Summer’.”

The trend for seventies tailoring has also hit down to the catwalks with fashion brands including Casablanca, Canali and Brunello Cucinelli going for looks like Phoenix’s Joker. See Skinted v Minted for some of these looks.

But would you? Surrey Rocks conducted an online poll and only 30% of respondents would wear a brown suit like the Phoenix’s in ‘Joker 2’. At least if you follow the trends guys you will be one of the only ones in the brown suit brigade at Summer weddings!

RECIPE

EASTER LAMB - BRUSHED WITH MASHED-UP GARLICKY MINT

This delicious recipe from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver with notes of garlic, mint and fennel is a great twist on a classic roast lamb recipe. Dare to be different this Easter and have all your guests singing your praises.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 6)

• 1 quality leg of lamb, about 2kg

• Sea salt

• Freshly ground black pepper

• 1 large bunch fresh mint leaves, picked

• 1 clove garlic, peeled

• 125ml olive oil

• 250ml organic chicken stock

• 600g new potatoes, sliced thickly

• 100g baby fennel, trimmed and cut in half lengthways

• 225g baby carrots, tops trimmed

• 100g baby leeks, trimmed

• 200g courgettes, sliced lengthways

• 250g fine or yellow beans, trimmed

• 150g asparagus, trimmed to 6cm lengths

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7.

2. Score the lamb all over and season. Using a pestle and mortar, or in a food processor, pound or blend the mint leaves with the garlic and seasoning until smooth. Slowly

add the olive oil to your mixture then brush all over the lamb. Roast in the oven for 1½ hours, brushing with the seasoned oil regularly until the lamb is cooked.

3. While the meat is resting, remove the fat from the roasting tin. Add the stock to the tin and make a light, tasty broth by boiling and dissolving all the goodness at the bottom.

4. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling, salted water for 5 minutes. Add the fennel and carrots and cook for a further 5 minutes. Then add the rest of the vegetables and simmer for another 5 minutes.

5. Carve your lamb then serve the vegetables in a shallow bowl with the lamb on top and a little broth and mint oil drizzled over.

WINE PAIRING

When it comes to thinking about what wine goes with Lamb there is one golden rule to follow… always pick red. White and rose wine can rarely do justice to the rich and delicious flavours of lamb, so a red wine should be your choice for your wine pairing with lamb.

The main exceptions are some Indian or Greek-style dishes which can have a strong lemon component as well as yoghurt or feta and mint. In these cases, stronger dry rosés are a good option.

Almost all red wines will enhance the flavours of a beautiful lamb dish, but some go with certain dishes more than others. Lamb has a natural affinity with two grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon (a good Bordeaux will work here) and Tempranillo. A Spanish oak-aged Rioja also goes particularly well with garlic and mint.

If you prefer a more delectable, perfumed wine modern labels from New Zealand or Chile are fantastic but are a little on the pricey side. However, Easter is surely a time for a treat so indulge.

MOVIE REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE

A great family, fun Easter movie that both adults (who grew up playing the Nintendo game of the same name!) and kids will surely love.

The plot remains a bit of a mystery though. The film’s website doesn’t have many details either, describing it only as “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.”

The cool trailer suggests Mario and his Italian brother, Luigi, come from Earth and travel to, or get transported into, the Mushroom Kingdom, where Bowser is planning a takeover. Luigi gets captured by Bowser leaving Mario to embark on an adventure with Princess Peach and pal the Toad to save the Universe from Bowser’s threat.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who were collaborators on the ‘Teen Titans Go’ Movie and from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel behind ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’, this new film has a stellar cast of Hollywood A-Listers including ‘Jurassic Park’s’ Chris Pratt stars as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Shigeru Miyamoto for Nintendo. The film, cofinanced by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, is being released worldwide on April 5th, just in time for the Easter Holidays. We hope you enjoy!

FUSE - EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL

90’s hitmakers, Everything But The Girl, are releasing their first new studio album in over 24 years, out on April 21st.

The first single from the 10-track album called ‘Nothing Left To Lose’ is a belter. Written and produced by Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn over the springsummer of 2021, Fuse is a modern take on the lustrous electronic soul the band first pioneered in the mid-90s. Thorn’s affecting and richly-textured voice is once again up front in Watt’s glimmering landscape of sub-bass, sharp beats, half-lit synths and empty space, and as before, the result is the sound of a band comfortable with being both sonically contemporary, yet agelessly themselves.

Speaking about the band’s reemergence and new album, Thorn revealed, “Ironically the finished sound of the new album was the last thing on our mind when we started in March 2021. Of course, we were aware of the pressures of such a long-awaited comeback, so we tried to begin instead in a spirit of openminded playfulness, uncertain of the direction, receptive to invention.”

The pair recorded ‘Fuse’ with friend and engineer Bruno Ellingham. For the first two months, the artist name on the album files was simply TREN (Tracey and Ben), and early takes focused on ambient sound montages and improvised spectral piano loops recorded by Ben on his iPhone at home during his enforced pandemic isolation - ideas which later blossomed into atmospheric tracks such as ‘When You Mess Up’ and ‘Interior Space.’ Shot through with alternating hope, desperation and vivid flashbacks, the lyrics on this album although allusive are richly detailed and capture what it’s like to start again.

YOU KNOW YOU LOVE IT - MATT FIELDER

Imagine ‘Spinal Tap’ meets ‘The Dirt’ at ‘Bad News’ Rock and you’ll be somewhere close to visualising this autobiographical account of one man’s (seemingly!) doomed journey into Rock ‘n’ Roll obscurity. However that said, this book is actually a joyous ‘Rock ‘n’ Roller’ coaster ride through all the ups and downs of being in an outmoded eighties metal band.

Just trying to ‘make it‘ all set against a backdrop of alienation, apathy and indifference, in the ‘Grunge fest’ that was the early nineties rock scene.

A self-depreciating, engaging and very, very honest account taken from the diaries of Hurricane Jane frontman Matt Fielder who now fronts the 4-piece rock band Ransom.

It is an absolute hysterical, laugh out loud, engaging read throughout - at only 200 pages long it’s also the perfect adult bedtime story (!) or journey companion and just as the title suggests... ‘You know you’re gonna love it!’

We thoroughly recommend this new novel by local Surrey lad Fielder – it really is an insightful tale and a laugh a minute.

Published by Austin Macauley

‘You Know You Love It’ is available to buy online and from all good bookshops including Waterstone’s and WHSmith on March 31st.

Introduces a revolutionary weight loss
LIGHT TOUCH A multi-award winning cosmetic skin clinic, Light Touch, brings a 5* London experience to the leafy suburbs of Weybridge, Surrey.

CLINIC

Dr Go Figure is a revolutionary weight loss programme, using the most cutting edge and innovative technology to essentially bio hack your way to faster more effective weight loss. Dr Go Figure is all about improving the way we lose weight. This is not a quick fix Faddy diet.

How does this programme work?

We use the Emerald laser to liquidise and release the fat from the fat cell. We then use a lymphatic drainage suit to break down the released fat allowing it to be metabolised away quickly.

We combine this with EMS - Electro muscle stimulation personal training. This involves wearing a suit that delivers electrical impulses externally to the muscles. This means that when you’re doing something like a simple bicep curl, you are also building muscles in your thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, back shoulders, et cetera) you can do a full body workout in only 20 minutes. By combining the Emerald laser with EMS we are able to deliver safe, effective weight loss, approximately 30% faster than doing it on your own.

The Dr Go Figure programme also includes nutritional coaching, 3-D scanning, so we can see improvements in body composition and podcasts to educate you on how your body works, and the kind of nutrition it needs.

The Dr Go Figure programme is available exclusively at Light Touch Clinic Weybridge. It is one of the most cutting-edge weight loss programmes available today.

To try the Emerald laser quote EmeraldRocks for a £75 intro session. Call or email to find out more.

Rock Out Interview...

‘City of Dreams’ is premiering this month at Esher Theatre. Starring Lee John, Peter Straker and a star-studded cast directed by Ray Shell from ‘Starlight Express’, ‘Five Guys Named Moe’ and ‘The Bodyguard’. The play is taken from the book written by Mike Read, the Surrey based BBC Radio 1 DJ and former ‘Top of the Pops’ presenter. We were lucky enough to catch up with the talented author and find out all about his show set to take Surrey by storm with 9 productions in 5 days from 25th – 29th April.

MIKE READ

FEATURES

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR ‘CITY OF DREAMS’ COME ABOUT?

I am a huge fan of Eric Coates, the British composer. I was listening to him in the car one day and started singing some words to go with his music – I had a Eureka moment. It is a bit like seeing someone and falling in love... there was something special about this and I just knew I had to pursue it. I raced back home and finished the first song from the book in one night.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO WRITE THE BOOK?

I wrote the whole book in under 6 weeks. I was so excited I just had to get it out there.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?

It’s a bit of a soap really with three intertwined love stories. I tried to make it a bit different. It’s basically ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ in Piccadilly! It’s not actually the Shakespeare play but the characters take their names from there. The club owners are called ‘Obi’ and ‘Titty’ after Oberon and Titania. It’s a bit of a comedy too. There really is something for everyone.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE THE BOOK?

Eric Coates was told by the media in the 1930’s and 1940’s that he had to find a lyricist as his music was so well suited to the stage. But he never did and sadly he died in 1957, having never had the chance to do a musical. Well, here’s his first musical all these years later!! I really feel this is an ode to Coates and this is a really good, new musical.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 30

THERE ARE SO MANY REHASHES THESE DAYS SO IT’S GREAT YOU HAVE COME UP WITH AN ORIGINAL PRODUCTION. Yeah you’re right. When most people put on musicals they simply take songs from an artist like Queen, Meatloaf or Abba and whack it on stage. There is not a great deal of thought process that goes behind itbut I suppose they are easier to sell. There was a lot of originality that went into ‘City of Dreams’ and Ray the director even said that it genuinely sounds like the lyrics and music were written together.

HOW DID YOU COME TO PRESENT ‘CITY OF DREAMS’ TO ESHER THEATRE?

Well I was randomly talking to Charlie the owner of Esher Theatre and he asked me if I knew of any good musicals. And obviously I had to reply: “I have my own musical!” And it basically snowballed from there!

WILL YOU BE PRODUCING ANY MORE MUSICALS?

Funny you should say that. When Oscar Hemmerstein’s grandfather first arrived in New York with only a few dollars in his pocket, he built himself up from nothing till he was a theatre owner. He was talking to a writer one day and asked him how long it took him to write a play. When the writer replied “one year”, Oscar came back with, “I bet I can write one in 2 days.” And the bet was on! He stayed in a hotel in New York for 2 full days and did nothing but write, even having food delivered with just a piano and manuscript. What made it even funnier was the writer sent an organ grinder to the hotel playing music from his own play to try and put Oscar

off. He changed rooms and got back to writing the play and did it. That’s exactly what I want to do go into a hotel by the sea with a microphone, a laptop and spend 2 days producing an amazing play.

‘CITY OF DREAMS’ IS ON AT ESHER THEATRE FROM 25TH – 29TH APRIL. IS IT NERVEWRACKING KNOWING THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IT’S GOING OUT?

Yes it is! It’s the worldwide premiere. It’s either going to tank or go global! Watch this space!!

YOU HAVE HAD AN AMAZING CAREER MIKE – WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT?

I’m not sure I have a highlight, more of a series of highlights really! Although, I think as a songwriter you are always delighted when someone records and performs your song and you get to listen to it on the radio or at a concert and you literally say “I can’t believe it – I wrote that sitting at my kitchen table” it’s a surreal and amazing experience.

WHAT SONG WERE YOU MOST PROUD OF WRITING?

I was lucky enough to have 5 major hits. But I suppose my biggest hit was ‘Grief Never Grows Old’ which got to number 4 and was sung by Rory and Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, Cliff Richard and The Beach Boys.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 32

IT MUST BE AMAZING TO CREATE ALL THIS ORIGINAL CONTENT?

I have to quote one of my interviewees here, Neil Sedaka, who said in his classic American drawl when I asked him what was it like being a songwriter... “These (my songs) are my babies and I send them out into the world – and they send me money home!” Songwriting is like that but you don’t have to pay for their education!

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 33 Do you want to sing and dance through Piccadilly Circus in the midsummer of 1932 with a hint of Shakespeare? HAILEY HAILS CONTROVERSY

Hailey Bieber is one of those girls….you either love or hate her. Nepotism, rich husband, IT girl - most don’t like her ‘easy’ road in life as the daughter of Hollywood actor Stephen Baldwin and neice of Alec Baldwin and go down the hate road.

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 36

CONTROVERSY

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 37

Ithink it’s safe to say that her husband Justin Bieber’s ex Selena Gomez is in the latter ‘hate’ camp too, despite proclaiming to not be!

And Hailey has been gaining a lot of column inches lately for allegedly being cruel to Selena Gomez by a supposed body shaming video on Tik Tok in January this yearwhich saw the hashtag #TeamHailey fall to 175 million views. In comparison #TeamSelena received 1.8 billion views.

Gomez responded to the claims of the dig…“It’s ok! I don’t let these things get me down! Be nice to everyone! x.”

BROW BASHING

So where did this feud all start? Well brows actually! Believe it or not!

Back in 2018 Gomez posted a Tik Tok saying how she had accidentally over-laminated her brows. Literally a few hours later Hailey posted a screenshot of her FaceTiming Kylie Jenner with a close up of their brows - obviously a dig at Selena’s beauty faux pas. Despite saying there was no feud, Gomez responded to a fan who commented “mean girls and nepo babies” with “I love you” a day after the brow FaceTime dig. Gomez then disappeared from social media saying “I’m 30. I’m too old for this,” a day after.

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 38

MAKING UP

So where does the hate come from? It doesn’t take a psychologist to work out that despite being a perfect size 6, a model and beauty, Hailey has reservations about Selena as she dated her now spouse for 8 years. Not a drop in the ocean, that is a serious relationship, that is love. Or was love. And Selena is loved by millions. Having paved her way as a singer, actress, producer and businesswoman she is self-made.

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 39

And Hailey has to put up with Gomez’ fans taunting her husband at gigs too, which must play on her. The crowd were chanting “fuck Hailey” when Justin made a surprise appearance at Rolling Loud festival last year.

Luckily the girls have taken the higher plain and have publicly spoken out in support of each other. “Hailey Bieber reached out to me and let me know that she has been receiving death threats and such hateful negativity,” Selena shared. “This isn’t what I stand for. No one should have to experience hate or bullying. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop.”

Hailey expressed her gratitude for Selena speaking out. She went on to explain that everyone, including herself, could stand to be more careful with what they say and post online. She said: “I want to thank Selena for speaking out, as her and I have been discussing the last few weeks how to move past this ongoing narrative between her and I. The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this, which is extremely harmful. While social media is an incredible way to connect and build community, moments like this only create extreme division instead of bringing people together.” Well done girls!

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 40

STYLE QUEEN

While the media has been full of controversial comments about Hailey (unfairly because of Selena, we think) there is one thing that’s plain to see. Hailey has a great sense of style. She is the foremost poster girl for the dressed down look! Thank god for those of us fed up tottering about in heels!!

Hailey is always papped for her cool, trend-setting looks that mainly involve streetwear dressing, oversized tees and trainers. She is a very successful model in her own right too, gaining the adulation and sponsorship of brands including YSL, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and Vogue Eyewear. She has also set up her own skincare range called Rhode which is making all the right moves, advocating a natural beauty look with lots of shine. Unlike the heavily powdered, contoured make-up that takes girls 2 hours to apply everyday.

NARENJ

This delightful Persian restaurant located on the river in Kingston-Upon-Thames serves delicious Mezes, Mixed Grills and delicious Persian Mains including Stews, Grills, Seafood and sumptuous Sides.

If you are unsure about Persian/Iranian cuisine, this is the perfect introduction.

The service is warm and welcoming at Narenj and the décor is amazing with carved stone walls adorned with bright works of Persian and mythical art. Plus you have the added bonus

of beautiful river views if you select a table at the back of the restaurant. Or you can opt for the private dining room upstairs for parties of 10 or more.

Narenj has stood the test of time (in 12 years - Brexit, Covid and 2 Recessions!) for one good reason - the food is amazing. Read on to fully explore...

RESTAURANT REVIEW SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 68

TO START

With such a wide and varied menu of 18 hot and cold starters available at Narenj, on the helpful advice of owner Parsa we went for a selection of Mixed Meze including Mast-O-Mouseer; yoghurt with finely chopped wild garlic, Mast-O-Khiar; yoghurt with finely chopped cucumber and dried mint, Mirza Kashk-eBadmajan; cooked aubergine with herbs and whey and Mirza Ghasemi; smoked aubergine with tomato free range eggs and garlic, plus Narenj’s traditional Homous garnished with olives and a fresh Salad Shirazi.

This was a wonderful introduction to all the unique and fresh Persian appetisers and despite coming with a large oven baked Persian Naan Bread cut neatly into squares to dip, this was not too filling as all the ingredients were healthy and relatively low calorie. Our waistlines were pleased too!

RESTAURANT REVIEW SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 69

FOR MAINS

You can’t go to a Persian Restaurant without trying their Grills.

We went for a Mixed Grill for 2 People which came with two Skewers of Koobideh; charcoal grilled tender minced lamb, one Skewer of Joojeh; marinated chicken breast fillet and one Skewer of Chenjeh; diced lamb fillet. All the meat was succulent and bursting with flavour.

The Mixed Grill came with sides of grilled tomatoes, chips and Zereshk rice. We were also offered dips of chilli and garlic mayo – which we happily selected – enabling us to heat up or cool down our tasty Mixed Grill for our desired taste experience.

If Grills are not your thing, there is a wide range of alternative Persian dishes on the menu. We will definitely be back to try one of the traditional stews like the Ghormeh Sabzi; a stew of parsley, coriander, chives, red kidney beans and lamb or the Fesenjoon Stew; sweet and sour chicken made with pomegranate paste and ground walnuts. Yum, imagine the taste explosion! There is also a wide range of Seafood Dishes to enjoy including Charcoal Grilled King Prawns, Sea Bass and Salmon and Vegetarian Dishes of Okra Stew and Persian Lentils with rice.

TO ACCOMPANY

Despite a wide-ranging drinks menu containing the best in local, international and Persian wines, Cocktails and Asahi and Peroni on tap, as it was a ‘school night’ our testers went for the traditional Persian tea, beautifully served in a teapot on a candlelit tray with traditional miniature glasses – it provided the perfect accompaniment to our wonderful first dining experience at Narenj.

We emphasise ‘first’ as we will definitely be back for more visits.

TINSELTOWN

As I type this, the red carpet at the 25th Academy Awards has just been walked and the fashion, but more importantly the hair, did not disappoint. One trend that dominated was the slicked-back ponytail. Kate Bosworth, Sharon Stone, Yara Shahidi and Sienna Miller all offered the lacquered-toperfection look. With either a sharp middle parting or no parting at all, the most common outcome for the ponytail was a simple, ballerina bun. This works beautifully to show off a neckline or statement earring, both of which were on the menu last night. For more impact, make like Lily James who opted for a more 90s-inspired spiky bun.

The ‘balletcore’ trend continued with little black bows, in line with what we’ve seen on the catwalks recently. Max Mara and Susan Fang showcased this trend throughout their shows, and Vanessa Hudgens and Florence Pugh used the neatly tied ribbon to add a little drama to their hair.

The ballet bun is an easy look to recreate. With the right products you can create this at home and my suggestion would be to invest in a good brush and KMS Stay Working Hairspray. Blowdry your hair with a smooth finish, before using the brush

to guide hair back to the position of your desired bun. Secure with a band and twist the ponytail into the bun shape, fix in place with a pin and finish with hairspray. This look works well for weddings, on the beach, at work and socialising. You can always add the small, black bow for some extra detail.

News

In the last issue, I introduced you to the team at Esher and mentioned we had some exciting news coming to the salon this month. Please welcome Stacy Odwell. Stacy is a natural extensions specialist and her brand of unique hand-tied extensions has gained her a celebrity clientele. She is now in our Esher salon every Wednesday and is a great addition to the team. I caught up with her to find out more.

Sam: How does it feel to be working with HARE & BONE?

Never good. Or stylish. Regular

are the best way to promote growth.

Stacy: I am thrilled to be joining the team. Your instinctive, fashion-focused and bespoke approach perfectly complements my unique brand of natural, hand-tied extensions. We share the same vision to create beautiful hair that works with an individual’s bone structure and aesthetic. I’m particularly excited about our colour partnership. Your colourists create luxe, high-shine colour that blends seamlessly, and working together, I’ve no doubt the results will be phenomenal.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 75
Extensions. Read about our latest salon addition below :) 5. Split-ends. trims 4. Hiding grey roots. Make like Naomi Watts and embrace the colour. 3. Easter. Our favourite time of year. Obviously. 2. Oribe Superfine Hairspray - if Jennifer Aniston is a fan then so are we.

Sam: What is it about extensions that made you want to specialise in them?

Stacy: Around 20 years ago, my mum’s hair started thinning temporarily after a stressful event. As I was in the hair and beauty industry I naturally looked for a solution. I spent months researching and decided to take a course in hair extensions. I studied all the various techniques and eventually found that the natural-looking results of handtied wefts were far superior to anything else so I created my own techniques to fit the wefts. As well as giving my mum her confidence back, I became hooked after seeing the self-esteem boost if gave to my clients.

Sam: What advice would you give any of our clients interested in hair extensions but concerned about commitment and aftercare?

Stacy: There are a variety of options on the market and to achieve the natural and ‘real’ look we see on celebrities, hand-tied wefts really are the gold standard. The good news with hand-tied wefts is, they are relatively low maintenance. The weft is fitted to your head

Q&A

Sienna James: Working across Fashion Weeks, who are the biggest models /celebrity hair have you done?’

I have worked with Dua Lipa and Charli XCX but when you’re working on shows it is so fastpaced that all the models and celebrities merge into one. Once I’ve had time with the creative time and designer I create a hair concept for the show and present it back for approval. When everyone is happy, I produce a team of backstage stylists and demonstrate the look to them, ensuring everyone understands what is expected. When working in fashion, hair is not the focus. It’s there to enhance the designer’s vision. Often there are three, sometimes four people working on the model at any timestylists, make-up artists, assistants and show producers so our attention is on getting the hair right and in time.

seamlessly and acts like a veil of hair, my clients tell me they can hardly even feel it’s there. You wash your hair as normal and either leave to dry naturally or blow dry for a smoother look. I advise clients to keep on top of their conditioning treatments with a hair mask once a week and add in a leave-in hair oil from time to time to keep it shiny and well-nourished. The weft needs refitting anywhere between every 6 – 8 weeks but the highestgrade quality hair can last years, so you’re only paying for the refit which makes it an economically sound option too.

Sam: And if someone is interested in having extensions, what is the next step?

Stacy: The best way to go about exploring whether it’s right for you is to book a consultation. As part of that consultation, we’ll discuss your lifestyle, your hair habits and needs and the look you’re hoping to achieve. I always welcome you to bring in images of the look you’re inspired by. This is your chance to raise any questions, so come prepared.

‘What are the biggest men’s trends for the Summer? My hair is in a floppy, style just past my ears not sure whether to go for a crop or to grow it out. I need a change I know that as it’s been the same for years.’

Men’s hair is beginning to move into more refined styles— both on shorter and longer lengths. If you have texture or a curl to your hair, then embrace this at the front using some curl products to add definition. This style has shorter side panels, keeping the length on top. However, if holding on to the length is more your thing then something such as the Wolf cut could be a good option. It’s a popular trend this season and adds texture to the hair.

We consider various factors when advising a cut, such as face shape, bone structure, hair texture and lifestyle, so I suggest that you visit the salon where we would be happy to go through everything with you. Our consultations are complimentary so if you call 01737 924800 or email esher@ hareandbone.co.uk our front-of-house team can arrange a time that works for you. It sounds like you’re ready for a change and we’d be happy to help figure out exactly what that is. And if you decide to grow it out, you still need to ensure it’s tidy.

If you have any other questions, please drop Surrey Rocks an email on info@rocksmag.com or visit our Esher salon at 7 High Street, KT10 9RL where myself and the team are always happy to help answer any questions. You can also follow us on social at @hareandbone for the latest news from the team.

SELF CARE

What a busy month has just flown by! I kick started self care March by attending a soiree hosted by The Soni Clinic at BodySpace in Knightsbridge. If you don’t know then Bodyspace is a bespoke private wellness club which provides ongoing health, fitness and nutrition support for a select few private members. After having visited, I can say that it is a truly ultra luxurious, unique space with no expenses spared and now the chic home to Dr Soni’s London clinic. Dr Soni is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon specialising in non-surgical and surgical aesthetic procedures. I have no

qualms in sharing the fact that I go to him for bi-annual baby botox. You will have heard me say this before, but I wouldn’t go to anyone else. Given his highly specialised background and understanding of facial anatomy, who else could you trust with your face?! I, of course,

finished the evening of the event by having the truffle pasta at Harry’s Dolce Vita. It would have been rude not to since it was a 2 minute walk away.

NAILING IT

Whilst on the topic of self-care, name a better feeling than freshly manicured nails?!

I was absolutely delighted to be invited to the new Townhouse Guildford for a bespoke manicure. (I love my job!). Guildford is somewhere I don’t often go but I actually forgot how

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 79

good it is. I had planned to check out the clothes shops such as Zara, but unintentionally got stuck in OKA for 2 hours drooling over the interiors and doing some damage on the AMEX. Townhouse is situated in the very stylish Tunsgate Quarter area of Guildford. It’s a small and cosy salon and the scandistyle minimalist interiors are on point. My manicure was one of the most thorough I have ever had. The cuticle work was so tidy and my nails were painted to perfection. It was almost as if the paint at the bottom of my nail had seamlessness blended into my fingers. A week later and they are still looking perfect so they will hopefully last me for the entirety of my holiday. I have a feeling that I will have to make this my new regular. I’m sold!

PHOTOSHOOT READY

I also had the pleasure of being invited for a photoshoot with ‘Mum, Dad and Me Photography’ at their beautiful studio in Leatherhead. I have to say I am rather fussy with photoshoots and will only go to ones that I feel get the images right.

Nothing too cheesy and heavily edited but equally not too raw. Tamara got it spot on with a mixture of natural shots and some fun poses with perfectly placed lighting. Tamara was an absolute pleasure to work with and both myself and the children had a great time. We had two different backdrops set up super efficiently in 20 minutes!

I am so pleased with how the images turned out. I immediately sent them to all the family who all have them as their background on their phones!

Mum, Dad and me Photography are offering mini Easter sessions for £75. There is limited availability so hurry!

PUT THE SPRING

Make no mistake, the newness of Spring can make it the ideal time to start a relationship.

The clocks have changed, the evenings are lighter and the flowers are blooming. It’s easier to enjoy relaxed dates outside like lovely picnics, walks in nature and beach trips as the Winter weather is far behind us (we hope )

GET FOCUSED

Whatever your relationship status, now is the time to write down your goals for the next 6 months. Focus on what you want to achieve, what you want to change and who you want to be at the end of the 6 months.

Being clear about who you are and what you like sets you above the masses especially in terms of dating or having a long-term relationship.

Most people coast along in life. Have the same routine, eat the same foods, go to the same places and don’t ever really take any time to reflect or heal. To be an effective partner in a healthy relationship

SPRING IN YOUR ‘DATING’ STEP

it’s important to be able to reflect and take responsibility for your actions and feelings, set boundaries and be able to hold them and explain them properly.

Writing down lists and goals really helps you whittle down and get focused on exactly what you want and need. You wouldn’t go food shopping without a list and your dating / relationships should be the same. The time you spend planning and preparing makes for a much easier time.

Writing things down (or journaling as it’s now fashionably known by) also helps let go. Reflecting on past relationships can be healthy but not obsessing about them is important. You can’t change the past. You can only reflect, learn and move forward. Humans are supposed to mess up, make mistakes and not be perfect. But what we can do is learn, grow and change

for the better.

Make this the year you forgive yourself for past mistakes and get focused on the future.

MOVING IN POSITIVE DIRECTIONS

Here are my top tips to help you get where you need this Spring. Please write these down at least 7 solid days in a row, 30 days ideally.

• If Single - write down a list of 5 physical/emotional attributes your perfect partner will have (they have to be different each day)

• If in a Relationship - write down 5 things you like about your partner (they have to be different each day)

Commit to this and I guarantee in 7 days you will feel differently and in 30 days you will watch the magic happen.

I hope the next month is filled with blessings and abundance mixed with lots of yummy Easter eggs.

Could Second

There is no denying it; charity shops are becoming increasingly popular as we seek out more sustainable fashion options; and with our growing awareness of the impact fast fashion has upon the environment, secondhand shopping could be the perfect way to enjoy a guilt-free splurge.

The Facts

“15 million items of used clothes arrive in Ghana every week from Europe, America, and China and fast fashion items make up more and more of what is sent. 40% of the clothing shipped to Ghana never finds a second life and ends up in Ghana’s overflowing landfills which has created an environmental nightmare.” [BBC NEWS/independent.com ] With such shocking statistics, it is no wonder so many of us are

Second Be Best?

looking for ways to treat ourselves without further adding to the devastation. With high street, vintage and designer pieces sat side by side on the rails of charity shops up and down the country, they are a treasure trove. Here are a few things to remember when beginning your secondhand hunt:

Items are always hygienically steamed prior to going out on the shop floor to be sold.

Clothes found on the rails have been checked over by volunteers before being allowed out. Whilst the occasional hole or stain might be found, overall the quality of these items are good.

Charity shops are limited by the donations given to them, so it is worth travelling to more affluent towns or checking out shop reviews on Google before heading out for a shopping trip.

And remember: You are not the charity. They are. And by shopping charity shops, you are doing a good thing whilst also

grabbing a bargain.

For anyone not yet ready to head to the local thrift store, there are plenty of other ways to choose-used. Let’s take a look at 4 of the best:

1 Apps And Sites

On apps like Vinted and Depop, as well as on sites such as Ebay you can often find items in better condition than in the charity shops. This is often because people are usually selling for personal profit and as such, ensure only their best pieces go up.

Other times you can find absolute bargains after someone has a wardrobe clear out and wants a quick sale.

Overall, these kinds of apps are a fantastic way to enjoy the hunt of secondhand shopping without leaving the comfort of your couch. You can also search for certain sizes, colours or styles making it far easier to shop secondhand.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 85

Extra Upside: you have in-app buyer protection if an item gets lost in the post.

2 Private Online Sellers

Although shopping via dedicated apps gives you consumer protection, you can also find sellers you like, trust and use regularly via Instagram and Facebook groups. This is a fantastic way to source items which are harder to find in physical stores or more generic selling sites such as vintage and plus size clothing.

Before buying from someone for the first time outside of an app, be sure to ask them about their postage options to ensure you are covered if the item goes missing. Also check for any reviews to make sure they are legitimate.

Extra Upside: shopping locally via Facebook market place will often mean you don’t have to pay for postage as you can pick up from the seller directly.

3 Private In-store Sellers

Secondhand boutiques are growing in popularity. They only offer carefully selected, preloved items from private sellers who take half the profit whilst the store takes the other. This type of secondhand shopping is perfect if you prefer to try clothes on before buying, plus you can avoid paying postage by shopping in store.

Extra Upside: whilst the prices may be a little higher than purchasing from a charity shop or direct from an online seller, the items, often designer, are usually of a higher quality.

4 Renting

If you don’t yet wish to commit to buying secondhand, then why not take a step into the world of preloved by renting pieces first? From high-street to high-end designers, renting clothing is one of the best ways to explore your own style without spending money on items you may never wear again.

Extra Upside: purchasing designer clothing, even secondhand, can still run into the thousands of pounds. Renting the items you like is not only a more sustainable option for the planet but it is also a fantastic way to wear designer pieces without the hefty price tag.

The Facts

“Extending the life of clothes by just nine extra months of active use can reduce it’s carbon footprint by up to 30% “ Wrap.org Shopping secondhand, whether in store or online, has had a bad reputation for a long time, but with a revitalised interest, people from all walks of life are donating and selling great quality items. Sourcing clothing and accessories at a much lower cost than buying new can become a real joy, and the thrifting community is a wonderfully inspiring, informative and diverse place to be.

Try Second For Yourself

April is international Earth Month and it’s an opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for change around the issues most impacting our planet. This April, why not take part and make a small change by donating to and shopping at a charity shop? You might just find you love it!

Sadie Pizzey

Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. SP Interiors works on both residential and commercial projects and has recently been shortlisted for The International Design and Architecture Awards. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”.

TEN STEPS TO A SUCESSFUL

If you decide to renovate your home on your own, then the success of your project is down to your organisation and discipline. It is naive to think you can find a builder and hand the whole the project over to them. Indecision and a lack of design direction will lead to huge mistakes being made and you being very disappointed in the end result. It is the age old rule, for something to be a success you either need to invest time (ie yours) or money (ie pay for a design expert). Here are ten vital steps to follow to prevent your project from spiralling in time and cost and to creating a home that is of the highest quality and finish.

CONCEPTUAL IMAGES

Most homeowners before starting a project do design research online to find inspiration for how they want their home to look and feel. This is vital, how else will you know what styles, colours and finishes you are drawn to. The challenge comes when you become overwhelmed and are drawn to lots of different designs. The skill you need for this step is to refine your selections to one style that you love but also suits your property. Then collate images that reflect this final design choice and put them together on one page for each room. For example, once you see everything you want to include in your kitchen, you will then know if it looks right together and this helps you refine the design. You should end up with a page of images for each room in your home that you are renovating.

LAYOUT PLANS

www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com

If this is a large project, then chances are you are using an architect. In which case they will survey your property and produce drawings and layouts for your proposed home. It is important to point out that most architects are designing your home as a space. They do not focus on the details of the interior layouts, so this will need to be done by you. Regardless of whether you have some drawings to work from or not, interior layouts are so important. It effects kitchen layouts, furniture layouts, joinery, flooring, wall finishes, switches and socket positions, how much furniture you

HOME & INTERIORS

SUCESSFUL HOME RENOVATION

will be buying, etc. If you invest the time now in making these decisions, it provides you with all the information needed for the build details and your budget. There are many online tools to help you create your own plans, but if this is overwhelming then use graph paper and draw by hand. Yes, it takes time, but when your builder is asking how many sockets you want and where to put them, you will be thanking me!

DESIGN DETAILS

Once you have finalised the layout drawings for each room, the design details follow. What are the design details? This is everything that effect the SID (Structural Interior Design). This will vary, depending on the scale of your project. If this is a full renovation, then this includes: lighting & electrical placements (where do you want you lights, switches & sockets to go), heating changes (ie radiator placements and locations for underfloor heating) some images or if possible sketches of any joinery (bookcases, wardrobes, panelling etc), decisions on flooring (particularly sizes and depths), wall finishes (ie paint, wallpaper etc), windows & door changes or anything else that is being fitted into your home. Add it onto your layouts, put together a powerpoint with everything altogether, so you can hand it to your builder and they have everything all in one place. Is this a lot of work? Definitely,

but this is all helping you put together a detailed scope of work for your contractors to quote from, so that costs don’t escalate and mistakes aren’t made.

DETAILS FOR CONTRACTORS

If you really take the time on the above steps, then this is a fairly simple step. Details for contractors, gives you the control over how all your contractors quotes are laid out. We have all received quotes in the past where there is a big number and then some vague explanation of what this quote is covering. It is confusing, but more worryingly means you can miss what is and isn’t included. When you ask a contractor to quote, create a tender request which lists the requirements of the job and all the work they will be responsible for. Create a list of what building supplies you will be supplying, for example flooring, tiles, wallpaper etc and then list out all the areas of the job they will be responsible for supplying both labour and materials. Then finally outline how you want them to provide their quote. Requesting they breakdown each section into labour and materials, then a list of supplies and materials that are not included, any areas of the job that aren’t included in the quote and finally a start date and timeline for the work.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 89

EMPLOYING CONTRACTORS

The contractors that work on your home will make or break your project. Therefore making sure you employ the right person is key. These are my top three requirements when i’m working with a new contractor!

Number one: What is the quality of their work like? Ask for references and visit one of their recent projects to look at the quality of their work, particularly the finishes.

Number two: How are they as communicators? When you initially contact them how long does it take them to reply and also to provide a quote? My contractors must respond to any phone calls on the same day and respond to emails within 24 hours. Work on site can be time critical and if I can’t communicate to solve a problem quickly, it has an impact on the project.

Number three: How are they going to schedule the build? My principle contractor must provide a build schedule before work commences and let me know of changes each week. Do your homework and also make sure you like them and you have good rapor, you will be working together for a long time - so it’s vital you get on!

Your principle contractor should subcontract most of the other trades needed for your project, but there will still be some other contractors to find. Here are some potential other trades needed for your project: kitchen company/joiner, specialist decorator, tiler, window treatment specialist, audio specialist etc. Decide these contractors now for two reasons; you will have all your information for your budget and you can get them booked in before they get booked up!

COSTS

Once you have, reviewed all the quotes, now is the time to put all those scary costs together. Spreadsheets from now on are your friend. Start by building your contractors quotes and scheduling in their payment structure into your first spreadsheet. Don’t forget to add a 20% contingency, things will come up and go wrong, it’s the law of building! The next spreadsheet is for the SID costs, this is everything from flooring, to lightings, to switches and sockets, to appliances and the list goes on. Imagine if you turned your home upside down, everything that doesn’t

fall is what needs to be in this spreadsheet! Then finally the f, f & e spreadsheet! All the pretty things! If your budget is tight it might be that this spreadsheet covers items that will be bought slowly over time. At least by collating it altogether you know what you are aiming for. The huge benefit of completing this step now is you have all the costs before you even start. This means you can make changes and adapt the project if needed before you start and become financially tied in.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Even with a principle contractor running the project, there will be orders and other trades to schedule in. Ask for a weekly update on the build schedule and sight visit weekly if you are living away. Keep everyone else in the loop of the changes, communication is key!

SCHEDULING ORDERS

This works hand in hand with the above step. This also requires a further spreadsheet! Create an orders spreadsheet which details the product, quantity, cost, date to order and status of everything that you are responsible for ordering in your home. Update it constantly and you will be in control of all the orders required for each stage.

HOME & INTERIORS SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 20 90

SNAGS

This usually comes towards the end of the project, but if you can be on top of it from second fix onwards, then it means issues get fixed as they move along. I have a great app I use for this where I photograph the area that needs improving and add notes that sends directly to the contractor. Make sure you check your snag list on the next visit to check each area has been put right.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Finally the day has come that the builders go and you are left to style it altogether. Put aside a few days to clean all the dust, unpack and style the furniture, put out all your belongings and then make a list of any areas that need further furniture or accessories to make the space complete. Remember our homes are constantly evolving and changing as we travel, adapt and find different pieces we connect with. We are not aiming for perfection, just inspiration.

Your APRIL Astrology Forecast from Pia Louisa April 2023

Aries

21 MAR – 20 APR

Have you allowed yourself time to recover, Aries? March has had its difficult moments, however, there are brighter times on the horizon. Take some time to rest in the upcoming weeks and regain your energy. When it comes to your emotions, childhood memories seem to be coming up to the surface. A change within your family has brought up lots of thoughts from the past. Make space for them, but don’t be burdened by them. Finally, you have a message you wish to share with the world deep within your heart. Your creative abilities are consciously being used to make the world a better place. You have an active imagination, and an appreciation for the beautiful things in life.

Taurus

21 APR – 20 MAY

Look around Taurus and feel your heart overflowing with love and appreciation for everything you have created in your life. Emotional fulfilment, joy, and contentment are all major themes for your April. You are content in all aspects of life, including work, relationships, and well-being. Your spontaneity is running wild, leading you to make some unlikely decisions. This is going to serve you well, as it will lead to brand new experiences. Don’t overthink, just do! Finally, whether you’re a parent or not, you are a natural nurturer. At home, you look after others by cooking, cleaning, and giving cuddles to those who need it. On the other hand, you are also business minded and make great contributions to your work.

Hot Stars!

Gemini

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

Check in on your energy levels right now Gemini. You may be tired, especially if you have been taking care of other people or working hard to achieve a goal. Restore your energy levels by resting and withdrawing for a period. April may bring along some anxieties, as it seems you haven’t taken enough time for yourself lately. Allow the emotions to wash over you, then let them go as soon as you’re ready. Don’t fight your emotions, they’re there to tell you something important. Finally, don’t turn your back on your plans. You made a commitment to that part of your life, and it was for a reason. Leaving your comfort zone to start this new chapter was tough, but the rewards will soon be seen.

Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

Family is the most important part of your life Cancerian. They are your support system and the people you turn to when life gets difficult. As a water sign, your loyalty to your family is second to none, so take some time this month to show them how much you appreciate them. Furthermore, negative self-talk is leading you to doubt yourself. Remember – you are amazing just as you are. If you can’t love yourself for who you are, then who will? Finally, towards the end of the month, you will start a time of transition, leaving behind what is familiar and moving towards the unknown. Whether you’re moving house, leaving a relationship, or just going through a mental shift, know that this is necessary and meant to be.

Leo

24 JULY – 23 AUG

It seems many opportunities are coming your way, Leo; however, you’re refusing to see any of them through. Right now, you are in an idea phase, and unable to put any plans into action. Focus on the one thing that will help you move forward and try not to get side-tracked by any other ideas that pop into your head. Stalling is a trait you need to work on in April, as putting off till tomorrow isn’t going to help you in any way. Get what needs to be done finished and allow yourself to relax afterwards. Procrastination isn’t your friend, Leo. Make sure not to get overwhelmed though. Yes, there are things that must get done, but there will also be time to have fun. Life is all about balance.

Virgo

24 AUG – SEPT 3

What goes around comes around, Virgo. Be kind and loving to others, and they will be kind and loving to you. If you’re nasty and mean, then that will come right back to you as well. A big change is going to arise in April, and it’s likely to involve other people in your life. This is why having a good attitude is so important. Treat everyone how you would like to be treated, as you never know what they may bring you in return. Finally, it’s very normal to get frustrated when things aren’t working out the way you planned. Trust that life is moving at the right pace, and things will get to you when they’re meant to. Changes occur when you least expect them…

Libra

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

Intuitive messages are coming to you Libra. These are signs to look within and do what truly makes you happy. Your heart is telling you what you really want, listen to it, as it’s never wrong. Your intuition is your greatest strength and is what will guide you in the right direction. This is a very powerful month for you Libra, full of curiosity and love. The most important thing to remember is to trust yourself and make your own decisions without other people’s opinions getting in the way. Finally, manifesting your future is going to get you far. Now isn’t the time to be hasty. Look deep within your soul and think about what you want your notso-distant future to look like.

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

You are a master of your craft Scorpio, and now is the time to believe in yourself a little bit more. No one can do your job better than you. Get stuck in and show everyone who’s the boss! Moving on, have you been giving yourself enough self-love lately? You can’t expect anyone else to love you if you can’t do it yourself. Take time this month to appreciate the wonderfulness that is you. Finally, now is the right time to walk away from a situation that is no longer serving you. It can be scary, but if you don’t do it now, then you never will. Put yourself first and move on from this toxicity. By the end of April, you will be so proud of all you have achieved.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

Direct communication is what you need to succeed, Sagittarius. Playing games isn’t going to help anyone. Tell people what you want and let them know you appreciate the same in return. Furthermore, it seems you have been ignoring your calling lately. You know what you want your life to look at, and although there’s lots going on at the moment, doing what you love will help connect you with your soul again. Get back to who you once were. Finally, perseverance is the word to remember. You’re not going to succeed straight away and will need a few goes in order to get it right. Keep going, as with each step you’re getting closer. Tell people who you are and what you want, but don’t forget to tell yourself as well.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

You’re not quite sure what the next few months are going to bring, Capricorn. This is why jumping headfirst into this new situation is what’s best for you. Yes, chaos may await, but what if everything you have ever hoped for is just around the corner? With all this change about to occur, listening to your inner guidance is what will calm you down. Don’t do anything just because other people are telling you to. It’s your life; listen to what your soul wants. You have a quiet power about you, which sometimes makes people underestimate your abilities. You’re not exactly the loudest person in the room, but you don’t have to be in order to be seen. You have a magical way that draws people to you.

Aquarius

21 JAN – 19 FEB

Conflict seems to be following you lately, Aquarius. Whether it’s at home, work, or within your friendship group, it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. Try your best to resolve this conflict, mainly because it’s not a nice atmosphere for you to be around. Right now, you are all talk and no action, which can be great when planning a new venture, but you are ready for something more. You have great ideas, so remember to show the world who you are and what you stand for. Actions speak louder than words. Finally, you will have many choices to make towards the end of April. Only you can choose what is best for you. Be grateful you have so many opportunities.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20 MAR

Now is the time to re-evaluate your life, Pisces. Take a moment to work out if you are on the right track. If there are parts of your life you have outgrown, don’t be afraid to move on from them. Furthermore, make sure to not get too obsessed with wealth and status. Obviously, it’s good to have financial security and to be appreciated for your work, but there is so much more to life. Image isn’t everything. Finally, align yourself with your values and beliefs. If you don’t know what your core values are, make a list. Once you know what you stand for, you can start to live your life accordingly. April is the month for you to make a change and live up to your highest good.

Webbers Waste FEATURES

Iwould like to introduce myself and my company. My name is Natalie Webber and I founded Webbers Waste 3 years ago. Webber’s waste is a waste management company, collecting and disposing of waste in Surrey and South East London. Webbers Waste offers a trusted, well priced and environmentally conscious service has helped us grow hugely – we have recently become limited and have a number of vans, meaning, most importantly – we never let the customer down.

We are based in Epsom and cover most areas within Surrey, operating a ‘wait and load’ service with our 14-yard vans – meaning no skip permits and more importantly cheaper than a skip! Our vans operate with a 2-person

team and 1 hour’s free labour included - we do the hard work, so you don’t have to.

We are fully licenced by the environmental agency and all customers are provided with a waste transfer note, so you know your waste has been ethically disposed of. We have public liability cover of £5,000,000 and all staff are DBS checked – so you can rest assured you or your clients waste is in good hands.

Fortunately, our outstanding reputation has helped us gather a loyal commercial and domestic client base. We work with Estate Agents, Building Companies, Community Housing Projects, Shops and Offices. We specialise in house clearances, working closely with people who often need a sympathetic hand in difficult times.

NATALIE’S STORY

I have been a single mum since my son was 2 years old. It was tough but I got by. I worked in a local nursery but the pay was very low. I was on benefits to help me top up my wages so I could afford my rent and other bills. In 2020 I got made redundant along with all the other girls that worked there. I frantically started looking for another job. I applied for the London Fire Brigade. Over the next year I passed the fitness and a number of other tests and interviews. Just as I was to start my 13 weeks training lockdown hit! After some hard thinking and the realisation that I needed a live in nanny I decided not to go ahead with my career as a firefighter. I couldn’t leave my little boy.

After a few sleepless nights passed I hatched a plan. I couldn’t live on benefits forever, I needed to do something! I decided to use my life savings to buy a van!

I actually started to advertise on social media for waste clearance before I’d even purchased the vehicle. I totally believed in myself, I knew my life was about to change for the better!

I became financially independent instantly. I called HMRC immediately to tell them I no longer needed to receive benefits. They said they don’t receive many calls like mine!

After 2 and a half years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears - I have built up a reputable company collecting waste in the local area. Starting up as female in a predominately male industry has had its challenges as this male dominated industry comes with the occasional sexist comments, however, they are corrected quickly enough! I absolutely love my job, everyday is different. We find some great stuff, strange stuff, and recycle where we can.
