Mike Watson - who toured the world with his band, went solo and secured a spot supporting Maroon 5 on their European Tour, amassing over 10 million streams online - takes on a new challenge. ROXY & JACK REVEAL BABY JOY AFTER LOSS

Model Roxy Horner and comedian Jack Whitehall have revealed they are expecting a baby girl later this year after the couple sadly revealed they suffered a miscarriage in 2022.

Roxy excitedly revealed, “I’m having a little girl! We’ve thought of some names, but I feel like none that are like really sticking out. So if anyone’s got any ideas. I can’t wait.”

Roxy explained that with her previous miscarriage, diabetes and morning sickness it’s been a tough first two trimesters of her pregnancy so far.

“Oh my God, I’ve been so sick. I’m six months now, but up until literally six months, I was throwing up everyday. Once I hit six months, it let me have a break, and I was like, thank God, but I was throwing up eight times a day. It was horrific. Luckily, I had my friend who lives around the corner, and she came to visit me. I was in a bad way for a while.”

It is the first baby for Roxy and Jack who have been dating for 2 years and live in a £17.5 million 5 bedroom mansion in Notting Hill, with their dog Coco.

Whitehall’s new stand-up comedy tour is called ‘Settle Down’ and sees him talk about the recent changes in his life as he readily admits he struggles to settle down as an adult. The show description explains, “This is my most personal show yet, with plenty of material about the big changes that have happened in my life. It’s about my struggle to settle down gracefully. I’ve got a long-term partner, a ridiculous dog and am now hurtling towards middle aged without a clue. It’s about a foppish manchild’s crack-handed attempt at adulting!”

LEWIS CAPALDI ANNOUNCES BREAK FROM TOURING

Singer Lewis Capaldi has announced he is talking a break from touring “for the foreseeable future” as he grapples with his mental health and Tourettes, following his recent Glastonbury performance.

Lewis, 26, was unable to finish his set at Glastonbury Festival with the crowd stepping in to finish the lyrics to ‘Somebody You Used To Know’ as he couldn’t sing on the main Pyramid stage.

Fans took to social media to support the Scottish singer/songwriter as he sadly revealed:

“Hello everyone. First of all thank you to Glastonbury for having me, for singing along when I needed it and for all the amazing messages afterwards. It really does mean the world, the fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it any easier to write, bit I’m very sorry to let you know I’m going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future. I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I’d hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out. But the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”

JOE & STACEY PLANS TO EXTEND BROOD

‘EastEnders’ actor Joe Swash and reality TV star Stacey Solomon already have 6 children between them but Swash recently said in an interview they may well extend their family – but this time by going down the fostering route.

Swash was talking to Mumsnet and revealed his desire to have a bigger family but is not expecting Stacey to carry another child.

“I’m pretty sure that this is it, we can’t go there again which is really sad, we love kids, we love the baby stage, and the toddler stage, and the baby stage goes by really fast, so it is a little bit sad but I think this will be it. Fostering is something that me and Stacey have talked about and would love to do. We’d love to foster, we’d love to give something back, you know? It is something that we definitely want to do, when our kids get old enough that they’re not as reliant on us.”

Joe’s mum Kiffy has been a foster carer for the last 15 years prompting the couple to do the same.

‘Loose Women’ panellist Stacey 33, is already mum to Zachary, 14, and Leighton, 10, from previous relationships, shares son Rex, 4, Rose, 1, and baby Belle with Swash. Joe, 41, also has a son from a previous relationship.

LEMON HERB CHICKEN SKEWERS WITH BLUEBERRYBALSAMIC SALSA

This is a perfect summer recipe as it is light and packed full of flavour. Great for your waistline as well as your tastebuds. Blueberries are the standout ingredient for the sweet and sour sauce that accompany these healthy grilled kebabs. You can also serve any leftover salsa on bread with creamy camembert or tangy goat cheese.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 4)

• 1 garlic clove

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind

• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

• 4 skinless, boneless chicken thighs, each cut into 6 pieces (about 1 pound)

• 1 cup blueberries, divided

• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

• 1/2 teaspoon honey

• 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion

• 1 teaspoon minced jalapeño pepper

• Cooking spray

METHOD

1. Drop garlic through food chute with food processor on; process until chopped. Add parsley and next 6 ingredients; process until finely chopped. Add 1/8 teaspoon salt; pulse to combine. Combine herb mixture and chicken in a medium bowl; toss to combine. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour. Wipe out food processor.

2. Combine 1/2 cup blueberries, vinegar, and honey in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low, and cook 10 minutes or until thickened,

pressing with a spoon to break up blueberries. Place blueberry mixture in a medium bowl. Add remaining 1/2 cup blueberries to food processor; pulse 5 times. Combine chopped blueberries, 1/8 teaspoon salt, onion, and jalapeño pepper with vinegar mixture.

3. Preheat grill to medium high heat.

4. Thread 6 chicken pieces evenly onto each of the 4 (8-inch) skewers. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Place chicken on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 10 minutes, turning occasionally.

5. Serve with blueberry salsa.

WINE MATCH

Any dish with lemon has a high level of acidity, which will make any wine you drink taste sweeter. So although pairing a citrusy Sauvignon Blanc may seem like a natural choice it should be avoided as it could make the wine taste flat. A far better option would be to go for a neutral Italian or Spanish wine – something earthy like a Verdicchio, an Albarino or Spain´s up and coming white Godello. If you are not up for hunting in a good wine merchants, a mid-priced range Pinot Grigio from your local supermarket could always do the trick.

If red takes your fancy, opt for a red with a marked acidity of its own like an Italian Valpolicella or tannic Chianti. An oak-aged Spanish red such as Rioja Reserva also tastes great with lemon and chicken.

BARBIE MOVIE

Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as her beau Ken, alongside narrator Helen Mirren and actors America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Emerald Fennell, Simu Liu, Michael Cera and Will Ferrell as the CEO of Barbie maker, Mattel, the film also features a cameo from singer Dua Lipa as a blue-haired Mermaid Barbie.

The plot centres around a Barbie doll living in Barbieland who is expelled from their world for not being perfect enough, too eccentric and not fitting the usual mould (Margot’s character). We are expecting there to be references to the unrealistic and much-criticised unattainable body type of Barbie referenced in this side plotline!

Barbie then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realisation that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself.

The film is directed by Greta Gerwig and the story is written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, who previously worked together on the critically acclaimed ‘Frances Ha’ in 2012.

PJ Harvey returns with her tenth studio album, ‘I Inside the Old Year Dying’.

The new album, Harvey’s first since 2016’s Grammy-nominated ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ is produced by long-time collaborators Flood and John Parish and was created at Battery Studios in London.

More intimate than its predecessors, it marks a shift away from the big themes of hits ‘Let England Shake’ and ‘Hope Six’.

With the new songs performed as-live in the studio, ‘I Inside the Old Year Dying’ makes for a very tactile, human record; partly because just about everything on it is rooted in improvisation: spontaneous performances and ideas, recorded at the moment of their creation.

About Surrey Rocks x Surrey Fashion Week

Following the success of the first celebrity charity fashion show I brought to Surrey with our county’s very own Pussycat Doll, Kimberly Wyatt, and a London Fashion Week (LFW) designer during LFW in September 2021, I co-founded Surrey Fashion Week, with Surrey Rocks as the official media partner and co-organiser of SFW - Insta @surreyfashionweekuk – last year.

I’d teamed up with Surrey Rocks’ Editor Sam and her ever-expanding Rocks Mag brand, and our fellow Surreyite Kim and her pro model husband Max Rogers, to promote the inaugural celebrity charity fashion event in our county. Hosted by Surrey’s glamorous soap actress Debbie Arnold, and fittingly held in aid of late fashion designer Vivienne

Westwoood’s ‘Cool Earth’ charity, our first celebrity catwalk show featured a sustainable fashion theme at the fairytale De Vere Horsley Estate, whose famous towers have featured in ‘The Crown’.

2022’s glam inclusive event at Egham’s Great Fosters, meanwhile, saw another unique star-studded celebrity charity catwalk show take place last September, this time in aid of Mind mental health charity and the struggling Surrey fashion boutiques showcasing, along with popups from Surrey brands offering a premium one-stopshop ‘Bond Street’ shopping experience in the stunning Surrey venue’s Orangery. The evening was brilliantly hosted by Surrey-based Sky Sports and BBC football presenter/commentator Bryn Lucas and sponsored by Hampton Court Gin and ‘Made In Chelsea’ star Amelia Mist’s work’s drink LDN SPRITZ by London Cru. This time boasting a diverse and inclusive theme, we again featured models of all ages,

shapes and sizes – from young teens to a former Miss Great Britain and Miss World runner-up, still rocking the runway at nearly 80, along with two-time Paralympian and world-class tennis player Louise Hunt modelling in her wheelchair. What’s more, we even had several of the K9 Angel charity’s Romanian rescue dogs on the catwalk, donning matching fashion with their famous model walkers!

SFW22 also saw the official launch party for K9 Angel and BRIT Award-winning S Club 7 star and solo artist Jo O’Meara’s new cover version of Michael Jackson’s hit track ‘Thriller’, which she released the very same day.

A Strictly Sensational SFW22!

Kicked off in true Strictly style by official BBC ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ choreographers Maria Tsiatsiani & Leandro Palou, the inclusive and diverse celebrity catwalk concept show saw dazzling dance numbers especially choreographed for SFW, plus phenomenal performances from S Club’s Jo, Surrey singer/songwriter Cassa Jackson (who has supported JLS and Blue and now headlines her own shows), along with fast-rising star Eleni C (who has performed alongside Surrey singer Peter Andre) and Surrey’s coolest jazz singer, Mikey D. Glamorous guests included ‘Strictly’ stars Oti Mabuse (now a judge on ‘Dancing On Ice’ and ‘The Masked Dancer’ and presenter of her own eponymous TV show) and her pro dancer husband Marius Iepure, who also modelled at SFW and spoke about how he has recently successfully campaigned to make Dance an Olympic sport.

The highly anticipated Surrey Awards were sponsored by Dorking Halls, Guildford’s G Live,

Esher Theatre, Bell & Colvill and Alexander James Interiors. Local press, TV and radio presenters also rubbed shoulders with the stars gracing the awardwinning vineyard’s red carpet - former ‘Miss Kingston’ Jessica Monaco, award-winning influencer and cofounder of the K9 Angels rescue dog charity Victoria Featherston Pearce, and Hollywood Disney and Marvel movie producers hot-off-the-plane from the catwalks of the Cannes Film Festival among them. The glitzy gala saw a sparkling Welcome Reception with fine English wine and appetising Gin shots from WATTSHOT, as red-carpet arrivals were serenaded by ‘X-Factor’ star Russell Jones, who does a mean Michael Bublé and has even duetted with the Canadian crooner! Russell later made his modelling debut in our casual SFW catwalk show, all topped off with spellbinding performances from Sav (AKA Head of Magic) who made his magic moves around the amazed gathering crowd.

‘A Place in the Surrey Sun’ –New Fashion from Laura!

We also had a very special video message of support from Surrey’s ‘A Place in the Sun’ presenter Laura Hamilton, who was unable to attend the evening due to her full-on filming commitments but wanted to support our exciting event from behind the scenes. The popular Channel 4 TV presenter exclusively revealed she has expanded her horizons into the world of fashion and is launching her very own clothing brand this month!

SFW23 Takes to The Stage

Cutting-edge 360 video fun for our fashion brands and guests was supplied by RR360 as attendees sipped on Denbies’ finest fizz and hot-off-the-press WATTSHOT gin, followed by a fashion extravaganza from Surrey Fashion Week after our glam guests took their seats in Denbies’ grand Conservatory Atrium. MTV’s DJ Cream pumped out top tunes for our runway show, which took various routes through the stunning vineyard’s tables, culminating with our famous and pro models showcasing Surrey fashion brands in an electrifying impromptu party on the stage! Also among our famous models showcasing a few of Surrey’s best fashion boutiques were Surrey-based Miss Great Britain 2023 finalist and entrepreneur Danielle Baron, our county’s resident ‘Celebs Go Dating’ coach

Nadia Essex, model and influencer Italia Bond, personal stylist Angela Kyte and actor and GQ model Tayo Oyekoya, all made up by Dorking-based celeb make-up artist Jana Jurakova.

Showcasing sustainable outfits from local chic boutique Anni & Arthur’s Yard in Dorking – a fab go-to for preloved designer and luxury pieces at affordable prices - along with outstanding outfits from other local fashion brands, our magnificent models ROCKED the runway. From cool casual beachwear, to gorgeous glistening ballgowns, inspiring pieces also showcased independent clothing and accessories boutique Alamanda, featuring vibrant fashion with a contemporary and timeless design on our Ukrainian model Karolinka, shimmying her way down the runway,

along with SFW stalwart Ruby La La, who walked away with huge smiles on their faces that night, over-themoon happy with the gong they later picked up for ‘Highly Commended’ in the Womenswear category. Also showcasing were Bumbles in Ashtead, Thames Ditton’s Rosella Style and Weybridge-based Boutique Sale.

Cooly walking through the anticipant tables to the stage were our brilliant ‘Best Menswear Fashion’winning brand Ad Clothing, and super-smart brand serving both Surrey and Kent Howard & Co. - THE goto menswear brand for the very finest of handcrafted attire and handmade shoes, the dapper brand later clinched the ‘Highly Commended’ trophy in the male fashion category.

Hot Celeb Chef Jameson Stocks Debuts New Fashion Brand at Surrey Fashion Week!

‘Talk-of-the-town’ multi-award-winning celebrity chef Jameson Stocks exclusively debuted a phenomenal piece from fast-rising fashion designer Emily Meel, which made its British debut on Jameson on the Surrey Awards’ SFW catwalk.

Having worked with all the big names, regularly serving up culinary delights to Hollywood heavyweights and Canada’s elite, jet set Jameson is now a household name himself. And since being spotted just days after our show with Jo Wood at the Polo, has been pursued by the press ever since!

After our amazing models took to the stage and danced to DJ Cream’s banging beats, they took to their seats to join us for a delectable three-course meal, washed down with wonderful wines, all served up before the glittering Awards ceremony commenced.

Glamorous guests were treated to world-class performances from Tatler-featured luxury harpist Amie True (who also made her modelling debut) throughout

the mouth-watering meal, along with powerhouse star of ‘The Voice’ Amrick Channa and sensational Surrey singer Agnes Jones, who teamed up with another amazing artist, Archie Xn Trick.

Cannes Film Fest-Winning Attendees

Attending our Awards fresh from winning an award of her own at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, one of my VIP guests on my top table - multi-award winning author, entrepreneur, writer and producer of books and films at London’s Monster World Studios, Donia Youssef - has kindly donated a signed box collection, comprising three hard copies of her priceless original books ‘For Sadie and The Grove’, to our charity silent auction accompanying our dazzling event. These will be worth a small FORTUNE in the future, with the accompanying film being narrated by an A-list actress. Fast-rising star Donia is another of my highprofile friends who is having a Hollywood film being made about her incredible life, in which she will also be played by a Hollywood heavyweight!

Celeb Guests & Charity Supporters

Famous faces, including ‘Top Boy’ actor Shane Romulus, ‘Bond’ star and philanthropic ‘Big Brother’ winner Jason Burrill, along with top TV stars, influencers and footballers also attended on my celebrity VIP list, all supporting the rewarding and fun event, which we held in aid of a very worthy cause – the UK’s largest men’s health charity, Prostate Cancer UK. Legendary names from the worlds of music, showbiz and sport – including Stephen Fry, musician Nile Rodgers, Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent and presenter Bill Turnbull – are among the strong supporters of, and ambassadors for, the charity. With one in eight men being diagnosed with the disease, including both my and Sam’s fathers, the charity raises vital funds for research into helping to save lives. My dad, thankfully, has a very positive outcome, thanks to the amazing Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton, right here in Surrey.

The Awards

As a celebrity journalist and co-founder of Surrey Fashion Week @surreyfashionweekuk, I was proud to be on the judging panel alongside our fantastic host Bobby Davro, founder of the Surrey Awards and Editor

of Surrey Rocks Sam Matthews, BBC Sports’ ‘Match of the Day’ pundit and former England, Liverpool & Tottenham footballer Danny Murphy, SFW model and Director of Surrey’s La Vida Model Management Kate Tatum, and former Elle and Sky Magazine Managing Director Martin Matthews.

From fashion, food & drink, to hotels, hairdressers and golf courses, the public also voted for their favourite Surrey schools, beauty salons and spas, along with the crème de la crème of coffee shops, dessert bars and more, with seven brands shortlisted in each category after I, and the other Awards’ judges, shortlisted the final nominees. Since 1st March, 7,000 members of the public had been voting for their favourites across 18 categories via Surrey Rocks magazine’s secure online voting system, and we couldn’t WAIT for the big reveal…

Opening each gold envelope to a drumroll, Bobby Davro and Rachel Warren announced the enclosed winners and highly commended businesses in true Oscar style, the winning brands and runners-up proudly receiving their coveted Surrey Awards on stage.

Red-Carpet Chats

“What a fantastic night at Denbies!” ‘Bond’ actor Jason Burrill told me when I interviewed a few of our famous attendees on the red carpet later that evening. “It was a wonderful venue to raise money for prostate cancer. The Surrey Awards were an amazing success, and we all look forward to the next one.”

The philanthropic star is all about assisting charities and is currently in training to row across the Channel next spring - from Brighton to Dieppe – to raise funds for young people through The Starr Trust. “It’s exciting to be involved with such a committed charity that removes roadblocks and further supports young people to achieve their dreams, he said.”

The ‘Big Brother’ winner also supports the K9 Angels and will be speaking about their wonderful work rescuing dogs from Eastern Europe at our next celebrity charity fundraiser in aid of the canine charity, which is currently rescuing pooches from Ukraine. This will also be in aid of Hospices of Hope’s campaign to build a new hospice in the war-torn country.

That’s a Wrap

Our inaugural Surrey Awards were rounded off with music and dancing in the Garden Room – including an exclusive live PA from DJ Cream and Amrick Channa. The Awards were a resounding success!All proceeds from ticket sales and our accompanying silent auction of celebrity experiences and amazing prizes, kindly donated by famous faces at our event, friends of the Awards and Surrey Fashion Week, Surrey Awards’ nominees and other local businesses and beyond, will go to Prostate Cancer UK.

Surrey + Celebs + Ukraine Rocks!

Up next? We’re now planning our next big celebrity fundraiser - Ukraine Rocks! - which will be held in aid of war-torn Ukraine and for which we will be launching a new Ukraine Rocks magazine.

I am again collaborating with Surrey Rocks, the incredible charity Hospices of Hope (with whom I visited Ukrainian refugee children currently being cared for in one of their hospices in Romania - the charity is currently fundraising to build a muchneeded hospice in Ukraine), and our Awards attendee and award-winning lifestyle influencer Victoria Featherstone Pearce, who is currently rescuing dogs from Ukraine with her co-founders and fellow K9

Angels Pola Pospieszalska and S Club 7 & solo star Jo O’Meara, who headlined our SFW22. We will also be joined by K9 Angels’ supporters, including Surrey-based broadcaster Eamonn Holmes and our ‘Bond’ star and ‘Big Brother’-winning Awards x SFW22 model Jason Burrill. Also on board are TalentedU, an incredible group of talented Ukrainian filmmakers and TV media who have come together here in the UK after losing their jobs in their home country due to the war.

The Talented U team filmed the fantastic official video for our Surrey Awards x SFW 2023, along with a moving documentary series featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Lineker, actress Emma Thompson, writer Jenni Murray and Surrey-based former UK No.1 tennis player Andrew Castle, who have all opened their doors to offer a safe haven in their own homes to refugees from Ukraine.

This heart-wrenching ‘Home for Ukraine’ documentary series, about the war seen through the eyes of British celebrities, showcases famous faces and the families they have sheltered through the ‘Homes For Ukraine’ scheme, telling their personal stories about the hell of war and the difficulties they faced. The Running Mare is one of the most iconic destination pubs in Cobham, and one of the most renowned dining restaurants in Surrey. An indulgent new tapas and steak restaurant opened in the heart of Esher. The vast selection of authentic Spanish dishes will tantalise the taste buds and will ensure you return again and again to sample the full menu.

FOXHILLS - THE FOX DINING ROOMS

We knew we were in for a treat when an invite to try out the award-winning Foxhills, The Fox dining rooms landed in our inbox! And the experience did not disappoint, being 5 star all the way.

Surrey Rocks Editor Sam and her intrepid diners (Emerson, Archie & Riley) decided to make a weekend of it and booked in for an overnight stay thanks to the ever-friendly team at Foxhills who organised a family room at an incredible rate, located right by the heated outdoor pool, much to our younger visitor’s joy.

Located in the heart of the 19th-century Manor House at Foxhills in Ottershaw, The Fox dining rooms presents award-

winning dining across three individually designed rooms, all with stunning décor. For dinner we were seated in the Music Room; high ceilings and beautiful African inspired artwork adorned the wall, it felt truly magical.

We were treated with a diverse menu of tantalising dishes and our waiter and matre de were on point all night, suggesting great wine options and helpful pointers on the menu choices – it is worth noting that all the ingredients were fresh and top quality and with unparalleled customer service –this not to be missed, fine dining experience made it a night to remember.

FOR STARTER

For starter we opted for the Leek & Potato soup which consisted of a potato soufflé, baron bigod and leek ash, perfectly blended – the taste explosion was out of this world, definitely one of the best soups we have ever tried. The Fox dining rooms bread rolls were delicious too - cooked fresh on site with homemade creamy butter – perfect for mopping up the remaining soup. There was literally none left, not a morsel!

Next up was the Smoked Pigeon Breast which came with a blackberry compressed raddichio and parsnip puree. The meat was tender and was perfectly offset by the tanginess of the berries and sweetness of the puree. Our younger diners

went for the Chicken Goujons which were superb and made with succulent chicken breast and crispy breadcrumb coating accompanied with a side salad. It is worth noting the starter portions were not huge but in a good way as we were able to try the remaining menu without filling up too much.

GASTRONOMY REVIEW FOR MAINS

With such a wide-ranging Mains menu (catering for all food types including Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten Free) we struggled to choose just the one main each! On the helpful advice of our attentive waiter we went for the Braised Beef Short Rib – which was served with maitake, rosti and caramelised artichoke purée. The meat literally fell off the

bone, was so sweet and tender…. this was the dish of the night. Luckily two diners ordered so we all got to try and everyone agreed this was the best of the best. The crispy triple fried rosti’s were an amazing accompaniment too and the jus was to die for! A glass of the red Shiraz was recommended to go with and it totally hit the spot.

Another one of our diners opted for the Confit Pork Belly, presented with crispy cheek, crushed swede and apple caramel. This was also delicious and hardly any fat. The meat was cooked perfectly crispy on the outside whilst remaining soft and tender on the inner layers.

GASTRONOMY REVIEW

Last up for our Main selection was the Corn Fed Chicken Breast which consisted of a crispy wing of chicken, wild garlic and pearl barley. The flavours worked perfectly and were not too over bearing as is often the case with garlic infused dishes. One of our diners was completely sold with the pearl barley too – a healthy and but perfectly fitting alternative to normal green vegetables served on the side with chicken. Definitely to be sampled on our next visit was the Salt Baked Celeriac and Pan Fried Sea Bream which our neighbouring table went for. These also looked utterly delicious and so well presented as did the Truffle Gnocchi.

Again, the abundance of choice in The Fox dining rooms menu was terrific, and will definitely keep diners coming back for more. (We have already booked in by the way!)

DESSERT HEAVEN

Despite starting to fill up we knew we were in for yet another treat and just had to try the fabulous Dessert Menu at The Fox.

We went for the Strawberry Panacotta with Italian meringue, lemon balm and sable. The Panacotta was smooth and creamy which perfectly offset the crispy yet incredibly light meringue.

Next up was the Mango Cheesecake with a tarragon and mango compot, sherbet accompanied with blueberry ice cream – what an amazing blend of delicious flavours. The fizz of the sherbet was just amazing in this ever-creative dessert choice and mango and blueberry go so well together, we discovered!

Our final dessert choice was the traditional Apple & Pear Crumble which came with fudge, brandy custard, macadamia and ginger. The crumble was sweet but toned down perfectly with the sharpness of the fruit, brandy and ginger.

Hats off to the amazing culinary team at The Fox dining rooms – the food was splendid – well worthy of the 5 Star reviews. We loved every mouthful!

However, navigating the vast sea of fashion brands and deciphering their claims can be a daunting task. If we unravel the different ideas, claims and guarantees out there we can begin to determine if the clothes we are buying are ethically made and sustainably sourced - or whether the brands we love are masking bad

LOOK FOR CERTIFICATIONS

One reliable way to identify sustainable and ethically made clothing is to look for certifications. Several organisations such as Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and Bluesign, provide certifications that guarantee ethical labour practices and environmentally friendly production. These certifications ensure that the clothing you

purchase meet specific standards, including fair wages, safe working conditions, and reduced environmental impact.

RESEARCH LABOUR PRACTICES

Ethical sourcing extends beyond environmental considerations to the treatment of workers in the supply chain. Before making a purchase, dig deeper into a brand’s labour practices.

Clothes have a cost which will need to cover everything from the production of the virgin material right through to shipping the final product. If we as the consumer are not paying an amount

that could reasonably cover these costs, (think ultra cheap brands such as Shein), then bear in mind before buying, that somewhere in that supply chain, enough corners are being cut elsewhere for the business to make huge profits.

(According to Bloomberg, Shein was valued at £80b in April 2022.) Often, these companies make back the money lost through extremely low prices, by paying below the living wage to factory workers, and demanding dangerously long working hours. Last year, a channel 4 documentary uncovered that Shein workers were receiving a monthly salary of 4000 yuanaround £450 - to make 500 pieces of clothing per day! So before you buy, ask: is this brand committed to fair wages and safe working conditions? Do they provide opportunities for training and development? Independent organisations such as the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) and Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) evaluate and monitor brands to ensure fair labour practices.

CONSIDER LONGEVITY AND DURABILITY

One often overlooked aspect of sustainability is the longevity and durability of clothing. Fast fashion encourages disposable consumption and contributes to the mounting waste crisis.

Instead, prioritise well-made garments that are designed to last. Look for quality construction, durable fabrics, and timeless styles that will withstand the test of time, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

MAKING THE CHANGE

As a consumer, you have the power to drive change in the fashion industry by making informed choices, but determining the sustainability and ethical nature of clothing can be challenging. For many of us, the simplest way to shop in a cleaner and greener manner without too much additional research, is by sourcing clothing via online apps such as Ebay and Vinted, or in preloved stores like Phoenix in Cobham & Wimbledon, or Spin Preloved, charity shops and vintage markets. With a few considered changes and choices, we can all navigate the fashion landscape more responsibly; and remember, every conscious purchase we make contributes to a more sustainable and ethical future.

FULFILLING YOUR

Your bedroom is one of the most important spaces in a home. Too many of us categorise it as the place that I just sleep, but the layout and material palette you use could hugely make a difference on the quality of sleep you get. And in our current crazy world isn’t that worth prioritising? It is also sometimes the one room in your home where you keep everything that is just yours. From toiletries, to clothes, to accessories, they are your personal belongings and they deserve to be organised and accessible.

THE REQUIREMENTS

I think starting with a list of requirements and prioritising them is essential for this space. This is a personal room, it isn’t the generic family bathroom, or the utilitarian utility room, it is your space, (which

annoyingly you have to sometimes share with a partner) and it needs to be bespoke to you and your needs.

If you have existing furniture to re-use, then start with these items, including their dimensions and design imprint they will make on the room, as this will need to tie-in with anything new. Then work down your requirement list covering the bed, storage (and what needs to be stored), lighting, window treatments, additional furniture and any other must haves or nice to haves for the room.

THE LAYOUT

As with all new interior projects, the layout has to been seen on paper to scale. The biggest challenge with the bedroom is our beds today are so much bigger. With 80% of us now sleeping in a super king bed, this can hugely impact the space left for all your other requirements.

Here are some top tips: If you have a very large room, consider adding a stud wall to divide the space and create a walkin wardrobe. Not only are they a much coveted addition to a bedroom, but it means you can remove all the storage and potential mess from your sleeping sanctuary.

A modified walk-in wardrobe can also work well in a long, narrow space. By moving the bed forward, add either a small stud wall or oversized headboard behind the bed and use the space behind for storage.

If you have a very small room, then use the space either side the bed for the clothes storage. If you need hanging room it will need to be a minim of 580mm deep. When we create bespoke versions of this, we also add a bedside nook into the storage with integrated lighting. If you are going for an off the shelf option, then a shelf above the bed can work well for your bedside needs.

THE DESIGN

The design, material palette and colour choice for this space is really important. As I mentioned if you have existing furniture then this has to be your starting off point for the design.

If you have a small space, then a limited material and colour palette will really help you make the room feel bigger.

In previous projects we have used reclaimed timber on the walls and continued it onto the wardrobes to camouflage them and maximise its size impact. Another trick we use is to paint everything the same colour, including the ceiling. It streamlines the rooms and allows you to really focus the eye on one or two design elements.

The main purpose of the bedroom is to encourage sleep, so this again needs to influence your design choices. It is about analysing what in your surroundings relaxes you and then mimicking this in the colours, textures and finishes you choose for your space.

THE BED

How many people say the bed is your most important purchase? They are wrong, it is actually the mattress! That’s not to say if your budget allows an incredible bed isn’t a fantastic addition. We have certainly designed a range of bespoke beds in very different styles, from warm and rustic, to luxurious and captivating.

The bed can also be a useful place for additional storage. Under bed drawers, or beds that lift or even just a place to hide bags and boxes. If you are tight on space, selecting either a storage bed or a taller bed frame which gives you more height underneath can really help you reach your storage requirements.

We also often add extra storage within a headboard. If you increase the depth of the headboard, then it allows you to create some bedside nooks and extra shelving without taking up much extra floor space. If you are trying to stretch your budget, then adding an oversized headboard to your bed is a really cost effective way to elevate your space. You could even make it yourself and by choosing an amazing fabric it instantly gives the room a highend finish.

LIGHTING

If you have read a few of my columns you will know that I am passionate about layered lighting. The bedroom is no different and actually it is vital in this room that you can zone the lighting and change it for the different tasks.

If you are keeping your existing wiring and lighting and socket placements, then shop carefully for the lamps and lighting you add to the room. It is really simple to switch to dimmer switches and this alone will make a huge difference. As a minimum you need overhead lighting for task lighting and waking you up in the morning and then lamps for bedside reading and around mirrored areas for a clear visuals.

If you are starting from scratch with this room, then circuits and switch positions are invaluable. My top tips are if the bed in central in the room have a gorgeous pendant directly over the bed on it’s own lighting circuit. Then on circuit two add some dimmable downlights over the edges of the bed and in front of any joinery storage or mirrored areas. If your storage is bespoke add lights inside of your joinery that work on a sensor, so you can clearly see everything lit up and easy to find when you open the doors. Bedside the beds ideally either wall lights or small hanging

pendants and then directional reading lights off the bed head, on separate circuits that are controlled both from the door and bedside your bed.

STORAGE

What and how much storage you can have is hugely dependant on how much space you have.

Hanging space is great as it keeps clothes organised and crease free, but it does take up space. Where possible opt for two hanging rails and maximise the space above and below for further storage.

Dividing up and creating definite zones for every item really helps keep you organised and efficient in your room. We mostly design and create bespoke joinery for bedrooms as this allows us to design and maximise our client needs. If you decide to go for this option, spend the time working out how much you currently have of each garment/accessory and predict the future capacity you will need. This then allows you to be specific with hanging rails, shoe cubby holes, bag shelves, accessory nooks etc.

If bespoke joinery isn’t on the cards, then combining a highstreet solution with more unique doors allows you to cheat the look. Ikea, for example are amazing for offering a huge amount of storage solutions. If you team then with doors and drawer fronts from Noremax.com, then you will find so many incredible design options that will tie into your interior scheme.

Dressing tables are also incredibly useful in the bedroom. If this is a big room, then go for the full table with drawers and cupboards, pull outs, pull ups and a seating option. Having lots of sections to store make-up and toiletries makes you feel in charge and organised from the very start of your day!

For tight spaces we do try and add at least an integrated standing table, with a full lit mirror behind. Most of us don’t have the luxury of time to sit and beautify anyway, but it provides a space to organise your jewellery/makeup etc and speeds up the task in the morning.

THE WISH LIST

From your requirement list, there maybe other wish list items that you want to incorporate into the room. Seating is a popular addition and in your own private space it is lovely to have somewhere to retreat to. If we have the space then a set-up of two lounge chairs with a table and lamp is a favourite addition. A place to read, check your emails or enjoy a peaceful coffee moment before the day takes over is very special. With more and more of our projects adding balconies and Juliet balconies to their bedrooms, you can create a magical moment enjoying a connection to nature in the peace of your own bedroom. If space is tight then a sofa or bench at the end of a bed can work well, although you will have to work hard to prevent it becoming a dumping ground. Alternatively, a hanging or beautiful feature chair in the corner of a room still allows you a moment and it can be a great focal point in the space.

The TV in the bedroom is a real divider. Some clients hate them and some can’t live without them. If you want one and have the budget incase it in joinery that hides it away. The joinery can also be used to provide extra storage or a feature gas/electric or bioethanol fire.

Art is so key in the bedroom and actually it is the one room where you will get to enjoy it. If you have a favourite piece then why not position it to be seen clearly from the bed. It will be the first and last thing you see, how special is that? Alternatively, a gallery wall of photographs works well, allowing you to see you favourite people in your special sanctuary.

Just because the bedroom isn’t seen by all, doesn’t make it any less important. It needs careful design, practical solutions and tranquil results.

illed as ‘the most rambunctious garden fête!’ the Great Estate Festival set within the mystical grounds of the Scorrier Estate in Cornwall on June 2nd – 4th was a fantastic weekend of live music, culture and entertainment for all with Primal Scream headlining alongside Symphonic Ibiza, Henge, Lost in the Woods and The Cuban Brothers among others. Now in it’s 6th year this festival keeps growing and growing!

SSILENT POOL CELEBRATE WORLD GIN DAY

ilent Pool Distillers threw a fabulous World Gin Day Party on Saturday June 10th where guests enjoyed mini distillery tours, spirit sampling - including the new Kaffir Lime Expression released that day - and relaxed with a cocktail (or two!) at the luxurious Pool Bar by the famous Silent Pool.
