everyone’s talking about... J-LO AND BEN AFFLECK TIE THE KNOT

Jennifer Lopez, 52, and Ben Affleck, 49, walked down the aisle at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas shortly before midnight on Saturday July 16th. The couple, who have been engaged since April this year, then flew to Paris to celebrate their honeymoon. “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient….Last night, we flew to Vegas, stood in line for a license with four other couples, all making the same journey to the wedding capital of the world,” Lopez wrote to her fans in her ‘On the JLo’ newsletter on July 17th. “Behind us two men held hands and held each other,” Lopez continued. “In front of us, a young couple who made the 3 hour drive from Victorville on their daughter’s second birthday, all of us wanting the same thing, for the world to recognize us as partners and to declare our love to the world through the ancient and nearly universal symbol of marriage.” Ryan Wolfe, the lead pastor at Grace Christian Center of Las Vegas, said the couple had “their own vows that they wanted to share with one another” during the ceremony and reports say the couple looked very much in love. Ben and J-Lo first started dating back in 2002 when they met on the set of film ‘Gigi’, they postponed their wedding set for September 2003 and officially split up in January 2004. After both remarrying other partners and having children, the couple got back together last July.

NEWS LAUREN’S BABY HEARTACHE Former TOWIE star Lauren Goodger has shared her heartbreak with fans as she copes with losing her newborn daughter Lorena, who died tragically last month a few minutes after being born. While trying for an at home water birth for her second child Lauren, 35, whose waters broke on July 6th, was advised to remain at home. During routine checks 2 days later, her midwife Tamzin could not detect a heartbeat and Lauren was rushed to hospital. She delivered the baby Lorena who was said to have a low heartbeat. Minutes after the birth, doctors rushed in to give chest compressions and adrenaline. But sadly it was too late. “They think her oxygen may have been restricted because she had two knots in her cord but normally babies can still get enough oxygen despite this,” Lauren explained.

ALICE FUMING AT IOAN

“This has been the most traumatic experience of my life. Since Lorena passed away, I have had so many messages from other women who have gone through this too. I want to talk about her death to help other parents out there going through this. I want them to know they aren’t alone.” Lauren put on a brave face for eldest daughter Larose’s first birthday a week later. She asked the press to respect her privacy and is requesting an autopsy to discover the exact cause of death.

PADDY & CHRISTINE SPLIT ‘Top Gear’ presenter Paddy McGuiness and wife Christine have announced their separation after 11 years of marriage and 14 years together. In a joint statement, the couple said: “A while ago we took the difficult decision to separate but our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children. This was not an easy decision to make but we’re moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children. We’ll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together.” As the news came out it was made aware that the stress of

Actress Alice Evans has accused her ex-husband Ioan Gruffudd of lying to their kids in an attempt to ruin her, amid a bitter LA custody battle. Evans began her social media rant last week saying: “You see - I have no money. I gave up my career because I wanted the love of my life to have an amazing career and that leaves him being away most of the time. And I gritted my teeth and I got through it. I missed working oh hell I missed working but I didn’t want a day to go by without seeing my two incredible girls.” The star went on to claim that her ex was trying to ‘ruin’ her name, stating: “Ask my kids. Ask anybody that knows us. Being called a ‘bad parent’ when I gave up everything for them and don’t sleep at night in case and worry about how to feed them, check their health, take them to the dentist….those of you who might think ‘well why is she CONTINUING to post on Instagram when his lawyers are going to take her down for it? But think about it. He is spending money that should have gone to the girls education, sports, college, on using a lawyer to gag me.” Alice posted text messages from her daughter begging to stay at her current private school to back up her claims. Alice and Ioan wed back in 2007 after meeting on the set of ‘102 Dalmations’ and have two children together, Ella and Elsie. Ioan, 48, filed for divorce back in March last year after moving on from Alice with a younger actress, Bianca, 30. Alice accused Ioan of having a three-year affair with Bianca, following the couple’s acrimonious 2021 split. Alice took to Twitter after the break-up to say: “So it turns out that my husband, after two years of telling me I’m a bad person and I’m not exciting and he no longer wants to have sex with me and he just wants to be on set abroad… has been in a relationship for three years behind all our backs. Good luck, Bianca.” This isn’t going to end well we think!

ROONEY WINS LIBEL CASE having t h r e e children with autism was a major factor in the break-up. Christine was diagnosed with having the condition in 2021 after routine tests on both parents, and McGuiness said it was “something he’d always known.” The couple’s twins Leo and Penelope and daughter Felicity also have the condition.

Coleen Rooney has emerged victorious in her libel case against Rebekah Vardy who was found to have leaked personal stories of the wag to the Sun newspaper. The case dubbed ‘Wagatha Christie’ finally came to an end on Friday July 29th when the High Court Judge, Mrs Justice Steyn, ruled in Rooney’s favour. Her 75-page ruling described Vardy’s evidence as “inconsistent” and “implausible” and she believed Vardy and her agent Caroline Watt were likely to have destroyed potentially damning evidence. Vardy, wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, has been left to pay the significant legal cost of the trial which could turn out to be millions.

In a large skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil. Add the onions and peppers, and season with salt and pepper to taste. 2. Cook until onions are transluscent and peppers are tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from skillet and reserve.

3. Add remaining vegetable oil and let heat for about 30 seconds, then add skirt steak to pan. Squeeze lime over steak and season with cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper. 4. Let them sit for a minute or so to get a nice sear, then cook to your preference, about another 5 minutes for medium well-done steak. Remove from skillet. 5. Build bowls: start with about 1 cup rice per bowl. Top with steak, onions and peppers, avocado, black beans and corn. 6. Garnish with cilantro and drizzle with sour cream. Serve.

WINE MATCH A Coronita (Corona and lime) or Margarita are traditionally associated with Mexican foods and certainly go down a treat with spicy dishers! However, when looking to pair wine with Mexican foods such as these Steak Fajita Bowls we would highly recommend a Cabernet Sauvignon which maintains the fruit without the harsh tannins, making it a great choice for flavourful Mexican dishes. Rich dark berry fruit with spice, herbs, and sweet toasty oak, Cabernet has lush fruit, yet balanced texture to integrate with the meaty, spicy, vegetable flavours. Alternatively, a Malbec is similarly bold and has strong fruit notes which would work exceptionally well with a dish like this.

ALBUM REVIEW

RENAISSANCE Beyoncé is back! After a six-year hiatus, the ‘Crazy in Love’ singer is dropping her seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ on July 29th. Her last album ‘Lemonade’ was back in 2016 and while her break has seen her raise her kids, create a fashion label with Ivy Park and work on her music streaming business Tidal with husband Jay-Z, Beyoncé has admitted this album has been very special to make: “Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world (re: lockdown). It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving. My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration. I hope you find joy in this music.” Expect classic Beyoncé club beats and songs that are going to make you want to “wiggle” and be “sexy & strong” as Beyoncé herself puts it. In a recent British Vogue article, Edward Enninful describes having the album played to him (one of only a handful who has been privileged to hear her latest beats). “Instantly, a wall of sound hits me. Soaring vocals and fierce beats combine and in a split second I’m transported back to the clubs of my youth. I want to get up and start throwing moves. It’s music I love to my core, music that makes you rise, that turns your mind to cultures and subcultures, to our people past and present, music that will unite so many on the dance floor, music that touches your soul. As ever with Beyoncé, it is all about the intent.” Are you ready to have Beyoncé back in your living rooms, cars, bars and clubs – we certainly are!

BOOK REVIEW

CARRIE SOTO IS BACK Still missing the excitement of last month’s Wimbledon competition and want to really know what it must have been like for tennis supremo Serena Williams to stage her almighty comeback, then this book is a perfect Summer read for you. When the novel’s heroine, Carrie Soto, retired from tennis six years ago - she was considered the best player the world had ever seen, shattering every record imaginable. Now a hotshot, new, younger tennis star is threatening to break Carrie’s legacy. At 37, Carrie attempts to come back for one more epic season to defend her title, even if defying all the odds means she has to train with her ex-boyfriend. And she puts up with a lot in the process. All the sports media are saying they never liked “the Battle-Axe” anyway and her body isn’t moving as fast as it once did. It also means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to, Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever. So in spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season in this emotional story. A very powerful novel about the cost of greatness and one woman’s quest to achieve this against all odds. From the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones & The Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, this is an exciting, emotional and tantalising read, not just for tennis fans.

inger/songwriter Kris James has crossed a lot off his list aged 30, having two hit albums, a number 1 single on iTunes, a tour with Will Young, a clothing range, a 7-year boy band heritage and a new disco-funk single – making big waves - just out. Kris has been stunning audiences and rapidly growing a collective following like no other. An experienced and talented performer with songs that never fail to disappoint. Kris’ new single taken from his upcoming second album, ‘The Way You Move’ is infused with the most disco funk feel yet. It carries on with Kris’ ability to make every song ooze with bubbling danceability and feel-good energy. Loaded with groove, the pop melodies drive forward with dazzling vibrant colour. With a rejuvenated ‘80s sound, the track mixes disco and classic synth-pop to create a love anthem perfect for summer. ‘The Way You Move’ has been a hit with the media too with the Sunday Express saying the latest single is “full of self-assurance and maturity,” while online music site 1883 said they loved “Kris’ tracks because they always feel very personal and introspective.” Kris’ latest single was produced by multi-platinum producer and award-winning songwriter Sam Williams, who has worked with the likes of Supergrass, Plan B and Gaz Coombes. Through his own production company, Temple Sound Music, Sam has formed a legacy of creating record-breaking hits. He definitely has the Midas touch and ‘The Way You Move’ is no exception. ‘The Way You Move’ will be released on August 5th so expect it to be the soundtrack to your summer. Talking about the new single Kris states, “This time around I’ve been able to have some real fun in creating this song and the next album. This is the most disco-funk I think I have ever gone and I absolutely love it! Hope you do too!” Last year saw the release of Kris’ self-titled debut album, which made noise and turned heads, as it navigated

through the depths of first love. Kris always writes and performs from the heart. His first ever single ‘Anymore’ was released in 2018 and entered the official iTunes Chart at number 1 in the genre of electronic on the day of release. What an accolade! His third single ‘I’ll be Here’ peaked at number 19 in the official overall iTunes charts.

WHAT GOES ON TOUR... Kris will also be returning to our stages soon, as he joins up with original Pop Idol winner and International Pop Superstar Will Young on his upcoming commemorative 20 Years Tour. Opening on the 10th of October, the two-month tour will voyage all around the UK, visiting the likes of York’s Barbican, Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, Manchester’s O2 Apollo and London’s Palladium. Will Young said of his supporting act: “I’m so excited Kris James will be joining my 20 Years tour this October. I love supporting new artists and I’m sure the audiences are going to love him.” Kris is overjoyed about the tour too saying: “I’m super hyped for the Will tour, I smile when thinking about the fact that we are back on stage again! It’s been a long time coming and I can’t wait for people to hear the album and also the new music I’ve been working on”.

BOYBAND HERITAGE The Liverpool-born singer/songwriter, has an inspiring story to tell having been the lead singer for a boyband that cracked the US and almost made it in the UK. Kris was on the verge of launching his solo career aged 23, having been signed by Sandi Thom and her then partner American blues star Joe Bonamassa, when a friend told him about an opportunity to join boyband The Scheme who were looking for a replacement lead. “I went and it was amazing, I did seven years with The Scheme, travelling all over the world. We recorded an album in Minneapolis with the guy who did the Jonas Brothers stuff, we toured America and did loads of TV. “But then at the end of our last three-and-a-half-month tour there, we were in the airport lounge when the pianist said he’d met a girl and he was leaving the band. We never heard from him again, the label didn’t want to replace him and they released us from our contract.” Gutted was an understatement. So I was fired!! I went back to the label and asked if we could just do the song which I’d written which I knew was going to be a hit. They agreed, I rerecorded it and it went to 23 in the charts. From that I was able to do the album.”

SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Kris has just signed a brand-new deal with Fairwood Music Publishing (longstanding publishers of the likes of David Bowie) as a solo artist. On hearing the news earlier this year, Kris posted to his 26K Instagram fans: “So thankful and happy to say I’ve finally signed a publishing deal after all these years! Never give up on the dreams that you set out for, some day they will come true!” The true gent went on to thank his team for all their hard work. “It’s been a long long time coming but I’m happy and persistence is the key in this business. No matter what you do in life, I believe that if you carry on you’ll get where you want to be eventually, and my mum always said I was a late bloomer!” With a new album on the horizon, expect big things from Kris James. A recent LA visit has introduced the star to more dance and music opportunities. Besides his music endeavours, Kris is also the founder of Amanzzo, a new luxury, sustainable menswear brand that launched its debut collection of swimwear, produced using recycled and repurposed materials such as ECONYL. Kris aims ‘“to deliver luxury quality at affordable prices, and prioritise sustainability at every avenue, from production through to packaging and shipment without compromising on style or quality”. Look out for Celebrity Journalist Angela Sara West’s exclusive chat with Kris James in the October Issue.

eyoncé is releasing her new album ‘Renaissance’ on July 29th – after almost breaking the internet when she let slip to fans it was on the way! This will be the artist’s seventh studio album and comes after a long break; her last album ‘Lemonade’ was released back in 2016. Ryan Tedder who co-wrote her hit ‘Halo’ is back on board for this new album alongside Raphael Saadiq, who has crafted hits for Mary J Blige and John Legend, among others. Beyonce said of the new album, which shows her naked on a horse on the album artwork: “With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again. I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible. I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies. There’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!”

HUMBLE & HIGH EARNINGS Beyoncé is undoubtedly one of the world´s most talented musicians and a successful businesswoman in her own right. Her net worth is an estimated $500 million, making her one of the highest female celeb earners in the world. However, Bey’s humble attitude never fails to endear her to fans. She has quoted that her biggest goal in life is just to be happy: “I have a lot of property. I’ve invested my money and I don’t have to make anymore, because I’m set. I’m now able really to be free and just do things that make me happy.” Although happiness seems to be at the top of Beyoncé’s list, her 7-bedroom mansion in Beverly Hills and a range of luxury cars totalling up to $10 million, must help right?!

CONQUERING THE WORLD At only 40, Beyoncé has already built her empire and is tipped to stay at the top for the foreseeable future. Her previous album ‘Lemonade’ broke records selling a total of 617,000 copies in the first two weeks of being released. This even beat her album ‘B’day’ that sold 514,000 in the same time period. What’s most impressive is that it was a secret album release and Bey shocked fans by releasing the album exclusively via iTunes, without any pre-release announcements.

Beyoncé has also won her fair share of awards, including a total of 28 Grammy’s; the first when she was only 19 when she was part of Destiny’s Child. She has been named the most nominated woman in Grammy history!

JAY-Z & BEY

It is thought that if Beyoncé were to ever separate from Jay-Z the divorce would cost a total of $1 billion dollars, being the highest celebrity divorce in history. There has been an ongoing conspiracy that Jay-Z has been having an affair with his young protégée Rihanna back in 2008. Not only this but at the Met Gala in 2014 a feud between Bey’s sister Solange Knowles and her husband Jay-Z erupted where Solange had actually hit Jay-Z in an elevator. Solange accused her brother-in-law of getting too close for comfort to fashion designer, Rachel Roy. The pap’s captured this moment and even then, Beyoncé, typically maintained her complete professionalism and didn’t batter an eyelid at the paparazzi, instead she remained completely calm and unfazed despite her angered sis. Beyoncé is famously known for keeping her personal life private and I’m sure this public dispute was her worst nightmare, especially between two people so close to her. Despite rumours of feuds, Jay-Z and Beyoncé have been happily married for 14 years and have 3 beautiful children, Ivy Blue aged 10 and twins; Rumi and Sur aged 5. It is unclear whether the music duo are planning on expanding their brood but Jay-Z has been reported as saying he wants “a little basketball team” in the future

The latter iconic advertisement back seemed to fit well with Beyoncé’s feminist attitude, she quotes: “Diamonds often are a sign of a woman’s strength these days. Now women can buy their own diamonds.” This strong, female attitude is exactly what Beyoncé has always demonstrated especially through her music, such as ‘Irreplaceable’. Therefore, to feature in an ad where this is again reconciled, reminds us of Beyoncé’s ultimate goal to be successful in her own right. If the furore around the new album is anything to go by – Beyoncé will soar to even greater heights.

MAKING WAVES WITH TIDAL Jay Z and Beyoncé’s subscription-based music streaming service called Tidal combines lossless audio and high-definition music videos with curated editorial. A service, which claims to pay the highest royalties to the artists, it has over 90 million tracks and 450,000 music videos. Among the stars that co-own and support Tidal such as Nicki Minaj, Usher and Madonna it has caused outrage for some artists. 50 Cent explained: “We probably could have [done] something more exciting if they reached out because the people you saw there don’t even own the rights to their own music. So they can’t say it’s just going to come out on Tidal, it has to go everywhere. So why would you actually buy Tidal to get something that would be everywhere else.” Despite the feuds, Tidal has been a huge global success solely down to the big names involved. Jay Z and Beyoncé know what they’re doing and the die-hard fans out there will always supporting their musical idols. Plus, to so many the artists are the ones that should be rewarded for producing music not the sellers like iTunes and Spotify, which give a comparably small fee to artists from selling or streaming their music compared to Tidal.

SKIN

T

emperatures can easily reach 30 degrees in the UK (or 40 last month!) and this intense heat can play havoc with your skin. While Vitamin D you get from the sun’s rays is actually good for you (see below), harmful UV rays damage and dry out your skin. Plus excess sweating can cause spots to break out – just when you don’t need them. Therefore try to avoid wearing any make-up if you can in the daytime. Your skin is better with just a sunscreen and if you really need some sort of coverage keep it to a concealer and tinted moisturiser. Benefit Cosmetics does a great version with SPF15 called You Rebel (£30) suited to all skin types containing Aloe Vera, Vitamin A and Vitamin E, known for their replenishing properties. The best thing to keep fresh in the sun and prevent excess sweating is a brumitiser. Evian do a great 150ml travel sized canister so you can keep it in your handbag and mist whenever you want to keep cool and perspiration at bay. If you’re opting for a made-up look, go for a sheer foundation. Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Light Stay-in-Place Make-Up (£37) is a great lightweight foundation that controls oil, resists smudging and won’t melt off through heat and humidity. To prevent major make-up meltdown, MAC Fix+ (£17) is a fantastic product. This refreshing spray infused with calming properties including cucumber, chamomile and green tea not only deeply nourishes dehydrated skin. It also fixes any previously applied make-up. Just a few sprays later and your make-up will stay put all day long. Another great summer product to try is blotting sheets like Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets (£2.50). Blot, don’t wipe, away shine and grease without disrupting your make-up. AND THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT SUMMER SUN… While dermatologists and doctors have demonised the sun for years, it’s not as bad as you have been led to believe. Yes, it does cause skin damage and over exposure can lead to skin cancer. But the good news is, in small doses, sun has actually been scientifically proven to be good for you. In the last few years numerous studies have proven that Vitamin D (most of us get 90-95% of the necessary amount through the sun’s rays) may prevent 16 different types of cancer including prostate, breast, ovarian and colon. According to further European studies it also prevents diabetes, multiple sclerosis and boosts fertility & testosterone (baby-making is also more common in summer months – be warned!) Plus, we have all read at some point about Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD which is specifically caused by lack of sunlight. People with SAD tend to be more depressed and overweight. Higher levels of serotonin in our bodies not only makes you feel happier, it also suppresses the appetite, so you eat less in warmer weather. Bonus! But be warned, the recommended level of sun exposure required to ward off illness and ailments is only 30 minutes of exposure 4-5 times a week. And a sunscreen with a minimum Factor of 15 is also advised.

o keep eyes looking fresh and the white’s whiter (also perfect for blurry hangover eyes) use Optrex Eyedew Dazzling Eyedrops (£5). There’s a coloured version to bring out the blue in your eyes too. Waterproof mascara is another must. One of the best on the markets today is the classic Maybelline New York Great Lash Waterproof Mascara at a non-bank breaking £7, it provides voluminous lashes without clumps and smudging. Perfect for beach and pool days as this bad boy doesn’t shift even when diving in the pool. And to prevent eyeliner smudging, Mac’s Liquid Eye Liner (£20) is one of the longest wearing eyeliners so will not shift in the summer heat. Its firm tapered tip also makes application easy and precise, so if feline eyes are your thing, this is a must-have summer beauty product for you.

LIPS

I

t’s worth investing in a lip balm with sunscreen to apply on hot days as your lips age and cracks appear on the lip line due to over exposure in the sun. Nivea’s A Kiss of Protection Sun Protect Lip Care (£2.40) has an SPF of 30 and doesn’t feel cakey on lips like most lip balms with sunscreen do. This product has won the ‘Best of Beauty Award’ several years in a row. US brand Burt’s Bees (£4.60) is also fantastic for super softening your lips with 100% natural ingredients including sunflower oil and bees’ wax. The worldfamous brand now comes in 8 different flavours including coconut, blueberry and dark chocolate. Mwah! Most women are either lippy or lip gloss obsessed. To stop yours going gloopy in the sun always keep in the fridge for at least half an hour before application. This especially applies to lip liners as a smudged lip line is not a good look.

HAIR

K

eratin blow dries are incredibly popular for summer by smoothing and de-frizzing hair. This revolutionary treatment, formerly known as the Brazilian blow dry, naturally removes frizz from the hair without damaging it in any way. The results are amazing and last 2-5 months. As clients repeat the treatment, they quickly become aware of the improved quality of their hair. This treatment is extremely successful with lightened, blonde, highlighted and damaged hair, helping promote beauty, softness, flexibility, health and shine. Kerastase hair masks are among the best on the market. They replenish, smooth, repair and protect hair while preventing split ends. Quite a pricey product (£35-£40) so to make yours last longer apply the mask half-way down your head to the ends. It’s not always necessary to condition the new hair growth at the roots. For a cheaper alternative, try Revlon’s Uniq One Spray at only £9.50 from Revlon stockists. It detangles and repairs dry, damaged hair and controls frizz. Also as a leave-in product it can work its magic all day long. Moroccan Oil (£32 for 100ml) is also an amazing product for coarse, unruly or damaged hair - leaving hair feeling smooth and silky. It can double-up as a serum and is better than most on the market today. Use sparingly though to look gorgeous not greasy. Sun, chlorine and salt water can really dull coloured hair. To keep yours looking vibrant this summer apply a restorative mask once a week like Oribe Masque for Moisture & Control (£60) available at Nico Bouquet or Hare & Bone. Celeb fans include And for a try-at-home remedy do a cool water rinse after shampoo and conditioning and apply apple cider vinegar to keep colour at its best whilst also adding shine.

bout 30 minutes before going in the sun apply a spray with a UV heat protector. The sun dries out hair and UV damages so sprays work by coating individual hair shafts with a protective coating. Be sure to distribute spray evenly through hair with a brush or wide toothed comb. Scalps are also sensitive and prone to burning so always remember to apply your sun protection spray to your parting as well. For instant boho glam tie a headscarf around your hair. This way you don’t have to mess around with a hairdryer and you have the added bonus of having your hair protected from damaging UV rays. Blondes, if you’re planning on swimming, it’s always best to apply a conditioner or leave-in conditioner to showered hair before going in the pool. Chemical reactions of bleached hair with copper ions or chlorine in swimming pool water may put a green tinge into your blonde hair. By showering and applying conditioners before swimming you protect the hair shafts so none of the harmful chemicals can penetrate. Too late…. your hair has a nasty green tinge! No problem, buy an acidic ketchup from your local supermarket. A supermarket own brand is better than Heinz, leave on your hair for 15 minutes to strip the chemicals out. Can’t face ketchup then opt for a dissolvable paracetamol. Remember to eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables in the summer. The vitamins A and B help keep your hair strong and healthy. And finally a great tip from one of the world’s most gorgeous women, Blake Lively! The former ‘Gossip Girl’ star swears by sea water to get her beach ready waves. She simply scrunches salt water in her hair and twirls into a loose messy bun on the top of her head. When it has air dried, she unwraps and has beautiful flowing waves. Plus at no damage to her hair. Heat appliances and hours of styling in the hot Californian weather is unnecessary, Blake reveals.

adel players and fans turned out in force on Sunday 17th July to see the exhilarating 2022 Padel Club Championships at Ashtead Squash and Tennis Club. Despite the sweltering heat, reaching highs of 38 degrees, the action kicked off with the Ladies Doubles. Club marketing manager Rachael Burgess and her partner Ros Starkey put up a tough fight with some superb padel play, but it was Katie Jenkins and Vicki Arkinstall who won the Ladies trophy in the end - 6-0, 6-0. Next up in the Mixed Doubles, Elena Gamarra and

Javier Aldaz took victory over Rachael Burgess and Daniel West with a stellar first set 6-1, although it proved much more difficult in the second set with tough opposition from Burgess and West resulting in a nail-biting 7-5 win to Gamarra and Aldaz. The final match was the highly contested Men’s Doubles which saw twins Harry Plumb and Ben Plumb go head-tohead with Daniel West and Alan Rutland. The exciting match was very close and Rutland and West made the youthful twins work for their eventual 6-2, 6-4 victory.

oday it’s 38 degrees and we’re currently in the middle of a heatwave. When life is extra hot, hair is usually thrown in a topknot and left to its own devices. Unlike skincare, people often aren’t sure how to look after their hair in the sun. UV rays, dehydration, air con and travel can all impact on the health of your hair and can leave it feeling dry, or the humidity can intensify the frizz. I’m here to tell you that braids and e answer and that you can embrace and on holiday. y. To eliminate the impact heat can eed to begin packing moisture into un arrives. This can be in the form of such as Oribe Masque for Beautiful r-protecting UV filters, or, adding on

an intense moisture treatment when you’re in the salon. One that we highly recommend is the Renewal Remedies, also by Oribe. This is a much more intense treatment containing UV protection and can be made bespoke, depending on your hair type. However, if you’re keen to abolish the frizz completely then our Keratin Smoothing Treatment, which seals the hair cuticle with a coating of protein to eliminate frizz and adds softness and shine, is your summer friend. It reduces the time it takes to blow-dry hair, or the need to blow-dry at all, and depending on hair type, can last three to five months, if the supporting home haircare products are used, it’s the ultimate treat for your hair. On holiday, there are a few tricks you can do to prevent your hair becoming weak in the salt and chlorine water: 1. Rinse your hair before and after swimming. The natural water will fill any porous aspects of the cuticle before salt or chlorine water get the chance. 2. Invest in a UV spray for your hair and similar to skincare, apply regularly. 3. Wear a hat.

4. Reduce the use of heated appliances. This is where the Keratin Smoothing Treatment comes into play. It is also important that you protect you colour while in extreme weather and especially if spending more time in the pool. You can do this by investing in Goldwell’s Dualsenses Sun Reflects UV Spray. It instantly protects hair from the influences of sun, pool and seawater and from colour fading due to UV rays. It prevents moisture loss and rebalances the moisture level. There has been a shift in booking colour appointments for when a client returns from holiday. This allows us to professionally treat colour which has either faded in the sun or lightened if your hair is blonde. It might just take a toner to rejuvenate colour but by treating your hair with the same level of respect as your skincare regime, Summer and holidays shouldn’t cause any damage, and your hair can continue to be manageable (and on trend) during this time. When it comes to cutting hair, regular appointments encourages growth and good health. Booking in for a restyle or trim before holiday is a good idea but equally once you

return as this allows us to treat any damage to the ends. Please always remember though, prevention is better that cure. With this in mind, I highly recommend the Oribe Alchemy which builds hair from the inside out. It reinforces and strengthens fragile hair, hydrates strands and locks in moisture. If the scent of summer could be bottled as a haircare product, this would be it. The floral blend of daisy and honeysuckle extracts help to reveal hair’s supernatural strength. We are offering a free Hair Alchemy gift set with any two Oribe products purchased, while stocks last. Ask our London and Esher professionals for your own prescribed hair care products. I’ll be back next month with my insights from the world of hair but if you can’t wait until then, please visit our Esher salon at 7 High Street, KT10 9RL where myself and the team are always happy to talk about our favourite subject. THE TERRACE EATERY T

The food was impeccable and all their Deli-style sandwiches, wraps, salads, breakfasts, fruit salads, pancakes and smoothies are individually made in front of you, using only the finest and freshest local ingredients.

OUR EXPERIENCE On arrival we were warmly greeted by co-owner Jan and shown the impressive Terrace Eatery menu and fine selection of food and drinks on offer. With such a wide-ranging menu we were indeed spoiled for choice.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

You can enjoy 30 variations of their Deli-sandwiches, 15 delicious types of salads, 10 different homemade cakes, 25 breakfast options as well as the abundance of mixed fresh fruit, granolas and smoothies and coffees on offer all while sitting in their glorious oak beamed cafe with its historic and stunning exposed brickwork. Or, like us, you can choose to eat al fresco on the glorious outdoor terrace which has a further seating for 50 customers. We opted for a mixed platter consisting of whole baked aubergine stuffed with peppers, sun dried tomatoes and basil with a side of Moroccan couscous and a mixed vegetable medley containing broccoli, green beans and red onion. The

trio of dishes combined were delicious and the flavour of the spiced couscous perfectly offset the fresh and crunchy freshly-made vegetable salad. The aubergine was slow roasted to perfection too, brimming with flavour from the sundried vine tomatoes and the peppers were plentiful and so tasty. A huge thumbs up and a great choice for any vegan or vegetarian’s out there. Next up we decided to try the chicken escalope with crispy bacon, cucumber, tomato and salad with fresh mayo. It came on thick sliced, fresh, white bread (or you can choose brown). The chicken was really succulent and flavours worked with the mayo, crispy bacon and salad. Our third and final dish was smashed avocado on granary

toast topped with two poached eggs and garnished with chilli flakes and mustard seeds. Wow what a dish. The avocado was delicious so fresh and so much of it. And the poached eggs were cooked perfectly, with the large oozy yellow yolk pouring out after just one stab of the fork. To accompany we opted for an Iced Cappuccino (which had plenty of kick!) and kept us going for hours (Jan did pre-warn us!) and a freshly blended avocado and banana smoothie packed full of fruit and flavour – a delicious, refreshing and healthy drink. We were sold!

With a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old to entertain, I have jam packed our days with activities, play dates, sports camps, swimming camps, you name it! One of the most memorable activities we have done so far has been our stay at Port Lympne. You may remember I wrote about it in last years column when we stayed at Tiger Lodge. This year we booked Lion Lodge which was an even more incredible experience. The lodge itself is the most luxurious of all the accommodation at Port Lympne. It is an open plan, timber-clad, Manhatten loft-style building, with two bedrooms, a lounge area, kitchenette and chic bathroom complete

with Bamford products. Not to mention the huge gardens with stunning views of the Kentish coast. The lounge area and downstairs bedroom offers panoramic views of the lion’s habitat. We were lucky enough to occasionally spot the two beautiful African lions; Wilma and Zulu. They were not as frequent as the tigers last year, most likely because lions sleep for around 18 hours a day!

With this type of room, you also get access to your own golf buggy for the duration of the stay and a safari tour included. You can even drive around in the golf buggy after park closure hours which is lots of fun! My favourite feature of this room is the Scandinavian style outdoor bath which is built to overlook the lions and their habitat…a truly unique experience! Unfortunately, the lions did not join us during our bath time. I had to remind myself that they are animals after all and whether or not they decided to hang out near the bath was up to them. The thing I love about Port Lympne is that it is so different from a conventional zoo. It is a reserve, so they aim to breed, nurture and release many endangered species back into their natural habitat in protected reserves. By staying here you are essentially helping this to happen. For example, they have managed to release 70 gorillas back into the wild and have transferred 8 black rhinos back to Africa who have produced 25 offspring between them. This year we decided to do a

giraffe encounter which included a really informative talk, an off-road trip into the Kentish Savannah and feeding the giraffes from the jeep. This was one of the most incredible experiences ever! During these sorts of trips I am always wanting to take a million pictures but also conscious not to spend too much time on my phone. Having been so busy in the holidays and focusing on the children, I have been spending less time on Instagram which has actually been rather nice. The way Instagram is heading right now is more like Tik-Tok, full of reels and adverts that frankly I’m just not interested in. What happened to just seeing pictures of your friends?! Don’t get me wrong I’m all for looking at a bit of inspiration for fashion, interiors and recipes, but I’m just finding it all too staged and forced at the moment. As the algorithm started to change, I tried to fit in by creating a ‘get ready with me reel’ but then realised it just wasn’t me. I pride myself on keeping it real. I always said to myself that everything I post on Instagram is what I actually get up to and that wouldn’t change whether Instagram existed or not. So as Instagram is changing, I am going to make sure that I stick to doing what I do best and keeping it real, taking snaps and videos as I go with the flow, just like the animals at Port Lympne!

august Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what August will bring for you! Oracle Card

Oracle cards give a deeper insight and extra guidance to your Tarot reading. They help to interpret the cards differently and give the reading a general theme. Your oracle card for August is ‘Isolation’. By now I think we’re all pretty sick of the word isolation, however there are great reasons why being alone is beneficial for the soul. It can sometimes feel lonely when we’re isolated, but there is actually a healing aspect that comes from it. When you’re away from everyone, it gives you the chance to get to know yourself better and explore the parts of yourself that get hidden away when you are with people. Give August the chance to let you heal and rediscover yourself. This isn’t saying that August will be a month you spend entirely alone, you will just learn to enjoy your own company while exploring your identity.

Six of Pentacles

The tarot cards being shown for this month are all part of the Minor Arcana, meaning that August is likely to be a chilled month where you can sit back and reflect on times to come. Your main card for August is the Six of Pentacles. This card is all about striking the balance between giving and receiving. Share your wealth with other people, whether that be physical wealth or emotional, and trust that it is best not to keep everything to yourself. Your generosity is going to shine in August and will leave you lighting up the path behind you with your friends and family beaming with joy. Whether you are giving to a charity, or just spending time with the closest people in your life, remember the pleasures that come from giving and accepting.

Knight of Swords

The Knight of Swords shows your ambitious nature coming through in August which will help you achieve your last summer goals. You are actionorientated and want to get things done, rather than sit back and think about a plan. This card is a clear sign that you are being driven to succeed and want to make the most out of your time. The Six of Pentacles and Knight of Swords together show a strong need to take action when it comes to helping those around you. Your impulsiveness and generosity combined makes you extremely caring, although you may have to think about who the best people are to give back to.

Ace of Cups

The Ace of Cups is back this month, which means that there might be some unfinished business left over from July that you may need to continue working on. This unfinished business may have something to do with love, as the Ace of Cups is all about our relationships with others and how we love them. Take a close look at any new relationships in your life, as they may end up being very important and worthy of attention. New feelings about a situation are likely to come up in August, so make sure to listen to your body and check in with yourself regularly. By Pia Louisa

Mehs replace that scorching mojo which has powered you forward for these past few months, Aries. Don’t worry, it won’t last. After the 20th you feel that can-do confidence returning. However, guard against wanting to do everything yourself. Independence is one thing and burnout another. Others may well be delighted to help if you delegate. A new love opportunity could appear for singles but in your desire for excitement and romance, ensure you know what you are getting into especially around the 21st. Your best day for love, luck, travel and opportunity is the 18th August when everything just falls into place. You’ve all the right words – and the right moves from the 26th when it comes to partnerships.

You are usually the poster child for patience and your ability to rise above petty squabbles, Taurus. But it may seem like people are simply going out of their way to rile you or push your buttons. Or distracting you from what you need to be doing with demands of their own. As a result you may have difficulty keeping your cool at the start of the month. After the 23rd, expect a release from any tension and for things to flow much more smoothly as the energy lifts and you’re in the mood to dance again with life. The 9th is going to show you whether something still has a future or not while the 22nd offers an opportunity to negotiate something far better for yourself. If you and another have found yourselves at loggerheads, expect a win/win solution or to kiss and make up before the month is out.

126 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 12

Mars arrives in your sign this month and is set for a long-term stay, Gemini. Say hello to sexiness and goodbye to inertia and ambivalence. You will reject the so-so in favour of something better. You’re a firestarter when it comes to igniting those desires but do try to refrain from starting too many as you will end up pulled in all directions and end up with tepid results. Instead, focus on 2-3 major goals or areas and blaze a trail. Sadly or perhaps this is a good thing, you won’t tolerate procrastinators or anyone who promises but doesn’t deliver. The same goes for anyone who talks a good game but can’t bring it. If that lover takes too long to close escrow you’ll fast lose interest and move in another direction. Believe me, that scorching hot charisma won’t go unnoticed.

The start of August offers you delightfully unexpected encounters, interludes and surprises which mark the start of something good, Cancer. Whatever you do especially around the 3rd, don’t get too attached to plans. If something new and enticing appears and especially if it involves an invitation which gives you entrée into a new and different circle from your usual one, do take it. Especially around the time of the full Moon on the 12th. Venus remains in your sign right up until the second week when it sets off on a self-worth building mission for you with money or love being your main growth areas. Others shore up the progress they’ve made so far this year with career matters. The 18th offers you tangible rewards and recognition along with success-setting validation.

Ruler the Sun leaving your sign doesn’t mean the party is over, Leo. You have Venus keeping the after-party going from the 11th onwards and on into September. One of your best days of the year for personal goals and attainment occurs on the 18th when an opportunity, release or new experience presents itself like a last minute birthday gift. The 22nd asks that you don’t agree to or enter into anything that doesn’t feel quite right however. And don’t be afraid to state a few terms of your own going forward. Reach for the compromise or win/win situation. This month’s full Moon on the 12th shines on partnership matters while ruler the Sun boosts your self-worth after the 23rd. Another reason why you won’t agree to just anything, Leo. Just what you know is right for you.

Happy birthday, Virgo. Ruler Mercury arrives in your sign on the 4th ahead of the Sun on the 23rd. The time to initiate those plans for the coming year or simply launch that celebration is the 27th – the day of the new Moon in your sign. This is the time to set your goals for the upcoming year. It’s set to be one of the most successful and soul expanding yet. 2023 is set to open your horizons and remove any remaining restrictions for you. This is all about the new so a word of warning about your past. If it comes calling do think long and hard about opening the door and letting it back in. Do you want something better or simply more of the same? Going back over the past and what we’ve learned from it ensures history doesn’t repeat itself. It’s you that is renewed this month so don’t fall into the trap of accepting that regifted relationship.

Ruler Venus shines on both your social life and those goals this month. Usually this is all about the love of friends rather than the romantic kind but the 18th offers a ‘Cupid Goes Crazy’ moment thanks to Jupiter in your partnership sector. Don’t however feel you have to bow to peer pressure on the 22nd or go along with what others want to do when you simply don’t want to. Also look to whether or not you have been asked to put those goals on the back burner in favour of something else. How is that sitting with you? Mercury’s arrival in your sign on the 26th means you won’t mince your words and get straight to the point now. You’re also going to be going back and picking something up where you left off. And maybe realising you should never have let it go in the first place. Expect a revival by the time your birthday season comes round.

You’ll leave no one in doubt of your intentions or that you don’t mean what you say mid-month, Scorpio. Whatever you state you’re going to do, you follow through on it especially from the 12th14th. Anyone who doubts this really doesn’t know you that well. Partners may need your attention or feel neglected on some level so do ensure you don’t get so caught up in what you need to be doing, neglect them or you will be storing up trouble later in the month. Ensure you take care of love business before the 20th. Singles won’t have any patience for matches who seem to just want to message but don’t move things along. By the month’s end you’re looking to friends rather than romance to provide you with the outlet you badly need. Move those work goals along before September arrives. Complete it or apply for it now.

The 18th provides you with a wide, open doorway to travel, solutions, opportunities and love, Sag. From the 20th nothing so-so will ever do again. Not that it ever has if you have always remained true to those wild, untamed needs. Mars in your partnership zone shows you what’s hot and who’s not and there’s no denying either. Don’t allow work projects to slide or simply ignore those deadlines. You could find yourself with a mess to clear up if you do. Yes, your main focus this August is what sets your heart soaring free. But you can’t afford to neglect what provides you with the resources to fund that. Your day job or career for instance. If you’ve spent too much time in the backroom however, the 27th may offer you a chance to move to a front-of-house position. Just do the work required to get there. Then you can play.

August provides you with a ‘Because you’re worth it’ moment thanks to the full Moon in your money and self-worth sector along with ruler Saturn. You’ve a renewed sense of what you are and aren’t prepared to compromise or ‘sell out’ over and what is to you, quite literally priceless. Hold fast to those values around the 22nd. If something simply leaves you with a sense of being short-changed, now is the time to do something about it. It’s no use waiting for your Fairy Godperson to appear. Heaven helps those who help themselves. You should be moving forward with a sense of accomplishment by the end of the month when it comes to love or even your income. Anything that shifts now is merely an outer reflection of inner changes taking place. Bank on self-esteem, Cappy.

Venus in your partnership zone means you remain focussed on ‘you and me’ dynamics all the way through until September. The full Moon in your sign on the 12th puts one particular duo, duet or double act into the spotlight. Emotions will run high from the start of August and it’s important to take a step back if so and ask ‘Is it you or is it me?’. Lucky for you, disharmony is banished by the 22nd and love rules again. Needless to say, singles could be in for surprises while the lovedup amongst us just bask in each other’s reflections. That’s not to say that anything that has gone past its sell-by date should be allowed to limp along any further. Ruler Uranus may provide you with a reality check around that if so. Evolve contains the word ‘love’. Your relationships need to do just that.

Don’t be vague now when it comes to what you want for your future, Pisces. You’re about to hit your yearly love peak from the 23rd when the Sun lands in your house of partnerships of all kinds. But if you’re just drifting along with no clear set intentions, you may end up going nowhere fast. Ruler Neptune wants you to feel a higher, more connected love but you’re being asked if you are afraid to simply ask for this or go search for it. Maybe you think it doesn’t exist. Love is always the answer and the answer is: it’s never too late if you have fallen out of love. Up until the 23rd keep your focus on work, studies or wellbeing matters. The full Moon on the 12th may hand you the feeling you know what’s going to happen next – and then it does. You may know what someone is going to do or what they want before they do. So now apply this superpower to yourself, Pisces.

Original Wild child Kim exploded onto the music scene in the 1980’s defining the sound of the decade with ‘Kids in America’ and subsequent hits ‘Chequered Love,’ ‘You Came’ and ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On.’ Just about to embark on her UK Greatest Hits Tour this September taking her from Glasgow to Bournemouth and everywhere in between, Surrey Rocks caught up with the legendary star and quizzed her on all things musical and somewhat trivial in our 60 Second Interview.

KIM WILDE WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING CONSIDERED THE NUMBER ONE BRITISH FEMALE RECORDING ARTIST IN THE 80’S? All I wanted to do was put out records so this didn’t have a huge impact on me, although this is a great statistic for me! WHEN ‘KIDS IN AMERICA’ EXPLODED ONTO THE MUSIC SCENE IN 1981 YOU BECAME A STAR OVERNIGHT, HOW DID YOU COPE WITH THE FAME? I grew up with a famous Dad (Kim’s Dad Marty Wilde was a rock star in the 60’s) so I wasn’t at all starry eyed although I was only 20 when the record came out - I took to becoming a pop star like a duck to water! WHAT ARE HIGHLIGHTS AND PITFALLS OF BEING A RECORDING ARTIST IN YOUR OPINION? I love music, writing and singing, creating harmonies, melodies and just going to the studio doing what I love. Plus, I get to work with my brother Ricky who is incredibly talented as a guitar player, managing director, producer and song writer. He is actually known in my family as “the genius!” Pitfalls – definitely has to be the talking! I’m sure in the first few years I spent longer talking than singing. I do like the interviews but when you are doing more of them than singing it’s a hard thing to get your head around. WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST CAREER ACHIEVEMENT? Certainly ‘Kids in America’ - that was an awesome piece of pop.

130 SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 12

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT? Becoming a horticulturist. Nature and environment are so important to me and I have done a lot of press on this recently – you don’t have to be retired and old to get into gardening. “Kim and the Courgette” – the new wave of rock and roll! WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN SONG WRITING? Feeling and emotions. My songs are always from a personal perspective. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG AND WHY? ‘You Came’ is beautiful, honest and pure. It was originally written by Ricky after the birth of his first son but we worked on the lyrics together so it could mean something to everyone more in the form of a love song. ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE UPCOMING TOUR? I can’t wait, so excited! The costumes are amazing. There is a lot of surprises and I have two drummers as well as the most amazing band and production team. HAVE YOU GOT ANY NEW MATERIAL OR JUST THE KIM WILDE CLASSICS? In the ‘Greatest Hits Album’ we have two new tracks; one with Boy George and another with Thomas Pool – we are keeping to the Kim Wilde classics for the tour though. WHAT OUR MALE READERS WANT TO KNOW, ARE YOU SINGLE?! I’ll politely decline to answer that at the moment!

WHAT’S THE ‘WILDEST’ THING YOU HAVE DONE? I ended up in a hotel lobby naked! After a night off on tour 5 years ago, I mistakenly thought my bedroom door was the bathroom door and locked myself out of my room in just a thong. I had no option but to walk into reception covering my boobs with my hands to get a spare key. It was so embarrassing! IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? A piano, secret stash of Fruit Pastels and Dr. Hauschka products for my skin. WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS? Professor Brian Cox - we’d spend all night talking about black holes! BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN? My parents always said: “Trust your Instincts” and they were right. Even at 62 I do always listen to what my instinct tells me. BIGGEST INSPIRATION? My children, Harry and Rose. Rose is at University now and Harry is in a band called Wonderhorse. WORST HABIT? Eating too many Fruit Pastels! WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? We are putting a new album together in the early part of 2023 and there is a lot of change going on. Can’t say much more now but I’m steering a steady ship at the moment and just waiting for the next big wave. You know how it is!
