EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE IPHONE 14

Billed by Apple as, ‘A magical new way to interact with iPhone. A vital new safety feature designed to save lives. An innovative 48MP camera for mind-blowing detail. All powered by the ultimate smartphone chip.’

But is it as good as the US tech giant is making out? Well delving deeper into the new device does make it seem so...

LIVE SAVING DEVICE, URM YES!

When your iPhone 14 (all models iPhone 14, Plus, Pro & Pro Max) detects a severe car crash of 256G’s, it will display an alert that automatically initiates an emergency phone call after 20 seconds unless you cancel. If you are unresponsive, your iPhone will play an audio message for emergency services, which informs them that you’ve been in a severe crash and gives them your precise latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates with an approximate search radius.

“The entire iPhone 14 line-up introduces groundbreaking safety capabilities that can provide emergency assistance when it matters most. With a new dual-core accelerometer capable of detecting G-force measurements of up to 256Gs and a new high dynamic range gyroscope, Crash Detection on iPhone can now detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone,” Apple said.

The device also automatically notifies your phone’s emergency contacts if you are involved in a crash so family and friends are aware.

This new feature of the iPhone 14 could well save lives.

NEW & IMPROVED CAMERA

Apple has bumped the main camera up from 12MP to a whopping innovative 48MP for amazingly detailed photos. Video fans out there will be wowed by the new and improved quality and editing capabilities.

Also, the iPhone 14 Pro also comes with a much thicker camera bump, and that’s due to the bigger sensors and lenses that Apple has packed into the device. But if you prefer to use a naked device (sans case!) and set your phone down, the unevenness may be more noticeable. But if you use a case, depending on the one that you choose, it may be less noticeable as some provide thicker cut-outs to make it as flush as possible.

QUICKER PROCESSING & AESTHETICS

Apple's brand new A16 Bionic chip for faster processing power, replaces the iPhone 13 notch with the all-new Dynamic Island that uses all of your available screen real estate. It also has an Always-On display.

The iPhone 14 Pro looks the same as the iPhone 13 Pro with the same stainless steel flat edges that have been present since the iPhone 12, a frosted matte glass back, and the ceramic shield that makes the front glass more drop resistant and resilient to scratches.

The all-new Deep Purple is a beautiful addition to this year’s mainstay colours of Space Black, Gold and Silver.

Prices start from £1099.

IN THE PRESS:

RADIO TIMES: ‘There is an awful lot to like about the iPhone 14 Pro. Unless you're dying to have a bigger display then it's the stand-out phone in Apple's new line-up. It's also one of the very best smartphones available right now.’

ZDNET: ‘With so many new camera features, a new alert and multitasking experience, and a display that breaks new ground, the iPhone 14 Pro might be even better than advertised.’

POCKETLINT: ‘Sure, it's pretty heavy, it's very expensive, and it offers all the same features as its smaller sibling, but it's a stunning device for those who want a larger screen or more battery life.’

WHAT'S TRENDING... AUNATURAL

A lot of women who have “over done” their skin by using peels, harsh products, dermabrasion, Botox and fillers, are now looking to repair and improve skin health with other alternatives.

This is because overuse of Botox can lead to muscle atrophy, causing the muscle to become lifeless, making it hard to stimulate and correct the muscle definition during skin treatments. Also, it can be apparent with thinning of the skin where you can visibly see discolouration with waves of reds and purples, where the skin can be prone to transparently show the muscle.

Overuse of fillers can stretch the skin over time and migrate causing facial distortion (also known as pillow face), leading to an undesirable look. Lisa Harris, of Lisa Harris Skin Science explains how injectables can speed up the ageing process. Injectables are relatively safe but overuse is not a good thing. It’s a “No” for me and I’m glad that there is more awareness and better ways to improve your skins youthfulness.

Skin can be transformed using non-injectable skin aesthetics, cosmeceutical skin care and skin food supplements. All three ways will transform the skin positively, and the client will see for themselves the improvements that all three together elicit. This is why I am so confident there is nothing more persuasive than seeing positive results, especially when you know they are achieved in the right way.

CORRECTIVE TREATMENTS

With 27+ years in the Aesthetic Industry, I have used my wealth of knowledge, and clinical experience, to create Signature Skin Treatments, combining exclusive advanced technology and natural raw materials that organically rebuild the integrity of the skin, which addresses all skin concerns. Improving muscle tone, skin vitality and boosting collagen (skin tightening), that results in a more natural, desirable look. We have global recognition for delivering facial rejuvenation and body treatments with long-lasting benefits.

GUT & SKIN HEALTH

Your skin is like a window into the health of your inner world, and because so many things in our lifestyles can wipe out the good bacteria we’re supposed to have, our skin often reflects imbalances in the system. Looking after your gut with; Prebiotics & Probiotics, help to repair your gut lining and feeds your microbiome (good bacteria). This will help to heal inflammation within your body (linked to Rosacea, Acne & Eczema), as well as keeping your skin looking younger & healthier.

Lisa Harris’ ethos is to improve the overall skin health and speak the truth about skin ageing and how to slow this process down by increasing the volume within the skin and not by thinning out the skin.

RECIPE

‘CHILLIN’ CON CARNE

Autumn is here and we can warm up and chill in on those cold October nights with this delicious chilli con carne recipe. What’s more it is only 387 calories per portion and has a 5 star rating on BBC Good Food, it’s the perfect comfort food!

INGREDIENTS

1 large onion

1 red pepper

2 garlic cloves, peeled

1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder (or 1 level tbsp if you only have mild)

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp ground cumin

500g lean minced beef

1 beef stock cube

400g can chopped tomatoes

½ tsp dried marjoram

1 tsp sugar

2 tbsp tomato purée

410g can red kidney beans

plain boiled long grain rice soured cream, to serve

METHOD

1. Dice 1 large onion, cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. Peel and finely chop

2 garlic cloves.

2. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently, for about 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft, squidgy and slightly translucent. Tip in the garlic, red pepper,

1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder or 1 level tbsp mild chilli powder, 1 tsp paprika and 1 tsp ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, mince-sized lumps and there are no more pink bits. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew.

4. Crumble 1 beef stock cube into 300ml hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open 1 can of chopped tomatoes and add these as well. Tip in ½ tsp dried marjoram and 1 tsp sugar, and add a good shake of salt and pepper. Squirt in about 2 tbsp tomato purée and stir the sauce well.

5. Bring the whole thing to the

boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy.

6. Drain and rinse 1 can of red kidney beans and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again, and gently bubble without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Taste a bit of the chilli and season. It will probably take a lot more seasoning than you think. Now replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving, and relax. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the flavours to mingle and the meat.

7. Serve with soured cream and plain boiled long grain rice.

WINE PAIRING

A beer would be the safest option to have with a chilli, but safe is boring! Instead opt for a Red Zinfandel, which is both rich and ripe, bursting with bramble fruit with just a touch of vanilla. These flavours create the perfect blend to mix with anything meaty.

A Beefsteak Club Malbec says it all in the name, the wine that is made for beef. Deep and vibrant with an intense nose of plum, damson and dark chocolate aromas. Lush and layered on the palate, with well-integrated oak and plenty of fine tannins, it will complement your chilli to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

MOVIE REVIEW

TICKET TO PARADISE

This roaring rom-com will thoroughly thrill and entertain audiences of all ages this month! See Academy Award winners George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite on the big screen (for the first time since ‘Oceans 11’) as exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made.

From Working Title, Smokehouse Pictures and Red Om Films, ‘Ticket to Paradise’ is a romantic comedy about the sweet surprise of second chances.

Directed by Ol Parker of ‘Mamma Mia!’ and ‘Here We Go Again’ fame and from the writer of the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ from his script with Daniel Pipski, ‘Ticket to Paradise’ is produced by Tim Bevan (‘Darkest Hour’, ‘The Danish Girl’) and Eric Fellner (‘The Theory of Everything’, ‘Les Misérables’) for Working Title, by Sarah Harvey (‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’, co-producer ‘In Bruges’), by Deborah Balderstone (Palm Beach, Gone), by George Clooney and Oscar winner Grant Heslov (Argo, The Midnight Sky ) for Smokehouse Pictures and by Julia Roberts and Lisa Roberts Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill (both co-executive producers for the famed ‘Homecoming’ series) for Red Om Films. With this calibre of studio, writing and production talent you know you are in for a treat. Plus the on-screen chemistry from Roberts and Clooney is sensational!

‘Ticket to Paradise’ is filmed on location in Queensland, Australia, aided by incentives from the Australian government and from Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

It is set for cinema release nationwide in the UK on October 21st.

ALBUM REVIEW BOOK REVIEW

CHARLIE PUTH – CHARLIE

After a 3-year hiatus Charlie Puth is back with a new album on October 7th and it is set to be a blinder if all accounts are to be believed. It has been worth the wait for album number 3. A press release from Puth’s camp said; “the highly anticipated return promises to be his most personal record to date, with every song authentically representing a piece of himself.”

Always singing from the heart, the Grammy nominee unveiled the official cover and tracklist of his third studio album last week.

Charlie, who is dressed in a white tank and black leather pants, leans on a white cube as the titles of his new songs — as well as mathematical equations and music signs — float over his head.

Among them are his previously released tracks “Light Switch,” “That’s Hilarious” and “Left and Right.” Other new titles include “Loser,” “Charlie B Quiet,” “Shhhhhhhhhhhh…,” “No More Drama,” “First Time For Everything,” “99,” “Metal Bang Whisper Snare,” “Marks on My Neck,” “What If There Was a Song That…” and more.

Charlie revealed; “This album was born on the internet, and I’ve had so much fun making it in front of all of you this past year. 2019 me used to think that in order to be an artist, you had to hide away and talk to nobody to make your art,” he wrote. “Turns out you make MUCH better art when you involve millions of people in the process. (For me at least.)”

He continued, “I hope you scream cry every word when I sing these songs on tour because they wouldn’t be here without you. Thank you.”

We heard a preview in the office and were sold. This is going to be a belter!!

OUR MISSING HEARTS

From Celeste Ng, the number one bestselling author of ‘Little Fires Everywhere,’ comes a deeply suspenseful and heartrending novel about the unbreakable love between a mother and child in a society consumed by fear.

The story of ‘Our Missing Hearts’ centres around twelve-year-old Bird Gardner, who lives a quiet existence with his loving but broken father; a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. Bird knows to not ask too many questions, stand out too much, or stray too far. For a decade, their lives have been governed by laws written to preserve “American culture” in the wake of years of economic instability and violence. To keep the peace and restore prosperity, the authorities are now allowed to relocate children of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin, and libraries have been forced to remove books seen as unpatriotic - including the work of Bird’s mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet who left the family when he was nine years old.

Bird has grown up disavowing his mother and her poems; he doesn’t know her work or what happened to her, and he knows he shouldn’t wonder. But when he receives a mysterious letter containing only a cryptic drawing, he is pulled into a quest to find her. His journey will take him back to the many folktales she poured into his head as a child, through the ranks of an underground network of librarians, into the lives of the children who have been taken, and finally to New York City, where a new act of defiance may be the beginning of much-needed change.

‘Our Missing Hearts’ is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power and limitations of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact.

Thrilling With Jo O’meara

The BRIT Award-winning ‘S Club 7’ star and solo artist Jo O’Meara gets the Halloween celebrations started in spine-tingling fashion as she releases a spooktacular take on Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ to mark the 40th anniversary of the song’s release.

This new version of the song features The Celebs, an all-star line-up which includes Anne Hegerty of ‘The Chase’ performing Vincent Price’s hair-raising role. The song is released in aid of the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity GOSH. Both the song and the accompanying video see Jo and The Celebs in a full-on ‘Thriller’ fright night as night creatures call and the dead start to walk. The frightful fear factory visual features guests including:

- Anne Hegerty - would you rather face The Governess on ‘The Chase’, or stand and face the hounds of hell?

- Bethannie Hare - the rising singer, also known for her role as Cher McQueen in ‘Hollyoaks’.

- Tyger Drew-Honey - the actor and TV personality who has starred in ‘Outnumbered’, ‘Cuckoo’ and ‘Horrid Henry’.

- Ivan Kaye - the towering actor who stars in ‘The Borgias’, ‘Vikings’ and ‘The Green Green Grass’.

- Kathy Hill - the model who memorably played George Michael’s love interest in ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham!

- Faye Barker - the ITN news presenter, reporter and podcast host.

- Verona Rose - presenter of ITV’s ‘Secret Crush’ and Naomi in the Netflix hit ‘Top Boy’.

Jo O’Meara says, “I have always been a huge fan of MJ! ‘Thriller’ is an all-time classic and this year it turns 40. It seems the perfect song for Halloween 2022!”

While Jo and The Celebs enjoyed hours of fun making this new version of ‘Thriller’, their ambition is to raise funds for

GOSH. Each year, GOSH faces an incredible task – to raise millions to support Great Ormond Street Hospital to remain at the forefront of paediatric medicine. Every day, about 600 children and young people from across the UK arrive for lifechanging treatments. And every day, young lives hang in the

balance as patients, families and staff battle the most complex illnesses. The money raised by GOSH helps support their patients and their families through their immensely challenging experiences, and funds research to find the life-saving cures of tomorrow.

The Celebs were formed by music industry executives Grahame and Jack Corbyn, who decided to use their expertise to raise some much-needed funds for some amazing charities

with the help of an array of like-minded stars of the entertainment industry. ‘Thriller’ is their fourth release following the celebpacked singles ‘Rock With Rudolph’ (2018, also benefiting GOSH), ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ (2020, for the Alzheimer’s Society and Action For Children) and ‘Let It Be’ (2021, for Mind).

Surrey Rocks caught up with Jo O’ Meara for an exclusive chat about her upcoming single, album, appearance at SFW and more.

Can you tell us how this wonderful collaboration with ‘The Celebs’ came about?

The collaboration with “The Celebs” is the brainchild of my amazing management team. I was lucky enough to be asked to appear in this latest adventure for the wonderful charity Great Ormand Street. Whilst filming and recording I met Grahame and Jack and we instantly all hit it off, I am now proud to be a part of their wonderful team at Saga Entertainment.

The video shoot day was the funniest day ever! None of us had really met before and suddenly we are dressing up as zombies making quite unusual noises and we giggled all day! I met some amazing people and it was all for a wonderful charity!!

Have you always been a Michael Jackson fan?

I have been a huge fan since I can remember. I think he really was the most phenomenal performer. A complete genius at what he did, and there will never be another MJ! I went to his ‘History’ concert and actually passed out believe it or not! And I’m not ashamed to say it (lol) !!

Does it feel good to be tying up with Great Ormand Street raising money for such a good cause?

It feels amazing to be doing this for such an amazing charity. The work they do is just incredible, and if we can help in some way achieve new trials, more research or more vital equipment, then I think that’s amazing!

How much fun was it creating the ‘Thriller’ video for this single?

We hear you are releasing a new album soon, can you tell or readers more?

Yes! I am beyond excited to be getting back in and writing the next album! I can’t let you know too much info just yet! But it will definitely be worth the wait when it’s released next year.

How is life after S Club 7?

Life is very good. I’m in a really strong place both physically and mentally. I had a slight set back with a back operation recently, but everyday I’m stronger and I’m excited to get back to doing what I love – singing and performing.

Are there any plans for the group reform for a oneoff concert or tour again soon?

This is probably the question I’m asked about the most! And the honest answer is... who knows? There are no plans or talks going on at the moment as everyone is busy doing their own stuff.... but you never know? Watch this space, will let you guys know first!

What was the greatest career highlight being in the group?

There were honestly so many from winning Brits to Worldwide tours! We were very lucky and had so many highlights. Although I think performing for the Queens Golden Jubilee last year will always be one of my most proudest moments. It really was a special day.

What was your favourite S Club 7 track and why? I think one of my favourite S Club songs was ‘All In Love Is Fair’ - I just loved how grown up it was. And at the time the whole vibe was sultry and not as pop as the others so it really stood out. I will also say that ‘Reach For The Stars’ is one of my personal favourites too. It makes people so happy when they hear it. So that’s always going to be up there.

Are you still friends or in touch with the other band members?

We touch base once in a while and see how each other are etc, it’s very hard to see people as we already scattered all over and busy with life! I saw Rachel a few months back, and it was lovely to see her (as always!!)

Does it feel good to be back in the recording studio?

It always feels good to be back in a recording studio! I’ve said many times in the past, to me the studio is home, it’s where I feel the most comfortable and it’s my definite happy place.

If you weren’t a singer what career path would you have chosen?

Oohh that’s a good one! Well... if I had been clever enough I would have been a vet!! But I’m not that clever (lol!) so I would have to say working with animals in some way that doesn’t need the veterinary qualifications!!

Are you looking forward to performing at Surrey Fashion Week’s inaugural event on September 30th at Great Fosters?

I am beyond excited to be performing at SFW 2022! I literally cannot wait! This will be my first show back since my operation so I’m itching to get back on the stage! I might not be doing backflips just yet, given my recent back operation, but the music will be all we need for a fab night.

We also hear you recently carried out a ‘wing walk’ in aid of dog rescue charity K-9, how did that go?

Yes the wing walk... ha ha! That was an experience that I will certainly not forget in a hurry! I was petrified from the very beginning and it’s not my kind of thing as I’m not great with speed or heights! Or anything remotely scary really! But I did it for the dogs. It was all to help raise awareness and be a voice for the voiceless!! It’s something I’m very passionate about.

Kris James On Tour With Will Young!

Described as ‘the one to watch’ by Music Week, South West London-based singer/songwriter Kris James has been a singer ‘since birth’. His story is the compelling tale of the determined underdog, undertaking an uphill journey to get to this point in time.

From romantic to band break-ups, emotional turbulence and more, James’ perseverance as an artist has always shone through, and last year, he was ready to reap the rewards, having finally released his debut self-titled solo album, announcing to the world that he has arrived…

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 1434
With FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14 35
FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 1436

As an artist, he has chameleon-like approach to pop music. Constantly looking and hoping for more, even during the darkest days, Kris’s catchy pop songs have had themes of toxic masculinity, anxiety, and honesty in romance peppering his uniquely sophisticated hooks and harmonies - ensuring we have something to dance to and think about at the same time.

Celebrity Journalist Angela Sara West @angela_sara_west chats with Kris about his personal and introspective tracks on self-titled album, his brand-new luxury, sustainable menswear brand which has featured in Vogue, his new single and going on tour with Will Young!

Congratulations on making that triumphant first step as a solo artist! Your approach to album writing is refreshingly sincere… Thank you! It felt amazing to have the album out. I’ve been sitting on it for a while, waiting for the right time to release it. Getting it out there was like a leap of faith, but it was one that paid off. The response has been incredible… I’m blown away…

The dissolution of your band The Scheme left you free to follow your creative spark, which was formerly being curtailed by boy band etiquette. And recording the song you had written for the band as a solo artist instead, ‘Eyes Open’ went straight into the UK Top 30! What a testament to your staying power…

When I pick up an album, I want to love the whole thing, not just tracks one, four and eight. My mindset whilst writing was that if this proves to be the last thing I ever release, I want it to be a definitive statement; to be the best it can be. Each song on this album has all come from real life situations that I have been in, usually when I’m happy, sad, in or out of love.

Tell me a little about ‘Dreamer’, your focus track, in which you pitch yourself as a hopeless romantic in the Dragons-inspired song…

‘Dreamer’ is a moody and cathartic break-up anthem, which is about never really getting over that one person who you thought you would be with forever. Always thinking and going back to the good times, dreaming of when times were amazing and you BOTH thought it would be forever… It’s a first love experience once again. But for me, I’m always as mad about the first love as I am my last. I’m always writing about breakups and love!

If you could give any person in the world a gift, who would you give what to and why?

I’d love to give Lil Naz X a hug - his music is amazing and he’s doing incredible things for LGBT+ rights and awareness! He was one of my most-played artists last year…

Beyond your music endeavours, you’re the founder of Amanzzo, a sustainable menswear brand which has featured in Vogue magazine…

Yes, last year I launched Amanzzo’s debut collection of swimwear, produced using recycled and repurposed materials such as ECONYL. Aware of the impacts of fast fashion and plastics on our oceans, I aim to deliver luxury quality at affordable prices, and prioritise sustainability at every avenue, from production through to packaging and shipment without compromising on style or quality.

As a SW London resident, what do you love the most about Wimbledon?

Wimbledon is just gorgeous! I love all the cosy pubs and places to walk on The Common.

What would be your message of hope to Rocks Mag readers, following such turbulent times with the pandemic?

To be kind to yourself. It could look like having a little bit extra chocolate on a day you’re feeling down, going on a walk or taking time out to read a book instead of constantly socialising. Whatever it is, do it and don’t guilt trip yourself about it.

Finally, what’s next for Kris James? I’m already writing so much more new music. Stay tuned!

Kris James’ debut album is out now: www.krisjamesmusic.com

His next single is set for release on October 7th, coinciding with the Will Young Tour.

Personality Types –

When you go to the supermarket, do you bring a list and work through it one item at a time, or do you decide what you want when you get there based on how you’re feeling that day? Perhaps you choose your food by visualising what you want to cook that night, or maybe by working out what will get you in and out of the shops quickest by spending as little money as possible? The answer to this question lies with your personality type.

The Benziger Theory

FEATURES SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14 43

Understanding your brain dominance can help you work out your strengths and weaknesses and generally assist you in becoming as fulfilled as you can be. There are plenty of personality assessments, each with a unique way of looking at your identity. One personality assessment to consider is the Benziger Thinking Styles Assessment, created by Katherine Benziger. This model splits the brain into four categories, each responsible for different behaviours and strengths. These four categories, known as modes, are basal left, basal right, frontal right, and frontal left. Most of us can dip into each of these modes; however, there will almost always be a combination that comes more naturally. When you know your brain type, one of the things you can do is become better at selecting your friends, as we often choose people who mirror our personality, and when choosing a partner, we are most likely to choose someone who will complement our brain type and disguise our weaknesses. Let’s explore each brain dominance and find out which is most similar to you!

Basal Left

If you love routine and find yourself voluntarily doing the same things every day, in the same order, and for roughly the same amount of time, you are likely a basal left. Basal lefts like predictability and being able to control the time it takes to do something. There are great values to this procedural way of thinking, as you can let your brain do its thing automatically while you focus on other projects that need your attention. People can always count on a basal left to be productive and dependable. You know someone in your life is a basal left if you often hear them say phrases like ‘Let’s play it safe’, and ‘The instructions say…’. However, there are disadvantages to this mode, as it is not easy for basal lefts to accept unexpected interruptions. When something unpredictable happens, and a basal left can’t control their surroundings anymore, they can often become confused and find it difficult to be as decisive as usual. Nonetheless, basal lefts have a great ability to follow instructions, organise themselves, and establish good habits that will last them a lifetime.

Basal Right

If you find yourself constantly striving to create a harmonious environment around you and feeling a strong empathy for those who are going through a difficult time, you are most likely a basal right. Basal rights are affectionate and want to help as many people as possible. They can easily adapt to the people they are with and often prefer to communicate through singing, dancing, and touching. Basal rights also respond well to disharmony, as when they see someone upset, they

find it easy to offer words of comfort and provide a kind touch. As a basal right, you prefer to interact with others face to face and regularly. People often see basal right abilities as magical, as it can seem like they are reading people’s minds, but to this brain dominance, understanding emotions comes naturally to them. As with every personality type, there are disadvantages to this mode. Basal rights often feel emotions so deeply that it can overwhelm them, making it difficult to be productive and do general day-to-day tasks. Despite this, basal rights have the ability to connect with people and empathise.

Frontal Right

Do you find yourself continuously using your creativity and looking to the future? Would you say you have an active imagination and enjoy expressing yourself? If the answer to these questions is yes, you are likely a frontal right! To frontal rights, life is like a game of Tetris; they’re constantly visualising the best outcomes and are ready to put them into practice, even if it doesn’t turn out perfectly the first go. Frontal rights have their own way of organising their lives; while some people like an efficient way of getting to their documents, this brain dominance likes to file their work in a way that suits them and only them. They are rule-breakers and are known for their quirky sense of humour. However, there are difficulties with this mode, as frontal rights find it extremely challenging to come back down to reality once they’ve allowed their head to reach the clouds and find focussing on a task tough when they have been working on it for a while. Nevertheless, frontal rights are incredible visionaries and can always see the bigger picture.

Frontal Left

If you love analysing details and thinking through situations logically, you are most likely a frontal left. People with this brain dominance prioritise the quickest and easiest solutions and like to use mathematics to solve problems. Frontal lefts love results and strive to create rational outcomes that suit the most sensible people. When this brain type looks at an object or situation, they have the ability to break it down into small parts in their mind and figure out its strengths and weaknesses. Frontal lefts are often very dry in how they communicate and like to tell people the results of their thinking, for example, the decisions they have made. They see themselves as strong leaders and capable decision-makers. However, others sometimes see them as uncaring and critical. Nevertheless, frontal lefts are incredible at staying on track and analysing critical situations.

Afternoon tea at the Great Fosters estate is an elegant affair indeed... From delicate bavarois to moreish eclairs, the changing array of fancies are always delicious, and are served alongside warm scones and an exquisite selection of sandwiches. Great Fosters is also the perfect destination to celebrate this festive season with fantastic food, plenty of real log fires and the most glorious decorations. HAIR STYLE

The last month has been full of fashion week. Backstage, presentations and editorial shoots all help us stay ahead of trends. Each season, my art team and I work at a selection of shows across London, Paris and Milan fashion week. This year we have assisted at Burberry, Dior, Loewe, Valentino and Mia Miu, to name a few. We love to be at the forefront

of fashion, involved in creating briefs and translating these into trends that work in the salons. One key look that caught my eye is the low side parting. This works best when the hair is sleek as seen in Erdem in London and Tommy Hilfiger in New York. You’ll need a good hair oil, such as the Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing oil and a pin comb to get the parting perfectly straight.

STYLE

1. HEALTHY HAIR

Hot List

At London Fashion Week models, press and celebrities had one thing in common. Sleek, healthy hair. There are many variations - but the key words are neat, glossy and simple.

2. BLOW-DRY SKILLS

Volume, sleek or movement, perfecting your blow-dry is a skill worth developing. Having the right tools is crucial and the BaByliss Italia hairdryer is a must. We’re giving away one this month through our Instagram, along with a salon blow-dry and treatment so make sure you’re following us for details on how to enter.

@hareandbone

3. REPEATING THE SAME STYLE ALWAYS

Not for us. Even though you love the style, during each appointment we will keep your hair fresh by the subtlest of changes.

5. ROOTS

Some colour techniques may create the illusion of roots, but grownout colour is a no go. Book that appointment now.

4. FRIZZ

No thanks. The change in weather can cause frizz, especially if you didn’t protect from the sun during summer. Applying Oribe’s Straight Away Smoothing Blowout cream protects against heat and humidity for super sleek strands that still have body and movement. Blow dries become quicker and more manageable.

NewsHARE & BONE was built on celebrating individuality. Honouring our values of honesty, integrity and inclusivity we have made the decision to move our services to a gender neutral menu.

Discussion groups with clients and team members have taken place over the summer months to shape a gender neutral menu that works for all.

From October, our price menu will be built around time and experience, not gender. By doing so we can continue to create an environment that is inclusive and celebrates equality.

The celebrations also continue in our Esher salon, as we approach our 4th birthday. It’s been a magical four years and it wouldn’t have been as much fun without our wonderful clients and community. To mark the occasion, we are offering a blow dry and indulgent Dual Sense Treatment, including a complimenting glass of Prosecco for £39. This celebration will be available from 11th - 15th October with selected stylists.

Q&A

1. I’ve spent the last year growing out my fringe but I miss it. Should I get it cut back in or hang onto the length a little longer?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked in the salon. To fringe or not to fringe. Without knowing your face shape it is hard to comment on what would suit you best, but considering you’ve just grown one out I’m assuming your stylist will have cut the most flattering option. Rather than committing to a full fringe, why not try the 90’s bangs for the winter season. This is two pieces of jaw-length hair that frame the face beautifully, but can also be tucked behind the ear or included in a topknot if you prefer to remove the fringe completely. They offer the perfect middle-ground without the commitment of a full fringe.

2. I’m currently going through the perimenopause and noticed an impact with my skin. Should I be concerned about my hair and if so, what can I do to prevent changes?

Hormonal changes will always produce a level of impact on your hair. For some, it will be minimal but for others going through the peri menopause or menopause the change could be big. Estrogen and progesterone keep the hair in the growing phase, making it grow faster. However, when these levels decline, hair growth slows and hair loss can occur. Hair might become dull, dry and thinner but there are products that can help. Using a scalp product will help regrowth and strengthen the hair, while Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray will help hair expand to your absolute fullest whilst enduring lift and hold. If texture is causing concern then a keratin blow-dry will transform hair, leaving it manageable and smooth. The professional service is long-lasting and if the recommended home haircare products are used it can last up to 5 months. Your stylist will know your hair, and the best way to care for it. Speak to them about your concerns and they will prescribe the best products for you.

WHERE ART

PDO Thread lifting is the key to beautiful elegant tight skin. Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Eva Mendes & Angelina Jolie are just some of the celebrity fans of PDO threads and is widely considered as the best defence against ageing. Collagen and elastin are what keeps our skin youthful & tight. Unfortunately, as we age, the rate of collagen renewal decreases. This causes the skin to lose that youthful tenacity. The skin begins to sag and becomes crepey, with often a loss of volume and wrinkles that make us look older. This revolutionary treatment is redefining aesthetics.

ART MEETS SCIENCE

THE MAGIC OF THREADS

A thread lift is a procedure that uses dissolvable sutures to tighten, lift, define , contour and add or decrease volume where needed. PDO threads also bio-stimulate. They cause the body to produce additional collagen, elastin and fibroblasts over the treatment area which rejuvenates the skin. The threads used are made of medical-grade polydioxanone (PDO), an extremely safe material that has been used in surgery for many years and dissolves over time.

THE EQ LIFT

I have designed a protocol for those looking for a non-surgical PDO facelift or body treatment with amazing results. My passion for PDO threads is unrivalled. Initially I trained in threads under a maxillofacial surgeon and have since trained with some of the best doctors in the world. I have perfected my own signature techniques that deliver the most spectacular results known as the ‘EQ lift’. The EQ lift is the perfect alternative to a surgical facelift for anyone who wants to sculpt & define or benefit from a lifted, more youthful appearance. PDO threads are the most groundbreaking development in anti-ageing. What we can achieve with these threads is truly phenomenal. From lifting, rejuvenation, creating structure and volume to all over body tightening! I believe I can make most people look at least 10 years younger as well as refreshed, balanced and beautified.

I give each client natural & elegant looking results using the principals of profile balancing. In addition to lifting & restructuring my clients look tighter, younger, glowy and rejuvenated.

WHY CHOOSE PDO THREADS?

-It’s safe & effective.

-It’s a less invasive procedure than surgery.

-It bio-stimulates the skin using your own natural collagen.

-Performed using local anaesthetic so virtually pain free with no downtime. You can drive home after the procedure.

-The results are natural looking, elegant looking but impressive. It’s a great alternative to dermal fillers & other procedures that often change a persons features.

Here we are really working on the integrity of the skin and enhancing your own natural beauty.

-The results are immediate but get better over time with the effects lasting up to 2 years.

-It is a powerful preventative tool to slow down ageing.

-Threads can often be used to correct asymmetry whether natural or as a result of birth, paralysis, accident or injury.

-Threads can be used to improve pigmentation and scar tissue.

PROPERTY OF THE MONTH

Situated in Walton-on-Thames and perfectly located on the west side of this desirable development in The Heart is this stunning top floor apartment with lift access.

It comprises of two spacious double bedrooms with far reaching views, with the main bedroom featuring an ensuite bathroom and built-in wardrobes. There is a further modern family bathroom equipped with Hansgrohe fittings, and a modern open plan kitchen / dining / sitting room offering a flexible entertaining space with the kitchen featuring integrated Neff appliances, all presented in immaculate condition throughout.

Off the open-plan entertaining space opens a private west facing balcony with incredible panoramic views. As a place to sit outside in the evening and to look across to the west to Heathrow, the Wembley arch and Windsor Castle, it’s a fantastic benefit which has been enjoyed by the current owners for many years.

The property boasts a long lease in excess of 220 years, lift access to all floors and benefits from an allocated underground parking space along with use of two delightful

communal gardens. A concierge service operates seven days a week, allowing parcels to be collected on your behalf and security monitored daily.

The Heart development was built in 2007 and sits in the centre of Walton-on-Thames just moments form the coffee shops, cafes, Sainsburys supermarket, the cinema and the River Thames.

Listed with Doug Parks, Director of Property Nest Elmbridge, he recommends this property wholeheartedly to first time buyers – as they can benefit from zero stamp duty thanks to the latest government incentives introduced on Friday 23rd September under Liz Truss.

‘The cost of living crises has been discussed constantly for the past few months and will no doubt still be an issue for many businesses and families. However, in Elmbridge the market is still strong with the desire to own a property still high on the priority list for many people, and with the recent reduction in stamp duty sure to help first time buyers and those at the lower end of the market. This is a perfect first time buyer investment property.’

HOW TO MAKE

NEW SEASON, NEW RENOVATIONS

We are entering a new season, one of my favourites actually, Autumn. The season of crunchy leaves, chunky throws, snuggly fires and warm candlelight. Autumn also brings a mindset change, long, sun-drenched days are gone and we are focused and ready for something new and for a lot of us that change means home renovating.

Sadie Pizzey

Sadie Pizzey Interiors is a full-service design firm based in Guildford. SP Interiors works on both residential and commercial projects and has recently been shortlisted for The International Design and Architecture Awards. Sadie designs with practical knowledge gained from extensive renovation experience. Her exceptional organisation and project management skills mean she keeps projects running to time and budget, developing innovative schemes and beautiful spaces to inspire clients. Sadie’s philosophy is: “We need our homes to be our battery chargers, to help us re-build and recover from everything that life throws at us. Designing spaces that embrace this, will dramatically improve our quality of life”.

www.sadiepizzeyinteriors.com

Now I jump at the chance to renovate a home, obviously, I’m an interior designer. But a lot of my clients feel overwhelmed by the daunting task to get this change right. Most of our clients don’t want a cookie cutter home, they want something unique, special, that represents them and gives them that blanket of warmth and happiness whenever they enter their home.

Obviously, there are so many ways we layer up our designs to create these one-of-a-kind homes, but one part of the design that can really make our homes stand out from the crowd, is the unique finishes we select and how we use them.

BACK TO BASICS

Now unfortunately this doesn’t happen without a lot of prep work in the early stages. It will come as no surprise that the first part of this journey of creation, is the floor plan. Now you may wonder how creating the floor plan is going to help me create a sensation material palette for a home, but it does and I’ll use an example to show you why.

For one of our current Guildford projects, we were brought in to work on the spatial planning right at the beginning. This is the ideal start of a project for us, because we can adapt and tailor the floor plan to suit the interior design for the home before it even goes off to planning. For this particular home, it was a very tricky layout of creating a large boot room, pantry, breakfast cupboard and drinks cupboard all within a tight space. The solution to the floor plan resulted in multiple doorways in a row, which presented us with a design challenge! No one wants to look at a wall of lots of boring doors; nothing ruins a design more that some painted white doors off a painted white kitchen wall. After a lot of thought we came up with the solution which was to select an incredible finish and clad the entire wall and all doors (to hide them into the wall) in the same material. We also had another challenge with the space, which was noise, we needed materials that would help absorb the echo that comes from large spaces. The material solution we selected to help combat both challenges was cork. Not only incredibly beautiful, but also a great noise reducer. You can see from our floor plan to concept how we landed on this decision and designed it for our clients, who absolutely loved it.

HOME & INTERIORS

MAKE YOUR HOME UNIQUE

INHERITED FEATURES

For our projects where we are adapting a current house, opposed to new renovation we can often inherit some features that come with the home. Now if it is beautiful panelling, decorative cornicing or a fantastic ceiling rose we gladly welcome this feature and it is carefully considered in the colour scheme to ensure we highlight its beauty and form.

For our ‘Devon Project’ the barns exterior walls were stone, so when we extended the property to create a new kitchen, these stone walls became an interior wall. Now we could have boarded, plastered and painted them but what a waste?! Instead, we kept them exposed, gently rounded off the edge with lime plaster and lit them to really highlight their beauty.

FEATURE FINISHES

Feature finishes is something we talk about with our clients a lot. In the example above obviously the cork was very much a featured finish. Another finish we love to work with is wood. Our design firm loves the use of timber for the right client and project.

We love wood for the grain and texture it brings to the home but also the colour range and depth are so versatile that it can really vamp up or tone down a concept. With the need to be connected to nature at all-time high, timber also adds to a biophilic design. There is so much research that shows the more materials connected to nature we have in our homes the calmer and happier we feel in our day to day lives.

Now the obvious place for wood is on the floor and we do use it a lot in our projects, anything from light, limed oaks, to rich, inviting walnuts, it completely transforms a space. To create a more surprising moment in a home we also like to use it to cover entire walls, ceilings and doors.

HOME & INTERIORS
SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14 113

Sometimes we inherit features that most definitely need to be removed, it doesn’t matter what you do artex ceiling –it is never going to be a thing of beauty in your home.

But what to do with the features you inherit but you can’t get rid of? Ceiling beams can often be a tricky design element to get right. In some of our older properties low beams are part of the building, they are structural and if you fill them in you create even lower ceilings. In this project we sand-blasted and lime washed the beams transforming the heavy ceiling to something light and beautiful.

OUT THERE FINISHES

For the braver renovator there are some alternative, very unique finishes that will really zing in your home.

Liquid metal is a finish we love to use in the right place. We have used a copper liquid metal against a rich, blue cabinetry and we are featuring a bronze, liquid metal on a curved breakfast bar at a current residential project. Stunning.

An out there finish can also take an offthe-shelf item to another level. We added gold leaf panels to these pax wardrobe doors, teamed with gold leaf inside the joinery for the shoe display. The lighting elevates them and the unique finish takes them from mediocre to sensational.

METAL

Now this gets its own heading and that’s because every home in some way has this material. Whether it’s just your taps, or switches and sockets or if you use it on a bigger scale, it’s going to feature and it needs to be considered.

Firstly, no matter how you choose to use it consistency is the key. In our projects we will design our key metal finishes to all tie-in together. For example, if we select a bronze kitchen handle, then we will often use the same finishes on the switches and sockets. It doesn’t mean a different metal can’t feature but they need to work together and ideally no more than two finishes should feature in your home.

Now it will come as no surprise that in some of our projects we really embrace our use of metals to feature heavily in our design scheme.

A simple porcelain kitchen is brought to life with a copper splash back in a custom finish.

Cooker hoods are another place to embrace a beautiful patinated metal or in this project we opted for a patinated pewter which plays off fantastically against the rustic timber units.

HOME & INTERIORS SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14114

PAIRED BACK FINISHES

Now not all finishes need to be strong and vibrant, the paired back finish can often be more suited to a project or client or is used to contrast some other bold design choices.

Paint although simple is still a transformative finish, the colour ranges are huge and now we have the addition of texture with the surge towards lime wash paints.

For this project we chose a lime wash paint to bring some gentle movement to our very paired back scheme, it captivates you without even knowing how.

Tiles are another way to add that extra layer to a space without necessarily going bold with colour. The texture and shapes that tile companies create are incredible and can really impact your finished room.

HOW TO MAKE SURE IT WORKS TOGETHER

The use of unique features requires thought and skill in a project, selecting the levels of strength and paired back finishes are not something you can choose on a whim. For our company it is part of a process, from floor plans, to concepts to sample boards, the stages of our process allow us to create and balance our material palette to ensure an amazing result.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

RESTAURANT

OUR EXPERIENCE

We were greeted by the friendly General Manager Mark who made us feel instantly welcome. He explained the ‘Sharing Plate’ concept that the restaurant is famed for so we could order a try a multitude of dishes. And then the all-important Cocktail List; with an abundance of choice from a classic ‘Negroni’ to a timeless ‘Old Fashioned’ to a retro ‘Pina Colada’ there is indeed something for everyone.

We went for a ‘Watermelon and Coconut Daiquiri’ made with Plantation 3 Star Rum, Malibu, Lime and Watermelon and the ‘Cosmopolitan’ was concocted with Grey Goose Le Citron Vodka, Cointreau, Cranberry and Lime – both were devine and presented beautifully.

Another great thing about 63rd + 1st is their staff have a passion for cocktail making and can answer any questions you may have about their extensive menus.

We quizzed Mark and he was extremely helpful! Justyna the manager we met on another trip back (you will be

going back!) was also amazing – a great, fun, vibrant team that have a genuine passion for the business and five star customer service.

Next up was sampling the tremendous 63rd + 1st Food Menu. Separated into Sections including ‘While You Wait’,

‘Hand Helds’ ‘Sharers & Salads’ and ‘Robata Grill’ there was so much choice but not too vast it didn’t overwhelm us!

We opted for the ‘King Prawns Pil Pil’ which came with a deliciously tangy, spicy sauce and 5 large succulent king prawns, the ‘Plant Based Chicken Taco’ with rainbow coleslaw and a chilli pineapple salsa and side of the tastiest ‘Loaded Fries’ with chipotle mayo and crispy onions. Another fab dish was the ‘Jammy Chicken Lollipops’ with chilli jam and the ‘63rd + 1st Burger’, a 100% prime beef steak patty with lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese and crispy onions – was to die for.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14124

We loved the sharing plate concept at this fabulous and fun restaurant. We are definitely coming back as it is a necessity to cross a few more dishes off our wish list including the ‘Mozzarella Corn Dog’, ‘Lobster & Shrimp Thermidor Roll’ and one of the famous ‘63rd + 1st Steak’ options.

MUM’S LIFE

SHOW MUST GO ON

As our late Queen said, “When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future.”

And so, the show must go on, no matter what hardships we are facing, stay strong, seek support from your friends and family and get the help that you need to keep going.

These words of wisdom, especially applies to us Mums, with a billion things on our to-do list - it can seem overwhelming. The latter part of the year is a really busy time of year for me, so I am taking each day as it comes, working through my to do list. Even if I manage one or two tasks,

I’ve realised that that’s ok.

Autumn is undoubtedly my favourite season. The scenery is spectacular and so atmospheric; the burnt orange leaves, pumpkin spiced lattes (with oat milk), Halloween fun and the many upcoming birthdays.

First and foremost, I’ve got my son’s 5th Birthday party to plan. When going through the school year group contact list of course he said he wanted to invite every single person, he simply couldn’t pick and choose. I don’t know if I am really proud or filled with dread at the thought of 35 screaming kids in Halloween fancy dress! All jokes aside we are very lucky that he has such lovely year group, and I am

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14 131

even luckier for having such wonderful Mum friends that I look forward to catching up with at pick up and drop off and the odd night out (which was a Mums on the loose situation and shall never be spoken about again!)

FRIGHT NIGHT

Next is Halloween. I love to decorate the house with things that are fun but still tasteful. I have found that the best place for ornamental decorations is TK Max! I’ve always loved a bit of TK Max but I feel like each year they are getting more and more stock of Halloween items and it really excites me. Of course, you need to go now because by mid-October a lot of the stock is already gone. It can be overwhelming trying to find things to do in the holidays. Parents and grandparents fear not, I am going to share with you my top tried and tested places to take the kids this October half term:

1) Priory Farm tractor ride. £5 per person. Take a tractor ride to the Pumpkin Fields and pluck your very own gourd from the ground.

2) Priory Farm Halloween trail. £8 per person. Venture along

the Halloween themed walk through ancient woodland, green pastures and meadows surrounding a fishing lake. This walk takes approximately 1 hour and is a little on the bumpy side if you have a pram so I would reconsider if you are going with very little ones. You can do either of the above or both. We have booked to do both for an extra spooky day!

3) Crockford Bridge Farm Pumpkin Festival. £8 over age 1, £2 under 1. This is a super fun day with pumpkin carving and decorating, entertainers, instagrammable photo opportunites and food vendors.

4) Pumpkin picking at Garsons. Adults £4, children £1. The booking value is deducted from the crops you pick so it’s basically free! It’s set up in a great way which enables you to drive through to the PYO area where there is not only a pumpkin area but other areas of seasonal vegetables. The café is one of the best Garden Centre Café I have been to in Surrey.

I would recommend to get booked asap as these events usually sell out fast. Whatever you get up to this Halloween, have a Spooktacular time!

DEALING WITH

WITH BREAK-UPS

As we come into a new month, I have had an influx of messages off the back of The Queen’s passing away. For many it seemed to bring up lots of trauma and grief that people were holding on to and some didn’t even realise it was still there.

A loss of a relationship is similar to a death.

The person that was your person is gone. The person who you would call in good times and bad is no longer at the end of the phone. All your future dreams and plans with that person are in shatters and a lot of the time you share mutual friends and it’s hard to get used to a new way of life without that support system.

If you are struggling with any kind of break-up, breakdown or grief please remember you are not alone.

There are different stages of a break-up; upset, depression, healing, motivation to move on and you have to go through each one to come out the other side and move on.

Please remember it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to scream, it’s ok to spend a day in bed wallowing, its ok to eat junk food for a weekend and it’s ok to feel all of our feelings.

You will get over this; but you have to give yourself and your heart the time to heal. Once you have passed the upset and depression stage - the best advice I can give you is to keep busy.

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14 135

Once you have cried all the tears of a river and are all cried out it’s time to get busy living.

Now I don’t mean dating. If you are struggling, I suggest you give yourself a 6 month break from dating altogether.

But it’s time to get busy living. Before you say “I’m already busy so not sure I can fit anything else in” I am not talking boring busy. I am talking about fulfilling busy. If you don’t have time to meditate, workout, practice selfcare then I’m telling you that you need to do it more than ever. A busy life doing mundane things will exhaust you. Busy doing things you enjoy, will energise you.

This is a time to strip back to find out who you really are and what you really enjoy as a new singleton. So firstly, I would like you to write a list of the things you have always wanted to do.

Learn a language

Learn an instrument

Go to a knitting class

Join a football club, all of the above if you are feeling adventurous.

Doing something on a weekly basis that is purely for you will make you feel empowered and shine a light on your happiness and when you are ready to date again imagine how interesting you will be and all the fun stories you can tell.

Break-ups are tough, but you are tougher and I hope the tears of your break-up water are the seeds of your future happiness.

OCTOBER Tarot Reading

Let’s find out what OCTOBER will bring for you!

Oracle Card

There are many different types of oracle decks out there, each with their own message to share. Every deck you find will enhance your tarot reading, allowing your reader to dive deeper into what is going on in your life at that moment. Your oracle card for October is ‘Scorpio’! You may already know that Scorpios are incredibly mysterious people who often veer towards the intense side of life. Receiving this card for October (aka the beginning of Scorpio season) is a sign to dive down and explore the most intimate parts of your soul. Get rid of any assumptions and question everything. There is almost always something beneath the surface, and Scorpios are known to be great investigators. Don’t let your own concerns stop you from transforming into the person you are meant to be.

The Hermit

Your main card for October is The Hermit, and with three major arcana cards in your reading, it is going to be an important month. It is clear from both The Hermit and the ‘Scorpio’ oracle card that October is going to be a month of soul-searching and introspection. Know that it’s okay to be alone, as sometimes the best moments in life happen when you are happy with your own company. Listen to your own inner guidance and trust your intuition. No one knows what you want better than you, so listen to your own thoughts and feelings before you ask for anyone else’s opinions on your life. Embrace your hermit side and enjoy the alone time making its way to you. Solitude can put many problems into perspective.

The Star

The Star is one of the most beautiful cards in the tarot deck! It is a clear message to have hope and know that everything is going to work out okay. Times may sometimes be difficult, but one thing to never give up on is faith. Have faith that life will sort itself out and know you have control over what you want to do. You have a purpose in your life that is unique to you, so if you ever feel lost or hopeless, remember your wishes and goals. This month is going to bring a sense of renewal to your life. September may have been full of interruptions, whereas October is going to be a lot more fast-paced.

The Emperor

Authority is something to keep in mind this month, as The Emperor is showing that you are going to be put in a position where you have to give orders and make decisions that may affect other people. You will also be given the opportunity to establish something new in terms of your work life. These three cards together show that October is going to be an extremely focused month, full of hope, contemplation, and attention to detail. Don’t lose faith if things don’t turn out the way you had hoped; there is always a solution to every problem.

Your october Astrology Forecast from Pia Louisa OCTOBER 2022

Aries

21 MAR – 20 APR

October is going to be a month full of courage Aries. You now know what you must do in order to succeed and are using your bold spirit to get you far. Love is clearly going to play a huge part in your life this month, with you spending time with people that care for you deeply and want to see you be the best version of yourself. There is strong respect and adoration surrounding you. Finally, an abundance of happiness will be making its way to you at the end of the month, as since your ruling planet is Mars (planet of action, strength, and assertion) you are more inclined than anyone to find true joy when accomplishing a task.

Taurus

21 APR – 20 MAY

Do you have a difficult decision to make Taurus? If the answer to this question is yes, then it is time to buckle down and sort this issue out head-on. As your ruling planet is Venus (planet of love, pleasure, and beauty), it is likely you favour a kinder approach to making decisions, based on how you feel as opposed to how you think. There is clear movement in October, and you will be making big strides when it comes to accomplishing your goals. Set your plans in motion and start the next chapter of your life. You are a natural-born leader and will be spending lots of your time making sure everyone’s voices are heard. You have a talent for finding the magic in normal life.

Hot Stars!

Gemini

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

It seems that conflicts and disagreements have put a damper on plans you have made lately Gemini, and tension is still in the air. Don’t let other people’s fights put a pause on your own life. Work out whether this conflict actually involves you and figure out your next step from there. An apprenticeship of sorts is making its way into your life, whether that be you training for a new job, or training someone else. Nonetheless, get ready to feel like a student again and learn a new skill you thought you’d never have to use! A good education can be the most powerful tool to have. Finally, you may start to notice a few things coming to an end this month, but don’t fret, these are only things that no longer have purpose in your life.

Cancer

22 JUNE – 23 JULY

Are new ideas suddenly appearing in your head Cancerian? This would make great sense, as recent planetary alignments show a fresh start for you in October, full of new thoughts and possibilities. Your compassionate nature is coming through strong this month, as your ruling planet is the Moon (planet of protection, emotions, and instinct) which makes you the star sign of listening to your heart and nurturing those around you. As a Cancerian, you are the mother of the zodiac, with Leos being the father, therefore will make sure everyone is accounted and cared for. Make sure not to let your anxiety get the better of you in the weeks to come, as you have a tendency to allow your emotions to take over. Don’t worry, everything will work out fine.

Leo

24 JULY – 23 AUG

Pause Leo. Stop your racing mind for a moment and truly think about your next step. Don’t be too impulsive and remember to sleep on your thoughts. Wait for the right moment to step into action, as sometimes the best decisions come when we have allowed them to breathe. Once you do this, your mental clarity will be at its best, and you will be able to better connect with your ruling planet the Sun (planet of identity, power, and purpose). Establish your authority within your workplace and home and demand the respect that you have clearly earned. You have the power, so don’t let anyone make you feel less than you are. Planetary alignments show October as being a month you explore your life with a new approach.

Virgo

24 AUG – SEPT 3

Spiritual wisdom is going to play a huge role in your October Virgo, as you are likely to explore your holistic side by reaching out to people and places that will help you on your journey. Being spiritual doesn’t necessarily mean being religious (although it can), as spirituality is all about connecting with your soul and believing in something bigger than yourself. Any financial losses that you may have recently suffered will soon begin to heal, although you must remember to carry on working hard and focussing on what you truly need as opposed to want. When looking at finances, embrace your ruling planet of Mercury and communicate openly to those involved, exchange ideas, and learn what they have to teach you.

Libra

24 SEPT – 23 OCT

Happy birthday Libra! What shows for you first is multiple priorities taking up your time. You may not know where your energy is best put to use and are finding it difficult to juggle responsibilities. Diversify as many areas as you can and clearly set them apart from each other so you can define your jobs easily. Your ambitious nature is coming out strong this month, as shown by all the different work opportunities you are bringing on board! Channel your ruling planet Venus (planet of love, beauty, and pleasure) and combine your ambition with a delicate touch in order to attract as many people to you as possible. A sudden change is likely to hit you at the end of the month, but don’t worry, it’s nothing you can’t handle.

SCORPIO

24 OCT – 22 NOV

Do you sometimes feel like your long-term view of your life is just one big blur? If the answer is yes, don’t fret Scorpio, as this is completely normal, especially for your zodiac sign. Having Pluto (planet of power, secrets, and transformation) as one of your ruling planets, you are likely to always be questioning life’s biggest mysterious and keeping in touch with your own intensity.

Have faith in knowing that big breakthroughs are making their way to you and will advance you straight to the next chapter of your life. Finally, there will be many celebrations for you in October, so make sure to cut loose and enjoy these fabulous moments. Allow your watery element to guide you and lead with your heart.

Sagittarius

23 NOV – 21 DEC

Is inspiration hitting you at unexpected moments Sagittarius?

The answer to this question is likely yes, as new ideas are making their way to you during the month of October. Creative opportunities are going to keep you busy and allow you to tap into your imaginative and quirky side. Let your artistic spirit take over and push you to become an even better version of yourself. There may be a few extra burdens to deal with this month, but with hard work and commitment, you will be able to handle them with no problem.

As your ruling planet is Jupiter (planet of growth, enthusiasm, and opportunity), you are likely to deal with any problems by looking for the life lessons within them and learning from any past mistakes you may have made.

Capricorn

22 DEC – 20 JAN

Are you giving even more of yourself to others than usual Capricorn? During the month of October, you are likely to find that many people want to see you and it may become a bit too much. Pick and choose who you want to spend time with and remember your worth. Bestow your presence onto people who truly deserve it! As a very independent person, you value knowing that you got to where you are through hard-work and dedication and feel liberated when you know you don’t owe anyone for your success. Be proud of where you are now and don’t forget to look back and see how far you have come. In contradiction to your independence, teamwork is likely to play a big role this month with lots of people working with you to achieve a common goal.

Aquarius

21 JAN – 19 FEB

October is going to be full of beginnings for you Aquarius! As you are co-ruled by Uranus (planet of change, rebelliousness, and liberation), your life is always going to be filled with new inventions, radical thoughts, and unconventional methods. You are likely to find yourself connecting with your feminine side this month and being gentler and calmer with those around you. This doesn’t necessarily mean doing girly activities but embracing the strengths of women everywhere. Painful endings may occur at the end of the month but know that sometimes you have to give something up in order to create room for better things to enter your life. Allow your air element to take over and keep your thoughts focussed and insightful.

Pisces

20 FEB – 20 MAR

Saving money is going to be a big part of your October Pisces. If you have been worried about your finances, you are now ready to make the changes needed to keep on top of your material life. Redeem yourself from possible past mistakes and show everyone how responsible you have become. Your nurturing side is coming though strong this month and you are likely to favour a low-maintenance lifestyle, solely focussing on taking care of the people you love through talking through their emotions and comforting them. Your control over your life is better than it has ever been, as you are able to command what you want and demand the respect you deserve. Planetary alignments are showing Neptune coming in strong, allowing you to use your imagination in a brandnew way!

SAM BURNETT

CONGRATS ON YOUR ESHER HARE & BONE ANNIVERSARY, ARE YOU AND THE TEAM DOING ANYTHING SPECIAL TO CELEBRATE?

Thanks a million, it’s amazing! I can’t quite believe we are already approaching 4. We will of course be eating cake and popping a few bottles of bubbly with our clients and as a celebratory thank you we are offering a ‘Birthday Blow Dry’ and indulgent Dual Sense Treatment, including a complimentary glass of Prosecco for £39.

WHAT SETS YOUR SALONS APART?

All our stylists are hand-picked by me, trained to the highest technical standards, we are active in the hairdressing industry teaching and mentoring, we work in the fashion industry where our stylist can be found backstage at London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks working on shows like Burberry, Chanel, Dior creating the trends, translating them, then bringing them back in to the salon. Above all else we truly care about our clients and their hair journey.

WHAT ARE HIGHLIGHTS AND PITFALLS OF OWNING YOUR OWN SALONS?

Being your own boss and being your own boss, ha-ha. In all seriousness I would say the main pitfalls are keeping everyone happy, I mean it’s a people business all the way from the Salon teams to our client. We strive to always deliver the highest standards even with the past few year’s challenges, that we have over come by being proactive,

responsive, and pulling together as a team. I love all the work I do externally to Hare & Bone, but being in the salon is my ‘happy place’, where I can connect with my clients and team, so having a Hare home and family is the highlight.

YOU ARE ALWAYS UP TO DATE ON CURRENT TRENDS, WHERE DO YOU GET MOST OF YOUR INSPIRATION?

Street fashion, working backstage at Fashion Weeks, exhibitions and working with people’s individuality.

WHAT ARE THE TRENDS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS AUTUMN/ WINTER?

Lux coppers, classic blonde highlights with a golden hue, face framing panels of colour, embrace those curls or add some volume with a perm, more polished hair with stunning blow outs like we saw at Chanel.

HAVING STYLED THE BIGGEST AND BEST MUSIC STARS, MODELS AND PRESENTERS, WHO WAS THE BEST TO WORK WITH AND WHY?

Awww this is tricky questions as each of them have their own special memories and stand out moments but if I had to choose one, I’d have to say Charli XCX as we worked together for about 7 years, travelling all over the world shooting music videos, red carpets, festivals, fashion weeks. I had a lot of firsts with Charli and definitely got into mischief and had fun.

YOU ALSO STYLE FOR FASHION WEEKS, HOW HAVE THE SHOWS GONE THIS YEAR?

The shows have been amazing and I’m actually answering these questions whilst at Paris Fashion Week in between shows. Actually, come to think of it we did have last minute reshuffle to squeeze in the Burberry show in London the day we travelling to Paris as it was originally scheduled for the day of our late Queen’s funeral.

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING

SURREYROCKS | ISSUE 14154

THAT’S HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE STYLING?

This is funny now, but it wasn’t at the time. I was styling the hair for a music artist who was performing on a yacht at Cannes Film Festival, I extended their hair with a long ponytail, I was told it would be static performance so I only lightly pinned it in; to my absolute horror they ramped up the performance, vigorously swinging her hair around and around and around, all I could envisage was the 20 inch ponytail flying off and landing in the Mediterranean sea. Thankfully it just about held on, and I lived to work another day.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHT?

Opening Hare & Bone, the first time I was lead stylist at a Fashion Show, winning ‘British Newcomer’ at The British Hairdressing Awards and being invited to Buckingham Palace for services to The Royal Family.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE 3 THINGS TO A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT WOULD THEY BE? My dog Reggie, Music, Chocolate.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUESTS?

BEST ADVICE EVER GIVEN?

Be yourself as everyone else is already taken. Thanks Oscar Wilde.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE GROWING UP?

I have known since the age of three that I wanted to be a hairstylist.

WE HEAR YOU GREW UP IN SURREY, WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

I grew up in Sutton, it’s a London Borough with a Surrey post code so I

can swing either way, ha-ha. It’s such a fantastic location to grow up in with easy access to the countryside, the coast and central London. Growing up I was drawn to the city and always knew that’s where I wanted to be, as I have matured, I find myself being pulled more towards the country life, so the Esher salon makes a lot of sense.

ARE THERE PLANS TO EXPAND BEYOND YOUR SURREY AND LONDON SALONS IN THE FUTURE?

I have always said we will grow Hare & Bone organically so if and when the time is right there could well be additional salons and I could see Hare & Bone adding new strings to its bow so watch this space.

You can read Sam Burnett’s Hair Column on page XX of the October Issue and be sure to pay a visit to the Esher Salon where Surrey Rocks Readers can benefit from an introductory offer of 20% off your first three visits and complimentary tea and coffee. See www.hareandbone. co.uk or call 01737 924800.
